China's grand strategies (i.e., the Belt and Road Initiative and the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area) have expedited the popularity of full‐time degree‐bearing study in mainland China. Associated with the exponential growth of inward student populations are proliferating concerns about the capacity of non‐majority/non‐local students to 'integrate' and belong in their host universities/colleges. The extant literature on university/college belonging often positions non‐majority/non‐local students as being academically and culturally deficient and subsequently being otherised in the host university community. Yet, their agency in managing the prevailing image and 'otherisation', and constructing their own sense of belonging to university, has received scant attention. This qualitative study is a substantive and theoretical contribution to the literature on university belonging, which has been preoccupied with non‐majority/non‐local students in the classic South–North international student mobility. This study deployed the concepts of politics of belonging and place‐belongingness and canvassed the senses of belonging to university among inbound Hong Kong students in mainland higher education, which has witnessed a growing Hong Kong student population in recent years. The collected interview data indicated that these border‐crossing Hong Kong students found themselves categorised as 'underachievers' with 'poor mathematics' yet 'proficient in English' in the mainland campus setting, where they did not feel they fully belonged. Responding to the paradoxical identity/belonging politics, they performed three forms of place‐belongingness by dismantling, accommodating or counter‐stereotyping the ascribed classifications in order to legitimate their own participation in the mainland Chinese university. Although socioeconomic disadvantage is linked with academic underachievement, many children from low‐income backgrounds perform well in school. Which modifiable factors predict this academic resilience? We examine between‐ and within‐person predictors of one important academic metric – mathematics performance – across adolescence in 1715 (796 male, 919 female) youth living in poverty in Ireland, using data from three waves (9, 13, and 17/18 years) of the Growing Up in Ireland study. Using linear mixed models, math performance was worse when adolescents had more socioemotional and behavioural difficulties, more child–parent relationship conflict, parents had lower expectations of the adolescent's educational achievement, and when primary caregivers had less education. Adolescents who had better intellectual self‐concept and attended a non‐disadvantaged school had greater math performance. This research adds to the growing body of work suggesting academic resilience is dynamic and multisystemic; it provides potential targets at multiple levels to promote such resilience. In recent years, educational data mining has emerged as a growing discipline focused on developing models for predicting academic performance. The primary objective of this research was to tune classification models to predict academic performance in secondary school. The dataset employed for this study encompassed information from 19,545 high school students. We used descriptive statistics to characterise information contained in personal, school, and socioeconomic variables. We implemented two data mining techniques, namely artificial neural networks (ANN) and support vector machines (SVM). Parameter optimisation was conducted through five–fold cross–validation, and model performance was assessed using accuracy and F 1 –Score. The results indicate a functional dependence between predictor variables and academic performance. The algorithms demonstrated an average performance exceeding 80% accuracy. Notably, ANN outperformed SVM in the dataset analysed. This type of methodology could help educational institutions to predict academic underachievement and thus generate strategies to improve students' academic performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper argues that processes of marginalisation experienced by white working-class students provide insight into systemic problems with the English education system. White British students eligible for Free School Meals (FSM) are a low attaining group. This research investigates factors affecting their engagement and achievement. Fieldwork in three comprehensive secondary schools in a London borough used qualitative methods to gather data on the perspectives of staff, students and parents. Using Bourdieu's conceptual tools to guide the analysis, the study found that performance pressure and funding cuts can result in an institutional habitus which privileges academic attainment, side-lines the social and emotional aspects of learning and misrecognises working-class capitals. Such habitus fosters pedagogic practices which reduce levels of felt safety and limit opportunities to actively engage and exercise agency in the classroom. Academic underachievement refers to school performance which falls below expectations. Focusing on the pivotal first stage of education, we explored a quantitative measure of underachievement using genomically predicted achievement delta (GPAΔ), which reflects the difference between observed and expected achievement predicted by genome-wide polygenic scores. We analyzed the relationship between GPAΔ at age 7 and achievement trajectories from ages 7 to 16, using longitudinal data from 4175 participants in the Twins Early Development Study to assess empirically the extent to which students regress to their genomically predicted levels by age 16. We found that the achievement of underachievers and overachievers who deviated from their genomic predictions at age 7 regressed on average by one-third towards their genomically predicted levels. We also found that GPAΔ at age 7 was as predictive of achievement trajectories as a traditional ability-based index of underachievement. Targeting GPAΔ underachievers might prove cost-effective because such interventions seem more likely to succeed by going with the genetic flow rather than swimming upstream, helping GPAΔ underachievers reach their genetic potential as predicted by their GPS. However, this is a hypothesis that needs to be tested in intervention research investigating whether GPAΔ underachievers respond better to the intervention than other underachievers. Atypical responses to teacher rewards, discipline and different forms of instructional methods have been identified as potential contributors to disruptive behavior, low school engagement, and academic underachievement in children with elevated callous-unemotional (CU) traits. To date, research on CU traits in schools has relied on interview or questionnaire methods and has predominantly been conducted in Western countries. Thus, the present study aims to investigate the relationships between CU traits and children's responses to teacher rewards, discipline and instructional methods in the Chinese preschool context using classroom observation. Eight teachers (7 females, 1 male; M = 37.66 years) and 116 children (56% girls; M = 5.16 years) from two mainstream Chinese preschools participated in the study. Of the 116 eligible children, the behavior of 108 children from four classes were observed during classroom activities. Findings indicated that CU traits were not related to children's responses to discipline, nor did CU traits moderate the relationship between instructional methods and children's academic engagement. Higher CU traits predicted a greater frequency of one-to-one teacher-child interaction. Our findings offer initial insights into the potential of early school-based interventions in fostering engagement and prosocial behavior among children with CU traits. However, they also highlight the need for additional support for preschool teachers, who face the challenge of managing these high-risk children who appear to require more individual time and attention. This study aims to evaluate the English language textbook "We Can" for the early elementary stage in light of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) standards. The researcher used the descriptive analytical approach represented in the content analysis tool and the questionnaire to achieve the studies. objectives. The two tools included 5 Cs standards: communications, connections, cultures, comparisons, and communities. The study sample consisted of four books for the English language curriculums. "We Can," including the student's book and activity book for primary. (first, second, and third) grades. The participants of the study consisted of (249) male and female English language teachers at the primary stage in Makkah City to investigate their perceptions of the availability of ACTFL standards in the English language curricula. The results of the study revealed the following: communications. standards in the context of English language curriculums came at a rate of 74.9%, which is a high degree of availability. From the point of view of the perceptions, the degree of agreement was high, and the general average for the dimension was 3.43. The degree of availability of communities' standards is high, at a rate of 13.5%, and the general average for the dimension is 3.5. from the point of view of the participants of the study. The connections' standards came at a rate of 2.2%, and the general average was 3.34, which is a medium degree of availability. As for cultures' standards came at a rate of 4.5%, the general average was 2.38, and comparisons' standards came at a rate of 5%, and the general average was 2.31. Finally, the study ended with some recommendations and suggestions for further. studies such as designing and developing the English language. curriculums for the primary stages in light of the ACTFL.

Academic underachievement of students from disadvantaged backgrounds is an ongoing and unresolved problem. Schools serving vulnerable communities often fail to meaningfully engage their students who are often exposed to significant family and environmental adversities. However, where the educational landscape is overwhelmed with neoliberal processes of accountability and testing, education generally comes to be understood as a cognitive process with little attention to the bodily or affective dimensions of learning. This paper draws on new theoretical ideas in affect and embodiment to build a case for an embodied, affective and creative pedagogy for students who live with poverty and adversity. Specifically, I report on research that investigates how two teachers utilised Creative and Body-based (CBL) provocations to redesign curriculum for disadvantaged students in their sites. In utilising the analysis of two narrative portraits, I highlight examples of bodily affectivity as well as affective pedagogical practices that impact on students' capacity to learn and teachers' capacity to teach. Analysis suggests that embodied and creative approaches enable new forms of communication and learner identities through bodies, senses and imaginings. Such approaches provide much needed affective conditions that 'hook' students in, encourage dialogue and help them to realise their potential as learners. Outcomes of this work signal an epistemological and pedagogical shift toward understanding bodies and creativity as agents of learning and knowledge production. By engaging with notions of a 'learning body' potential exists to challenge neoliberal practices in complex classrooms and support young people to foster stronger connections, hope and a re-inspired aspiration to learn. Although illegal, sexual harassment is endemic in US schools, with students perceiving that school officials ignore complaints of harassment. Research findings have linked school climate tolerant of sexual harassment to peer sexual harassment (PSH) and school outcomes, yet there is a need to better understand these relationships. This cross‐sectional study examined whether there was an indirect effect of school climate tolerant of sexual harassment on disengagement from school, individually and serially, through experiences of PSH victimization and feeling safe at school in a sample of 171 predominantly Black and White girls (14–19 years old) attending high school in the wider Memphis, Tennessee area. The findings supported that a climate tolerant of sexual harassment was indirectly related to school disengagement through PSH and feeling less safe. These findings add to the literature by demonstrating that a climate tolerant of sexual harassment, PSH victimization, and perceptions about personal safety are associated with harm to students' academic outcomes in the form of school and academic disengagement. Further, the current findings suggest that a national agenda for school safety needs to consider school climate tolerant of sexual harassment in order to be effective in responding to sexual harassment and supporting student engagement. Prelingual single-sided deafness (SSD) not only affects children's hearing skills, but can also lead to speech-language delays and academic underachievement. Early cochlear implantation leads to improved spatial hearing, but the impact on language development is less studied. In our longitudinal study, we assessed the language skills of young children with SSD and a cochlear implant (CI). In particular, we investigated their narrative skills in comparison to two control groups: children with SSD without a CI, and children with bilateral normal hearing. We found that children with SSD and a CI performed in line with their normal-hearing peers with regard to narrative and verbal short-term memory skills. Children with SSD without a CI had worse narrative (group difference = − 0.67, p = 0.02) and verbal short-term memory (group difference = − 0.68, p = 0.03) scores than the implanted group. Verbal short-term memory scores and grammar scores each correlated positively with narrative scores across all groups. Early grammar scores (at 2–3 years of age) could partially predict later narrative scores (at 4–6 years of age). These results show that young children with prelingual SSD can benefit from early cochlear implantation to achieve age-appropriate language skills. This article aims to highlight, in light of discussions about equity and inclusion in mathematics education, the relevance of the results of a survey completed in 2007. This qualitative research aimed to explore the possibilities and contributions of the exploratory-investigative approach to the mathematical learning of students participating in a remedial project, primarily to comprehend and address the issue of academic underachievement. This remedial project was integrated into the Continued Progression system of the public education network in the state of São Paulo, currently adopted by other states, which underscores the ongoing significance of this discussion. The analyzed data were collected in a class equivalent to the 9th grade in the High School (14-15). The research's analytical framework draws from the fields of education, mathematical education, and anthropology. Revisiting this study has brought to light that the exploratory-investigative approach can favor the empowerment and educational inclusion of students, establishing itself as a way to redefine academic failure and to confront a system that perpetuates a state of ignorance and cruelty. Learning analytics is a fast‐growing discipline. Institutions and countries alike are racing to harness the power of using data to support students, teachers and stakeholders. Research in the field has proven that predicting and supporting underachieving students is worthwhile. Nonetheless, challenges remain unresolved, for example, lack of generalizability, portability and failure to advance our understanding of students' behaviour. Recently, interest has grown in modelling individual or within‐person behaviour, that is, understanding the person‐specific changes. This study applies a novel method that combines within‐person with between‐person variance to better understand how changes unfolding at the individual level can explain students' final grades. By modelling the within‐person variance, we directly model where the process takes place, that is the student. Our study finds that combining within‐ and between‐person variance offers a better explanatory power and a better guidance of the variables that could be targeted for intervention at the personal and group levels. Furthermore, using within‐person variance opens the door for person‐specific idiographic models that work on individual student data and offer students support based on their own insights. The primary factor that significantly contributes to the increased prevalence of academic underachievement among Pakistani students in public universities is the inadequate level of writing proficiency. Students encounter various challenges in English writing, such as a limited vocabulary repertoire, incorrect grammatical usage, insufficient motivation, an unsupportive educational setting, and a lack of self-assurance. The primary aim of this study is to investigate the impact of metacognitive writing strategy, specifically the act of evaluating one's own writing, on writing performance among Pakistani ESL learners. Additionally, this study seeks to explore the potential mediating role of willingness to write in this relationship. The purpose of this research is to address the issue of subpar writing performance and contribute to the existing literature on writing strategies in second language acquisition. The research design utilised in this study was a mixedmethods approach, incorporating both a survey questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. These methods were employed to gather data from students enrolled in BS English programmes at public universities in South Punjab, Pakistan. The quantitative data analysis for the study was conducted using Smart PLS 3, while the qualitative data analysis employed thematic analysis. The findings of the research underscored the beneficial impact of utilising evaluation as a metacognitive writing strategy and the level of motivation to write on the writing proficiency of Pakistani English as a Second Language (ESL) learners. The present investigation holds significant practical implications for students, educators, policymakers, and curriculum developers in their efforts to enhance the writing proficiency of English as a Second Language (ESL) learners by implementing suitable strategies. Academic underachievement, as measured on standardised assessments, is commonly reported among students on the autism spectrum. However, little is known about the factors that predict academic (under)achievement, limiting the development of effective and targeted interventions. This study explored teacher ratings of academic skills and enabling behaviours of a community sample of students on the autism spectrum in Grades K-2 (5–8 years, n = 54) and 6–8 (9–12 years, n = 59) attending inclusive or special education settings. Teachers completed the Academic Competence Evaluation Scale (ACES). Results showed that children on the spectrum were rated by teachers to perform below expected levels in both academic skill areas and academic enabling behaviours. Teacher ratings of academic skills and enablers for students were higher for those in inclusive than those in special education settings. Receptive language emerged as an important predictor of teacher-reported performance alongside child motivation and interpersonal skills. Targeting academic enabling behaviours may help to improve academic achievement and lead to better educational outcomes for these students. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigated the effect of a school-based and teacher-led psychosocial intervention that targeted academic underachievement among conflict-affected youths. We hypothesized that participants in the intervention would experience improved school functioning and reduced levels of stress-related symptoms after the intervention, in comparison to a control group. The study was carried out in Gaza, employed a randomized control trial design, and included 300 students between 9 and16 years of age. Students that completed the intervention reported improvement in all the domains measured after participation: better school functioning, a reduced level of stress-related symptoms, as well as long-term effects in the ability to self-regulate negative emotions, self-efficacy, better study skills, and a higher academic performance. The long-term effects were observed five months after the intervention was carried out. The implications for the implementation of psychosocial support for conflict-affected youth are discussed. There has been a growing concern in Kenya that boys have gradually been left out of the gender equation with little research capturing their schooling experiences. When examined, boys' underachievement is treated with suspicion that has led to few studies demonstrating their marginalisation. This paper explored the manifestations of boys' underachievement in education in Busia and Kirinyaga counties in Kenya. The study was carried out in 12 primary schools targeted 12 headteachers, 24 teachers, 480 pupils, 8 education officials and 180 households. Enrolment, school attendance, and candidature for national examinations data showed boys were marginalised. In addition, they lacked adequate role models. However, on performance, boys still had better results than girls. The paper concludes that boys were beginning to under participate in education and recommends the need for gender interventions to target both boys and girls and tripartite efforts at communities, county governments and national government to re-enrol boys. The Peterson Proactive Developmental Attention model (PPDA) offers a framework for understanding and addressing social and emotional concerns of high-ability students. This manuscript focuses on the developmental component, with emphasis on academic underachievement, with explanations and guidance for applying the developmental aspect of the PPDA model in school programs for bright students, in counseling, and at home. This article explores how an emphasis on the development of underachievers, in contrast with underachievement, can engage them and the adults who are invested in them in mutual learning about life in the present – for the sake of both present and future wellbeing. The research analysis shows that children in mainstream schools suffered from psychological deterioration (aggressive behaviour, depressive moods, despair about academic underachievement, etc.) when governments implemented measures to manage the COVID-19 pandemic, and children's education took place remotely for a significant period. This was caused by the lack of social contact, which in turn contributed to the lack of knowledge in individual subjects, a deterioration in physical condition (spinal problems, visual impairment, insufficient muscle development), and the development of specific illnesses related to low physical activity. The research aims to identify the factors of distance learning that may affect student learning achievements. The research methods included an analysis of the scientific literature, and document and content analysis. A summary of the research findings found that the COVID-19 school quarantine had adverse effects on the students' knowledge, social skills, socialisation, and psychological and physical health. It also caused macro- and micro-economic problems. In summary, the research demonstrated that distance education resulted in a decline in the students' achievements and knowledge, miscommunication with their peers and conflict situations. Because of that, there are health-related concerns and additional financial challenges for parents and educational institutions organising distance education. Higher education institutions often struggle with increased dropout rates, academic underachievement, and delayed graduations. One way in which these challenges can potentially be addressed is by better leveraging the student data stored in institutional databases and online learning platforms to predict students' academic performance early using advanced computational techniques. Several research efforts have focused on developing systems that can predict student performance. However, there is a need for a solution that can predict student performance and identify the factors that directly influence it. This paper aims to develop a model that accurately identifies students who are at risk of low performance, while also delineating the factors that contribute to this phenomenon. The model employs explainable machine learning (ML) techniques to delineate the factors that are associated with low performance and integrates rule-based model risk flags with the developed prediction system to improve the accuracy of performance predictions. This helps low-performing students to improve their academic metrics by implementing remedial actions that address the factors of concern. The model suggests proper remedial actions by mapping the students' performance in each identified checkpoint with the course learning outcomes (CLOs) and topics taught in the course. The list of possible actions is mapped to this checkpoint. The developed model can accurately distinguish students at risk (total grade < 70 % ) from students with good performance. The Area under the ROC Curve (AUC ROC) of binary classification model fed with four checkpoints reached 1.0. Educational disadvantage is a multilevel and multifactorial phenomenon, with a myriad of contributing factors having been identified within the social contexts inhabited by the student from a lower socioeconomic status (SES) background. Irish research has accumulated a comprehensive body of empirical evidence on the factors operating within family, school and societal contexts but less attention has been paid to the role that the neighbourhood might have in contributing to the under-achievement of students from lower SES backgrounds. This study employed data from the 9 and 17/18-year-old cohorts of the Growing Up in Ireland survey to explore whether the SES of the neighbourhood within which a student lives makes a significant contribution to the prediction of academic achievement over and above the SES of the family and school. A series of multilevel models demonstrated the additive effects of social contexts on academic achievement in both samples. Each social context provided a unique, statistically significant contribution to the prediction of academic achievement, with smaller contributions made by more distal contexts. These findings support an understanding of educational disadvantage as a phenomenon that is perpetuated within multiple social contexts and suggest that strategies to tackle educational disadvantage should take a pan-contextual perspective. A century after partition, this article presents a critical reflection on efforts to address educational disadvantage in Northern Ireland using a Foucauldian genealogical theoretical framework. Beset by religious, political and cultural divisions from the very formation of the state in 1921, the article charts the history of opportunities heralded and then lost, including the initially ambitious though arguably naïve vision of the first Minister of Education, Lord Londonderry; the post-war egalitarian promise of the 1947 Education Act; and the introduction of the common Northern Ireland Curriculum in 1989. It is argued that, historically, education and in particular addressing educational disadvantage has not been a key policy priority for successive governments in Northern Ireland, whose attention has instead too often focused on political power struggles. Set against such a context of political instability and intransigence, the article critically examines the latest and perhaps most promising of all opportunities presented by the publication of A Fair Start, the final report and action plan of the Expert Panel on Educational Underachievement in Northern Ireland, established under the terms of the New Decade, New Approach political settlement of January 2020 and published in June 2021. Around 6% of U.K. children are underachieving at school relative to their potential (URP). We explored whether difficulties with phonological decoding, short-term memory (STM), and complex grammar may be responsible. We compared school-based reading test data or formal SATs, and verbal reasoning in 2462 children (150 URP and 2312 non-URP children) and administered a 7-min follow-up test to a matched subgroup of 106 URP and 106 non-URP children. Thirty-three of our original 150 URP children (22%) scored in the top 10% nationally for verbal reasoning, compared with 46 of our 2312 non-URP children (2%). Phonological decoding, STM, and complex grammar acquisition made independent URP contributions in children aged 7–9; in ages 10–12, only phonological decoding contributed. URP children were more likely to show multiple difficulties. The 7-min test enables school staff to quickly identify areas for targeted support. Some URP children not previously detected as capable may be encouraged to take up and succeed in further education. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Expanded Learning Time (ELT) measures have been implemented internationally to reduce the likelihood of academic underachievement among students at risk. The goal of this article is to examine the components of an ELT initiative aimed at supporting students at risk of academic failure in order to optimize the components that can improve its use and organization. Through a mixed method research approach, we have analyzed the experiences of 1,786 5th through 10th graders, 238 teachers and 126 instructors of a city-wide after-school initiative in Spain. This within-group study examines the design of the support, the environment, and the interactions between stakeholders as key components to optimize this support and promote equity. The results show which support components are related to greater support use. The results also suggest understanding these measures as additional support placed within an enriched support network. Social anxiety is significantly prevalent among college students and frequently leads to school dropout and academic underachievement. Since university counseling services are often overburdened, a mobile-based cognitive behavioral intervention was designed to support students attending therapy for social anxiety and therapists. Our main goals are to evaluate usability and acceptability of this technological system developed by a multidisciplinary team. Twenty students and three therapists participated in the usability studies. To evaluate usability we utilized a thinking aloud and question asking protocol, and the system usability scale (SUS) to assess usability and satisfaction. SPICA app demonstrated usability scores above average and the large majority of students agreed that the app was easy to use and that they would use it frequently. As for the therapist platform (database) preliminary results indicated that the database is useful but some alterations are still necessary. SPICA app demonstrated usability and acceptability among college students. A more rigorous study is needed to assess the therapist platform but preliminary results demonstrate acceptability. We propose using Stochastic Frontier Analysis to estimate pupils' academic underachievement. We model underachievement as the gap between expected achievement and actual achievement, not due to a learning disability. Our data are a panel for 2,228 Belgian pupils observed over 6 years of primary education. We found that the average underachievement gap is 23.5%. That is, the average pupil does not exploit about one fourth of their potential. Gifted pupils appear to underachieve as much as non-gifted pupils. We also found that class size is a determinant of underachievement. The association between class size and underachievement is non-monotonic, with an underachievement minimum at a class size of about 20 pupils. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Specific learning disabilities (SLDs) are a significant factor in children's academic underachievement. Around 46% of SLDs children have comorbid auditory processing disorder (APD). Cognitive functions are the ability to think and plan. Consequently, learning and academic progress are significantly affected by these disabilities. Objective: Our study sought to evaluate whether children with SLDs have both central auditory processing (CAP) and cognitive abnormalities. Patients and methods: A case-control study was conducted on 36 children from different schools of Zagazig city, Alsharquia government, Egypt, allocated into 2 groups, 18 with SLDs and academic underachievement (study group I) and 18 without SLDs (control group II). Medical history, otological evaluation, basic audiological examination, central screening tests (speech in noise (SPIN), dichotic digit (DDT), and pitch pattern sequence (PPS)), test for temporal resolution (Gaps in noise, (GIN)), IQ, and visuomotor ability evaluation were used to collect data. Results: The SLDs group had lower DDT, PPS, total score and percent of GIN test versus the control groups. At the same time, the approximate threshold of GIN test in the SLDs group was significantly greater relative to the normal group. Regarding Bender-Gestalt test (BGT) test, there was highly statically significant increase scores on copy and recall phases among control group. A significant positive relationship was detected between the BGT copy and recall phases and PPS on both sides. Conclusion: Our findings endorsed our hypothesis that most children with SLDs had subnormal scores on CAP abilities and cognitive function. Background: Educational achievement is an independent predictor of many life outcomes and so it is important to understand its causes and correlates. Internalising symptoms, encompassing anxiety and depression symptoms, are one candidate influence.Methods: Using a prospective and genetically-informative design, the present study investigated the associations between internalising symptoms and educational achievement, controlling for IQ at age 7 years and socioeconomic status, among participants of the Twin and Early Development Study (up to N = 10,791). Internalising symptoms were measured by the parent-rated Anxiety Related Behaviours Questionnaire (ages 7, 9, 16 years), and educational attainment were indexed by UK-wide standardized examination results at ages 16 and 18 years, and self-reported transition to university education.Results: Negative affect was the only internalising symptom subtype that was uniquely associated with academic underachievement at all timepoints, from mid-adolescence to early adulthood. The association between negative affect and achievement became non-significant when using MZ twin difference scores, suggesting that the majority of the relationship is accounted for by genetic and shared environmental effects.Limitations: Limitations include the reliance on parent-reported internalising symptoms.Conclusions: Negative affect in youth may be an important marker of later academic underachievement. Findings suggest that academic underachievement is not simply a consequence of the disruption caused by negative affect symptoms and therefore educational interventions may be required to optimise outcomes. Objective: To investigate whether child mental health problems prospectively associate with IQ‐achievement discrepancy (i.e., academic under‐ and over‐achievement) in emerging adolescence. The secondary aims were to test whether these associations are specific to certain mental health problems, to assess potential sex differences, and to examine whether associations are robustly observed across multiple informants (i.e., maternal and teacher‐reports). Methods: This study included 1,577 children from the population‐based birth cohort the Generation R Study. Child mental health problems at age 6 were assessed by mothers and teachers using the Child Behavior Checklist and the Teacher's Report Form. The IQ‐achievement discrepancy was quantified as the standardized residuals of academic achievement regressed on IQ, where IQ was measured with four tasks from the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children‐Fifth Edition around age 13 and academic attainment was measured with the Cito test, a national Dutch academic test, at the end of elementary school (12 years of age). Results: Mental health problems at age 6 were associated with IQ‐achievement discrepancy at age 12, with more problems associating with greater academic underachievement. When examining specific mental health problems, we found that attention problems was the only mental health problem to independently associate with the IQ‐achievement discrepancy (adjusted standardized difference per 1‐standard deviation, mother: −0.11, p < 0.001, 95% CI [−0.16, −0.06]; teacher: −0.13, p < 0.001, 95% CI [−0.18, −0.08]). These associations remained after adjusting for co‐occurring mental health problems. The overall pattern of associations was consistent across boys and girls and across informants. Conclusion: Mental health problems during the transition from kindergarten to elementary school associate with academic underachievement at the end of elementary school. These associations were primarily driven by attention problems, as rated by both mothers and teachers—suggesting that strategies targeting attention problems may be a particularly promising avenue for improving educational performance irrespective of IQ, although this should be established more thoroughly through further research. The presence of primitive (infant) reflexes in school-aged children as indicators of immaturity in neuromotor functioning has been associated with under-achievement in terms of reading, writing and mathematics, and been linked to conditions such as dyslexia, developmental coordination disorder (DCD) and attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The research presented here explores the extent to which three such reflexes, previously linked to learning and behavioural difficulties in the classroom, were present in a sample of 120 children in the September that they started formal schooling (aged 4–5) in the United Kingdom (UK). Approximately half of these children then participated in a movement programme and 108 were then tested again towards the end of their first year at school. The data demonstrate that a high percentage of young children are, indeed, starting school with one or more of these reflexes present to some extent. Those children who received no additional input throughout the school year showed no improvements in their reflex status when compared to children who had participated in a developmental movement programme. Thus, recommendations are made for further research; particularly in relation to neuromotor screening, appropriate physical development provision prior to and during school; and developmental movement interventions for older children. We examined how six gifted boys perceived the onset and development of their academic underachievement and what they identified as contributing aspects. Across the six boys' experiences, a similar pattern of onset and development of academic underachievement emerged. The boys discussed a lack of academic challenge, investment in hobbies, issues with time management and self-regulation, family transitions, and peer relations as contributing to their academic underachievement. These aspects influenced the boys' value beliefs (e.g., not caring about grades) or maladaptive beliefs about themselves (e.g., lower self-worth), which contributed to disengagement and underachievement according to students. Objectives Academic difficulties are common in epileptic children. A learning disability (LD) is a reduction in the learning capacity of children or the intellectual ability of adults, which is different from mental retardation or dementia. Materials & Methods The participants were 56 patients, of whom 35 were males (62.5%), and 21 were females (37.5%). The participants attended the Neurology Outpatient Clinic, the Sohag University Hospital, between December 2016 and May 2017. Children with chronological age between 7 and 16 years with idiopathic focal and normal mental and motor developmental history were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. The Revised Quick Neurological Screening Test was used to assess different types of LD. Results LDs were present in 67.9% of our participants with a statistically significant association between LDs in one arm and younger age, earlier age of onset of epilepsy, frequent seizures, and seizure semiology, particularly of temporal lobe origin, in the other arm. In addition, left epileptic focus on EEG, prolonged treatment duration with antiepileptic drugs (AED), and polytherapy were significantly correlated with LDs. Conclusion Many factors are significantly correlated with LDs in children with idiopathic focal epilepsy, like age of the patient, age of epilepsy onset, seizure semiology, prolonged AED treatment, and polytherapy. Objective: To improve on several methodological issues regarding current literature investigating the relationship between ADHD symptomatology and academic success in adults and examine the relative contributions of specific dimensions of ADHD symptomatology (i.e., inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity) to post-secondary academic success. Method: A large sample of 3,688 post-secondary students were examined using a longitudinal design. The Conners' Adult ADHD Rating Scale (CAARS) was used to assess adult ADHD symptoms and academic success was assessed using students' official academic records (e.g., final GPAs and degree completion status). Results: Students with greater inattention symptomatology at the start of their academic program showed consistently poorer long-term academic success (i.e., lower GPAs, higher dropout rates), regardless of gender. Conclusion: Inattention symptoms are the primary driver of the relationship between ADHD symptomatology and academic underachievement in adults. This study addresses a critical knowledge gap by exploring the intricate relationship between low birth weight (LBW) and the heightened risk of suboptimal academic achievement during adolescence through a comprehensive retrospective cohort design. In this registry-based cohort study, meticulously linked health and curriculum-based test data for individuals born in New South Wales (NSW), Australia, between 2003 and 2005 were employed. Birth weight data were carefully sourced from the NSW perinatal data collection (PDC). The educational performance of offspring was thoroughly evaluated using the National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) during grade 9, approximately at 14 years of age. After rigorous adjustments for potential confounders, findings revealed a compelling narrative: LBW adolescents demonstrated an elevated susceptibility to not meeting national minimum standards across all domains, encompassing spelling [OR, 1.59 (95%CI 1.48–1.69)], writing [OR, 1.51 (95%CI 1.41–1.61)], reading [OR, 1.38 (95%CI 1.29–1.48)], and numeracy [OR, 1.52 (95%CI 1.40–1.63)]. Notably, LBW boys exhibited a more pronounced inclination towards diminished academic performance compared to their female counterparts. This comprehensive retrospective cohort study, based on linked data, unequivocally establishes LBW as significantly associated with an increased vulnerability to substandard educational achievement during adolescence. Particularly robust effects were observed in females across all outcomes. Gifted underachievers perform worse in school than would be expected based on their high intelligence. Possible causes for underachievement are low motivational dispositions (need for cognition) and metacognitive competences. This study tested the interplay of these variables longitudinally with gifted and non‐gifted students from Germany (N = 341, 137 females) in Grades 6 (M = 12.02 years at t1) and 8 (M = 14.07 years). Declarative and procedural metacognitive competences were assessed in the domain of reading comprehension. Path analyses showed incremental effects of procedural metacognition over and above intelligence on the development of school achievement in gifted students (β =.139). Moreover, declarative metacognition and need for cognition interactively predicted procedural metacognition (β =.169), which mediated their effect on school achievement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Guided by the implicit theories of intelligence (ITI) and the cognitive–motivational–relational theory of emotion and coping, the current cross-sectional study aimed to test the effects of students' incremental view of intelligence (i.e., growth mindset) in coping with academic underachievement and the potential mediating role of the fear of failure (FOF). A total of 444 Chinese undergraduate students, aged 18 to 25 years old (M  = 19.76, SD  = 1.48, 53.4% were female), voluntarily completed the paper-and-pencil questionnaire. A partial mediational model showed good fit with the survey data. Growth mindset had a positive direct effect on problem-focused coping (PFC) and a negative effect on FOF. FOF had a positive effect on emotion-focused coping (EFC) but not PFC. The bootstrapping results showed that growth mindset had an indirect negative effect on EFC via FOF. Our findings provide further evidence that ITI can affect different coping styles, specifically in the domain of academic failure. Growth mindset directly promoted remedial coping and prevented disengagement-oriented coping in the context of negative academic outcomes through lessening the fear of subsequent aversive consequences of failure. Background: Motor deficiencies are observed in a large number of children with ADHD. Especially fine motor impairments can lead to academic underachievement, low self-esteem and frustration in affected children. Despite these far-reaching consequences, fine motor deficiencies have remained widely undertreated in the ADHD population. The aim of this review was to systematically map the evidence on existing training programs for remediating fine motor impairments in children with ADHD and to assess their effectiveness.Methods: The scoping review followed the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. In March 2020, PsycINFO, MEDLINE (PubMed), Web of Science, Google Scholar and The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews were searched for evidence. The eligibility criteria and the data charting process followed the PICO framework, complemented by study design. The investigated population included children with a formal ADHD diagnosis (either subtype) or elevated ADHD symptoms aged between 4 and 12 years, both on and off medication. All training interventions aiming at improving fine motor skills, having a fine motor component or fine motor improvements as a secondary outcome were assessed for eligibility; no comparators were specified.Results: Twelve articles were included in the final report, comprising observational and experimental studies as well as a review. Both offline and online or virtual training interventions were reported, often accompanied by physical activity and supplemented by training sessions at home. The training programs varied in length and intensity, but generally comprised several weeks and single or multiple training sessions per week. All interventions including more than one session were effective in the treatment of fine motor deficiencies in children with ADHD and had a wide range of additional positive outcomes. The effects could be maintained at follow-up.Conclusions: Fine motor training in children with ADHD can be very effective and multiple approaches including specific fine motor and cognitive training components, some kind of physical activity, feedback mechanisms, or multimodal treatments can be successful. Training programs need to be tailored to the specific characteristics of the ADHD population. Due to the increase of economic immigration over the last few decades, South Korea has rapidly become a multi-ethnic society. The number of students with a multicultural background (SMBs) has increased more than tenfold in the past ten years. Research has revealed that despite physical inclusion of SMBs in general classrooms, SMBs tend to struggle at school as a result of language difficulties, academic underachievement, and social isolation. Shedding light on the Salamanca thinking, this study aims to investigate how teachers' experiences of SMBs vary according to school cultures. Thirteen teachers from three schools (with different school cultures) were invited to participate in qualitative semi-structured interviews. It was revealed that the teachers, who worked in the different school cultures, expressed differently with regard to (1) teachers' reasoning about SMBs' struggles, (2) teachers' professional knowledge and strategic practices, (3) collaboration with a multicultural education supervising teacher (MEST), and (4) dependency upon external support. The school judged to be contributing to 'true' inclusion was characterised by ample support from a MEST and the creation of an inclusive learning environment for SMBs as a whole-school approach. The goal of the current study was to investigate the role of academic enablers on the association between symptoms of inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity and academic achievement. There were 395 3rd through 5th grade students (48% boys). Students self-rated behavioral symptoms and classroom teachers completed ratings of academic enablers. Achievement was modeled as a latent variable including CBM probes, teacher ratings of academic skills, and student grades. Results indicated that (a) inattention was negatively associated with academic enablers and academic performance, (b) inattention had a small negative direct and indirect association with math outcomes in most models, while hyperactivity/impulsivity demonstrated showed a small, negative indirect association in one model, (c) and inattention had a small negative indirect association with reading in three models; hyperactivity/impulsivity demonstrated a small indirect association with reading in one model. Procrastination is defined as a behavioral tendency to postpone tasks that, because of their unmotivating or tedious characteristics, are not attractive to the performer, and whose delay can lead to negative consequences. This is the behavior of delaying responsibilities, being aware of their importance and the repercussions of the delay. These consequences can affect the personal, social, occupational and academic spheres of individuals. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine the relationship of academic procrastination and test anxiety on academic performance, as well as the relationship between the two variables. In this way, the aim is to achieve a better understanding of the links between the three variables, which will serve as a theoretical basis for preventing and intervening in the negative repercussions of procrastination. To this end, an investigation has been carried out with 201 college students, using the German Test Anxiety Inventory (GTAI-A), the Academic Procrastination Scale (EPA), and a record of the qualifications obtained by the participants collected through a self-report. This is a correlational design that does not include experimental manipulation of variables or randomization of the sample, so the aim is not to establish causal relationships but to determine the direction and strength of the associations between variables. The results reveal the presence of academic procrastination and test anxiety in university students. Specifically, the majority of participants (45.3 %) reflected a medium level of anxiety, 28.9 % reflected a high level and 25.9 % showed a low level. In the total sample, procrastination showed a mean score of 30.3 points out of 60. As for the relationships of both variables with academic performance, test anxiety shows a negative relationship with academic performance, so higher levels of anxiety are associated with worse grades. Procrastination does not show a significant and direct relationship with grades, but it is related to two anxiety factors (interference and lack of confidence), indirectly affecting academic performance. In addition, significant differences in academic performance have been found based on the different anxiety levels identified (X2 (2,201) = 16.929; p = .001), with the high anxiety group obtaining a lower mean score (M = 5.74; SD = 1.27). This supports the hypothesis that test anxiety is negatively associated with academic performance. Moreover, it has been found that comparing the medium and low anxiety groups, the differences are not significant, but comparing each of them with the high anxiety group they are. Therefore, significant differences in the grades only appear when the level of anxiety is high. That is, a moderate level of anxiety is adaptive, and only becomes detrimental if it becomes high. In conclusion, to prevent and intervene in academic underachievement and associated psychosocial problems, university psychological services should consider the influence of test anxiety, procrastination and other cognitive, behavioral, motivational and emotional variables. According to this study, intervention in test anxiety is a central aspect, as it has a direct effect on academic performance. In the same way, procrastinating behaviors can be intervened, as they interfere indirectly in academic outcomes, being associated with cognitive manifestations of test anxiety. The relative weight of the different variables associated with academic achievement varies according to each student, so that an individualized approach to these types of problems would increase the levels of effectiveness and efficiency in the care provided by university psychological services. Finally, the need for more research to identify the factors associated with low academic performance and the relationships between them is highlighted, in order to facilitate the design of effective interventions for different student profiles. HIV-exposed uninfected (HEU) children may be at-risk for poorer academic achievement compared to HIV-unexposed uninfected (HUU) children due to in utero and perinatal exposure to HIV and/or anti-retroviral (ARV) medication. Understanding the risk factors for academic underachievement is important for implementing timely intervention and academic supports. HEU (N = 110, mean (SD) age 5.59 (0.22) years) and HUU (N = 43, mean (SD) age 5.73 (0.64) years) children completed assessments of general intelligence (WPPSI-III) and academic achievement (WRAT-4). Parent interviews and medical record reviews were used to obtain sociodemographic and maternal health data. HUU children scored significantly higher than HEU children on single word reading (p = 0.006), math calculation skills (p = 0.003), Verbal IQ, Performance IQ, Full Scale IQ, and Processing Speed (all WPPSI-III measures p < 0.001). Verbal IQ at 3–4 years predicted academic achievement at 5–6 years of age, yet sociodemographic and medical factors did not. These findings demonstrate that HEU children obtained significantly lower scores of intellectual, reading, and math abilities during early childhood. Twenty-five percent of U.S. schoolchildren attend a rural school. Yet, rural school issues are typically subsumed by debates focused on urban problems and the misguided notion of ample resources available for their remediation. These assumptions belie the reality of the spatial mismatch that exists for rural schools, especially around mental health supports. Adverse childhood experiences and trauma disproportionately affect rural schoolchildren, putting them at greater risk of academic underachievement and other negative sequelae throughout the lifespan. Traumainformed approaches in rural schools may mitigate the effects of childhood adversity and help close achievement gaps for rural students. Rural schools and students have needs and challenges distinct from those of urban and suburban schools, but only 2% of peer-reviewed publications address trauma-informed approaches or socialemotional learning in rural schools. More research is needed to help our 13 million rural schoolchildren develop the resilience necessary to overcome adversity and achieve healthy outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Providing students with timely, targeted, and useful feedback regarding their understanding of course topics is generally accepted as a good educational practice. However, when classes are very large there are challenges that prevent many instructors from accomplishing this goal. This study explores the perceived helpfulness to students and the instructor of implementing a relatively new method of automated scoring and feedback in a large section of an organic chemistry course. Prior research has shown this method to be helpful in other STEM classes. In the current study, students in two different offerings of a stand-alone organic chemistry course completed an anonymous survey in which they were asked to provide feedback about their perceptions of the new methodology. The faculty member who taught the course was also asked to respond to a series of questions regarding the feedback system. Both students and the instructor provided favorable comments about the helpfulness of the methodology and the feedback provided by it. The instructor found it helpful for providing individual feedback to students, which had previously not been possible due to the number of students enrolled in the course. Students reported that the feedback helped them to identify course topic strengths and challenge areas and that they planned to study the material differently going forward. The results indicate that this intervention can help improve student understanding of course topics and necessary actions for improving future performance in the course. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Insufficient research attention has been focused on the development of academic under-achievement and motivational beliefs. A longitudinal, person-centered approach was used to identify latent subgroups of growth in the joint development of teacher-reported underachievement and four motivational beliefs (self-concept, task importance, psychological cost value, and self-worth) from first through sixth grade. Two types of underachievement emerged: Sustained and Growing Underachievement. An Achievement class was also consistently found. Sustained underachievement was not associated with declining self-concept or task importance, but was related to moderately lower psychological cost value, self-worth, and middle school achievement. Growing underachievement was associated with relatively lower levels of self-concept and task importance that declined over time, similar to the achievement patterns. Class membership did not differ by gifted status. Gender effects emerged for the Task Importance and Self-Worth models in the hypothesized direction, but were not robust.
