- Abstract
[Despite the growing interest that presents academic international mobility for European University students for their later in life job prospects, the rate of Spanish students participating in the Erasmus programme is still small. The objective of this research was to determine the main barriers perceived by bachelor students who had not participated in the Erasmus programme assessing the differences between two bachelor degrees (Health vs. Social Sciences). A self-administered survey including reasons not to participate was used that had been set up for a previous European study including Spain. Results reveal the overall impact of lack of information on relevant issues such as the quality of university education system abroad and how they will be evaluated as well as financial barriers such as insufficient Erasmus grants or delays in the first grant payment. The barriers that better differentiate both bachelor degrees students are related to the bachelors’ curriculum i.e. insufficient training in English and presence of annual (vs. semester) courses as well as personal features. To increase participation, the focus should be on improving information and communication both on academic and financial issues, and changes in the bachelors’ curricula.]

We retrospectively studied the factors affecting the rate of hematopoietic reconstitution (HR) in 118 patients with hematological malignancies who underwent peripheral blood progenitor cell (PBPC) transplantation at a single institution. The patients received a median number of 6.6 x 10(8) nucleated cells/kg corresponding to 9.5 x 10(4) (0.5-578) CFU-GM/kg and 6.8 x 10(6) (0.2-161) CD34-positive cells/kg. The median number of days to reach 500 polymorphonuclear cells/mm3 and 50,000 platelets/mm3 was 12.5 (6-93) and 14.5 (6-440) days, respectively. No patient died from infection during the aplastic phase. By multivariate analysis, we found that the dose of CFU-GM infused was the only factor that significantly affects the HR rate (p < 0.0001). Moreover, patients with acute myelogenous leukemia or those transplanted after busulfan or total-body irradiation conditioning regimens had a slower engraftment (p < 0.08). These results could lead to identifying patients who need growth factors posttransplantation and/or the reinfusion of "back-up" marrow together with PBPC.

Background In January 2011, at our centre, we started a Rheumatology nurse-led telephone clinic, in order to monitor drugs toxicity and evolution of disease in patients with good disease control and on stable treatment. Objectives To describe the nurse-led telephone clinic activity in a Rheumatology Service, and its influence on the decrease of welfare load and safety of drugs management. Methods Descriptive retrospective study, collecting the nurse-led telephonic clinic between January 27th and December 30th 2011. This clinic was performed 3 days a week by one nurse with a computer with access to the clinical history and laboratory results, and an external telephone. The protocolized data collected included: duration of the call, necessity of doctor involvement and doctor visit, drug monitoring and diagnosis. Results A total of 978 telephone consultations were carried out for 414 patients. The diagnosis distribution was Rheumatoid Arthritis 45.2% (187), Osteoporosis 18.6% (77), Psoriatic Arthritis 13.1% (54), Ankylosing Spondylitis 9.7% (40), other Spondyloarthropaties 7.7% (32), Paget Disease 1.4% (6), SLE 1.2% (5), Polymyalgia Rheumatica 1.2% (5), and others 1.9% (8). The distribution of monitored drugs was Methotrexate 61% (597), Zoledronic Acid 14.7% (144), Leflunomide 10% (97), Sulfasalazine 5.9% (58), and others 15% (147). The duration of calls was fewer than 10 minutes in 91.5% (895) of the cases. Only in 8.7% (85) was consultation with a doctor necessary, with a doctor’s visit required in 30% (25) of them. In regards to inflammatory systemic diseases, this strategy allows saving 834 visits with a doctor. Conclusions Creating a nurse-led telephone clinic in Rheumatology allows the avoidance of unnecessary hospital visits, benefiting both patients and doctors. Disclosure of Interest None Declared

Ficoll-separated and monocyte-depleted mononuclear cells isolated from normal leukapheresis products were cryopreserved. These cells were incubated with or without 1,000 U/ml of recombinant interleukin-2 (rIL-2) for 4 days, and their lymphokine-activated killer (LAK) and natural killer (NK) activities were measured. IL-2 activation induced a significant increase in the expression of the CD25 antigen. There was no change in CD2, CD3, CD4, CD8, CD16, CD56 and CD57 cell marker expression. Cryopreservation did not induce any change in the membrane antigen expression and in the lymphocyte subsets. The NK activity was well preserved and the decrease of LAK activity of IL-2-activated cells after cryopreservation was not significant. In contrast, cells activated before cryopreservation had a significantly lower cytotoxic activity and the number of cells expressing the IL-2 receptor was also significantly reduced. However, the decrease of CD56 expression was not significant. CD25 expression seemed to be proportional to the LAK activity of the cells. This study demonstrated that cryopreserved lymphocytes, after 4 days of culture with rIL-2, could be as active and could express the CD25 and CD56 cell surface markers in the same manner as fresh LAK cells.

Marble slabs, typically used as façade panels to externally cover buildings, might permanently deform after a certain time of environmental exposure. This phenomenon, called bowing, is generally accompanied by a reduction of strength which increases with increasing degree of bowing. In the present paper, a theoretical model to calculate the progressive bowing of marble slabs submitted to temperature cycles is briefly recalled and applied to a specific Carrara marble sample. The marble is investigated by a microscopic analysis of thin sections cut along three orthogonal directions. The digital photographs are treated by an image analysis code which is capable of extracting grain size and shape distributions. In this way the anisotropic microstructure of the marble is quantified and taken into account in the numerical analyses. The influence of size distribution of grains as well as of their distribution of optic axis orientation on the slab bowing is discussed with the attempt of offering a quantitative tool for a better understanding of in situ bowing measurements.
