Dal 2018 l’Université Bordeaux-Montaigne è impegnata in attività di ricerca presso il santuario chtonio di Agrigento. Nel 2021 indagini stratigrafici sono state realizzate nel tempietto a Est di Porta V e nel cosiddetto torrione a Ovest di detta porta. Da quest’ultimo saggio, da uno strato di riempimento, proviene il frammento qui presentato. Si tratta di una piccola porzione di statua in terracotta femminile con policromia ben preservata. Si conserva parte della porzione destra del volto, con capigliatura a frangetta e breve polos decorato con motivo a meandro. Lo studio stilistico ha permesso di riscontrare una forte influenza selinuntina, sebbene analisi petrografiche abbiano dimostrato si tratti di una produzione locale. Sarebbe dunque opera di un artigiano itinerante il quale da Selinunte si è spostato ad Agrigento. Since 2018, the Université Bordeaux-Montaigne has been engaged in research activities at the Chthonian sanctuary in Agrigento. In 2021, archaeological excavations were carried out in the “tempietto” to the east of Gate V and in the so-called “torrione” to the west of the aforementioned gate. From the latter, from a fill layer, comes the fragment presented here. It is a small portion of a female terracotta statue with well-preserved polychromy. It depict part of the right portion of the face, with fringed hair and short polos decorated with a meander motif. Stylistic study has revealed a strong selinuntine influence, although petrographic analysis has shown it to be a local production. It would therefore be the work of an itinerant craftsman who moved from Selinunte to Agrigento.

Esta tesis doctoral se basa en la cuestión de la no integración de los ciudadanos tunecinos en la provincia de Agrigento, debido al progresivo endurecimiento de las normas italianas en materia de inmigración. He elegido Agrigento porque es la Provincia donde vivo y se encuentra una numerosa comunidad tunecina, que es la más representativa de las de ciudadanos extracomunitarios. La inmigración es el acontecimiento más importante en el escenario de la Unión Europea, en adelante UE, de las últimas décadas, debido a la continua y creciente dimensión del fenómeno.La UE ha demostrado a lo largo del tiempo sus limitaciones normativas que han tenido como consecuencia una manifiesta incapacidad para aplicar políticas sociales igualitarias en favor de los procesos de integración. Italia, con Sicilia como puerta de entrada del sur de Europa, ha sufrido un cambio de la sociedad civil, afrontando el desafío de aplicar políticas sociales para la integración, que, debido a la escasez de recursos y a la rigidez progresiva de las normas, no se aplican plenamente. Europa ha demostrado a lo largo del tiempo sus límites normativos y ha puesto de manifiesto su incapacidad para desarrollar políticas sociales, que, por el contrario, necesitan ser reelaboradas, desarrolladas orgánicamente para garantizar el mismo nivel de protección a todos los nacionales de terceros países presentes en el territorio de la UE. Esta desigualdad genera políticas de acogida e integración diferentes en cada uno de los Estados de la UE, influenciadas por la historia de cada uno de ellos. En Italia la inmigración se mueve en el contexto de una profunda crisis económica y social, y cualquier intento de modificar las políticas de integración determina, en la mayoría de los casos, la falta de uno de los elementos considerados esenciales para los procesos de integración, el trabajo, las oportunidades escolares, las relaciones sociales y la capacidad de acogida de la sociedad. El objetivo es argumentar cómo la evolución rígida de las normas obstaculiza la realización de los procesos de integración, independientemente de la política de los gobiernos que se suceden a la cabeza del país. Se empieza con el análisis del desarrollo de las normas y políticas relativas a la inmigración. Los resultados se construyeron a través del estudio de la evolución normativa y de la investigación de campo, en la que participaron varios ciudadanos tunecinos, que permitieron una definición precisa de las críticas normativas que obstaculizan los itinerarios complementarios. Este escenario ha permitido comprender la realidad social y la influencia que las normas ejercen en la relación entre los ciudadanos tunecinos y el acceso a los itinerarios complementarios., This doctoral thesis is based on the question of the non-integration of Tunisian citizens in the province of Agrigento, due to the progressive tightening of Italian immigration rules. I have chosen Agrigento because it is the province where I live and there is a large Tunisian community, which is the most representative of those of non-EU citizens. Immigration is the most important event on the scene of the European Union, henceforth the EU, in recent decades, due to the continuous and growing dimension of the phenomenon. Europe has demonstrated over time its regulatory limits and has demonstrated its inability to develop social policies, which, on the contrary, need to be reworked, developed organically to ensure the same level of protection for all third-country nationals present on EU territory. This inequality generates different reception and integration policies in each of the EU states, influenced by the history of each of them. This thesis examines the water resource management in two Greek colonies in Magna Graecia, Akragas and Metaponto, and the relationship between resource management and political regimes. It asks how similar ancient urban theory was to the practical reality, and if different forms of government made different provisions for water management. Chapter 1 outlines urban and health theories found in the works of ancient theorists. It debunks the idea that Hippodamos was the inventor of grid planning, while introducing the concept of ‘total’ city planning. The focus of Classical scholarship on Athens necessitates discussions of several Athenian water systems and how resource management changed (or continued) through different governments in Athens as a point of comparison for Akragas and Metaponto. This chapter focuses on literary analysis and introduces the controversial Southeast Fountain House, with an in-depth consideration of the fountain’s naming and dating problems. Chapter 2 contains the case studies of Akragas and Metaponto and an exploration of the hydrogeology at the two sites, with an introduction to the hydrological phenomenon of karst activity. A discussion of their unique water features—the kolymbethra at Akragas and the canals in the chora of Metaponto—connects the deliberate planning that occurred in both cities to Hippodamos and the urban theorists. Chapter 3 more fully explores the role of tyrants and democracies in water management. Regardless of authorship, water resource management and water systems are necessary for any city, and so most tyrannical water infrastructure continued to be used and expanded and improved upon even under different governments. Los reyes de España, entre los siglos XVI y XVII, utilizaron las sedes episcopales del reino de Sicilia como «reserva de caza» en favor de distinguidos prelados españoles de origen judeoconverso. Y eso porque, de hecho, su sangre «manchada» les dificultaba acceder a las sillas ibéricas. Lo que se pretende averiguar es si la condición judeoconversa de esos prelados «influyó» de alguna manera en los matices tridentinos de su actividad pastoral, «radicalizándolos», para demostrar la veracidad de su lealtad a la fe católica, en nombre de la cual habían sido perseguidos sus antepasados. En este ensayo se abordarán los casos del cardenal Luis de Torres, arzobispo de Monreale (1588-1609), y de Juan de Orozco y Covarrubias, obispo de Agrigento (1594-1606), ejemplares pastores y reformadores de sus diócesis. Between the 16th and 17th centuries the kings of Spain appointed distinguished Spanish prelates of converso origin as bishops in Sicily because their «tainted» blood prevented them from holding Spanish episcopal seats. The article aims to establish whether the converso condition of these bishops could have influenced their pastoral reforms as well as «radicalised» their application of the Tridentine model. If so, this could be interpreted as a clear proof of their loyalty to the Catholic faith in the name of which their ancestors were persecuted. This work will shed light on the cases of Cardinal Luis de Torres, Archbishop of Monreale (1588-1609), and of Juan de Orozco y Covarrubias, Bishop of Agrigento (1594-1606), both model guides and reformers in their dioceses. Their converso descent as well as family entourage and the ecclesiastical careers built by some of their relatives in Spain, Rome, and Sicily will be analysed.

Halbband 2022, The gymnasium of Agrigento is one of the most important, if not the most important gymnasium in Sicily and the western Mediterranean more generally, because of its size, design, and chronology. While parts of a race-track section and a pool were excavated between the 1950s and 2005 and were published in 2009 and 2011, crucial questions remain open: the extension, design, and most notably the existence and location of a palaestra; the construction date in the 2nd century B.C. or the Augustan period; and the urban context. To answer these questions, a project was launched in 2019 in cooperation between the Parco Archeologico e Paesaggistico Valle dei Templi di Agrigento and the Freie Universität Berlin, and a first season, together with the British School at Rome, was carried out in 2020. This paper presents the results of this first campaign, which included first, a geophysical survey of the area around the gymnasium and of a field to the north of the Hellenistic-Roman temple; and second, an architectural survey of unpublished features and work in the archives and storerooms of the Parco Archeologico.

La lettura del quadro complessivo intende mettere in luce che l‟inclusione dei minori stranieri è strettamente connessa all‟alfabetizzazione linguistica e culturale, ma si realizza pienamente solo se accompagnata da una necessaria e coerente attività di formazione in servizio da intenderrsi come leva strategica per il miglioramento continuo della qualità dei processi di insegnamentoapprendimento. Solo integrando istruzione e formazione possiamo dare senso ai percorsi di alfabetizzazione culturale e motivare così i minori stranieri prefigurando loro un futuro qualitativamente diverso. With this contribution we intend to propose a reflection on the results of the ongoing investigation, on some interesting findings of great scientific interest, which came to light between 2002 and 2004, during the archaeological excavation works carried out inside a religious building of great artistic, cultural and scientific interest, the church of Sant Mary dei Greci, in the historical centre of Agrigento (Sicily). The excavation campaign, carried out on an area never before subjected to archaeological investigation, has achieved results above expectations. In fact, an interesting funeral system has come to light, buried for centuries, and until then unknown, which occupies the entire space of the church. These are archaeological finds belonging to various eras: ossuaries, small crypts, Arab tombs, which certainly demonstrate the systematic use of the church as a cemetery during the centuries, but the large eighteenth-century funeral crypt in the central nave appears interesting and original.

The debate over whether we are entering the Anthropocene Epoch focuses on the unequal consumption of the Earth system’s resources at the expense of nature’s regenerative abilities. To find a new point of balance with nature, it is useful to look back in time to understand how the so-called “Great Acceleration”—the surge in the consumption of the planet’s resources—hastened the arrival of the Anthropocene. Some particular places—for various reasons—survived the Great Acceleration and, as time capsules, have preserved more or less intact some landscape features that have disappeared elsewhere. How can we enhance these living archives that have come down to us? Through the analysis of the case study of the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento (Sicily, Italy), the article presents several initiatives that have tried to answer this question. For example, the pre-Anthropocene landscape of the Valley of the Temples has preserved rare specimens of some plant species from which living gene banks have been built for the propagation of species, such as the Living Museum of the Almond Tree. In addition, the Kolymbethra, an ancient example of a Mediterranean garden, has been brought back to life revealing finds related to Greek and Arab cultivation and irrigation systems. The research perspectives opened by the “disappeared landscapes” show that the knowledge of the historical landscape, in particular the mechanisms behind its resilience, is indispensable for countering the unsustainable voracity of the Anthropocene and rediscover a renewed synergy between humankind and nature.

Il contributo esamina la categoria dei busti fittili femminili in ottica contestuale, concentrando l'attenzione su due casi tra i più significativi a oggi noti: il Santuario rupestre di Agrigento e il Santuario del cd. altare di Demetra a Lipari. L'esame comparato consente di evidenziare sia le ricorrenze sia le specifiche connotazioni che la formula assume nella pratica rituale di ciascun santuario. The contribution examines the category of female fictile busts from a contextual point of view, focusing attention on two of the most significant cases known to date: the rupestrian sanctuary of Agrigento and the sanctuary of the cd. altar of Demeter in Lipari. The comparative examination allows to highlight both the recurrences and the specific connotations that the formula assumes in the ritual practice of each sanctuary.

African Red Slip wares (ARS) are among the most common classes found in Sicily and a reliable chronological marker dated from the end of the 1st to the 7th century AD. We will here analyse data concerning the ARS wares collected during the Cignana and Himera surveys, carried out by the University of Palermo in northern and southern Sicily. The quantitative approach based on the Minimum Number of Vessels (MNV) allowed us to compare two different areas and therefore to detect differences and similarities in pottery distribution. The interdisciplinary (archaeological/archaeometric) approach helped us to improve the typological identifications of pottery and to identify with precision the origin of the imports. As a consequence, this research will help to enhance the understanding of the trade routes existing between different regions of Tunisia and Sicily during the centuries.
