Comorbidity in mental disorders is prevalent among adolescents, with evidence suggesting a general psychopathology factor ("p" factor) that reflects shared mechanisms across different disorders. However, the association between the "p" factor and protective factors remains understudied. The current study aimed to explore the "p" factor, and its associations with psycho-social functioning, in Chinese adolescents. 2052 students, aged 9–17, were recruited from primary and secondary schools in Shanghai, China. Multiple rating scales were used to assess psychological symptoms and psycho-social functioning. Confirmatory factor analysis was conducted to verify the fit of models involving different psychopathology domains such as externalizing, internalizing, and the "p" factor. Subsequently, structural equation models were used to explore associations between the extracted factors and psycho-social functioning, including emotion regulation, mindful attention awareness, self-esteem, self-efficacy, resilience, and perceived support. The bi-factor model demonstrated a good fit, with a "p" factor accounting for 46 % of symptom variation, indicating that the psychological symptoms of Chinese adolescents could be explained by internalizing, externalizing, and the "p" factor. Psychologically, a higher "p" was positively correlated with emotion suppression and negatively correlated with mindful attention awareness, emotion reappraisal, self-esteem, and resilience. Socially, a higher "p" was associated with decreased perceived support. Only common symptoms were included as this study was conducted at school. Furthermore, the cross-sectional design limited our ability to investigate causal relationships. A "p" factor exists among Chinese adolescents. Intimate partner violence can occur as a form of stalking behaviour, which is considered a pattern of repeated and unwanted behaviours towards another individual. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 498 participants from Portugal, aged between 12–21 years. Findings support that adolescent stalking perpetrators exhibited psychopathic traits, psychopathology, aggression, and childhood trauma. Results showed that anxiety partially mediates the association between childhood trauma and stalking perpetration. These findings provide a better understanding of stalking in adolescence, which allows professionals to have a more comprehensive approach when considering intervention programs. Throughout his career, John Schulenberg challenged us to understand adolescent development as the confluence of distal and proximal experiences along with critical transitions. Heeding this call, we examined whether chronic childhood peer victimization predicted adolescents' depressive symptoms via early‐emerging depression growth trajectories, continued victimization into adolescence, and stress‐amplification at the middle school transition. Self‐reported depressive symptoms and teacher‐reported and self‐reported peer victimization were obtained from 636 youth (338 girls; Mage = 7.96 years, 66.7% White, 21.7% Black, 11.6% other) in the 2nd–9th grades. Latent growth curve analyses revealed that, by 7th grade, chronic childhood peer victimization was associated with depressive symptoms only through an indirect association with peer victimization in adolescence, underscoring how interrelated historical and ongoing interpersonal stressors contribute to adolescent psychopathology. Child and adolescent psychopathology prevalence is a topic of discussion worldwide, affecting 14% of this population globally. Psychodynamic psychotherapy is one approach for the treatment of those conditions. However, besides qualified provision of psychodynamic psychotherapy being hard to reach, dropout is also a relevant issue, occurring in up to 72% of cases. The present study aimed to assess the predictive role of sociodemographic, family, and symptom variables in relation to treatment endings (i.e. non-adherence, dropout, completion) for 747 adolescents who received psychodynamic psychotherapy, through multinomial logistic regression and binary logistic regression. Family income, source of referral, motivation, and baseline clinical complaint were significantly different among ending types. Dropout cases presented higher rule-breaking behavior and externalizing problems scores when compared to treatment completers. Background: Clinical presentations of child and adolescent psychopathology can vary systematically for boys and girls. While network analysis is increasingly being applied to explore psychopathology in adults, there is a dearth of network studies considering differences in symptoms for boys and girls, particularly in developmental trauma‐related symptomatology. Methods: This study involves rural children (n = 375, 39.47% girls) and adolescents (n = 291, 51.20% girls) involved with child protection services in Ontario, Canada. Caregivers completed the Assessment Checklist for Children or Adolescents within the first 6 months of care. Psychometric network analyses were conducted using subscales for boys and girls. Differences were examined via network comparison permutation tests, moderated network models, and independent t‐tests. Results: Attachment‐related interpersonal difficulties were the most central nodes in the child and adolescent networks for both boys and girls. Emotional dysregulation also had high strength centrality for adolescents. While network comparison tests found the overall network structures and global network strength to be invariant between boys and girls for children and adolescents, moderated network models and independent t‐tests revealed several differences with regards to the expression of specific symptoms. Among children, girls exhibited more indiscriminate and pseudomature interpersonal behaviors, whereas boys expressed significantly more non‐reciprocal interpersonal behaviors and self‐injury. Adolescent girls exhibited more behavioral dysregulation and suicide discourse in the moderated network model; t‐tests also indicated higher levels of emotional dysregulation, negative self‐image, and other items considered clinically important complex trauma symptoms (e.g., distrust of adults, confused belonging). Discussion: This study supports evidence of differences in the expression of complex trauma symptomatology for boys and girls. Additionally, girls exhibit more symptoms, in general. Consistent with the transdiagnostic conceptualization of the consequences of developmental trauma, findings demonstrate the primacy of attachment‐specific difficulties and emotion dysregulation. Overwhelming evidence shows that poor family functioning is positively associated with adolescent psychopathology, but the psychological mechanism between the two has not been thoroughly explicated. Additionally, the reciprocal interdependence between family members regarding this association has been largely ignored in the literature. The present study filled those prominent gaps by evaluating a conceptually important but empirically less studied factor—materialism—in this association using the actor-partner interdependence framework. A convenience sample of 1330 mother-child dyads (pairs) with 14- to 17-year-old adolescents participated in this study, and the actor-partner interdependence model was employed to analyze this dyadic data. The analyses revealed that mother's materialism was affected by the significant actor and partner effects of both mother's and child's family functioning. Importantly, mother's materialism significantly mediated the negative association between mother's and child's family functioning and child's internalizing and externalizing difficulties. In aggregate, the present findings indicate that mother's materialism stands at a crossroads linking poor family functioning and adolescent psychopathology, and therapists or practitioners working with mothers' materialism could break this vicious linkage. Type I diabetes mellitus (T1D) is a condition typically diagnosed during adolescence. The diagnosis of T1D, combined with the typical changes that occur during this developmental period, can have an impact on the psychopathology of adolescents. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a psychological intervention incorporating new technologies in managing psychopathological aspects among adolescents with T1D. A systematic search was carried out using the PRISMA method in the ProQuest and Web of Science databases, resulting in the screening of 209 studies, of which nine were included. Two evaluators independently and blindly selected and assessed the studies, demonstrating an excellent level of agreement. The age range of participants in the included studies varied from 12 to 21, with the common factor being a T1D diagnosis. The studies examined various variables, such as adherence to treatment, quality of life, and symptoms of depression and anxiety. Many of the studies indicated improvements in these aspects. However, it is crucial to note that the overall quality of the studies was low. Consequently, there is a need for further research on psychological interventions incorporating new technologies, and there is room for improvement in the design quality of such studies. The present study investigates the often observed higher scores on psychopathology in detained girls compared to boys from a maladaptive trait perspective, as conceived by age-specific criterion B assessment of the Alternative Model of Personality Disorders. Participants were detained youth (N = 237; 122 boys; 115 girls, mean age = 15.8 years) from two youth detention centers in Belgium, who completed self-reports on maladaptive traits and psychopathology. Results confirm that the higher rates of psychopathology in incarcerated girls extend to the maladaptive trait level, with particularly higher levels of Emotional Instability and Oddity. In addition, a stronger co-occurrence of psychopathology with maladaptive traits was found for girls, especially for anxious-depressed, angry-irritable, and post-traumatic symptoms. These findings suggest that mental health problems in detained girls appear to be much more related to personality difficulties compared to detained boys, and advocate the inclusion of comprehensive maladaptive trait assessment and gender-sensitive intervention programs for mental health problems in detained youth. Introduction: Children and adolescents with elevated internalizing symptoms are at increased risk for depression, anxiety, and other psychopathology later in life. The present study examined the predictive links between two bioecological factors in early childhood--parental hostility and socioeconomic stress--and children's internalizing symptom class outcomes, while considering the effects of child sex assigned at birth on internalizing symptom development from childhood to adolescence. Materials and Methods: The study used a sample of 1,534 children to test the predictive effects of socioeconomic stress at ages 18 and 27 months; hostile parenting measured at child ages 4-5; and sex assigned at birth on children's internalizing symptom latent class outcomes at child ages 7-9, 10-12, 13-15, and 16-19. Analyses also tested the mediating effect of parenting on the relationship between socioeconomic stress and children's symptom classes. Other covariates included parent depressive symptoms at child ages 4-5 and child race and ethnicity. Results: Analyses identified three distinct heterogenous internalizing symptom classes characterized by relative symptom levels and progression: low (35%); moderate and increasing (41%); and higher and increasing (24%). As anticipated, higher levels of parental hostility in early childhood predicted membership in the higher and increasing symptom class, compared with the low symptom class (odds ratio (OR) = .61, 95% confidence interval (CI) [.48,.77]). Higher levels of early childhood socioeconomic stress were also associated with the likelihood of belonging to the higher-increasing symptom class compared to the low and moderate-increasing classes (OR = .46, 95% CI [.35,.60] and OR = .56, 95% CI [.44,.72], respectively). The total (c = .61) and direct (c' = .57) effects of socioeconomic stress on children's symptom class membership in the mediation analysis were significant (p <.001). Discussion: Study findings suggest that intervening on modifiable bioecological stressors--including parenting behaviors and socioeconomic stressors--may provide important protective influences on children's internalizing symptom trajectories. Objective: Although empathy is known to be a strength, recent studies suggest that empathy can be a risk factor for psychopathology under certain conditions in children. This study examines parental mental illness as such a condition. Further, it aims to investigate whether maladaptive emotion regulation (ER) mediates the relationship between empathy and psychopathological symptoms of children. Methods: Participants were 100 children of parents with a mental illness (55% female) and 87 children of parents without a mental illness (50% female) aged 6 - 16 years and their parents. Results: Greater cognitive empathy was related to more psychopathological symptoms in COPMI, but not in COPWMI. In addition, in COPMI maladaptive ER mediated this relationship. In contrast, greater affective empathy was associated with more psychopathological symptoms regardless of whether parents had a mental illness. There is a growing tendency for mental health disorders to emerge during adolescence. These disorders impair emotional, cognitive, and behavioral functioning, such as unsatisfying peer relationships, disruptive behavior, and decreased academic performance. They also contribute to vulnerability in later adulthood which negatively influences life-long well-being. Thus, research into etiology is imperative to provide implications for prevention and intervention within family and school practices. It is suggested that the onset of psychological disorders, such as depression and anxiety, is closely related to stress levels and patterns of stress reaction. Therefore, considerable research has investigated the link between hereditary factors, economic status, dispositional vulnerability, social relationships, and stress levels. The current study examines existing evidence and identifies multifaceted risk factors for adolescents' mental problems across three layers, including individual traits and personality, family status and practices, as well as peer relationships, and school climate. It is also suggested that factors from these three perspectives interact and are closely interconnected, directly or indirectly contributing to adolescent psychopathology. This document is a correction notice for an article titled "Associations Between Adolescent Pain and Psychopathology in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study." The correction states that the parameter estimates in the original article were mistakenly described as log odds estimates when they were actually probit estimates. The corrected estimates are provided in the main text and supplementary tables. The study found a potential association between pain and psychopathology in twins at age 13, with significant regression coefficients indicating this relationship. Previously institutionalized adolescents show increased risk for psychopathology, though placement into high-quality foster care can partially mitigate this risk. White matter (WM) structure is associated with early institutional rearing and psychopathology in youth. Here we investigate associations between WM structure and psychopathology in previously institutionalized youth. Adolescent psychopathology data were collected using the MacArthur Health and Behavior Questionnaire. Participants underwent diffusion MRI, and data were processed using fixel-based analyses. General linear models investigated interactions between institutionalization groups and psychopathology on fixel metrics. Supplementary analyses also examined the main effects of psychopathology and institutionalization group on fixel metrics. Ever–Institutionalized children included 41 randomized to foster care (Mage=16.6), and 40 to care-as-usual (Mage=16.7)). In addition, 33 participants without a history of institutionalization were included as a reference group (Mage=16.9). Ever–Institutionalized adolescents displayed altered general psychopathology–fixel associations within the cerebellar peduncles, inferior longitudinal fasciculi, corticospinal tract, and corpus callosum, and altered externalizing–fixel associations within the cingulum and fornix. Our findings indicate brain–behavior associations reported in the literature may not be generalizable to all populations. Previously institutionalized youth may develop differential brain development, which in turn leads to altered neural correlates of psychopathology that are still apparent in adolescence.

Considerable support exists for higher-order dimensional conceptualizations of psychopathology in adults. A growing body of work has focused on understanding the structure of general and specific psychopathology in children and adolescents. No prior meta-analysis has examined whether the strength of the general psychopathology factor (p factor)—measured by explained common variance (ECV)—changes from childhood to adolescence. The primary objective of this multilevel meta-analysis was to determine whether general psychopathology strength changes across development (i.e. across ages) in childhood and adolescence. Several databases were searched in November 2021; 65 studies, with 110 effect sizes (ECV), nested within shared data sources, were identified. Included empirical studies used a factor analytic modeling approach that estimated latent factors for child/adolescent internalizing, externalizing, and optionally thought-disordered psychopathology, and a general factor. Studies spanned ages 2–17 years. Across ages, general psychopathology explained over half (~ 56%) of the reliable variance in symptoms of psychopathology. Age-moderation analyses revealed that general factor strength remained stable across ages, suggesting that general psychopathology strength does not significantly change across childhood to adolescence. Even if the structure of psychopathology changes with development, the prominence of general psychopathology across development has important implications for future research and intervention. Adolescence is a period of rapid physical, psychological, and neural maturation that makes youth vulnerable to emerging psychopathology, highlighting the need for improved identification of psychopathology risk indicators. Recently, a higher-order latent psychopathology factor (p-factor) was identified that explains latent liability for psychopathology beyond internalizing and externalizing difficulties. However, recent proposals suggest reconceptualizing the p-factor model in terms of impairments in personality encompassing difficulties in both self-regulation (borderline features) and self-esteem (narcissistic features), but this remains untested. To address this, this study examined the p-factor structure and the contribution of borderline and narcissistic features using two cross-sectional data collections. In Study 1, 974 cisgender adolescents (63% assigned females at birth; age range: 13–19; Mage = 16.68, SD = 1.40) reported on internalizing and externalizing problems (YSR) to test via structural equation models (SEM) different theoretical models for adolescent psychopathology. In Study 2, 725 cisgender adolescents (64.5% assigned females at birth; age range: 13–19; Mage = 16.22, SD = 1.32) reported internalizing and externalizing problems (YSR), borderline personality features (BPFSC-11), and narcissistic personality traits (PNI), to explore, via SEM, the contribution of borderline and narcissistic traits to the p-factor and accounting for gender differences. Results confirmed the utility of a bi-factor model in adolescence. Furthermore, findings highlighted the contribution of borderline features and narcissistic vulnerability to general psychopathology. The study provides the first evidence supporting a p-factor model reconceptualized in terms of personality impairments encompassing difficulties in self-regulation and self-esteem in adolescents. The Proposed Specifiers for Conduct Disorder (PSCD; Salekin in Pers Disord: Theory Res Treat 7:180–191, 2016) scale was designed to assess interrelated psychopathic trait domains in conjunction with symptoms of Conduct Disorder (CD) in children and adolescents (i.e., grandiose-manipulative, callous-unemotional, daring-impulsive). Variable-centered studies have provided support for a four-factor PSCD structure (Salekin et al. in Psychol Assess 34(10):985–992, 2022) in line with other adolescent and adult studies. The current person-centered study used latent profile analysis of the PSCD domains to examine whether theoretically meaningful and empirically robust PSCD subtypes emerged from a diverse sample (70.9% White, 20.1% Black, 3.6% Hispanic, and 5.4% other) of adolescents (modal age = 17) in a military style residential facility (N = 409; Males = 80.6%). As hypothesized, a four-class solution was best, consistent with adult psychopathy subtyping research (Hare et al. in Handbook of Psychopathy 39–79, 2018; Roy et al. in Pers Disord: Theory Res Treat, in press). The PSCD subtype profiles were uniform across sex and race/ethnicity. Adolescents evincing a psychopathic trait propensity profile (elevated on all four PSCD domains) displayed the greatest number of arrests and higher overall externalizing psychopathology, compared to the other three latent classes, as well as higher internalizing psychopathology compared to adolescents with general delinquency. The PSCD provides a sound measure of psychopathic trait propensities in youth and our results offer investigators and clinicians a means for understanding person-centered psychopathic traits versus antisocial profiles among at-risk adolescents. Effectiveness of psychodynamic therapy for adolescents in reducing internalizing and externalizing psychopathology was determined by comparing treated adolescents (86 sessions) with the normative developmental progression in two groups without treatment: healthy and diabetic adolescents. In a three-wave longitudinal study, n = 531 adolescents (n = 303 patients, n = 119 healthy, n = 109 diabetics) and their mothers filled out psychopathology questionnaires (Youth Self-Report and Child Behavior Checklist). Latent growth curve modeling and multilevel modeling were used to analyze and compare within-person symptoms changes across groups. Analyses showed a significant reduction over the course of treatment for internalizing (Cohen's d =.90–.92) and externalizing (d =.58–.72) symptoms, also when the developmental progression of both control groups was accounted for (d =.48–.76). Mothers reported lower levels than their children in internalizing symptoms (p ≤.01) while this discrepancy increased over time for treated adolescents (p =.02). Results established the effectiveness of psychodynamic treatment for adolescents both with externalizing and internalizing symptoms in comparison with growth and change in nonclinical samples. The present study examined high-risk personality traits and associations with psychopathology across multiple levels of a hierarchical-dimensional model of psychopathology in a large adolescent, general population sample. Confirmatory factor analyses were run using data from two randomized controlled trials of Australian adolescents (N = 8,654, mean age = 13.01 years, 52% female). A higher-order model – comprised of general psychopathology, fear, distress, alcohol use/harms, and conduct/inattention dimensions – was selected based on model fit, reliability, and replicability. Indirect-effects models were estimated to examine the unique associations between high-risk personality traits (anxiety sensitivity, negative thinking, impulsivity, and sensation seeking) and general and specific dimensions and symptoms of psychopathology. All personality traits were positively associated with general psychopathology. After accounting for general psychopathology, anxiety sensitivity was positively associated with fear; negative thinking was positively associated with distress; impulsivity was positively associated with conduct/inattention; and sensation seeking was positively associated with alcohol use/harms and conduct/inattention, and negatively associated with fear. Several significant associations between personality traits and individual symptoms remained after accounting for general and specific psychopathology. These findings contribute to our understanding of the underlying structure of psychopathology among adolescents and have implications for the development of personality-based prevention and early intervention programs. The Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology (HiTOP) is a quantitative model of psychopathology. HiTOP proposes that trauma-related distress is a facet of Internalizing psychopathology, but recent evidence with young people suggests that it may reflect a unique dimension of psychopathology. This study assessed the latent structure of child and adolescent psychopathology to determine whether there is evidence of a unique 'Traumatic Stress' dimension, and how dimensions of psychopathology are associated with specific types of childhood adversity and trauma, and suicidal ideation and self-injurious behavior. Participants were children and adolescents aged 1–17 years (N = 1,800) who were in contact with the Danish child protection system due to suspected child abuse. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to determine the optimal latent structure of psychopathology, and structural equation modelling was used to determine how the dimensions of psychopathology were associated with different forms of trauma and adversity and suicidality/self-harm. The best fitting model included three factors of Internalizing, Externalizing, and Traumatic Stress. The Traumatic Stress dimensions was associated with older age, living outside of the family home, parental mental illness, higher levels of parental conflict, and the presence of domestic violence in the child's home. The Traumatic Stress dimension was not associated with suicidality/self-harm. This study provides additional evidence of a distinct dimension of Traumatic Stress among young people. The traditional view on psychiatric disorders as categorical and distinct is being challenged by perspectives emphasizing the relevance of dimensional and transdiagnostic assessment. However, most diagnostic instruments are based on a categorical view with a threshold-approach to disease classification. We here describe algorithms for dimensionalizing the psychopathological ratings of the widely used diagnostic interview for children and adolescents, the Kiddie-Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia – Present and Lifetime Version (K-SADS-PL). We further evaluate the criterion-related construct validity of the dimensionalized attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) scales using Rasch models in a sample of 590 children (mean age 10.29 (.36), 49% girls). The algorithms generate scores of current symptom load, i.e., the sum of clinician-rated symptoms within each disorder assessed with the interview. We found support for counting symptoms of inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity, respectively, but not for a single combined ADHD scale. The algorithms constitute an initial step in creating a framework for clinician-rated dimensional analyses of symptoms derived from the K-SADS-PL, but future studies are needed to further evaluate the construct validity of the remaining scales and the reliability and clinical utility of the method. We believe that our proposed algorithms offer a novel method of dimensional psychopathological assessment, which can be applied in multiple branches of child and adolescent psychiatry. Externalizing psychopathology is highly prevalent in children and adolescents. Yet, current understanding of the externalizing psychopathology spectrum is predominantly founded on cross-sectional and conventional longitudinal designs. Compared to these designs, intensive longitudinal data have greater ecological validity and provide insight into within-person fluctuations and short-term developmental dynamics. In this Special Issue, we bring together a selection of 10 innovative and original empirical articles to demonstrate the benefits of intensive longitudinal data for understanding the development of the externalizing psychopathology spectrum during childhood and adolescence, as well as one thoughtful commentary from leaders in the externalizing psychopathology field. In this Introduction to the Special Issue, we describe the articles included in this Special Issue in relation to study designs, timescales, samples, and statistical modeling techniques. We conclude by considering the implications of intensive longitudinal data for informing and enhancing our understanding of externalizing psychopathology with child and adolescent samples, as well as critical future research directions. Introduction: Mentalization, operationalized as reflective functioning (RF), allows individuals to interpret actions as caused by intentional mental states. Previous research highlighted the gender‐specific associations between adolescents' internalizing and externalizing difficulties and mentalizing impairments. In addition, research suggested that mentalizing facilitates the creation of epistemic trust (ET) to evaluate social information as accurate, reliable, and relevant. However, few investigations explored the concurrent associations between RF, ET, and adolescent psychopathology. Methods: A sample of 447 Italian cisgender adolescents (57% assigned females at birth; age range 12–19 years old; Mage = 15.54, SD = 1.98) self‐reported RF (RFQY‐5), ET towards mother, father, and peers (IPPA) and mental health problems (YSR‐112). Gender‐specific structural equation modeling explored the associations between RF, ET, and internalizing/externalizing problems. Results: Results suggested an excellent fit for the theoretical model and revealed gender‐related associations. In females, findings suggest that ET mediates the association between RF and psychopathology, with indirect associations from RF through ET to lower internalizing and externalizing problems. However, in males, RF and ET display independent associations with psychopathology. Conclusion: Overall, findings suggest that ET might be a transdiagnostic factor playing different roles associated with adolescent psychopathology. Background: Adolescence is a developmental period during which youth experience vulnerability to psychopathology. To build the foundation for a parsimonious psychopathology risk calculator while capturing the complexity and dynamic nature of the environment, the current study aimed to identify distinct risk and resilience profiles with a wide range of environmental factors guided by Bronfenbrenner's biopsychosocial ecological system theory. The association between the early‐mid childhood risk profiles and psychopathology in adolescence were examined. Moreover, the predictive utility of early childhood irritability was evaluated in addition to the risk profiles. Methods: The data from Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study a nation‐wide longitudinal study, were used in the latent profile analyses to identify the risk profiles with family, school, and neighborhood characteristics from 3 to 9 years old. To capture the socio‐environmental and cultural nuances, we extracted three subsamples, including Black/African American (n = 2587), Hispanic/Latinx (n = 1577), and White (n = 776) for separate analyses. Risk profile memberships were used to predict adolescence psychopathology, including depression, anxiety, attention deficits, oppositional defiant disorder, and conduct disorder symptoms. The predictive utility of early childhood irritability above and beyond environmental risk profiles was evaluated using stepwise regression. Results: Three risk profiles were identified in the Hispanic/Latinx and Black/African American subsamples, while four profiles were identified in White subsample. Almost all risk profile membership predicted both internalizing and externalizing psychopathology, while some profiles are predictive of externalizing symptoms only. Higher level of irritability predicted higher symptomatology in all five mental health outcomes above and beyond the environmental profiles. Conclusions: Distinct risk and resilience profiles primarily driven by parent and family characteristics were identified for all three major race/ethnicity groups. Our findings lay the foundation for a more efficient multi‐tiered information gathering process in mental health clinical settings to aid the decision making for intervention and prevention. In the United States (U.S.), premature mortality in adulthood from suicide, alcohol-related disease, and substance overdoses has increased steadily over the past two decades. To better understand these trends, it is necessary to first examine the harmful behaviors that often precede these preventable deaths (i.e., suicidal ideation and attempts, and harmful alcohol and substance use). Representing critical developmental periods in which psychopathology is most likely to emerge, childhood and adolescence provide an informative lens through which to investigate susceptibility to harmful behaviors. This article synthesizes current evidence describing these rising U.S. mortality rates and the prevalence rates of harmful behaviors linked to these types of mortality. A brief selective review of longitudinal research on harmful behaviors in relation to the most relevant categories of child and adolescent psychopathology is then provided. Background: Up to 80% of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) have mental health issues—either emotional or behavioral problems. The underlying mechanisms are still unknown, even if emotional regulation (ER) is considered to play a major role in child and adolescent psychopathology. Several studies link the ability to regulate the intensity and quality of emotions with executive functioning. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the association between executive functions (EFs) and ER and affective problems in children with ASD. Methods: This meta-analysis is based on a literature search of peer-reviewed journals from the following databases: Scopus, ProQuest, Ebsco, Science Direct, Springer Link and Clarivate. We analyzed 15 studies that investigated the link between EF, ER or affective problems (APs) in children and adolescents with ASD aged between 2 and 18 y with ASD. To assess the effect size of the relationship between EF and ER, and EF and AP, 15 studies comprising 54 effect sizes were analyzed. Results: Our findings revealed a small effect size regarding the association between EF and ER, r = 0.331, p = 0.034, and a small effect size regarding the association between EF and AP, r = −0.213, p = 0.024. No significant moderators were found. The results are presented in regard to the two analyses developed, as well as a short review of the studies included in the meta-analysis. Conclusion: Even if there are several limitations of this study, especially considering the small number of studies included, the results suggest that it is worth considering EF as an underlying mechanism for the appearance of emotional or behavioral problems in children with ASD. These findings have important implications for the development of ASD intervention plans, as well as for increasing awareness among specialists about the importance of executive functions in school adjustment and social functioning. Background: Midlife adults are experiencing a crisis of deaths of despair (i.e. deaths from suicide, drug overdose, and alcohol-related liver disease). We tested the hypothesis that a syndrome of despair-related maladies at midlife is preceded by psychopathology during adolescence. Methods: Participants are members of a representative cohort of 1037 individuals born in Dunedin, New Zealand in 1972–73 and followed to age 45 years, with 94% retention. Adolescent mental disorders were assessed in three diagnostic assessments at ages 11, 13, and 15 years. Indicators of despair-related maladies across four domains – suicidality, substance misuse, sleep problems, and pain – were assessed at age 45 using multi-modal measures including self-report, informant-report, and national register data. Results: We identified and validated a syndrome of despair-related maladies at midlife involving suicidality, substance misuse, sleep problems, and pain. Adults who exhibited a more severe syndrome of despair-related maladies at midlife tended to have had early-onset emotional and behavioral disorders [ β = 0.23, 95% CI (0.16–0.30), p < 0.001], even after adjusting for sex, childhood SES, and childhood IQ. A more pronounced midlife despair syndrome was observed among adults who, as adolescents, were diagnosed with a greater number of mental disorders [ β = 0.26, 95% CI (0.19–0.33), p < 0.001]. Tests of diagnostic specificity revealed that associations generalized across different adolescent mental disorders. Conclusions: Midlife adults who exhibited a more severe syndrome of despair-related maladies tended to have had psychopathology as adolescents. Prevention and treatment of adolescent psychopathology may mitigate despair-related maladies at midlife and ultimately reduce deaths of despair. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Early life adversities (ELA), including exposure to childhood maltreatment, deprivation or community violence, rarely occur in isolation. This co-occurrence poses several conceptual and methodological challenges for researchers, who must decide how best to model ELA and its association with outcomes. In this commentary, we discuss how different analytical choices come with their own – often complementary – sets of assumptions, strengths and limitations, which should be carefully considered when designing research on ELA. We then summarize work published in this issue by Sisitsky et al. (Research on Child and Adolescent Psychopathology, 2023), which serves as an important example of how different approaches can be incorporated in research in order to capture ELA as a complex phenomenon, while generating actionable results. Ultimately, such integration can enhance the quality and relevance of research, contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of ELA and its effects on health outcomes, paving the way for more targeted prevention and intervention strategies to promote children's wellbeing. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), including child maltreatment and other adversities in the home context and beyond (e.g., witnessing domestic violence; parental mental illness; parental separation; living in a disadvantaged neighborhood) are prevalent in the population and often covary together. Research based on the construct of ACEs has transformed the field of adult mental health, yet child and adolescent mental health has often been overlooked in this work. This special issue of Research on Child and Adolescent Psychopathology focuses on the developmental science of ACEs and child psychopathology. The research presented here draws on the extensive evidence base that now exists regarding the co-occurrence of common childhood adversities, while informing the integration of theory and research on ACEs with that of developmental psychopathology at large. This Introduction provides an overview of ACEs and child mental health from a developmental psychopathology perspective, with an emphasis on key concepts and recent progress spanning the prenatal period through to adolescence and intergenerational pathways. Models of ACEs that emphasize the multi-dimensional nature of adversity and the importance of developmental timing to risk and protective pathways, have played a driving role in this progress. Adverse childhood experiences are common and have long-term consequences for biological and psychosocial adjustment. We used a person-centered approach to characterize distinct profiles of adversity in early adolescence and examined associations with later cognitive control and psychopathology. The sample included 167 adolescents (47% female) and their primary caregivers who participated in a longitudinal study across four time points (approximately one year between assessments). At Time 1 (Mage = 14 years), we measured seven indicators of adversity: socioeconomic disadvantage, abuse, neglect, household chaos, parent substance use, parent depression, and negative life events. At Times 2–4, adolescents' behavioral performance and functional activation during a cognitive control task were measured. At Time 5, adolescents and their caregiver reported on adolescent internalizing and externalizing symptomatology. Using latent profile analysis, we identified four distinct adversity subgroups: a low exposure group, a neglect group, a household instability group, and a poly-adversity group. These groups significantly differed on subsequent levels of psychopathology, but not cognitive control. Specifically, the poly-adversity group reported significantly higher levels of both internalizing and externalizing symptomatology relative to the low exposure group, and the household instability group demonstrated elevated risk for externalizing symptomatology. When using a cumulative risk approach, higher levels of adversity exposure were associated with significantly worse cognitive control performance (but not neural activation). These results suggest that psychopathology outcomes may be differentially predicted by distinct patterns of risk, and that cognitive control impairment may be more strongly predicted by cumulative risk. Background: Identifying the underlying mechanisms through which adverse childhood experiences affect (ACEs) the mental health of adolescents is of paramount importance for disease prevention in later stages of life. Objective: The present study examines the relationship between ACEs and psychopathology in adolescents from northern Chile and how attachment style (abandonment anxiety and intimacy avoidance) may moderate this relationship. A total of 154 schooled adolescents aged 12 to 17 (M = 15.08, SD = 1.64) completed a series of self-report questionnaires including the Adverse Childhood Experience Questionnaire (ACEs), Experiences in Close Relationships- Relationship Structures (ECR-RS), and Youth Self Report (YSR-18). Results: The data analysis was carried out using SPSS version 25, which included descriptive analysis, one-way ANOVA, and Spearman correlation analysis. To address moderation analysis, the PROCESS macro extension version 4.1 was employed. In this process, the bootstrap method was applied to construct confidence intervals, and the pick-a-point approach was used to define the levels of the moderating variable. According to the results, 80.3% of the sample experienced one or more ACEs, and 16.4% reported experiencing at least three. Furthermore, the variables under study exhibited significant correlations with each other, except for intimacy avoidance, which showed no correlation with ACEs (rho = -0.10; p = 0.273). When considering abandonment anxiety as a moderating variable, the direct effect of ACEs on externalizing symptoms showed statistically significant changes (β = 0.60, p = 0.03). No other moderating effects were found according to the proposed models. Conclusion: In childhood, the accumulation of ACEs is associated with the development of psychopathology in adolescents from northern Chile, specifically with the presence of internalizing and externalizing symptoms. These findings suggest that lower levels of abandonment anxiety could mitigate the effects of ACEs on adolescent psychopathology, while higher levels of abandonment anxiety could exacerbate these effects on psychopathology. There is an emerging, many-dimensional model of human functioning that has yet to be rigorously tested in adolescent psychopathology. The model is based, in part, on research suggesting stronger predictive power at the level of single items compared to the commonly used smaller number of higher-level constructs represented by scores or factors. Here, the model is tested in research relevant for the understanding how psychopathology relates to adolescent school enjoyment. We compared, explained, and clustered machine learning model results from a set of 99 self-reported items from different instruments that measured the behavioral and social-emotional problems of adolescents to predict school enjoyment. There is support for a many-dimensional model. Individual items had unique variances beyond noise that incrementally added out-of-sample predictive power above construct-level prediction, particularly for nonlinear machine learning classifiers. Explainable machine learning uncovered important predictors of low school enjoyment, and these were specific nuances of withdrawn/depressive behaviors, elevated fears and anxieties, lowered sensation-seeking, and some conduct problems—what we term risk nuances (cf. risk factors). Clustering further identified shared risk nuances among different groups of individuals with low school enjoyment. Our results suggest that item nuances are important in revealing many ways in which adolescents' behavioral and social-emotional problems relate to school enjoyment at the individual and group levels. Background: Numerous studies have demonstrated that low, unstable, or contingent self-esteem negatively affects youth development and is linked to adolescent psychopathology. However, most previous studies have applied variable-oriented approaches, and less is known about the natural combination of self-esteem facets in school-aged adolescents, how parental conditional regard affects self-esteem profiles, and how these profiles relate to self-kindness, self-judgement, and life satisfaction. Methods: By employing a longitudinal person-oriented approach (i.e., latent profile analysis and latent transition analysis) on two-wave longitudinal data from 587 German secondary school students (52.3% female, Mage=13.52 years), this study aims to (1) identify adolescents' self-esteem profiles based on the level, stability, and contingency of self-esteem; (2) examine the impact of parental conditional regard on the self-esteem profiles explained using self-determination theory; and (3) examine these profiles' relationship with self-kindness, self-judgement, and life satisfaction. Results: Four self-esteem profiles were derived: optimal-secure (~ 8%), good (~ 18%), average (~ 36%), and low-insecure (~ 38%). The results reveal a concerningly high proportion as well as a high stability of low-insecure self-esteem (~ 98%) and indicate the strong negative influence of parental conditional regard on the development of optimal-secure self-esteem. Furthermore, the results demonstrate strong correlations between optimal-secure self-esteem, highly developed self-kindness, and high life satisfaction. Conclusions: Using a longitudinal person-oriented approach, it was possible to identify a group with highly vulnerable self-esteem, characterised by particularly low self-kindness, strong self-judgment, and lower life satisfaction. Background: Early onset anorexia nervosa (EOAN) is a subclassification of AN, defined by an onset before 14 years, and characterized by specific demographic, neuropsychological, and clinical features. The present study aims to provide naturalistic data on a wide sample with EOAN, focusing on psychopathological and nutritional changes occurring in the context of a multidisciplinary hospital intervention, as well as the rate of rehospitalizations during a 1‐year follow‐up. Method: Observational, naturalistic study adopting standardized criteria for EOAN (onset before 14 years). EOAN were compared to adolescent‐onset AN (AOAN) patients (onset after 14 years) by demographic, clinical, psycho and treatment variables. Psychopathology was assessed at admission (T0) and discharge (T1) with self‐administered psychiatric scales for children and adolescents (SAFA) subtests for Eating Disorders, Anxiety, Depression, Somatic symptoms, and Obsessions. Then, potential differences of T0–T1 changes in psychopathological and nutritional variables were assessed. Finally, rates of re‐hospitalizations at 1‐year post‐discharge follow‐up were assessed with Kaplan–Meier analyses. Results: Two‐hundred thirty‐eight AN individuals (EOAN = 85) were enrolled. When compared to AOAN, EOAN participants were more frequently males (X2 = 5.360, p =.021), more frequently received nasogastric‐tube feeding (X2 = 10.313, p =.001), and risperidone (X2 = 19.463, p <.001), obtained a greater T0‐T1 improvement in body‐mass index percentage (F[1.229] = 15.104, p <.001, η2 = 0.030), with higher 1‐year freedom from re‐hospitalization (hazard ratio, 0.47; Log‐rank: X2 = 4.758, p =.029). Conclusion: In this study, describing the broadest EOAN sample available in literature so far, EOAN patients received specific interventions and obtained better outcomes at discharge and follow‐up when compared to AOAN. The organization of the Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology (HiTOP) model provides unique opportunities to evaluate whether neural risk measures operate as indicators of broader latent liabilities (e.g., externalizing proneness) or narrower expressions (e.g., antisociality and alcohol abuse). Following this approach, the current study recruited a sample of 182 participants (54% female) who completed measures of externalizing psychopathology (also internalizing) and associated traits. Participants also completed three tasks (Flanker-No Threat, Flanker-Threat, and Go/No-Go tasks) with event-related potential (ERP) measurement. Three variants of two research domain criteria (RDoC)-based neurophysiological indicators—P3 and error-related negativity (ERN)—were extracted from these tasks and used to model two latent ERP factors. Scores on these two ERP factors independently predicted externalizing factor scores when accounting for their covariance with sex—suggesting distinct neural processes contributing to the broad externalizing factor. No predictive relation with the broad internalizing factor was found for either ERP factor. Analyses at the finer-grained level revealed no unique predictive relations of either ERP factor with any specific externalizing symptom variable when accounting for the broad externalizing factor, indicating that ERN and P3 index general liability for problems in this spectrum. Overall, this study provides new insights about neural processes in externalizing psychopathology at broader and narrower levels of the HiTOP hierarchy. General Scientific Summary: The Hierarchical Taxonomy Model of Psychopathology argues that some etiological factors might operate at broader levels of the psychopathological spectrum, conferring general risk for clinical problems. Objective: Internalizing and externalizing disorders are developmentally complex entities with multifactorial pathogenesis. The findings from recent research on the transdiagnostic responsibility of self-regulation and rumination suggest that their deficits underlie all psychiatric disorders in adults, and yet only a small number of studies have been conducted on the population of adolescents. Method: The clinical study included 162 adolescents, divided into two clinical groups, treated in the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in Hospital. The first clinical group consisted of 91 adolescents with internalizing mental disorders, with the second clinical group consisting of 71 adolescents with externalizing mental disorders. They had been referred for psychodiagnostic assessment after their first psychiatric examination, and were diagnosed according to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-)10 criteria, the diagnoses confirmed through structured clinical interviews. They additionally met the inclusion and exclusion criteria for participating in this study. Results: The results suggest that self-regulation significantly and negatively predicted symptoms of mental disorder in both clinical groups, and rumination significantly predicted symptoms of anxiety and depression in the group of adolescents suffering from internalizing disorders. Conclusions: The findings emphasize the importance of maladaptive selfregulation as a transdiagnostic factor underlying various forms of psychopathology in adolescents, and the importance of rumination as a unique transdiagnostic process related to different disorders in the internalizing dimension. Recent initiatives have focused on integrating transdiagnostic biobehavioral processes or dispositions with dimensional models of psychopathology. Toward this goal, biobehavioral traits of affiliative capacity (AFF) and inhibitory control (INH) hold particular promise as they demonstrate transdiagnostic stability and predictive validity across developmental stages and differing measurement modalities. The current study employed data from different modes of measurement in a sample of 1830 children aged 5–10 years to test for associations of AFF and INH, individually and interactively, with broad dimensions of psychopathology. Low AFF, assessed via parent-report, evidenced predictive relations with distress- and externalizing-related problems. INH as assessed by cognitive-task performance did not relate itself to either psychopathology dimension, but it moderated the effects observed for low AFF, such that high INH protected against distress symptoms in low-AFF participants, whereas low INH amplified distress and externalizing symptoms in low-AFF participants. Current understanding of the predictive validity of callous-unemotional (CU) traits is limited by (a) the focus on externalizing psychopathology and antisocial behaviors, (b) a lack of long-term prospective longitudinal data, (c) samples comprised of high-risk or low-risk individuals. We tested whether adolescent CU traits and conduct problems were associated with theoretically relevant adult outcomes 12–18 years later. Participants were drawn from two studies: higher-risk Fast Track (FT; n = 754) and lower-risk Child Development Project (CDP; n = 585). FT: conduct problems positively predicted externalizing and internalizing psychopathology and partner violence, and negatively predicted health, wellbeing, and education. Three conduct problems × CU traits interaction effects were also found. CDP: CU traits positively predicted depression and negatively predicted health and education; conduct problems positively predicted externalizing and internalizing psychopathology and substance use, and negatively predicted wellbeing. Delay discounting is a well-established risk factor for risky behaviors and the development of externalizing spectrum disorders. Building upon recent work that developed a novel cortical marker of delay discounting (C-DD) in adult samples, the objective of this study was to test whether the C-DD relates to delay discounting and subsequently externalizing pathology in adolescent samples. The current study used two samples: 9992 early adolescents participating in the ABCD study (Mage = 9.93 years old, 48.7% female), and 56 early adolescents recruited from the community (Mage = 12.27 years old, 55.4% female). Cortical thickness was estimated using the FreeSurfer standard pipeline, and the cortical marker of delay discounting (C-DD) was calculated based on procedures outlined by the initial validation study. All data are cross-sectional in nature. As expected, C-DD was positively related to delay discounting in the ABCD sample, even after accounting for age, biological sex, collection site and data quality indicators. Moreover, results showed that C-DD was discriminately associated with externalizing, but not internalizing, symptoms in both samples of young adolescents. Findings replicate those found in adult samples, suggestive that C-DD may be a useful neuroanatomical marker of youth delay discounting. Replication of findings in other samples will be needed to determine whether C-DD has translational relevance to understanding externalizing psychopathology in adolescent samples. Background: Increasing research efforts have focused on understanding why some individuals develop severe psychopathology after exposure to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). Sleep disturbances (insomnia, nightmares, and sleep disorders) are prevalent sequelae of ACEs and associated with psychopathology; however, there is no meta‐analytic evidence on whether sleep disturbance functions as a transdiagnostic mediator in the relationship between ACEs and psychopathology (internalizing/externalizing disorders and psychosis) in children and adolescents. Methods: Systematic searches in three databases (PubMed; PsycINFO; Web of Science) identified 98 articles (N = 402,718; age range 1–17 years) and the present study used a novel two‐stage meta‐analytic structural equation model to investigate whether ACEs predict psychopathology through sleep disturbance. Subgroup analyses determined potential biases due to study design (cross‐sectional vs. longitudinal) and geographical differences (Western vs. non‐Western countries). Sensitivity analyses evaluated the influence of early childhood (<5 years old) and overlapping symptoms (i.e., nightmares and trauma symptoms) on model stability. Results: The pooled correlations among ACEs, sleep disturbance, and psychopathology were significant; the effect sizes ranged from moderate to high (r = 0.21 to r = 0.29). The indirect effect from ACEs via sleep disturbance to psychopathology was significant (β = 0.05, 95% CI [0.04, 0.06]). The direct effect of ACEs on psychopathology was significant (β = 0.18, 95% CI 0.13–0.24). Subgroup analyses revealed larger effects for cross‐sectional studies than longitudinal studies (Δ χ2 (3) = 9.71, p = 0.021). Sensitivity analyses revealed stable and consistent results. Conclusions: The present meta‐analytic results indicate that sleep disturbance is a transdiagnostic mediator in the relationship between ACEs and psychopathology among children and adolescents. Further research is required to determine the synergistic effects between sleep disturbance and other risk mechanisms, and elucidate the complex pathways that lead to disorder in the aftermath of childhood adversities. Parenting styles associated with maternal depression are a risk factor for adolescent psychopathology, and maternal attributional styles may be a key mechanism in this relationship. Mother‐adolescent dyads (N = 180; 96 male; ages 10–15) completed in‐person interactions and then the mothers participated in a video‐mediated recall procedure to assess maternal attributions. Maternal depression was associated with negative attributions. Negative attributions were associated with low parental acceptance, aggressive parenting, and low positive parenting. Positive maternal attributions were associated with less aggressive parenting, and more positive parenting during one interaction task. Adolescent externalizing behaviors were associated with negative attributions. Future research should evaluate whether maternal attributions mediate the association between maternal depression and both parenting behaviors and adolescent mental health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Within the Dimensional Model of Adversity and Psychopathology, extant research shows that exposure to threat—including emotional, physical, and sexual abuse—is linked to psychopathology among adolescents; problems with emotion regulation may, at least in part, explain this association. Both theoretical and empirical work also suggests that emotion regulation difficulties—particularly access to emotion regulation strategies—may mediate the relation between threat and self-injurious thoughts and behavior, though no studies to date have explicitly tested this model. The current study tested relations between threat, limited access to emotion regulation strategies, and self-injurious thoughts and behaviors among high-risk youth across an 18-month follow-up. The sample consisted of 180 adolescents (Mage = 14.89; SD = 1.35; ages 12–17; 71.7% female; 78.9% White; 55.0% heterosexual) recruited from an inpatient psychiatric unit. Threat was assessed at baseline using the abuse subscales from Childhood Trauma Questionnaire. Access to emotion regulation strategies was assessed using the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale at baseline, 6-, and 12-months. Presence (versus absence) of non-suicidal self-injury and suicidal ideation severity were assessed at baseline, 12-, and 18-months using the Self-Injurious Thoughts and Behaviors Interview and the Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire-JR, respectively. After accounting for baseline levels of the mediator, outcome, and depressive symptoms, structural equation models supported the role of 12-month access to emotion regulation strategies as a mediator between baseline threat and 18-month suicidal ideation and non-suicidal self-injury. Treatment aimed at bolstering access to emotion regulation strategies may help reduce suicide risk among youth who have experienced childhood abuse. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Externalizing psychopathology is a strong risk factor for substance use, whereas the role of internalizing manifestations of distress, and anxiety in particular, in predicting substance use remains unclear. Studies have suggested that anxiety may be either a protective or risk factor for substance use. The present study aimed to clarify evidence for anxiety-specific associations with substance use, examining sex and developmental period (adolescence vs. adulthood) as potential moderators that may help explain conflicting results in the literature. In a longitudinal twin sample, cross-sectional associations of anxiety with substance use differed in adolescents and adults and in girls/women and boys/men. Controlling for externalizing psychopathology and depression, anxiety was associated with reduced substance use in adolescent girls and increased substance use in adult women. In contrast, anxiety-specific associations with substance use were not significant in boys and men. Possible explanations for these contrasting results across development and sex are discussed. Introduction: Relatively little is known about individual differences in adolescent psychological flexibility and its associations with symptoms of stress and depression. This study examined different profiles of adolescent stress and depressive symptoms and their associations with developing psychological flexibility before the critical educational transition. Methods: The data were derived from a general sample of 740 Finnish ninth‐grade adolescents (Mage = 15.7 years, 57% female) who were assessed twice during the final grade of their basic education. The data were analyzed using growth mixture modeling. Results: Four profiles of stress and depressive symptoms were identified during a school year: (1) no stress and no depressive symptoms (None; 69%); (2) mild and decreasing stress and depressive symptoms (Decreasing; 15%); (3) low but increasing stress and depressive symptoms (Increasing; 6%); and (4) high and stable levels of stress and depressive symptoms (High; 10%). The adolescents in these profiles differed from each other in their initial levels and changes of psychological flexibility. The initial level of psychological flexibility was highest in the no‐symptom profile group. We observed simultaneous change trends in symptoms and psychological flexibility during a school year. When symptoms decreased, psychological flexibility increased, and when symptoms increased, psychological flexibility decreased. Conclusions: A bidirectional pattern of relationships between psychological flexibility and psychological symptoms was found. Despite initially high level of skills in psychological flexibility, some adolescents, unexpectedly, experienced increased symptoms of stress and depression during the school year. Introduction: This study investigated the differential trajectories and relevant determinants of depressive symptoms in adolescents by following cohorts that included junior, senior, and vocational high school adolescents, over a 3‐year period in Taiwan. Methods: Longitudinal data were obtained from 575 adolescents who participated in the Taiwan Adolescent to Adult Longitudinal Study. Data analysis included latent class growth with time‐varying covariate, univariate, and multivariate analysis. Results: A three‐class ("low but increasing trajectory," "moderate and stable trajectory," and "high but decreasing trajectory") model fit the data of the cohort. Our findings indicated that 29%, 38%, and 33% of the adolescents were in the low but increasing, moderate and stable, and high but decreasing trajectories, respectively. After confounders were controlled for, bullying experiences were identified as a risk factor for depressive symptoms. The protective factors against depressive symptoms included resilience and peer and social support. Conclusions: The transitions between different educational stages critically influence the depressive symptoms of adolescents, and the adolescents follow different depressive trajectories, that have different etiology. Therefore, identifying adolescents at high risk for depression and designing student‐centered intervention programs through individualized and multidimensional assessment of depressive symptoms are crucial for adolescents. Introduction: Nonsuicidal self‐injury (NSSI) in adolescents is a growing public health concern, demanding preventive measures, particularly among high school students. Based on social cognitive theory (SCT), self‐efficacy coupled with outcome expectations, social support, self‐regulation, and behavioral intention, determine the likelihood of engaging in such a behavior. Thus, the present study was to investigate the effect of a SCT‐based educational intervention on NSSI prevention in female high school students. Methods: This randomized educational intervention trial was conducted on 191 female high school students, aged 15–17 years (15.95 ± 0.59) (viz. 99 individuals in intervention group and 92 controls). Intervention group attended five SCT‐based educational intervention sessions concerning NSSI prevention. Data were then collected by three self‐administered questionnaires. The first questionnaire was to measure demographic variables and the second one, intermediate outcome measure, was implemented to evaluate SCT constructs. The third questionnaire also measured NSSI (final outcome measure). Data were analyzed using SPSS software v.24. Results: After controlling the pretest scores, the repeated‐measure multivariate analysis of covariance revealed a significant time and group interaction in multivariate (F = 154.8, p <.001) and univariate analysis, which is in favor of the effectiveness of educational intervention on changing the mean scores of NSSI and all SCT constructs. SCT constructs explained 41% of the variance in conforming intention for NSSI prevention (p <.001). Introduction: Adolescent mental health problems are widespread; however, there are still very few data on risk and protective factors for general and specific psychopathology. This study examined the structure of common mental health problems in Russian adolescents and the associations of temperamental effortful control and perceived school safety to the latent factors of adolescent mental health, taking age and gender into account. Methods: Data were collected on 1850 adolescents (53% female) aged 12–18 using the self‐report Eurasian Child Mental Health Study questionnaire, the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, and the abbreviated Effortful Control scale of the Early Adolescent Temperament Questionnaire‐Revised. Structural equation modeling was used to evaluate the structure of common mental health problems and to examine the associations with age, effortful control, and school safety. Results: The five‐correlated‐factors model comprising internalizing, body dissatisfaction, psychosomatics, externalizing, and substance use, and the bifactor‐(S‐1) models with internalizing and externalizing as reference domains and four specific factors showed an adequate fit to the data and sufficient reliability and validity. Analyses established full metric invariance of these models across gender. Effortful control showed a general association with adolescent mental health problems and a specific association with externalizing problems. School safety showed specific negative associations with externalizing and substance use and with girls' internalizing problems. Conclusions: These findings provide a strong basis for further cross‐cultural research into the structure and determinants of adolescent mental health and highlight the need for effective interventions. We aimed to determine differences between adolescents with non-suicidal self-harm with and without a history of suicide attempt (SA). Sixty-eight adolescents with a mean age of 15.6 years (SD = 1.5) attending child and adolescent psychiatric outpatient clinics for repeated self-harm in Oslo, Norway, were included. A battery of instruments was used to assess sociodemographic information and psychopathology such as Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) diagnoses, emotional and behavioral problems, borderline symptoms, depression, hopelessness, suicidal ideation, and history of SA. Twenty-six participants (38.2%) reported a lifetime history of SA. Compared to the participants without a history of SA, those with an SA history had used a higher number of methods of self-harm and methods with higher lethality and had higher degrees of emotional and behavioral problems. They also scored higher in depressive symptoms, borderline pathology, emotional dysregulation, hopelessness, and suicidal ideation. History of SA was independently associated with perceived moderate to high risk of death on the most severe episode of self-harm (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 15.93; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.96–129.66), a longer duration (months) since self-harm debut (aOR, 1.07; 95% CI, 1.01–1.13), and suicidal ideation severity (aOR, 1.05; 95% CI, 1.01–1.11). Parental report of behavioral problems associated with SA suggested a strong association with externalizing problems. A combination of having a high level of psychopathology, externalizing problems, an extended history of self-harm behavior and use of more lethal self-harm methods seems to entail a significantly increased risk for making SAs among adolescents with non-suicidal self-harm. Non-suicidal self-harm (NSSH) with suicide attempt may be distinctive from NSSH without suicide attempt. Adolescents with NSSH with suicide attempt had relatively greater psychopathology. Limited research has examined how multiple forms of oppression (e.g., racism, heterosexism, transphobia)—manifesting across multiple levels (e.g., interpersonal, structural)—can place Black and Latinx lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other sexual/gender minority (LGBTQ+) adolescents at increased risk for internalizing psychopathology, including depression. Utilizing a national sample of 2,561 Black and Latinx LGBTQ+ adolescents (aged 13–17), we examined associations among depressive symptoms and several adolescent-focused manifestations of stigma, including: (a) interpersonal racial/ethnic bullying, (b) interpersonal sexual orientation bullying, (c) nine state-level forms of structural stigma or protection for LGBTQ+ adolescents, and (d) a new adolescent-focused composite index of state-level anti-LGBTQ+ structural stigma. Racial/ethnic bullying and sexual orientation bullying were found to be prevalent among the sample and were associated—both independently and jointly—with increased depressive symptoms. One harmful state-level anti-LGBTQ+ structural stigma indicator (i.e., anti-LGBTQ+ community attitudes) and seven protective state-level anti-LGBTQ+ structural stigma indicators (e.g., conversion therapy bans) were associated with odds of depressive symptoms, in the expected directions. Black and Latinx LGBTQ+ adolescents residing in states with greater overall anti-LGBTQ+ structural stigma reported increased depressive symptoms, even when adjusting for racial/ethnic and sexual orientation bullying. Additionally, Black and Latinx LGBTQ+ adolescents living in the most stigmatizing states demonstrated 32% increased odds of depressive symptoms, as compared to those living in the most LGBTQ+ affirming states. Multilevel, intersectional interventions could have optimal effects on the mental health and resilience of Black and Latinx LGBTQ+ adolescents. General Scientific Summary: The mental health problems of U.S. Black and Latinx lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other sexual/gender minority (LGBTQ+) adolescents may be driven, in part, due to their exposure to multiple, interlocking forms of oppression (e.g., racism, heterosexism, transphobia) manifesting at multiple levels (e.g., interpersonal, structural). Adolescents' suicidal behavior frequently is preceded by interpersonal stress, but not all who experience distress attempt to end their lives. Recent theories have posited individual differences in stress-related inflammatory reactivity may be associated with psychopathology risk; this study examined inflammatory reactivity as a moderator of the prospective association between interpersonal stress and adolescents' suicidal behavior. Participants included 157 at-risk adolescent females (ages 12 to 16 years) and assessed individual differences in proinflammatory cytokine responses to a brief laboratory-based social stressor, both interpersonal and non-interpersonal life events, and suicidal behavior over an 18-month follow-up period. Measuring levels of the key proinflammatory cytokines interleukin-1β (IL-1β), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) before and after an experimentally-induced social stressor, results revealed that blunted cytokine reactivity heightened the effect of high interpersonal stress exposure on risk for suicidal behaviors over the subsequent 9 months. Significant effects were not revealed for non-interpersonally themed stress. Finding highlight the urgent need for more research examining inflammation reactivity among adolescents.
