Abstract This study investigates the impact of surface temperature anomalies on the health of residents within the River Niger Basin Development Authority (RIBDA) enclave, which covers Nigeria, Niger, and Mali in West Africa, with a focus on the regional implications for public health. Historical climate data from 1985 to 2014, sourced from the Climatic Research Unit Time‐Series, Version 3.22 (CRU TS 3.22), was analyzed to comprehend past climate patterns and establish a baseline for future comparisons. Predictions for future climate conditions (2015–2044) were derived by adjusting the CRU data using temperature projections from the Community Climate System Model 4 under the Representative Concentration Pathway 8.5 scenario. To assess the potential impacts of these climate changes, particularly during the boreal summer season of July‐August‐September (JAS), the study utilized the Hydrology, Entomology, and Malaria Transmission Simulator (HYDREMATS). Findings indicate that surface temperature can intricately influence disease transmission, with varied effects on parameters such as Ro, EIR, prevalence, and immunity index. Observations revealed fluctuations in temperature anomalies over the years, with negative anomalies in 1991–1995 and positive anomalies in subsequent years. Although precise predictions for 2016–2044 are challenging based solely on data trends from 1985 to 2015, continued temperature rises could potentially lead to increased disease prevalence and decreased immunity index. Moreover, the analysis identified a notable temporal increase in mean annual temperature and mean annual maximum temperature from 1999 to 2020, suggesting a faster warming trend in maximum temperatures compared to minimum temperatures. This increase in temperature variability may alter the onset and cessation dates of the rainy season, affecting water availability, accessibility, and consumption, consequently fostering conditions conducive to health‐related diseases. By incorporating predicted long‐term temperature changes due to greenhouse gas emissions while maintaining current inter‐annual climate patterns, this approach allows researchers to anticipate potential future health implications in the studied regions.

Risk communication of Covid‑19 pandemic in Nigeria appeared to be urban‑centered with the dominant use of social media, print communication and other controlled media. In such times of public health emergencies, non‑literate population could be vulnerable as a result of their limited understanding of the nature of such health risk. Therefore, the study seeks to investigate the extent to which Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) communicated the risk of Covid‑19 disease to non‑literate population in its public health campaign during the pandemic in South‑West Nigeria. The study adopts risk communication theory which advances the approach communication should take during public health emergencies. Using descriptive cross‑sectional mixed methods research design, a sample of 420 respondents were purposively selected from 6 towns in the rural areas of Lagos, Oyo and Osun states to examine the level of awareness on Covid‑19 pandemic among non‑literates. In addition, NCDC risk communication on Covid‑19 for non‑literate population were analyzed from 3 Jingles in Yoruba language as well as 9 flyers designed for Covid‑19 disease from NCDC websites. Results showed that NCDC awareness creation on Covid‑19 disease for non‑literates in Southwest achieved significant success as a result of the medium used in creating awareness. Specifically, radio was highly rated among majority of the respondents (60.4%) followed by health workers (19.8%) as channels that created understandable message on Covid‑19 safety protocols.Further findings on Jingles content revealed that all Covid‑19 safety protocols were communicated in Yoruba language for Southwest populace. However, NCDC fall short in communi‑ cating Covid‑19 risk effectively for non‑literates in Southwest as jingles only buttressed the Covid‑19 safety protocols and symptoms as well as the need to comply, without educating the masses on the dreadful nature of the disease and its dynamics. Though flyers designed by the NCDC communicated risk to an extent, nevertheless, graphics and symbols on Covid‑19 disease were complimented by words in English language only, which could be difficult for non‑literates to decipher. Based on the findings, the study recommends that public health agencies need to educate non‑literate population about the nature of a disease more than creating awareness about the outbreak of a disease, and such education should be strategic, context‑specific, and evidence‑based.

The effects of ethanolic extract of Lepidium meyenii on some biochemical parameters were investigated. Forty male Wistar rats were grouped into five groups of eight animals each. Group 1 served as the control and received distilled water throughout the period of administration while groups 2, 3, 4 and 5 received 25, 50, 75 and 100 mg/kg body weight of ethanolic extract of L. meyenii respectively for seven and fourteen days. After seven days of administration, four animals from each of the groups were sacrificed and the rest were sacrificed after fourteen days, and biochemical alterations were monitored. The effects after the seven-day administration revealed that there was no significant (p > 0.05) difference in organ-body weight percentage, liver functional indices, kidney functional indices and the activity of some cytosolic and membrane bound enzymes studied but following the fourteen-day administration, significant difference (p < 0.05) were observed with increase in organ-body weight percentage of selected organs, increase in serum activity of the enzymes: ALT, AST, ALP; and aberrant variation in the kidney functional indices studied at the 50, 75 and 100 mg/kg body weight showing selective toxicity of the extract. Inconclusive results were obtained in the analysis of the seminal parameters for both the seven- and fourteen-day administration while similar effects on hematological parameters were observed for both the seven- and fourteen-day administration. This study showed that the extract may be hepatotoxic and nephrotoxic when administered beyond seven days in male Wistar rats especially at 100 mg/kg body weight.

We performed a diagnostic study of geomagnetic storm-induced disturbances that are coupled to the mid-latitude D region by quantifying the propagation characteristics of very low-frequency (VLF) radio signals from transmitters located in Cumbria, UK (call sign GQD), and Rhauderfehn, Germany (DHO), and received in southern France (A118). We characterised the diurnal VLF amplitudes from two propagation paths into five metrics, namely the mean amplitude before sunrise (MBSR), the midday amplitude peak (MDP), the mean amplitude after sunset (MASS), the sunrise terminator (SRT) and the sunset terminator (SST). We analysed and monitored trends in the variation of signal metrics for up to 20 storms to relate the deviations in the signal amplitudes that were attributable to the storms. Five storms and their effects on the signals were examined in further detail. Our results indicate that relative to pre-storm levels the storm day MDP exhibited characteristic decreases in about 80 % (67 %) of the events for the DHO-A118 (GQD-A118) propagation path. The MBSR showed decreases of about 60 % (77 %), whereas the MASS decreased by 67 % (58 %). Conversely, the SRT and SST showed amplitude decreases of 33 % (25 %) and 47 % (42 %), respectively. Of the two propagation paths, the amplitude decreases for the DHO-A118 propagation path signal were greater, as previously noted by Nwankwo et al. (2016). To better understand the state of the ionosphere over the signal propagation paths and how it might have affected the VLF amplitudes, we further analysed the virtual heights (h'E, h'F1 and h'F2) and critical frequencies (foE, foF1 and foF2) from ionosondes located near the transmitters. The results of this analysis showed significant increases and fluctuations in both the F-region critical frequencies and virtual heights during the geomagnetic storms. The largest increases in the virtual heights occurred near the DHO transmitter in Rhauderfehn (Germany), suggesting a strong storm response over the region which might account for the larger MDP decrease along the DHO-A118 propagation path.

In Niger, the potential for malaria spread was found to be low to moderate. Although mosquito bite rates were low, the population had low immunity, making them more susceptible to diseases like malaria and dengue. High temperatures can increase the prevalence of mosquito‐borne diseases, leading to higher illness and death rates, especially among vulnerable groups like children and pregnant women. Unusual temperature patterns in Niger affected disease‐related factors like transmission rates and immunity, though this may not hold for all diseases. In Nigeria, no clear link between rising temperatures and malaria transmission was found, but rainfall played a bigger role. More rain creates favorable conditions for mosquitoes, which can increase malaria spread. Mali's situation was complex, with no clear trends over time. The relationship between temperature and disease transmission involved multiple factors, like rainfall and humidity. Increased mosquito activity during higher temperatures could lead to more malaria cases, posing a public health challenge. Student matriculation number is a unique identification and authentication number assigned to every student upon first enrollment in an institution. This unique matriculation number assists research and educational institutions to monitor, track, organize and transfer student records efficiently, effectively and reliably. This research paper is centered on the automation of student matriculation number generation in the Nigerian Defence Academy Postgraduate School, Kaduna. An algorithm was developed to automatically generate the matriculation number. The Unified Modelling Language (UML) was used to design the system and it was implemented using Java.

There is a known fact that the public depends largely on the media for information. However, such information might not have been perceived rightly as sent by the media. Hence, the objective of this study is to examine the extent to which information on the coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic containment policy flows from the government to the public through the pages of newspapers. Aside from examining how these policies were framed, it seeks to also find out if Nigerians perceived the coverage by newspapers as relevant for them to comply with them. Adopting a descriptive methodological approach which systematically differs from most previous studies because substantial studies on the subject matter use qualitative methods. Findings reveal that Newspapers' framing of COVID-19 stories does not correlate with public adherence to the government's containment policy and the volume of newspaper coverage of COVID-19 stories does not correlate with public perception of the importance of the government containment policy on the disease. The study concluded that even though advancement in technology has given rise to the use of other media such as social media, the efficacy/potency and relevance of the newspaper cannot be brushed aside despite this advancement. It is, however, recommended that further studies should be conducted to examine the challenges faced by press through Key Informant Interview (KII) in the carrying coverage on the COVID-19 pandemic in other to strike balance. In this work, we simulated the atmospheric drag effect on two model SmallSats (small satellites) in low Earth orbit (LEO) with different ballistic coefficients during 1-month intervals of solar–geomagnetic quiet and perturbed conditions. The goal of this effort was to quantify how solar–geomagnetic activity influences atmospheric drag and perturbs satellite orbits, with particular emphasis on the Bastille Day event. Atmospheric drag compromises satellite operations due to increased ephemeris errors, attitude positional uncertainties and premature satellite re-entry. During a 1-month interval of generally quiescent solar–geomagnetic activity (July 2006), the decay in altitude (h) was a modest 0.53 km (0.66 km) for the satellite with the smaller (larger) ballistic coefficient of 2.2×10-3 m2 kg−1 (3.03×10-3 m2 kg−1). The associated orbital decay rates (ODRs) during this quiet interval ranged from 13 to 23 m per day (from 16 to 29 m per day). For the disturbed interval of July 2000 the significantly increased altitude loss and range of ODRs were 2.77 km (3.09 km) and 65 to 120 m per day (78 to 142 m per day), respectively. Within the two periods, more detailed analyses over 12 d intervals of extremely quiet and disturbed conditions revealed respective orbital decays of 0.16 km (0.20 km) and 1.14 km (1.27 km) for the satellite with the smaller (larger) ballistic coefficient. In essence, the model results show that there was a 6- to 7-fold increase in the deleterious impacts of satellite drag between the quiet and disturbed periods. We also estimated the enhanced atmospheric drag effect on the satellites' parameters caused by the July 2000 Bastille Day event (in contrast to the interval of geomagnetically quiet conditions). The additional percentage increase, due to the Bastille Day event, to the monthly mean values of h and ODR are 34.69 % and 50.13 % for Sat-A and 36.45 % and 68.95 % for Sat-B. These simulations confirmed (i) the dependence of atmospheric drag force on a satellite's ballistic coefficient, and (ii) that increased solar–geomagnetic activity substantially raises the degrading effect of satellite drag. In addition, the results indicate that the impact of short-duration geomagnetic transients (such as the Bastille Day storm) can have a further deleterious effect on normal satellite operations. Thus, this work increases the visibility and contributes to the scientific knowledge surrounding the Bastille Day event and also motivates the introduction of new indices used to describe and estimate the atmospheric drag effect when comparing regimes of varying solar–geomagnetic activity. We suggest that a model of satellite drag, when combined with a high-fidelity atmospheric specification as was done here, can lead to improved satellite ephemeris estimates.

ABSTRACT – This study investigated how Nigerian newspapers contributed to sensitizing and sustaining public attention on the issue of the schoolgirls that were abducted by the Boko Haram group in Chibok, northeastern Nigeria. The study analyzed the direction/slant, frequency, and prominence of news stories, feature articles, editorials, special reports, interpretative articles, and news analysis on the abduction as published in three major Nigerian newspapers. Using the content analytical technique, the study found that there was no day in the period under investigation that the issue of the abducted Chibok girls did not get attention in the press. The study also found that the press discharged its corporate social responsibility by setting and sustaining public consciousness on the injustice and inhumanity of the abduction. Furthermore, a connection was established between the unrelenting crusade mounted by non-governmental organizations, especially the #BringBackOurGirls movement, for the release of the abducted girls, sustained public interest provided by the Press, and the eventual government action that culminated in the release of 164 out of the 276 girls initially abducted. This study, therefore, recommends continued publicity by the media in its role as a social crusader to ensure that the remaining Chibok and other abductees are rescued from their Boko Haram abductors. RESUMO – Este estudo investigou como os jornais nigerianos contribuíram para sensibilizar e manter a atenção do público sobre a questão das estudantes que foram sequestradas pelo grupo Boko Haram em Chibok, no nordeste da Nigéria. O estudo analisou o direcionamento/ponto de vista, a frequência e proeminência das notícias, artigos de destaque, editoriais, reportagens especiais, artigos interpretativos e análises de notícias sobre o sequestro nas publicações dos três principais jornais nigerianos. Usando técnica analítica de conteúdo, o estudo identificou que, no período investigado, não houve um dia em que a pauta do sequestro não tenha recebido atenção da imprensa. O estudo descobriu também que a imprensa cumpriu sua responsabilidade social corporativa ao estabelecer e manter a consciência pública sobre a injustiça e desumanidade do sequestro. Além disso, uma conexão foi estabelecida entre a cruzada incessante montada por organizações não governamentais, especialmente o movimento #BringBackOurGirls, pela libertação das meninas, e sustentou o interesse público proporcionado pela imprensa e a eventual ação governamental que culminou com a libertação de 164 das 276 garotas inicialmente sequestradas. Portanto, este estudo recomenda a continuidade da visibilidade proporcionada pela mídia no seu papel de cruzada social para assegurar que Chiboks e outros raptados sejam resgatados dos seus sequestradores do Boko Haram. RESUMEN – En este estudio se investiga cómo los periódicos nigerianos contribuyeron a sensibilizar y mantener la atención pública sobre la cuestión de las niñas secuestradas por el grupo Boko Haram en Chibok, al noreste de Nigeria. El estudio analizó la dirección/orientación, frecuencia y prominencia de las noticias, artículos de fondo, editoriales, informes especiales, artículos interpretativos y análisis periodísticos sobre el secuestro, publicados en tres importantes periódicos nigerianos. Mediante el uso de la técnica del análisis de contenido, el estudio llegó a la conclusión de que no había ningún día en el período investigado en que el asunto de las niñas Chibok secuestradas no recibiera atención en la prensa. También se encontró que la prensa cumplió con su responsabilidad social corporativa al establecer y mantener la conciencia pública sobre la injusticia y la falta de humanidad del secuestro. Además, se estableció una conexión entre la implacable cruzada montada por organizaciones no gubernamentales, especialmente el movimiento #BringBackOurGirls, por la liberación de las niñas secuestradas, el interés público sostenido proporcionado por la prensa, y la eventual acción gubernamental que culminó en la liberación de 164 de las 276 niñas inicialmente secuestradas. Por lo tanto, en este estudio se recomienda que los medios de comunicación continúen otorgando publicidad, en su rol público de luchadores sociales, para garantizar que los restantes Chibok y otros secuestrados sean rescatados de sus secuestradores de Boko Haram.

Social media has become an indispensable and dominant means of communication and dissemination of information worldwide. This paper focuses on the use of Facebook by political supporters and electorates to canvass for support for their preferred presidential candidates in the 2019 general elections and the underlying hate speech that emanated therefrom. In this context, this paper seeks to critically evaluate how political supporters and electorates used the instrumentality of Facebook to share hate messages during the 2019 presidential election and its impact on Nigeria’s political space. The results of this paper indicate widespread dissemination of hate comments by political supporters and electorates in the furtherance of their support for their preferred presidential candidates. The paper advocates responsible use of Facebook in electioneering and the imperative of regulation to guard against the circulation of hate electoral comments that could heat up the political arena and trigger electoral violence.

Background: The indication for Caesarean delivery is one of the most important information required in the antenatal care and delivery mode for women with previous Caesarean section(s). Objective: To assess the level of agreement/disparity between mothers’ report and the actual medical indication for Caesarean delivery and to explore factors associated with it. Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out among 248 women who were delivered by Caesarean section. A comparison was done between the patient's report of the indication for the Caesarean section and the physician's record and the level of similarity was recorded. Results: More than half (126; 50.7%) of the respondents reported indications that were classified as complete similarity [Group A] while Groups B to E had 54 (21.8%), 21 (8.5%), 26 (10.5%) and 21 (8.5%) responses respectively. Of the group with “non-similar” responses, foetal indication accounted for 36.1% of them. Parity was the only predictor of “similarity”. Compared to para 0, para 1-4 were more likely to report “similarity” in the indications for the Caesarean section (AOR = 3.370; 95% CI = 1.277-8.888). Conclusion: While the past obstetric history is an important aspect of the evaluation of the pregnant woman, it is important to attempt greater verification of facts at history taking for the indications for previous Caesarean section, especially when it has to do with foetal health as the indication, and in the nulliparae.

A large number of insulation/dielectric failures in power systems are related to thermally-induced dielectrical breakdown, also known as ‘thermal breakdown’, at higher operating temperatures. In this work, the thermal breakdown behavior of typical silicone formulations, used as dielectrics in stretchable electronic devices, is analyzed at practically relevant operating temperatures ranging from 20°C to 80°C. An effective way of delaying the thermal breakdown of insulating materials is to blend micro- or nano-sized inorganic particles with high thermal conductivity, to dissipate better any losses generated during energy transduction. Therefore, two types of commercial silicone formulations, blended with two types of rutile hydrophobic, high-dielectric TiO2 fillers, are investigated in relation to their dielectric properties, namely, relative permittivity, the dissipation factor, and electrical breakdown strength. The breakdown strengths of these silicone composites are subsequently evaluated using Weibull analysis, which indicates a negative correlation between temperature and shape parameter for all compositions, thus illustrating that the homogeneity of the samples decreases in line with temperature, but the breakdown strengths nevertheless increase initially due to the trapping effect from the high-permittivity fillers.

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is a recalcitrant metabolite produced by fungi species, and due to its intoxications in animals and humans, it has been classified as a Group 1 carcinogen in humans. Preserving food products with Sorghum bicolor sheath can minimise the contamination of agricultural products and avert ill health occasioned by exposure to AFB1. The current study investigated the ameliorating effect of Sorghum bicolor sheath hydrophobic extract (SBE-HP) enriched in Apigenin (API) on the hepatorenal tissues of rats exposed to AFB1. The SBE-HP was characterised using TLC and LC-MS and was found to be enriched in Apigenin and its methylated analogues. The study used adult male rats divided into four experimental cohorts co-treated with AFB1 (50 µg/kg) and SBE-HP (5 and 10 mg/kg) for 28 days. Biochemical, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) and histological staining were used to examine biomarkers of hepatorenal function, oxidative status, inflammation and apoptosis, and hepatorenal tissue histo-architectural alterations. Data were analysed using GraphPad Prism 8.3.0, an independent t-test, and a one-way analysis of variance. Co-treatment with SBE-HP ameliorated an upsurge in the biomarkers of hepatorenal functionality in the sera of rats, reduced the alterations in redox balance, resolved inflammation, inhibited apoptosis, and preserved the histological features of the liver and kidney of rats exposed to AFB1. SBE-HP-containing API is an excellent antioxidant regiment. It can amply prevent the induction of oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis in the hepatorenal system of rats. Therefore, supplementing animal feeds and human foods with SBE-HP enriched in Apigenin may reduce the burden of AFB1 intoxication in developing countries with a shortage of effective antifungal agents.

This is a case of primary diffuse large B-cell lymphoma involving the uterine cervix which presented with irregular vaginal bleeding. The diagnosis was confirmed following multiple cervical biopsies. Treatment with a combination of immunotherapy, chemotherapy (rituximab, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine and prednisolone (R-CHOP)) and radiotherapy produced a good response. Trypanosomiasis is a significant productivity-limiting livestock disease in sub-Saharan Africa, contributing to poverty and food insecurity. In this paper, we estimate the potential economic gains from adopting Waterbuck Repellent Blend (WRB). The WRB is a new technology that pushes trypanosomiasis-transmitting tsetse fly away from animals, improving animals' health and increasing meat and milk productivity. We estimate the benefits of WRB on the production of meat and milk using the economic surplus approach. We obtained data from an expert elicitation survey, secondary and experimental sources. Our findings show that the adoption of WRB in 5 to 50% of the animal population would generate an economic surplus of US$ 78-869 million per annum for African 18 countries. The estimated benefit-cost ratio (9:1) further justifies an investment in WRB. The technology's potential benefits are likely to be underestimated since our estimates did not include the indirect benefits of the technology adoption, such as the increase in the quantity and quality of animals' draught power services and human and environmental health effects. These benefits suggest that investing in WRB can contribute to nutrition security and sustainable development goals.

The survey data was obtained from a study that investigated factors responsible for the patronage of the traders on the pedestrian bridges along Ikorodu road, Lagos state, Nigeria. Survey research was adopted for this investigation while data were primarily sourced. The sample frame adopted for this study was the average total number of people using the pedestrian bridges per day along Ikorodu road was estimated as 240,380, while the sample size was 384, based on Cochran׳s sample size formula. The convenience, non-probability sampling technique was used for the survey. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (frequency tables) and inferential statistics techniques (factor analysis for data reduction and categorization, communalities of variables and KMO) while Likert scale was used as a means of measurement. The datasets can be considered in the commerce and environmental policies of Lagos State and Nigeria with a view to recommending policies that will encourage easy movement of people and the effective uses of the transport facilities. This survey data examined the factors influencing commuters’ perception of environmental quality in the selected intra-urban motor parks of Ibeju Lekki, Ifako Ijaiye and Ikeja local government areas, Lagos State, Nigeria. A survey of 376 commuters was carried out. The purposive sampling technique was used for the survey while the sampling procedure evolved from the identification of the study area to the administration of questionnaire with commuters in the motor parks. Data were analyzed using descriptive (likert scale outputs) and inferential statistical techniques (factor analysis for data reduction and categorization). The datasets can be considered in the transport and environmental policies of Lagos State and Nigeria with a view to engendering a conducive environment in the intra-urban motor parks of Lagos State, Nigeria. Rising incidences of piracy in the entertainment/creative industry in Nigeria are increasing concerns about the sustainability of the industry and the livelihood of content creators. The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 1 (SDG 1) aims to end poverty at all levels and in all places by the year 2030, but this goal faces a challenge if personal and corporate investments of moviemakers are lost to piracy. Studies have shown that profit-seeking pirates are not the only ones who do damage to the industry, but end-users also share unauthorised digital contents. The purpose of this research is to investigate the connection between gender and willingness of the audience, who in this case are undergraduate students of a government-owned university in Lagos, to see piracy curbed. Multistage sampling was used to cluster the population into faculties and departments. A sample of 199 was selected purposively based on the respondents’ knowledge of digital piracy, and a 20-item questionnaire was used for data gathering. Using t-test to analyse the data, the result shows that there was no significant difference between the views of female and male respondents. Cohen’s d analysis also indicates that there is a negligible effect size. While respondents participated in digital file-sharing, they did not consider their stoppage of the habit relevant to curbing piracy in Nigeria. Hence, the study recommends proper enlightenment of end-users to understand their significant role in digital piracy.
