Young isolated neutron stars (INS) most commonly manifest themselves as rotationally powered pulsars (RPPs) which involve conventional radio pulsars as well as gamma-ray pulsars (GRPs) and rotating radio transients (RRATs). Some other young INS families manifest themselves as anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs) and soft gamma-ray repeaters (SGRs) which are commonly accepted as magnetars, i.e. magnetically powered neutron stars with decaying superstrong fields. Yet some other young INS are identified as central compact objects (CCOs) and X-ray dim isolated neutron stars (XDINSs) which are cooling objects powered by their thermal energy. Older pulsars, as a result of a previous long episode of accretion from a companion, manifest themselves as millisecond pulsars and more commonly appear in binary systems. We use Dirichlet process Gaussian mixture model (DPGMM), an unsupervised machine learning algorithm, for analyzing the distribution of these pulsar families in the parameter space of period and period derivative. We compare the average values of the characteristic age, magnetic dipole field strength, surface temperature and transverse velocity of all discovered clusters. We verify that DPGMM is robust and provides hints for inferring relations between different classes of pulsars. We discuss the implications of our findings for the magneto-thermal spin evolution models and fallback discs., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS (14 January 2020). 11 pages, 4 figures, 7 tables

Plasmodium knowlesi has risen in importance as a zoonotic parasite that has been causing regular episodes of malaria throughout South East Asia. The P. knowlesi genome sequence generated in 2008 highlighted and confirmed many similarities and differences in Plasmodium species, including a global view of several multigene families, such as the large SICAvar multigene family encoding the variant antigens known as the schizont-infected cell agglutination proteins. However, repetitive DNA sequences are the bane of any genome project, and this and other Plasmodium genome projects have not been immune to the gaps, rearrangements and other pitfalls created by these genomic features. Today, long-read PacBio and chromatin conformation technologies are overcoming such obstacles. Here, based on the use of these technologies, we present a highly refined de novo P. knowlesi genome sequence of the Pk1(A+) clone. This sequence and annotation, referred to as the 'MaHPIC Pk genome sequence', includes manual annotation of the SICAvar gene family with 136 full-length members categorized as type I or II. This sequence provides a framework that will permit a better understanding of the SICAvar repertoire, selective pressures acting on this gene family and mechanisms of antigenic variation in this species and other pathogens.

Antigenic variation in malaria was discovered in Plasmodium knowlesi studies involving longitudinal infections of rhesus macaques (M. mulatta). The variant proteins, known as the P. knowlesi Schizont Infected Cell Agglutination (SICA) antigens and the P. falciparum Erythrocyte Membrane Protein 1 (PfEMP1) antigens, expressed by the SICAvar and var multigene families, respectively, have been studied for over 30 years. Expression of the SICA antigens in P. knowlesi requires a splenic component, and specific antibodies are necessary for variant antigen switch events in vivo. Outstanding questions revolve around the role of the spleen and the mechanisms by which the expression of these variant antigen families are regulated. Importantly, the longitudinal dynamics and molecular mechanisms that govern variant antigen expression can be studied with P. knowlesi infection of its mammalian and vector hosts. Synchronous infections can be initiated with established clones and studied at multi-omic levels, with the benefit of computational tools from systems biology that permit the integration of datasets and the design of explanatory, predictive mathematical models. Here we provide an historical account of this topic, while highlighting the potential for maximizing the use of P. knowlesi - macaque model systems and summarizing exciting new progress in this area of research.

- Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all domains of human life, including the economic and social fabric of societies. One of the central strategies for managing public health throughout the pandemic has been through persuasive messaging and collective behaviour change. To help scholars better understand the social and moral psychology behind public health behaviour, we present a dataset comprising of 51,404 individuals from 69 countries. This dataset was collected for the International Collaboration on Social & Moral Psychology of COVID-19 project (ICSMP COVID-19). This social science survey invited participants around the world to complete a series of moral and psychological measures and public health attitudes about COVID-19 during an early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic (between April and June 2020). The survey included seven broad categories of questions: COVID-19 beliefs and compliance behaviours; identity and social attitudes; ideology; health and well-being; moral beliefs and motivation; personality traits; and demographic variables. We report both raw and cleaned data, along with all survey materials, data visualisations, and psychometric evaluations of key variables.

- Abstract
Changing collective behaviour and supporting non-pharmaceutical interventions is an important component in mitigating virus transmission during a pandemic. In a large international collaboration (Study 1, N = 49,968 across 67 countries), we investigated self-reported factors associated with public health behaviours (e.g., spatial distancing and stricter hygiene) and endorsed public policy interventions (e.g., closing bars and restaurants) during the early stage of the COVID-19 pandemic (April-May 2020). Respondents who reported identifying more strongly with their nation consistently reported greater engagement in public health behaviours and support for public health policies. Results were similar for representative and non-representative national samples. Study 2 (N = 42 countries) conceptually replicated the central finding using aggregate indices of national identity (obtained using the World Values Survey) and a measure of actual behaviour change during the pandemic (obtained from Google mobility reports). Higher levels of national identification prior to the pandemic predicted lower mobility during the early stage of the pandemic (r = −0.40). We discuss the potential implications of links between national identity, leadership, and public health for managing COVID-19 and future pandemics.

- Abstract
Transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers have recently garnered significant attention owing to their favorable electronic and optoelectronic properties. To date, chemical vapor deposition (CVD) growth of molybdenum di-sulfide, -selenide, and -telluride (MoS2, MoSe2, and MoTe2, respectively), and tungsten di-sulfide, -selenide, and -telluride (WS2, WSe2, and WTe2, respectively) has been widely investigated as the most promising two-dimensional (2D) TMDs. However, scalable and controllable growth of high-quality TMD monolayers remains a challenge. This review highlights the advances of CVD technique by focusing on the aspects of growth promoters, surface energy assistance and site selectivity, which are of great significance for the growth of monolayer TMDs. The challenges for high-performance applications are discussed at the end with a brief outlook on future work. © 2022 Elsevier Ltd, Türkiye Bilimsel ve Teknolojik Araştirma Kurumu, TÜBITAK: 118C524, 118E996, 121M601, 20AG001, 20AG025, This work was supported by The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey , Research Project Numbers: TÜBİTAK 121M601 , TÜBİTAK 118C524 , TÜBİTAK 118E996 , TÜBİTAK 20AG025 , TÜBİTAK 20AG001 .

- Abstract
At the beginning of 2020, COVID-19 became a global problem. Despite all the efforts to emphasize the relevance of preventive measures, not everyone adhered to them. Thus, learning more about the characteristics determining attitudinal and behavioral responses to the pandemic is crucial to improving future interventions. In this study, we applied machine learning on the multinational data collected by the International Collaboration on the Social and Moral Psychology of COVID-19 (N = 51,404) to test the predictive efficacy of constructs from social, moral, cognitive, and personality psychology, as well as socio-demographic factors, in the attitudinal and behavioral responses to the pandemic. The results point to several valuable insights. Internalized moral identity provided the most consistent predictive contribution—individuals perceiving moral traits as central to their self-concept reported higher adherence to preventive measures. Similar results were found for morality as cooperation, symbolized moral identity, self-control, open-mindedness, and collective narcissism, while the inverse relationship was evident for the endorsement of conspiracy theories. However, we also found a non-neglible variability in the explained variance and predictive contributions with respect to macro-level factors such as the pandemic stage or cultural region. Overall, the results underscore the importance of morality-related and contextual factors in understanding adherence to public health recommendations during the pandemic

- Abstract
Understanding collective behaviour is an important aspect of managing the pandemic response. Here the authors show in a large global study that participants that reported identifying more strongly with their nation reported greater engagement in public health behaviours and support for public health policies in the context of the pandemic.Changing collective behaviour and supporting non-pharmaceutical interventions is an important component in mitigating virus transmission during a pandemic. Higher levels of national identification prior to the pandemic predicted lower mobility during the early stage of the pandemic (r = -0.40). We discuss the potential implications of links between national identity, leadership, and public health for managing COVID-19 and future pandemics., John Templeton Foundation (JTF); Narodowe Centrum Nauki (National Science Centre); UK Research & Innovation (UKRI); Medical Research Council UK (MRC); Economic Social Research Council Impact Acceleration Award; Economic Social Research Council Impact Acceleration Award; University of Oxford; Gouvernement du Canada Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (Conseil de recherches en sciences humaines du Canada); Agentura na Podporu Vyskumu a Vyvoja (Slovak Research and Development Agency); Austrian Science Fund (FWF); Universitat Wien (University of Vienna); Ministry of Science and Technology, Taiwan (Ministry of Science and Technology of Taiwan); Aarhus Universitets Forskningsfond (Aarhus University Research Foundation); Swedish Research Council; Carlsberg Foundation; Ministarstvo Prosvete, Nauke i Tehnolokog Razvoja (Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development of the Republic of Serbia); NOMIS Stiftung (NOMIS Foundation); National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC); UK Research & Innovation (UKRI), Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC); French National Research Agency (ANR); German Research Foundation (DFG); Gouvernement du Canada | Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (Conseil de Recherches en Sciences Naturelles et en Genie du Canada); HKUST IEMS research grant project, funded by EY; Coordenacao de Aperfeicoamento de Pessoal de Nivel Superior (Brazilian Federal Agency for the Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education); Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation | Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Cientifico e Tecnologico (National Council for Scientific and Technological Development); Research Council of Norway through its Centres of Excellence Scheme; Institute of Social Sciences Ivo Pilar; J. The paper studies the apparatus of mathematical statistics for predicting the technological efficiency of hydrochloric acid treatments. The apparatus of mathematical statistics is quite widely used to process the results of measurements of field data, for example, during the assessment of the effectiveness of various methods of oil recovery increase. As a result, we developed a method to predict the efficiency of the HAT for injection wells using power-law regression equations. With an accuracy satisfactory for field purposes (even in the presence of a sparsely representative sample of actual data), which ensures the prediction of the technological efficiency of production wells in terms of the amount of additional oil production and the value of its duration after the HAT on the adjacent injection wells, it was proposed to use regression equations of the second degree.

In this work, high-gain on-chip Er3+ doped Al2O3 single-mode ridge waveguide amplifier device is reported. The growth of the active layer is realized using atomic layer deposition (ALD) compatible with Si processing technology. Optimization of the Al2O3 and Er2O3 growth conditions for fine-tuning the optical properties is systematically investigated. In order to optimize the active ion concentration, heterocycle structures consisting of separately optimized Al2O3 and Er2O3 are deposited. The structural and optical properties of the active layers were characterized by spectroscopic ellipsometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, time-resolved photoluminescence, and optical gain measurements. We demonstrated up to 2.74 +/- 0.40 dB total gain and 13.71 +/- 1.97 dB/cm internal optical net gain per unit length at 1550 +/- 12 nm using a 2-mm-long device, pumped using a 980 nm laser diode at 23-mW. This work can be expanded to other rare-earth ion doping processes, paving the way to significant improvements of active on-chip applications.

Both passive and active, single mode, wavelength and polarization insensitive design of Al2O3 rib waveguides on SiO2 substrate is reported. Influence of the waveguide height, etch depth, waveguide width and operation wavelength to the mode number, mode size, birefringence and polarization sensitivity were analyzed with Beam Propagation Method. Design parameters for targeted properties are computed for waveguide widths ranging from 0 to 10 µm, and for etch depth ranging from 0 to 0.5 µm for fixed waveguide height of 0.5 µm. A design window for a fixed width of 3.5 µm and etch depths between 0.325 to 0.375 µm is identified for single mode, wavelength and polarization insensitive operation of Al2O3 waveguides on thermal oxide. A novel rib TE mode selective filter design is also suggested as an output of the numerical simulations.

The article discusses the apparatus of mathematical statistics for predicting the technological effectiveness of hydraulic fracturing. The authors made an attempt to improve the methods for processing experimental data in the conditions of a small sampling. The main method used for solving this problem was the second-order regression equation in the form of a polynomial. The comparison of calculated and actual data on technological results for hydraulic fracturing based on the solution of second-order polynomial regression equations for different fields showed a high level of convergence, which allows us to conclude that the proposed methodology for constructing a regression equation in the form of a power polynomial is acceptable.

The article presents the study results of the influence of the orientation of a vertical crack from hydraulic fracturing treatment on the efficiency of oil reserve recovery, indicating the crack propagation direction. It was found that the increase in initial recoverable reserves is the greater, the longer the crack length is, and if the crack is oriented parallel and perpendicular to the filtration flow down to the permeable zone in the stagnant or deadlock zone, then the perpendicular connecting current lines from the injection well to the recovery well is most effective. The presented results show that HFT significantly changes the conditions for the oil reserve recovery in general in the reservoir area. Therefore, it is relevant to assess the contribution of a single HFT to the oil recovery factor of the reservoir area, as well as its effect on the wells density grid.

Using correlation analysis, the authors assess the impact of geological and physical, geological and technological properties on the technological effect in the development of fields using hydraulic fracturing. The dependence of technological effect of hydraulic fracturing from the quality of casing string annulus fixing is also considered. The analysis of technological efficiency of regular technology of hydraulic fracturing in conditions of JSC TATNEFT showed its insufficient level due to the lack of methods which take into account the impact of geological and physical, geological and technological factors. The study of correlation relationship between field results of hydraulic fracturing and reservoir properties established quantitative geological field criteria for its effective use, which allowed to make a more informed choice of objects of impact.

In this thesis, theoretical explanations on political decisions are tested experimentally. By using the assumptions of formal theories and predictions of the relevant models, a game has been designed as a political election simulation. Data from the experiment is analyzed; no macro data has been used. Except for the experimental outcomes, no empirical evidence is yielded. The aim of this experiment was to observe individual behaviors in a simulation. Therefore, instead of providing macro predictions and empirical evidence, this study provides explanations from behavioral economics approach to individual strategies. Social preference models and political competition theory has been examined by using an experimental model. This study showed that individuals as politicians pursued strategies to maximize their votes. On the other hand, we observed that voters mostly vote self interestedly. 90

The organic-petrographic and organic-geochemical characteristics and hydrocarbon-generation potential of coals of the Tokat Province, formed in a limnotelmatic depositional environment- namely, from Zile and Artova counties, in the western and southwestern parts of the province, respectively - were evaluated within the scope of this study. Two coals seams with a total thickness of about 17 m in the vicinity of Zile are being mined by open-pit method and are used in nearby population centers. Organic-geochemical evaluations were done using Rock-Eval pyrolysis and GC, GC-MS and C13-isotopic analyses such that the amounts and types, as well as the degree of coalification, of the organic matter were determined. On the basis of organic-petrographic, coal-quality and maturation characteristics, the highly variable Artova and Zile coals are classified as sub-bituminous. The results of Rock-Eval analysis indicate type II/III and type III kerogen. The organic components of the coals are predominantly huminite-group macerals and, to a lesser extent, are from the inertinite and liptinite groups. Furthermore, the coals have high ash and sulfur contents. On the basis of maceral contents, the depositional environment of these coals was either a forest swamp or lake. The organic-matter contents and types suggest potential for gas generation rather than for petroleum generation., Erik, N. Focused ion beam (FIB) milling is an emerging technology that enables fast, reliable and well-controlled nanometer-size feature definition. In this work we will discuss applications of the tool in the area of photonics. The FIB technique can be adapted and optimized almost for any material system since it involves physical removal of material by a beam of ions. Specific strategies can be developed in order to optimize the nano-structuring processes which are strongly dependent on the geometry of the desired structure. In this work we will report on the impact of parameters such as ion beam current, dwell time, scanning strategy, and dielectric charging on the nanofabrication process. As sample structures we will focus on gratings formed on optical waveguides in different material systems. The grating structures form the basic reflective elements in on-chip integrated waveguide laser devices. Straight sidewalls are desired for minimizing the out-of-plane losses. Both, high depth and straight sidewalls demand for a good control over the re-deposition of material taking place during the milling process. The grating structures were realized by use of a FEI Nova 600 dual beam FIB machine. The acceleration voltage was set to 30 kV. The milling current was varied between 93 pA and 280 pA. In order to analyze grating parameters such as grating depth or sidewall slope, cross-sectioning of the milled structures was performed. Pt was in-situ and locally grown in order to avoid material re-deposition while milling the cross-section. Different optimization processes were applied and good optical quality grating structures in the Al2O3, Y2O3 and KGdxLu1-x(WO4)2:Yb3+ material platforms were obtained. The effect of redeposition was minimized and an excellent control of the nano-structuring process has been achieved. Fabry-Pérot microcavities were defined and used to assess their optical performance. An on-chip waveguide laser in rare-earth-ion-doped materials was demonstrated.

We report our recent work on obtaining on-chip lasers in crystalline double tungstate waveguides using focused-ion-beam (FIB) nanostructuring. Photonic cavity structures were defined by forming deeply etched Bragg gratings in KGdxLu1-x(WO4)2:Yb3+ using FIB milling. The FIB milling procedure was optimized and gratings more than 4 μm in depth with an improved total sidewall angle of about 5 degrees were achieved. Their optical performance was assessed at 1530 nm in Fabry-Pérot microcavities realized on the waveguides. An on-chip integrated laser cavity at ?980 nm was achieved by defining a FIB reflective grating and FIB-polished waveguide end-facet. With this cavity, an on-chip integrated waveguide laser in crystalline potassium double tungstate was demonstrated for the first time.

Dielectric Er3+- and Nd3+-doped waveguide materials offer broad gain in the third, second, and first telecommunication windows. Rare-earth-ion-doped Al2O3 has broad emission spectra for gain over a wider wavelength range, a high refractive index contrast which allows tighter bend radii and more compact devices, and can be deposited on a number of common substrates, including thermally oxidized Si wafers. This opens the possibility for integration of Al2O3 directly with photonic materials which are optimized for passive waveguiding functions. In this contribution we present recent results demonstrating the high performance of Er3+- and Nd3+-doped Al2O3 integrated optical amplifiers. Rare-earth-ion-doped Al2O3 layers were deposited onto thermally oxidized Si wafers by reactive co-sputtering and channel waveguides were microstructured by chlorine-based reactive ion etching. We developed Al2O3:Er3+ amplifiers with up to 2.0 dB/cm net gain at 1533 nm and gain over an 80-nm bandwidth, among others enabling loss-less power splitters over the entire telecom C-band, and demonstrated 170-Gbit/s signal transmission in an integrated Al2O3:Er3+ amplifier. In Al2O3:Nd3+ amplifiers, net gain of 6.3 dB/cm at 1064 nm and 1.93 dB/cm at 1330 nm, as well as in the range 865-930 nm with a peak gain of 1.57 dB/cm at 880 nm was obtained. Monolithic integration of Al2O3:Er3+ amplifiers with passive silicon-on-insulator waveguides was demonstrated and a signal enhancement of >7 dB at 1533 nm wavelength was obtained. The straightforward wafer-scale fabrication process allows for parallel integration of multiple amplifier and laser sections with silicon or other photonic circuits on a chip. Furthermore, a solution for compensating losses in optical interconnects is provided. Large-core Al2O3:Nd3+ channel waveguide amplifiers were tested in combination with passive polymer waveguides. Coupling between the two waveguide types was optimized and tapering the Al2O3:Nd3+ waveguide improved the pump intensity in the active region. 0.21 dB net gain at 880 nm was demonstrated in a structure with an Al2O3:Nd3+ waveguide coupled between two polymer waveguides. In spectroscopic investigations, the influence of energy migration and energy-transfer upconversion (ETU) among neighboring Er3+ ions on luminescence decay in Al2O3:Er3+ was investigated. We observed a fast quenching process induced by, e.g., active ion pairs and clusters, undesired impurities, or host material defects such as voids. This process was verified by pump-absorption experiments, but was not revealed by any particular signature in the luminescence decay curves. This result highlights the fact that spectroscopic processes can be – and in many cases probably are – present in optical materials, although these processes are invisible in any kind of luminescence measurements, because they do not lead to the emission of a photon. On the other hand, we show that these processes strongly affect device performance as an amplifier.
