Abstract

The discovery a decade ago that individual molecules can function as magnetizable magnets provided a new, 'bottom-up' approach to nanoscale magnetic materials, and such molecules have since been called single-molecule magnets (SMMs). Each molecule functions as a nanoscale, single-domain magnetic particle that, below its blocking temperature (TB), exhibits the classical macroscale property of a magnet, namely magnetization hysteresis. In addition, they straddle the classical/quantum interface in also displaying quantum tunnelling of magnetization (QTM) and quantum phase interference, the properties of the atomic or microscale. SMMs have a number of potential applications, including very high density information storage, where each bit would be stored as the magnetization orientation of an individual molecule, and as quantum bits for quantum computing, taking advantage of the quantum superposition of states provided by the QTM. To facilitate development of techniques for addressing individual SMMs for such applications, and other reasons, it has been of interest to us to explore whether very large examples (by molecular standards) could be synthesized. In effect, can the molecular (or 'bottom-up') approach reach the size regime of the classical (or 'top-down') approach to nanoscale magnetic materials? Indeed, here we sure that a giant Mn84 SMM can be prepared with a torus structure of 4 nm dimensions, that it displays both magnetization hysteresis and QTM, and that it crystallizes as highly ordered, supramolecular nanotubes., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We present high-frequency high-field electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements on the dodecanuclear manganese complex Mn12-bromoacetate (Mn12-BrAc). The crystal-field parameters are found to be identical to those of the original compound Mn12-acetate (Mn12-Ac). A detailed analysis of the frequency and temperature dependence of anomalous peaks observed in the EPR spectra of Mn12-BrAc enables us to locate the S=9 manifold at about 40 K above the Ms= +/-10 ground state of this nominally S=10 system. This is very close to the Ms = +/-6 state of the S = 10 manifold, thus suggesting pathways for the thermally assisted magnetization dynamics and related properties. Finally, the EPR fine structures recently attributed to disorder associated with the acetic acid of crystallization in Mn12-Ac are absent in the present measurements, thus suggesting that the Mn12-BrAc complex represents a more suitable candidate for measurements of quantum effects in high symmetry S=10 SMMs.

Abstract

The aims of this study were to study the influence of the duration of diabetes, the role of endothelial-derived vasodilators, and the role of phosphodiesterase (PDE) isoform activity in the early changes in vascular reactivity of aortic rings from diabetic rats. Diabetes mellitus was induced in female rats by intravenous streptozotocin (85 mg/kg). Two or 4 wk later, thoracic aortic rings from control and diabetic rats were isolated, and vascular responses to acetylcholine (ACh), S-nitrosoN-acetylpenicillamine (SNAP) [nitric oxide (NO) donor], DMPPO (PDE5 inhibitor), and phenylephrine (PE) were obtained in the presence and absence of endothelium or other drugs. PDE isoform activity was also measured. At 2 wk, responses to ACh and DMPPO were enhanced, whereas those to PE were attenuated in diabetic rats relative to controls. Indomethacin and SQ-29548 (a thromboxane [A.sub.2] receptor antagonist), but not [N.sup.G]-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester, corrected these differences. The responses to SNAP, and cAMP and cGMP hydrolytic activities, were similar in the two groups. In contrast, at 4 Wk, ACh, DMPPO, and PE produced similar responses in the two groups: [N.sup.G]-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester rendered the response to PE lower in the diabetic group, and this was corrected by indomethacin, but not SQ-29548, treatment. The response to SNAP was greater in the diabetic group, and this was corrected by DMPPO. Activity of all PDEs was decreased at 4 wk. We conclude that, at 2 wk, there is modulation of thromboxane [A.sub.2] production, but no change in the NO system or PDE isoform activities. At 4 wk, a reduction in NO activity is superimposed; at this stage, PDE activity is reduced, together with increased production of vasodilating prostaglandins, possibly as a compensatory mechanism to maintain normal vascular reactivity. endothelium; vasodilation; vasoconstriction

Abstract

Background: The incidence of gastric poorly cohesive carcinoma (PCC) is increasing. The prognosis for patients with peritoneal metastases remains poor and the role of cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) is controversial. The aim was to clarify the impact of gastric PCC with peritoneal metastases treated by CRS with or without HIPEC. Methods: All patients with peritoneal metastases from gastric cancer treated with CRS with or without HIPEC, in 19 French centres, between 1989 and 2014, were identified from institutional databases. Clinicopathological characteristics and outcomes were compared between PCC and non-PCC subtypes, and the possible benefit of HIPEC was assessed. Results: In total, 277 patients were included (188 PCC, 89 non-PCC). HIPEC was performed in 180 of 277 patients (65 per cent), including 124 of 188 with PCC (66 per cent). Median overall survival (OS) was 14.7 (95 per cent c.i. 12.7 to 17.3) months in the PCC group versus 21.2 (14.7 to 36.4) months in the non-PCC group (P<0.001). In multivariable analyses, PCC (hazard ratio (HR) 1.51, 95 per cent c.i. 1.01 to 2.25; P=0.044) was associated with poorer OS, as were pN3, Peritoneal Cancer Index (PCI), and resection with a completeness of cytoreduction score of 1, whereas HIPEC was associated with improved OS (HR 0.52; P<0.001). The benefit of CRS-HIPEC over CRS alone was consistent, irrespective of histology, with a median OS of 16.7 versus 11.3 months (HR 0.60, 0.39 to 0.92; P=0.018) in the PCC group, and 34.5 versus 14.3 months (HR 0.43, 0.25 to 0.75; P=0.003) in the non-PCC group. Non-PCC and HIPEC were independently associated with improved recurrence-free survival and fewer peritoneal recurrences. In patients who underwent HIPEC, PCI values of below 7 and less than 13 were predictive of OS in PCC and non-PCC populations respectively. Conclusion: In selected patients, CRS-HIPEC offers acceptable outcomes among those with gastric PCC and long survival for patients without PCC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Extensive spectroscopic evaluation of a novel ONO3– trianionic pincer Fe(ii) complex indicates the rare square-planar geometry and S = 2 spin state are retained in solution., Square-planar high-spin Fe(ii) molecular compounds are rare and the only three non-macrocyclic or sterically-driven examples reported share a common FeO4 core. Using an easily modifiable pincer-type ligand, the successful synthesis of the first compound of this type that breaks the FeO4 motif was achieved. In addition, we present the first evidence that geometry and spin state persist in solution. Extensive characterization includes the first high-field EPR and variable field/temperature Mössbauer spectra for this class of compounds. Analysis of the spectroscopic data indicates this complex exhibits a large and positive zero-field splitting tensor. Furthermore, the unusually small ΔE Q value determined for this compound is rationalized on the basis of DFT calculations.

Abstract

Two Mn70 torus-like molecules have been obtained from the alcoholysis in EtOH and 2-ClC2H4OH of [Mn12O12(O2CMe)16(H2O)4]·4H2O·2MeCO2H (1) in the presence of NBun4MnO4 and an excess of MeCO2H. The reaction in EtOH afforded [Mn70O60(O2CMe)70(OEt)20(EtOH)16(H2O)22] (2), whereas the reaction in ClC2H4OH gave [Mn70O60(O2CMe)70(OC2H4Cl)20(ClC2H4OH)18(H2O)22] (3). The complexes are nearly isostructural, each possessing a Mn70 torus structure consisting of alternating near-linear [Mn3(μ3-O)4] and cubic [Mn4(μ3-O)2(μ3-OR)2] (R = OEt, 2 R = OC2H4Cl, 3) subunits, linked together via syn,syn-μ-bridging MeCO2- and μ3-bridging O2- groups. 2 and 3 have an overall diameter of ∼4 nm and crystallize as highly ordered supramolecular nanotubes. Alternating current (ac) magnetic susceptibility measurements, performed on microcrystalline samples in the 1.8-10 K range and a 3.5 G ac field with oscillation frequencies in the 5-1500 Hz range, revealed frequency-dependent out-of-phase signals below ∼2.4 K for both molecules indicative of the slow magnetization relaxation of single-molecule magnets (SMMs). Single-crystal, magnetization vs field studies on both complexes revealed hysteresis loops below 1.5 K, thus confirming 2 and 3 to be new SMMs. The hysteresis loops do not show the steps that are characteristic of quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM). However, low-temperature studies revealed temperature-independent relaxation rates below ∼0.2 K for both compounds, the signature of ground state QTM. Fitting of relaxation data to the Arrhenius equation gave effective barriers for magnetization reversal (Ueff) of 23 and 18 K for 2 and 3, respectively. Because the Mn70 molecule is close to the classical limit, it was also studied using a method based on the Néel-Brown model of thermally activated magnetization reversal in a classical single-domain magnetic nanoparticle. The field and sweep-rate dependence of the coercive field was investigated and yielded the energy barrier, the spin, the Arrhenius pre-exponential, and the cross-over temperature from the classical to the quantum regime. Abstract

The combined use of the anion of methyl 2-pyridyl ketone oxime (mpko -) and azides (N3-) in non-carboxylate Mn chemistry has afforded two new Mn6 clusters, [Mn6O 3(N3)3(mpko)6(H2O) 3](ClO4J2 (1) and [Mn6O3(N3) 5(mpko)6(H2O)] (2), which are mixed-valence (MnII, 5 MnIII). The 1:1:1:1 reaction of Mn(C1O 4)2·6H2O, mpkoH, NaN3 and NEt3 in MeOH gave the cationic complex 1, while a similar reaction using additional NaO2CMe led instead to the neutral complex 2. The structurally unprecedented cores of the two cages are very similar, and contain the six Mn ions in a topology comprising three vertex-sharing oxide-centered triangles bridged by two end-on azides. Variable-temperature, solidstate dc and ac magnetization studies were carried out for 1 and 2 in the 1.8-300 K range. The data reveal S = 5/2 ground states for both complexes, and fitting of magnetization vs. field (H) and temperature (T) data by matrix diagonalization for 1 gave S = 5/2, D = -1.4(3) cm-1, and g = 1.99(1), where D is the axial zero-field splitting (ZFS) parameter. The combined results demonstrate the versatility of 2-pyridyl ketone oxime anions in the presence of suitable ancillary ligands, such as azides, for the synthesis of new Mn clusters, without requiring the co-presence of carboxylate ligands. © 2010 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Abstract

The syntheses, structures, and magnetic properties are reported of the mixed-metal complexes [Ce4Mn10O10(OMe) 6(O2-CPh)16(NO3)2(MeOH) 2(H2O)2] (1) and [Th6Mn 10O22(OH)2(O2CPh) 16-(NO3)2(H2O)8] (2), which were both prepared by the reaction of (NBun4) [Mn4O2(O2CPh)9(H2O)] (3) with a source of the heterometal in MeCN/MeOH. Complexes 1 and 2 crystallize in the monoclinic space group C2/c and the triclinic space group P1, respectively. Complex 1 consists of 10 MnIII, 2 CeIV, and 2 Ce IV atoms and possesses a very unusual tubular [Ce4Mn 10O10(OMe)6]18+ core. Complex 2 consists of 10 MnIV and 6 ThIV atoms and possesses a [Th6Mn10O22(OH)2]18+ core with the metal atoms arranged in layers with a 2:3:6:3:2 pattern. Peripheral ligation around the cores is provided by 16 bridging benzoates, 2 chelating nitrates, and either (i) 2 each of terminal H2O and MeOH groups in 1 or (ii) 8 terminal H2O groups in 2. Complex 1 is the largest mixed-metal Ce/Mn cluster and the first 3d/4f cluster with mixed-valency in its lanthanide component, while complex 2 is the first Th/Mn cluster and the largest mixed transition metal/actinide cluster to date. Solid-state dc and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements on 1 and 2 establish that they possess S = 4 and 3 ground states, respectively. Ac susceptibility studies on 1 revealed nonzero frequency-dependent out-of-phase (χM″) signals at temperatures below 3 K complex 2 displays no χM″ signals. However, single-crystal magnetization vs dc field scans at variable temperatures and variable sweep-rates down to 0.04 K on 1 revealed no noticeable hysteresis loops, except very minor ones at 0.04 K assignable to weak intermolecular interactions propagated by hydrogen bonds involving CeIII-bound ligands. Complex 1 is thus concluded not to be a single-molecule magnet (SMM), and the combined results thus represent a caveat against taking such ac signals as sufficient proof of a SMM. © 2007 American Chemical Society. 46 8 3105 3115 Cited By :55

Abstract

Background: Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is a rare clinical condition characterized by mucinous ascites, typically related to appendiceal or ovarian tumours. Current standard treatment involves cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC), but recurrences occur in 20–30 per cent of patients. The aim of this study was to define the timing and patterns of recurrence to provide a basis for modifying follow‐up of these patients. Methods: This observational study examined a prospectively developed multicentre national database (RENAPE working group) to identify patients with recurrence after optimal CRS and HIPEC for PMP. Postoperative complications, long‐term outcomes and potential prognostic factors were evaluated. Results: Of 1411 patients with proven PMP, 948 were identified who had undergone curative CRS and HIPEC. Among these patients, 229 first recurrences (24·2 per cent) were identified: 196 (20·7 per cent) occurred within the first 5 years (early recurrence) and 30 (3·2 per cent) occurred between 5 and 10 years. Three patients developed a first recurrence more than 10 years after the original treatment. The mean(s.d.) time to first recurrence was 2·36(2·21) years. Preoperative chemotherapy and high‐grade pathology were significant factors for early recurrence. Overall survival for the entire group was 77·9 and 63·1 per cent at 5 and 10 years respectively. The principal site of recurrence was the peritoneum. Conclusion: Recurrence of PMP was rare after 5 years and exceptional after 10 years. Recurrence of pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) following completeness of cytoreduction (CC)‐0 or CC‐1 and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) may occur in up to 25% of patients. Recurrence rates were 13·3% between 5 and 10 years and 1·6% after 10 years. Abstract

We describe a new synthetic procedure in Mn cluster chemistry involving reductive aggregation of permanganate ( MnO 4 - ) ions in MeOH/benzoic acid solution and the first two products that were obtained from this procedure. The first one is the anion [Mn 12 O 12 (OMe) 2 (O 2 CPh) 16 (H 2 O) 2 ] 2− which was isolated as a black microcrystalline material when the solution was left at room temperature overnight. The microcrystalline material was recrystallized from CH 2 Cl 2 /hexanes and gave the above mentioned anion as a mixture of two crystal forms (N n Bu 4 ) 2 [Mn 12 O 12 (OMe) 2 (O 2 CPh) 16 (H 2 O) 2 ] · 2H 2 O · 4CH 2 Cl 2 and (N n Bu 4 ) 2 [Mn 12 O 12 (OMe) 2 (O 2 CPh) 16 (H 2 O) 2 ] · 2H 2 O · CH 2 Cl 2 . The anion contains a central [ Mn IV 4 ( μ 3 - O ) 2 ( μ - O ) 2 ( μ - OMe ) 2 ] 6 + unit surrounded by a non-planar ring of eight Mn III atoms that are connected to the central Mn 4 unit by eight bridging μ 3 -O 2− ions. This anion is remarkably similar to the well known [Mn 12 O 12 (O 2 CR) 16 (H 2 O) 4 ] complexes (hereafter called “normal [Mn 12 ]”), with the main difference being the structure of the central cores. The second compound was the polymeric [Mn(OMe)(O 2 CPh) 2 ] n that was obtained when the solution was left at room temperature for ∼2 weeks. The compound contains a linear chain of repeating [Mn III (μ-O 2 CPh) 2 (μ-OMe)Mn III ] units. The chains are parallel to each other and are interacting weakly through π-stacking between the benzoate rings of different chains. Variable temperature ac magnetic measurements and hysteresis studies revealed that both anions are SMMs and like normal [Mn 12 ] clusters, display both faster- and slower-relaxing magnetization dynamics that we assign to the presence of JT isomerism. Variable temperature magnetic susceptibility studies establish that the Mn III centers of the polymer are antiferromagnetically coupled resulting in a diamagnetic ground state.

This compound is very similar to the well-known [Mn12O12(O2CR)16(H 2O)4] complexes (hereafter called "normal Mn 12"), with the main difference being the structure of the central cores. Longer reaction times (∼2 weeks) led to isolation of polymeric [Mn(OMe)(O2CPh)2]n (2), which contains a linear chain of repeating [MnIII(μ-O 2CPh)2(μ-OMe)MnIII] units. The chains are parallel to each other and interact weakly through π-stacking between the benzoate rings. When KMnO4 was used instead of NBun 4MnO4, two types of compounds were obtained, [Mn 12O12(O2CPh)16(H2O) 4] (3), a normal Mn12 complex, and [Mn4O 2(O2CPh)8(MeOH)4]·2MeOH (4·2MeOH), a new member of the Mn4 butterfly family. The cyclic voltammogram of 1 exhibits three irreversible processes, two reductions and one oxidation. One-electron reduction of 1 by treatment with 1 equiv of l- in CH2Cl2 gave (NBun 4)[Mn12O12(O2CPh) 16(H2O)3]·6CH2Cl2 (5·6CH2Cl2), a normal Mn12 complex in a one-electron reduced state. The variable-temperature magnetic properties of 1, 2, and 5 were studied by both direct current (dc) and alternating current (ac) magnetic susceptibility measurements. Variable-temperature dc magnetic susceptibility studies revealed that (i) complex 1 possesses an S = 6 ground state, (ii) complex 2 contains antiferromagnetically coupled chains, and (iii) complex 5 is a typical [Mn12]- cluster with an S = 19/2 ground state. Variable-temperature ac susceptibility measurements suggested that 5 and both isomeric forms of 1 (1a,b) are single-molecule magnets (SMMs). This was confirmed by the observation of hysteresis loops in magnetization vs dc field scans. In addition, 1a,b, like normal Mn12 clusters, display both faster and slower relaxing magnetization dynamics that are assigned to the presence of Jahn-Teller isomerism. © 2005 American Chemical Society. 44 18 6324 6338

Abstract

The syntheses of the first mixed-metal CeIVMnIV complexes are reported. [CeMn2O3(O2CMe)(NO3)4(H2O)2(bpy)2](NO3) (1; bpy = 2,2‘-bipyridine) was obtained from the reaction of Mn(NO3)2·xH2O and bpy with (NH4)2Ce(NO3)6 in a 1:1:2 molar ratio in 25% aqueous acetic acid. The complexes [CeMn6O9(O2CR)9(X)(H2O)2]y+ (R = Me, X = NO3-, y = 0 (2); R = Me, X = MeOH, y = +1 (3); R = Et, X = NO3-, y = 0 (7)) were obtained from reactions involving a [Mn(O2CR)2]·4H2O/CeIV ratio of ∼1:1.5 in concentrated aqueous carboxylic acid. Abstract

The preparation and crystal structures of three polymeric Mn compounds are reported. The comproportionation reaction between Mn(OAc)2·4H2O and KMnO4 in MeOH-AcOH (2:3) leads to isolation of {[Mn(OH)(OAc)2]·AcOH·H2O}n (1). The structure consists of chains of [Mn(μ-OH)(μ-OAc)2Mn] triply-bridged units. The chains are linked into 3D networks by hydrogen-bonding interactions involving the AcOH and H2O molecules of crystallization. Oxidation of [Mn12O12(O2CPh)16 (H2O)4] by controlled potential electrolysis in CH2Cl2 with NBu2nPF6 as supporting electrolyte yields a brown solution which slowly turns purple and then pale yellow. Deep purple crystals, obtained by addition of hexanes, were identified crystallographically as {(NBu4n])[Mn2(O2 PF2)6]·2/3CH2 Cl2}n (2), which is mixed-valent and consists of a chain of [MnII(μ-O2PF2)3 MnIII] triply-bridged units. Bond distances, bond valence sum calculations, and a Jahn-Teller (JT) axial elongation at the MnIII sites confirm a trapped-valence situation. Dissolution of Mn(OAc)2·4H2O in EtOH results in a subsequent crystallization of a white solid analyzing as [Mn(OAc)2·3/8H2O] (3a). Crystals grown from MeOH-Et2O were structurally identified as [Mn4(OAc)8(MeOH)2]n (3b), and consist of Y-shaped Mn4 units bridged by AcO- groups to give a 3D network. Variable-temperature, solid-state magnetic susceptibility studies establish that 1, 3a and 3b are antiferromagnetically coupled to give diamagnetic ground states. © 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. Abstract

We report the synthesis, x-ray structure, and magnetic susceptibility of a magnetic compound [Fe[SUB4]O(OH)[SUB5](tacn)[SUB4]]I[SUB7]·2.5 H[SUB2]O (Fe[SUB4]), where tacn=1, 4, 7 triazacyclononane. Fe[SUB4] crystallizes in the monoclinic space group, P2(1)/c, with cell parameters a=18.7604(9) Å, b=12.5840(6) Å, c=24.064(1) Å, α=90°, β=108.783(1)°, and &gamma=90°. Dc susceptibility, χ[SUBdc], experiments show the magnetic moment of Fe[SUB4] saturates at approximately 0.2μ[SUBB] giving a spin ground state of S=0. However, on application of dc fields, a peak develops in χ[SUBdc], which is ascribed to the presence of a low lying excited magnetic state. Interestingly, ac susceptibility experiments show frequency dependence of χ" and thermally activated magnetization switching dynamics, with a potential energy barrier of 26 K.
