To enhance the power supply reliability of the microgrid cluster consisting of AC/DC hybrid microgrids, this paper proposes an innovative structure that enables backup power to be accessed quickly in the event of power source failure. The structure leverages the quick response characteristics of thyristor switches, effectively reducing the power outage time. The corresponding control strategy is introduced in detail in this paper. Furthermore, taking practical considerations into account, two types of AC/DC hybrid microgrid structures are designed for grid-connected and islanded states. These microgrids exhibit strong distributed energy consumption capabilities, simple control strategies, and high power quality. Additionally, the aforementioned structures are constructed within the MATLAB/Simulink R2023a simulation software. Their feasibility is verified, and comparisons with the existing studies are conducted using specific examples. Finally, the cost and efficiency of the application of this study are discussed. Due to their efficient renewable energy consumption performance, AC/DC hybrid microgrids have become an important development form for future power grids. However, the fault response will be more complex due to the interconnected structure of AC/DC hybrid microgrids, which may have a serious influence on the safe operation of the system. Based on an AC/DC hybrid microgrid with an integrated bidirectional power converter, research on the interaction impact of faults was carried out with the purpose of enhancing the safe operation capability of the microgrid. The typical fault types of the DC sub-grid were selected to analyze the transient processes of fault circuits. Then, AC current expressions under the consideration of system interconnection structure were derived and, on this basis, we obtained the response results of non-fault subnets under the fault process, in order to reveal the mechanism of DC fault propagation. Subsequently, a current limitation control strategy based on virtual impedance control is proposed to address the rapid increase in the DC fault current. On the basis of constant DC voltage control in AC/DC hybrid microgrids, a virtual impedance control link was added. The proposed control strategy only needs to activate the control based on the change rate of the DC current, without additional fault detection systems. During normal operations, virtual impedance has a relatively small impact on the steady-state characteristics of the system. In the case of a fault, the virtual impedance resistance value is automatically adjusted to limit the change rate and amplitude of the fault current. Finally, a DC fault model of the AC/DC hybrid microgrid was built on the RTDS platform. The simulation and experimental results show that the control strategy proposed in this paper can reduce the instantaneous change rate of the fault state current from 19.1 kA/s to 2.73 kA/s, and the error between the calculated results of equivalent modeling and simulation results was within 5%. The obtained results verify the accuracy of the mathematical equivalent model and the effectiveness of the proposed current limitation control strategy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

AC/DC hybrid microgrids are becoming potentially more attractive due to the proliferation of renewable energy sources, such as photovoltaic generation, battery energy storage systems, and wind turbines. The collaboration of AC sub-microgrids and DC sub-microgrids improves operational efficiency when multiple types of power generators and loads coexist at the power distribution level. However, the voltage stability analysis and software validation of AC/DC hybrid microgrids is a critical concern, especially with the increasing adoption of power electronic devices and various types of power generation. In this manuscript, we investigate the modeling of AC/DC hybrid microgrids with grid-forming and grid-following power converters. We propose a rapid simulation technique to reduce the simulation runtime with acceptable errors. Moreover, we discuss the stability of hybrid microgrids with different types of faults and power mismatches. In particular, we examine the voltage nadir to evaluate the transient stability of the hybrid microgrid. We also design a droop controller to regulate the power flow and alleviate voltage instability. Large disturbances frequently happen in isolated AC/DC Hybrid Microgrids. Unfortunately, constant power loads (CPLs) with negative impedance characteristics are equivalent to positive feedback, resulting in an increase in large disturbances. The system can easily become unstable. Consequently, large signal stability criteria are proposed in this paper. Combined with a three-dimensional region of asymptotic stability (3D RAS) method for islanded AC/DC Hybrid Microgrids, important parameters to increase stability margins were determined. Firstly, mixed potential theory was used to derive a large-signal stability criterion. The criteria gave constraints on filtering parameters, CPL power, power of the battery to charge and discharge, AC resistive loads, and DC bus voltage. Then, Lyapunov functions were constructed, and the Lasalle invariance principle was adopted to achieve 3D RAS. When large disturbances emerged, and simultaneously voltage and current varied in 3D RAS, the system always obtained stability and reached new steady-state equilibrium points. Finally, according to comparisons, bigger capacitances of the DC bus capacitor and the AC capacitor, larger battery discharging power and smaller charging power could significantly increase stability margins of islanded Microgrids. Voltage fluctuation and power mismatch which are caused by the decentralization, randomness, and intermittence of distributed energy resource along with load variability cause severe impacts on the security and quality of power network operation. Aiming at alleviating this issue, the structure of an AC/DC hybrid microgrid based on solid-state transformer is presented in this paper. A proper control coordination is developed to guarantee stable and reliable operation of the system. An energy management strategy is proposed to coordinate the power flow among the solid-state transformer, AC microgrid, DC microgrid and energy storage and to effectively suppress the fluctuation of the DC bus voltage. A novel adaptive droop control for the energy storage is proposed to prolong the supercapacitor life and achieve an optimum economic benefit to consumers. The droop coefficient is obtained by fuzzy logic controller of which the state of charge of the supercapacitor and unit-time electricity charge are assumed to be the input parameters. Simulation attest the feasibility of the proposed control coordination and energy management strategy.

Microgrids provide a good platform for the full utilization and development of distributed energy. Compared with single direct current (DC) microgrid and alternating current (AC) microgrid, alternating and direct current (AC/DC) hybrid microgrid combines the advantages of both, and its operation and control technology has received wide attention. Firstly, the typical structure and main features of AC microgrid, DC microgrid and AC/DC hybrid microgrid are described; and the current research status of the equipment control layer, coordination control layer and energy management layer is reviewed based on the concept of hierarchical control of AC/DC hybrid microgrid; finally, the future development trend of AC/DC hybrid microgrid is discussed in the light of the development of energy internet and smart grid. To maximize the benefits of microgrid clusters, a general model and analysis method for studying the optimized operation of AC/DC microgrid clusters using non-cooperative games is proposed. This paper first establishes the optimized objective function of an AC/DC microgrid for economic operations. Based on the supply and demand theory, the dynamic adjustment mechanism of electricity price is introduced into microgrid clusters, and a game model for the optimal operation of multiple microgrids is established. The Nash equilibrium solution of the established model is obtained by iterative search algorithm, and the convergence of the Nash equilibrium solution is also proven. The bidirectional power flow through the interlinking converter (IC), in ac/dc hybrid microgrids (HMGs) consisting of distributed generators (DGs) with droop controllers, plays an important role on the stability of such systems during islanding. This paper investigates the impact of the power flow direction on the small-signal stability of islanded droop-based HMGs. Firstly, a linearized state-space model of an HMG is developed. Secondly, eigenvalue analysis is carried out to realize the dominant modes, which are the rightmost eigenvalues. Thirdly, participation factor analysis is performed to identify the system and control parameters that effect stability the most. Lastly, sensitivity analysis is conducted to determine the critical droop gains and stability margin. It is observed from the eigenvalue and sensitivity analysis that the dominant modes of HMGs become more stable as more power flows from dc to ac subgrid. On the contrary, an increase in the power flow from ac to dc subgrid degrades the HMG stability. Additionally, the sensitivity of the dominant modes to changes in ac and dc droop gains is studied under bidirectional power flow through the IC to ascertain their impact on the stability margins. Finally, time-domain simulations, in MATLAB/Simulink, suggest that more generation on the dc subgrid would enhance the overall HMG stability margin during islanding.

Aiming at the problems of transient over-current and over-voltage in the switching process of AC/DC hybrid microgrid in grid-connected mode and island mode, which leads to the sudden change of transmission power and seriously affects the power transmission quality. In this paper, an improved seamless switching control strategy of droop control with disturbance observer is designed. The main work is as follow: according to the diffident power transmission calculation methods of droop control in grid-connected mode and island mode, the adaptive switching is realized by detecting the current and frequency at Point of Common Coupling(PCC) of public power grid. Secondly, the switching from island mode to grid-connected mode will cause impact due to the difference of frequency, phase and amplitude between microgrid and public grid, and even cause system collapse. So the pre-synchronization control of frequency, phase and amplitude is designed. Based on the droop control, the disturbance observation(DOB) is added, which can quickly track the sudden change of system current, and suppress the sudden change by the difference between the tracking value and the actual value, so as to realize the smooth switching from island to grid. Finally, the effectiveness and feasibility of the control strategy are verify in Matlab/Simulink.

Multiple uncertainties from renewable energy sources, power loads and bidirectional AC/DC converter have brought great challenges to the energy management of AC/DC hybrid microgrid. In view of the issues, this paper proposes a temporally coordinated energy management strategy for AC/DC hybrid microgrid considering dynamic conversion efficiency of bidirectional AC/DC converter. According to the operation and loss characteristics of bidirectional AC/DC converter, a novel dynamic conversion efficiency model of bidirectional AC/DC converter is developed. To maintain high robustness at minimum operation cost, the proposed strategy is divided into two stages. The outputs of renewable energy sources, operation characteristics of microgrid components and time-of-use electricity price are comprehensively considered in the day-ahead economic energy management stage to minimize the daily operation cost. In the intraday rolling energy management stage, day-ahead schedules of controllable units are adjusted based on intraday ultra-short-term forecast data to suppress the intraday power fluctuations induced by day-ahead forecast errors. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed strategy can effectively mitigate the impact of multiple uncertainties and realize the economic operation of AC/DC hybrid microgrid.

The nonlinear load in AC/DC hybrid microgrid seriously affects the power transmission quality of bidirectional AC/DC interlinking converter (BIC). In this article, an improved Fryze-Buchholz-Depenbrock (FBD) harmonic current detection method combined with droop control is designed to suppress harmonic current control strategy. The decoupled double synchronous reference frame phase locked loop (DDSRF-PLL) with self decoupled network is used to eliminate the negative sequence fundamental frequency component, and the accurate phase detection can also be realized when affected by nonlinear load. The least mean square (LMS) algorithm adaptive filter can enhance the dynamic response ability when the load current suddenly changes. To solve the problem that the cut-off frequency of low pass filter (LPF) can not take into account the detection accuracy and response speed of FBD harmonic current detection method. Finally, Matlab/Simulink is used for simulation verification. The simulation results show that the improved control strategy not only realizes the bidirectional flow of power and maintains the DC bus voltage stability, but also reduces the total harmonic distortion (THD) at point of common coupling (PCC) by 0.45% compared with the traditional FBD control strategy. And the effectiveness and feasibility of the design method are proved.

Photovoltaic power generation system is easy to be affected by the environment and load changes, which will generate frequency and power fluctuations in the process of grid connection. The traditional PI control method is slow in response and poor in stability. To solve this problem, a new robust droop control design method is proposed in this study. An integral sliding mode controller is designed in the double closed - loop current inner loop control structure of bi - directional interconnected converter. The designed controller can not only suppress the voltage and frequency fluctuation of photovoltaic power generation system in the process of grid connection, but also ensure the stability of power system in different environmental conditions. The simulation results in MATLAB/Simulink show that the new robust droop control method is faster than the traditional PI control, and the fluctuation amplitude is reduced by nearly half, which ensures the continuous and stable operation of the grid after the photovoltaic power generation system is connected to the grid. For the higher control, this paper analyzes the working mode of the system and designs the power coordination control strategy under the grid-connected and isolated island mode. In grid-connected operation, the DC bus voltage can be stabilized by adjusting the operation mode of the DC energy storage and the on-off of the secondary load. In isolated island operation, the DC sub-microgrid is the main microgrid, and the DC energy storage is the main power regulating equipment. This is based on the principle of "energy is in short supply in the system, DC energy storage finally discharge, energy supply exceeds demand in the system, DC energy storage gives priority to charging" of DC energy storage. By adjusting the control strategy of the micro-source, the reference power, and the on-off of the secondary load, the overall power balance is maintained. • The generation mechanism and coupling relationship of ZSCC and active-reactive disturbance current are theoretically analyzed based on an averaged phase-leg model. • A PIR based ZSCC control scheme is proposed, the primary disturbance of ZSCC can be suppressed in a decentralized manner, and the coupled secondary disturbance of active-reactive current can also be eliminated. • An active-reactive disturbance current control scheme is proposed to suppress the active power oscillation and prevent the current distortion in the AC side. The parallel operation of bidirectional converters is a promising way to increase the power rating, efficiency and reliability, and maintain the power balance in an AC/DC hybrid microgrid. However, zero-sequence circulating current (ZSCC) and active-reactive disturbance current will be generated under the unbalanced conditions of the DC side and AC side. This paper aims to study the performance characteristics of the parallel converters and propose an effective control scheme to control the ZSCC and active-reactive disturbance current. Firstly, the generation mechanism of ZSCC and active-reactive disturbance current are analyzed based on an averaged phase-leg model. The coupling relationship is derived and two categories of disturbance can be found: the primary disturbance caused by the unbalanced condition of one side, and the secondary disturbance generated by the primary disturbance and the unbalanced condition of the other side. On this basis, a decentralized control scheme is proposed to suppress the primary disturbance, thereby eliminating the ZSCC and active power oscillation without the distortion of output current. Uncertainties from generation sources and loads have introduced tremendous challenges to the optimal dispatch of microgrids. This paper presents a novel two-stage min–max–min robust optimal dispatch model for a representative islanded ac/dc hybrid microgrid that faces uncertainties in renewable energy generation and customer loads. The first stage of the model determines the startup/shutdown state of the diesel engine generator and the operating state of the bidirectional converter of the microgrid. Then, the second stage optimizes the power dispatch of individual units in the microgrid. A new linearized equipment cost model is developed, counting for the degradation of energy storage. The use of this linear model helps maintain the linearity of the objective function without compromising solution accuracy. The column-and-constraint generation algorithm is implemented to efficiently obtain a robust dispatching plan for the microgrid, which minimizes the daily operating cost in the worst-case scenario. A case study and sensitivity analyses further demonstrate the rationale and the unique capability of the proposed model for the operation scheduling of ac/dc hybrid microgrids. This paper proposes a distributed control strategy that considers several source characteristics to achieve reliable and efficient operation of a hybrid ac/dc microgrid. The proposed control strategy has a two-level structure. The primary control layer is based on an adaptive droop method, which allows local controllers to operate autonomously and flexibly during disturbances such as fault, load variation, and environmental changes. For efficient distribution of power, a higher control layer adjusts voltage reference points based on optimized energy scheduling decisions. The proposed hybrid ac/dc microgrid is composed of converters and distributed generation units that include renewable energy sources (RESs) and energy storage systems (ESSs). Because current research on microgrid planning has not considered line factors, this paper analyses the planning of an AC/DC hybrid microgrid based on an AC microgrid. The capacity and siting of the distributed power resources are optimized, taking into account the influence of the line investment cost and the interactive power upper limit on the planning results. In the proposed model, the objective is aimed at minimizing the sum of investment cost, load-loss economic cost, and system losses, taking into consideration power balance constraints and feeder number constraints. The commercial solver CPLEX is applied to attain the optimal distributed power capacity and site. The theoretical results are verified by an actual system.

A promising configuration for future smart grids is an AC/DC hybrid topology that enables the integration of AC/DC energy resources and modern loads, thus permitting the consequent formation of AC/DC hybrid microgrids (HMGs). An understanding of AC/DC HMGs and their operational premise during islanding will certainly pave the way toward the realization of a future smart grid that includes a plug-and-play feature. However, the planning and operation of such isolated and hybrid systems are reliant on a powerful and efficient power flow tool. To this end, this paper proposes a novel unified, generic, and flexible power flow algorithm for isolated AC/DC HMGs. The power flow subproblems related to AC and DC subgrids are described mathematically by a set of linear and nonlinear equations and are solved simultaneously using a Newton trust-region method. The proposed algorithm is generic in the sense that it includes consideration of the unique characteristics of islanded AC/DC HMGs: a variety of possible topologies, droop controllability of the distributed resources (DRs), and bidirectionality of the power flow in the interlinking converters (ICs). The new power flow formulation is flexible and permits the easy incorporation of any changes in DR operating modes and IC control strategies. The developed algorithm was tested and applied for analyzing selected operational and control aspects of isolated AC/DC HMGs, including inaccurate power sharing and interlinking converters characterized by differing control strategies. In this paper, a new double-layer droop control mode for island AC/DC microgrids is proposed to realize autonomous and cost-effective operation. The optimal power reference iterative algorithm is used to realize the internal active power distribution in the subnet. On this basis, secondary frequency and voltage adjustments are introduced to realize the economic operation, autonomy and stability of the subnet. At the microgrid level, the local control strategy of cost micro increment deviation is designed to optimize the exchange power between subnets. The cooperation of the two can realize the global economic operation of the microgrid, as well as voltage following and frequency regulation in the subnet. The AC/DC hybrid microgrid (MG) has been widely promoted due to its high flexibility. The capability to operate in islanding mode is an appealing advantage of the MG, and also sets higher requirements for its control system. A droop control strategy is proposed on account of its distinguishing feature of automatic power sharing between distributed generations (DGs), but it introduces some drawbacks. Therefore, distributed cooperative secondary control is introduced as an improvement. In order to optimize the active power sharing in AC/DC hybrid microgrids, a number of cooperative control strategies have been proposed. However, most studies of AC/DC hybrid microgrids have mainly focused on the control of the bidirectional converter, ignoring the effects of secondary control within subnets, which may make a difference to the droop characteristic. This paper extends the cooperative control to AC/DC hybrid microgrids based on normalizing and synthesizing the droop equations, and proposes a global cooperative control scheme for AC/DC autonomous hybrid microgrids, realizing voltage restoration within AC and DC subnets as well as accurate global power sharing.
