Research has indicated the importance of vocabulary knowledge and background knowledge in second/foreign language (L2) listening comprehension. However, previous studies treated these two factors separately, and no study has examined the simultaneous contribution of these two factors to L2 listening comprehension. Therefore, the aim of this study is to examine whether background knowledge moderates the relationship between vocabulary knowledge and L2 listening comprehension. To this end, one-hundred and fifty-one L2 learners participated in this study and completed instruments measuring constructs of vocabulary knowledge (breadth and depth of vocabulary knowledge), background knowledge, and listening comprehension. Results of the study indicated that, first, measures of both breadth and depth of vocabulary knowledge contributed to the listening comprehension while vocabulary breadth was a stronger predictor. Second, findings of the moderation analysis revealed that background knowledge moderated the relationship between vocabulary knowledge and listening comprehension. These findings suggest that background knowledge can help language learners to have a better performance in listening comprehension tests only if they have high levels of vocabulary knowledge.

Abstract There is an unmet need for a more accurate molecular imaging radiotracer in the field of non-seminomatous germ cell tumors (NSGCT). The clinical problem is that no single imaging modality is able to differentiate teratoma from necrotic tissue in NSGCTs, which the nuclear medicine techniques are no exception. The exponential growth in the list of potentially promising radiotracers may hold promise in the future for imaging of NSGCTs. Here, we have reviewed the past efforts and potential future advances in this field.

This study aimed to examine grit and its components (i.e. perseverance of effort and consistency of interest) in the foreign language (L2) classrooms by investigating its relations to personal best goals, L2 emotions (i.e. enjoyment and anxiety) and L2 achievement. We further examined whether grit could predict L2 achievement when other constructs are included in the analyses. For this purpose, a total of 226 participants who were studying English in a language institute completed the questionnaire. When grit was the only predictor of L2 achievement, results indicated that only perseverance of effort could significantly predict L2 achievement. However, when other predictors were included in the analyses, neither of grit components could predict L2 achievement. We further found that both grit components predicted L2 anxiety, while only perseverance of effort predicted L2 enjoyment and personal best goals. Finally, we found that perseverance of effort was indirectly related to L2 achievement through personal bests. These findings show the problematic role of consistency of interest in predicting L2 achievement reflecting the arguments made in the field of education. Results of the study provide us with important findings concerning the mechanism underlying the relations between grit and L2 achievement and how this relation might be mediated through personal best goals.

Abstract Background MicroRNAs have been proposed as a novel regulatory biomarker for gene expression and early diagnosis of cancers. In this study, we evaluate the expression level of miR-31-5p in the serum of patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma, oral lichen planus, and a healthy control group to obtain a primary diagnostic biomarker. Materials and methods Serum was collected from patients with oral lichen planus (n = 32), patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (n = 35), and healthy subjects (n = 32). MicroRNA was isolated from serum and cDNA was made from it. Then, the quantitative and qualitative expression of miR-31-5p levels among the samples was checked by the qRT-PCR method. Results In this study, three groups were quantitatively and qualitatively analyzed for miR-31-5p expression in serum. Background: Cancer continues to be one of the greatest challenges in modern medicine and is second only to cardiovascular disease as the main cause of death. Breast cancer in particular is responsible for 15% of deaths in women. In this study, Lactobacillus bulgaricus was microencapsulated using a chitosan/alginate mixture. Parameters such as chitosan, alginate, and L. bulgaricus populations were optimized using Design Expert software. The responses were loading efficiency, particle size, release, and ζ-potential. Subsequently, the cytotoxicity of the optimized ratio of chitosan/alginate nanoparticles was investigated on MCF-7 cancer cells. Results: The research revealed that optimal conditions for the mentioned variables were a chitosan concentration of 1% w/w, an alginate concentration of 1% w/w, and a L. bulgaricus count of 8.15 CFU/ml. Following numerical optimization, the loading efficacy = 91.15%, the release = 71.55%, the polydispersity index = 0.11, and the ζ-potential = 61.94 based on numerical optimization. Findings revealed that miracle drinks with L. bulgaricus-loaded chitosan/alginate microcapsule ratios exhibited toxic and potential apoptotic effects on MCF-7 cancer cells. This study showed that a miracle drink prepared with the optimal ratio of probiotic nanoparticles stops cells in the S and G2/M phases. Conclusions: The results show that Miracle drink supplemented with L. bulgaricus loaded-chitosan/alginate nanoparticles has a toxic and lethal effect on MCF-7 cancer cells. Extended Abstract Background: Wheat is a plant that is cultivated in different environments around the world and provides approximately 20% of the energy and 25% of the protein needs of the world population. Durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L. var durum) is an industrial product that is mainly used in the pasta production industry. In addition, the difference in the price of durum wheat in the world markets compared to bread wheat has prompted some countries to increase the area under cultivation and production of this crop and start its export to supply their bread wheat needs through imports, thereby saving large sums of foreign currency. Although it is often believed that durum wheat produces less yield than bread wheat, the results of national uniformity tests conducted in recent years have shown that not only the yield of durum wheat is not lower than that of bread wheat but also the promising lines of durum wheat has an increase in yield in the conditions of the tests. If we consider a 20% increase in the price of its grain, the development and promotion of its cultivation in tense areas can provide more economic benefits for the producers and the country. The production of crop cultivars with appropriate characteristics, high yields, and stable production is one of the main goals of wheat breeding programs. Therefore, the identification of suitable lines and cultivars for cultivation in each geographical region is of special importance. It is possible to achieve such a goal by evaluating the set of new lines of each plant in each region. According to the special program of the Seed and Plant Improvement Institute (SPII), which plans to increase the self-reliance coefficient of wheat for the introduction of new varieties, this study also aims to obtain more productive and promising durum wheat genotypes in the northern region of Khuzestan province. Methods: To identify the best durum wheat lines in terms of yield and other agricultural traits, an experiment was carried out during two 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 crop years in the research farm of Safiabad Agricultural and Natural Resources Research Center, Dezful. New durum wheat lines (n = 76) were evaluated observationally along with three control varieties Aran, Hana, and Mehregan in the first year and 37 best lines of the first year were evaluated in the form of an alpha lattice design, along with three control varieties, in the second year. In addition to seed yield, other important agricultural traits, including heading date, physiological maturity date, length of seed filling period, lodging rate, plant height, and 1000 kernel weight, were calculated and considered in the final selection. For the results of each year, statistical parameters (indices of central tendency) were measured using Excel software. The correlation between traits was measured using SPSS software. In addition, MetaR software was used to analyze the variance of the Alphalatis design. To group the tested lines, a dendrogram was drawn using the Ward method and SPSS software. Results: The results of the trait analysis in the first year showed that the tested lines had a very high variety so that their yield ranged from 5883 kg/ha for the weakest line to 8350 kg/ha for the best line, and the average yield of all tested lines was 7231 kg/ha. In addition, the average yield of 37 selected lines in the second year was about 6423 kg/ha, which was about one ton less than the yield of the same lines in the first year (7397 kg/ha). One of the main reasons for this decrease in yield can be attributed to the increase in the temperature of March in the second year (20 °C) compared to the first year (16 °C), which caused the average grain filling period from 49.3 days in the first year to reach 45.1 days in the second year. Finally, according to the total measured traits of each line during two crop years and cluster analysis, lines 6, 38, 57, 58, 59, and 73 were selected as the best lines. The yields of these lines were 8350, 8303, 7917, 7537, 8000, and 8130 kg/ha in the first year, and 6933, 6917, 6775, 7045, 7178, and 6815 kg/ha in the second year, respectively. The average yields of Aran, Hana, and Mehregan controls were 7207, 7148, and 7109 kg/ha in the first year, and 5698, 6208, and 5927 kg/ha in the second year, respectively. The dendrogram drawn using the total of the measured traits placed the 40 studied lines in three different groups, each of which had two subgroups. An important point about the cluster analysis is that the selected top lines (6, 38, 57, 58, 59, and 73) are placed in one group, and only line 61 is added to them. Conclusion: In the pedigree study of the top lines, a common parent named PLATA was found in the pedigree of the four lines, which probably made these lines superior to the other tested lines. According to these results, it is possible to propose and implement the use of this line to improve the wheat breeding program in the hot and dry areas of the south.

Abstract Background Boron (B) is a micronutrient, but excessive levels can cause phytotoxicity, impaired growth, and reduced photosynthesis. B toxicity arises from over-fertilization, high soil B levels, or irrigation with B-rich water. Conversely, silicon (Si) is recognized as an element that mitigates stress and alleviates the toxic effects of certain nutrients. In this study, to evaluate the effect of different concentrations of Si on maize under boron stress conditions, a factorial experiment based on a randomized complete block design was conducted with three replications in a hydroponic system. The experiment utilized a nutrient solution for maize var. Merit that contained three different boron (B) concentrations (0.5, 2, and 4 mg L−1) and three Si concentrations (0, 28, and 56 mg L−1). Results Our findings unveiled that exogenous application of B resulted in a substantial escalation of B concentration in maize leaves. Furthermore, B exposure elicited a significant diminution in fresh and dry plant biomass, chlorophyll index, chlorophyll a (Chl a), chlorophyll b (Chl b), carotenoids, and membrane stability index (MSI). As the B concentration augmented, malondialdehyde (MDA) content and catalase (CAT) enzyme activity exhibited a concomitant increment. Conversely, the supplementation of Si facilitated an amelioration in plant fresh and dry weight, total carbohydrate, and total soluble protein. Moreover, the elevated activity of antioxidant enzymes culminated in a decrement in hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and MDA content. In addition, the combined influence of Si and B had a statistically significant impact on the leaf chlorophyll index, total chlorophyll (a + b) content, Si and B accumulation levels, as well as the enzymatic activities of guaiacol peroxidase (GPX), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and H2O2 levels. These unique findings indicated the detrimental impact of B toxicity on various physiological and biochemical attributes of maize, while highlighting the potential of Si supplementation in mitigating the deleterious effects through modulation of antioxidant machinery and biomolecule synthesis. Conclusions This study highlights the potential of Si supplementation in alleviating the deleterious effects of B toxicity in maize. Increased Si consumption mitigated chlorophyll degradation under B toxicity, but it also caused a significant reduction in the concentrations of essential micronutrients iron (Fe), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn). While Si supplementation shows promise in counteracting B toxicity, the observed decrease in Fe, Cu, and Zn concentrations warrants further investigation to optimize this approach and maintain overall plant nutritional status.

PURPOSE: Early puberty is associated with adverse health outcomes over the life course, and Black and Hispanic girls experience puberty earlier than girls of other racial/ethnic backgrounds. Neighborhood racial and economic privilege may contribute to these disparities by conferring differential exposure to mechanisms (e.g., stress, obesity, endocrine disruptors) underlying early puberty. We examined associations between neighborhood privilege, measured by the Index of Concentration at the Extremes (ICE), and age at pubic hair onset (pubarche) and breast development onset (thelarche) in a large multiethnic cohort. METHODS: A cohort of 46,299 girls born 2005-2011 at Kaiser Permanente Northern California medical facilities were followed until 2021. Pubertal development was assessed routinely by pediatricians using the Sexual Maturity Rating scale. ICE quintiles for race/ethnicity, income, and income + race/ethnicity were calculated using American Community Survey 2010 5-year estimates and linked to census tract at birth. We fit multilevel Weibull regression models accommodating left, right, and interval censoring for all analyses. RESULTS: ICE measures were monotonically associated with pubertal onset, with the strongest associations observed for ICE-race/ethnicity. Adjusting for maternal education, age at delivery, and parity, girls from the least versus most privileged ICE-race/ethnicity quintiles were at increased risk for earlier pubarche (hazard ratio: 1.30, 95% confidence interval: 1.21, 1.38) and thelarche (hazard ratio: 1.45, 95% confidence interval: 1.36, 1.54). These associations remained significant after adjusting for girls race/ethnicity and childhood body mass index. Additionally, adjustment for ICE partially attenuated Black-White and Hispanic-White disparities in pubertal onset. DISCUSSION: Neighborhood privilege may contribute to pubertal timing and related disparities.

Objective(s): MicroRNAs, which are micro-coordinators of gene expression, have been recently investigated as a potential treatment for cancer. The study used computational techniques to identify microRNAs that could target a set of genes simultaneously. Due to their multi-target-directed nature, microRNAs have the potential to impact multiple key pathways and their pathogenic cross-talk. Materials and Methods: We identified microRNAs that target a prostate cancer-associated gene set using integrated bioinformatics analyses and experimental validation. The candidate gene set included genes targeted by clinically approved prostate cancer medications. We used STRING, GO, and KEGG web tools to confirm gene-gene interactions and their clinical significance. Then, we employed integrated predicted and validated bioinformatics approaches to retrieve hsa-miR-124-3p, 16-5p, and 27a-3p as the top three relevant microRNAs. KEGG and DIANA-miRPath showed the related pathways for the candidate genes and microRNAsResults: The Real-time PCR results showed that miR-16-5p simultaneously down-regulated all genes significantly except for PIK3CA/CB in LNCaP; miR-27a-3p simultaneously down-regulated all genes significantly, excluding MET in LNCaP and PIK3CA in PC-3; and miR-124-3p could not down-regulate significantly PIK3CB, MET, and FGFR4 in LNCaP and FGFR4 in PC-3. Finally, we used a cell cycle assay to show significant G0/G1 arrest by transfecting miR-124-3p in LNCaP and miR-16-5p in both cell lines. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that this novel approach may have therapeutic benefits and these predicted microRNAs could effectively target the candidate genes.

Introduction: Parotid pleomorphic adenomas necessitate surgical intervention, with a growing emphasis on preserving salivary function post-surgery due to its critical role in maintaining oral health and overall quality of life. This study aims to evaluate a surgical method meticulously designed to preserve salivary function following partial superficial parotidectomy, utilizing Technetium-99m scintigraphy.Materials and Methods: This single-center prospective cohort study was conducted in Mashhad, Iran, between 2022 and 2023. The study encompassed 40 patients diagnosed with parotid pleomorphic adenomas, ages 20 to 64, undergoing partial superficial parotidectomy. The salivary function was evaluated using Technetium-99m scintigraphy three weeks post-operation.Results: Most participants underwent right parotid surgery (62.5%, n=25) instead of left parotid surgery (37.5%, n=15). The outcomes of the partial superficial parotidectomy indicated no complications during the three-week post-operative period. Abstract Introduction: Investigation of the internal surface roughness of fluid transmission systems pipes is very important in the amount of energy loss. Different concepts and methods have been used to examine surface roughness. Some of these methods are based on roughness measurement devices and equipment in this field. Significant researches are done in surface roughness measuring in steel, copper, plastic, or coated pipes. Methods: In this study, the inner surface roughness of fiberglass pipes, has been evaluated using laboratory methods and roughness measuring devices in several diameters and two different types. Calibration and verification results of the surface roughness tester machine on sandpaper and U-PVC pipe wall surfaces are evaluated. In addition, the effect of roughness parameters and their calculated surface roughness and time using of fiberglass pipe have been investigated. Findings: According to the results, the roughness parameters Rz and Ra in the cut length of 0.8 and 2.5 respectively are suitable parameters to estimate the roughness of the inner surface of the fiberglass tube. Also, the roughness of the inner surface of biaxial tubes is lower than uniaxial tubes. In addition, in comparing the roughness of newly produced and old fiberglass pipes, the surface roughness parameters decrease due to the passage of time and the use in projects. Whereas, the roughness parameters related to the type of pipe have not changed. Conclusion: Based on the results of the Surftest SJ-210 device has best results with accuracy of the roughness height reported for fiberglass pipes is equal to 98.84%. In U-PVC, similar to fiberglass pipe, the average roughness values has been estimated with high accuracy using the Ra with a cutting length of 2.5.

Abstract One of the major problems endangering plant growth and productivity worldwide is salt stress. This study aimed to assess the effects of potassium silicate (K2O3Si) on the physical, biochemical, and morphological characteristics of chicory (Cichorium intybus L.) under various levels of salinity stress. The plants were treated with K2O3Si at concentrations of 0, 1, 2, and 3 mM and cultivated under different salt stress conditions (0, 80, 160, and 240 mM NaCl). The findings revealed that salt stress led to decreased root and shoot dry weights, Fv/Fm ratio, chlorophyll a, b, and total chlorophyll, as well as inulin contents. However, foliar exposure to K2O3Si at all salinity levels resulted in improvements in the measured traits. As salinity levels increased, there was a corresponding increase in the accumulation of sodium ions (Na+) and a sharp reduction in potassium ions (K +) in the shoot. Nonetheless, treatment with K2O3Si caused a decrease in Na + accumulation and an improvement in K+ content under all salinity levels. Carotenoid content increased under 80 mM salinity stress, but decreased with higher salinity levels. Application of K2O3Si at all levels resulted in increased carotenoid content under salinity stress conditions. The content of MDA increased significantly with increasing salinity stress, particularly at 240 mM. However, foliar spraying with K2O3Si significantly decreased MDA content at all salinity levels. Salinity stress up to 160 mM increased the total phenol, flavonoid, and anthocyanin contents, while 240 mM NaCl decreased the biosynthesis of phytochemicals. Additionally, the use of K2O3Si increased the content of total phenol, flavonoid, and anthocyanin at all salt levels. Foliar application of K2O3Si increased the tolerance of chicory plants to salinity stress by reducing MDA and increasing phenolic compounds and potassium content. These results suggest that exogenous K2O3Si can be a practical strategy to improve the growth and yield of chicory plants exposed to saline environments.

Abstract Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is widespread and seriously threatens public health worldwide. This study aimed to investigate AFB1 in imported hazelnut samples in northwest of Iran (Eastern Azerbaijan Province) using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography with a Fluorescent Detector (HPLC-FLD). In all tested samples AFB1 was detected. The mean concentration of AFB1 was 4.20 μg/kg and ranged from 3.145 to 8.13 μg/kg. All samples contained AFB1 levels within the maximum acceptable limit except for one sample. Furthermore, the human health risk assessment of AFB1 from consuming imported hazelnuts by Iranian children and adults was evaluated based on the margin of exposure (MoE) and quantitative liver cancer risk approaches. The MoE mean for children was 2529.76, while for adults, it was 8854.16, indicating a public health concern. The present study found that the risk of developing liver cancer among Iranian children was 0.11100736 per 100,000 people, and in the Iranian adult population was 0.0314496 cancers per 100,000 people. Since environmental conditions potentially affect aflatoxin levels in nuts, countries are advised to monitor aflatoxin contents in imported nuts, especially from countries with a conducive climate for mold growth.

The goal of present work is to examine the efficiency of aminated-chitosan/NiFe2O4 nanoparticles (AmCs/NiFe2O4 NPs) produced for removing Ponceau 4R (P4R) from fruit juice through an adsorption process. The resulting nanoparticles were characterized using various techniques. The modeling of results was done using least squares (LS) and Radial basis function-artificial neural network (RBF-ANN). The optimum removal of P4R (91.43 %) was obtained at the following optimum conditions: pH 4.47, adsorbent dosage 0.047 g/L, contact time approximately 57.78 min, and initial concentration P4R 26.89 mg/L. The highest adsorption capacity (qm) was found to be 208.33 mg g−1. The P4R adsorption mostly followed the Freundlich and pseudo-second-order isotherm kinetic models. Both LS-based models and RBF-ANN provided good predictions for independent variables. The dye elimination efficacy for juice samples were approximately 90.34 %. Therefore, based on the obtained results, it can be claimed that the prepared AmCs/NiFe2O4 NPs can be used to remove P4R.

PURPOSE: Children of mothers with prenatal depression have elevated risk for depression later in life. Pregnant women are hesitant to use antidepressants due to fear of adverse fetal effects. To inform prevention, this study examined associations between maternal prenatal depression and antidepressant use, and adolescent depressive symptoms and suicidality. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Prospective data from 74,695 mother-adolescent dyads from the Kaiser Permanente Northern California integrated healthcare delivery system were used. Three prenatal exposure groups were examined: maternal depression and antidepressants (Med); depression and no antidepressants (No-Med); neither depression nor antidepressants (NDNM). Adolescent depressive symptoms (Patient Health Questionnaire-2 score ≥3) and suicidality were assessed for 12- to 18-year-olds. Associations were analyzed using mixed effects logistic regression, adjusted for confounders. RESULTS: Maternal prenatal depression was associated with higher odds of adolescent depressive symptoms (Med odds ratio [OR]: 1.50, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.23-1.84; No-Med OR: 1.59, CI: 1.34-1.88) and suicidality (Med OR: 2.36, CI: 1.67-3.34; No-Med OR: 1.54, CI: 1.10-2.14) compared to no prenatal depression (NDNM). Adolescents exposed to prenatal depression and antidepressants were not at greater odds of depressive symptoms (Med OR: 0.95, CI: 0.74-1.21) compared to those not exposed to antidepressants (No-Med). However, they showed non-significant but greater odds of suicidality (Med OR: 1.54, CI: 0.99-2.39). CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that maternal prenatal depression is associated with adolescent depressive symptoms and suicidality, and that exposure to antidepressants in utero does not increase risk of depressive symptoms, specifically. While not statistically significant, the increased odds of suicidality among adolescents exposed to antidepressants suggest a possible association; however, further investigation is needed. After replication, the findings of this study may inform shared clinical decision-making when considering options regarding antidepressant use for the treatment of maternal prenatal depression.

In this paper, an optical chemical sensor is proposed to detect some toxic gases such as Methane (CH4), Nitrogen (N2), Nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and Carbon monoxide (CO). This type of chemical sensor consists of graphene ribbons and Kapton materials as sensing elements. Also, exploits electromagnetic properties such as absorption in terms of signal transducing. These kinds of small-scale, flexible architectures and advanced detection techniques are in demand to identify toxic gases as well. To develop the proposed chemical sensor, this study describes the structure in the aspect of an equivalent circuit model (ECM) mathematically, while the full-wave simulation (FEM) is performed as the reference. Acceptable agreement between the ECM and FEM simulations is shown while an interesting tuning capability against external stimulation is obtained. It should be noted that the ECM approach is performed in just a few seconds while the FEM simulation takes more than 3 h to produce results. In addition, the maximum error is around the second absorption peak and is less than 4%.The main contribution of this work is introducing a simple structure to distinguish several toxic gases in the sub-THz gap (0.1–2 THz). Additionally, ample simulations are performed to verify the sensor's reliability. According to the simulation results, the proposed meta-structure can appropriately show different peak frequencies and even different numbers of absorption peaks against different concentrations of toxic gases. Additionally, due to the ultra-thin nature of the graphene and the flexibility of the Kapton, the proposed sensor can be wearable while it is considered non-invasive testing.

Leveraging two types of enhanced delay stages to form an oscillation loop, results in a highly reliable CMOS ring oscillator versus external interventions. The idea is investigated via symbolic delay calculations and the HSPICE circuit simulator while 0.18 μm CMOS is exploited. Based on two described inverters, three-ring oscillators are presented. The two ones use only one type of delay stage while the third is combined using two basic inverters and a single current-starved inverter. The basic type inverter is the fastest while is sensitive to power supply and temperature variations. On the other hand, the sensitivity of the current starved inverter is acceptable but this delay stage shows a large delay time, reducing oscillation frequency. This work tries to address this tradeoff between speed and sensitivity by proposing an oscillation loop. The delay times analysis and simulation results verify the robust performance of the proposed oscillator.

A new geometrical vision for a graphene-based THz wave absorber is investigated in this work. A high-performance THz absorber is proposed to exploit complementary conventional periodic arrays of graphene disks. The equivalent circuit model is modified to take account of the complement pattern. The absorber works in two different operational modes based on chemical potential values. One mode shows absorption around 1 THz while the other one expresses perfect absorption at 6 THz and 9 THz. Such a considerable shifting ability via gate stimulations makes the proposed absorber an ideal block for reconfigurable metasurface. The comparison between the circuit model and full-wave simulation verifies an excellent match while ample sensitivity analysis are reported to show the reliability of the proposed switchable THz absorber.
