REMARKS The identified individuals could be assigned morphologically to Aporrectodea caliginosa meridionalis Bouché, 1972, which was cited from Corsica by Bouché (1972) together with Ap. caliginosa caliginosa. However, specimens collected in our study were found to be identical to the most widespread clone within lineage II of Aporrectodea trapezoides (Dugès, 1828) according to their COI sequence (Fernández et al. 2011). Our work therefore suggests a possible synonymy of Ap. caliginosa meridionalis and Ap. trapezoides, which will have to be confirmed in the future in the light of additional data. Background: Earthworms are considered as one of the ecologically important invertebrates with highly cryptic genetic diversity. Since the morphological methods of classification are unprecise, it is necessary to classify the species depending on molecular bases using PCR techniques. In addition, studying the effect of some agonists such as Sodium nitroprusside (SNP) and Norepinephrine (NE) on the smooth muscle of earthworm is yet poorly studied.

Accurately quantifying the soil nitrogen (N) supply in crop fields is essential for enabling environmentally sustainable and economically profitable crop production. It requires using field-based methods to account for the contribution of soil biota, including earthworms, to N mineralization in temperate agroecosystems. The direct contribution of earthworms to the soil N cycle is the N they release throughout their life and after death, and it can be estimated using the secondary production method. This study was conducted in 2014 and 2015 in two adjacent fields with annual corn-soybean rotation in Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue, Quebec, Canada. The cumulative biomass of Aporrectodea spp. in two no-till corn-soybean agroecosystems was determined, and the direct N flux from these earthworms was estimated during the corn and soybean phases of the rotation. Secondary production was estimated by sampling earthworms biweekly during April–June and September–November and inferring the change in earthworm biomass between sampling dates using a size frequency calculation. The N flux was calculated as the sum of the N released through excretion, during periods when earthworms were active, and from mortality. The secondary production of the Aporrectodea population was estimated to be 8–43 g ash-free dry weight m–2 year–1, and the N flux was 22–105 kg N ha–1 year–1. The N flux was higher at the early vegetative growth stage, which is a period of high N demand for corn. These findings suggest that refining the N fertilization recommendation by accounting for soil N supplied by earthworms could potentially reduce fertilizer costs and environmental N losses.

The application of decomposable organic residues such as manure and crop litter is generally beneficial to earthworms. There is an emerging interest in applying biochar, a carbonaceous product of pyrolysis, to temperate agricultural soils. The slow decomposition rate of biochar, which also contains ash and combustion byproducts, could be detrimental to earthworms. The objective of this study was to describe the earthworm populations in biochar-amended soils on a dairy farm in the St. Francis River watershed, Quebec, Canada. Earthworms were collected from replicated field plots under cereal production. Site A received three wood-based biochar types at two application rates (5 and 10 t ha-1 biochar) plus an unamended control, while Site B received wood-based biochar (7.5 t ha-1 biochar), dairy cattle slurry (10 t ha-1 manure), or a combination of the biochar and manure rates plus an unamended control. Earthworms were collected by hand sorting and formaldehyde expulsion from soil pits. Three species, Aporrectodea turgida, Aporrectodea tuberculata, and Lumbricus rubellus, were found at the sites, and Aporrectodea was the dominant genus. Biochar sources, rates, and application with dairy slurry did not affect the earthworm population, which had 52–218 individuals m-2 in 2010 and 4–96 individuals m-2 in 2011. The seasonal variation in earthworm population may be due to flooding in the spring of 2011, which apparently interfered with earthworm reproduction. The similarity in earthworm abundance and biomass in plots with and without wood-based biochar leads to the conclusion that earthworm populations are stable in biochar-amended soils in this cold, humid temperate region.

The complex interaction of a man and the environment requires the creation of algorithms for predict- ing the effects of anthropogenic impact. This requires the creation of the ecosystem models where all their basic elements and relationships are taken into account. One of the most effective methods for choosing the most informative differential elements of a system is the development and the implemen- tation of bio-indication models. Nowadays the important task is the development of the bio-indication methods for various anthropogenic complex effects. The electrical transmission lines carry out a specific integrated environmental impact. It is created on the changes in the environment under the influence of magnetic and electric fields and the long-term consequences of their interaction with ecosystem components. This effect is negative for the most representatives of biota and for earthworms in particular. We observe how the number of species de- creases, the species diversity reduces and the morphological parameters change towards species with a shorter body length under reaching the electrical transmission lines. Some genera of the earthworms are able to survive under the effects of the modern electrical transmis- sion lines, although this reflects their abundance and morphological parameters. These species include Aporrectodea caliginosa and Aporrectodea trapezoides. They can be used as diagnostic genera of impact of the electrical transmission lines on biota. They can be genera indicators for the determination of the effect of the electrical transmission lines. The presence of Lumbricus terrestris shows the low electrical transmission line effects, and the presence of Aporrectodea roseа or Aporrectodea longа shows low or moderate effects. We can create bioindication models according to the relations between groups of species of dominant and subdominant specimens formed by the body size. Under the condition of creating a wide data-base and establishing the vitality parameters, it is possible to develop more advanced and efficient algorithms for the synbioindicator analysis of the impact of the electrical transmission lines on the environment.

International audience; Diffuse pollution of the environment by pesticides has become a major soil threat to non-target organisms, such as earthworms for which declines have been reported. However some endogeic species are still abundant and persist in intensively cultivated fields, suggesting they become tolerant to long-term anthropogenic pressure. We thus considered the working hypothesis that populations of Aporrectodea caliginosa earthworms from conventionally managed fields developed a tolerance to pesticides compared with those from organically managed fields. To investigate this hypothesis, we studied earthworm populations of the same genetic lineage from soils that were either lowly or highly contaminated by pesticides to detect any constitutive expression of differentially expressed molecular pathways between these populations. Earthworm populations were then experimentally exposed to a fungicide-epoxiconazole-in the laboratory to identify different molecular responses when newly exposed to a pesticide. State-of-the-art omics technology (RNA sequencing) and bioinformatics were used to characterize molecular mechanisms of tolerance in a non-targeted way. Additional physiological traits (respirometry, growth, bioaccumulation) were monitored to assess tolerance at higher levels of biological organization. In the present study, we generated the de novo assembly transcriptome of A. caliginosa consisting of 64,556 contigs with N50 = 2862 pb. In total, 43,569 Gene Ontology terms were identified for 21,593 annotated sequences under the three main ontologies (biological processes, cellular components and molecular functions). Overall, we revealed that two same lineage populations of A. caliginosa earthworms, inhabiting similar pedo-climatic environment, have distinct gene expression pathways after they long-lived in differently managed agricultural soils with a contrasted pesticide exposure history for more than 22 years. The main difference was observed regarding metabolism, with upregulated pathways linked to proteolytic activities and the mitochondrial respiratory chain in the highly exposed population. This study improves our understanding of the long-term impact of chronic exposure of soil engineers to pesticide residues.

The methods of individual retention of earthworms in laboratory conditions have been developed considering their trophic specialization and ecological features. The results of investigation of the dynamic of cocoon production by apomictic and amphimictic representatives of the genus Aporrectodea with different types of reproduction are presented. It has been established that parthenogenetic species A.trapezoides has a higher reproductive potential that its parental diploid form A.caliginosa. This is evidenced by higher number of cocoons and juvenile worms during the growing season. The regularities of the influence of some abiotic factors on the features of animal reproduction have been revealed. It has been experimentally confirmed that seasonality is the main determinant of earthworms fertility.

Geographical parthenogenesis describes phenomenon when parthenogenetic hybrid forms or species have larger distribution areas or higher abundance than their amphimictic parental species, especially in climatically unfavorable conditions. This phenomenon was studied in Ukraine for the pair species of earthworms Aporrectodea сaliginosa (Savigny, 1826) s. l. We found that the hermaphroditic amphimictic A. caliginosa clearly predominates in the northern and western regions, and the apomictic parthenogenetic A. trapezoides (Duges, 1828) in the southern and eastern regions with a continental arid climate. In the sample sets of A. сaliginosa–A. trapezoides group, usually one of the species sharply predominated, and the equality of their abundance was very rare. The reason for this fact is both the alternative geographical distribution and the ability of A. trapezoides to form populations in habitats unfavorable for A. caliginosa. In general, the situation in this group agrees with the classical model of geographic parthenogenesis and confirms the high adaptive potential of apomictic organisms. This fact once again raises the question of non-adaptive reasons for the exclusion of the apomictic reproduction in highly organized animals.
