BiVO 4 has garnered substantial interest as a promising photoanode material for photoelectrochemical water-splitting due to its narrow band gap and appropriate band edge positions for water oxidation. Nevertheless, its practical use has been impeded by poor charge transport and sluggish water oxidation kinetics. Here, a hybrid composite photoanode is fabricated by uniformly embedding SnS 2 nanoparticles near the surface of a BiVO 4 thin film, creating a type II heterostructure with strong interactions between the nanoparticles and the film for efficient charge separation. This structure forms via eutectic melting during atomic layer deposition of SnS 2 with subsequent phase separation between SnS 2 and BiVO 4 at room temperature, offering greater advantages and flexibilities over conventional exsolution techniques. Furthermore, the SnS 2 /BiVO 4 hybrid composite is coated with a thin amorphous ZnS passivation layer to accelerate charge transfer process and enhance long-term stability. The optimized BiVO 4 /SnS 2 /ZnS photoanode exhibits a photocurrent density of 5.44 mA cm -2 at 1.23 V versus RHE, which is 2.73 times higher than that of the BiVO 4 photoanode, and a dramatic improvement in photostability retention at 1.23 V versus RHE, increasing from 55% to 91% over 24 hours. Exsolution generates metal nanoparticles anchored within crystalline oxide supports, ensuring efficient exposure, uniform dispersion, and strong nanoparticle-perovskite interactions. Increased doping level in the perovskite is essential for further enhancing performance in renewable energy applications; however, this is constrained by limited surface exsolution, structural instability, and sluggish charge transfer. Here, hybrid composites are fabricated by vacuum-annealing a solution containing SrTiO 3 photoanode and Co cocatalyst precursors for photoelectrochemical water-splitting. In situ transmission electron microscopy identifies uniform, high-density Co particles exsolving from amorphous SrTiO 3 films, followed by film-crystallization at elevated temperatures. This unique process extracts entire Co dopants with complete structural stability, even at Co doping levels exceeding 30%, and upon air exposure, the Co particles embedded in the film oxidize to CoO, forming a Schottky junction at the interface. These conditions maximize photoelectrochemical activity and stability, surpassing those achieved by Co post-deposition and Co exsolution from crystalline oxides. Theoretical calculations demonstrate in the amorphous state, dopant─O bonds become weaker while Ti─O bonds remain strong, promoting selective exsolution. As expected from the calculations, nearly all of the 30% Fe dopants exsolve from SrTiO 3 in an H 2 environment, despite the strong Fe─O bond's low exsolution tendency. Introduction The Chiari osteotomy enlarges the acetabulum to increase coverage of the femoral head. It is performed as a salvage procedure on a noncongruent, yet in-place, hip. This study aims to assess the clinical and radiographic outcomes of Chiari pelvic osteotomy for treating hip dysplasia in children. Methods This is a case series conducted in the pediatric orthopedic trauma department of the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Hassan II, Fez, Morocco, over a 10-year period from January 2011 to December 2020. The study included patients who were being treated for hip dysplasia and had undergone a Chiari osteotomy. Two types of assessments were used to evaluate global hip function: a clinical assessment using the Merle d'Aubigné and Postel score, and a radiological assessment involving measurements taken from frontal pelvic radiographs. Results A total of 12 Chiari osteotomies were performed in nine patients. The mean age at surgery was 10.8 ± 1.7 years and the mean follow-up was 4.6 ± 2.78 years. The clinical assessment score improved statistically during the last follow-up compared with the preoperative measurements for pain (p< 0.001), mobility (p = 0.002), walking (p<0.001), and total score (p< 0.001), for which 3.8 ± 1.9 points could be gained. Surgically, the osteotomy line height was 5.4 ± 2.6 mm, the osteotomy angle was 12.5 ± 2.2°, and the translated distance was 18.5 ± 3.2 mm. Regarding radiological evaluation, the comparison of angle measurements between preoperative and final recoil was statistically significant for both the vertical center edge (VCE) angle (p<0.001) with a mean gain of 16.33 ± 4.79° and the high transverse edge (HTE) angle (p = 0.002) with a mean loss of 12.67 ± 10.88°. Conclusion Chiari pelvic osteotomy is a complex procedure that requires very precise techniques. Objective The objective of this study was to perform a cross-cultural validation and adaptation of the Moroccan Dialectal Arabic version of the Knee Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS)-Child scale. Methodology Two groups of participants were recruited: a group of children affected by knee problems and another group serving as a control, free of any knee pathology. Participants were asked to complete the KOOS-Child scale twice with a minimum interval of 15 days. Results This study included 130 patients aged 9.82 ± 3.16 years, comprising 88 (67.7%) patients with knee problems and 42 (32.3%) controls. The baseline comparison showed no statistically significant difference between the two groups. The KOOS-Child scale was translated into Moroccan Dialectal Arabic without encountering difficulties in the translation and cross-cultural adaptation process. It proved practical, reliable, and suitable for assessing problems that children and adolescents with knee disorders may encounter. The scale exhibited good content validity and test-retest reliability. The Moroccan scale also demonstrated excellent internal consistency, except for the symptoms subscale. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated that the structure of the Moroccan version of the KOOS-Child scale was acceptable. Elements accumulation in crayfish is proportional to the increase in bioavailability (direct contact) with the surrounding water, sediment, and feeding. Five heavy metals (Cu, Cr, Mn, Ni, and Ag) and lithium (Li) were analyzed in the sediment, water, and crayfish tissues. Elements (heavy metals and lithium) concentrations in sediment, water, and crayfish tissues showed significant differences between the two sampling stations (El-Qanatir and El-Rahawi drain). However, the levels of elements in crayfish tissues were arranged in declining order as hepatopancreas > gills > exoskeleton > muscles for Cu and Cr; hepatopancreas > exoskeleton > gills > muscles for Ni and Ag; and exoskeleton > gills > hepatopancreas > muscles for Li and Mn. The human health hazard evaluation of heavy metals and lithium exposure via edible tissue consumption was assessed for both children and adult consumers. The target hazard quotient THQ values of crayfish edible tissues (less than 1) will not impose any health implications for consumers who ingest edible tissues in sufficient quantities. Furthermore, the hazard index (HI) values reported for children and adult consumers were lower than one, indicating non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic hazards, suggesting that crayfish edible tissues are safe for human ingestion. Background The Pedi International Knee Documentation Committee (Pedi-IKDC) is a questionnaire for the evaluation of knee function in children and adolescents with knee disorders. It has been translated and validated into many languages. The aim of this study was to translate this questionnaire into Moroccan Arabic and evaluate its psychometric properties in a pediatric population. Methods The original English version of the questionnaire was translated into Moroccan Arabic according to international guidelines. The Arabic version was administered twice to two groups: a group of children with knee disorders and a control group, and the following properties were calculated: reliability, internal consistency, and discriminant validity. The reliability was assessed using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), standard error of measurement (SEM), and smallest detectable change. Internal consistency was evaluated using Cronbach's alpha. Results A total of 88 cases and 33 controls, aged between 6 and 16 years old, completed the questionnaire. The Pedi-IKDC showed adequate test-retest reliability (interclass correlation coefficient (ICC =0.89), standard error of measurement (SEM= 5.45), smallest detectable change (SDC=15.11), and appropriate internal consistency (Cronbach alpha= 0.7). The Pedi-IKDC was also able to distinguish between patients and controls (P<0.0001). Background: Retinoblastoma (RB) is the most common primary intraocular malignant tumor in children. RB is mostly caused by biallelic mutations in RB1 and occurs in hereditary and non-hereditary forms according to the "two-hit" theory. RB1 mutations comprise point mutations, indels, large deletions, and duplications. Genetic testing is essential for the comprehensive treatment and management of patients with RB., Aim: The aim was to evaluate RB1 copy number variations (CNVs) using MLPA versus FISH assays in group of Egyptian patients with RB., Results: 16.67% showed an RB1 deletion, abnormal methylation status, or both., Conclusion: Our results suggested MLPA is a fast, reliable, and powerful method and should be used as a first-line screening tool for detecting RB1 CNVs in patients with RB. Moreover, MLPA is advantageous as it evaluates the methylation status/inactivation of RB1, not possible by FISH.

Background: Domestic accident (DA) is any harmful accidental event that occurs suddenly in the home or its immediate surroundings. Our study aims to describe the impact of the COVID-19 lockdown in the epidemiological and clinical profiles of DAs in children and their management., Materials and Methods: This was a mixed descriptive study, comparing DAs occurring during the COVID-19 lockdown and the same period of the previous year. We exhaustively included all children aged from 0 to 15 years admitted for DAs., Results: The incidence of DAs remains above 50% in both groups. The average age was 7 years and boys were more affected. Before the COVID-19 lockdown, the most common mechanism encountered was accidents on the public highway 20.75%, while during the lockdown, it was represented by falls from a high place with a height of 2 m or more. During the lockdown, 33.86% of patients consulted after more than 24 h of the trauma. Supracondylar fractures and burns remained the most frequent. In all cases, the cumulative frequency of fractures decreased during the lockdown. The COVID-19 lockdown had no impact on patient's management., Conclusion: The COVID-19 lockdown has negatively increased the consultation delay. Objective: We aimed to estimate the prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus producing Panton-Valentine leucocidin (PVL) isolated from children diagnosed with osteoarticular infections (OAIs), and to examine risk factors and clinical features., Methods: This prospective study was conducted from January 2017 to December 2018. All hospitalised children diagnosed with S. aureus OAI are included. Blood cultures, articular fluids, synovial tissues and/or bone fragments were collected for bacteriological culture. Antimicrobial susceptibility tests were determined by disk diffusion method. Genes encoding methicillin resistance (mecA) and PVL virulence factors (luk-S-PV and luk-F-PV) were detected by multiplex polymerase chain reaction. The demographic, clinical, laboratory, radiographic and clinical features were reviewed prospectively from medical records., Results: A total of 37 children with S. aureus OAIs were included, 46% of them have PVL-positive infection and 70.6% were male. The mean age was 8.12 years (±4.57), and almost were from rural settings (76.5%). Children with Staphylococcus aureus producing Panton-Valentine leucocidin (SA-PVL) were significantly associated with type of infection (P = 0.005), location of infection (P = 0.037) and abnormal X-ray (P = 0.029). All strains SA-PVL+ are sensitive to methicillin, but one strain SA-PVL negative was methicillin-resistant S. aureus, confirmed by gene mecA positive., Conclusion: The prevalence of S. aureus infections producing PVL toxin was high in OAIs amongst Moroccan children, mainly due to methicillin-susceptible S. aureus. Type and location of infections and abnormal X-ray were significantly associated with SA-PVL. Routine diagnostic testing of PVL-SA, continuous epidemiological surveillance and multidisciplinary management of OAI is essential to prevent serious complications., Competing Interests: None

Newcastle disease (ND), caused by avian orthoavulavirus type-1 (NDV), is endemic in poultry in many regions of the world and causes continuing outbreaks in poultry populations. In the Middle East, genotype XXI, used to be present in poultry in Egypt but has been replaced by genotype VII. We investigated whether virus evolution contributed to superseding and focussed on the antigenic sites within the hemagglutinin-neuraminidase (HN) spike protein. Full-length sequences of an NDV genotype VII isolate currently circulating in Egypt was compared to a genotype XXI isolate that was present as co-infection with vaccine-type viruses (II) in a historical virus isolated in 2011. Amino acid differences in the HN glycoprotein for both XXI and VII viruses amounted to 11.7% and 11.9%, respectively, compared to the La Sota vaccine type. However, mutations within the globular head (aa 126-570), bearing relevant antigenic sites, were underrepresented (a divergence of 8.8% and 8.1% compared to 22.4% and 25.6% within the protein domains encompassing cytoplasmic tail, transmembrane part and stalk regions (aa 1-125) for genotypes XXI and VII, respectively). Nevertheless, reaction patterns of HN-specific monoclonal antibodies inhibiting receptor binding revealed differences between vaccine-type viruses and genotype XXI and VII viruses for epitopes located in the head domain. Accordingly, compared to Egyptian vaccine-type isolates and the La Sota vaccine reference strain, single aa substitutions in 6 of 10 described neutralizing epitopes of HN were found. However, the same alterations in neutralization sensitive epitopes were present in old genotype XXI as well as in newly emerged genotype VII isolates. In addition, isolates were indistinguishable by polyclonal chicken sera raised against different genotypes including vaccine viruses. Objectives: We aim to describe the management of fingertip injuries treated by flaps in the paediatric surgery emergency ward and evaluate the long-term results., Patients and Methods: Through a 2-year prospective study, we analysed all fingertip injuries treated by flaps in the paediatric emergency ward. We collected patients' data and the clinical and imaging characteristics of the lesions. The type of flap was chosen on a case-by-case basis. We evaluated aesthetic and functional results., Results: Forty-two fingertip injuries required the use of flaps. The average age was 7 years, and boys were more affected. The smashed fingertip was the most common mechanism; pulp lesions and amputation were located mainly in zone I or II. We performed Atasoy flaps, palm flap, free skin grafts, McGregor flap and the cross finger flap. Our results were good to excellent in 66.67%., Conclusions: The best management of fingertip injuries in children remains prevention., Competing Interests: None

Introduction: No consensus exists about the open reduction of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH; age of surgery and the need for additional bone surgery). We report clinical and radiological outcomes of a large monocentric study. The objectives are to analyze outcomes and to give recommendations., Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective review of 414 hips (301 patients) operated on for DDH between 2010 and 2018. The mean age at the time of surgery was 34.6 months (14-96 months). In all, 72 hips had open reduction (OR) alone, 130 had OR with femoral osteotomy, 37 had OR with pelvic osteotomy, and 175 hips OR was associated with femoral and pelvic osteotomy. The mean follow-up was 6.5 years (3-10 years). Clinical outcomes were evaluated according to Mckay's classification. The acetabular index was measured, and Severin classification was used for radiological outcomes. Reduction failure and residual dysplasia were noted, and avascular necrosis of femoral head (AVN) was assessed according to Kalamchi and MacEwen classification., Results: At the last follow-up, 331 hips (80.2%) had good clinical results, and 319 (77%) had satisfactory radiological results. The AI measured on the last follow-up radiograph was ≤25° in 350 hips. AVN was noted in 83 hips (20%). Redislocation was founded in 53 hips (12%). Overall: 293 hips (72%) had stable reduction without AVN with good clinical and radiological outcomes., Discussion: Clinical outcomes are better and the risk of AVN decreases significantly when a femoral osteotomy is performed. There were better radiological results when pelvic osteotomy was performed. The rate of residual dysplasia was higher when pelvic osteotomy was not performed. We recommend a femoral shortening osteotomy for high dislocations (Tönnis 3 or 4) for children over 18 months and a pelvic osteotomy for children over 36 months or over 18 months with an acetabular index > 25°., (© The Authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2022.)

This work aimed to evaluate the microstructural, physicochemical and sensorial properties of buffalo meat patties produced using different mixing equipment (bowl cutter, universal mixer, and meat mixer). Scanning electron microscopy revealed a more homogenize emulsion, cohesive structure and smaller pore size of patties produced using the bowl cutter, which significantly reduced the total fluid release, water release, fat release and cooking loss as compared to the universal mixer and meat mixer. Production of the buffalo meat patties using bowl cutter also improved the moisture retention and gel strength of the patties. The patties produced using bowl cutter had the significantly highest lightness and yellowness values, while the redness was the lowest. Lower hardness, gumminess and chewiness also were observed from the patties produced using bowl cutter. Quality of the microstructural and physicochemical properties of the patties produced using different equipment can be organized as bowl cutter > universal mixer > meat mixer. Nevertheless, the sensory evaluation demonstrated a higher preference on aroma, flavour and overall acceptability of patties produced using meat mixer due to coarser and meaty texture, while the colour, tenderness, juiciness and springiness did not differ against using bowl cutter and universal mixer., (© Association of Food Scientists & Technologists (India) 2021.)

Purpose: We conducted this study to explore the hypothesis that the addition of ketamine to levobupivacaine in ultrasound-guided Transversus Abdominis Plane (TAP) block would result in a better and prolonged duration of postoperative analgesia for patients undergoing abdominoplasty. Material and Methods . This randomized prospective study was conducted on 50 patients who were scheduled for abdominoplasty. TAP block was performed bilaterally for all patients either with levobupivacaine 0.5% 15 ml plus ketamine 0.5 mg/kg in a total volume of 20 ml in the LK group ( n  = 25) or with levobupivacaine 0.5% 15 ml plus 5 ml normal saline in a total volume of 20 ml in the L group on each side., Results: Visual analogue scale (VAS) was significantly lower in the LK group in resting condition at 6, 12, and 16 h postoperatively compared to the L group. On movement, the VAS was significantly lower at 4, 6, 8, 12, 16, and 24 h postoperatively in the LK group compared to the L group. The time for first rescue analgesia was longer in the LK group (18.7 ± 4.8 h) than that in the L group (6.5 ± 2.4 h) with the reduced total amount of rescue morphine in the LK group (1.14 ± 2.2 mg) versus the L group (5.86 ± 3.6 mg). Only six patients in the LK group requested rescue morphine, whereas nineteen patients requested rescue morphine in the L group., Conclusions: In TAP block, adding ketamine 0.5 mg/kg enhanced the analgesic efficacy of levobupivacaine 0.5% in patients undergoing abdominoplasty and reduced the required analgesics postoperatively., Competing Interests: The authors declare that there are no conflicts of interest., (Copyright © 2021 Radwa F. Background: The progress of diagnostic strategies and molecular methods improved the detection of Kingella kingae in bone and joint infections, and now, Kingella kingae is being increasingly recognized as the most frequent cause of bone and joint infection BJI in early childhood. The main objective of this prospective study is to report the frequency of Kingella Kingae in negative culture bone and joint pediatric infections, and to describe the clinical and biologic features of these children., Methods: From December 2016 to June 2019, we selected all hospitalized patients with suspected BJI. When culture was negative on the fifth day, children under 10 years were subsequently included in the study, and PCR assay was performed systematically for researching K. kingae specific gene cpn60. Microbial culture and identification were made using standard bacteriological methods. The demographics, clinical, laboratory, radiographic and clinical features were reviewed from medical records., Results: We enrolled 65 children with culture negative BJI, 46 of them having under 10 years old have been screened for the cpn60 gene. Thus, the gene encoding Kingella kingae was positive for 27 BJI cases (58.7%). The mean age of children was 3.02 years, 55.6% were aged 6 months-4 years and 29.6% of them were aged 5-10 years. The male to female ratio was 1.7 and 16 cases (59.26%) occurred during the fall-winter period. The most frequent BJI type was septic arthritis (77.8%) and the most affected sites were knee (51.9%) and hip (37.0%). We recorded a mild clinical picture with normal to mildly raised inflammatory markers. All patients had good clinical and functional outcomes, with no serious orthopedic sequelae.., Conclusion: K kingae is an important pathogen of culture-negative BJI in Moroccan children. PCR testing should be performed in culture-negative cases of children not only in the typical age range of 6 months to 4 years. The crystallographic orientation control of GaN nanowires (NWs) has been widely investigated by varying the V-III ratio. Here, we report the tuning of crystallographic orientation of GaN NWs by varying the composition of indium (In) in gallium-gold (Ga-Au) alloy catalyst using metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). The c-plane GaN thin film and sapphire substrate are used as growth templates. We found that the substrates of same orientation have a negligible influence on the orientation of the GaN NWs. The catalyst composition and the dimensions of alloy droplets determine the morphology of the NWs. The density of the NWs was controlled by tuning the droplet size of the alloy catalysts. Beryllium oxide (BeO) belongs to a very unique material family that exhibits the divergent properties of high thermal conductivity and high electrical resistivity. BeO has the same crystal structure as GaN, and the absolute difference in the lattice constants is less than 17%. Here, the growth of GaN nanowires (NWs) on the polycrystalline BeO substrate is reported for the first time. The NWs are grown by a vapor-liquid-solid approach using a showerhead-based metal-organic chemical vapor deposition. The growth direction of NWs is along the m -axis on all planes of the substrate, and it is confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) patterns. The vertical and tilted growth of NWs is due to the different planes of the substrate such as the m -plane, a -plane, and semipolar planes and is confirmed by X-ray diffraction. Subsequently, the GaN shell and InGaN/GaN multiple quantum wells (MQWs) are coaxially grown using a vapor-solid approach in the same reactor. A very high crystal quality is verified by TEM and SAED and is also confirmed by measuring the photoluminescence. The optical emission is tuned for the entire visible spectrum by increasing the indium incorporation in InGaN quantum wells. The conformal growth of InGaN/GaN MQW shells and the defect-free nature of the structure are confirmed from spatially resolved cathodoluminescence. For many decades, scientists were unable to expose the invisible existence of the parasites in their living hosts, except by scarification and then dissection of the animal model. This process just demonstrates a dead parasite in a dead host. Using this approach, very limited information can be obtained concerning the dynamics of infection and the pathways utilized by the parasite to survive within a hostile host's environment. Introduction of ultra-high-speed imaging techniques, with a time domain of barely few microseconds or even less, has revolutionized the " in vivo dissection" of the parasites. Such methods provide platforms for imaging host-parasite interactions at diverse scales, down to the molecular level. These have complementary advantages and relative assets in investigating host-parasite interactions. Therefore, better elucidation of such interaction may require the usage of more than one approach. Precise in vivo quantification, of the parasite load within the host, and better insight into the kinetics of infection are the two main advantages of the novel imaging procedures. However, imaging parasite-host interplay is still a challenging approach due to many constraints related to the parasite biology, the tissue environment within which the parasites exist, and the logistic technical limitations. We have demonstrated for the first time the hybrid development of next-generation 3-D hierarchical GaN/InGaN multiple-quantum-well nanowires on a patterned Si nanowire-template. The patterned Si nanowire-template is fabricated using metal-assisted chemical-etching, and the conformal growth of the GaN/InGaN multiple-quantum-well (MQW) coaxial nanowires is conducted using metal-organic-chemical-vapor-deposition by the two-step growth approach of vapor-liquid-solid for the GaN core and vapor-solid for the GaN/InGaN MQW shells. The growth directions of the GaN nanowires are confirmed by transmission electron microscopy and selected area electron diffraction patterns. The emission of the GaN/InGaN MQW nanowire is tuned from 440 nm to 505 nm by increasing the InGaN quantum-well thickness. The carrier dynamics were evaluated by performing temperature-dependent time-resolved photoluminescence measurement, and the radiative lifetime of photogenerated electron-hole pairs was found to range from 30 to 35 ps. A very high IQE of 56% was measured due to the suppressed quantum-confined Stark effect which was enabled by the semi-polar growth facet of the GaN/InGaN MQWs. Enhanced stability of a piezoelectric nanogenerator (PNG) was demonstrated using c- and m-axis GaN/V 2 O 5 core-shell nanowires (NWs) by analyzing the capacitive coupling of the PNG's output. The NW array grown on GaN thin film was embedded in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix, following which the matrix was transferred to an indium (In)-coated PET substrate for achieving superior flexibility of the PNG. The stability of the PNG was enhanced by holding the NW PDMS composite with a PDMS polymer as a bonding material on the PET substrate. The inserted PDMS layer improved the lifetime of the PNG, however, because of the insulating nature of PDMS, the piezoelectric output of GaN NWs was coupled capacitively to In contact on PET substrate and it resulted in a slight degradation of piezoelectric output due to the voltage drop across the bottom capacitive contact. The maximum piezoelectric current was 64 nA and output voltage was 11.9 V from the PNG with c-axis NWs. While the PNG with direct bottom contact exhibited 57% output reduction after 72 000 operation cycles, the PNG with capacitive contact did not show any degradation in stability even after 150 000 cycles.

Solar-driven photoelectrochemical water splitting (PEC-WS) using semiconductor photoelectrodes is considered a promising solution for sustainable, renewable, clean, safe and alternative energy sources such as hydrogen. Here, we report the synthesis and characterization of a novel heterostructure MoS 2 /GaN to be used as a photoanode for PEC-WS. The heterostructure was synthesized by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition of single crystalline GaN onto a c-plane sapphire substrate, followed by the deposition of a visible light responding MoS 2 monolayer (E g  = 1.9 eV) formed by a Mo-sulfurization technique. Our experimental results reveal that MoS 2 /GaN photoanode achieved efficient light harvesting with photocurrent density of 5.2 mA cm -2 at 0 V vs Ag/AgCl, which is 2.6 times higher than pristine GaN. Interestingly, MoS 2 /GaN exhibited a significantly enhanced applied-bias-photon-to-current conversion efficiency of 0.91%, whereas reference GaN yielded an efficiency of 0.32%. The superior PEC performance of the MoS 2 /GaN photoelectrode is mainly related to the enhanced light absorption due to excellent photocatalytic behavior of MoS 2 , which reduces charge transfer resistance between the semiconductor and electrolyte interface, and the improvement of charge separation and transport. This result gives a new perspective on the importance of MoS 2 as a cocatalyst coated onto GaN to synthesize photoelectrodes for efficient solar energy conversion devices.

A core-shell structure, formed in a nanostructured photoanode, is an effective strategy to achieve high solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency. In this study, we present a facile and simple synthesis of a unique vertically aligned ZnO/ZnS core-shell heterostructure nanowires (NWs) on a Si substrate. Well-aligned ZnO NWs were grown on Si (100) substrates on a low-temperature ZnO buffer layer by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition. The ZnO NWs were then coated with various thicknesses of ZnS shell layers using atomic layer deposition. The structural characterizations exhibit the well-developed ZnO/ZnS core-shell NWs heterostructure. The as-prepared ZnO/ZnS core-shell NWs was applied as photoanode for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. This unique ZnO/ZnS core-shell NWs photoanode shows photocurrent density of 1.21 mA cm -2 , which is 8.5 times higher than bare ZnO NWs. The PEC performance and the applied-bias-photon-to-current conversion efficiency of ZnO/ZnS core-shell NWs photoanode are further improved with the optimized ZnS shell. The type-II band alignment of the heterostructure photoanode is the key factor for their excellent PEC performance. Importantly, this type of core-shell NWs heterostructure provides useful insights into novel electrode design and fabrication based on earth abundant materials for low-cost solar fuel generation.

Infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) causes a major disease problem for the poultry industry worldwide. The currently used live-attenuated vaccines have the tendency to mutate and/or recombine with circulating field strains resulting in the emergence of vaccine-derived variant viruses. In order to circumvent these issues, and to develop a vaccine that is more relevant to Egypt and its neighboring countries, a recombinant avirulent Newcastle disease virus (rNDV) strain LaSota was constructed to express the codon-optimized S glycoprotein of the Egyptian IBV variant strain IBV/Ck/EG/CU/4/2014 belonging to GI-23 lineage, that is prevalent in Egypt and in the Middle East. A wild type and two modified versions of the IBV S protein were expressed individually by rNDV. A high level of S protein expression was detected in vitro by Western blot and immunofluorescence analyses. All rNDV-vectored IBV vaccine candidates were genetically stable, slightly attenuated and showed growth patterns comparable to that of parental rLaSota virus. Single-dose vaccination of 1-day-old SPF White Leghorn chicks with the rNDVs expressing IBV S protein provided significant protection against clinical disease after IBV challenge but did not show reduction in tracheal viral shedding. Single-dose vaccination also provided complete protection against virulent NDV challenge. However, prime-boost vaccination using rNDV expressing the wild type IBV S protein provided better protection, after IBV challenge, against clinical signs and significantly reduced tracheal viral shedding. These results indicate that the NDV-vectored IBV vaccines are promising bivalent vaccine candidates to control both infectious bronchitis and Newcastle disease in Egypt.

Background: Thyroid carcinoma is a very rare tumor in the pediatric age group, accounting for only 1.5-3% of childhood carcinomas in the United States and Europe. We aimed to identify the risk of a second malignancy among pediatric thyroid cancer survivors., Methods: The cohort analysis consisted of pediatric cancer patients aged less than 20 years, diagnosed with a primary thyroid cancer, identified by site code ICD-0-3: C739, and reported to the SEER 9 database between 1973 and 2013. They were followed up until December 31, 2013; the end of the study period, or up to death if earlier., Results: Out of 1769 patients diagnosed primarily with thyroid carcinoma, 42 patients had a total of 45 incidences of subsequent malignancies. The mean age of patients at the initial diagnosis of thyroid cancer was 16 years. Females (90.5%) had a significantly higher incidence of second malignancies (SM) than males (9.5%). The overall Standardized Incidence Ratio (SIR) of SM in the study patients was higher than expected (SIR = 1.48). Some specific sites showed significantly higher incidences: the salivary glands (SIR = 33.95), the gum and other parts of the mouth [excluding the lips, tongue, salivary glands and floor of the mouth] (SIR = 24.53)*** and the kidneys (SIR = 5.72). The overall risk of SM in patients who had received radioactive iodine was higher than expected (SIR = 4.41). The cumulative incidence of SM after treatment of thyroid cancer in children increases steadily over 40 years (11.92%)., Conclusions: Race, gender, histological subtypes, and radioactive iodine are potentially significant prognostic factors for the development of SM among pediatric thyroid cancer survivors. Identification of underlying mechanisms that raise the risk of SM is important for both treatment and follow-up strategies.

Introduction: Toxoplasma gondii , a common parasitic infection, has a special affinity to the brain. It has a lifelong existence without an apparent clinical disease. While the etiology of bipolar disorder (BD) remains unclear, epidemiological studies suggest a role for infections. Central nervous system is particularly susceptible to oxidative stress (OS) because of its high metabolic rate and its low levels of antioxidant defenses. OS is a contributor to the initiation and progression of many neurological illnesses. OS injury is a constantly and compelling finding associated with BD and toxoplasmosis., Aim: This cross-sectional study has investigated a possible role of toxoplasma-induced OS in the development of BD., Methods: Healthy controls and BD patients were examined for anti- Toxoplasma immunoglobulin-G (IgG) and two protein (3-nitrotyrosine) and DNA (8-hydroxy-2' deoxyguanosine [8-OHdG]) OS markers., Results: Toxoplasma positivity was higher (40%) among BD patients compared to controls (12%). Significantly higher levels of anti- Toxoplasma IgG were detected in BD patients compared to controls. Nitrotyrosine (796.7 ± 106.28) and especially 8-OHdG (20.31 ± 8.38) were significantly higher among toxo-positive BD compared to toxo-negative BD (675.97 ± 144.19 and 7.44 ± 2.86) and healthy controls (464.02 ± 134.6 and 4.17 ± 1.43)., Conclusion: These findings might indicate a role for Toxoplasma infection in the development of BD, possibly through creating a highly oxidative brain environment., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts of interest.

A piezoelectric nanogenerator (PNG) that is based on c-axis GaN nanowires is fabricated on flexible substrate. In this regard, c-axis GaN nanowires were grown on GaN substrate using the vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) technique by metal organic chemical vapor deposition. Further, Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was coated on nanowire-arrays then PDMS matrix embedded with GaN nanowire-arrays was transferred on Si-rubber substrate. The piezoelectric performance of nanowire-based flexible PNG was measured, while the device was actuated using a cyclic stretching-releasing agitation mechanism that was driven by a linear motor. The piezoelectric output was measured as a function of actuation frequency ranging from 1 Hz to 10 Hz and a linear tendency was observed for piezoelectric output current, while the output voltages remained constant. A maximum of piezoelectric open circuit voltages and short circuit current were measured 15.4 V and 85.6 nA, respectively. In order to evaluate the feasibility of our flexible PNG for real application, a long term stability test was performed for 20,000 cycles and the device performance was degraded by less than 18%. The underlying reason for the high piezoelectric output was attributed to the reduced free carriers inside nanowires due to surface Fermi-level pinning and insulating metal-dielectric-semiconductor interface, respectively; the former reduced the free carrier screening radially while latter reduced longitudinally. The flexibility and the high aspect ratio of GaN nanowire were the responsible factors for higher stability. Such higher piezoelectric output and the novel design make our device more promising for the diverse range of real applications.

The insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1) gene is a member of the group of somatotropin axis genes that play a significant role in cell proliferation and growth of muscles. Here, we searched for polymorphisms in buffalo IGF1 and found two novel single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), G64A and G280A, in the noncoding sequences of exon 1 and exon 4, respectively. Statistical analysis of different genotypes showed that the individuals with GG genotypes had significantly (P<0.05) higher body weight (BW) and average daily gain (ADG) than those with other genotypes at ages of 3-6 months in G64A SNP and 6-9 months in G280A SNP. The combined genotypes of these two SNPs produced three haplotypes, GG/GG, AG/AG, and AA/AA, which were significantly associated (P<0.0001) with BW and ADG at an age from 3 to 12 months. Buffaloes with the homozygous GG/GG haplotype showed higher growth performance than other buffaloes. The two SNPs were correlated with mRNA levels of IGF1 and IGF1 receptor (IGF1R) in semitendinosus muscle as well as with the serum concentration level of IGF1. Also, buffaloes with GG/GG haplotype showed higher mRNA and serum concentration levels. The data revealed that these two SNPs could be valuable genetic markers for selection of Egyptian buffaloes for better performance in the population.

Congenital pseudarthrosis of the clavicle (CPC) is a very rare pathology of which over 200 cases have been reported. Usually discovered during the first months of life, CPC is characterised by a definitive bone defect in the middle third of the clavicle. Generally asymptomatic, the pseudarthrosis of the clavicle can cause aesthetic issues and functional symptoms indicating a surgical repair. Different reconstruction techniques have been reported with various complications. We present a 14-year-old boy diagnosed with CPC and concerned about the cosmetic aspect of a swelling of his right clavicle. We performed a two-stage surgical repair using the induced membrane technique described by Masquelet. A complete bone union has been obtained, and patient is satisfied with the cosmetic appearance. Background: The undescended testis represents one of the most common disorders of childhood. Laparoscopy has been widely used both in the diagnosis and treatment of non-palpable testis. In this study, we investigated and evaluated the usefulness of laparoscopy in the diagnosis and treatment of no palpable testis., Patients and Methods: From January 2003 to January 2008, we used laparoscopy in the management of 64 patients with 75 impalpable testes. Their ages varied from 1 to 15 years (median age = 4.6 years). The site and the size of the testes were localised by abdominopelvic ultrasonography in all 64 children for accurate diagnosis. One stage laparoscopic orchiopexy was performed in 26 testes, staged Fowler-Stephens orchiopexy was underwent in 17 testes, while laparoscopic orchidectomy was done in 5 testes. Follow-up by clinical examination and colour Doppler ultrasound was performed in every patient who underwent orchiopexy., Results: There were 11 patients with bilateral non-palpable testes. The overall diagnostic agreement of ultrasound with laparoscopy was seen in only 16 out of 75 testes (21.3%). The results of diagnostic laparoscopy were varied and showed various pathological. Conditions and positioned of the testes, such as 20 low intra-abdominal testes (26.6%), 17 testes were high intra-abdominal (22.7%), and 18 testes (24%) entered the inguinal canal. Associated inguinal hernia was present in 4 patients. After a mean follow-up period of 26 months (6 months - 5 years), all testes were in the bottom of the scrotum except 3 testes were retracted to the neck of the scrotum and atrophy of the testis occurred in 2 patients (2.7%)., Conclusion: Laparoscopy has proven to be the only diagnostic modality where the findings provide a clear dependable direction for the definitive management of impalpable testes, so it allows an accurate diagnosis and definitive treatment in the same sitting., Competing Interests: None

Avian infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) is highly prevalent in chicken populations and is responsible for severe economic losses to poultry industry worldwide. In this study, we report the complete genome sequences of two IBV field strains, CU/1/2014 and CU/4/2014, isolated from vaccinated chickens in Egypt in 2014. The genome lengths of the strains CU/1/2014 and CU/4/2014 were 27,615 and 27,637 nucleotides, respectively. Both strains have a common genome organization in the order of 5'-UTR-1a-1b-S-3a-3b-E-M-4b-4c-5a-5b-N-6b-UTR-poly(A) tail-3'. Interestingly, strain CU/1/2014 showed a novel 15-nt deletion in the 4b-4c gene junction region. Phylogenetic analysis of the full S1 genes showed that the strains CU/1/2014 and CU/4/2014 belonged to IBV genotypes GI-1 lineage and GI-23 lineage, respectively. The genome of strain CU/1/2014 is closely related to vaccine strain H120 but showed genome-wide point mutations that lead to 27, 14, 11, 1, 1, 2, 2, and 2 amino acid differences between the two strains in 1a, 1b, S, 3a, M, 4b, 4c, and N proteins, respectively, suggesting that strain CU/1/2014 is probably a revertant of the vaccine strain H120 and evolved by accumulation of point mutations. Recombination analysis of strain CU/4/2014 showed evidence for recombination from at least three different IBV strains, namely, the Italian strain 90254/2005 (QX-like strain), 4/91, and H120. These results indicate the continuing evolution of IBV field strains by genetic drift and by genetic recombination leading to outbreaks in the vaccinated chicken populations in Egypt., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier B.V. BiVO 4 is ubiquitously known for its potential use as photoanode for PEC-WS due to its well-suited band structure; nevertheless, it suffers from the major drawback of a slow electron hole separation and transportation. We have demonstrated the one-pot synthesis of BiVO 4 /Ag/rGO hybrid photoanodes on a fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO)-coated glass substrate using a facile and cost-effective hydrothermal method. The structural, morphological, and optical properties were extensively examined, confirming the formation of hybrid heterostructures. Ternary BiVO 4 /Ag/rGO hybrid photoanode electrode showed enhanced PEC performance with photocurrent densities (J ph ) of ~2.25 and 5 mA/cm 2 for the water and sulfate oxidation, respectively. In addition, the BiVO 4 /Ag/rGO hybrid photoanode can convert up to 3.5% of the illuminating light into photocurrent, and exhibits a 0.9% solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency. Similarly, the photocatalytic methylene blue (MB) degradation afforded the highest degradation rate constant value (k = 1.03 × 10 -2  min -1 ) for the BiVO 4 /Ag/rGO hybrid sample. It is noteworthy that the PEC/photocatalytic performance of BiVO 4 /Ag/rGO hybrid architectures is markedly more significant than that of the pristine BiVO 4 sample. The enhanced PEC/photocatalytic performance of the synthesized BiVO 4 /Ag/rGO hybrid sample can be attributed to the combined effects of strong visible light absorption, improved charge separation-transportation and excellent surface properties.
