The Arabic language has negation tools, which are (La, Ma, An, Hal, Lam, Lamma, Lan, Lays, Lat), and the function of these tools is to connect and suspend between the parts of the structure, in addition to the function of connecting between the sections of the word within the sentence. The research was in grammatical semantics, and we chose from it the topic of negation, which is the denial of the proof of a ruling by using one of the tools mentioned previously. We did not address the topic of negation in a comprehensive manner, but rather the research for this topic was based on the presence of its tools in the Holy Quran in general and the thirtieth part - the general part - in particular. The article written by the blind Masseur and Esperantist Mr. Tanabe Kunio and is translated into Russian in the year of the author’s 75th anniversary with his permission. The study, first published in 2013, is a modern evidence of V.J. Eroshenko’s activity and experience of staying in Japan namely what’s considered to be the most important for the blind. Like Vasily Eroshenko, Mr. Tanabe Kunio, who is a graduate of the Tokyo School for the Blind, is a masseur and Esperantist, so his experience is somewhat unique. The author’s attention is focused on what had been already achieved by the predecessors and, thus, could be repeated, and perhaps, improved. That’s why, the history development of the blind social movement in different countries is extremely significant for all modern blind people by following an example of the life achievements of their predecessors. This translation expands the theme of the years spent by Vasily Yeroshenko in Japan, initiated by Mrs. Isaki Michiko, a former teacher at the Tokyo School for the Blind, in her article “Eroshenko and the Tokyo Blind School”. However, it should not be viewed one-sidedly without taking into account the experience of the blind themselves. Fortunately, it was quite unique when sighted and blind researchers worked on the study of the archives of the Tokyo School for the Blind simultaneously and in a rather narrow circle. In such a cooperation, small groups of sighted and blind scholars were absolutely reasonable. Therefore, the blind scolars could bring together information from raised (Braille) manuscripts and publications that are unobtainable to sighted; and vice versa sighted ones gathered information from ordinary handwritten and printed sources inaccessible to the blind. It apeared that almost semultaneously studies of sighted and blind authors were written on the same historical material. This phenomenon is unique and gives us the opportunity to consider two articles as a kind of diptych, where one can see a number of nuances that would otherwise go unnoticed. The attention of the blind author Tanabe Kunio is attracted by Eroshenko’s activism, perseverance and mobility, as well as his ability to achieve goals, that is, the experience of the blind man surviving in extreme conditions, such as persecution, active participation in the socialist movement, arrests and repeated expulsions. Close attention also should be paid to the conclusion of the article – which is visually impaired or unsighted should not blindly imitate the sighted people, rejecting their own special needs and requirements. The extreme value and significance of V.J. Eroshenko as a blind activist for the blind people in Japan in the early 20th and in the first third of the 21st century remains the same – he acted precisely as a blind both among the blind and among the sighted. A tangible emphasis on the role of Christianity and its ideas in forming personal activism and a network of organizations supporting the blind in Japan should as well be highlighted in the proposed article. This subject was not for consideration for almost a century, however, lately it has become increasingly topical. The researchers of the International Research Group “Vasily Eroshenko and his time” are preparing an Internet conference “The Gospel and Eroshenko”, which will be held in the form of submitting and publishing the materials in 2020–2022, timed to the 130th jubilee from Eroshenko’s birth and the 70th death anniversary of the writer.

This study investigates the relationship between musical ability and pronunciation proficiency of English as a foreign language [EFL] of university students of English philology. English pronunciation of the participants is evaluated by academic teachers of English in three categories: the general impression of the foreign or native accent, the accuracy of production of English sounds and the use of word stress and intonation. This experiment was conducted entirely online. Participants' musical ability was tested using Gordon's Advanced Measure of Music Audiation [AMMA]. The results of this study demonstrate a moderately positive correlation between musicality and FL pronunciation proficiency. The more musical students, the higher marks from the judges. The present findings seem to be consistent with other studies which suggest that musical skills may positively affect the acquisition of foreign language pronunciation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Previous studies show beneficial effects of musicality on the acquisition of a second language (L2). While most research focused on perceptual aspects, only few studies investigated the effects of musicality on productive phonology. The present study tested if musicality can predict productive phonological skills in L2 acquisition. Sixty-three students with no previous exposure to Arabic were asked to repeatedly listen to and immediately reproduce short sentences in standard Arabic. Before the sentence reproduction task, they completed an auditory discrimination task in three different between-subjects condition: attentive, in which participants were asked to discriminate phonological variations in the same Arabic sentence that they were asked to reproduce later; non-attentive, in which participants were asked to detect beeps in the same Arabic sentences without paying attention to their phonological content; and no-exposure, in which participants performed the discrimination task in another language (Serbian). The first, third and seventh reproductions of each participant were rated for intelligibility, accent, and syllabic errors by two independent evaluators, both native speakers of Arabic. Primary results showed that the intelligibility of the reproduced sentences was higher in participants with high musicality scores in the Advanced Measures of Music Audiation. Moreover, the intelligibility of sentences produced by highly musical participants improved more over time than the intelligibility of participants with lower musicality scores. Previous exposure to the Arabic sentence was beneficial in both the attentive and non-attentive conditions. Our results support the idea that musicality can have effects on productive skills even in the very first stages of L2 acquisition.

The aim of this study was to correlate musical aptitude scores derived from two tests based on the same structural model for musical aptitude in a sample of 9- to 13-year-old children. We controlled for the influences of socioeconomic status (SES; measured by parents’ education), the amount of music lessons, and general cognitive abilities (i.e., IQ). The sample comprised 89 (46 girls) 9- to 13-year-old children. We applied two different tests by Edwin Gordon: Intermediate Measures of Music Audiation (IMMA) and Advanced Measures of Music Audiation (AMMA) to measure musical aptitude. As control variables, IQ, socioeconomic status, and amount of music training were assessed. A hierarchical multiple regression analysis revealed that the total score of the IMMA together with the control variables could not predict the total score of the AMMA. Furthermore, regression models for each of the subtests were also not significant. With respect to the control variables, we revealed an association between the IMMA and socioeconomic status as well as amount of music training. We conclude that even tests that are based on the same structural model of musical aptitude were not associated significantly. This might indicate problems of validity. Additionally, it seems to be difficult to assess musical aptitude independently of influences from music training and SES. For the remote Sahara, the Earth's largest dust source, there has always been a near-absence of data for evaluating models. Here, new observations from the Fennec project are used along with Sahelian data from the African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis (AMMA) to give an unprecedented evaluation of dust-generating winds in the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts ERA-Interim reanalysis (ERA-I). Consistent with past studies, near-surface, high-speed winds are lacking in ERA-I and the diurnal variability is under-represented. During the summer monsoon season, correlations of ERA-I with observed wind-speed are low (∼0.35 in Sahel and 0.25-0.4 in the Sahara). Fennec data show for the first time that: (1) correlations are reduced even in the Sahara, not directly influenced by the monsoon, (2) the systematic underestimation of observed winds by ERA-I in the summertime Sahel extends into the central Sahara: potentially explaining the failure of global models to capture the observed global dust maximum that occurs over the summertime Sahara (such as CMIP5), and demonstrates that modelled winds must be improved if they are to capture this key feature of the climatology. ERA-Interim product from the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecast (ECMWF) assimilation of African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis (AMMA) resources, Meteosat satellite images, and synoptic observations were used to study local- and regional-scale environments associated with intense convective systems during the AMMA-SOP3 experiment over West Africa in the Northern Hemisphere of summer 2006. The convective system, from the 21st to 23rd of August 2006, was more active at 0000 and 1800 UTC showing diurnal cycle of deep convection over West Africa where the African easterly waves (AEWs) are developed downstream. Downstream barotropic and baroclinic energy conversions associated with strong AEWs are important for the maintenance of AEW activity in West Africa. Barotropic energy conversions dominate south of the African easterly jet (AEJ), while baroclinic energy conversions are most important north of the AEJ. From a dynamical viewpoint, the low-level vorticity presents strong positive values over the sea and Sahara zone, indicating that exists on the cyclonic shear side of the African easterly jet, which is consistent with baroclinic growth. The 925-hPa equivalent potential temperature structure show a maximum over the Sahara which corresponds to the depression observed in this region. A mosaic of three hourly infrared (IR) satellite images, depicts a very distinct signal from an initial region of convection, developing through several stages and moving off the African coast. These observations, along with those available from the World Weather Watch, provide an opportunity to carry out numerical weather prediction (NWP) studies over West Africa utilizing high resolution limited area models. This article deals with the tropospheric water vapour distribution at Niamey (Niger) observed with a high-temporal-resolution (14 s) microwave radiometric profiler. Data were collected during the whole year 2006 in the framework of the African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis (AMMA) campain. Two seasonal periods are considered: the dry season, when the northeasterly Harmattan is flowing at low tropospheric level, and the wet season, associated with the southwesterly monsoon circulation. The fine vertical structure of temperature, convective air stability and water vapour for each seasonal period is described in detail and differences are emphasized. Typical temporal series and monthly averaged diurnal cycles are presented. It is shown that a diurnal cycle of water vapour is present throughout the year, including the dry season. The diurnal cycle of water vapour is controlled mainly by the nocturnal low-level jet (NLLJ). During the dry season, the diurnal cycle of water vapour is organized into two layers: a lower layer (LL) from the surface up to 0.6-1.4 km above ground level (agl) and an upper layer (UL) from 1.4 up to 5-6 km agl. The water vapour distributions in the LL and UL are anticorrelated, with a half-day temporal shift. As a result, the vertically integrated water vapour (IWV), which displays a quasi-sinusoidal diurnal cycle when computed separately for the LL and UL, appears almost flat for the total tropospheric height, due to the half-day period shift. This structure of two layers is not observed during the wet season. Probability density functions (pdfs) of water vapour content are presented. In dry conditions, the pdfs are well fitted by a log-normal distribution, while the Weibull distribution fits the pdfs for wet conditions better. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study explores simulations using the numerical Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, with respect to the representation of the nocturnal low-level jet (LLJ) over the Sahel. Three sets of experiments are designed to investigate the sensitivity with respect to (i) the boundary-layer and surface-layer schemes including local and non-local closures, (ii) the horizontal grid spacing and the number of vertical levels within the lowest kilometre and (iii) the role of initial and boundary data. In total, 27 simulations are performed on one host domain and two nested domains for a representative LLJ case study on 9 November 2006. The ability of the individual simulations to represent the life cycle of the nocturnal LLJ is validated against observations carried out in the framework of the African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis (AMMA) special observation periods: surface wind observations from Agoufou, Bamba and Banizoumbou, atmospheric wind profiles derived from Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Mobile Facility, wind radar measurements at Niamey and profiles from radiosondes launched at Niamey. All runs reproduce the general characteristics of the observed LLJs satisfactorily. In contrast to earlier studies, results are more sensitive to the choice of initial and boundary data (here GFS and ECMWF) than to the boundary-layer and surface schemes used or to model grid resolution. The sensitivity to the model grid resolution is surprisingly minor. Considerable differences between the individual stations suggest that local surface conditions such as roughness length, albedo or soil moisture may play an important role in the observed mismatch between model simulations and observations. Based on a random sample of 543 followers of a new religious movement called Mata Amritanandamayi Mission in India, this article argues that these followers derived their sense of well-being through the gift of embrace by its iconic teacher Mata Amritanandamayi or Amma, also known worldwide as the "hugging saint." Followers are recipients of her embrace which is looked at predominantly as a healing touch as well as an expression of maternal love and proximity to the divine. I have studied the ways followers get associated with the movement and the roles they play, the images they have of Amma, and their experiences and perceived efficacy of her embrace. The Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-Being scale has been used to measure well-being. The efficacy of the embrace creates a habitus of Amma's followers who have various positive experiences through the association. Simultaneously it also generates a collective memory and exclusive cultural identities for Amma's followers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nigeria has a high population density and large fossil fuel resources but very poorly managed energy infrastructure. Satellite observations of formaldehyde (HCHO) and glyoxal (CHOCHO) reveal very large sources of anthropogenic nonmethane volatile organic compounds (NMVOCs) from the Lagos megacity and oil/gas operations in the Niger Delta. This is supported by aircraft observations over Lagos and satellite observations of methane in the Niger Delta. Satellite observations of carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) show large seasonal emissions from open fires in December–February (DJF). Ventilation of central Nigeria is severely restricted at that time of year, leading to very poor ozone air quality as observed from aircraft (MOZAIC) and satellite (TES). Simulations with the GEOS-Chem chemical transport model (CTM) suggest that maximum daily 8-h average (MDA8) ozone exceeds 70 ppbv over the region on a seasonal mean basis, with significant contributions from both open fires (15–20 ppbv) and fuel/industrial emissions (7–9 ppbv). The already severe ozone pollution in Nigeria could worsen in the future as a result of demographic and economic growth, although this would be offset by a decrease in open fires. Aerosols affect the Earth's radiation balance directly and cloud microphysical processes indirectly via the activation of cloud condensation and ice nuclei. These two effects have often been considered separately and independently, hence the need to assess their combined impact given the differing nature of their effects on convective clouds. To study both effects, an aerosol-microphysics-radiation coupling, including Goddard microphysics and radiation schemes, was implemented into the NASA Unified Weather Research and Forecasting model (NU-WRF). Fully coupled NU-WRF simulations were conducted for a mesoscale convective system (MCS) that passed through the Niamey, Niger area on 6-7 August 2006 during an AMMA special observing period. The results suggest that rainfall is reduced when aerosol indirect effects are included, regardless of the aerosol direct effect. Daily mean radiation heating profiles in the area traversed by the MCS showed the aerosol (mainly mineral dust) direct effect had the largest impact near cloud tops just above 200 hPa where short-wave heating increased by about 0.8 K day−1; the weakest long-wave cooling was at around 250 hPa. It was also found that more condensation and ice nuclei as a result of higher aerosol/dust concentrations led to increased amounts of all cloud hydrometeors because of the microphysical indirect effect, and the radiation direct effect acts to reduce precipitating cloud particles (rain, snow and graupel) in the middle and lower cloud layers while increasing the non-precipitating particles (ice) in the cirrus anvil. However, when the aerosol direct effect was activated, regardless of the indirect effect, the onset of MCS precipitation was delayed about 2 h, in conjunction with the delay in the activation of cloud condensation and ice nuclei. Overall, for this particular environment, model set-up and physics configuration, the effect of aerosol radiative heating due to mineral dust overwhelmed the effect of the aerosols on microphysics. A mesoscale convective system (MCS) case study was observed over northeast Mali as part of the African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis (AMMA) on 31 July 2006. Observations of this case suggest that the soil-moisture heterogeneity and atmospheric gravity waves emitted from a 'parent' MCS were important trigger mechanisms for this system. This study uses high-resolution Met Office Unified Model (MetUM) simulations to assess the importance of the synoptic circulation, land-surface and gravity waves in the initiation and development of the MCS. During the early afternoon shallow convection developed over a region of dry soil within a synoptic-scale convergence zone, which was caused by the confluence of the southerly monsoon flow with winds associated with the circulation around the Saharan heat low. Two pronounced waves were emitted from a nearby 'parent' storm and propagated towards the convergence zone. When the second wave reached the location of the shallow convection, deep convection was immediately initiated. Further convective cells developed later in the afternoon over dry soil, many adjacent to strong soil moisture gradients; these aggregated with the main storm, which later developed into the case study MCS. A comparison of model simulations with/without the soil-moisture heterogeneity and gravity waves shows that the synoptic-scale circulation and convergence zones, specified by the atmospheric analysis, were the most important factors for the successful simulation of the MCS. If the location of the initiation of the system is to be forecast accurately, the land-surface, that is, the soil moisture, must be represented adequately. In order to reproduce the timing of the secondary initiation of convection correctly the model must be able to capture gravity waves that are emitted by existing systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article presents observations and model simulations of the low-level nocturnal structure of the atmosphere over West Africa. The measurements are taken from the dry-season Special Observing Period (SOP-0) of the African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis (AMMA), at Niamey, Niger, on 23 and 24 January 2006. During this time, mesoscale structures in the atmospheric aerosol loadings were observed. The available observations indicate that these mesoscale features at Niamey are consistent with the passage of gravity currents or bores in the northerly Harmattan winds. Model simulations at resolutions down to 1 km indicate that the mesoscale structures are caused by nocturnal frontogenesis in the baroclinic zone to the south of the Sahara in the winter months. This frontogenesis is a continental-scale phenomenon, which has significant implications for the uplift and transport of dust and biomass-burning aerosols in the region. An accompanying frontogenetic feature appears further south in the model simulations, associated with the winter intertropical front. The frontogenesis is possibly linked with the development of structures showing characteristics of canonical mesoscale phenomena, including internal bores and gravity currents. Observational data are presented from several low-level flights carried out during the afternoon over areas of the Sahel that had been previously wetted by rain. The measurements are used to quantify the response of boundary-layer circulations to surface heterogeneity over a range of ambient conditions. Satellite observations of surface temperature anomalies show that soil moisture is significantly correlated with the surface heterogeneity in a majority of flights. By analysing the flight data in frequency space, consistently high levels of coherence are found between surface and flight-level measurements at length-scales around 25 km, indicating the presence of mesoscale circulations induced by the surface variability. The circulations are detectable in all of the nine flights where the mean sensible heat flux is high enough and they persist in a range of background wind speeds up to 5 m s−1. Further analysis confirms that the spatial phase-difference between surface and flight-level variables increases with the strength of the mean wind along the flight track. The boundary-layer thermal anomalies and circulations are advected downstream by the mean wind, and lead to convergent uplift on the order of 0.25 m s−1 at the 25 km scale. These results compare well with those from a cloud-resolving model and are broadly consistent with an analytical, linear model of a heated boundary layer. By demonstrating the significance of soil moisture in driving the circulations, the study shows that soil moisture is a likely cause of the negative precipitation feedback seen in recent remote sensing studies over the region. Abstract: MOD17A2 provides operational gross primary production (GPP) data globally at 1km spatial resolution and 8-day temporal resolution. MOD17A2 estimates GPP according to the light use efficiency (LUE) concept assuming a fixed maximum rate of carbon assimilation per unit photosynthetically active radiation absorbed by the vegetation (εmax). Minimum temperature and vapor pressure deficit derived from meteorological data down-regulate εmax and constrain carbon assimilation. This data is useful for regional to global studies of the terrestrial carbon budget, climate change and natural resources. In this study we evaluated the MOD17A2 product and its driver data by using in situ measurements of meteorology and eddy covariance GPP for 12 African sites. MOD17A2 agreed well with eddy covariance GPP for wet sites. Overall, seasonality was well captured but MOD17A2 GPP was underestimated for the dry sites located in the Sahel region. Replacing the meteorological driver data derived from coarse resolution reanalysis data with tower measurements reduced MOD17A2 GPP uncertainties, however, the underestimations at the dry sites persisted. Inferred εmax calculated from tower data was higher than the εmax prescribed in MOD17A2. This, in addition to uncertainties in fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (FAPAR) explains some of the underestimations. The results suggest that improved quality of driver data, but primarily a readjustment of the parameters in the biome parameter look-up table (BPLUT) may be needed to better estimate GPP for African ecosystems in MOD17A2. Abstract: This paper describes a method that employs Earth Observation (EO) data to calculate spatiotemporal estimates of soil heat flux, G, using a physically-based method (the Analytical Method). The method involves a harmonic analysis of land surface temperature (LST) data. It also requires an estimate of near-surface soil thermal inertia; this property depends on soil textural composition and varies as a function of soil moisture content. The EO data needed to drive the model equations, and the ground-based data required to provide verification of the method, were obtained over the Fakara domain within the African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis (AMMA) program. LST estimates (3km×3km, one image 15min−1) were derived from MSG-SEVIRI data. Soil moisture estimates were obtained from ENVISAT-ASAR data, while estimates of leaf area index, LAI, (to calculate the effect of the canopy on G, largely due to radiation extinction) were obtained from SPOT-HRV images. The variation of these variables over the Fakara domain, and implications for values of G derived from them, were discussed. Results showed that this method provides reliable large-scale spatiotemporal estimates of G. Variations in G could largely be explained by the variability in the model input variables. Furthermore, it was shown that this method is relatively insensitive to model parameters related to the vegetation or soil texture. However, the strong sensitivity of thermal inertia to soil moisture content at low values of relative saturation (<0.2) means that in arid or semi-arid climates accurate estimates of surface soil moisture content are of utmost importance, if reliable estimates of G are to be obtained. This method has the potential to improve large-scale evaporation estimates, to aid land surface model prediction and to advance research that aims to explain failure in energy balance closure of meteorological field studies. The CNRM atmospheric general circulation model Arpege-Climat is relaxed towards atmospheric reanalyses outside the 10°S-32°N 30°W-50°E domain in order to disentangle the regional versus large-scale sources of climatological biases and interannual variability of the West African monsoon (WAM). On the one hand, the main climatological features of the monsoon, including the spatial distribution of summer precipitation, are only weakly improved by the nudging, thereby suggesting the regional origin of the Arpege-Climat biases. On the other hand, the nudging technique is relatively efficient to control the interannual variability of the WAM dynamics, though the impact on rainfall variability is less clear. Additional sensitivity experiments focusing on the strong 1994 summer monsoon suggest that the weak sensitivity of the model biases is not an artifact of the nudging design, but the evidence that regional physical processes are the main limiting factors for a realistic simulation of monsoon circulation and precipitation in the Arpege-Climat model. Sensitivity experiments to soil moisture boundary conditions are also conducted and highlight the relevance of land-atmosphere coupling for the amplification of precipitation biases. Nevertheless, the land surface hydrology is not the main explanation for the model errors that are rather due to deficiencies in the atmospheric physics. Abstract: As part of the AMMA (African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis) international research project, an intensive field campaign called “Special Observing Period” (SOP 0) was carried out in West Africa during the dry season (February 2006), near M’Bour, Senegal. The aim of the ground-based sampling experiment was to determine the chemical composition of dust and carbonaceous aerosols in the surface layer, then to investigate the main source areas influencing the chemical composition of the particles. Major elements (Al, Ca and Fe), total (TC) and black carbon (BC), and water soluble ion (Na+, K+, Mg2+, NH4 +, Cl−, NO3 −, and ) concentrations were measured. Total mass, number concentration and aethalometer measurements of PM-10 were also obtained. Mineral dust in the surface layer is principally present in the coarse fraction representing 75–90% of the collected mass (wt.%). Dust, suggested by backward trajectories of the air masses and supported by the variations of Ca/Al ratios, originates mainly from Northern Sahara. Particulate organic matter (POM) concentrations are more variable, but POM is mainly present in the fine fraction (up to 77 wt.%). Its presence is due to local sources such as domestic fire emissions rather than to remote sources as open-field vegetation fires in the Sahelian zone. Comparisons of Black Carbon (BC) concentrations measured with an aethalometer in the Ultra-violet and the Near-infrared wavelengths, show that POM originating from the adjacent Western African coast contains less aromatics than POM transported from the main biomass burning areas of the Sahelian zone. Thus, smouldering, the main combustion process for locally emitted carbon aerosols appears to generate less aromatic compounds than burning of vegetation. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In this investigation, the impact of soil moisture on the precipitation amount and distribution in model simulations for West Africa was assessed. This included the examination of the dependence of precipitation on soil moisture, boundary layer parameters or convective conditions. For this purpose, different soil moisture fields from the rainy season of the year 2006 in West Africa were collected. These included three analysis fields, satellite measurements, and model output from the African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis (AMMA) Land Surface Model Intercomparison Project. The different soil moisture fields were analyzed and compared first; large differences in the mean values, the north–south gradients, and the heterogeneity were revealed. The distributions were taken to initialize five convection-permitting model runs performed with the limited-area model COSMO (Consortium for Small-scale Modeling), forced by reanalyses from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts. A case study of a period with intense convective activity in the Sudanian and Sahelian zone was selected for the simulations. The simulated precipitation was compared with data from two satellite-based precipitation analyses and with forecasts from two global models of lower resolution. The model spread encompassed the precipitation analyses in the southern subdomain, while the latter lay far above the model results in the northern subdomain. The different soil moisture fields also influenced the turbulent fluxes at the surface, the boundary layer state and height as well as convective instability. Standard deviation of the simulations was highest for convective available potential energy, while the impact on convective inhibition was less pronounced. Only a weak negative relation of precipitation to soil moisture or conditional instability could be discerned. In this case, dry soil favored a higher boundary layer with better developed convective cells contributing to larger precipitation sums. The spread between the five precipitation forecasts suggests that a high-resolution limited-area ensemble, built by applying atmospheric variations as well as variations of the initial land surface conditions, will be a proper method to improve the prediction of mesoscale convective systems and convective precipitation for West Africa. The West African monsoon (WAM) circulation and intensity have been shown to be influenced by the land surface in numerous numerical studies using regional scale and global scale atmospheric climate models (RCMs and GCMs, respectively) over the last several decades. The atmosphere–land surface interactions are modulated by the magnitude of the north–south gradient of the low level moist static energy, which is highly correlated with the steep latitudinal gradients of the vegetation characteristics and coverage, land use, and soil properties over this zone. The African Multidisciplinary Monsoon Analysis (AMMA) has organised comprehensive activities in data collection and modelling to further investigate the significance land–atmosphere feedbacks. Surface energy fluxes simulated by an ensemble of land surface models from AMMA Land-surface Model Intercomparison Project (ALMIP) have been used as a proxy for the best estimate of the “real world” values in order to evaluate GCM and RCM simulations under the auspices of the West African Monsoon Modelling Experiment (WAMME) project, since such large-scale observations do not exist. The ALMIP models have been forced in off-line mode using forcing based on a mixture of satellite, observational, and numerical weather prediction data. The ALMIP models were found to agree well over the region where land–atmosphere coupling is deemed to be most important (notably the Sahel), with a high signal to noise ratio (generally from 0.7 to 0.9) in the ensemble and a inter-model coefficient of variation between 5 and 15%. Most of the WAMME models simulated spatially averaged net radiation values over West Africa which were consistent with the ALMIP estimates, however, the partitioning of this energy between sensible and latent heat fluxes was significantly different: WAMME models tended to simulate larger (by nearly a factor of two) monthly latent heat fluxes than ALMIP. This results due to a positive precipitation bias in the WAMME models and a northward displacement of the monsoon in most of the GCMs and RCMs. Another key feature not found in the WAMME models is peak seasonal latent heat fluxes during the monsoon retreat (approximately a month after the peak precipitation rates) from soil water stores. Summary: Studying surface–atmosphere feedback is often limited by the accuracy of the land surface observations (particularly soil moisture estimates) or the performance of the land surface models. To further our understanding of soil moisture effects on land–atmosphere fluxes, improvements in soil moisture mapping over large regions are necessary. The aim of this study was to obtain accurate soil moisture mapping over a 120 by 100km2 area in West Africa using the considerable amount of measurements available from local and regional scales, recorded during the African monsoon multidisciplinary analysis (AMMA) experiment. The modelling strategy was based on the use of a land surface model (LSM), employed to provide high-resolution soil moisture mapping over the studied area. A microwave emission model was then used to simulate associated microwave brightness temperatures (TB) to compare with the Advanced microwave scanning radiometer (AMSR) at the same spatial (25 by 20km2) and temporal resolution (daily). Discrepancies between observed and simulated TB were analysed and used to calibrate the LSM and the microwave emission models to match the specific hydrology and soil microwave behaviour of the studied area. Nevertheless, a positive bias of the near-surface soil moisture remained and the land surface model was still unable to reproduce the rapid dynamic of the near-surface soil moisture observed at the local and regional scales in this climatic context. To solve this problem, a secondary surface soil layer was added to match in situ soil moisture measurements as well as satellite microwave measurements. Additionally, the choice of the soil permittivity model was found to be of prior importance in order to perform suitable microwave brightness temperatures. Finally, a soil moisture retrieval algorithm based on AMSR and meteosat second generation (MSG) measurements was proposed in order to improve the quality of the soil moisture estimates over the studied area (the root mean square error decreases from 5.4 % vol. to 2.8 % vol). Summary: This paper presents the ground soil moisture measurements performed over the so-called Gourma meso-scale site in Mali, Sahel, in the context of the African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis (AMMA) project. The Gourma meso-scale soil moisture network is part of a complete land surface processes observing and modelling strategy and is associated to vegetation and meteorological field measurements as well as soil moisture remote sensing. It is spanning in latitude between N and N. In 2007, it includes 10 soil moisture stations, of which three stations also have meteorological and flux measurements. A relevant spatial sampling strategy is proposed to characterise soil moisture at different scales including local, kilometer, super-site and meso-scales. In addition to the local stations network, transect measurements were performed on different coarse textured (sand to sandy-loam) sites, using portable impedance probes. They indicate mean value and standard deviation (STD) of the surface soil moisture (SSM) at the kilometer scale. This paper presents the data set and illustrates soil moisture spatial and temporal features over the Sahelian Gourma meso-scale site for 2005–2006. Up-scaling relation of SSM is investigated from (i) local to kilometer scale and (ii) from local to the super site scale. It is shown to be stable in space and time (2005–2006) for different coarse textured sites. For the Agoufou local site, the up-scaling relation captures SSM dynamics at the kilometer scale with a 0.9% accuracy in volumetric soil moisture. At the multi-site scale, an unique up-scaling relation is shown to be able to represent kilometer SSM for the coarse textured soils of the meso-scale site with an accuracy of 2.2% (volumetric). Spatial stability of the ground soil moisture stations network is also addressed by the Mean Relative Difference (MRD) approach for the Agoufou super site where five soil moisture stations are available (about ). This allows the identification of the most representative ground soil moisture station which is shown to be an accurate indicator with low variance and bias of the soil moisture dynamics at the scale of the super site. Intensive local measurements, together with a robust up-scaling relation make the Gourma soil moisture network suitable for a large range of applications including remote sensing and land surface modelling at different spatial scales. Summary: The West African monsoon interacts strongly with the land surface, yet knowledge of these interactions is severely limited by the lack of observations of surface energy fluxes. Within the framework of the AMMA project, three eddy covariance flux stations were installed to sample the three main surface types near Hombori (Mali) in the central Sahel at 15.3°N, and a fourth station was installed near Bamba in the northern Sahel at 17.1°N to sample semi-desert conditions. Observed land types near Hombori comprised a grassland growing on sandy soil (near the village of Agoufou), a flooded forest in a clay-soil depression (Kelma), and a bare rocky soil (Eguerit). The energy balance closure at the grassland site was satisfactory, but less so at the flooded forest site. Surface water heat storage during the flood and advection probably were responsible for most of the imbalance. The daily sensible heat flux (H) was fairly constant throughout the year at Bamba and Eguerit, with only a slight increase during the monsoon season corresponding to increased net radiation. By contrast, the seasonal cycle of the grassland site was marked, with H decreasing during the monsoon season from 70Wm−2 in May to 20Wm−2 in August. The flooded woodland exhibited the strongest contrast between the dry and wet seasons, with daily sensible heat flux close to zero during the flood. During the peak monsoon season, the two vegetated sites had the highest net radiation and the lowest sensible heat flux, as a consequence of the strong evapotranspiration rates caused by both high soil moisture availability and high leaf area index. Lateral fluxes of water were found to be strong drivers of inter-site sensible and latent heat fluxes variability, with water leaving bare rocky soils as surface runoff and ending in the clay depressions (e.g., Kelma), whereas the sandy soils were locally endorheic, with most of the rainfall being rapidly returned to the atmosphere. An attempt was made to scale the sensible heat flux up to the scale of the AMMA northern super-site (60km×60km), following a simple scaling scheme, which accounted for the contrasting surface types and water regimes. The super-site average sensible heat flux proved to be close to the grassland sensible heat flux, in part because grassland occupies 55% of the area. A strong spatial variability was caused by the difference in water regime and vegetation type, at a scale large enough to potentially influence the atmospheric properties such as the boundary layer. Summary: The Gourma site in Mali is one of the three instrumented meso-scale sites deployed in West-Africa as part of the African Monsoon Multi-disciplinary Analysis (AMMA) project. Located both in the Sahelian zone sensu stricto, and in the Saharo–Sahelian transition zone, the Gourma meso-scale window is the northernmost site of the AMMA-CATCH observatory reached by the West African Monsoon. The experimental strategy includes deployment of a variety of instruments, from local to meso-scale, dedicated to monitoring and documentation of the major variables characterizing the climate forcing, and the spatio-temporal variability of surface processes and state variables such as vegetation mass, leaf area index (LAI), soil moisture and surface fluxes. This paper describes the Gourma site, its associated instrumental network and the research activities that have been carried out since 1984. In the AMMA project, emphasis is put on the relations between climate, vegetation and surface fluxes. However, the Gourma site is also important for development and validation of satellite products, mainly due to the existence of large and relatively homogeneous surfaces. The social dimension of the water resource uses and governance is also briefly analyzed, relying on field enquiry and interviews. The climate of the Gourma region is semi-arid, daytime air temperatures are always high and annual rainfall amounts exhibit strong inter-annual and seasonal variations. Measurements sites organized along a north–south transect reveal sharp gradients in surface albedo, net radiation, vegetation production, and distribution of plant functional types. However, at any point along the gradient, surface energy budget, soil moisture and vegetation growth contrast between two main types of soil surfaces and hydrologic systems. On the one hand, sandy soils with high water infiltration rates and limited run-off support almost continuous herbaceous vegetation with scattered woody plants. On the other hand, water infiltration is poor on shallow soils, and vegetation is sparse and discontinuous, with more concentrated run-off that ends in pools or low lands within structured endorheic watersheds. Land surface in the Gourma is characterized by rapid response to climate variability, strong intra-seasonal, seasonal and inter-annual variations in vegetation growth, soil moisture and energy balance. Despite the multi-decadal drought, which still persists, ponds and lakes have increased, the grass cover has largely recovered, and there are signs of increased tree cover at least in the low lands. Objective. The physiological activity of the heart is controlled and modulated mostly by the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems. Heart rate variability (HRV) analysis is therefore used to observe fluctuations that reflect changes in the activity in these two branches. Knowing that acceleration and deceleration patterns in heart rate fluctuations are asymmetrically distributed, the ability to analyze HRV asymmetry was introduced into MMA. Approach . The new method is called asymmetric multiscale multifractal analysis (AMMA) and the analysis involved six groups: 36 healthy persons, 103 cases with aortic valve stenosis, 36 with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, 32 with atrial fibrillation, 59 patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) and 13 with congestive heart failure. Main results . Analyzing the results obtained for the 6 groups of patients based on the AMMA method, i.e. comparing the Hurst surfaces for heart rate decelerations and accelerations, it was noticed that these surfaces differ significantly. And the differences occur in most groups for large fluctuations (multifractal parameter q  > 0). In addition, a similarity was found for all groups for the AMMA Hurst surface for decelerations to the MMA Hurst surface-heart rate decelerations (lengthening of the RR intervals) appears to be the main factor determining the shape of the complete Hurst surface and so the multifractal properties of HRV. The differences between the groups, especially for CAD, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and aortic valve stenosis, are more visible if the Hurst surfaces are analyzed separately for accelerations and decelerations. Significance . The AMMA results presented here may provide additional input for HRV analysis and create a new paradigm for future medical screening.
