Abstract The purpose of this multi-institution study was to develop an understanding of where and how ranking lists are being used for the purpose of informing promotion and tenure decisions. Individuals were selected for this survey who, were at the time, serving in administrative positions at 115 R1 Carnegie research institutions. The survey questionnaire consisted of demographic, closed-response, and rating-scale questions designed to understand the respondents' experiences and attitudes concerning their academic department's promotion and tenure process. Results of this survey will inform librarians on practices associated with promotion and tenure involving open access publishing and the use of standardized journal lists. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Academic libraries have a long history of commitment to diversity, inclusion, and accommodation and are frequently models for other academic departments and outside industries. For example, libraries often consider users with disabilities and work to adapt services, collections, and technologies to increase accessibility for as many users as possible. Libraries also take care to accommodate employees with disabilities, but like many other industries, often unintentionally perceive disabilities only as ones that are immediately visible. This column will discuss the unique challenges that library employers may face when needing to accommodate employees with invisible disabilities, provide a selected overview of the literature surrounding invisible disabilities and library employees, and give selected tips to help library employers and employees better understand and accommodate employees with invisible disabilities. Academic careers and institutional reputations are closely linked with the ability to secure funding and publish work. In today's competitive environment, it is essential for research to be clearly communicated. In our experience, many researchers need assistance with communication skills, and institutions that offer professional services in grant, manuscript and project management have an advantage in the development of their faculty and trainees. A review of the literature shows that some institutions offer centralized proposal development resources and personnel to assist with grant writing, some institutions offer workshops and lectures designed to improve researchers' writing skills for grants and/or manuscripts, and fewer institutions offer departments focused specifically on editing manuscripts. In the fall of 2009, the University of Kentucky's (UK) Markey Cancer Center (MCC) developed an infrastructure, the Research Communications Office (RCO), to enhance faculty productivity. The RCO exists to provide: expertise in scientific editing of manuscripts for academic publishing; editing and management of research, training, and career development grants; project management for multi-component and institutionally complex grants; facilitation and tracking of all MCC pilot funding mechanisms; tracking all research outcomes; preparation of graphics for presentations, posters, publications and grants; marketing and design expertise for outreach endeavors; the planning and execution of internal and external communications; and MCC web content creation and maintenance. A successful and valued service for MCC, the RCO has totaled more than 1,400 projects over six years, growing from 189 projects when tracking began in 2010 to 294 in 2015. This article will discuss why and how the RCO was created at the MCC, and in doing so, provide a framework for how the RCO model can be successfully implemented at other institutions interested in offering professional editing and management of grants and manuscripts. The article presents several online resources that focus on themes relevant to current issues in academic libraries. It includes the paper "Academic Library Building Design: Resources for Planning" by Margaret Fain and colleagues that provides an introduction to the essential issues facing librarians, architects and planners. This article demonstrates the importance of bringing technical service support to the forefront of planning major shifts in library collections or services and discusses the impact innovative technical services work can have in reshaping the library landscape. Though technical service work is often performed outside of public view, and, in fact, is often overlooked as the resource it can be within the library, the potential is there for technical services to provide invaluable support in adopting new programs and services in direct support of patron needs and campus priorities. The article reports on the assessment of marketing faculty publications at the University of Arkansas Libraries. Topics discussed include citation study, marketing, and primary responsibility of the library. This study investigated the skills, knowledge, abilities or dispositions that are most valued and respected by academic librarians, and determined how these qualities might, or might not, be associated with generational membership. Other variables included institutional classification, career length, years since first professional degree, and broad library job function. The article explains survey design, proportional random sampling method, statistical analyses and tests, and resulting findings that may have implications for recruitment, mentoring, succession planning, and for assisting in the transmission of knowledge among academic librarians, especially from career mature librarians to their younger colleagues. Collection Development and Acquisitions staff in a library have a responsibility to account for the sound and responsible expenditure of library budgets. They need to communicate their needs about the information required from the fund code structure in their Integrated Library System to perform their job duties and demonstrate sound fiscal management. When fund codes lose the granularity that provides information on the costs of different formats by subject discipline or academic department there is a subsequent loss in fiscal accountability and the ability to accurately project anticipated inflationary costs for formats in different disciplines. When the Acquisitions Unit at the Adelphi University Libraries streamlined the fund code structure the loss of granularity had a major impact on budget management and fiscal accountability for Collection Development. Universities in Nigeria and the world over are engines of growth and development. They are increasingly recognised to have a broader role in the social, economic, technological and manpower development of a nation. In fact, the universities serve as the main source of supply of skilled manpower needed in the various sectors of the nation. The National Policy on Education (2004) acknowledges that university education shall make optimum contribution to national development by intensifying and diversifying its programme for the development of high level manpower within the context of the needs of the nation. The library has a great role to play in the provision of the right information in the right format to the right user and at the right time. Haruna and Mabawonku (2001), while stressing the importance of information for every profession, affirm that legal practitioners depend fully on a nugget of relevant, precise and timely information for success in their profession. This study aims to examine the current status; collection; services; use of information technologies, budget and sources of budget in the departmental libraries at University of Peshawar. Questionnaire was distributed among the population of all library professionals working in departmental libraries (N=36, 100%) with the response rate of (N=28, 80.2%).SPSS (Version 19) was used for quantitative data analysis. Study identified that the respondents were to some extent satisfied with the present departmental library's collection and budget. Inadequate information technology; lack of automated catalogue; lack of barcodes on books; lack of OPAC and automated circulation services; lack of Indexing and Abstracting Services; inadequate computers for users; lack of books binding and reprographic services in the departmental libraries were found from this study. They provided HEC digital library access to their users. Most of the departmental libraries have their proper library committee for the overall management. Majority of departmental libraries received fund from university sources. Most of them faced inadequate budget and space problem. The study has practical implications for library administration and management, librarians and information specialists for improving the current situation and better services provision for maximum users' satisfaction. The Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Department at Murray State University has developed convenient methods to aid faculty members in their research. Various means of communication and programs, such as Campus Delivery, Document Delivery, and 'Free ILL,' have allowed faculty members to see the wide variety of research resources that are available through interlibrary loan. These methods have been used as key public relations tools to promote library resources and services, and have strengthened the relationship between faculty members and the Interlibrary Loan Department at Murray State University. Abstract: This article examines the collaborative teaching approaches between a cataloger and reference librarian. It discusses the role of instruction in liaison and collection development work, skills required to teach information literacy classes, and reviews case studies that inform the question of what skills and roles these two fields of librarianship contribute to information literacy instruction. Case studies describe the cooperative teaching partnership, examine each librarian''s contribution to the collaborative effort, and discuss the benefits of partnering with other colleagues. Moreover, this study suggests liaison duties that include collection development responsibilities are enhanced by participating in instructional activities for assigned academic departments. In this contribution we analyse user requests with regard to opening hours of university libraries. The aim of the contribution is to answer five main questions concerning opening hours, such as opening hours in the evening or opening hours during weekends. To answer those questions we surveyed more than 400 library users using a structured questionnaire. The article considers libraries and archives of The School of Industrial Engineering of Barcelona, Spain (ETSEIB). The collections of historical items owned by the university, its historical archives and the history section of its library are discussed as examples of what is termed the cultural heritage of the school. University library administrators in Sri Lanka have begun to search for alternative ways to satisfy their clientele on the basis of service quality. This article aims at providing a theoretical model to facilitate the identification of service quality attributes and domains that may be used to predict customer satisfaction from a service quality perspective. The effectiveness of existing service quality models such as LibQUAL, SERVQUAL and SERVPREF have been questioned. In that regard, this study developed a theoretical model for academic libraries in Sri Lanka based on the disconfirmation and performance-only paradigms. These perspectives were considered by researchers to be the core mechanism to develop service quality/customer satisfaction models. The attributes and domain identification of service quality was carried out with a stratified sample of 263 participants selected from postgraduate and undergraduate students and academic staff members from the faculties of Arts in four universities in Sri Lanka. The study established that responsiveness, supportiveness, building environment, collection and access, furniture and facilities, technology, Web services and service delivery were quality domains which can be used to predict customer satisfaction. The study examines the implications of the name change of the Ghana library school from the Department of Library and Archival Studies to the Department of Information Studies, University of Ghana. It also explores the relationship between the name change and the sudden increase in enrolment of students in the department. A cross-sectional survey approach was used to elicit information from some fourth year (level 400) Information Studies students of the 2006-2007 graduating year. An in-depth interview was also conducted with the Head of Department who initiated the name change. This was to find out the reasons why the change in name was recommended, the challenges encountered in soliciting this change and finally, with the benefit of hindsight, whether the change has been worthwhile. Findings from the study showed that the students were attracted to the Department by its name, and, they were anticipating studying computer-related courses. This perception has many implications for administrators of the Department. Purpose — By reflecting the historical transition of the University of Southern California (USC) social work departmental library, the article aims to share challenges and solutions of the library collection and services in the electronic environment and to facilitate a discussion about the future of library services. Design/methodology/approach — The author conducted a literature review about departmental libraries, and a historical review of the USC social work library collection and services. Direct observation, surveys, reference statistics and the web visiting data were employed in the research analysis. A new vision and service model were created. Findings — The USC social work students rely on both the print and electronic resources for their research and study. The decentralized social work library collection and the students' inadequate information literacy skills are the major challenges for the librarian. Information literacy instruction, web-based collection management and library outreach are beneficial for the access service at the new information center. Research limitations/implications — Some findings may not be compatible with other user groups in academic libraries. The established service model is applicable in other departmental libraries and information centers. Practical implications — The solutions employed by the USC social work librarian are applicable in other departmental academic libraries. Point of entry to the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), the Learning Center will be a place to learn, to obtain information, and to live. Replacing and improving the old main library, this new building will gradually assimilate all EPFL department libraries collections and services, as they are integrated into a global information system. Conceived as the place for those who are learning, mainly students, who have no personal working area on the campus, it is designed to adapt itself to the 'seasons' of academic life throughout the year (flexibility and modularity of rooms, extended opening hours during exam periods). It will take into account group working habits (silence vs. noise), changes in the rhythm of student life (meals, working alone, discussions, etc.), and other environmental factors. Of course the needs of EPFL staff and alumni, local industry and citizens have also been carefully considered in the design. By offering a multitude of community functions, such as a bookshop, cafeteria and restaurant services, and rooms for relaxation and discussion, the Learning Center will link the campus to the city. Areas devoted to exhibition and debate will also be included, enforcing its role as an interactive science showcase, in particular for those technologies related to the research and teaching of the EPFL. The presentation described the process and steps towards the actual realisation of such a vital public space: from the programme definition to the collaboration with the bureau of architects (SAANA, Tokyo) who won the project competition, the speakers showed what are the challenges and lessons already taken when working on this major piece of architecture, indeed the heart of the transformation of the technical school build in the 1970s into a real 2000s campus. Many libraries in the US provide information about their cataloging department homepages as segments of their technical services homepages. However, in case of the Arabian Gulf university libraries, all the library Websites focus on general collections and services available to their patrons and there is a lack of information on various departments within the library. Very few library Websites have information about the cataloging departments. Only the King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) library Website provides a separate Website for its Cataloging Operations Division. The study also found that the exploitation of Web-based cataloging resources by catalogers of the KFUPM library has resulted in enhancing the quality and efficiency of cataloging work. The closing of an academic science/technology library is generally thought of as an extreme to be avoided.
