1. The Association Between Bedtime Procrastination, Sleep Quality, and Problematic Smartphone Use in Adolescents: A Mediation Analysis

Abstract

Background: This study investigated the relationships between smartphone use, bedtime procrastination, and adolescent sleep quality. Specifically, the study investigated whether bedtime procrastination mediates the relationship between problematic smartphone use (PSU) and sleep quality. Methods: A sample of 245 adolescents aged 13-18 participated in the study. The Smartphone Addiction Scale—Short Version, Bedtime Procrastination Scale, and Adolescent Sleep–Wake Scale were used to assess PSU signs, bedtime procrastination, and sleep quality, respectively. In addition, smartphone usage habits were assessed through a purpose-built questionnaire. Results: It was found that 46.9% of the adolescents had PSU signs, they used smartphones for an average of 2.8 hours per day, 90.6% used smartphones in bed, they used smartphones in bed for an average of 4.9 days per week, and the average duration of smartphone use in bed was 2.3 hours per day. Correlation analyses showed that poor sleep quality was positively associated with the duration of smartphone use in bed, number of smartphone activities, PSU signs, and bedtime procrastination. The relationship between PSU and sleep quality is mediated by bedtime procrastination, according to mediation analysis. Conclusion: This study demonstrated the negative efect of smartphone use on sleep quality in adolescents. The results also indicate that bedtime procrastination may play a mediating role between PSU and sleep quality. Thus, interventions such as sleep hygiene targeting bedtime procrastination may improve adolescents’ sleep quality with PSU signs

Abstract

Background and Objective The aim of our study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the ASWS in a Turkish adolescent sample. Methods Two hundred and two Turkish high school students participated in our study. We used exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) for factor structure. McDonald’s ω and Cronbach’s α values were utilized for reliability analyses. We examined convergent validity by calculating correlations between the ASWS and sleep parameters and perceived stress scale scores. Results A 3-factor structure was detected, explaining 66.20% of the total variance with an eigenvalue above 1 in EFA. The 3-factor structure was confirmed with good fit indices in CFA. The scale demonstrated solid internal consistency (α = 0.844, ω = 0.832). We found a significant negative correlation between the ASWS and perceived stress, sleep latency, wakefulness after sleep onset, and ability to sleep after wakefulness at night. Conclusions The Turkish ASWS was found to be a valid and reliable instrument.

Abstract Background Pain perception is important in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) since they are more likely to experience painful events due to increased accident rates. The aim of this study is to contribute to the literature concerning the relationship between ADHD diagnosis, methylphenidate (MPH) therapy, and pain thresholds, since findings regarding the change in pain perception in children with ADHD are scarce and inconsistent. Methods Children aged 8–13 years constituted both the ADHD group (n = 82) and the healthy controls (n = 41). The ADHD group was divided into two subgroups, ADHD without MPH (not treated pharmacologically) and ADHD with MPH (treated pharmacologically for at least three-months). Aim:In this study, we aimed to assess the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of adolescents diagnosed with major depressive disorder (MDD), with and without suicide attempts, as well as to investigate the factors predicting suicide attempts.Materials and Methods:This study included 151 adolescents aged between 12 and 18 years, who were diagnosed with MDD between January 2021 and June 2022. This study has a retrospective design, and data including family sociodemographic characteristics, suicide attempts and characteristics, non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) attempts, history of abuse, comorbid psychiatric disorders, and scores on depression and anxiety scales were extracted from the cases’ polyclinic records. The participants were divided into two groups as those with suicide attempts (n=40) and those without suicide attempts (NSSI n=111), and the sociodemographic and clinical data were compared between the groups. 7. An assessment of dynamic facial emotion recognition and theory of mind in children with ADHD: An eye-tracking study.

Abstract

Deficits in social cognition in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have been associated with difficulties in functioning. Since recognizing emotional facial expressions is essential for developing the perceptual components of the theory of mind (ToM), it is important to assess this relationship in children with ADHD. This study therefore compared the recognition of emotional stimuli and gaze patterns between children with ADHD and healthy children using eye-tracking with dynamic facial images. It also examined the relationship between facial emotion recognition accuracy, gaze patterns, ToM scores, and ADHD symptoms. Children with ADHD aged 8-13 (n = 47) and a control group (n = 38) completed a facial emotion recognition test, ToM tests, and the Conners' Parent Rating Scale. Participants' gaze patterns in response to dynamic facial emotion expressions were recorded using eye-tracking technology. Children with ADHD exhibited significantly lower accuracy in the recognition of the facial expressions of disgust and anger. The percentage fixation in the eye region was also significantly lower for happy, angry, sad, disgusted, and neutral emotions in the children with ADHD compared to the control group. No relationship was determined between the percentage of fixations on facial areas of interests and ADHD symptoms or ToM tests. This study provides evidence that children with ADHD experience deficits in visual attention to emotional cues. In addition, it suggests that facial emotion recognition deficits in children with ADHD represent a separate domain of social cognition that develops independently of ToM skills and core symptoms. Understanding and treating the social difficulties of individuals with ADHD may help improve their social functioning.

Abstract

Background: Theory of mind (ToM), the ability to recognize the mental states and emotions of others, is central to effective social relationships. Measuring higher-order ToM skills in gifted children may be a useful way to identify the tendency to experience difficulties in social behavior. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between intelligence and sex in children using ToM and social behavior measures. Methods: Children aged 10–12 years constituted both the gifted (n = 45) and non-gifted (n = 45) groups. The participants were assessed for prosocial behaviors and peer problems using the subscales of the Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire and in terms of ToM using the Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test-Child Version (RMET-C) and the Faux Pas Recognition Test-Child Version (FPRT-C). Results: ToM test results were higher in gifted children and girls. Peer problems were lower in gifted children. Prosocial behavior was higher in girls. No relationship was determined between ToM tests and peer problems or prosocial behavior in gifted children, but such a relationship was observed in the non-gifted group. Conclusions: This study shows that gifted children with high cognitive skills also possess superior social cognition skills. Advanced ToM skills in gifted children may be important to supporting their social and cognitive development. The differences between boys and girls should be considered in educational interventions applied to children in the social sphere.

9. Continuation of Treatment in Children with ADHD: A Multicenter Turkish Sample Study

Abstract

Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the variables that may affect treatment continuation in children aged 6 to 12 years who were newly diagnosed with ADHD. Methods: A total of 132 children diagnosed with ADHD and their parents participated in the study. Sociodemographic and clinical risk factors affecting continuation of treatment were examined using logistic regression analysis. Results: Multiple model examination revealed that greater age increased the risk of treatment discontinuation 1.824 times (p = 0.003) while a lower total length of paternal education increased the risk of discontinuation (1/0.835) 1.198 times (p = 0.022). Other variables emerging as significant in the univariate model lost that significance in the multiple model. Conclusions: Understanding the variables associated with medication discontinuation in ADHD in different populations and taking these variables into account in the development of health policies, will be useful in improving the long-term devastating effects of the disorder.

Introduction:Epigenetic changes in the pathogenesis of neurodevelopmental disorders, including prenatal and early life exposures, are becoming as appealing as hereditary genes. This study aimed to investigate possible pre-pubertal environmental and developmental risk factors for children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and Specific Learning Disorder (SLD).Methods:The study included 98 children (24 ADHD, 24 SLD, 26 ASD, 20 controls) aged 7-12 years. The diagnostic evaluation was based on the American Psychiatric Association Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders and Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-age Childrenpresent version. Parents completed socio-demographic data form for clinical evaluation, and The Wechsler Children’s Intelligence scale was used to assess cognitive skills.Results:In our study, low parental education level, parental unemployment, low-income, and history of psychiatric disorders in first-degree relatives were associated with SLD risk, prematurity, and early self-regulation difficulties were associated with ASD risk, and history of allergy was associated with ADHD risk.Conclusion:In this study, the presence of many different risk factors that play a possible role in neurodevelopmental disorders suggests that further epigenetic studies are needed.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE Studies show partial improvements in some core symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) in time. However, the predictive factors (e.g. pretreatment IQ, comorbid psychiatric disorders, adaptive, and language skills, etc.) for a better the outcome was not studied with machine learning methods. We aimed to examine the predictors of outcome with machine learning methods, which are novel computational methods including statistical estimation, information theories and mathematical learning automatically discovering useful patterns in large amounts of data. METHOD The study the group comprised 433 children (mean age: 72.3 ± 45.9 months) with ASD diagnosis. The ASD symptoms were assessed by the Autism Behavior Checklist, Aberrant Behavior Checklist, Clinical Global Impression scales at baseline (T0) and 12th (T1), 24th (T2), and 36th (T3) months. We tested the performance of for machine learning algorithms (Naive Bayes, Generalized Linear Model, Logistic Regression, Decision Tree) on our data, including the 254 items in the baseline forms. Patients with ≤2 CGI points in ASD symptoms at in 36 months were accepted as the group who has “better outcome” as the prediction class. RESULTS The significant proportion of the cases showed significant improvement in ASD symptoms (39.7% in T1, 60.7% in T2; 77.8% in T3). Our machine learning model in T3 showed that diagnosis group affected the prognosis. In the autism group, older father and mother age; in PDD-NOS group, MR comorbidity, less birth weight and older age at diagnosis have a worse outcome. In Asperger’s Disorder age at diagnosis, age at first evaluation and developmental cornerstones has affected prognosis. CONCLUSION In accordance with other studies we found early age diagnosis, early start rehabilitation, the severity of ASD symptoms at baseline assessment predicted outcome. Also, we found comorbid psychiatric diagnoses are affecting the outcome of ASD symptoms in clinical observation. The machine learning models reveal several others are more significant (e.g. parental age, birth weight, sociodemographic variables, etc.) in terms of prognostic information and also planning treatment of children with ASD.

Abstract

Theory of mind is a social cognition skills demonstrated its importance in the last forty years with psychiatric clinical trials. Theory of mind is seen as an effective and necessary skill in the social function-ing of human who is a social creature as the ability to recognize the mental states and emotions of others. In the first six years of life, theory of mind has been associated with many fields. Findings related to many neurobiological bases, such as limbic-paralimbic structures, prefrontal cortex, which start with mirror neurons, help this sense of meaning. Areas associated with theory of mind development provide better understanding of theory of mind skills and deficits, the first psychopathology studies have been carried out in children with autism, and the studies about theory of mind skills in the diagnosis of neurodevelopmental disorders are becoming more and more interesting. In this review, theory of mind development, neurobiological basis and related areas will be explained and the relation of theory of mind with psychopathology will be examined.

Abstract

Dikkat Eksikliği Hiperaktivite Bozukluğu (DEHB), çocukluk çağının en sık görülen nöropsikiyatrik bozukluklarındandır. DEHB; dikkat dağınıklığı, dürtüsellik, irritabilite ve hiperaktivite ile karakterize, heterojen, gelişimsel bir bozukluktur. Çalışmalar DEHB tanılı çocuk ve ergenlerin yaklaşık %25-50'sinin uyku problemlerine sahip olduğunu, sağlıklı kontrollere göre anlamlı olarak daha fazla uyku problemleri yaşadıklarını göstermektedir. Sağlıklı çocuklarda yapılan çalışmalar yetersiz uykunun dikkat ve davranışsal sorunlara, dürtüselliğe, sosyal ve akademik işlevsellikte ciddi bozulmalara yol açtığını göstermektedir. Uyku problemlerinin psikiyatrik problemler için artmış risk ile ilişkili olduğu bulunmuştur. DEHB hastalarında uyku sorunlarının tedavisinde hayat boyu uygulanabilir ve kişiselleştirilmiş tedavi stratejilerine ihtiyaç vardır. DEHB'si olan çoğu hasta birincil uyku şikâyetiyle başvurabilir veya uyku güçlüğü olan çoğu hasta da DEHB şikâyetleriyle karşımıza gelebilir. Klinisyenler her iki bozukluğun yönetimine yönelik müdahalelere ihtiyaç duymaktadır. Bu çalışmada DEHB tanılı çocuklarda en sık görülen uyku bozukluklarına odaklanıldı ve popüler bir konu olarak medya kullanımı ve uyku ile ilişkisi de incelendi. DEHB'li çocuklardaki uyku problemlerinin yaygınlığı, klinikle ilişkisi ve tedavi stratejileri ile ilgili en güncel çalışmaların sunulması ve olası bazı araştırma alanlarına ışık tutulması amaçlanmıştır.

19. EVALUATION OF READABILITY AND CONTENT OF TEXTS ON AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER

Abstract

Informative texts on the websites may make positive contributions to patient-physician communication and patients' compliance. The readability and comprehensibility of the information resources on the Internet is as important as the content, accuracy, and reliability. Access to accurate and understandable resources for individuals who want to learn about Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) will play an important role in the management of ASD. In our study, it was aimed toevaluate the contents and readability of information texts presented on Turkish websites about ASD. A total of 400 websites were evaluated in Google search using the keywords "autism, autism spectrum disorder, autistic disorder, pervasive developmental disorder". The average readability level was analyzed using the Ateşman and Bezirci-Yılmaz readability formulas. The text contents were divided into two groups "websites prepared by healthcare professionals" and "websites prepared by non-health professionals" and compared. Forty-three websites were eligible for evaluation. The readability level of the websites is “difficult” according to the Ateşman formula; According to the Bezirci-Yılmaz formula, it was found to be "undergraduate level". The percentage of content of all evaluated websites (n=43) was found to be 65.12±22.71. The content percentage of the websites prepared by health professionals was 81.18±19.32, and the content percentage of websites prepared by non-healthcare professionals was 42.00±3.94 (p=0.001). Access to health information on the Internet has a critical value for individuals with chronic diseases and their families. Early diagnosis of children with ASD and access to early intensive intervention have an important place in the prognosis of the disorder. The readability and comprehensibility of the texts on websites, which are the first source of reference for most families, may contribute to the management.

Abstract

Theory of mind is a social cognition skills demonstrated its importance in the last forty years with psychiatric clinical trials. Theory of mind is seen as an effective and necessary skill in the social function-ing of human who is a social creature as the ability to recognize the mental states and emotions of others. In the first six years of life, theory of mind has been associated with many fields. Findings related to many neurobiological bases, such as limbic-paralimbic structures, prefrontal cortex, which start with mirror neurons, help this sense of meaning. Areas associated with theory of mind development provide better understanding of theory of mind skills and deficits, the first psychopathology studies have been carried out in children with autism, and the studies about theory of mind skills in the diagnosis of neurodevelopmental disorders are becoming more and more interesting. In this review, theory of mind development, neurobiological basis and related areas will be explained and the relation of theory of mind with psychopathology will be examined., Zihin kuramı son kırk yılda yapılan klinikçalışmalarla psikiyatrideki önemi ortaya konulan bir sosyal biliş becerisidir.Zihin kuramı becerisi başkalarının zihinsel durumlarını ve duygularını farkedebilme yeteneği olarak sosyal bir canlı olan insanın sosyal işlevselliğindeetkili ve gerekli bir beceri olarak görülmektedir. Hayatın özellikle ilk altıyılında pek çok ilişkili alanla birlikte temeli atılan bu becerinin, aynanöronlarla başlayan ve limbik paralimbik yapılar, prefrontal korteks gibi pekçok nörobiyolojik temelle ilgili bulguları bu beceriyi anlamamıza yardımcıolmaktadır. Zihin kuramı gelişimi ile ilişkili alanlar zihin kuramı beceri vebozulmalarını daha iyi anlamamızı sağlamaktadır. İlk psikopatoloji çalışmalarıotizmli çocuklarda yapılmakla birlikte nörogelişimsel bozukluklar tanıkümesinde zihin kuramı becerileri ile ilgili çalışmalar giderek ilgi çekiciolmaktadır. Bu derlemede zihin kuramı gelişimi, nörobiyolojik temeli veilişkili olduğu alanlar anlatılacak ve zihin kuramının psikopatoloji ileilişkisi incelenecektir.

Sahin, Berkan/0000-0003-4699-3418 WOS: 000453813200007 PubMed: 30518170 Objective One of the areas of social cognition is Theory of Mind (ToM) is defined as the capacity to interpret, infer and explain mental states underlying the behavior of others. When social cognition studies on neurodevelopmental disorders are examined, it can he seen that this skill has not been studied sufficiently in children with Specific Learning Disorder (SLD). Methods In this study, social cognition skills in children diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), SLD or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) evaluated before puberty and compared with controls. To evaluate the ToM skills, the first and second-order false belief tasks, the Hinting Task, the Faux Pas Test and the Reading the Mind in the Eyes Task were used. Results We found that children with neurodevelopmental disorders as ADHD, ASD, and SLD had ToM deficits independent of intelligence and language development. There was a significant correlation between social cognition deficits and problems experienced in many areas such as social communication and interaction, attention, behavior, and learning. Conclusion Social cognition is an important area of impairment in SLD and there is a strong relationship between clinical symptoms and impaired functionality.

Abstract

Objective: We aimed to determine the predictive factors for psychiatric problem severity and/or clinical approval 10 years after first assessment between ages 1-4 years. Method: The children that were assessed with the CBCL and the BITSEA in their 1-4 years of age were included. The follow-up assessments were made by telephone interviews 10 years later by child psychiatry residents. The primary caregivers responded the follow-up questionnaire items, such as social/academic/behavioral functioning and self-esteem and the items regarding the psychiatric approval, diagnosis, and treatment history. Results: The CBCL-Internalizing scores in toddlerhood were found to be significantly inversely correlated with social and behavioral functioning level and self-esteem scores. The paternal and maternal BITSEA-Competence scores were found to be positively correlated with social and academic functioning. The CBCL Withdrawn/Depressed points at first evaulation were determined to be statistically significantly predictive for psychiatric diagnosis. Conclusion: The study revealed that some measures including CBCL and BITSEA completed in toddlerhood significantly indicate the children under risk of psychiatric morbidity in adolescence. Therefore, we conclude that the widespread use of this assessment measures in toddlers and the referral of the group under risk to the psychiatry units for further investigations could be useful preventive interventions.

In this study, it was aimed to investigate changing cortisol and DHEA-S levels post-eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy and the relationship between treatment response and basal cortisol, and DHEA-S levels before treatment.Method: The study group comprised 40 adolescents (age, 12-18 years) with PTSD. The PTSD symptoms were assessed using the Child Depression Inventory (CDI) and Child Post-traumatic Stress Reaction Index (CPSRI) and the blood cortisol and DHEA-S were measured with the chemiluminescence method before and after treatment. A maximum of six sessions of EMDR therapy were conducted by an EMDR level-1 trained child psychiatry resident. Treatment response was measured by the pre- to post-treatment decrease in self-reported and clinical PTSD severity.Results: Pre- and post-treatment DHEA-S and cortisol levels did not show any statistically significant difference. Pre-treatment CDI scores were negatively correlated with pre-treatment DHEA-S levels (r: -0.39). ROC analysis demonstrated that the DHEA-S/cortisol ratio predicts treatment response at a medium level (AUC: 0.703, p: .030, sensitivity: 0.65, specificity: 0.86).Conclusion: The results of this study suggested that the DHEA-S/cortisol ratio may predict treatment response in adolescents with PTSD receiving EMDR therapy. The biochemical parameter of HPA-axis activity appears to be an important predictor of positive clinical response in adolescent PTSD patients, and could be used in clinical practice to predict PTSD treatment in the future. This study aimed to investigate possible pre-pubertal environmental and developmental risk factors for children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and Specific Learning Disorder (SLD). Methods: The study included 98 children (24 ADHD, 24 SLD, 26 ASD, 20 controls) aged 7-12 years. The diagnostic evaluation was based on the American Psychiatric Association Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders and Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-age Children-present version. Parents completed socio-demographic data form for clinical evaluation, and The Wechsler Children's Intelligence scale was used to assess cognitive skills. Results: In our study, low parental education level, parental unemployment, low-income, and history of psychiatric disorders in first-degree relatives were associated with SLD risk, prematurity, and early self-regulation difficulties were associated with ASD risk, and history of allergy was associated with ADHD risk. Conclusion: In this study, the presence of many different risk factors that play a possible role in neurodevelopmental disorders suggests that further epigenetic studies arc needed.

WOS: 000504845000007 Objective: Neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and monocyte/lymphocyte ratio (MLR) are practical inflammation parameters. In bipolar disorder (BD) and major depressive disorder (MDD), these parameters were reported higher than in healthy controls (HC). We aim to compare NLR, PLR, MLR in HC and patients with MDD and BB-manic episode. Method: Forty-six patients with MDD and 43 patients with BD hospitalized between 2013 and 2017 and 40 HC were included in the study. White blood cell, neutrophil, lymphocyte, platelet, and monocyte numbers were entered retrospectively from complete blood counts made at the time of admission, and NLR, PLR, and MLR were calculated from these. Results: NLR and PLR were revealed higher in MDD than HC. NLR and neutrophil values were higher in BD than HC, and there was a positive correlation between NLR and hospitalization period of patients with BD. Conclusion: Findings of our study supported the inflammation hypothesis for MDD and BD in adolescents. Larger-scale studies are necessary to confirm these findings.

However, the predictive factors (e.g. pretreatment IQ, comorbid psychiatric disorders, adaptive, and language skills, etc.) for a better the outcome was not studied with machine learning methods. We aimed to examine the predictors of outcome with machine learning methods, which are novel computational methods including statistical estimation, information theories and mathematical learning automatically discovering useful patterns in large amounts of data. METHOD The study the group comprised 433 children (mean age: 72.3 +/- 45.9 months) with ASD diagnosis. The ASD symptoms were assessed by the Autism Behavior Checklist, Aberrant Behavior Checklist, Clinical Global Impression scales at baseline (T0) and 12th (T1), 24th (T2), and 36th (T3) months.
