The heteroepitaxial growth of 3C-SiC films on on-axis (100), (110), and (111) Si oriented substrates has been investigated. A multistep growth process using low-pressure chemical vapor deposition with trichlorosilane as the silicon precursor was conducted at a growth temperature of 1350 °C. X-ray diffraction analysis (θ-2θ and polar figure) and numerical simulation have been shown to be a suitable method to investigate and understand the SiC film structural properties for each substrate orientation. Epitaxial SiC films with first order twins, at least for growth on (100) and (111) Si, were obtained. SiC growth on (110) Si, on the other hand, showed a change in the growth direction by the observation of first and second order twins from the <110> to <111> direction. This is due to the high growth rate of (110) 3C-SiC/(110) Si heteroepitaxial system which encourages the SiC film to grow in a direction with a higher packing density. It was observed that the 3C-SiC surface morphology and average residual stress depends strongly on the silicon substrate orientation, as confirmed by atomic force microscopy analysis and radius of curvature measurements. We have used grazing incidence X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy (XANES) to investigate the behavior of monolayer FeOx films on Pt(111) under near ambient pressure CO oxidation conditions with a total gas pressure of 1 bar. Spectra indicate reversible changes during oxidation and reduction by O2 and CO at 150ºC, attributed to a transformation between FeO bilayer and FeO2 trilayer phases. The trilayer phase is also reduced upon heating in CO+O2, consistent with a Mars-van-Krevelen type mechanism for CO oxidation. At higher temperatures, the monolayer film dewets the surface, resulting in a loss of the observed reducibility. A similar iron oxide film prepared on Au(111) shows little sign of reduction or oxidation under the same conditions. The results highlight the unique properties of monolayer FeO and the importance of the Pt support in this reaction. We investigated the structural evolution of electrochemically fabricated Pd nanowires in situ by means of grazing-incidence transmission small- and wide-angle x-ray scattering (GTSAXS and GTWAXS), x-ray fluorescence (XRF) and two-dimensional surface optical reflectance (2D-SOR). This shows how electrodeposition and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) compete and interact during Pd electrodepositon. During the bottom-up growth of the nanowires, we show that β -phase Pd hydride is formed. Suspending the electrodeposition then leads to a phase transition from β -phase Pd hydride to α -phase Pd. Additionally, we find that grain coalescence later hinders the incorporation of hydrogen in the Pd unit cell. GTSAXS and 2D-SOR provide complementary information on the volume fraction of the pores occupied by Pd, while XRF was used to monitor the amount of Pd electrodeposited., (Creative Commons Attribution license.)

Purpose: This study aims to determine whether customised peripheral corneal cross-linking (P-CXL) can halt keratoconus progression in ultrathin corneas with stage 3 and 4 keratoconus, with thinnest pachymetry well below 400 μm and therefore excluded from most treatment protocols., Methods: This retrospective study included 21 eyes with progressive keratoconus and thinnest pachymetry ranging from 97 to 399 μm (mean 315 μm), who underwent P-CXL between 2007 and 2020. The procedure involved preoperative NSAIDs therapy, tomography-guided customized epithelial debridement, the use of both hypo-osmolar and iso-osmolar riboflavin solutions, and 9.0 mW/cm 2 UV-A irradiation for 10 minutes. The outcome measures were best spectacle-corrected visual acuity (BSCVA), mean keratometry, maximum keratometry, and thinnest pachymetry., Results: After a minimum follow-up period of 12 months, P-CXL stabilized or improved mean keratometry and maximum keratometry in 85.7% of eyes (Kavg from 57.48 ± 9.38 to 56.43 ± 8.96 D, p < 0.001; Kmax from 72.77 ± 12.74 to 70.00 ± 11.50 D, p < 0.001), BSCVA in 90.5% of eyes (from 4.48 ± 2.85 to 5.72 ± 3.34 decimals, p < 0.001), and thinnest pachymetry in 81% of eyes (from 315.81 ± 90.05 to 342.33 ± 74.22 μm, p = 0.08). No adverse events and no loss of endothelial cell density occurred., Conclusions: Customised peripheral corneal cross-linking (P-CXL) treated very severe keratoconus with a success rate of 85.7% and improved visual acuity and tomographic indicators in most cases. While a longer follow-up and a larger sample would help to support such conclusions to a greater extent, these results allow to broaden the treatment spectrum for patients with stage 3 and 4 keratoconus and contact lens tolerance.

Corrosion is the main factor limiting the lifetime of metallic materials, and a fundamental understanding of the governing mechanism and surface processes is difficult to achieve since the thin oxide films at the metal-liquid interface governing passivity are notoriously challenging to study. In this work, a combination of synchrotron-based techniques and electrochemical methods is used to investigate the passive film breakdown of a Ni-Cr-Mo alloy, which is used in many industrial applications. This alloy is found to be active toward oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and the OER onset coincides with the loss of passivity and severe metal dissolution. The OER mechanism involves the oxidation of Mo 4+ sites in the oxide film to Mo 6+ that can be dissolved, which results in passivity breakdown. This is fundamentally different from typical transpassive breakdown of Cr-containing alloys where Cr 6+ is postulated to be dissolved at high anodic potentials, which is not observed here. At high current densities, OER also leads to acidification of the solution near the surface, further triggering metal dissolution. The OER plays an important role in the mechanism of passivity breakdown of Ni-Cr-Mo alloys due to their catalytic activity, and this effect needs to be considered when studying the corrosion of catalytically active alloys., (© 2023 The Authors. This work introduces the high-energy surface X-ray diffraction analysis toolkit ( HAT ), an open-source cross-platform software package written in Python to allow the extraction and processing of high-energy surface X-ray diffraction (HESXRD) data sets. Thousands of large-area detector images are collected in a single HESXRD scan, corresponding to billions of pixels and hence reciprocal space positions. HAT is an optimized reciprocal space binner that implements a graphical user interface to allow the easy and interactive exploration of HESXRD data sets. Regions of reciprocal space can be selected with movable and resizable masks in multiple views and are projected onto different axes to allow the creation of reciprocal space maps and the extraction of crystal truncation rods. A high-throughput method for the fabrication of ordered arrays of Au nanoparticles is presented. It is based on pulsed electrodeposition into porous anodic alumina templates. In contrast to many synthesis routes, it is cyanide-free, prior separation of the alumina template from the aluminium substrate is not required, and the use of contaminating surfactants/capping agents often found in colloidal synthesis is avoided. The aspect ratio of the nanoparticles can also be tuned by selecting an appropriate electrodeposition time. We show how to fabricate arrays of nanoparticles, both with branched bases and with hemispherical bases. Furthermore, we compare the different morphologies produced with electron microscopies and grazing-incidence synchrotron X-ray diffraction. We find the nanoparticles are polycrystalline in nature and are compressively strained perpendicular to the direction of growth, and expansively strained along the direction of growth. X-ray diffractometers primarily designed for surface X-ray diffraction are often used to measure the diffraction from powders, textured materials and fiber-texture samples in 2θ scans. Unlike in high-energy powder diffraction, only a fraction of the powder rings is typically measured, and the data consist of many detector images across the 2θ range. Such diffractometers typically scan in directions not possible on a conventional laboratory diffractometer, which gives enhanced control of the scattering vector relative to the sample orientation. There are, however, very few examples where the measured intensity is directly used, such as for profile/Rietveld refinement, as is common with other powder diffraction data. Although the underlying physics is known, converting the data is time consuming and the appropriate corrections are dispersed across several publications, often not with powder diffraction in mind. This paper presents the angle calculations and correction factors required to calculate meaningful intensities for 2θ scans with a (2 + 3)-type diffractometer and an area detector. We have developed a microscope with a spatial resolution of 5 μm, which can be used to image the two-dimensional surface optical reflectance (2D-SOR) of polycrystalline samples in operando conditions. Within the field of surface science, operando tools that give information about the surface structure or chemistry of a sample under realistic experimental conditions have proven to be very valuable to understand the intrinsic reaction mechanisms in thermal catalysis, electrocatalysis, and corrosion science. To study heterogeneous surfaces in situ , the experimental technique must both have spatial resolution and be able to probe through gas or electrolyte. Traditional electron-based surface science techniques are difficult to use under high gas pressure conditions or in an electrolyte due to the short mean free path of electrons. Since it uses visible light, SOR can easily be used under high gas pressure conditions and in the presence of an electrolyte. In this work, we use SOR in combination with a light microscope to gain information about the surface under realistic experimental conditions. We demonstrate this by studying the different grains of three polycrystalline samples: Pd during CO oxidation, Au in electrocatalysis, and duplex stainless steel in corrosion. Optical light-based techniques such as SOR could prove to be a good alternative or addition to more complicated techniques in improving our understanding of complex polycrystalline surfaces with operando measurements.

Accurate measurement of the hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA is important for the management of patients with chronic HBV infection. Here, the performance of the Xpert ® HBV Viral Load test (Xpert HBV Viral Load) versus the Roche COBAS ® Ampliprep/COBAS ® TaqMan ® system (CAP/CTM HBV) HBV test v2.0 was evaluated. From September 2017 to December 2017, a total of 876 prospectively collected or archived serum or EDTA plasma specimens from subjects chronically infected with HBV were tested using the Xpert HBV Viral Load and the CAP/CTM HBV v2.0 assays. Of the 876 specimens tested, 560 were within the quantitative range of both assays. The agreement between the two methods was 90.0%. No difference in plasma or serum samples was observed. Deming regression analysis showed a good correlation of the Xpert HBV Viral Load assay with the CAP/CTM HBV v2.0 assay. The Bland-Altman analysis showed a good agreement between the results of the Xpert HBV Viral Load assay and the CAP/CTM HBV assay, with a mean difference (±1.96 standard deviation) of 0.0091 ± 0.3852 Log IU/mL. Comparing the two assays, only nineteen specimens (2.1%) had a difference greater than 1.96 times the standard deviation. The Xpert ® HBV Viral Load test is suitable for monitoring patients with HBV infection and is useful in diagnostic settings.

Filamentous fungi play a key role as decomposers in Earth's nutrient cycles. In soils, substrates are heterogeneously distributed in microenvironments. Hence, individual hyphae of a mycelium may experience very different environmental conditions simultaneously. In the current work, we investigated how fungi cope with local environmental variations at single-cell level. We developed a method based on infrared spectroscopy that allows the direct, in-situ chemical imaging of the decomposition activity of individual hyphal tips. Colonies of the ectomycorrhizal Basidiomycete Paxillus involutus were grown on liquid media, while parts of colonies were allowed to colonize lignin patches. Oxidative decomposition of lignin by individual hyphae growing under different conditions was followed for a period of seven days. We identified two sub-populations of hyphal tips: one with low decomposition activity and one with much higher activity. Active cells secreted more extracellular polymeric substances and oxidized lignin more strongly. The ratio of active to inactive hyphae strongly depended on the environmental conditions in lignin patches, but was further mediated by the decomposition activity of entire mycelia. Phenotypic heterogeneity occurring between genetically identical hyphal tips may be an important strategy for filamentous fungi to cope with heterogeneous and constantly changing soil environments.

Purpose: To investigate the long-term results (at least 5 years of follow-up) of the mini asymmetric radial keratotomy (MARK) and corneal cross-linking (CXL) combined intervention, also known as the 'Rome protocol,' for patients with progressive stage I and II keratoconus and contact lens intolerance., Methods: This was a retrospective observational case series. Fifteen eyes of 12 patients were evaluated, with a mean follow-up of 6.9 years. To assess the efficacy and stability of the MARK + CXL combined protocol, best spectacle-corrected visual acuity, mean pachymetry, and mean keratometry were recorded preoperatively and at least 1, 3, and 5 years postoperatively. Statistical analysis was performed using the R platform and involved the Wilcoxon signed-rank and Kruskal-Wallis non-parametric tests., Results: Best spectacle-corrected visual acuity improved for all patients, from 0.46 ± 0.69 logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution (20 / 60) to 0.15 ± 0.69 logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution (20 / 30, p = 0.0006), while mean pachymetry increased in 93% of patients, from 442.80 ± 61.02 to 464.50 ± 62.72 μm ( p = 0.003). Lastly, mean keratometry improved in 87% of patients after 6.9 years of observation from 48.82 ± 5.00 to 43.25 ± 3.58 diopters ( p = 0.008). No intraoperative or postoperative complications were observed., Conclusions: The MARK + CXL combined protocol was effective in treating keratoconus by halting corneal thinning and bulging. In addition, this procedure significantly improved visual acuity based on long-term follow-up data. Aim: To present the case of a 14-year-old boy with bilateral stage IV keratoconus, treated with a combined MARK + CXL intervention, without the need for a corneal transplantation., Results: The left eye displays considerable improvements, with a follow-up of 13.5 years: Kmax is decreased by 5.53 D, Kmed is decreased by 1.95 D and thinnest pachymetry is increased by 106 µm. The right eye shows equally remarkable parameters, with a follow-up of 9.5 years: Kmax is decreased by 8.16 D, Kmed is decreased by 0.38 D and thinnest pachymetry is increased by 52 µm. Keratoconus has been halted and the patient has a binocular best corrected visual acuity of -0.079 LogMAR (12/10)., Conclusion: The MARK + CXL combined intervention, known as the "Rome Protocol", was successful in halting a bilateral stage IV keratoconus and improving visual acuity in a very young patient, with long-term follow-up. The behaviour of anti-HAV antibodies was studied in the following conditions: a) a sample group of 2645 subjects from a healthy population; b) a group of 32 subjects with previous HB-Ag negative viral hepatitis; c) 12 cases of acute virus A hepatitis; d) a group of 18 anti-HAV positive women at the end of their pregnancies the antibodies were thus also studied in the funicular blood and in the newborn babies. The results showed: a) high reactivity (78%) of the healthy population to anti-HAV's; b) the possibility of an a posteriori diagnosis of virus A hepatitis in the presence of serology, negative for B type hepatitis, and positive for the anti-HAV's but with a titre higher than 1:200; c) the possibility of a serological diagnosis of acute virus A hepatitis in the presence of serology, negative for B type hepatitis and positive for the anti-HAV's with high and progressively increasing titre; d) the possibility of anti-HAV antibodies passing from mother to foetus, and the rapid elimination of the antibodies by the newborn baby within a month of his birth.
