The timing and pattern of biotic recovery after the Late Ordovician Mass Extinction (LOME) are highly controversial. Here, we conducted a systematic investigation on ichnofossils from the lower Silurian succession of the northwestern Hunan province, middle-upper Yangtze Block, South China. Biotic recovery of marine benthic ecosystems after the LOME was analysed and discussed for the first time using multiple ichnofossil proxies. The vertical distribution and evolutional trends of trace fossil assemblages suggest that biotic recovery was significantly delayed by the widespread anoxia during the latest Hirnantian to middle Aeronian. The recovery displays a stepwise pattern and reached a relatively high stage during the late Aeronian, although a full recovery was generally not achieved during this interval as proposed elsewhere before. There is a sharp decrease in all trace fossil proxies across the Aeronian-Telychian boundary, indicating a resetting of biotic recovery back to initial stages, most likely linked to a re-onset of anoxia in shallow marine settings during the late Aeronian Event. Subsequent recovery generally followed the patterns of late Aeronian, but was hampered by a low nutrient supply during early Telychian. The spread of marine anoxia is believed to have played a key role in the development of the SPICE (Steptoean Positive Carbon Isotope Excursion) event and the end-Marjuman extinction in the late Cambrian (∼497.5 m.y. ago), but their cause-and-effect relationship is poorly constrained. Here we present an integrated analysis of carbonate δ13C, cerium anomalies (Ce/Ce*), and genus-level diversity data of trilobites from the North China Platform. Our results show tightly coupled changes between the SPICE, an increase in Ce/Ce*, and a trilobite turnover event, which we interpret as indicating enhanced productivity and organic remineralization, leading to the development of low-oxygen conditions in shallowwater settings. This study therefore establishes a direct link between local ecological stress and trilobite turnover during the global SPICE event. Furthermore, the presence of low-oxygen rather than fully anoxic conditions during the peak of the SPICE event could explain the nature of the end-Marjuman crisis, which was characterized by the replacement of shallowwater fauna by deeper-water counterparts that were potentially more tolerant of hypoxia. The Yongle blue hole (YBH), situated in the South China Sea, represents a compelling subject of study in marine microbiology due to its unique redoxlayered microbial ecosystems. However, the diversity and ecology of microbial eukaryotes within the YBH remains underexplored. This study endeavors to bridge this gap through the application of the in situ microbial filtration and fixation (ISMIFF) device to collect 0.22-30 µm microbial samples from 21 water layers of YBH. Subsequent extraction of 18S rRNA metagenomic reads of 21 metagenomes and 10 metatranscriptomes facilitated a comprehensive analysis of community structures. Findings revealed a pronounced superiority in the diversity and richness of eukaryotic microorganisms in the oxic zone compared to its suboxic and anoxic counterparts. Notably, Dinophyceae and Maxillopoda emerged as the predominant taxa based on the analysis of the 18S rRNA reads for the V4 and V9 regions, which showed stratification In their relative abundance and suggested their potential role in the thermohalocline boundaries and oxic-anoxic interface. Specifically, In these eukaryotic microbial communities, Dinophyceae exhibited significant abundance at 20 m (20.01%) and 105 m (26.13%) water depths, while Maxillopoda was prevalent at 40 m (22.84%), 80 m (23.19%), and 100 m (15.42%) depths. A part of these organisms, identified as larvae and protists, were likely attracted by swarming chemosynthetic bacterial prey prevailing at the thermo-halocline boundaries and oxic-anoxic interface. Furthermore, the phylogenetic relationships of the major 18S operational taxonomic units (OTUs) showed a close adjacency to known species, except for three Dinophyceae OTUs. In conclusion, this study provides critical insights into the vertical distribution and transcriptional activity of <30-µm eukaryotic microbes, shedding light on the taxonomic novelty of eukaryotic microorganisms within the semi-enclosed blue holes. Groundwater aquifers are ecological hotspots with diverse microbes essential for biogeochemical cycles. Their ecophysiology has seldom been studied on a basin scale. In particular, our knowledge of chemosynthesis in the deep aquifers where temperatures reach 60 °C, is limited. Here, we investigated the diversity, activity, and metabolic potential of microbial communities from nine wells reaching ancient groundwater beneath Israel's Negev Desert, spanning two significant, deep (up to 1.5 km) aquifers, the Judea Group carbonate and Kurnub Group Nubian sandstone that contain fresh to brackish, hypoxic to anoxic water. We estimated chemosynthetic productivity rates ranging from 0.55 ± 0.06 to 0.82 ± 0.07 µg C L−1 d−1 (mean ± SD), suggesting that aquifer productivity may be underestimated. We showed that 60% of MAGs harbored genes for autotrophic pathways, mainly the Calvin–Benson–Bassham cycle and the Wood–Ljungdahl pathway, indicating a substantial chemosynthetic capacity within these microbial communities. We emphasize the potential metabolic versatility in the deep subsurface, enabling efficient carbon and energy use. This study set a precedent for global aquifer exploration, like the Nubian Sandstone Aquifer System in the Arabian and Western Deserts, and reconsiders their role as carbon sinks. The Early Cambrian represents a critical time period characterized by extraordinary biological innovations and dynamic redox conditions in seawaters. Nitrogen isotopic signatures of ancient sediments have the potential to elucidate the evolutionary path of marine redox states and the biogeochemical nitrogen cycle within the water column of the Early Cambrian ocean. While existing research on this topic has predominantly focused on South China, the exploration of other continental margins has been limited, leaving contradictory hypotheses untested. In this study, paired δ15N and δ13Corg analyses were performed on the Lower Cambrian successions from the Shiairike section (inner ramp) and Well Tadong 2 (deep shelf/basin) in the northwestern and eastern Tarim Basin, respectively. Our data from the Shiairike section reveal a discernible shift in the operation of different nitrogen cycles for the black chert-shale unit, also referred to as the black rock series in Chinese literature, of the Yurtus Formation (Fortunian stage to lower Stage 3). Oscillating δ15N values for its lower part are suggestive of alternating anaerobic assimilation of NH4+ and denitrification/anammox. This is likely attributed to a shallow, unstable chemocline consistent with the upwelling and incursion of deep, anoxic waters during a major transgression. In contrast, aerobic nitrogen cycling, indicated by positive δ15N values of >2‰, dominated the upper part alongside a reduction in upwelling intensity. On the other hand, the δ15N signatures of Xishanbulake and Xidashan Formations of Well Tadong 2, which encompass a time interval from the Cambrian Fortunian Age to Age 4, are indicative of N2 fixation by diazotrophs as the major nitrogen source. The two studied intervals, although not time-equivalent, exhibit separated states of nitrogen cycling at least during the deposition of the Yurtus black rock series. The spatially different nitrogen cycling of the studied sections is compatible with a redox-stratified ocean during the deposition of the Yurtus black rock series. The build-up of a NO3− reservoir and aerobic nitrogen cycling in seawater was largely restricted to near-shore settings whereas anaerobic nitrogen cycling dominated by N2 fixation served as the main nitrogen uptake pathway in off-shore settings. Global climatic and palaeogeographical changes generated a siliciclastic–carbonate system with high organic matter accumulations in a shallow sea during the lower Permian in Western Gondwana. The 60 m thick mixed siliciclastic–carbonate succession (Irati Formation and the base of the Serra Alta Formation) from the Paraná Basin represents a singular record of the interplay between carbonate production and siliciclastic input, providing a window of opportunity to integrate large‐scale depositional architecture with facies and geochemical analyses. The detailed study of cores supported by outcrop columnar sections revealed a siliciclastic‐dominated, retrogradational to aggradational facies, and a carbonate‐dominated, mixed aggradational to progradational facies composing three depositional sequences that record an outer‐ramp and mid to upper‐ramp. An integrated approach based on the description of facies and microfacies, organic geochemistry and mineralogical composition, indicated high‐frequency palaeoenvironmental changes during the evolution of this restricted basin. Climate changes, resulting in humid and dry phases, produced ideal conditions for high organic matter production and dolomite formation. The high organic matter production (humid phases) in addition to the restricted condition was responsible for the anoxic bottom waters that were widespread due to the low angle and homoclinal platform. Nutrient‐rich freshwater inflows in the anoxic and hypersaline restricted basin created a density‐stratified water column causing low‐salinity surface and anoxic bottom water, which allowed planktonic life, typical of lakes, such Botryococcus braunii, to flourish in the photic zone and sulphur bacteria to populate below the chemocline. Microbial activity induced primary dolomite precipitation (dry phases) and widespread formation of synsedimentary dolostone. Freshwater inflow and marine incursions are reflected in the organic matter accumulation (kerogen types I and II, respectively), generating bituminous shale with high total organic carbon (5 to 27 wt.%). Iron speciation has emerged as a robust proxy for discerning oceanic redox conditions; nonetheless, it is subject to certain limitations. Specifically, the applicability of the degree of pyritization is contingent upon the presence of unequivocal evidence of an anoxic water column and its discriminatory capacity is limited to distinguish between ferruginous (anoxic) and euxinic conditions. This study highlights that through the integration of redox‐sensitive trace metal enrichment data with Fe‐speciation data, the depositional redox conditions for marine sediments can be established with greater certainty. Recently, a set of dedicated geological reference materials (BHW and WHIT) have been developed for validating the Fe‐speciation analytical results for redox reconstruction studies; however, to the best of our knowledge, these reference materials are not characterized for trace and rare earth elements (REEs). In this connection, the BHW (oxic) and WHIT (anoxic) reference materials are measured for major, trace and REEs. After careful statistical considerations for these reference standards, a complete set of trace and REEs is reported. Furthermore, considering BHW and WHIT as oxic and anoxic end‐members, respectively, the utility of trace metal enrichment and Fe‐speciation data in combination has been discussed. The trace and REE concentrations of BHW and WHIT reported in this study will enhance their applicability as a reference material to understand ocean chemistry and the oxidation state of the ancient oceans. Euxinia, a crucial geological condition, usually signifies more severe extinction events attributed to deoxygenation in Earth's history. Despite extensive exploration of various proxies in paleoredox studies, most are primarily utilized to reconstruct atmospheric pO2, the proportion of anoxic water relative to the entire basin, and broader trends in redox states. Few, however, hold the capacity to precisely delineate local euxinia within confined areas. To address this gap and gain insights into the temporal and spatial extent of benthic euxinia, we propose leveraging the synergistic analysis of total nitrogen isotopes (δ15NTN) and pyrite sulfur isotopes (δ34Spy). Our study focuses on the Triassic Chang 7 Member from the Yanchang Formation, Ordos Basin, North China. Through coupling the δ15NTN and δ34Spy systematics on 11 drill cores within the Ordos Basin, we reconstruct the temporal and spatial distribution of the benthic euxinia zone during the Chang‐7 period. Our results suggest strong spatial heterogeneity of benthic redox conditions, with the euxinia boundary shifting from the central lake to the southwestern sections. Moreover, we identify redox‐controlling factors, including organic carbon loading, water depth, and potential water circulation, and evaluate their interplay with benthic euxinia. Furthermore, the discernment of water circulation patterns may provide an innovative approach to restore the paleowind direction. These findings highlight the effectiveness of coupling δ15NTN and δ34Spy in reconstructing the local benthic redox landscape of benthic environments, and enrich our understanding of biogeochemical processes. Plain Language Summary: Understanding past oxygen levels in Earth's waters is crucial for tracing its evolution and habitability. Euxinia, marked by severe deoxygenation, is a key indicator of environmental conditions. While a series of proxies have been used, only a handful of them are applicable to local euxinia identification, especially for lake systems that may possess unique thresholds, complicating the investigation of their biogeochemical processes. The coupling of nitrogen‐sulfur isotopes is innovatively raised to distinguish local bottom euxinia from more oxic (i.e., non‐euxinic) settings. The reconstructed redox landscape of the Triassic Ordos Basin exhibits strong spatiotemporal diversity. The temporal evolution is mainly controlled by water depth, while the spatial heterogeneous euxinia distribution is probably dominated by water circulation, mainly influenced by paleowinds at the surface of lake water. These deductions align with geochemical, tectonic, and sedimentological observations, such as ancient topography of the basin and thickness distribution of tuff layers. These findings put forward a unique window for identifying local euxinia and investigating paleowind orientation. The Devonian-Carboniferous (D-C; 359 Ma) boundary is marked by widespread deposition of organic-matter-rich black shales associated with the Hangenberg mass extinction event. The Exshaw Formation spans the D-C boundary in the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin (WCSB) and includes the basal Exshaw Shale deposited under broadly anoxic waters. The sediments at the base of the Exshaw Shale were deposited synchronously during a transgressive event across the WCSB, spanning the geographic variability of the basin. The variable Corg content of the shale was affected by local nutrient upwelling and paleotectonic features impacting water depth and circulation. To characterize the link between paleogeography and nutrient cycling, geographic (N = 20 locations) and stratigraphic (N = 6 locations) trends of δ13^^ and δ15^^ were examined throughout the WCSB, representing a range of depositional settings. The δ15^^ values range between 0.0 and 6.3%" and δ13^^ from -29.5 to -26.8%. Phytoplankton production in focused upwelling zones acquired a relatively 15N-depleted signature through isotopic fractionation during nutrient assimilation, and the residual nutrient pool was 15N-enriched. The advection of surface waters away from the location of upwelling supported additional phytoplankton growth and the deposition of sediments with higher δ1^ values. The stratigraphic sections include black laminated and burrowed mudrock sequences that record changes in paleoredox conditions, water depth, and tectonism over time. Up-core from the base of the Exshaw, the Corg content decreases and simultaneously δ15^^ increases, suggesting a decrease in eutrophic conditions. The present work, which has been carried out in the framework of EEA project BLUE-GREENWAY, is a contribution to the study of the evolution of hypoxia/ anoxia in Aitoliko lagoon, Greece. The study area suffers from anoxia which is a very important environmental problem lately mainly due to anthropogenic activities. Unpublished data from two measurement campaigns (2013–2014, 2023) have been used, and a 3D ocean model (SINMOD) has been configured for the region, that couples hydrodynamics, biochemistry and ecology. The analysis of model results includes monthly, annual and interannual variability of fields of dissolved oxygen, temperature, salinity, density, currents and wind as well as Brunt-Väisala frequency and Richardson number. Main results concerning oxygen are: a) the lagoon shows anoxic behavior at 5–7 m depth with a seasonal dependence, b) the seasonal variability in the upper water column with deeper ventilation during winter when the surface stratification is weaker than that during summer, c) anoxic water is reaching the surface of the lagoon for a short period of time. The release of phosphorous (P) via chemical weathering is a vital process that regulates the global cycling of numerous key elements and shapes the size of the Earth's biosphere. It has long been postulated that global climate should theoretically play a prominent role in governing P weathering rates. Yet, there is currently a lack of direct evidence for this relationship based on empirical data at the global scale. Here, using a compilation of temperature and P content data of global surface soils (0 to 30 cm), we demonstrate that P release does enhance at high mean annual surface temperatures. We propose that this amplification of nutrient supply with warming is a critical component of Earth's natural thermostat, and that this relationship likely caused expanded oceanic anoxia during past climate warming events. The potential acceleration of phosphorus loss from soils due to anthropogenic climate warming may pose threats to agricultural production, terrestrial and marine ecosystems, and alter marine redox landscapes. The Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event (T-OAE; ~183 Mya) was a globally significant carbon-cycle perturbation linked to widespread deposition of organic-rich sediments, massive volcanic CO2 release, marine faunal extinction, sea-level rise, a crisis in carbonate production related to ocean acidification, and elevated seawater temperatures. Despite recognition of the T-OAE as a potential analog for future ocean deoxygenation, current knowledge on the severity of global ocean anoxia is limited largely to studies of the trace element and isotopic composition of black shales, which are commonly affected by local processes. Here, we present the first carbonate-based uranium isotope (δ238U) record of the T-OAE from open marine platform limestones of the southeastern Tethys Ocean as a proxy for global seawater redox conditions. A significant negative δ238U excursion (~0.4‰) is recorded just prior to the onset of the negative carbon isotope excursion comprised within the T-OAE, followed by a long-lived recovery of δ238U values, thus confirming that the T-OAE represents a global expansion of marine anoxia. Using a Bayesian inverse isotopic mass balance model, we estimate that anoxic waters covered ~6 to 8% of the global seafloor during the peak of the T-OAE, which represents 28 to 38 times the extent of anoxia in the modern ocean. These data, combined with δ238U-based estimates of seafloor anoxic area for other CO2-driven Phanerozoic OAEs, suggest a common response of ocean anoxia to carbon release, thus improving prediction of future anthropogenically induced ocean deoxygenation. In the Eastern Tropical North Pacific Oxygen Minimum Zone (ETNP‐OMZ), fish larvae undergo development amidst highly variable dissolved oxygen environments. As OMZs expand, understanding the implications of low‐oxygen environments on fish development becomes increasingly relevant for fisheries management and ecosystem modeling. Using horizontal zooplankton tows to track five oxygen levels (oxic [200 μmol/kg], hypoxic [100 μmol/kg] suboxic [10 μmol/kg], anoxic [<1 μmol/kg], and deep [10 μmol/kg at ~ 1000 m depth]), this study analyzed the three‐dimensional distribution of fish larvae and adults across the ETNP‐OMZ. Results revealed a wide midwater anoxic core, extending from Costa Rica to Baja California, that was almost devoid of fish larvae (< 1 larvae/1000 m3). Early larval stages primarily inhabited the oxic and hypoxic levels above the core, while postflexion and transformation stages occurred across a wider oxygen gradient, including the deep level below the anoxic core. Epipelagic species (e.g., Auxis sp.) were predominantly found in the surface oxic level, whereas coastal‐demersal species (e.g., Bregmaceros bathymaster, Ophidion spp.) were prevalent in the hypoxic level above the core. Meso‐bathypelagic species (e.g., Diogenichthys laternatus, Cyclothone spp.) were present throughout the study area, including below the anoxic core as transformation larvae and juveniles. These findings indicate that a vertical expansion of anoxic waters in OMZs could further constrain the habitat of epipelagic species, while also affecting the ontogenic vertical movements of meso‐bathypelagic species. This study investigates enclosed water bodies to understand the intricate interactions among physical, chemical, and biological processes. A one-dimensional model, integrating sediment and ecosystem components, was developed to analyze oxygen depletion, nutrient dynamics, and the influence of sediment organic matter on oxygen concentrations due to stratification. Oxygen and nutrient concentrations were derived by combining results from a one-dimensional vertical diffusion model with the ecosystem model. The dissolution, adsorption, and desorption of inorganic substances in bottom mud react differently under anaerobic and aerobic conditions, necessitating separate formulations for reduction and oxidation reactions in the bottom mud model. In Lake Biwa, Japan's largest lake, dissolved oxygen levels have decreased despite regulatory efforts since the 1970s, prompting an investigation into the causes of oxygen-depleted water masses. The model was thus applied to examine oxygen consumption in Lake Biwa's deep sediments, shedding light on anoxia in enclosed water bodies. This study emphasizes the significance of bottom sediments in water quality models and their implications for ecosystems. Lacustrine methane emissions are strongly mitigated by aerobic methane-oxidizing bacteria (MOB) that are typically most active at the oxic-anoxic interface. Although oxygen is required by the MOB for the first step of methane oxidation, their occurrence in anoxic lake waters has raised the possibility that they are capable of oxidizing methane further anaerobically. Here, we investigate the activity and growth of MOB in Lake Zug, a permanently stratified freshwater lake. The rates of anaerobic methane oxidation in the anoxic hypolimnion reached up to 0.2 µM d−1. Single-cell nanoSIMS measurements, together with metagenomic and metatranscriptomic analyses, linked the measured rates to MOB of the order Methylococcales. Interestingly, their methane assimilation activity was similar under hypoxic and anoxic conditions. Our data suggest that these MOB use fermentation-based methanotrophy as well as denitrification under anoxic conditions, thus offering an explanation for their widespread presence in anoxic habitats such as stratified water columns. Thus, the methane sink capacity of anoxic basins may have been underestimated by not accounting for the anaerobic MOB activity. The occurrence of aerobic methane-oxidizing bacteria in anoxic environments is puzzling, as oxygen is thought to be required for methane oxidation. Here, Schorn et al. show that the methane assimilation activity of these bacteria is similar under hypoxic and anoxic conditions in a stratified lake, and the bacteria use fermentation-based methanotrophy as well as denitrification under anoxic conditions. Taphonomy and paleoecology (biological behavior) of the Early Cretaceous fish fossils are poorly described. This study reports for the first time a detailed taphonomical and paleoecological study on Lycoptera in the Mesozoic strata of western Liaoning Province, NE China. The XRD analysis shows that gismondine is the dominant clay minerals that could have contributed to the preservation of Lycoptera fossils and microbial mat fragments in the fossil-bearing horizon. Gismondine may have formed under volcanism-related hydrothermal regime that was transformed from crystal and lithic fragments. The μ-XRF imaging analysis shows a dominant chemical composition of Al, Si, P, S, Rh, K, Ca, Ti, C, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, among which P, Ca, C and S are enriched in the fish skeleton in comparison to the matrix. This suggests a dominant apatite composition for the fish skeleton. Hydrothermal influence did not smear off these organic signals probably because of protection of gismondine. The coexistance of C and S with Ni is assumed to represent recovered primary productivity following volcanic explosions and toxic gas emissions. The head of juvenile fish stays close to the body of adult fish. Pending further discoveries, such phenomenon is interpreted to suggest that adult fish actively protected juvenile fish in the presence of environmental pressures such as anoxia and deterioration of water quality induced by volcanism. Ocean acidification and hypoxia in association with volcanism created a harmful environment causing mass extinction of fish. The adult Lycoptera protected their juveniles by its body at the moment before death. Such biological behavior will be increasingly reported given the wide occurrence of Lycoptera in Mesozoic strata. During the Late Cretaceous (Cenomanian), significant disruptions in the carbon cycle, global warming, and episodes of oceanic anoxia occurred, leading to the deposition of organic carbon-rich sediments. In well BED2-3, located in the BED2 gas field within the Abu Gharadig Basin (north Western Desert, Egypt), the lower-to-middle Cenomanian Bahariya Formation displays thick alternating layers of sandstones, siltstones, and shales. Detailed geochemical analyses were conducted on thirty-three cutting samples from the Bahariya Formation, focusing on total organic carbon (TOC), whole-rock elemental geochemistry, and carbonate content. These geochemical measurements provided valuable information regarding paleoredox conditions, marine biological productivity, terrigenous sediment influx, weathering and paleoclimate conditions, and mechanisms influencing organic matter accumulation. The enrichment factors (EF) of redox-sensitive trace elements were utilized to infer oxygenation conditions and marine biological productivity during the deposition of the Bahariya Formation. The stratigraphic distribution of redox-sensitive elements allowed for the Bahariya Formation to be categorized into lower and middle-upper intervals. The results revealed that the lower interval exhibited strong-to-enriched EF values of redox-sensitive elements and fair-to-rich TOC content, indicating a prevalent anoxic setting during deposition. In contrast, the middle-upper interval displayed weakly-to-slightly enriched EF values with poor-to-fair TOC content, suggesting deposition under oxic-suboxic redox conditions. By examining Al-normalized redox-sensitive ratios and their correlations with TOC content, significant relationships were observed in the lower interval, indicating a coupling between the enrichment of redox-sensitive elements and organic matter. This suggests enhanced biological productivity during deposition of the lower interval compared to the relatively low productivity during deposition of the middle-upper interval of the formation. These conditions controlled the production and preservation of organic matter in the lower interval, while the middle-upper interval suffered from organic matter dilution and destruction due to an increased influx of terrigenous material and lower biological productivity. Geochemical proxies related to detrital materials provided evidence of alternating terrigenous sediment flux, consistent with shifts between coarse- and fine-grained fractions and related facies of sandstones, siltstones, and shales. These findings align with active continental weathering in the source terrane and deposition under enhanced warm-humid climatic conditions, with intermittent arid-to-semi-arid phases. The sedimentary sequence of the Ninama Basin is associated with the latest phase of the continental Deccan volcanism of the Indian peninsula. It occurs as inter-, intratrappeans with a 39-m thick sequence comprising Sukhbhadar Formation and Ninama Limestone. The investigation aims to reconstruct its depositional setting based on the lithofacies and inorganic geochemistry to understand the influence of paleosalinity, paleoredox, paleodepth, provenance and paleoclimate on the sedimentation pattern. It is characterized by clastic and chemically formed rocks, including shale, mudstone, siltstone, sandstone and limestone. Facies analysis has revealed seven lithofacies, amongst which four are clastic facies, shale (SH), calcareous shale (CSH), silty mudstone (SM) and lithic greywacke (LGW), and three are carbonate facies, namely, grey-black limestone (GBL), cherty limestone (CL) and marlite (ML). Using geochemical analysis of major oxides and trace elements, ratios of Ca/(Ca+Fe), Sr/Ba, V/(V+Ni), V/Cr, Fe/(Ca+Mg), Ti/Al, Na/K, K/(Fe+Mg), CIA-K and MAP were determined and used to interpret and note the changes in the depositional system. The combined results of the lithofacies and geochemistry indicate that the deposition occurred in three phases. Phase 1 is characterized by high energy conditions in the shallow to moderate depth brackish-saline lake with oxic to dysoxic conditions; Phase 2 is characterized by anoxic deep fresh to the brackish water basin; and Phase 3 is characterized by semiarid conditions, saline, anoxic waters, high evaporation leading to shallowing of the lake, and low to moderate terrestrial input. This lacustrine basin in the paleotopographic low of the Deccan Volcanic Province is characterized by distinct lithology governed by various depositional parameters. A composite depositional model is constructed for the Ninama Basin, reflecting three phases of evolution that are dominantly controlled by the paleoenvironment. Groundwater is the most important source for drinking water in The Netherlands. Groundwater quality is threatened by the presence of pesticides, and biodegradation is a natural process that can contribute to pesticide removal. Groundwater conditions are oligotrophic and thus biodegradation can be limited by the presence and development of microbial communities capable of biodegrading pesticides. For that reason, bioremediation technologies such as bioaugmentation (BA) can help to enhance pesticide biodegradation. We studied the effect of BA using enriched mixed inocula in two column bioreactors that simulate groundwater systems at naturally occurring redox conditions (iron and sulfate-reducing conditions). Columns were operated for around 800 days, and two BA inoculations (BA1 and BA2) were conducted in each column. Inocula were enriched from different wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) under different redox-conditions. We observed a temporary effect of BA1, reaching 100% removal efficiency of the pesticide 2,4-D after 100 days in both columns. In the iron-reducing column, 2,4-D removal was in general higher than under sulfate-reducing conditions demonstrating the influence of redox conditions on overall biodegradation. We observed a temporary shift in microbial communities after BA1 that is relatable to the increase in 2,4-D removal efficiency. After BA2 under sulfate-reducing conditions, 2,4-D removal efficiency decreased, but no change in the column microbial communities was observed. The present study demonstrates that BA with a mixed inoculum can be a valuable technique for improving biodegradation in anoxic groundwater systems at different redox-conditions. Capturing the loss of mass-independent sulphur isotope fractionation (MIF-S), the correlative South African Duitschland and Rooihoogte formations are widely held to bear the isotopic fingerprint of the first atmospheric oxygenation at the onset of the so-called Great Oxidation Event (GOE). Surprisingly, however, while the multiple sulphur isotope systematics of these formations remain central to our understanding of the GOE, until now, comparatively little work has been done to elucidate the repercussions within the marine realm. Here we present chemostratigraphic records from four drill cores covering a large area of the Transvaal Basin, transcending these crucial units and continuing into the overlying Timeball Hill Formation (TBH), that document the immediate, yet counterintuitive, marine response to atmospheric oxygenation. Specifically, irrespective of the interpretative framework employed, our basin-wide redoxsensitive trace element data document an environmental change from oxic/suboxic conditions within the lower and middle parts of the Duitschland and Rooihoogte formations to suboxic/anoxic conditions within their upper reaches. Interestingly, in concert with a ~35‰ negative δ34S excursion that implicates increased sulphate availability and bacterial sulphate reduction, δ98/95Mo3134+0.25 values increase by ~1.0 to 1.5‰. Combining these observations with increased Fe/Mn ratios, elevated total sulphur and carbon contents and a trend towards lower δ13Corg values imply a shift toward less oxygenated conditions across the Transvaal Basin. The combined observations in the mentioned parameters expose a geobiological feedback-driven causality between the earliest oxygenation of the atmosphere and decreased redox potentials of medium to deep marine environments, at least within the Transvaal Basin. The Cambro‐Ordovician interval marks a significant transition from extinction to bio‐diversification in deep time. However, the relationship of bio‐transition to volcanism, commonly characterized by mercury (Hg) systematics in sedimentary records, has not been examined. We present the first Cambro‐Ordovician Hg systematics from the Scandinavian Alum Shale. Our results show pronounced Furongian Hg enrichments, coupled with positive Δ199Hg, Δ200Hg, and Δ201Hg values and negative Δ204Hg values that we ascribe to atmospheric Hg transport over long‐distances, while Early Ordovician Hg anomalies, characterized by near‐zero mass‐independent isotope values, indicative of submarine source. Our findings are supported by two new proxies: molybdenum‐Hg and vanadium‐δ202Hg co‐variations, demonstrating Hg systematics were strongly influenced by changes in source and depositional conditions. Constrained by a synchronous atmospheric‐tectonic‐oceanic model, we hypothesize Furongian subaerial volcanism contributed to global extinction and oceanic anoxia, whereas Early Ordovician submarine volcanism concurrent with ocean water upwelling promoted the nascent bio‐diversification. An upper Pliensbachian–Aalenian brachiopod succession is reported from Ponor Mountain, Western Balkan Mountains, Bulgaria. This includes nine species (6 rhynchonellides and 3 terebratulides) from eight genera. A new genus Bulgariarhynchia and two new species, Bulgariarhynchia ponorensis and Capillirhynchia brezenensis, are formally described. A single species Homoeorhynchia ? aff. prona was found in the upper Pliensbachian. Most of the brachiopods derived from the Toarcian–Aalenian interval, and comprise: Pseudogibbirhynchia jurensis, Rhynchonelloidea angulata, Globirhynchia subobsoleta, Sphaeroidothyris uretae, Lobothyris? hispanica, and Telothyris jauberti. The brachiopod assemblages were dated using coeval ammonite biostratigraphy. Both ammonites and brachiopods display clear northwest European affinities. The new brachiopod taxa are considered autochthonous for the Balkan Mountains. Three biofacies (BF2, BF3 and BF5) were recognised and implied alternating suboxic to anoxic bottom water conditions. A few geochemical proxies are indicative of the early Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event (T-OAE) in the stratigraphic column. The main T-OAE pulse was fixed at the coeval positive δ13C and negative δ18O excursions, as well as increases in Hg/TOC ratios and redox-sensitive elements. The late Pliensbachian–earliest Toarcian time span was found to be the most hostile for the brachiopods. Above it, brachiopods lived in less stagnant environments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Elemental sulfur and its derivatives, polysulfides, play a key role in hydrogen sulfide oxidation processes in anoxic basins. Having low solubility, elemental sulfur is mainly represented by suspended forms. However, in sulfide waters, it forms highly soluble polysulfides. This article studies elemental sulfur and polysulfides in the upper part of the Black Sea anoxic water column in 2017–2019 and 2022 at stations located on the continental slope off the coast of the Caucasus and Crimea. Sulfur was sampled, filtered, and determined under strictly anoxic conditions in an argon atmosphere. The concentration of elemental sulfur (zero-valent sulfur (ZVS)–elemental sulfur together with polysulfides) increases with depth and hydrogen sulfide content from 0.01 µmol/kg at the redox interface to 0.67 µmol/kg at a depth of 600 m. The elemental sulfur fraction in the composition of ZVS is 23 ± 5%. Based on thermodynamic data, calculation of the polysulfide concentration in equilibrium with suspended sulfur shows that deeper than 20–25 m of the upper boundary of the anoxic zone, their concentration was higher than ZVS and at a depth of 600 m they differed about threefold. The predominance of elemental sulfur over sulfide sulfur in the composition of polysulfides in the anoxic zone at depths of 450 and 600 m may be the reason for the fractionation of its isotopic composition by 2.2‰ with respect to dissolved sulfide sulfur (–41.0‰ VCDT). The Cretaceous Period is a vital time interval in deciphering the evolutionary history of the Neo-Tethys Ocean and the convergence of different plates and blocks across the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. A detailed stratigraphic framework and paleogeographic patterns are the basis for understanding the evolution of the Neo-Tethys Ocean and the formation of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. Here, the Cretaceous stratigraphy, biota, paleogeography, and major geological events in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau are analyzed to establish an integrative stratigraphic framework, reconstruct the paleogeography during the Cretaceous Period, and decode the history of the major geological events. The Cretaceous rocks of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and its surrounding area are predominantly marine deposits, with a small amount of interbedded marine-terrestrial and terrestrial conponents. The Indus-Yarlung Tsangpo Suture Zone was responsible for the deposition of deep marine sediments dominated by ophiolite suites and radiolarian silicalite. To the south, the Tethys Himalayas and Indus Basin received marine sediments of varying depths and lithology; to the north, the Xigaze and Ladakh forearc basins are also filled with marine sediments. The Lhasa Block, Karakorum Block, western Tarim Basin, and West Burma block consist of shallow marine, interbedded marine-terrestrial, and terrestrial sediments. The Qiangtang Basin and other areas are dominated by terrestrial sedimentation. The Cretaceous strata of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and its surrounding areas are widely distributed and diversified, with abundant foraminifera, calcareous nannofossils, radiolarians, ammonites, bivalves, and palynomorphs. On the basis of integrated lithostratigraphic, biostratigraphic, geochronologic, and chemostratigraphic analyses, we proposed herein a comprehensive stratigraphic framework for the Cretaceous Period of the eastern Neo-Tethys. By analyzing the Cretaceous biota of different biogeographic zones from eastern Neo-Tethys and its surrounding areas, we reconstructed the paleobiogeography of different periods of eastern Neo-Tethys. The Cretaceous paleogeographic evolution of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and its surrounding areas can be divided into three phases: (1) gradual breakup of the Indian Plate from the Australia-Antarctica continent and the early collision phase of the Lhasa-Qiangtang blocks (145–125 Ma); (2) northward drift of the Indian Plate and the collision phase of the Lhasa-Qiangtang blocks (125–100 Ma); (3) rapid northward drift of the Indian Plate, formation of the Tarim-Tajik-Karakorum Bay, and early uplift of the Gangdise Mountains (100–66 Ma). The Indus-Tethys Himalayan biota underwent a transition from the cold-water type in the high latitudes of the southern hemisphere to the warm-water type near the equator from the Early Cretaceous to the Mid-Cretaceous. The biodiversity and abundance of the eastern Neo-Tethys Ocean increased gradually in the Early Cretaceous, peaking in the Mid-Cretaceous, and decreased sharply during the late Late Cretaceous (late Maastrichtian). The permanently anoxic waters in meromictic lakes create suitable niches for the growth of bacteria using sulphur metabolisms like sulphur oxidation. In Lake Pavin, the anoxic water mass hosts an active cryptic sulphur cycle that interacts narrowly with iron cycling, however the metabolisms of the microorganisms involved are poorly known. Here we combined metagenomics, single‐cell genomics, and pan‐genomics to further expand our understanding of the bacteria and the corresponding metabolisms involved in sulphur oxidation in this ferruginous sulphide‐ and sulphate‐poor meromictic lake. We highlighted two new species within the genus Sulfurimonas that belong to a novel clade of chemotrophic sulphur oxidisers exclusive to freshwaters. We moreover conclude that this genus holds a key‐role not only in limiting sulphide accumulation in the upper part of the anoxic layer but also constraining carbon, phosphate and iron cycling. Ancient manganese (Mn) deposits are primarily characterized by the presence of Mn(II) carbonates that likely formed by the diagenetic reduction of precursor Mn(IV) oxides. As such, Precambrian sedimentary Mn deposits have been used as a line of evidence for the evolution of oxygen in Earth's surface environments. However, recent studies have shown that these Mn(II)-carbonates have the ability to directly accumulate within anoxic water columns, where free oxygen does not play a role in their formation. This alternative pathway casts uncertainty on the robustness of using ancient Mn deposits to constrain the redox fabric of the past marine water columns. Here, we investigate the Wafangzi Mn and Fe ore deposit from the 1.45 billion-year-old Tieling Formation, North China. The deposit contains Mn(II,III) mineral phases (hausmannite, braunite) as inclusions, or unreacted residues, trapped within Mn(II) carbonate (Ca-rhodochrosite). Some nodules and oolites of Mn(II) and Fe(II)-carbonate phases are also present and display a banded structure with concentric rings. Mn(III) oxide (manganite) is present in a paragenetic assemblage along with hematite and replacement textures with braunite. The negative carbon isotope composition (δ13C, –7‰ to –4‰) from Mn(II) carbonate samples in the Wafangzi Mn deposit which are distinct from that of contemporaneous seawater (~0‰), along with petrographic and speciation analyses, collectively suggest that the Mn(II,III)- and Fe(II)-bearing mineral phases formed through the diagenetic reduction of primary Mn(IV)/Fe(III) minerals coupled to the oxidation of organic matter. Therefore, the Wafangzi Mn deposit suggests the presence of sufficiently oxygenated marine waters, overlying anoxic ferruginous deeper waters with a transitional manganous water layer that could have driven the redox cycling of Mn, Fe, and C. Given the contemporaneous economic Mn deposits in the 1.45 Ga Ullawarra Formation in Western Australia, our findings imply the existence of a transient, and perhaps widespread, pulsed oxygenation event in the mid-Proterozoic oceans. Millennial-scale climate variations during the last glacial period, such as Dansgaard–Oeschger (DO) cycles and Heinrich events, have been extensively studied using ice core and marine proxy records. However, there is a limited understanding of the magnitude of these temperature fluctuations in continental regions, and questions remain about the seasonal signal of these climate events. This study presents a 60 000-year-long temperature reconstruction based on branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (brGDGTs) extracted from lake sediments from the Eifel Volcanic Field, Germany. brGDGTs are bacterial membrane-spanning lipids that are known to have a strong relationship with temperature, making them suitable for temperature reconstructions. We test several temperature calibration models on modern samples taken from soils and multiple maar lakes. We find a negative bias in brGDGT-based temperature estimates associated with water depth and anoxic conditions that can be corrected for by accounting for a brGDGT isomer that is only produced in anoxic conditions. The corrected temperature reconstruction correlates with proxy and climate model estimates of temperature spanning the same time period, validating the calibration approach we selected. However, millennial-scale variability is significantly dampened in the brGDGT record, and in contrast to other Northern Hemisphere climate records, during several Heinrich stadials, temperatures actually increase. We demonstrate that these apparent discrepancies can be explained by the unique seasonal response of the brGDGT paleothermometer to temperatures of months above freezing (TMAF). Our data support the view that warm-season temperatures in Europe varied minimally during the last glacial period and that abrupt millennial-scale events were defined by colder, longer winters. Our continuous high-resolution temperature reconstruction provides important information about the magnitude of seasonal climate variability during the last glacial period that can be used to test climate models and inform studies of paleoecological change. Accretionary prisms are composed mainly of ancient marine sediment scraped from the subducting oceanic plate at convergent plate boundaries. Anoxic groundwater is stored in deep aquifers associated with accretionary prisms and can be collected via deep wells. We investigated how such groundwater pumping affects the microbial community in a deep aquifer. Groundwater samples were collected from a deep well drilled down to 1500 m every six months (five times in total) after completion of deep well construction and the start of groundwater pumping. Next-generation sequencing and clone-library analyses of 16S rRNA genes were used to describe the subterranean microbial communities in the samples. The archaea: the prokaryote ratio in groundwater increased significantly from 1 to 7% (0 and 7 months after initiating groundwater pumping) to 59 to 72% (13, 19, and 26 months after initiating groundwater pumping), and dominant prokaryotes changed from fermentative bacteria to sulfate-reducing archaea. The optimal growth temperature of the sulfate-reducing archaea, estimated based on the guanine-plus-cytosine contents of their 16S rRNA genes, was 48–52 °C, which agreed well with the groundwater temperature at the deep-well outflow. Our results indicated that, in deep aquifers, groundwater pumping enhances groundwater flow, and the supply of sulfate-containing seawater activates the metabolism of thermophilic sulfate-reducing archaea. The Cambrian explosion, one of the most consequential biological revolutions in Earth history, occurred in two phases separated by the Sinsk event, the first major extinction of the Phanerozoic. Trilobite fossil data show that Series 2 strata in the Ross Orogen, Antarctica, and Delamerian Orogen, Australia, record nearly identical and synchronous tectono-sedimentary shifts marking the Sinsk event. These resulted from an abrupt pulse of contractional supracrustal deformation on both continents during the Pararaia janeae trilobite Zone. The Sinsk event extinction was triggered by initial Ross/Delamerian supracrustal contraction along the edge of Gondwana, which caused a cascading series of geodynamic, paleoenvironmental, and biotic changes, including (i) loss of shallow marine carbonate habitats along the Gondwanan margin; (ii) tectonic transformation to extensional tectonics within the Gondwanan interior; (iii) extrusion of the Kalkarindji large igneous province; (iv) release of large volumes of volcanic gasses; and (v) rapid climatic change, including incursions of marine anoxic waters and collapse of shallow marine ecosystems. The mid-Proterozoic, spanning 1.8 to 0.8 billion years ago, is recognized as a phase of marine anoxia, low marine primary productivity (MPP), and constrained eukaryotic biodiversity. However, emerging evidence suggesting intermittent environmental disturbances and concurrent eukaryotic evolution challenges the notion of a stagnant Earth during this era. We present a study detailing volcanic activity and its consequential impact on terrestrial weathering and MPP, elucidated through the examination of 1.4-billion-year-old tropical offshore sediments. Our investigation, leveraging precise mercury (Hg) and lithium (Li) isotopic analyses, reveals the introduction of fresh rock substrates by local volcanism. This geological event initiated a transformative process, shifting the initial regolith-dominated condition in tropical lowland to a regime of enhanced chemical weathering and denudation efficiency. Notably, the heightened influx of nutrient-rich volcanic derivatives, especially phosphorus, spurred MPP rates and heightened organic carbon burial. In order to investigate the influence of primary production, dilution and preservation on organic matter accumulation, geochemical data and geochemical proxies of primary production, clastic influx and redox conditions were presented from the Cambrian Niutitang Formation organic-rich shales. The primary production proxies (TOC, Mo, P, Ba and Babio) and redox proxies (Ni/Co, V/Cr, U/Al and Th/U) suggest that the black organic-rich shales of the Niutitang Formation are deposited in anoxic/euxinic condition with high primary production. The pyrite of the Niutitang Formation is composed of spherical framboids, indicating that the anoxic bottom water could not prevail before organic matter degradation during the Niutitang Formation deposition. High primary production enhances organic carbon flux into chemocline layer and bottom water, leading to the anoxic bottom water from oxygen consumption by microorganisms and organic matter degradation. The anoxic bottom water in turn is beneficial to preservation of organic matter. In addition, Ti/Al ratios correlate well with TOC contents through the Niutitang Formation, indicating that clastic inputs enhance the burial rate for preventing organic matter from degradation during Niutitang Formation deposition. In coastal waters, methane-oxidizing bacteria (MOB) can form a methane biofilter and mitigate methane emissions. The metabolism of these MOBs is versatile, and the resilience to changing oxygen concentrations is potentially high. It is still unclear how seasonal changes in oxygen availability and water column chemistry affect the functioning of the methane biofilter and MOB community composition. Here, we determined water column methane and oxygen depth profiles, the methanotrophic community structure, methane oxidation potential, and water–air methane fluxes of a eutrophic marine basin during summer stratification and in the mixed water in spring and autumn. In spring, the MOB diversity and relative abundance were low. Yet, MOB formed a methane biofilter with up to 9% relative abundance and vertical niche partitioning during summer stratification. The vertical distribution and potential methane oxidation of MOB did not follow the upward shift of the oxycline during summer, and water–air fluxes remained below 0.6 mmol m−2 d−1. Together, this suggests active methane removal by MOB in the anoxic water. Surprisingly, with a weaker stratification, and therefore potentially increased oxygen supply, methane oxidation rates decreased, and water–air methane fluxes increased. The Black Sea is a permanently anoxic, marine basin serving as model system for the deposition of organic‐rich sediments in a highly stratified ocean. In such systems, archaeal lipids are widely used as paleoceanographic and biogeochemical proxies; however, the diverse planktonic and benthic sources as well as their potentially distinct diagenetic fate may complicate their application. To track the flux of archaeal lipids and to constrain their sources and turnover, we quantitatively examined the distributions and stable carbon isotopic compositions (δ13C) of intact polar lipids (IPLs) and core lipids (CLs) from the upper oxic water column into the underlying sediments, reaching deposits from the last glacial. The distribution of IPLs responded more sensitively to the geochemical zonation than the CLs, with the latter being governed by the deposition from the chemocline. The isotopic composition of archaeal lipids indicates CLs and IPLs in the deep anoxic water column have negligible influence on the sedimentary pool. Archaeol substitutes tetraether lipids as the most abundant IPL in the deep anoxic water column and the lacustrine methanic zone. Its elevated IPL/CL ratios and negative δ13C values indicate active methane metabolism. Sedimentary CL‐ and IPL‐crenarchaeol were exclusively derived from the water column, as indicated by non‐variable δ13C values that are identical to those in the chemocline and by the low BIT (branched isoprenoid tetraether index). By contrast, in situ production accounts on average for 22% of the sedimentary IPL‐GDGT‐0 (glycerol dibiphytanyl glycerol tetraether) based on isotopic mass balance using the fermentation product lactate as an endmember for the dissolved substrate pool. Despite the structural similarity, glycosidic crenarchaeol appears to be more recalcitrant in comparison to its non‐cycloalkylated counterpart GDGT‐0, as indicated by its consistently higher IPL/CL ratio in sediments. The higher TEX86, CCaT, and GDGT‐2/‐3 values in glacial sediments could plausibly result from selective turnover of archaeal lipids and/or an archaeal ecology shift during the transition from the glacial lacustrine to the Holocene marine setting. Our in‐depth molecular‐isotopic examination of archaeal core and intact polar lipids provided new constraints on the sources and fate of archaeal lipids and their applicability in paleoceanographic and biogeochemical studies. Ediacaran to Early Cambrian sequences are well preserved in several synclines within the Lesser Himalaya. We have conducted multi-proxy geochemical and stable isotopic studies on carbonaceous sediments of the basal Tal Group to decipher redox conditions of the Earliest Cambrian Ocean. Organic matter is immature, predominantly aliphatic and likely derived from marine phytoplankton. The S/C(organic) ratios above 0.4; strong enrichment of redox-sensitive trace elements V, Mo, U and Cd; higher DOPT, U/Th, V/Sc, Mo/Sc and V/(V+Ni) ratios; V/Al–U/Al–Mo/Al systematics and U–Mo enrichment factors indicate anoxic to euxinic conditions of deposition. Large variations (5–7‰) in δ13C likely reflect spatial heterogeneity or vertical gradient in DIC compositions of the Early Cambrian Ocean, and possibly capture the part of Basal Cambrian negative Carbon isotope Excursion (BACE). Finely disseminated texture of pyrite framboids with sizes mostly below 10 µm suggest sulfide reduction within the water column in an open system. Isotopically heavy δ34S values (+4.5 to +22.8‰) overlap with the δ34Ssulfate of contemporary Fortunian ocean (+10 to +40‰), suggesting sulfidic conditions and small size of the sulfate reservoir. Whereas the REE+Y proxies of the same set of samples show seawater-like patterns, with strong HREE enrichment, positive Y and La anomalies and negative Ce anomaly (avg. Ce/Ce* = 0.78), indicating REE uptake by phytoplankton from an oxidized-euphotic surface zone. The combined geochemical and isotopic data suggest a strongly stratified ocean with sulfidic bottom water and oxidized surface water. Episodic shoaling of anoxic deep water onto the surface possibly caused the extinction of benthic Ediacaran fauna, and the surface oxidized zone likely provided the niche for further metazoan radiation. The greenhouse gas methane (CH4) contributed to a warm climate that maintained liquid water and sustained Earth’s habitability in the Precambrian despite the faint young sun. The viability of methanogenesis (ME) in ferruginous environments, however, is debated, as iron reduction can potentially outcompete ME as a pathway of organic carbon remineralization (OCR). Here, we document that ME is a dominant OCR process in Brownie Lake, Minnesota (midwestern United States), which is a ferruginous (iron-rich, sulfate-poor) and meromictic (stratified with permanent anoxic bottom waters) system. We report ME accounting for ≥90% and >9% ± 7% of the anaerobic OCR in the water column and sediments, respectively, and an overall particulate organic carbon loading to CH4 conversion efficiency of ≥18% ± 7% in the anoxic zone of Brownie Lake. Our results, along with previous reports from ferruginous systems, suggest that even under low primary productivity in Precambrian oceans, the efficient conversion of organic carbon would have enabled marine CH4 to play a major role in early Earth’s biogeochemical evolution. Hydrogen sulfide is produced by heterotrophic bacteria in anoxic waters and via carbonyl sulfide hydrolysis and phytoplankton emissions under oxic conditions. Apparent losses of dissolved cadmium (dCd) and zinc (dZn) in oxygen minimum zones (OMZs) of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans have been attributed to metal‐sulfide precipitation formed via dissimilatory sulfate reduction. It has also been argued that such a removal process could be a globally important sink for dCd and dZn. However, our studies from the North Pacific OMZ show that dissolved and particulate sulfide concentrations are insufficient to support the removal of dCd via precipitation. In contrast, apparent dCd and dZn deficits in the eastern tropical South Pacific OMZ do reside in the oxycline with particulate sulfide maxima, but they also coincide with the secondary fluorescence maxima, suggesting that removal via sulfide precipitation may be due to a combination of dissimilatory and assimilatory sulfate reduction. Notably, dCd loss via precipitation with sulfide from assimilatory reduction was found in upper oxic waters of the North Pacific. While dissimilatory sulfate reduction may explain local dCd and dZn losses in some OMZs, our evaluation of North Pacific OMZs demonstrates that dCd and dZn losses are unlikely to be a globally relevant sink. Nevertheless, metal sulfide losses due to assimilatory sulfate reduction in surface waters should be considered in future biogeochemical models of oceanic Cd (and perhaps Zn) cycling. Plain Language Summary: The Pacific Ocean hosts multiple oxygen minimum zones (OMZs), chiefly in the Northeast Pacific and the Eastern Tropical Pacific. Understanding anaerobic biodegradation of ether oxygenates beyond MTBE in groundwater is important, given that it is replaced by ETBE as a gasoline additive in several regions. The lack of studies demonstrating anaerobic biodegradation of ETBE, and its product TBA, reflects the relative resistance of ethers and alcohols with a tertiary carbon atom to enzymatic attack under anoxic conditions. Anaerobic ETBE- or TBA-degrading microorganisms have not been characterized. Only one field study suggested anaerobic ETBE biodegradation. Anaerobic (co)metabolism of ETBE or TBA was reported in anoxic microcosms, indicating their biodegradation potential in anoxic groundwater systems. Non-isotopic methods, such as the detection of contaminant loss, metabolites, or ETBE- and TBA-degrading bacteria are not sufficiently sensitive to track anaerobic biodegradation in situ. Compound- and position-specific stable isotope analysis provides a means to study MTBE biodegradation, but isotopic fractionation of ETBE has only been studied with a few aerobic bacteria (εC −0.7 to −1.7‰, εH −11 to −73‰) and at one anoxic field site (δ2H-ETBE +14‰). Similarly, stable carbon isotope enrichment (δ13C-TBA +6.5‰) indicated TBA biodegradation at an anoxic field site. The aquatic networks that connect soils with oceans receive each year 5.1 Pg of terrestrial carbon to transport, bury and process. Stagnant sections of aquatic networks often become anoxic. Mineral surfaces attract specific components of organic carbon, which are released under anoxic conditions to the pool of dissolved organic matter (DOM). The impact of the anoxic release on DOM molecular composition and reactivity in inland waters is unknown. Here, we report concurrent release of iron and DOM in anoxic bottom waters of northern lakes, removing DOM from the protection of iron oxides and remobilizing previously buried carbon to the water column. The deprotected DOM appears to be highly reactive, terrestrially derived and molecularly distinct, generating an ambient DOM pool that relieves energetic constraints that are often assumed to limit carbon turnover in anoxic waters. The Fe-to-C stoichiometry during anoxic mobilization differs from that after oxic precipitation, suggesting that up to 21% of buried OM escapes a lake-internal release-precipitation cycle, and can instead be exported downstream. Although anoxic habitats are transient and comprise relatively small volumes of water on the landscape scale, our results show that they may play a major role in structuring the reactivity and molecular composition of DOM transiting through aquatic networks and reaching the oceans. In order to investigate the effect of primary productivity, organic matter dilution, and preservation on the accumulation of organic matter, geochemical data, and proxies of primary productivity, clastic influx, and redox conditions were obtained for organic-rich shales in the Cambrian Niutitang Formation. The primary productivity (total organic carbon [TOC], Mo, P, Ba, and Babio) and redox (Ni/Co, V/Cr, U/Al, and Th/U) proxies suggest the organic-rich shales were deposited in anoxic-euxinic conditions during periods of high primary productivity. Pyrite in the Niutitang Formation comprises spherical framboids, which also indicate that anoxic bottom waters were present during organic matter deposition. High primary productivity enhanced the organic C flux into the thermocline layer and bottom waters, which lead to the development of anoxic bottom waters owing to O2 consumption by microorganisms and organic matter degradation. The anoxic bottom waters were beneficial for the preservation of organic matter. In addition, Ti/Al ratios correlate well with TOC contents throughout the Niutitang Formation, indicating that clastic input increased the burial rate and prevented organic matter degradation during deposition. Therefore, the accumulation of organic matter in the Niutitang Formation was controlled mainly by primary productivity rather than bottom-water redox conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Frequent magmatism was a major event causing the mass extinction across the Permian/Triassic Boundary. In the current study, we determined magmatism characteristics from the Pingdingshan section at the Permian/Triassic Boundary using conodont-based geochemical proxies at a high-resolution scale (~ 50 kyr). Integrated trace elements (Mn, Sr, Rb, and Th) and stable/radioactive isotopes (δ18O, δ13C, and 87Sr/86Sr) revealed that conodonts provided an ideal proxy for chemostratigraphic signatures of ancient seawater. The conodont-based, high-resolution 87Sr/86Sr isotopes from the studied interval (250.50–252.00 Ma) displayed three decreasing cycles upwardly against a long-term increasing background, reflecting three episodes of magmatism. As a contrast, the conodont-based, high-resolution δ18O isotopes from this interval exhibited no episodic pattern, indicating that the δ18O isotopes of conodonts were limitedly influenced by marine magmatism. The high-resolution δ13C values of micrites displayed a pattern consistent with the trend of long-term background, revealing that the δ13C signatures of episodic magmatism were not inherited by micrites. The magmatism associated with the EPME event exerted great influences upon the Chihsian source rocks by introducing massive heat through hydrothermal fluids and causing pervasive oceanic anoxia. The Santa Barbara Basin naturally experiences transient deoxygenation due to its unique geological setting in the southern California Borderland and seasonal changes in ocean currents. Long-term measurements of the basin showed that anoxic events and subsequent nitrate exhaustion in the bottom waters have been occurring more frequently and lasting longer over the past decade. One characteristic of the Santa Barbara Basin is the seasonal development of extensive mats of benthic nitrate-reducing sulfur-oxidizing bacteria, which are found at the sediment–water interface when the basin's bottom waters reach anoxia but still provide some nitrate. To assess the mat's impact on the benthic and pelagic redox environment, we collected biogeochemical sediment and benthic flux data in November 2019, after anoxia developed in the deepest waters of the basin and dissolved nitrate was depleted (down to 9.9 µ M). We found that the development of mats was associated with a shift from denitrification to dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium. The zone of sulfate reduction appeared near the sediment–water interface in sediment hosting these ephemeral white mats. We found that an exhaustion of iron oxides in the surface sediment was an additional prerequisite for mat proliferation. Our research further suggests that cycles of deoxygenation and reoxygenation of the benthic environment result in extremely high benthic fluxes of dissolved iron from the basin's sediment. Phosphorites of the Georgina Basin (northern Australia) are an established economic source of phosphate and have recently been recognized to be a potential source of rare earth elements (REE). Previous bulk‐rock geochemistry work focused on the eastern margin of the basin revealed that phosphorites from the southern region have significantly higher (up to 0.5%) REE contents than equivalent prospects further to the north. In this study, we examine the origin of REE enrichment in the Georgina Basin phosphorites using an integrated geochemical, petrographic, mineralogical, and isotopic (Sm‐Nd and Sr) approach. The trace element geochemistry of primary phosphate minerals is consistent with a seawater origin for the REEs in phosphorites, with minimal input from the underlying basement rocks. Variations in total REE concentrations are controlled largely by the seawater composition, depositional environment, and the texture of the phosphorite (grainstone vs. mudstone phosphorite). Grainstone phosphorite yields on average higher concentrations of REEs compared to the mudstone phosphorite, likely due to the higher surface‐to‐mass ratio of the grainstone phosphorite resulting in the uptake of higher concentrations of REEs during coastal reworking. The formation of the low‐REE northern and central deposits took place during early transgression in oxidized, shallow supratidal to subtidal platformal environments. During the subsequent main transgressive event, fault‐controlled topography in the southern domain allowed phosphogenesis along basement highs to be facilitated along a redox boundary, where more saline and REE‐rich deep anoxic bottom waters, along with Fe‐cycling and bacterial mediation played a major role in the enrichment of REEs in the southern phosphorites. The uranium isotope composition (δ238U) of seawater is a powerful proxy for the extent of marine anoxia. For paleoredox reconstructions, carbonates are the most popular U isotope archive, but they have recently come under increased scrutiny as their δ238U values are subject to diagenetic alteration after deposition. Therefore, there is a need to investigate other archives that may record and preserve the original seawater δ238U signal. In this study, we explore whether shark teeth provide such an archive. Shark teeth enameloid consisting of crystalline fluorapatite is more resistant to post-depositional alteration and less sensitive to isotopic exchange than marine carbonates due to the lower solubility of the crystalline fluorapatite. Since U is readily incorporated into phosphate, shark teeth could incorporate and preserve the original δ238U signature of seawater. To assess whether U isotopes in shark teeth can record seawater signatures, we measured the U isotopes (both δ238U and δ234U sec) in 39 fossil shark teeth from various locations, including Banks Island (Arctic), the Gulf of Mexico (GOM), and Pisco Basin (Peru), and ranging in age from modern to Cretaceous. Our results show that U concentrations are negligible in modern shark teeth (<1 ppb) but elevated in fossil samples (up to several hundred ppm), indicating that U is incorporated into shark teeth postmortem during burial. The δ238U values range from −0.72 to +0.57 ‰, and the δ234U values from −162.1 to +969.7 ‰. The data indicate that (i) diagenetic overprinting of seawater U isotope ratios is common among shark teeth, and (ii) δ238U data are influenced by local depositional environments. Nonetheless, the U isotope variations observed in shark teeth are comparable to those seen in marine carbonates, indicating that the samples with less diagenetic alterations might offer useful insight into the past extent of ocean anoxia. Hypolimnetic oxygen depletion during summer stratification in lakes can lead to hypoxic and anoxic conditions. Hypolimnetic anoxia is a water quality issue with many consequences, including reduced habitat for cold-water fish species, reduced quality of drinking water, and increased nutrient and organic carbon (OC) release from sediments. Both allochthonous and autochthonous OC loads contribute to oxygen depletion by providing substrate for microbial respiration; however, their relative contributions to oxygen depletion across diverse lake systems remain uncertain. Lake characteristics, such as trophic state, hydrology, and morphometry, are also influential in carbon-cycling processes and may impact oxygen depletion dynamics. To investigate the effects of carbon cycling on hypolimnetic oxygen depletion, we used a two-layer process-based lake model to simulate daily metabolism dynamics for six Wisconsin lakes over 20 years (1995–2014). Physical processes and internal metabolic processes were included in the model and were used to predict dissolved oxygen (DO), particulate OC (POC), and dissolved OC (DOC). In our study of oligotrophic, mesotrophic, and eutrophic lakes, we found autochthony to be far more important than allochthony to hypolimnetic oxygen depletion. Autochthonous POC respiration in the water column contributed the most towards hypolimnetic oxygen depletion in the eutrophic study lakes. POC water column respiration and sediment respiration had similar contributions in the mesotrophic and oligotrophic study lakes. Hydrogeochemistry of a lignite pit lake in Lusatia, Germany, was investigated. Anoxic groundwater from the dump aquifer rich in FeII (average ~5911 µmol/L) and SO4 (average ~14,479 µmol/L) contents enter the lake as subsurface inflow; oxidation and subsequent precipitation of poorly crystallized Fe-oxyhydroxysulfate (schwertmannite) occurs and causes acidification (pH~2.8). However, the removal of dissolved loads as solid phases significantly improves the groundwater quality of the downgradient as an outflow. The rainwater isotopic values (δD ~−8.88‰ and δ18O ~−65.86‰) closely matched with the groundwater showing very little isotopic modification, which points to a short residence time of groundwater. The displacement of δD and δ18O values (slope = 5.3) from the meteoric water line reflected the evaporative enrichment of the lake water. The isotopic signature also revealed longer residence times of epilimnion than the hypolimnion waters which are dominated by groundwater. The lake is dimictic and showed abrupt changes in physicochemical parameters along the interface (~0.30 m thick) when separating the epilimnion (upper 4 m) from the hypolimnion (bottom 1.5 m). Lake sediments were found to be dominated by clay size fraction occurring as laminations (thickness: 1~0.5 mm) that reflect seasonal sedimentation. Higher schwertmannite formation in the south as compared to the north (recharge side) also serves as a scavenger of potentially toxic elements which is probably a natural solution to man-made problems. Schwertmannite transformation to goethite releases sulfate which is reduced and fixed as secondary sulfide minerals over time. Overall, waters are of a Ca–SO4 to Ca–Mg–SO4 type with distinct inflow (FeII/FeIII > 2.5) and outflow (FeII/FeIII < 0.5) of groundwater. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Niutitang Formation in the South China Block might be a source of hydrocarbon as it contains an enormous quantity of organic matter. Black rock of the Early Cambrian Niutitang Formation is widely distributed in the Yangtze region, but detailed geochemical understanding of it is still emerging. This research discusses the detailed geochemical characteristics of the Niutitang Formation to reconstruct the paleoenvironmental conditions, employing total organic carbon (TOC) content, major, trace, and rare earth element data. For this purpose, black rock specimens of the Niutitang Formation from two outcrop sections were utilized for geochemical characterization, and the results compared with another eight sections from the South China Block. The average total organic carbon in these sediments is significantly higher (5.80 wt.%). In the platform region, lower quantities of TOC indicate a poor potential to produce hydrocarbons. At the same time, significantly higher TOC is observed in the deep shelf and slope sediments, indicating a significant potential to produce hydrocarbons. The average Ce, Eu and Y anomalies from both Longbizui and Sancha sections studied are 0.74, 0.86, 1.77, 1.07, and 1.19, 1.30, respectively. The chemical index of alteration (CAI) throughout the Yangtze block is higher (averaging 71.32) than that of Post Archean Australian Shale (PAAS 69), indicating a moderately weathered source of the Niutitang Formation relative to PAAS. As the sediments are moderately weathered, this suggests these rocks might have been derived from felsic rocks, mainly granite-granodiorite. The normalization of REEs in the black rocks reveals a reduction of light REEs with increase in heavy REEs enrichment. Similarly, a positive Eu anomaly, negative Ce anomaly, and a moderate Y/Ho (34.61) are clues to a hybrid depositional mechanism associated with hydrothermal action and terrigenous input. These anomalies are also evidence of upwelling in the paleo-ocean and mixing of organic matter, which created anoxic bottom water during the deposition of the Niutitang Formation in the basin and upper oxic water conditions before deposition. The main controlling factors for the distribution of rare earth elements in these black rocks of the Niutitang Formation are pH, terrigenous input, source rock composition, tectonism, an upwelling mechanism, and hydrothermal activity. Formation of the Kanda Bay resulted from construction of a railway dam (1916) and subsequent isolation of the sea lagoon from the main basin of the Kandalaksha Gulf, White Sea. Decreased action of tidal flows, which mix the water column of the lagoon, altered the hydrological regime of the basin. Decreased water exchange resulted in formation of oxygen-depleted near-bottom water and to sulfide contamination. A freshwater lake was, however, preserved in the southern part of the Kanda Bay. The composition of microbial communities was studied for the near-bottom water horizons at different sides of the Kanda Bay. The oxygen regime in this layer was found to change, with increasing concentrations of sulfide and methane and active processes of sulfate reduction and methane oxidation. The composition of the microbial community changed noticeably, with lower abundance of true marine and freshwater microorganisms and development of bacteria and archaea predominant in microbial communities of anoxic water in meromictic basins. Among the microbial diversity, indicator species with increased abundance were revealed. These are archaea of the genera Methanoregula and Methanosaeta (phylum Halobacterota). The sulfur cycle microorganisms, which were the indicators of stagnant marine water, included anoxygenic phototrophic bacteria of the class Chlorobia, (Chlorobium phaeovibrioides, Pelodictyon phaeoclathratiforme), Chloroflexi of the genus Chloronema, nonsulfur purple bacteria related to the genus Rhodoferax, colorless sulfur bacteria of the family Beggiatoaceae, and sulfur oxidizers of the genus Thiobacillus. Archaea of the genus Nitrosopumilus (phylum Crenarchaeota) and bacteria of the genus Woeseia may be considered opposites to the indicator microorganisms, since they were found only in the open sea water. In our opinion, stable water exchange through the dam will result in the stable composition of the Kanda Bay microbial community, with only seasonal variations and year-to-year fluctuations. The negative scenario supports prediction of conversion of the Kanda Bay into a stratified basin with anoxic near-bottom water and the microbial community similar to that found in meromictic lakes. The latest "big data" analyses and simulations made possible by the availability of previously unimagined massive datasets reveal several key findings: During the early Paleozoic, atmospheric oxygen levels were low, and widespread oceanic anoxia was prevalent; the Devonian era witnessed a greenhouse climate, followed by the Carboniferous ice age characterized by higher oceanic oxidation levels and alkalinity. The latest Paleozoic deglaciation occurred under high pCO2 conditions, extending into much of the Mesozoic and early Cenozoic, marked by multiple hyperthermal and anoxia expansion events, until the resurgence of global glaciation in the middle-late stages of the Cenozoic, ultimately bringing environmental and climatic conditions closer to modern levels. By correlating the aforementioned long-term trends with major geological events, we can delineate the co-evolution of paleoclimate and oceanic environments in tandem with the development of Tethys tectonics as follows. (1) During the Proto-Tethys stage, global paleo-elevations were relatively low, and atmospheric oxygen levels were also relatively modest. Despite the occurrence of significant tectonic movements that led to noticeable transgressive-regressive cycles, their effects on climate and oceanic environments were somewhat limited due to the relatively weak interactions. (2) The emergence of the Paleo-Tethys was a significant event that coincided with the formation of the supercontinent Pangaea. Intensive orogenic movements during this period increased the global land area and elevation. This, in turn, led to enhanced terrestrial weathering, which elevated sea surface productivity and resulted in massive nutrient input into the oceans. Consequently, this process contributed to the rise of oxygen levels in the atmosphere and a decrease in atmospheric pCO2. These changes are considered potential driving mechanisms for late Paleozoic glaciation and oceanic oxygenation. (3) The transition from the Paleo-Tethys to the Neo-Tethys was closely linked to the breakup of Pangaea. During this period, the terrestrial weathering processes were relatively weak due to decreased continental elevations. This resulted in a long-term greenhouse climate and intermittent global oceanic events, which were responses to the high atmospheric pCO2 levels during the Mesozoic and early Cenozoic eras. (4) The Neo-Tethys stage ended with the dramatic uplift of the Alps-Himalaya Mountain ranges due to the collision of India and Asia. This uplift had a profound global impact, significantly increasing continental elevations. As a result, weathering and carbon burial processes intensified, leading to a reduction in atmospheric pCO2. Concurrently, this uplift played a crucial role in the establishment of the East Asian monsoon and North Atlantic deep-water circulations, both of which played a part in triggering the late Cenozoic ice age. These models suggest that the teleconnections between land and sea (orogeny-terrestrial weathering-marine carbon burial) span over the whole Phanerozoic and might have played a key role in balancing the Earth surface system. Combined, the tectonic, volcanic, paleo-climatic, as well as paleoenvironmental events recorded in the Tethys oceans and adjunct continents represent valuable natural experiments and lessons for understanding the present and the future of Earth's habitability. Oceanic Anoxic Event 2 (OAE 2) (∼ 93.5 Ma) is characterized by widespread marine anoxia and elevated burial rates of organic matter. However, the factors that led to this widespread marine deoxygenation and the possible link with climatic change remain debated. Here, we report long-term biomarker records of water-column anoxia, water-column and photic zone euxinia (PZE), and sea surface temperature (SST) from Demerara Rise in the equatorial Atlantic that span 3.8 Myr of the late Cenomanian to Turonian, including OAE 2. We find that total organic carbon (TOC) content is high but variable (0.41 wt %–17 wt %) across the Cenomanian and increases with time. This long-term TOC increase coincides with a TEX 86 -derived SST increase from ∼ 35 to 40 ∘ C as well as the episodic occurrence of 28,30-dinorhopane (DNH) and lycopane, indicating warming and expansion of the oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) predating OAE 2. Water-column euxinia persisted through much of the late Cenomanian, as indicated by the presence of C 35 hopanoid thiophene but only reached the photic zone during OAE 2, as indicated by the presence of isorenieratane. Using these biomarker records, we suggest that water-column anoxia and euxinia in the equatorial Atlantic preceded OAE 2 and this deoxygenation was driven by global warming. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
