Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), often referred to as "forever chemicals", are a class of man-made, extremely stable chemicals, which are widely used in industrial and commercial applications. Exposure to some PFAS is now known to be detrimental to human health. By virtue of PFAS long residence times, they are widely detected in the environment, including remote locations such as the Arctics, where the origin of the PFAS is poorly understood. It has been suggested that PFAS may be transported through contaminated waters, leading to accumulation in coastal areas, where they can be aerosolised via sea spray, thereby extending their geographical distribution far beyond their original source regions. The aim of this work is to investigate, for the first time, whether "forever chemicals" could be transported to areas considered to be pristine, far from coastal sites. This study was performed at the Amazonian Tall Tower Observatory (ATTO), a unique remote site situated in the middle of the Amazon rainforest, where a restricted PFAS, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), was observed with concentrations reaching up to 2 pg/m 3 . A clear trend of increasing concentration with sampling height was observed and air masses from the south over Manaus had the highest concentrations. Atmospheric lifetime estimations, removal mechanisms supported by measurements at two heights (320 and 42 m above the rainforest), and concentration spikes indicated a long-range transport of PFOA to pristine Amazon rainforest. Potential sources, including industrial activities in urban areas, were explored, and historical fire management practices considered. This research presents the first measurements of PFAS in the atmosphere of Amazon rainforest. Remarkably, even in this remote natural environment, appreciable levels of PFAS can be detected. Background: The association between exposure to air pollutants and cardiovascular disease (CVD) trajectory in individuals with circadian syndrome remains inconclusive., Methods: The individual exposure levels of air pollutants, including particulate matter (PM) with aerodynamic diameter ≤ 2.5 μm (PM 2.5 ), PM with aerodynamic diameter ≤ 10 μm (PM 10 ), PM 2.5 absorbance , PM with aerodynamic diameter between 2.5 μm and 10 μm, nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ), nitrogen oxides (NO x ), and air pollution score (overall air pollutants exposure), were estimated for 48,850 participants with circadian syndrome from the UK Biobank. Multistate regression models were employed to estimate associations between exposure to air pollutants and trajectories from circadian syndrome to CVD/CVD subtypes (including coronary heart disease [CHD], atrial fibrillation [AF], heart failure [HF], and stroke) and death. Mediation roles of CVD/CVD subtypes in the associations between air pollutants and death were evaluated., Results: After a mean follow-up time over 12 years, 12,570 cases of CVD occurred, including 8192 CHD, 1693 AF, 1085 HF, and 1600 stroke cases. In multistate model, per-interquartile range increment in PM 2.5 (hazard ratio: 1.08; 95 % confidence interval: 1.06, 1.10), PM 10 (1.04; 1.01, 1.06), PM 2.5 absorbance (1.04; 1.02, 1.06), NO 2 (1.07; 1.03, 1.11), NO x (1.08; 1.04, 1.12), or air pollution score (1.06; 1.03, 1.08) was associated with trajectory from circadian syndrome to CVD. Significant associations between the above-mentioned air pollutants and trajectories from circadian syndrome and CVD to death were observed. CVD, particularly CHD, significantly mediated the associations of PM 2.5 , NO 2 , NO x , and air pollution score with death., Conclusions: Long-term exposure to air pollutants during circadian syndrome was associated with subsequent CVD and death. CHD emerged as the most prominent CVD subtype in CVD progression driven by exposure to air pollutants during circadian syndrome. Drained agricultural peat soils pollute both the atmosphere and watercourses. Biochar has been observed to decrease greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and nutrient loading in mineral soils. We studied effects of three biochar types with two application rates (10 and 30 Mg ha -1 ) on GHG fluxes as well as N and P leaching on peat soil. Peat monoliths were drilled from a long-term cultivated field and were watered either slightly (five dry periods) or heavily (four rainfall periods) during an 11-month laboratory experiment with intact peat columns. The incubation of bare peat profiles enhanced peat decomposition leading to high CO 2 (up to 1300 mg CO 2  m -2  h -1 ) and N 2 O emissions (even 10,000-50,000 μg N 2 O m -2  h -1 ) and NO 3 - -N leaching (even 300-700 mg L -1 ) in all treatments. In the beginning of the experiment, the lower application rate of pine bark biochars increased N 2 O emission compared to control, but otherwise none of the biochars or their application rates significantly affected gas fluxes or nutrient leaching. These results indicate that moderate softwood biochar application does not help to mitigate the environmental problems of agricultural peat soils. Tree bark has been proven as an effective passive air sampler, particularly where access to active sampling methods is limited. In this study, 60 target liquid crystal monomers (LCMs; comprising 10 cyanobiphenyl and analogs (CBAs), 13 biphenyl and analogs (BAs), and 37 fluorinated biphenyl and analogs (FBAs)) were analyzed in 34 tree barks collected from the vicinity of a liquid crystal display (LCD) manufacturer situated in the Pearl River Delta, South China. The concentrations of LCMs in tree barks ranged from 1400 to 16000 ng/g lipid weight, with an average of 5900 ng/g lipid weight. Generally, bark levels of BAs exponentially decreased within 5 km of the LCD manufacturer. The profiles of LCMs in tree barks are similar to previously reported patterns in gaseous phase, suggesting bark's efficacy as a sampler for gaseous LCMs. The inclusion of different congeners in existing studies on the environmental occurrence of LCMs has hindered the horizontal comparisons. Therefore, this study established a list of priority LCMs based on environmental monitoring data and the publicly accessible production data. Inhalable airborne microplastics (MPs) presented in indoor and outdoor environments, can deeply penetrate the lungs, potentially triggering inflammation and respiratory illnesses. The present study aims to evaluate human health risks from respirable particulate matter (PM)-bound trace metals and MPs in indoor (SW- subway and IRH- indoor residential houses) and outdoor (OD) environments. This research provides an initial approach to human respiratory tract (HRT) mass depositions of PM10-bound total MPs and nine specific MP types to predict potential human health threats from inhalation exposure. Results indicate that PM-bound trace metals and MPs were around 4 times higher in SW microenvironments compared to OD locations. In IRH, cancer risk (CR) levels were estimated 9 and 4 times higher for PM10 and PM2.5, respectively. Additionally, MP particle depositions per gram of lung cell weight were highest in IRH (23.77), followed by OD and SW. Whereas, lifetime alveoli depositions of MPs were estimated at 13.73 MP/g, which exceeds previously reported respiratory disease fatality cases by 10 to 5 times. Prolonged exposure duration at IRH emerged as a key factor contributing to increased CR and MP lung deposition levels. The World Health Organization categorizes air pollution as the presence of one or more contaminants in the atmosphere such as smoke, dust, and particulate matter like microplastics, which are considered a priority pollutant. However, only a few studies have been developed on atmospheric pollution, and knowledge about MPs in the atmosphere is still limited. Spider webs have been tested and used as a passive sampling approach to study anthropogenic pollution. Despite this, studies on microplastic contamination using spiderwebs as samplers are scarce. Thus, this study uses spider webs as passive indicators to investigate air quality regarding microplastic contamination in an urbanized area. Therefore, 30 sampling points were selected, and webs of Nephilingis cruentata were collected. The spider webs were dipped in KOH 10 %. After digestion, the solution was washed and sieved through a 90 µm geological sieve. The remaining material was transferred to a Petri dish with filter paper, quantified, and identified by type and color. The chemical composition of the polymers was determined using Raman spectroscopy. 3138 microplastics were identified (2973 filaments and 165 fragments). The most frequent colors were blue and black. Particulate matter pollution (PMP) has been identified as a substantial contributor to cancer. However, accurately delineating the evolving trends in cancer burden attributable to PMP remains an ongoing challenge. The 1990-2019 disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) were used for cancers attributable to PMP from the Global Burden and Disease Study (GBD) 2019, including ambient particulate matter pollution (APMP) and household air pollution from solid fuels (HAP). The joinpoint regression and the Bayesian age-period-cohort (BAPC) model were employed to assess the corresponding trends over the periods 1990-2019 and 2020-2050, respectively. Additionally, statistical models such as frontier analysis and health inequality analysis were also utilized. During the 30-year period, cancer DALYs attributable to APMP increased globally, while those attributable to HAP and PMP decreased. Cancer DALYs attributable to APMP were positively correlated with socio-demographic index (SDI), while those attributable to PMP and HAP were negatively correlated with SDI. Frontier analysis identified the countries and regions requiring urgent action to mitigate PMP-attributable cancer. Finally, it was anticipated that the cancer burden attributable to APMP would increase during 2020 to 2050, while the burden attributable to HAP and PMP would decrease. The Sudokwon landfill (SL) in the Seoul metropolitan area, South Korea, is among the world's largest landfills, striving to curtail landfill gas (LFG) emissions and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Since 2005, the SL Management Corporation (SLC) has measured LFG emissions (i.e., methane (CH 4 ) and carbon dioxide (CO 2 )) using a dynamic flux chamber proposed by the US EPA. However, uncertainty prevails in validating the reduction of LFG emissions due to the limited spatiotemporal data coverage. In 2020, an eddy covariance (EC) system was installed to enhance measurements, revealing highly fluctuating LFG emissions driven by waste layer LFG production, LFG collection, and atmospheric pressure changes. During the study period, the annual CH 4 emission increased slightly from 465.0 ± 4.2 to 485.5 ± 6.4 g C m -2 , while that of CO 2 decreased by 2/3 (from 408.7 ± 16.5 to 270.6 ± 18.8 g C m -2 ), primarily due to the doubled CO 2 uptake by the vegetated topsoil. Climate impacts of landfill gas emissions were investigated for 20- and 100-year time horizons to identify the effects of atmospheric lifetimes of short- and long-lived drivers. Direct and indirect climate impacts were determined for methane and 79 trace species. The impacts were quantified using global warming potential, GWP (direct and indirect); atmospheric degradation (direct); tropospheric ozone forming potential (indirect); secondary aerosol forming potential (indirect) and stratospheric ozone depleting potential (indirect). Effects of cover characteristics, landfill operational conditions, and season on emissions were assessed. Analysis was conducted at five operating municipal solid waste landfills in California, which collectively contained 13% of the waste in place in the state. Climate impacts were determined to be primarily due to direct emissions (99.5 to 115%) with indirect emissions contributing -15 to 0.5%. Methane emissions were 35 to 99% of the total emissions and the remainder mainly greenhouse gases (hydro)chlorofluorocarbons (up to 42% of total emissions) and nitrous oxide. Cover types affected emissions, where the highest emissions were generally from intermediate covers with the largest relative landfill surface areas. Landfill-specific direct emissions varied between 683 and 103,411 and between 381 and 37,925 Mg CO 2 -eq./yr for 20- and 100-yr time horizons, respectively. Total emissions (direct + indirect) were 680 to 103,600 (20-yr) and were 374 to 38,108 (100-yr) Mg CO 2 -eq./yr. Analysis time horizon significantly affected emissions. The 20-yr direct and total emissions were consistently higher than the 100-yr emissions by up to 2.5 times. The 31st FISU Summer World University Games (SWUG) was held in Chengdu, southwestern China, from July 22 to August 8, 2023. A series of control measures were carried out to ensure good air quality during the SWUG, providing an opportunity to investigate the atmospheric behaviors of light-absorbing aerosols under such a substantial disturbance caused by the control measures. To assess the impacts of emission controls on primary pollutants, a field campaign was conducted at a rural site in Chengdu to investigate the characterization of equivalent black carbon (eBC). The changes of eBC concentrations before, during, and after the SWUG were characterized. The sources of eBC were resolved, and the impacts of atmospheric processes on the absorption capacity were also investigated. During the SWUG, the eBC concentration decreased by 12.1 % and 25.3 % compared with those before and after the SWUG. A fossil fuel combustion (eBC ff ) and a biomass burning (eBC bb ) originated eBC were resolved using the aethalometer model. Both eBC ff and eBC bb decreased during the SWUG, indicating the effectiveness of control measures. After the SWUG, the influence of biomass burning emissions became more and more significant, and the contribution of brown carbon (BrC) to light absorption at 370-660 nm increased by 52, 19, 7, 6, and 17 % compared to those during the SWUG. As the biomass burning emitted aerosols aged, the absorption Ångström exponent and b abs (BrC 370nm ) decreased gradually, which was mainly due to the photobleaching of the chromophores during the daytime. eBC ff was mainly affected by strong wind, while high eBC bb concentration was mainly attributed to the gradual accumulation of biomass-burning emissions near the observation site. Seasonal variations in black carbon (BC) pollution characteristics during haze episodes in Benxi city, Liaoning province, were analyzed using year-long measurements of BC, carbon monoxide (CO), and PM 2.5. Haze frequencies were recorded to be 0.07, 0.03 and 0.14 in spring, autumn, and winter respectively. Solid fuel contributions increased notably by 7%-8% during haze events compared to clean periods in all seasons. Transitioning from clean to haze periods led to ΔBC/ΔCO increases of 16% in spring and autumn, and 6.8% in winter, while BC/PM 2.5 ratios decreased by approximately 33%, 50%, and 24% for spring, autumn, and winter respectively, likely indicating enhanced residential and industrial contributions. These further led to an increase in BC absorption capacities by factors of around 2.2 in spring and autumn, and up to 2.6 in winter during haze periods. Despite liquid fuel sources dominating BC emissions, certain haze episodes (frequency <10%) showed solid fuel contributions of up to 65%, highlighting BC pollution complexity in the region during haze. Backward trajectories analysis revealed local air masses from Liaoning province arrived consistently with the most occurrence of haze events across all seasons, while long-range air masses from Mongolian regions, though with less frequent occurrence during haze periods, significantly elevated BC loadings from solid fuel sources, particularly in spring and autumn due to biomass burning. Despite higher BC wet scavenging rates (WSR) in long-range air masses (0.072 ng m -3  ppbv -1 mm -1 ) compared to local air masses (0.039 ng m -3  ppbv -1 mm -1 ), significant BC transport persisted due to limited precipitation along transport pathways, especially during haze periods. Synthetic turf has been a mainstay of field sports and local communities for decades, and in that time, has faced both community and government pressure to ensure its safety and fitness for purpose. Considerable research and regulations have been applied to synthetic turf with regards to its safety, construction, potential toxicity, sports impact, as well as environmental considerations. However, very little attention has been paid to reports of odorous impacts from synthetic turf fields. This is problematic as odours are both a source of most complaints by communities towards other industries, as well as the fact that synthetic turf has a unique placement within communities themselves. It is wholly possible that the concerns surrounding synthetic turf are being modulated by the odours that the fields themselves produce through previously identified psychological mechanisms. As a result, ensuring good standards for synthetic turf with regards to odorous emissions should be benchmarked for community acceptability. This review investigates prior research into synthetic turf with regards to identified volatile organic compounds emitted, as well as proposing the means by which community stakeholders engage with synthetic turf, as well as how they should be consulted. From here, this review provides trajectories for future research within this space, and how regulatory bodies should address potential issues. Increased systemic oxidative stress, implicated in adverse pregnancy outcomes for both mothers and fetuses, has been associated with gestational exposure to air pollutants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ), and nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ). However, it is unclear whether exposure to pollutants at levels below the current air quality standards can increase oxidative stress in pregnant women. In a cohort of 305 pregnant persons residing in western New York, we examined the association between exposure to PM 2.5 , NO 2 , and PAHs (measured as urinary 1-hydroxypyrene) and urinary biomarkers of oxidative stress (malondialdehyde [MDA] and 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine [8-OHdG]) measured in each trimester. After controlling for gestational stage, maternal age, lifestyles, and socioeconomic factors, each interquartile range (IQR) increase in 1-hydroxypyrene concentration (65.8 pg/ml) was associated with a 7.73% (95%CI: 3.18%,12.3%) higher in MDA levels throughout the pregnancy and in the first and second trimester. An IQR increase in PM 2.5 concentration (3.20 μg/m 3 ) was associated with increased MDA levels in the first trimester (8.19%, 95%CI: 0.28%,16.1%), but not the 2nd (-7.99%, 95% CI: 13.8%, -2.23%) or 3rd trimester (-2.81%, 95% CI: 10.0%, 4.38%). The average cumulative PM 2.5 exposures in the 3-7 days before urine collection were associated with increased 8-OHdG levels during the second trimester, with the largest difference (22.6%; 95% CI: 3.46%, 41.7%) observed in relation to a one IQR increase in PM 2.5 concentration in the previous 7 days. In contrast, neither oxidative stress biomarker was associated with NO 2 exposure. Observed in pregnant women exposed to low-level air pollution, these findings expanded previously reported associations between systemic oxidative stress and high-level PM 2.5 and PAH concentrations. Solid fuel combustion emitted abundant pollutants, especially polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) which had significant minus impact on human health in rural China. PAHs in PM 2.5 emitted from different fuels combustion and hydroxylated metabolites of PAHs (OH-PAHs) in urine samples of different fuel users were detected in this study. The indoor PAHs were higher than that in outdoors for solid fuel use households, and the concentration of PAHs in the indoor of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) use household was not much lower than solid fuel use households. Biogas-use household produced the lowest PAHs, which significantly reduced 64-82% compared with those emitted by solid fuel combustion. The different combustion conditions influenced the gaseous PAHs in indoors between two sampling sites. The gas/particle partition indicated that PAHs tended to occur in the particle phase with increased molecular weight, and the absorption was the main mechanism. The relative higher contribution of high molecular weight PAHs (HMW-PAHs) in solid fuel use households than in clean fuel use households, induced more health risks of PAHs. The concentration of Σ 10 OH-PAHs in the urine samples for elders of different fuel-use households displayed the trend of coal (83.27 ng/mL) > wood (79.32 ng/mL) > LPG (51.61 ng/mL) > biogas (28.96 ng/mL), and OH-NaPs was the predominant metabolites, which accounted for more than 90% of the total concentration. The carcinogenic risk of PAHs based on internal exposure was greater than or close to 10 -4 , with serious carcinogenic risks. This was different with the incremental lifetime cancer risk based on the atmospheric concentrations. Trees act as natural filters that mitigate roadside air pollution. However, the filtration impact of different tree arrangements on traffic pollutants with different particle diameters has rarely been analysed in real street canyon environments. To quantify how roadside tree arrangements impact pedestrian exposure to particle number concentrations (PNCs) of different diameters (0.25-32 μm), in situ field measurements were carried out in a boulevard-type street canyon in the city of Xi'an, China. This study analysed the experimental data of PNCs collected along segments of a pedestrian lane under four typical tree arrangements: open space without trees, a sparse-spaced tree arrangement, a medium-spaced tree arrangement, and a dense-spaced tree arrangement in a street canyon. Our results reveal that the effect of tree arrangement on PNCs depended on the particle diameter. In general, trees can significantly reduce coarse PNC (particles with diameters >2.5 μm) but not the fine PNC. Quantitative analysis showed that a medium-spaced tree arrangement, in which tree crowns are adjacent to each other but do not overlap, is the most capable of reducing PNC, followed by a sparse-spaced tree arrangement, while a the dense-spaced tree arrangement has the least impact. The attenuation effect of trees on the PNCs increased with increasing particle diameter. Moreover, the presence of trees altered the local microclimate, which also affected how exposure to PNCs changed. Passive methane oxidation biosystems (PMOBs) are developed as an innovative and cost-effective solution to reduce methane (CH 4 ) emissions from municipal solid waste landfills. A PMOB consists of a methane oxidation layer (MOL) and an underlying gas distribution layer (GDL). The length of unrestricted gas migration (LUGM) has been recently proposed as the design criterion for PMOBs where the LUGM is calculated as the horizontal length along the MOL-GDL interface with the volumetric gas content (θ a ) exceeding the threshold volumetric gas content (θ a,occ ). This paper examined water and gas migration within three PMOBs with different MOL-GDL interfaces subject to precipitation and evaporation using verified numerical models. The results show that the use of a single-phase flow model underestimates the LUGM values of the PMOB for heavy precipitation events, and a two-phase flow model should be used to calculate both the LUGM and the total gas mass flow rate into the MOL when designing PMOBs. Both zig-zag and trapezoidal MOL-GDL interfaces can redistribute the gas mass flow rate at the MOL-GDL interface, while the trapezoidal MOL-GDL interface slightly outperforms the zig-zag MOL-GDL interface for enhancing the total gas mass flow rate into the MOL when comparing with the planar MOL-GDL interface. The construction of cascade reservoirs can interfere with the natural hydrologic cycles of basins, causing negative environmental effects such as altering the emission patterns of the Nitrous oxide (N 2 O), a potent greenhouse gas. To elucidate the impact of cascade reservoirs construction on river N 2 O emissions, we utilized the thin boundary model and the incubation experiments to estimate the N 2 O fluxes at the air-water interface and at the water-sediment interface of cascade reservoirs on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, respectively. Additionally, we explored the influence of various factors, with particular emphasis on damming, on N 2 O emissions and production. Moreover, we identified the main pathways of N 2 O production and proposed management strategies to mitigate N 2 O emissions from cascade reservoirs. The findings revealed that N 2 O fluxes at the air-water interface and the water-sediment interface were 4.73 ± 1.32 μmol m -2 · d -1 and 15.56 ± 1.98 μmol m -2 · d -1 , respectively. Influenced by temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), resource substances (active nitrogen substrates and dissolved organic carbon (DOC)) and reservoir properties (scale, hydraulic retention time (HRT), reservoir age, etc.), the N 2 O concentration and flux exhibited notable spatial heterogeneity, gradually increasing downstream. Temperature has a significant direct impact on N 2 O flux, as well as indirect effects through DO and resource chemicals. Furthermore, the correlation between dissolved oxygen utilization rate (AOU) and net N 2 O flux (ΔN 2 O) indicated that N 2 O emissions at the water-air interface were primarily attributable to nitrification, whereas those at the water-sediment interface were predominantly driven by denitrification. The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) is one of the key areas with PM 2.5 air pollution in China. Driven by the PM 2.5 target accessibility of the Interim Target-1 (IT-1) by World Health Organization (WHO) and China's carbon neutrality, this study explored and quantified the contribution of climate change and anthropogenic emission to future PM 2.5 in the region. The experiments considered future climate change scenarios RCP8.5, RCP4.5, and RCP2.6 with the baseline (Base) and reduced emission (EIT1) inventories in 2030, and RCP4.5 climate scenario with 3 emission inventories in 2050, the additional strong control emission scenario called Best-Health-Effect (BHE). Under various climate scenarios, the future air quality research modelling system projected annual PM 2.5 concentrations nearing 35 μg/m 3 in 2030. However, considering only the effect of emission reduction, the annual PM 2.5 concentrations under EIT1 emission scenario is about 35% less than under Base scenario in different key years. The future PM 2.5 concentrations are highly related to anthropogenic emission from human activities, while climate change by 2030 or 2050 has little impact on future air quality over the BTH region. Background: Animal and human studies indicate that exposure to air pollution and natural environments might modulate the gut microbiota, but epidemiological evidence is very scarce., Objectives: To assess the potential impact of pre- and postnatal exposure to air pollution and green spaces on infant gut microbiota assembly and trajectories during the first year of life., Methods: MAMI ("MAternal MIcrobes") birth cohort (Valencia, Spain, N = 162) was used to study the impact of environmental exposure (acute and chronic) on infant gut microbiota during the first year of life (amplicon-based 16S rRNA sequencing). At 7 days and at 1, 6 and 12 months, residential pre- and postnatal exposure to air pollutants (NO 2 , black carbon -BC-, PM 2.5 and O 3 ) and green spaces indicators (NDVI and area of green spaces at 300, 500 and 1000 m buffers) were obtained. For the association between exposures and alpha diversity indicators linear regression models (cross-sectional analyses) and mixed models, including individual as a random effect (longitudinal analyses), were applied. For the differential taxon analysis, the ANCOM-BC package with a log count transformation and multiple-testing corrections were used., Results: Acute exposure in the first week of life and chronic postnatal exposure to NO 2 were associated with a reduction in microbial alpha diversity, while the effects of green space exposure were not evident. Acute and chronic (prenatal or postnatal) exposure to NO 2 resulted in increased abundance of Haemophilus, Akkermansia, Alistipes, Eggerthella, and Tyzerella populations, while increasing green space exposure associated with increased Negativicoccus, Senegalimassilia and Anaerococcus and decreased Tyzzerella and Lachnoclostridium populations., Discussion: We observed a decrease in the diversity of the gut microbiota and signs of alteration in its composition among infants exposed to higher levels of NO 2 . Understanding and managing the health effects of Nitrogen Dioxide (NO 2 ) requires high resolution spatiotemporal exposure maps. Here, we developed a multi-stage multi-resolution ensemble model that predicts daily NO 2 concentration across continental France from 2005 to 2022. Innovations of this work include the computation of daily predictions at a 200 m resolution in large urban areas and the use of a spatio-temporal blocking procedure to avoid data leakage and ensure fair performance estimation. Predictions were obtained after three cascading stages of modeling: (1) predicting NO 2 total column density from Ozone Monitoring Instrument satellite; (2) predicting daily NO 2 concentrations at a 1 km spatial resolution using a large set of potential predictors such as predictions obtained from stage 1, land-cover and road traffic data; and (3) predicting residuals from stage 2 models at a 200 m resolution in large urban areas. The latter two stages used a generalized additive model to ensemble predictions of three decision-tree algorithms (random forest, extreme gradient boosting and categorical boosting). Cross-validated performances of our ensemble models were overall very good, with a ten-fold cross-validated R 2 for the 1 km model of 0.83, and of 0.69 for the 200 m model. All three basis learners participated in the ensemble predictions to various degrees depending on time and space. In sum, our multi-stage approach was able to predict daily NO 2 concentrations with a relatively low error. Ensembling the predictions maximizes the chance of obtaining accurate values if one basis learner fails in a specific area or at a particular time, by relying on the other learners. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study aiming to predict NO 2 concentrations in France with such a high spatiotemporal resolution, large spatial extent, and long temporal coverage. Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and haze pollution are often thought to have the same origin, the burning of fossil fuels. However, their relationship is not always synergistic and may even exhibit mutual constraints. Carbon-biased technological progress has emerged as a promising approach for simultaneously achieving three goals - to reduce CO2 emissions, alleviate the haze pressure, and keep economic growth. This study empirically investigates the impact and mechanisms of carbon-biased technological progress on carbon haze collaborative governance using data from 286 Chinese cities during 2006-2021. The results indicate that: (1) Carbon biased technological progress positively influences carbon haze collaborative governance. (2) This progress achieves coordination by enhancing element allocation efficiency, carbon efficiency, and responding to public environmental demands. (3) The facilitating role of carbon biased technological progress to carbon haze collaborative governance will work better if external conditions are met. Moreover, the effectiveness of carbon-biased technological progress in promoting coordination is contingent upon high levels of marketization, government intervention, environmental regulation, and technical advancements. Climate change mitigation requires simultaneous reduction of carbon emissions and air pollution. This study examines the synergy between pollution reduction and carbon reduction, identifying key variables and strategies to achieve this goal. Using a Geographical Detector model and a Coupling Degree of Coordination model, 108 cities in the Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB) are investigated. Results show that while controlling PM2.5 has been more successful than managing carbon emissions in the YREB, synergy between pollution reduction and carbon emissions increased by an average of 7.2% from 2006 to 2019. Spatial analysis reveals higher synergy in upstream areas, indicating significant spatial diversity. The impact of pollution and emission reduction synergies is influenced by societal and environmental variables, including industry structure, technological innovation, energy structure, human capital quality, and economic basis. Synergy is amplified when natural limits align with high-quality development drivers such as technical innovation and the digital economy. In recent years, there has been a significant increase in surface ozone (O 3 ) concentrations in the troposphere. Ozone pollution has significant adverse effects on ecosystems, human health, and climate change, particularly on crop growth and yield. This study utilized the observational hourly O 3 data, cumulative O 3 concentration over 40 ppb per h (AOT40), and the mean daytime 7-h O 3 concentration (M7) to analyze the spatiotemporal distributions of relative yield losses (RYLs) and evaluate the yield reduction and economic losses of rice in Sichuan province from 2015 to 2020. The results indicated that the average O 3 concentration during the growing rice season ranged from 55.4 to 69.3 μg/m 3 , with the highest O 3 concentration observed in 2017, and the AOT40 ranged from 4.5 to 8.7 ppm h from 2015 to 2020. At the county level, the O 3 concentration, AOT40, and the relative yield loss (RYL) of rice based on AOT40 exhibited clear spatiotemporal differences in Sichuan. The RYLs of AOT40 were 4.9-9.2% from 2015 to 2020. According to AOT40 and M7 metrics, the yield loss and economic losses attributed to O 3 pollution amounted to 78.75-150.36 (9.74-21.54) ten thousand tons, and 2079.08-4149.89 (257.25-594.45) million Yuan, respectively. Rice yield and economic losses were relatively large in the Chengdu Plain, southern Sichuan, and northeast Sichuan. These findings will contribute to a deeper understanding of the detrimental effects of elevated surface O 3 concentrations on rice crops. Long-term particulate matter with aerodynamic diameters ≤2.5 μm (PM 2.5 ) exposure has been associated with the occurrence of acute coronary syndrome (ACS). However, the impact of PM 2.5 exposure and its components on the severity of angina pectoris and disease-related health status in patients hospitalized for ACS is understudied. To assess the association between long-term exposure to PM 2.5 components and the angina pectoris severity in ACS patients, as well as the modification effects of genetic factors and disease history in north China. During 2017-2019, 6729 ACS patients were collected in Shandong Province and Beijing, with their angina pectoris severity evaluated using Seattle Angina Questionnaire (SAQ). The 0-3 years' average concentrations of PM 2.5 and its five major components were assigned to each patient's residential address. Linear mixed-effects model, weighted quantile regression, and quantile g-computation were used to estimate the effects of both single and joint associations between PM 2.5 components and SAQ scores. The interactive effect was estimated by polygenic risk scores and disease history. For each interquartile range increase in PM 2.5 , the overall SAQ score changed by -3.71% (95%CI: -4.54% to -2.88%), with score of angina stability more affected than angina frequency and other dimensions of angina pectoris severity. Sulfate and ammonium were major contributors to the effect of PM 2.5 exposure. Significant modification effect was only observed for disease history, especially for the dimension of physical limitation. Among a series of pre-existing diseases, patients with a family history of coronary artery disease, previous percutaneous coronary intervention or coronary artery bypass grafting, and stroke were more susceptible to PM 2.5 exposure than others. Greater exposure to PM 2.5 is associated with more serious angina pectoris and worse disease-related health status in ACS patients. Background: Fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) has been implicated in various health concerns. However, a comprehensive understanding of the specific PM 2.5 components affecting depression remains limited., Methods: This study conducted a Cox proportional-hazards model to assess the effect of PM 2.5 components on the incidence of depression based on the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Participants with 10-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CESD-10) score of 10 or higher were classified as exhibiting depression., Results: Our findings demonstrated a significant positive correlation between long-term exposure to black carbon (BC), sulfate (SO 4 2- ), and organic matter (OM) components of PM 2.5 and the prevalence of depression. Per 1 Interquartile Range (IQR) increment in 3-year average concentrations of BC, OM, and SO 4 2- were associated with the hazard ratio (HR) of 1.54 (95 % confidence intervals (CI): 1.44, 1.64), 1.24 (95%CI: 1.16, 1.34) and 1.25 (95%CI: 1.16, 1.35). Notably, females, younger individuals, those with lower educational levels, urban residents, individuals who were single, widowed, or divorced, and those living in multi-story houses exhibited heightened vulnerability to the adverse effects of PM 2.5 components on depression., Limitations: Firstly, pollutant data is confined to subjects' fixed addresses, overlooking travel and international residence history. Due to a lack of long-term observations in China, reports on historical ozone concentration are severely limited. In this study, by combining observation, reanalysis and model simulation data, XGBoost machine learning algorithm is used to correct the surface ozone concentration from CMIP6 climate model, and the long-term and large-scale surface ozone concentration of China during 1950-2014 is obtained. The long-term evolutions and trends of ozone and meteorological effects on interannual ozone variations are further analyzed. The results reveal that CMIP6 historical simulations have a large underestimation in ozone concentrations and their trends. The XGB-derived ozone are closer to observations, with R 2 value of 0.66 and 0.74 for daily and monthly retrievals, respectively. Both the concentrations and exceedances of ozone in most parts of China have shown increasing trends from 1950 to 2014. The daily mean ozone concentration without climate change effects is estimated to be 117 ppb in the year 1950 averaged over China. It indicates that the increase in anthropogenic emissions of China has a significant contribution to ozone enhancement between 1950 and 2014. The higher ozone growth rates of XGB retrievals than those from the model indicate a regional surface ozone penalty due to the warming climate. The relatively significant increment in ozone are estimated in the Central and Western China. Seasonally, the ozone enhancement is largest in spring, indicating a shift in seasonal variation of ozone. By 2020, China has implemented the use of 10% ethanol-blended-gasoline (E10), which is expected to notably impact vehicular volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emissions. The adoption of E10 reduced certain emissions but raised concerns with about more reactive oxygenated volatile organic compounds (OVOCs). This study aimed to evaluate the impact of E10 on the total VOCs emissions from both exhaust and evaporative emissions by conducting tests on the CHINA V (or CHINA VI) light-duty gasoline vehicles (LDGVs) using 0% ethanol blended gasoline (E0) and E10. E10 reduces VOCs emissions in the exhaust, and reduces the ozone and secondary organic aerosol generation potential of VOCs in the exhaust, as evidenced by the lower emission factors (EFs), ozone formation potentials (OFPs) and secondary organic aerosol formation potential (SOAFPs) in the CHINA V LDGVs. Evaporative emissions showed differences in emitted VOCs, with lower EFs, OFPs and SOAFPs for the CHINA V LDGVs fueled with E10. The CHINA VI LDGVs also exhibited reduced EFs, OFPs and SOAFPs. Extreme climatic conditions, like heat waves or cold spells, associated to high concentrations of air pollutants are responsible for a broad range of effects on human health. Consequently, in the recent years, the question on how urban and peri-urban forests may improve both air quality and surface climate conditions at city-scale is receiving growing attention by scientists and policymakers, with previous studies demonstrating how nature-based solutions (NBS) may contribute to reduce the risk of population to be exposed to high pollutant levels and heat stress, preventing, thus, premature mortality. In this study we present a new modeling framework designed to simulate air quality and meteorological conditions from regional to urban scale, allowing thus to assess the impacts of both air pollution and heat stress on human health at urban level. To assess the model reliability, we evaluated the model's performances in reproducing several relevant meteorological, chemical, and biological variables. Results show how our modeling system can reliably reproduce the main meteorological, chemical, and biological variables over our study areas, thus this tool can be used to estimate the impact of air pollution and heat stress on human health. This review is aimed at researchers in air pollution control seeking to understand the latest advancements in volatile organic compound (VOC) removal. Implementing of plasma-catalysis technology for the removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) led to a significant boost in terms of degradation yield and mineralization rate with low by-product formation. The plasma-catalysis combination can be used in two distinct ways: (I) the catalyst is positioned downstream of the plasma discharge, known as the "post plasma catalysis configuration" (PPC), and (II) the catalyst is located in the plasma zone and exposed directly to the discharge, called "in plasma catalysis configuration" (IPC). Coupling these two technologies, especially for VOCs elimination has attracted the interest of many researchers in recent years. The term "synergy" is widely reported in their works and associated with the positive effect of the plasma catalysis combination. This review paper investigates the state of the art of newly published papers about catalysis, photocatalysis, non-thermal plasma, and their combination for VOC removal application. The focus is on understanding different synergy sources operating mutually between plasma and catalysis discussed and classified into two main parts: the effect of the plasma discharge on the catalyst and the effect of the catalyst on plasma discharge. Indoor air quality is a critical factor influencing athletic performance, particularly in professional sports settings, yet its impact remains underexplored. This study utilizes a panel dataset from 2516 Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) matches across 20 cities in China between 2014 and 2019. We integrate daily air pollution metrics with player efficiency ratings (PER) to investigate the effects of air quality on individual performance. We find that a 10% increase in the air quality index (AQI) corresponds to a 1.4223 decrease in PER, indicating a strong negative effect of poor air quality on player productivity. Different pollutants have varying effects, with some exacerbating the decline in both overall performance and precision in tasks. Notably, older players and international players exhibit greater resilience to air pollution. Against the backdrop of global climate change and the "dual carbon" target, cities have a significant responsibility to achieve carbon reduction targets. As a crucial urban agglomeration in northern China, effectively balancing economic growth with CO 2 emission reduction to achieve high-quality economic development remains a significant challenge that the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region should address both presently and in the future. The objective of this study is to utilize nighttime lighting data and energy consumption information to quantify the CO 2 emissions of diverse cities within the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region spanning from 2006 to 2020. The research aims to analyze the spatial progression patterns of CO 2 emissions across these urban centers, identify key determinants and their interrelations, and delve into the underlying mechanisms pivotal for advancing carbon mitigation strategies within urban agglomerations. Background: Prolonged exposure to air pollution has been linked to adverse respiratory health, yet the evidence concerning its association with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is inconsistent. The evidence of a greenness effect on chronic respiratory diseases is limited., Objective: This study aimed to investigate the association between long-term exposure to particulate matter (PM 2.5 and PM 10 ), black carbon (BC), nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ), ozone (O 3 ) and greenness (as measured by the normalized difference vegetation index - NDVI) and incidence of self-reported chronic bronchitis or COPD (CB/COPD)., Methods: We analyzed data from 5355 adults from 7 centers participating in the Respiratory Health in Northern Europe (RHINE) study. Mean exposures to air pollution and greenness were assessed at available residential addresses in 1990, 2000 and 2010 using air dispersion models and satellite data, respectively. Poisson regression with log person-time as an offset was employed to analyze the association between air pollution, greenness, and CB/COPD incidence, adjusting for confounders., Results: Overall, there were 328 incident cases of CB/COPD during 2010-2023. Despite wide statistical uncertainty, we found a trend for a positive association between NO 2 exposure and CB/COPD incidence, with incidence rate ratios (IRRs) per 10 μg/m³ difference ranging between 1.13 (95% CI: 0.90-1.41) in 1990 and 1.18 (95% CI: 0.96-1.45) in 2000. O 3 showed a tendency for inverse association with CB/COPD incidence (IRR from 0.84 (95% CI: 0.66-1.07) in 2000 to 0.88 (95% CI: 0.69-1.14) in 2010. No consistent association was found between PM, BC and greenness with CB/COPD incidence across different exposure time windows., Conclusion: Consistent with prior research, our study suggests that individuals exposed to higher concentrations of NO 2 may face an elevated risk of developing COPD, although evidence remains inconclusive. The growing effects of climate change on Malaysia's coastal ecology heighten worries about air pollution, specifically caused by urbanization and industrial activity in the maritime sector. Trucks and vessels are particularly noteworthy for their substantial contribution to gas emissions, including nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ), which is the primary gas released in port areas. The application of advanced analysis techniques was spurred by the air pollution resulting from the combustion of fossil fuels such as fuel oil, natural gas and gasoline in vessels. The study utilized satellite photos captured by the Tropospheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) on the Sentinel-5P satellite to evaluate the levels of NO 2 gas pollution in Malaysia's port areas and exclusive economic zone. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, unrestricted gas emissions led to persistently high levels of NO 2 in the analyzed areas. The temporary cessation of marine industry operations caused by the pandemic, along with the halting of vessels to prevent the spread of COVID-19, resulted in a noticeable decrease in NO 2 gas pollution. In light of these favourable advancements, it is imperative to emphasize the need for continuous investigation and collaborative endeavours to further alleviate air contamination in Malaysian port regions, while simultaneously acknowledging the wider consequences of climate change on the coastal ecology. Background: Asthma exacerbations are an important cause of emergency department visits but much remains unknown about the role of environmental triggers including viruses and allergenic pollen. A better understanding of spatio-temporal variation in exposure and risk posed by viruses and pollen types could help prioritize public health interventions., Objective: Here we quantify the effects of regionally important Cupressaceae pollen, tree pollen, other pollen types, rhinovirus, seasonal coronavirus, respiratory syncytial virus, and influenza on asthma-related emergency department visits for people living near eight pollen monitoring stations in Texas., Methods: We used age stratified Poisson regression analyses to quantify the effects of allergenic pollen and viruses on asthma-related emergency department visits., Results: Young children (<5 years of age) had high asthma-related emergency department rates (24.1 visits/1,000,000 person-days), which were mainly attributed to viruses (51.2%). School-aged children also had high rates (20.7 visits/1,000,000 person-days), which were attributed to viruses (57.0%), Cupressaceae pollen (0.7%), and tree pollen (2.8%). Adults had lower rates (8.1 visits/1,000,000 person-days) which were attributed to viruses (25.4%), Cupressaceae pollen (0.8%), and tree pollen (2.3%). The cities of North India, such as Delhi, face a significant public health threat from severe air pollution. Between October 2021 and January 2022, 79 % of Delhi's daily average PM 2.5 (Particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter ≤ 2.5 μm) values exceeded 100 μg/m 3 (the permissible level being 60 μg/m 3 as per Indian standards). In response to this acute exposure, using Respiratory Face Masks (RFMs) is a cost-effective solution to reduce immediate health risks while policymakers develop long-term emission control plans. Our research focuses on the health and economic benefits of using RFMs to prevent acute exposure to PM 2.5 pollution in Delhi for different age groups. Our findings indicate that, among the fifty chosen RFMs, M50 has greatest potential to prevent short-term excess mortality (908 in age ranges 5-44), followed by M49 (745) and M48 (568). These RFMs resulted in estimated economic benefits of 500.6 (46 %), 411.1 (37 %), and 313.4 (29 %) million Indian Rupee (INR), respectively during October-January 2021-22. By wearing RFMs such as M50, M49, and M48 during episodes of bad air quality, it is estimated that 13 % of short-term excess mortality and associated costs could be saved if at least 30 % of Delhi residents followed an alert issued by an operational Air Quality Early Warning System (AQEWS) developed by the Ministry of Earth Sciences. Our research suggests that RFMs can notably decrease health and economic burdens amid peak PM 2.5 pollution in post-monsoon and winter seasons until long-term emission reduction strategies are adopted. It is suggested that an advisory may be crafted in collaboration with statutory bodies and should be disseminated to assist the vulnerable population in using RFMs during winter. As part of its commitment to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the U.S. annually develops a national estimate of methane emissions from municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills by aggregating activity data from each facility. Since 2010, the U.S. has reported a 20 % decrease in MSW landfill emissions despite a 21 % increase in tons disposed. Operator-submitted data were investigated to understand the causes of this decline. In the U.S., operators of landfills with a gas collection and control system (GCCS) calculate their facility's emissions via two separate approaches - (1) first-order decay (FOD) and (2) collection efficiency assumption (CEA) - and select either result to feed into the annual inventory. The FOD model predicts methane generation proportional to waste disposal and that approach calculated a 19 % increase in total methane generated from 2010 to 2022, whereas generation via the CEA approach decreased by 8.9 %. The amount of measured methane collected has increased 7.5 % for the same years. Discrepancies between the two models' generated methane, assumed gas collection efficiencies, and oxidized methane compound into substantive differences in national estimates. Operators more frequently select the CEA method, which results in decreased national estimates. If only the FOD method was used, U.S. MSW landfill emissions would be 1.3-1.7 times greater than current estimates which is similar to recent extrapolations from remote sensing campaigns in the U.S. Both models contain parameters with large inherent uncertainty. This study analyzed pollutant emissions from laser cutters used in modeling in a laboratory, which can have harmful effects on indoor air quality and health. Four conditions were tested: material thickness, laser cutter strength, minimum strength per thickness, and air purifier level. Four pollutants were analyzed: PM 2.5 , HCHO, VOCs, and CO 2 . The study found that the emissions of PM 2.5 , HCHO, and VOCs increased with paperboard thickness, while CO 2 emissions were not significant. PM 2.5 was more affected by laser cutting strength, while HCHO and VOCs were more affected by paperboard thickness. Additionally, we analyzed the PM 2.5 emission rates based on the thickness of the paperboard and the laser cutting strength. Therefore, emission rates based on thickness and laser cutting strength ranged from 7275 to 18,783 μg/min. The air purifier significantly reduced PM 2.5 but not HCHO and VOCs. To reduce these gaseous pollutants, combining mechanical ventilation or using an air purifier with a filter that adsorbs HCHO and VOCs is effective. Background: The short-term adverse effects of ambient fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) and ozone (O 3 ) on anxiety disorders (ADs) remained inconclusive., Methods: We applied an individual-level time-stratified case-crossover study, which including 126,112 outpatient visits for ADs during 2019-2021 in Guangdong province, China, to investigate the association of short-term exposure to PM 2.5 and O 3 with outpatient visits for ADs, and estimate excess outpatient visits in South China. Daily residential air pollutant exposure assessments were performed by extracting grid data (spatial resolution: 1 km × 1 km) from validated datasets. We employed the conditional logistic regression model to quantify the associations and excess outpatient visits., Results: The results of the single-pollutant models showed that each 10 μg/m 3 increase of PM 2.5 and O 3 exposures was significantly associated with a 3.14 % (95 % confidence interval: 2.47 %, 3.81 %) and 0.88 % (0.49 %, 1.26 %) increase in odds of outpatient visits for ADs, respectively. These associations remained robust in 2-pollutant models. The proportion of outpatient visits attributable to PM 2.5 and O 3 exposures was up to 7.20 % and 8.93 %, respectively. Brick kiln emissions adversely affect air pollution and the health of workers and individuals living near the kilns; however, evidence of their impacts remains limited. We conducted a systematic review of brick kiln pollution (emissions, source contributions and personal exposures) and its effects on health. We extracted articles from electronic databases and through manual citation searching. We estimated pooled, sample-size-weighted means and standard deviations for personal exposures by job type; computed mean emission factors and pollutant concentrations by brick kiln design; and meta-analyzed differences in means or proportions for health outcomes between brick kiln workers and controls or for participants living near or far away from kilns. We identified 104 studies; 74 were conducted in South Asia. The most evaluated pollutants were particulate matter (PM; n = 48), sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ; n = 24) and carbon monoxide (CO; n = 22), and the most evaluated health outcomes were respiratory health (n = 34) and musculoskeletal disorders (n = 9). PM and CO emissions were higher among traditional than improved brick kilns. Mean respirable silica exposures were only measured in 4 (4%) studies and were as high as 620 μg/m 3 , exceeding the NIOSH recommended exposure limit by a factor of over 12. Brick kiln workers had consistently worse lung function, more respiratory symptoms, more musculoskeletal complaints, and more inflammation when compared to unexposed participants across studies; however, most studies had a small sample size and did not fully describe methods used for sampling or data collection. On average, brick kiln workers had worse health outcomes when compared to unexposed controls but study quality supporting the evidence was low. Few studies reported silica concentrations or personal exposures, but the few that did suggest that exposures are high. This research builds upon a previous study that explored the potential of the modified WIBS-4+ to selectively differentiate and detect different bioaerosol classes. The current work evaluates the influence of meteorological and air quality parameters on bioaerosol concentrations, specifically pollen and fungal spore dynamics. Temperature was found to be the most influential parameter in terms of pollen production and release, showing a strong positive correlation. Wind data analysis provided insights into the potential geographic origins of pollen and fungal spore concentrations. Fungal spores were primarily shown to originate from a westerly direction, corresponding to agricultural land use, whereas pollen largely originated from a North-easterly direction, corresponding to several forests. The influence of air quality was also analysed to understand its potential impact on the WIBS fluorescent parameters investigated. Most parameters had a negative association with fungal spore concentrations, whereas several anthropogenic influences showed notable positive correlations with daily pollen concentrations. This is attributed to similar driving forces (meteorological parameters) and geographical origins. In addition, the WIBS showed a significant correlation with anthropogenic pollutants originating from combustion sources, suggesting the potential for such modified spectroscopic instruments to be utilized as air quality monitors. By combining all meteorological and pollution data along with WIBS-4+ channel data, a set of Multiple Linear Regression (MLR) analyses were completed. Successful results with R 2 values ranging from 0.6 to 0.8 were recorded. Background: Preeclampsia is a multi-system hypertensive disorder of pregnancy that is a leading cause of maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. Prior studies disagree on the cause and even the presence of seasonal patterns in its incidence. Using unsuitable time windows for seasonal exposures can bias model results, potentially explaining these inconsistencies., Objectives: We aimed to investigate humidity and temperature as possible causes for seasonal trends in preeclampsia in Project Viva, a prebirth cohort in Boston, Massachusetts, considering only exposure windows that precede disease onset., Methods: Using the Parameter-elevation Relationships on Independent Slopes Model (PRISM) Climate Dataset, we estimated daily residential temperature and relative humidity (RH) exposures during pregnancy. Our primary multinomial regression adjusted for person-level covariates and season. Secondary analyses included distributed lag models (DLMs) and adjusted for ambient air pollutants including fine particulates (PM 2.5 ). We used Generalized Additive Mixed Models (GAMMs) for systolic blood pressure (SBP) trajectories across hypertensive disorder statuses to confirm exposure timing., Results: While preeclampsia is typically diagnosed late in pregnancy, GAMM-fitted SBP trajectories for preeclamptic and non-preeclamptic women began to diverge at around 20 weeks' gestation, confirming the need to only consider early exposures. In the primary analysis with 1776 women, RH in the early second trimester, weeks 14-20, was associated with significantly higher odds of preeclampsia (OR per IQR increase: 1.81, 95% CI: 1.10, 2.97). The DLM corroborated this window, finding a positive association from weeks 12-20. There were no other significant associations between RH or temperature and preeclampsia or gestational hypertension in any other time period., Discussion: The association between preeclampsia and RH in the early second trimester was robust to model choice, suggesting that RH may contribute to seasonal trends in preeclampsia incidence. The removal of volatile methyl siloxanes (VMS) from landfill biogas is crucial for clean energy utilization. VMS are usually found together with aromatic compounds in landfill biogas of which toluene is the major representative. In the present study, two biofilters (BFs) packed with either woodchips and compost (WC) or perlite (PER) were used to study the (co-) removal of octamethyltrisiloxane (L3) and octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4) from gas in presence and absence of toluene, used as a representative aromatic compound. The presence of low inlet toluene concentrations (315 ± 19 - 635 ± 80 mg toluene m - 3 ) enhanced the VMS elimination capacity (EC) in both BFs by a factor of 1.8 to 12.6. The highest removal efficiencies for D4 (57.1 ± 1.1 %; EC = 0.12 ± 0.01 gD4 m -3 h - 1 ) and L3 (52.0 ± 0.6 %; EC = 0.23 ± 0.01 gL3 m -3 h - 1 ) were observed in the BF packed with WC. The first section of the BFs (EBRT = 9 min), where toluene was (almost) completely removed, accounted for the majority (87.7 ± 0.6 %) of the total VMS removal. Microbial analysis revealed the impact of VMS and toluene in the activated sludge, showing a clear selection for certain genera in samples influenced by VMS in the presence (X 2 ) or absence (X 1 ) of toluene, such as Pseudomonas (X 1  = 0.91 and X 2  = 12.0 %), Sphingobium (X 1  = 0.09 and X 2  = 4.04 %), Rhodococcus (X 1  = 0.42 and X 2  = 3.91 %), and Bacillus (X 1  = 7.15 and X 2  = 3.84 %). With 24 million inhabitants and 6.6 million vehicles on the roads, Karachi, Pakistan ranks among the world's most polluted cities due to high levels of fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ). This study aims to investigate PM 2.5 mass, seasonal and temporal variability, chemical characterization, source apportionment, and health risk assessment at two urban sites in Karachi. Samples were analyzed using ion chromatography and dual-wavelength optical transmissometer for various inorganic components (anions, cations, and trace elements) and black carbon (BC). Several PM 2.5 pollution episodes were frequently observed, with annual mean concentrations at Kemari (140 ± 179 μg/m 3 ) and Malir (95 ± 40.9 μg/m 3 ) being significantly above the World Health Organization's guidelines of 5 μg/m 3 . Chemical composition at both sites exhibited seasonal variability, with higher pollution levels in winter and fall and lower concentrations in summer. The annual average BC concentrations were 4.86 ± 5.29 μg/m 3 and 4.52 ± 3.68 μg/m 3 , respectively. A Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) analysis identified 5 factors, crustal, sea salt, vehicular exhaust, fossil-fuel combustion, and industrial emission. The health risk assessment indicated a higher number of deaths in colder seasons (fall and winter) at the Kemari (328,794 and 287,814) and Malir (228,406 and 165,737) sites and potential non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks to children from metals. The non-carcinogenic risk of PM 2.5 bound Pb, Fe, Zn, Mn, Cr, Cu and Ni via inhalation exposure were within the acceptable level (<1) for adults. However, potential non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risk posed by Pb and Cr through inhalation were observed for children. The findings exhibit critical levels of air pollution that exceed the safe limits in Karachi, posing significant health risks to children and sensitive groups. Air quality (AQ) significantly impacts human health, influenced by both natural phenomena and human activities. In 2021, heightened awareness of AQ's health impacts prompted the revision of the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines, advocating for stricter pollution standards. However, research on AQ has predominantly focused on high-income countries and densely populated cities, neglecting low- and middle-income countries, particularly Pacific Island Countries, Territories, and States (PICTS). This systematic review compiles existing peer-reviewed literature on AQ research in PICTS to assess the current state of knowledge and emphasize the need for further investigation. A systematic literature search yielded 40 papers from databases including Web of Science, Scopus, and Embase. Among the 26 PICTS, only 6 (Hawai'i, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, New Caledonia, Republic of Marshall Islands, and Pacific) have been subject to AQ-related research, with 4 considering the World Health Organization (WHO) parameters and 26 addressing non-WHO parameters. Analysis reveals AQ parameters often exceed 2021 WHO guidelines for PM 2.5 , PM 10 , SO 2 , and CO, raising concerns among regional governments. Studies primarily focused on urban, agricultural, rural, and open ocean areas, with 15 based on primary data and 14 on both primary and secondary sources. Research interests and funding sources dictated the methods used, with a predominant focus on environmental risks over social, economic, and technological impacts. Although some papers addressed health implications, further efforts are needed in this area. This review underscores the urgent need for ongoing AQ monitoring efforts in PICTS to generate spatially and temporally comparable data. Co-combustion of industrial and municipal solid wastes has emerged as the most promising disposal technology, yet its effect on unknown contaminants generation remains rarely revealed due to waste complexity. Hence, six batches of large-scale engineering experiments were designed in an incinerator of 650 t/d, which overcame the inauthenticity and deviation of laboratory tests. 953-1772 non-targeted compounds were screened in fly ash. Targeting the impact of co-combustion, a pseudo-component matrix model was innovatively integrated to quantitatively extract nine components from complex wastes grouped into biomass and plastic. Thus, the influence was evaluated across eight dimensions, covering molecular characteristics and toxicity. The effect of co-combustion with biomass pseudo-components was insignificant. However, co-combustion with high ratios of plastic pseudo-components induced higher potential risks, significantly promoting the formation of unsaturated hydrocarbons, highly unsaturated compounds (DBE≥15), and cyclic compounds by 19 %- 49 %, 17 %- 31 %, and 7 %- 27 %, respectively. Especially, blending with high ratios of PET plastic pseudo-components produced more species of contaminants. DNA adducts are widely recognized as biomarkers of exposure to environmental carcinogens and associated health effects in toxicological and epidemiological studies. This study presents a targeted and sensitive method for comprehensive DNA adductome analysis using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with triple-quadrupole tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-QqQ-MS/MS). The method was developed using calf thymus DNA, with careful optimization of mass spectrometric parameters, chromatographic separation conditions, and pretreatment methods. Ultimately, a targeted method was established for 41 DNA adducts, which showed good linearity (R 2 ≥0.992), recovery (80.1-119.4 %), accuracy (81.3-117.8 %), and precision (relative standard deviation <14.2 %). The established method was employed to analyze DNA adducts in peripheral blood cells from pregnant women in Shanxi and Beijing. Up to 23 DNA adducts were successfully detected in samples of varying sizes. From 2 μg of maternal DNA samples, seven specific adducts were identified: 5-methyl-2'-deoxycytidine (5-MedC), 5-hydroxymethyl-2'-deoxycytidine (5-HmdC), N 6 -methyl-2'-deoxyadenosine (N 6 -MedA), 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), 5-hydroxy-2'-deoxycytidine (5-OHdC), 1,N 6 -etheno-2'-deoxyadenosine (1,N 6 -εdA), and N 2 -methyl-2'-deoxyguanosine (N 2 -MedG). In recent decades, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), the primary organic pollutants associated with particulate matter (PM), have attracted significant attention due to their carcinogenic and mutagenic potential. However, past studies have lacked exploration into the diurnal variation characteristics of PAHs, primarily due to limited analytical technical capabilities. This study utilized a thermal-desorption device coupled with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (TD-GC/MS) to identify the levels of PAHs in PM 2.5 during short periods (3-hr) and aimed to investigate the diurnal variations, possible sources, and potential health risks associated with PM 2.5 -bound PAHs in northern Taiwan. The mean concentration of total PAHs in PM 2.5 was 1.22 ± 0.69 ng m -3 during the sampling period, with high molecular weight PAHs dominating. Source apportionment by the positive matrix factorization (PMF) model indicated that industrial emissions and traffic emissions (57.7 %) were the predominant sources of PAHs, with petroleum volatilization and coal/biomass combustion (42.3 %) making a lesser contribution. Diurnal variations of industrial and traffic emissions showed higher concentrations during traffic rush hours, while petroleum volatilization and coal/biomass combustion displayed higher concentrations at noon. Results from the potential source contribution function (PSCF) and the concentration weighted trajectory (CWT) model suggested that industrial emissions and traffic emissions mostly originated from local sources and were concentrated in the vicinity of the sampling site and the coastal area of western Taiwan. Source-attributed excess cancer risk (ECR) showed that industrial and traffic emissions had the highest cancer risks during morning traffic peak hours (1.69 ×10 -5 ), while petroleum volatilization and coal/biomass combustion reached the maximum at noon (4.75 ×10 -6 ). Although low-cost air quality sensors facilitate the implementation of denser air quality monitoring networks, enabling a more realistic assessment of individual exposure to airborne pollutants, their sensitivity to multifaceted field conditions is often overlooked in laboratory testing. This gap was addressed by introducing an in-field calibration and validation of three PAQMON 1.0 mobile sensing low-cost platforms developed at the Mining and Metallurgy Institute in Bor, Republic of Serbia. A configuration tailored for monitoring PM 2.5 and PM 10 mass concentrations along with meteorological parameters was employed for outdoor measurement campaigns in Bor, spanning heating (HS) and non-heating (NHS) seasons. A statistically significant positive linear correlation between raw PM 2.5 and PM 10 measurements during both campaigns (R > 0.90, p ≤ 0.001) was observed. Measurements obtained from the uncalibrated NOVA SDS011 sensors integrated into the PAQMON 1.0 platforms exhibited a substantial and statistically significant correlation with the GRIMM EDM180 monitor (R > 0.60, p ≤ 0.001). The calibration models based on linear and Random Forest (RF) regression were compared. RF models provided more accurate descriptions of air quality, with average adjR 2 values for air quality variables in the range of 0.70 to 0.80 and average NRMSE values between 0.35 and 0.77. RF-calibrated PAQMON 1.0 platforms displayed divergent levels of accuracy across different pollutant concentration ranges, achieving a data quality objective of 50% during both measurement campaigns. For PM 2.5 , uncertainty ( U r ) was below 50% for concentrations between 9.06 and 34.99 μg/m 3 in HS and 5.75 and 17.58 μg/m 3 in NHS, while for PM 10 , it stayed below 50% from 19.11 to 51.13 μg/m 3 in HS and 11.72 to 38.86 μg/m 3 in NHS., (© 2024. One of the primary causes of urban atmospheric particulate matter, which is harmful to human health in addition to affecting air quality and atmospheric visibility, is road dust. This study used online monitoring equipment to examine the characteristics of road dust emissions, the effects of temperature, humidity, and wind speed on road dust, as well as the correlation between road and high-space particulate matter concentrations. A section of a real road in Jinhua City, South China, was chosen for the study. The findings demonstrate that the concentration of road dust particles has a very clear bimodal single-valley distribution throughout the day, peaking between 8:00 and 11:00 and 19:00 and 21:00 and troughing between 14:00 and 16:00. Throughout the year, there is a noticeable seasonal change in the concentration of road dust particles, with the highest concentration in the winter and the lowest in the summer. Simultaneously, it has been discovered that temperature and wind speed have the most effects on particle concentration. The concentration of road dust particles reduces with increasing temperature and wind speed. The particle concentrations of road particles and those from urban environmental monitoring stations have a strong correlation, although the trend in the former is not entirely consistent, and the changes in the former occur approximately 1 h after the changes in the latter., (© 2024. This study investigated seasonal fluctuations in particulate matter (PM) concentrations, including carbon and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) components, in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, focusing on ultrafine particles (UFPs or ≤ 100 nm). UFP levels were notably higher during the dry season, averaging 23.73 ± 3.7 µg/m 3 compared to 19.64 ± 3.4 µg/m 3 in the wet season, attributed to increased emissions from vehicles and agricultural burning. In contrast, lower concentrations during the wet season were due to scavenging effect of rain. When compared to other Southeast Asian cities, UFP levels in Phnom Penh were significantly higher during the dry season, surpassing those in cities like Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur. Seasonal variations in carbonaceous components showed higher elemental carbon (EC) and total carbon (TC) during the dry season, with EC/TC ratios suggesting substantial influence from vehicular emissions and biomass burning. PAH analysis revealed seasonal disparities, with higher concentrations of benzo[b]fluoranthene (BbF) and benzo[k]fluoranthene (BkF) during the wet season, whereas fluoranthene (Flu) and pyrene (Pyr) were consistently present, indicating diverse PAH sources. The Flu/(Flu + Pyr) ratios, indicative of biomass burning, were higher in the dry season. Correlations between PAHs and carbon components confirmed combustion as a significant source of PAHs, aligning with global trends.
