Background and purpose: Immunotherapy, with or without radiotherapy (iRT or ICIs-nonRT), is the standard treatment for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Nonetheless, the response to the treatment varies among patients. Given the established role of aspartate aminotransferase/alanine transaminase (AST/ALT) ratio in predicting cancer prognosis, we sought to identify whether the pretreatment AST/ALT ratio has the potential to serve as a prognostic factor for NSCLC patients receiving ICIs-nonRT and iRT. Materials and methods: We retrospectively analyzed NSCLC patients who received immunotherapy between April 2018 and March 2021. Patients were classified into iRT group and ICIs-nonRT group and further classified based on AST/ALT ratio cut-off values. The Kaplan-Meier (KM) method estimated the time-to-event endpoints (progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). Results: Of the cohort, 239 underwent ICIs-nonRT and 155 received iRT. Higher AST/ALT ratios correlated with worse outcomes in the ICIs-nonRT group but indicated better outcomes in those who received iRT. Multivariate analysis validated AST/ALT ratio as an independent prognostic factor. For AST/ALT ratios between 0.67-1.7, both ICIs-nonRT and iRT yielded similar treatment outcomes; with AST/ALT ratios greater than 1.7, iRT could be a more favorable treatment option (P=0.038). Conversely, for ratios less than 0.67, ICIs-nonRT could be a more favorable treatment option (P=0.073). Conclusions: The pre-treatment AST/ALT ratio demonstrates potential as a prognostic marker for treatment outcomes in NSCLC patients receiving either ICIs-nonRT or iRT. However, its prognostic value in patients with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) remains unclear. Methods: A total of 265 MDS patients were divided into two groups by R. The clinical, laboratory, and follow-up data of patients with MDS were collected, while the relationship between AST/ALT ratio and overall survival (OS) and leukemia-free survival (LFS) were also analyzed. Results: The results showed that higher AST/ALT ratio was associated with higher age, β2-microglobulin level, and number of co-mutations (>4). Moreover, the high AST/ALT group had a significantly shorter OS and LFS than the low AST/ALT group. Multivariate analysis involving the Revised International Prognostic Scoring System (IPSS-R) showed that a higher AST/ALT ratio was an independent adverse factor for OS or LFS; however, the same was not noted in the multivariate analysis involving the new Molecular International Prognostic Scoring System (IPSS-M). Conclusions: Our study suggests that the AST/ALT ratio could be a simple and economic prognostic indicator for MDS and be used as a supplement to IPSS-R, especially when lacking of karyotype or mutation data.

This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of metabolically healthy obesity (MHO) according to two different consensus-based criteria and to investigate simple, measurable predictive markers for the diagnosis of MHO. Five hundred and ninety-three obese children and adolescents aged 6–18 years were included in the study. The frequency of MHO was calculated. ROC analysis was used to estimate the predictive value of AST/ALT ratio, waist/hip ratio, MPV, TSH, and Ft4 cut-off value for the diagnosis of MHO. The prevalence of MHO was 21.9% and 10.2% according to 2018 and 2023 consensus-based MHO criteria, respectively. AST/ALT ratio cut-off value for the diagnosis of MHO was calculated as ≥ 1 with 77% sensitivity and 52% specificity using Damanhoury et al.'s criteria (AUC = 0.61, p = 0.02), and 90% sensitivity and 51% specificity using Abiri et al.'s criteria (AUC = 0.70, p = 0.01). Additionally, using binomial regression analysis, only the AST/ALT ratio is independently and significantly associated with the diagnosis of MHO (p = 0.03 for 2018 criteria and p = 0.04 for 2023 criteria). Conclusion: The ALT/AST ratio may be a useful indicator of MHO in children and adolescents. De Ritis quotient (De Ritis ratio), is transaminase aspartate to transaminase alanine ratio (AST/ALT ratio), in plasma/serum. It is used as a prognostic factor or risk factor in various diseases in human medicine. Increase of AST/ALT ratio was observed in acute kidney injury, both in human and canine medicine. This increase results from increased serum AST activity relatively higher than increase of ALT activity. It seems that kidneys are the main source of AST in plasma of humans and dogs with acute kidney disease. Abstract Background Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) is a significant risk factor for liver-related disorders. Hepatic fibrosis staging by liver biopsy in these patients can lead to complications. This study aimed to compare aspartate aminotransferase/alanine aminotransferase (AST/ALT) ratio, AST to platelet ratio index (APRI), and fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) with FibroScan results for the evaluation of hepatic fibrosis in CHB patients. Methods This cross-sectional study included patients with CHB referred to the outpatient clinics of Bandar Abbas, Hormozgan, Iran, in 2021. The age and sex of the participants were noted. FibroScan evaluation was done for all subjects. Moreover, AST, ALT, and platelet counts were measured in their blood samples within one month of the FibroScan evaluation. Results Of the 267 CHB patients evaluated in the present study (mean age: 45.45 ± 18.16 years), 173 (64.8%) were male. According to FibroScan results, 65 CHB patients (24.3%) had F1, 53 (19.9%) F2, 38 (14.2%) F3, and 20 (7.5%) F4 liver fibrosis. This study investigates the prognostic value of the aspartate-to-alanine aminotransferase ratio (i.e., AST/ALT ratio) and bilirubin in patients with cardiogenic shock (CS). Despite ongoing improvements regarding the treatment of CS patients, invasive care unit (ICU) mortality in CS patients remains unacceptably high. Limited data regarding the prognostic value of the AST/ALT ratio and bilirubin in patients suffering from CS is available. The authors hypothesize the measurement of liver enzymes during the course of CS may be an easy and feasible method to assess right-heart dysfunction and prognosis in patients with CS. Consecutive patients with CS from 2019 to 2021 were included. Blood samples were retrieved from the day of disease onset (day 1), days 2, 3, 4 and 8. The prognostic value of the AST/ALT ratio and bilirubin was tested for 30-day all-cause mortality. Statistical analyses included univariable t-tests, Spearman's correlations, Kaplan–Meier analyses, as well as multivariable Cox proportional regression analyses. A total of 157 CS patients were included, with an overall rate of all-cause mortality at 30 days of 51%. The median AST/ALT ratio on day 1 was 1.4, and the median bilirubin was 0.63 mg/dL. No association of the baseline AST/ALT ratio (HR = 1.005; 95% CI 0.649–1.558; p = 0.981) and bilirubin (HR = 1.320; 95% CI 0.834–2.090; p = 0.236) with the risk of 30-day all-cause mortality was found. In contrast, the AST/ALT ratio on day 4 was associated with the risk of 30-day all-cause mortality (HR = 2.826; 95% CI 1.227–6.510; p = 0.015), which was still evident after the multivariable adjustment (HR = 2.830; 95% CI 1.054–7.690; p = 0.039). Background: The aspartate aminotransferase/alanine aminotransferase (AST/ALT) ratio, also known as De Ritis ratio, has been reportedly associated with malnutrition which plays a crucial role in sarcopenia. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between AST/ALT ratio and sarcopenia in the Chinese community-dwelling elderly. Methods: A cross-sectional study with 2751 participants (1343 men and 1408 women) aged ≥60 years was performed. Appendicular skeletal muscle mass index (ASMI), grip strength, and gait speed were measured to diagnose sarcopenia according to the latest Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS) consensus. The association of AST/ALT ratio with sarcopenia was examined using logistic regression analysis. Results: The prevalence of sarcopenia in the present study was 4.4%. AST/ALT ratio was higher in the sarcopenia group than in the non-sarcopenia group (1.30 ± 0.33 vs. 1.16 ± 0.62, P = 0.010). AST/ALT ratio was negatively correlated with the components of sarcopenia, including ASMI, grip strength, and gait speed. Abstract Background Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) usually demonstrates multi-organ injury with a high mortality rate. This study aimed to investigate associations of serum aspartate/alanine aminotransferase (AST)/ALT, cytosolic AST (cAST)/ALT and mitochondrial AST (mAST)/ALT ratios with the prognosis of SFTS patients. Methods A total of 355 confirmed SFTS patients were included. Clinical and laboratory data were compared between survivors and nonsurvivors. Logistic regression analysis was used to assess the independent risk factors for fatality in all patients and those admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). The predictive values of the risk factors and constructed risk models were evaluated. Results Mean age and biochemical parameters were significantly greater in nonsurvivors than in survivors. In ICU patients, the three ratios, high-sensitivity troponin I (hsTnI), creatine kinase (CK), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and α-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase (α-HBDH) were elevated markedly in nonsurvivors than in survivors. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that age, three ratios and α-HBDH were independent risk factors for mortality in all patients. Only the three ratios were independent risk factors for death in ICU patients. Risk Models (M1, M2 and M3) and simplified models (sMs) containing the three ratios respectively had comparatively high predictive values for fatality in all patients with area under ROC curves (AUCs) > 0.85. In ICU patients, mAST/ALT ratio had the highest predictive value, sensitivity and odds ratio (OR) for mortality among three ratios. Conclusion AST/ALT, cAST/ALT and mAST/ALT ratios were associated with unfavorable clinical outcome of SFTS. The prognostic value of mAST/ALT ratio was higher in severe cases.

Background and Objectives: We aimed to assess the effect of AST/ALT ratio on echocardiographic and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMRI) parameters after COVID-19 patients recover. Materials and Methods: 87 patients with COVID-19 were included in the study. The patients were hospitalized with COVID-19 pneumonia, but the patients did not need intensive care unit follow-up or non-invasive mechanical ventilation support. After a discharge and two weeks following the positive swab test result, patients were considered eligible if they had any symptoms. Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) was performed within 24 h prior to CMRI. The median value of AST/ALT ratio was found, and the study population was divided into two subgroups based on the median AST/ALT ratio value. The clinical features, blood test, TTE and CMRI results were compared between subgroups. Results: C-reactive protein, D-dimer and fibrinogen were found to be significantly higher in patients with high AST/ALT ratio. LVEF, TAPSE, S', and FAC were significantly lower in patients with high AST/ALT ratio. LV-GLS were significantly lower in patients with high AST/ALT ratio. In CMRI, native T1 mapping signal, native T2 mapping signal and extracellular volume raised significantly in patients with high AST/ALT ratio. Right ventricle stroke volume and right ventricle ejection fraction were significantly lower in patients with high AST/ALT ratio, but right ventricle end systolic volume was significantly higher in patients with high AST/ALT ratio. Conclusion: High AST/ALT ratio is related to impaired right ventricular function parameters with CMRI and echocardiography after recovery from acute COVID-19. Assessment of AST/ALT ratio at hospital admission may be used to assess the risk of cardiac involvement in COVID-19 disease, and these patients may require closer follow-up during and after the course of COVID-19. Although the AUROC curve of APRI and FIB-4 was similar (0.864) for distinguishing between F3/F4 and F0-F2 of liver fibrosis, FIB-4 had the best diagnostic accuracy (82.02%). Conclusions: APRI can rule out 95.4% of F3/F4 of liver fibrosis and rule in any grade of liver fibrosis in CHB patients by 90.78%. Methods: We used the AWGS 2014 as the diagnostic criteria for sarcopenia, considering both the loss in muscle mass, muscle strength and physical performance. A total of 2837 elderly female participants over 50 years of age from the West China Health and Aging Trend (WCHAT) study were included. Insulin, glucose, 25(OH)VD, procalcitonin, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, total protein, prealbumin, albumin, thyroid-stimulating hormone, free triiodothyronine, free tetraiodothyronine, triglycerides, cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein, very low-density lipoprotein, cortisol, and follicle-stimulating hormone were measured. Trace amines and their receptors are a family of G protein-coupled receptors widely distributed in the central nervous system and periphery. The trace amine-associated receptor 1 (TAAR1) plays a significant role as a therapeutic target for schizophrenia, depression, diabetes, and obesity. In this study, TAAR1 knockout mice and WT groups were tested in conditions of a high-fructose diet. The consumption of a high-fructose diet may be due to the influence on the metabolism processes by dopamine in the brain, neuromotor function, and level of anxiety of TAAR1 knockout mice. During a comparative analysis of behavioral, biochemical, and morphological parameters, significant differences were found between liver and biochemical parameters, the regulation of protein metabolism (AST/ALT ratio, creatine kinase activity, urea), and alterations in behavior. An elevated plus maze analysis showed the influence of fructose and genetic factors on the level of anxiety. A new marker of the grooming microstructure (depression ratio) was tested, which showed high efficiency as a marker of depression-like behavioral changes and a possible association with dopamine-dependent regulation of protein metabolism. These results confirm a possible association of the TAAR1 gene knockout with an increase in catabolic reaction levels by AST/ALT-dependent and possible dopamine-mediated protein metabolism regulation and depression-like behavior. Aims: This study aimed to evaluate the association between aspartate aminotransferase (AST)/alanine aminotransferase (ALT) ratio and cardiovascular disease, and risk factors in a healthy Japanese population. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted at St. Luke's International Hospital, Tokyo, Japan, between 2005 and 2018. We included all participants who visited the hospital for voluntary health checkups. Our primary outcome was the development of cardiovascular disease, and the secondary outcomes were cardiovascular risk factors. We grouped the participants into quartiles (Qs) according to their baseline AST/ALT ratios and examined the outcomes of patients in each group. Results: 87,740 participants were included in this study. The mean age of the participants was 44.9 years [standard deviation (SD): 12.1], and 43,191 (49.2%) were men. The mean AST and ALT levels were 21.7 IU/L (SD 10.0) and 22.4 IU/L (SD 16.5), respectively, resulting in a mean AST/ALT ratio of 1.1 (0.4). During the median follow-up of 1,829 days (interquartile range 756-3,470), 1,493 (1.7%) participants developed cardiovascular disease, 831 (1%) experienced ischemic heart disease, and 723 (0.8%) experienced strokes. Those in the Q1 AST/ALT ratio group had significantly higher hazard ratios compared to those in the Q3 AST/ALT ratio group [adjusted hazard ratio (HR)=1.32, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.12-1.56 for cardiovascular disease; HR=1.36, 95%CI: 1.09-1.68 for ischemic heart disease; HR=1.28, 95%CI: 1.00-1.65 for stroke]. However, those belonging to the Q4 or Q5 AST/ALT ratio groups was not statistically different for primary outcomes compared to the Q3 AST/ALT ratio group. In contrast, the adjusted HRs for all secondary outcomes decreased in a dose-dependent manner as the AST/ALT ratio increased. Conclusions: A Q1 AST/ALT ratio was associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease compared to the Q3 AST/ALT ratio in the Japanese population, which is in contrast with the Western population. In our study, Q4 or Q5 AST/ALT ratios were not associated with cardiovascular disease compared to the Q3 AST/ALT ratio. Objective: Recent evidence has revealed that the aspartate aminotransferase to alanine aminotransferase ratio (AST/ALT ratio) may be closely associated with metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance. However, it is unclear whether the AST/ALT ratio correlates with prediabetes risk. The aim of our study was to examine the association between AST/ALT ratios and the risk of prediabetes among a large cohort of Chinese subjects. Methods: This retrospective cohort study recruited 75204 Chinese adults with normoglycemia at baseline who underwent physical examinations at the Rich Healthcare Group from 2010 to 2016. The AST/ALT ratio at baseline was the target independent variable, and the risk of developing prediabetes during follow-up was the dependent variable. Cox proportional-hazards regression was used to evaluate the independent association between the AST/ALT ratio and prediabetes. This study identified nonlinear relationships by applying a generalized additive model (GAM) and smooth curve fitting. In order to assess the robustness of this study, we performed a series of sensitivity analyses. Moreover, we performed a subgroup analysis to evaluate the consistency of the association in different subgroups. Data from this study have been updated on the DATADRYAD website. Results: The AST/ALT ratio was negatively and independently related to the prediabetes risk among Chinese adults (HR: 0.76, 95% CI: 0.75-0.84, P<0.0001) after adjusting demographic and biochemical covariates. Furthermore, a nonlinear relationship between the AST/ALT ratio and the risk of developing prediabetes was found at an inflection point of 1.50 for the AST/ALT ratio. When the AST/ALT ratio was to the left of the inflection point (AST/ALT ratio ≤ 1.50), the AST/ALT ratio was negatively related to the prediabetes risk (HR:0.70, 95% CI: 0.65-0.76, P<0.0001). In contrast, the relationship tended to be saturated when the AST/ALT ratio was more than 1.50 (HR: 1.01, 95%CI: 0.89-1.15, P=0.8976). Our findings remained robust across a range of sensitivity analyses. Subgroup analysis revealed that other variables did not alter the relationship between the AST/ALT ratio and prediabetes risk. Conclusion: This study revealed that AST/ALT ratio was negatively and independently associated with prediabetes risk among Chinese participants. Abstract Background We aimed to evaluate the association between the aspartate aminotransferase (AST)/alanine aminotransferase (ALT) ratio and subsequent development of any type of cancer in an apparently healthy population. Methods We conducted a retrospective cohort study at St. Luke's International Hospital, Tokyo, Japan between 2005 and 2018. All participants who visited for voluntary health checkups were included. We divided the participants into different quintiles based on the baseline AST/ALT ratios and examined the outcomes. Results A total of 85,658 participants were included. The mean age was 44.7 years (standard deviation 12.0) at baseline, and 42,913 (50.1%) of them were men. During a median follow‐up of 61.6 months, 4701 (5.5%) participants developed some type of cancer. Compared with the middle AST/ALT ratio group, no other groups had similar adjusted hazard ratios (HR) for the development of any type of cancer in both men and women. When stratified by alcohol consumption, very high (adjusted HR 1.36; 95% CI 1.13–1.63) and high (adjusted HR 1.26; 95% CI 1.05–1.50) AST/ALT ratio groups among men who were regular drinkers had increased adjusted HRs for any type of cancer development, but the very high AST/ALT ratio group among men who were abstainers (adjusted HR 0.64; 95% CI 0.42–0.97) and very low AST/ALT ratio group among men who were occasional drinkers (adjusted HR 0.69; 95% CI 0.48–0.98) had lower adjusted HRs compared with the middle AST/ALT ratio group. Among women, regardless of alcohol consumption, adjusted HR for any type of cancer development was similar across all AST/ALT ratio groups. Conclusion People with higher AST/ALT ratios tended to have a higher risk of developing any type of cancer among men who were regular drinkers, but this risk was lower among men who were abstainers. Among women, regardless of alcohol consumption, there was no association between the development of any type of cancer and AST/ALT ratio.

This study investigates the prognostic value of the aspartate-to-alanine aminotransferase ratio (i.e., AST/ALT ratio) and bilirubin in patients with cardiogenic shock (CS). Despite ongoing improvements regarding the treatment of CS patients, invasive care unit (ICU) mortality in CS patients remains unacceptably high. Limited data regarding the prognostic value of the AST/ALT ratio and bilirubin in patients suffering from CS is available. The authors hypothesize the measurement of liver enzymes during the course of CS may be an easy and feasible method to assess right-heart dysfunction and prognosis in patients with CS. Consecutive patients with CS from 2019 to 2021 were included. Blood samples were retrieved from the day of disease onset (day 1), days 2, 3, 4 and 8. The prognostic value of the AST/ALT ratio and bilirubin was tested for 30-day all-cause mortality. Statistical analyses included univariable t-tests, Spearman’s correlations, Kaplan–Meier analyses, as well as multivariable Cox proportional regression analyses. A total of 157 CS patients were included, with an overall rate of all-cause mortality at 30 days of 51%. The median AST/ALT ratio on day 1 was 1.4, and the median bilirubin was 0.63 mg/dL. No association of the baseline AST/ALT ratio (HR = 1.005; 95% CI 0.649–1.558; p = 0.981) and bilirubin (HR = 1.320; 95% CI 0.834–2.090; p = 0.236) with the risk of 30-day all-cause mortality was found. In contrast, the AST/ALT ratio on day 4 was associated with the risk of 30-day all-cause mortality (HR = 2.826; 95% CI 1.227–6.510; p = 0.015), which was still evident after the multivariable adjustment (HR = 2.830; 95% CI 1.054–7.690; p = 0.039). The AST/ALT ratio during the course of ICU hospitalization from day 4—but not the baseline AST/ALT ratio and bilirubin—was associated with an increased risk of 30-day all-cause mortality in CS patients.

Aims: The aim of this study was to calculate the cut‐off values of liver enzymes to identify the risk of incident type 2 diabetes (DM) and to investigate the association between liver enzymes and incident DM in participants with or without obesity. Materials and Methods: The long‐term cohort study included 70,688 subjects who underwent medical health checkups in 2008. The cut‐off values of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and the aminotransferase (AST)/ALT ratio for incident DM were evaluated using the time‐dependent receiver operating characteristic curves. The risk of incident type 2 DM was examined according to cut‐off values of liver enzymes and the group with body mass index (BMI) ≥25 kg/m2 using Cox regression analyses. Results: In total, 4181 of 70,688 subjects developed DM within 10 years. The area under the curve and cut‐off values for the ALT and the AST/ALT ratio for incident type 2 DM at 10 years were 0.707 and 23 IU/L and 0.694 and 0.875, respectively. The risk of incident DM was higher in subjects with ALT ≥23 or AST/ALT ≤0.875 and BMI <25 kg/m2 than in those with ALT <23 IU/L or AST/ALT >0.875 and BMI ≥25 kg/m2, respectively. Conclusions: The cut‐off values of ALT and the AST/ALT ratio associated with the risk of incident type 2 DM were determined. Background and Purpose: Immunotherapy, with or without radiotherapy (iRT or ICIs-nonRT), is the standard treatment for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Nonetheless, the response to the treatment varies among patients. Given the established role of aspartate aminotransferase/alanine transaminase (AST/ALT) ratio in predicting cancer prognosis, we sought to identify whether the pre-treatment AST/ALT ratio has the potential to serve as a prognostic factor for NSCLC patients receiving ICIs-nonRT and iRT., Materials and Methods: We retrospectively analyzed NSCLC patients who received immunotherapy between April 2018 and March 2021. Patients were classified into iRT group and ICIs-nonRT group and further classified based on AST/ALT ratio cut-off values. The Kaplan-Meier (KM) method estimated the time-to-event endpoints (progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS)., Results: Of the cohort, 239 underwent ICIs-nonRT and 155 received iRT. Higher AST/ALT ratios correlated with worse outcomes in the ICIs-nonRT group but indicated better outcomes in those who received iRT. Multivariate analysis validated AST/ALT ratio as an independent prognostic factor. For AST/ALT ratios between 0.67-1.7, both ICIs-nonRT and iRT yielded similar treatment outcomes; with AST/ALT ratios greater than 1.7, iRT could be a more favorable treatment option ( P =0.038). Conversely, for ratios less than 0.67, ICIs-nonRT could be a more favorable treatment option ( P =0.073)., Conclusions: The pre-treatment AST/ALT ratio demonstrates potential as a prognostic marker for treatment outcomes in NSCLC patients receiving either ICIs-nonRT or iRT. Background & Aims: The search for integrative and natural therapies that favor homeostasis to boost sleep and diet quality took place for young adult populations as a non-pharmacological strategy for long-term good quality of life. Thus, the present pilot study aims to investigate the effects of 90-day consumption of a nutraceutical composition on the neuro-immune-endocrine axis, providing better sleep quality and health improvement., Methods: For this, from March 2021 to June 2021, twenty-two Brazilian young adult volunteers (women and men) with BMI between 18.5 and 34.9 kg/m 2 were divided into three distinct supplementation groups: NSupple; NSupple plus&#95;S, and NSupple plus. Briefly, the supplement compositions included yeast β-glucan, prebiotics, and minerals in different concentrations associated or not with the herbal medicine silymarin. Neither nutritional nor physical activity interventions were performed during this pilot study period. The anthropometrics measures, questionnaires answer data, and harvest blood for metabolic, inflammatory, and hormonal tests were collected at baseline time (day zero-T0) and day 90 (T90) post-supplementation., Results: Our results highlight that the supplementation reduced body mass index (BMI), Waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), waist circumference, AST/ALT ratio, alkaline phosphatase, and HbA1c. Post-supplementation the IL-6 and IL-10 levels and the sleep, humor, and quality of life scores were suggested to improve. The present study was conducted to assess the relationship between aspartate aminotransferase/ alanine aminotransferase (AST/ALT) ratio and pulse pressure in Korean adults with hypertension. Data from 1,515 adults from the sixth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES VI–3, 2015) were analyzed. There were several key findings in the present study. First, aspartate aminotransferase (odds ratio [OR], 1.018; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.002 to 1.033), alanine aminotransferase (OR, 0.982; 95% CI, 0.969 to 0.996), and aspartate aminotransferase/ alanine aminotransferase ratio (OR, 1.367; 95% CI, 1.027 to 1.819) were the independent factors determining high pulse pressure. Second, after adjusting for related variables [age, gender, smoking, alcohol consumption, regular exercise, total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TGs), high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), fasting plasma glucose (FPG), body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference (WC)], the ORs of high pulse pressure with the 1st quartile as a reference were significantly higher in the 4th quartile of aspartate aminotransferase/alanine aminotransferase ratio [1.632 (95% CI, 1.113∼2.393)]. The high pulse pressure was positively associated with aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase/alanine aminotransferase ratio in Korean adults with hypertension, but was inversely associated with alanine aminotransferase.

Background and Objectives: We aimed to assess the effect of AST/ALT ratio on echocardiographic and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMRI) parameters after COVID-19 patients recover. Materials and Methods: 87 patients with COVID-19 were included in the study. The patients were hospitalized with COVID-19 pneumonia, but the patients did not need intensive care unit follow-up or non-invasive mechanical ventilation support. After a discharge and two weeks following the positive swab test result, patients were considered eligible if they had any symptoms. Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) was performed within 24 h prior to CMRI. The median value of AST/ALT ratio was found, and the study population was divided into two subgroups based on the median AST/ALT ratio value. The clinical features, blood test, TTE and CMRI results were compared between subgroups. Results: C-reactive protein, D-dimer and fibrinogen were found to be significantly higher in patients with high AST/ALT ratio. LVEF, TAPSE, S’, and FAC were significantly lower in patients with high AST/ALT ratio. LV-GLS were significantly lower in patients with high AST/ALT ratio. In CMRI, native T1 mapping signal, native T2 mapping signal and extracellular volume raised significantly in patients with high AST/ALT ratio. Right ventricle stroke volume and right ventricle ejection fraction were significantly lower in patients with high AST/ALT ratio, but right ventricle end systolic volume was significantly higher in patients with high AST/ALT ratio. Conclusion: High AST/ALT ratio is related to impaired right ventricular function parameters with CMRI and echocardiography after recovery from acute COVID-19. Assessment of AST/ALT ratio at hospital admission may be used to assess the risk of cardiac involvement in COVID-19 disease, and these patients may require closer follow-up during and after the course of COVID-19.

Low serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activity and high aspartate aminotransferase (AST)/ALT ratio may be associated with high mortality in the elderly. We aimed to confirm this in an 8-year retrospective cohort study. Clinical data for 5958 people living in a city aged 67–104 years were analyzed for their relationships with all-cause mortality using artificial intelligence (AI) and conventional statistical analysis. In total, 1413 (23.7%) participants died during the study. Auto-AI analysis with five rounds of cross-validation showed that AST/ALT ratio was the third-largest contributor to mortality, following age and sex. Serum albumin concentration and body mass index were the fourth- and fifth-largest contributors. However, when serum ALT and AST were individually considered in the same model, the individual serum ALT and AST activities were the seventh- and tenth-largest contributors. Conventional survival analysis showed that ALT, AST, and AST/ALT ratio as continuous variables were all associated with mortality (adjusted hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals): 0.98 (0.97–0.99), 1.02 (1.02–1.03), and 1.46 (1.32–1.62), respectively; all p < 0.0001). In conclusion, both AI and conventional analysis suggest that of the conventional biochemical markers, high AST/ALT ratio is most closely associated with all-cause mortality in the elderly. Hepatitis C is an infectious disease that affects more than 70 million people worldwide, even killing 400 thousand of them annually. To better understand this disease and its prognosis, medical doctors can take advantage of the electronic health records (EHRs) of patients, which contain data that computer-based approaches built on statistics and computational intelligence can process to unveil new discoveries and trends otherwise unnoticeable by physicians. In this study, we analyze EHRs of 540 healthy controls and 75 patients diagnosed with hepatitis C, and use machine learning classifiers to predict their diagnosis. We employ the top classifier (Random Forests) to detect the most diagnostic variables for hepatitis C, that result being aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT). These two enzyme levels are also employed by physicians in the AST/ALT ratio, a traditional measure commonly employed in gastroenterology and hepatology. We apply the same approach to a validation dataset of 123 patients with hepatitis C and cirrhosis, and the same two variables arose as most relevant. We therefore compared our approach with the AST/ALT ratio, and noticed that our two-features ensemble learning model outperforms the traditional AST/ALT ratio on both datasets. Our results confirm the usefulness of ensemble machine learning for hepatitis C and cirrhosis diagnosis prediction. Moreover, our discoveries can have an impact on clinical practice, helping physicians predict diagnoses of patients at risk of hepatitis C and cirrhosis more precisely.

Background/purpose of the study: If non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) frequency is very high in stroke patients, NAFLD may be a risk factor for stroke and identifying factors of NAFLD presence may lead to stroke prevention. This retrospective study aimed to investigate whether NAFLD frequency was very high and identify factors associated with NAFLD presence at acute stroke admission. Methods: We included stroke patients aged 40 − 79 years who (1) were admitted from 2016 to 2019, within 24 h of onset; (2) underwent abdominal ultrasonography; and (3) underwent blood examination of biomarkers. We evaluated the frequency and significant factors of NAFLD presence. Results: Among 1672 stroke patients, 676 patients met our inclusion criteria, and 267 patients (39.5%) had NAFLD. Compared to patients without NAFLD, patients with NAFLD were young; had high anthropometric values; high blood pressure; low aspartate aminotransferase/alanine aminotransferase ratio (AST/ALT) ratio; high levels of liver enzymes, serum albumin, HbA1c, and serum lipids; low-density lipoprotein; high serum level of some fatty acids; and high fatty acid% of palmitic acid (PA) and dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid (DGLA). After excluding variables with multicollinearity, independent NAFLD-presence factors were high body mass index (BMI), low AST/ALT ratio, high serum albumin level, high PA%, and high DGLA level. Conclusions: The frequency of NAFLD was high in our patient group. Significant NAFLD-presence factors were high BMI, low AST/ALT ratio, high serum albumin level, high PA%, and high DGLA level. • The predominant serum transaminase in the active phase is ALT in anti-HMGCR myopathy, and AST in anti-SRP myopathy. • The difference in the pattern of serum transaminase elevation cannot be attributed to disease duration. • There are also differences in ESR, total cholesterol, and HDL between anti-HMGCR myopathy and anti-SRP myopathy. Autoantibodies against 3‑hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA reductase (HMGCR) and the signal recognition particle (SRP) are representative antibodies causing immune-mediated necrotizing myopathies (IMNM), called as anti-HMGCR and anti-SRP myopathies, respectively. Here, we analyzed the differences in routine blood test results between 56 anti-HMGCR and 77 anti-SRP myopathy patients. A higher alanine transaminase (ALT) level and a lower aspartate transaminase (AST)/ALT ratio were observed in anti-HMGCR myopathy patients [ALT, 265.7 ± 213.3 U/L (mean ± standard deviation); AST/ALT ratio, 0.88 ± 0.32] than in anti-SRP-myopathy patients (ALT, 179.3 ± 111.2 U/L, p < 0.05; AST/ALT ratio, 1.28 ± 0.40, p < 0.01). In the active phase, anti-HMGCR myopathy often showed ALT predominance, whereas anti-SRP myopathy often showed AST predominance. In addition, there were differences in erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), total cholesterol (TChol) level, and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) level between anti-HMGCR and anti-SRP myopathies (ESR: HMGCR, 24.4 ± 20.8 mm/1 h; SRP, 35.7 ± 26.7 mm/1 h, p = 0.0334; TChol: HMGCR, 226.7 ± 36.6 mg/dL; SRP, 207.6 ± 40.8 mg/dL, p = 0.0163; HDL: HMGCR, 58.4 ± 13.9 mg/dL; SRP, 46.2 ± 17.3 mg/dL, p < 0.01). Background: Sarcopenia is an age-related and skeletal muscle disorder involving the loss of muscle mass or strength, and physiological function. Although the diagnostic indicators used in the different guidelines are for muscle mass, strength and physical performance, there are currently no uniform diagnostic criteria. Therefore, we aimed to explore the relationship between a series of biomarkers with sarcopenia in southwest China. Methods: We included 4302 patients from West China Health and Aging Trend (WCHAT) study. Sarcopenia was defined according to the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia: 2019 Consensus Update on Sarcopenia Diagnosis and Treatment. Thyroxine、albumin、total protein、prealbumin、albumin to globulin ratio (A/G)、25(OH)VD、fasting insulin、adrenal cortisol、triglyceride、high-density lipoprotein、hemoglobin and aspartate aminotransferase to alanine aminotransferase ratio (AST/ALT) were measured. The receiver operating characteristic curves (ROC) were established to describe the predictive value for sarcopenia and we also used multivariate logistic regression analysis to identify risk factors of the disease. Results: In terms of protein state, patients with sarcopenia had lower value in total protein, albumin, prealbumin, A/G than the control (P <0.001). Patients had lower value in triglyceride but higher value in high-density lipoprotein compared with the healthy in the indicators of lipid metabolism (P <0.001). In the aspect of hormone state, patients had lower free triiodothyronine, fasting insulin but higher free tetraiodothyronine and adrenal cortisol than the healthy (P <0.001). The fasting insulin level (AUC=0.686) and the AST/ALT ratio (AUC=0.682) were the best predictors of sarcopenia among biomarkers. The diagnostic performance of fasting insulin combined with the AST/ALT ratio (AUC=0.720) is equal to multiple indicators (AUC=0.742). Hepatitis B viral (HBV) load and hepatic enzymes play a critical role in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) development. However, the clinical significance of these in HBV‐related HCC patients after hepatectomy remains unclear. In this study, we analysed 1,940 HBV‐related HCC patients who underwent hepatectomy from four hospitals in west China. Risk classification was constructed based on baseline HBV‐DNA load and AST/ALT ratio. Based on the HBV‐DNA load and AST/ALT ratio classification, four types with distinguishable prognoses were established. Type 1 patients had the best prognosis with 5‐year overall survival (OS) of 69.8%, followed by type 2 and type 3 patients, whereas type 4 patients had the worst prognosis with 5‐year OS of 42.7%. Similarly, the four types had statistically different recurrence‐free survival. This classification was significantly associated with HCC recurrence (hazard ratio [HR]:1.492, p <.001) and long‐term survival (HR: 1.574, p =.001). Pathologically, type 4 correlated with more advanced tumours considering tumour size and microvascular invasion than those in type 1, 2, or 3. Moreover, type 4 patients had more severe hepatic inflammation in underlying liver. Conversely, type 1 patients had an active tumour immune microenvironment as indicated by more CD8+ T cell infiltration and less PD‐L1 expression. Previous studies reported that the aspartate aminotransferase (AST) to alanine aminotransferase (ALT) ratio (AST/ALT) was a risk factor in cardiovascular disease. Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is an important risk factor for cardiovascular death. However, only a few studies investigated the correlations between the AST/ALT ratio and PAD. We analyzed data from 10 900 patients with hypertension from the Chinese Hypertension Registry Study; 350 patients had PAD (prevalence 3.2%). After adjusting for potential confounders, the AST/ALT ratio was independently and positively associated with risk of PAD (OR: 1.31, 95% CI, 1.13-1.59), and a significant increased risk of PAD for the third AST/ALT ratio tertile (T3) compared with the first tertile (T1; OR: 1.49, 95% CI, 1.09-2.04, P trend =.005) was found. Moreover, when we combined T1 and T2 into one group and used it as a reference group, the risk of PAD increased with the increase in AST/ALT; the risk ratio was 1.52 (95% CI, 1.20-1.95). A higher AST/ALT ratio (≥1.65) was associated with PAD risk in Chinese adults with hypertension. Our results suggest that the AST/ALT ratio may help identify patients at high risk of vascular end points and might be a convenient, economical, and effective tool for evaluating the risk of atherosclerosis. Abstract Background To investigate the effect of serum aspartate transaminase/alanine transaminase (AST/ALT) on the risk of prostate cancer. Methods A total of 404 patients undergoing prostate biopsy from April 2016 to July 2019 were enrolled. One hundred and ninety‐four patients with prostatic cancer (PCa) were diagnosed by pathology. Two hundred and ten patients were diagnosed with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Multivariate logistic regression was used to analyze the effect of AST/ALT ratio and other factors on the incidence of PCa. Result AST/ALT ratio was significantly higher in PCa than in BPH patients (OR 2.313, 95%CI 1.337‐4.003, P = .002). BackgroundSarcopenia is an age-related and skeletal muscle disorder involving the loss of muscle mass or strength, and physiological function. Although the diagnostic indicators used in the different guidelines are for muscle mass, strength and physical performance, there are currently no uniform diagnostic criteria. Therefore, we aimed to explore the relationship between a series of biomarkers with sarcopenia in southwest China.MethodsWe included 4302 patients from West China Health and Aging Trend (WCHAT) study. Objective: The study was carried out to evaluate the role of the AST (Aspartate transaminase)/ALT (Alanine transaminase) ratio as an indicator of the functional severity in people with chronic heart failure (CHF) with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction., Methods: A prospective cross-sectional study was conducted in a tertiary care centre in South India among the individuals who had left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) of ≤40 %. The study period was between January 2021 and December 2021. Consecutive patients with the criteria were enrolled in the study. Study participants were grouped based on their AST/ALT ratio value (ratio<1 and ratio≥1)., Results: In present study of 100 participants, there was a statistically significant difference between two groups with respect to ALT, AST/ALT ratio, and ALP (Alkaline phosphatase). There was a significant correlation between the APRI (AST to platelet ratio index) and FIB-4 (Fibrosis-4) with AST/ALT ratio. Diagnostic analysis of AST/ALT ratio to predict the severity of CHF with reduced EF, the area under the curve (AUC) was 0.547 (p-value = 0.5654) with a 95 % confidence interval of 0.299-0.795 with an optimal cut-off value of 0.6, sensitivity of 96.70 %, and specificity of 33.33 %., Conclusion: The AST/ALT ratio is increased in patients with CHF patients with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction. Tetracycline is a drug with direct cytotoxic action on the liver, and therefore it is widely used in pharmaceutical studies of therapeutic effectiveness of hepatoprotective preparations. The aim of the present work was to determine the biochemical indicators in blood plasma of rats with tetracycline-induced hepatosis and correction properties of milk phospholipids under tetracycline-induced hepatosis in rats. To achieve this, Wistar rats were administered 250 mg/kg of 4% tetracycline hydrochloride suspension once a day intragastrically. As the corrective therapy, 1% solution of BAS “FLP-MD” was administered in liposomal form based on milk phospholipids. Under modeled steatohepatitis, significant destructive changes were observed in the cell membranes of hepatocytes in experimental rats. It was confirmed by higher activity of transaminase (in particular, activity of АSТ increased 4 times, that of ALT 1.7 times and the AST/ALT ratio was increased 2.4 times in blood plasma). The synthesis of clotting factors in livers of animals with hepatosis was inhibited. The content of fibrinogen in blood plasma decreased by 21%, factor II (prothrombin) by 27.8%, Xa-factor by 27.9%, and protein C by 40.6%. The animals also had hypochromic anemia, azotemia and bilirubinemia. The calcium-phosphor metabolism and hyperkalemia were observed. The liposomal BAS “FLP-MD” based on milk phospholipids diminished harmful effects of tetracycline, in particular supporting blood coagulation factors’ level restoration, and also by the activity of transaminases. According to the results, it may be used in prophylactics and pharmaceutical correction of steatohepatitis.

Low serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activity and high aspartate aminotransferase (AST)/ALT ratio may be associated with high mortality in the elderly. We aimed to confirm this in an 8-year retrospective cohort study. Clinical data for 5958 people living in a city aged 67–104 years were analyzed for their relationships with all-cause mortality using artificial intelligence (AI) and conventional statistical analysis. In total, 1413 (23.7%) participants died during the study. Auto-AI analysis with five rounds of cross-validation showed that AST/ALT ratio was the third-largest contributor to mortality, following age and sex. Serum albumin concentration and body mass index were the fourth- and fifth-largest contributors. However, when serum ALT and AST were individually considered in the same model, the individual serum ALT and AST activities were the seventh- and tenth-largest contributors. Conventional survival analysis showed that ALT, AST, and AST/ALT ratio as continuous variables were all associated with mortality (adjusted hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals): 0.98 (0.97–0.99), 1.02 (1.02–1.03), and 1.46 (1.32–1.62), respectively; all p < 0.0001). In conclusion, both AI and conventional analysis suggest that of the conventional biochemical markers, high AST/ALT ratio is most closely associated with all-cause mortality in the elderly.

Introduction An elevated ratio of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) to alanine aminotransferase (ALT) not only independently affects aging-related health but also plays a critical role in mortality. However, there is limited predictive data on all-cause mortality, particularly in the context of community-dwelling individuals in Japan. This study examined the association between the AST/ALT ratio and survival prognosis in a cohort study using two follow-up studies based on 19-year and 7-year intervals. Methods The study included 1,573 male (63 ± 14 years; range, 20-90 years) and 1,980 female participants (65 ± 12 years; range, 19-89 years). The participants were those involved in a Nomura cohort study conducted in 2002 (first cohort) and 2014 (second cohort) that continued to participate throughout the follow-up periods (follow-up rates were 90.3% and 97.4% for each cohort). A Cox proportional hazards model was adopted to calculate the multivariate-adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) of death from the baseline health check-up to the follow-up periods while controlling for potential confounding factors. Results The follow-up survey revealed that there were 473 male deaths (30.1% of total male participants) and 432 female deaths (21.8% of total female participants). The univariate Cox regression analysis showed that HRs for all-cause mortality were greater for participants in higher AST/ALT ratio quartiles ( p < 0.001). The multivariate Cox regression analysis with adjusted variables showed a significant association between those in the fourth AST/ALT ratio quartile (HR: 1.83, 95% confidence interval, 1.46-2.29) and the risk of all-cause mortality. This association holds irrespective of gender, age, and elevated gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase, particularly in the case of participants with a body mass index < 25 kg/m 2  without a history of cardiovascular disease or diabetes. An editorial is presented on the AST to ALT Ratio and Peripheral Arterial Disease in a Hypertensive Population. The article discusses that the association between the aspartate aminotransferase (AST) to alanine aminotransferase (ALT) ratio and the prevalence of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) in participants of the Chinese Hypertension Registry Study; and Cardiovascular (CV) risk factors (RFs) are associated with an increased risk for the development of arterial disease in vascular beds.

Multivariate linear regression analysis model and ROC curve showed that AST/ALT ratio could independently predict HFrEF functional severity with a best cut-off value of 0.9, sensitivity of 43.6%, and specificity of 81.4%. Background: The aspartate aminotransferase (AST)/alanine aminotransferase (ALT) ratio is suggested to be related to the increased risks of many metabolic diseases, whereas its association with neurological function in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has not been understood. In this study, we aim to investigate the relationships between serum liver enzymes (ALT, AST, the AST/ALT ratio, gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT)) and peripheral nerve function in patients with T2DM. Methods: In Group 1, we analyzed the associations between parameters of nerve function and liver enzymes in 460 T2DM patients from rural area of Shanghai. Besides, the same methods were applied to another group of 828 T2DM subjects from urban area of Shanghai. Results: In Group 1, the AST/ALT ratio was significantly higher in patients with abnormal nerve conduction (P = 0. 0 0 5). The peripheral nerve function significantly declined with increasing tertiles of AST/ALT ratio (P s < 0. 0 5). After adjustment for all potential confounders, the ratio of AST/ALT was still negatively correlated with the composite Z-scores of conduction velocity (CV). In Group 2, similar significant associations were found between the AST/ALT ratio and peripheral nerve function after adjustment for covariates. Conclusions: In two independent T2DM populations, the AST/ALT ratio was independently and consistently related to peripheral nerve function. Fragment merging approach was applied for the design of thiazole/thiazolidinone clubbed pyrazoline derivatives 5a-e, 6a-c , 7 and 10a-d as dual COX-2 and 5-LOX inhibitors. Compounds 5a, 6a, and 6b were the most potent and COX-2 selective inhibitors (IC 50 = 0.03–0.06 μM, SI = 282.7–472.9) with high activity against 5-LOX (IC 50 = 4.36–4.86 μM), while compounds 5b and 10a were active and selective 5-LOX inhibitors with IC 50 = 2.43 and 1.58 μM, respectively. In vivo assay and histopathological examination for most active candidate 6a revealed significant decrease in inflammation with higher safety profile in comparison to standard drugs. Compound 6a exhibited the same orientation and binding interactions as the reference COX-2 and 5-LOX inhibitors (celecoxib and quercetin, respectively). The outbreak of the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 epidemic has rapidly spread and still poses a serious threat to healthcare systems worldwide. In the present study, electronic medical records containing clinical indicators related to liver injury in 799 COVID-19-confirmed patients admitted to a hospital in Madrid (Spain) were extracted and analyzed. Correlation between liver injury and disease outcome was also evaluated. Serum levels of Alanine aminotransferase (ALT), Aspartate aminotransferase (AST), Gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT), Alkaline phosphatase (ALP), Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and AST/ALT ratio were elevated above the Upper Limit of Normal (ULN) in 25.73%, 49.17%, 34.62%, 24.21%, 55.84% and 75% of patients, respectively. Interestingly, significant positive correlation between LDH levels and the AST/ALT ratio with disease outcome was found. Our data showed that SARS-CoV-2 virus infection leads to mild, but significant changes in serum markers of liver injury. The upregulated LDH levels as well as AST/ALT ratios upon admission may be used as additional diagnostic characteristic for COVID-19 patients.

Objective To analyze the relationship between preoperative serum alanine aspartate aminotransferase /aminotransferase (AST/ALT) ratio and prognosis of patients with Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS). Methods Data of 280 patients with BCS admitted to the Affiliated Hospital of Xuzhou Medical University were retrospectively analyzed. The median value of AST/ALT ratio (0.75) was used for grouping. There were 142 cases in group AST/ALT ratio ≤ 0.75 and 138 cases in group AST/ALT ratio > 0.75. All patients underwent interventional surgery and followed up for at least 5 years. According to the recurrence of follow-up results, the relationship between preoperative serum AST / ALT levels and recurrence was analyzed retrospectively. Results There were significant differences in gender, Child-Pugh grade of liver function and recurrence rate between the two groups. The mean vascular patency time were 45 (37, 52) and 40 (21, 49) months for AST/ALT ratio ≤ 0.75 group and AST/ALT ratio >0.75 group. The mean vascular patency time was significantly shorter in AST/ALT ratio > 0.75 group than that of AST/ALT ratio ≤ 0.75 group (Z=2.159，P＜0.05). The cumulative patencyrates were 94.4%, 76.8% and 64.1%, respectively in AST/ALT ratio ≤0.75 group for 1, 3 and 5 years. The cumulative patency rates were 90.6%, 68.1% and 58.7% in AST/ALT ratio > 0.75 group for 1, 3 and 5 years, respectively. The 5-year cumulative patency rate was significantly lower in patients with AST/ALT>0.75 group than that of patients with AST/ALT≤ 0.75 group (Log-rank χ2=4.372，P＜0.05). Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that the liver function of Child-Pugh classification (C) patients were easy to relapse BCS. Conclusion AST/ALT ratio is associated with recurrence of BCS after interventional therapy. Child-Pugh classification of liver function is an independent risk factor for the prognosis of BCS.
