In situ gas-loading sample holders for two-dimensionally arranged detectors in time-of-flight neutron total scattering experiments have been developed to investigate atomic arrangements during deuterium absorption using time and real-space resolution. A single-crystal sapphire container was developed that allows conditions of 473 K and 10 MPa hydrogen gas pressure. High-resolution transient measurements detected deuterium absorption by palladium that proceeded within a few seconds. A double-layered container with thick- and thin-walled vanadium allowed conditions of 423 K and 10 MPa hydrogen gas pressure. The deuterium occupation sites of a lanthanum–nickel–aluminium alloy are discussed in detail on the basis of real-space high-resolution data obtained from in situ neutron scattering measurements and reverse Monte Carlo structural modeling.

高圧・高温下における液体金属の密度はその圧縮特性や弾性特性を理解するうえで基本的で重要な情報を与える。本研究では外熱式ダイヤモンドアンビルセルを用いたX線吸収測定によって液体ガリウムの密度測定を10GPa、533Kまでの圧力・温度範囲で行った。液体ガリウムの弾性特性は3種の状態方程式で密度のデータをフィッティングすることで得られた。得られた体積弾性率は用いた状態方程式に因らずほとんど同じであった。以前の結果に比べ、本研究で得られた液体ガリウムの圧縮曲線からは、より高い圧力でわずかに硬くなる傾向が示された。

合金から成る水素化物の相分離状態は、複数の水素化/脱水素化サイクルを作用させても維持される可能性がある。この効果を非混和性のMg-Mnシステムにおいて金属水素化物を不安定化するために用いた。ここで、MgxMn1-x薄膜では、MgドメインとMnドメインがナノスケールで分離している。Mnが多い組成では、MgH2からの水素脱離圧力が所定の温度で上昇し、熱力学的に不安定化したことを示した。大きな熱力学的不安定化により、MgH2は室温でも水素を可逆的に吸蔵、放出することが可能となる。MgH2の不安定化に非混和性元素を使用する方法は効果的であり、高性能度、低コストの水素貯蔵および供給システムの開発の可能性に道を拓く。

本研究は、合成されたケイ酸カルシウム水和物（C-S-H）の局所的な原子配列、構造、相変態、および機械的特性に対する加熱の影響を解明することを目的としている。合成されたC-S-H（Ca / Si = 0.8）の原子配列の変化と、脱水（105〜200℃）、分解（300〜600℃）、および再結晶（700〜1000℃）の3つの独立した段階で起こる結晶化は、粉末X線回折、29Si核磁気共鳴分光法、および熱重量分析によって調べた。さらに、局所的な原子結合環境の変形と3つの段階での機械的特性の変化を、その場での全X線散乱に基づく二体分布関数分析によって評価した。その結果、加熱前のC-S-Hペーストは、水分子が中間層で潤滑剤として作用するため、初期荷重段階の逆格子空間よりも実空間での弾性率が低いことが明らかになった。脱水段階では、外部荷重に対するひずみは、自由な水分の蒸発によって引き起こされる追加の細孔の形成のために不規則な変形を示した。分解段階では、メインの面間隔（d≈3.0Å）の構造変形は、マイクロクラックが伝播する前の実空間の構造変形と類似している。再結晶過程では、C-S-Hから結晶性β-ウォラストナイトへの熱相変態により、弾性率は48GPaに増加した。これらの結果は、外部荷重下で高温にさらされた後のC-S-Hペーストのミクロおよびナノ構造の変形挙動の直接的な実験的証拠を与える。

正二十面体のAu-Al-Yb準結晶とその1/1近似結晶において室温でおよそ20GPaまでの準静水圧下における放射光X線回折測定を実施した。得られたそれぞれの圧縮曲線は類似しており、圧力に対して単調に減少する。これは高圧力下でこれらが安定であることを示している。得られた体積弾性率は準結晶で105.1(8)GPa、近似結晶で108.1(7)GPaであり、これらの値は基本的に各構成元素の体積弾性率の組成加重平均によって説明される。

原子番号1番の水素は多くの実験プローブに感度がなく，水素を観測するためには水素の原子核であるプロトンを直接観測する必要がある．イオンと中性子はプロトンを直接検出できるため、水素関係材料の研究に用いられている．本稿では，イオンビームによる核反応法と中性子およびX線回折を利用した水素関係先端材料研究について解説し，最近の成果を紹介する．

自発的な電気分極の起源となるBi3+とBサイトの原子変位を示すペロフスカイト酸化物BiInO3とBiZn1/2Ti1/2O3の固溶体の研究を実施した。一定の体積減少での負の熱膨張を伴う極性を持つ直方晶から非極性の直方晶への転移をBiIn1-xZnx/2Tix/2O3のx ≤ 0.3の領域で観測した。AサイトのBi3+からBサイトのイオンへの電気分極の相対的なシフトは転移温度を低下させ、広い温度領域で温度ヒステリシスが抑制された負熱膨張の発現を可能にした。加えて、0.4 ≤ x ≤ 0.8の領域で見つかった強弾性を示す新しいLiNbO3型相は、非常に高いスイッチングひずみを特徴とし、ドメイン壁の移動度を高める可能性を示した。

本稿では放射光を利用した水素化物研究の例として、新規水素化物の高温高圧合成研究について紹介する。

This study investigated the non-equilibrium hydrogen absorption reaction paths of the AB5-type LaNi2Co3 alloy using time-resolved in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction. Diffraction data were collected every second for reactions under two hydrogen loading pressures. Hydrogen absorption with a hydrogen loading of 1 MPa rapidly transformed α phase to a transient phase (estimated to be LaNi2Co3H3.1–3.6, named γ∗); this has not previously been observed under equilibrium processes. The γ∗ phase continuously transformed into the γ phase (LaNi2Co3H4.5–5.0), and the β phase (LaNi2Co3H~3.6) was not formed. When 0.18 MPa of hydrogen was loaded, initially, the γ∗ phase appeared, followed by the formation of the β phase, finally transforming into the γ phase. These results indicate that a higher loading pressure promotes the formation of the γ∗ phase and assists its continuous transformation into the γ phase by enhancing the dissolution of hydrogen into the α and γ∗ phases.

Neutron powder diffraction profiles were collected for iron deuteride (FeDx) while the temperature decreased from 1023 to 300 K for a pressure range of 4–6 gigapascal (GPa). The ε′ deuteride with a double hexagonal close-packed (dhcp) structure, which coexisted with other stable or metastable deutrides at each temperature and pressure condition, formed solid solutions with a composition of FeD0.68(1) at 673 K and 6.1 GPa and FeD0.74(1) at 603 K and 4.8 GPa. Upon stepwise cooling to 300 K, the D-content x increased to a stoichiometric value of 1.0 to form monodeuteride FeD1.0. In the dhcp FeD1.0 at 300 K and 4.2 GPa, dissolved D atoms fully occupied the octahedral interstitial sites, slightly displaced from the octahedral centers in the dhcp metal lattice, and the dhcp sequence of close-packed Fe planes contained hcp-stacking faults at 12%. Magnetic moments with 2.11 ± 0.06 μB/Fe-atom aligned ferromagnetically in parallel on the Fe planes.

ペロブスカイト型化合物PbVO3は、高圧下で-10.6%という非常に大きな体積減少を伴う、極性正方晶(P4mm)から非極性立方晶(Pm-3m)への構造相転移を示す、不熱膨張材料である。 本研究ではPb2+やBi3+の持つ6s2孤立電子対の量を調節することで大きなc/aを保ちつつ温度誘起相転移を狙い、巨大な体積変化を伴う負熱膨張物質の設計を図った。 このように設計されたPb0.8Bi0.1Sr0.1VO3において、低温相と高温相の体積差が高圧下での体積収縮に匹敵する-11.1%となる負熱膨張を実現した。 さらに10%以上の巨大な体積差を持つ2相の共存状態の観察を、透過電子顕微鏡観察とBragg コヒーレントX 線回折イメージングにより初めて成功した。, 日本物理学会2022年年次大会

アルミニウムと遷移金属からな水素化物の探索を進めている。3d遷移金属では既に複数の水素化物の合成に成功しており、類似の構造を持つものもあることが分かっている。一方、4dや5dの遷移金属とアルミニウムの組み合わせからなる水素化物は見つかっていなかったが、最近それらが複数発見された。Al-遷移金属水素化物合成研究についてこれまで得られている成果をまとめて紹介する。, Material Research Meeting 2021

Among the various functionalities of hydrides, their use in hydrogen storage has been the most intensively studied because hydrides can store hydrogen compactly and safely. Thus, hydrides are key materials for the hydrogen economy. Here, the hydrogen storage material Al3FeH3.9 has been synthesized from cost-effective earth-abundant metals, Fe and Al. Hydrides consisting of Al and transition metals with low hydrogen affinities are rare because such alloys are unstable. However, it is expected that appropriate mixing of the chemical states of hydrogen atoms would allow synthesis of Al-Fe hydrides. The experimentally determined crystal structure of Al3FeD3.9 suggests realization of the mixing of the chemical state of hydrogen. Al3FeH3.9 is more thermodynamically stable than AlH3, and it is likely that the mixing of the chemical state of hydrogen atoms is the source of increased stability. The results of this study confirm that by controlling the chemical states of hydrogen, it is possible to tune the thermodynamic stability of hydrides and thus realize novel functional hydrides.

Phase segregation in hydride-forming alloys may persist under the action of multiple hydrogenation/dehydrogenation cycles. We use this effect to destabilize metal hydrides in the immiscible Mg-Mn system. Here, in the MgxMn1-x thin films, the Mg and Mn domains are chemically segregated at the nanoscale. In Mn-rich compositions, the desorption pressure of hydrogen from MgH2 is elevated at a given temperature, indicating a thermodynamic destabilization. The increase in the desorption pressure of hydrogen reaches ∼2.5 orders in magnitude for x = 0.30 at moderate temperatures. Such large thermodynamic destabilization allows the MgH2 to reversibly absorb and desorb hydrogen even at room temperature. Our strategy to use immiscible elements for destabilization of MgH2 is effective and opens up the possibility for the development of advanced and low-cost hydrogen storage and supply systems.

The hydrogen desorption and absorption reactions of the complex metal hydride NaAlH4 are disproportionation processes, and the kinetics can be improved by adding a few mol% of Ti compounds, although the catalytic mechanism, including the location and state of Ti, remains unknown. In this study, we aimed to reveal the generating mechanism of catalytic Al–Ti alloy in NaAlH4 with TiCl3 using quantum multiprobe techniques such as neutron diffraction (ND), synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD), anomalous X-ray scattering (AXS), and X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS). Rietveld refinements of the ND and XRD, profiles before the first desorption of NaAlD(H)4–0.02TiCl3 showed that Al in NaAlD(H)4 was partially substituted by Ti. On the other hand, Ti was not present in NaAlH4, and Al–Ti nanoparticles were detected in the XRD profile after the first re-absorption. This was consistent with the AXS and XAFS results. It is suggested that the substitution promotes the formation of a highly dispersed nanosized Al–Ti alloy during the first desorption process and that the effectiveness of TiCl3 as an additive can be attributed to the dispersion of Ti.

試料よりも十分に大きいコヒーレンス長のX線を微結晶に照射すると、微結晶の形状や不均質構造を反映したBragg回折パターンが得られる。フーリエ反復アルゴリズムを用いて位相を回復させると、微結晶試料の外形、サイズ、歪を実空間にて可視化することができる。この手法をBraggコヒーレントX線回折イメージング(Bragg-CDI)という。Bragg-CDIは結晶性微粒子のドメイン境界、粒界、転位を非破壊で観察できることから、様々な機能性物質、材料への応用が期待され、世界的に研究開発が行われている。日本では、唯一量研播磨がSPring-8にて研究開発を勧めているところである。本発表では、研究開発の紹介を兼ねて、最新の進捗について報告する。, ハイドロジェノミクス第8回若手育成スクール

SPring-8のコヒーレントX線とBL22XUビームラインのBraggコヒーレント回折イメージング (Bragg-CDI) 装置を用いて、Pd微結晶とBaTiO3微結晶の外形、サイズ、内部歪の可視化を行なった。真空槽の導入やShrink-wrapの適用により、観測可能粒子サイズをこれまでの100~300 nmから40~500 nmへと大幅に拡張することに成功した。この成果を国際結晶学連合International Union of CrystallographyのカンファレンスであるTwenty-Fifth Congress and General Assembly of the International Union of Crystallographyにて発表するものである。, Twenty-Fifth Congress and General Assembly of the International Union of Crystallography

Negative thermal expansion (NTE) induced by simultaneous mechanisms, that is, charge transfer and polar-nonpolar transitions, was observed for the first time in BiNi1-xFexO3 (0.25 ≤ x ≤ 0.5). The low-temperature phase was found to have a polar structure (space group of R3c) with a Bi3+0.5(1+x)Bi5+0.5(1-x)Ni2+1-xFe3+xO3 charge distribution and short-range ordering of Bi3+ and Bi5+. The volume reduction upon heating that was induced by charge transfer between Bi5+ and Ni2+ decreased with increasing x because of the reduction in the amount of Ni2+. Simultaneous polar-nonpolar transition also contributed to NTE, and a composition-independent enhanced volume reduction of ∼2% was observed.

The Nb19Ti40Ni41 alloy has a lamellar structure with bcc-Nb and B2-TiNi phases. It is known that a granule Nb phase forms in the TiNi matrix after thermal annealing and that the hydrogen permeability of unrolled annealed alloy is higher than that of rolled annealed alloy, even though the two alloys have granule Nb phase. Although the “cube-on-cube” relationship of crystal orientation for these phases has been observed in unrolled annealed alloy, no specific crystal orientation relationship has been seen in rolled annealed alloy. This indicates that the crystal orientation between the two phases strongly affects hydrogen permeability in Nb-TiNi two-phase alloys.

We report on the formation of a new icosahedral quasicrystal (iQC) in the Au-Sn-Yb alloy system. This iQC has a primitive icosahedral lattice with a lattice constant aico of 0.5447(7) nm and a composition that was determined to be Au60.0Sn26.7Yb13.3. X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurement of the near Yb L3 edge demonstrates that the Yb valence in the iQC is an intermediate valence between divalent (4f14) and trivalent (4f13) at ambient pressure and was determined to be 2.18+. The results are compared to those for a corresponding 2/1 cubic approximant crystal. The formation of this new iQC is discussed in terms of the atomic size factor (δ) and the valence electron-to-atom ratio (e/a).

A technique for density measurement under high pressure and high temperature was developed using the X-ray absorption imaging method combined with an externally heated diamond anvil cell. The densities of solid and liquid In were measured in the pressure and temperature ranges of 3.2–18.6 GPa and 294–719 K. The densities obtained through the X-ray absorption imaging method were in good agreement (less than 2.0% difference) with those obtained through X-ray diffraction. Based on the measured density, the isothermal bulk modulus of solid In is determined as 48.0 ± 1.1−40.9 ± 0.8 GPa at 500 K, assuming K ′ = 4 to 6. The compression curve of liquid In approaches that of solid In at higher pressures and does not cross over the solid compression curve in the measurement range. The present technique enables us to determine the densities of both solids and liquids precisely in a wide pressure and temperature range.
