Near-extremal black holes have a long AdS$_2$ throat in their near-horizon region. Quantum fluctuations in the throat region are effectively governed by a quantum version of Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity with matter and are strongly coupled at low temperatures. We investigate how these quantum fluctuations affect the spectrum of emission of particles during Hawking radiation. We systematically consider the cases of Kerr and Kerr-Newman black holes for emission of scalar particles and discuss photon and graviton emission from the Kerr background. We find that at very low temperatures the quantum fluctuations radically change the nature of particle emission. Unlike the generic suppression of particle emission in the spherically symmetric Reissner-Nordstr\"om case, we uncover that for particles with non-vanishing angular momentum, the quantum-corrected emission can be substantially enhanced with respect to the standard semiclassical result., Comment: 45 pages, 15 figures

The two-dimensional gauged linear sigma model has provided a physical model for the quantum cohomology of a K\"ahler manifold, $X$. A three-dimensional version of such construction has recently been shown to shed light on models of quantum K-theory of $X$. We consider an $\mathcal{N}=1$ four-dimensional version consisting of a $U(1)$ vector multiplet and chiral multiplets, generalizing the two-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ setup. We compute the four-dimensional partition function on $D^2\times \mathbb{T}^2$ and demonstrates that it satisfies a difference equation which reduces to the deformed quantum K-theoretic one in the appropriate limit. We investigate the Krylov complexity of thermofield double states in systems with mixed phase space, uncovering a direct correlation with the Brody distribution, which interpolates between Poisson and Wigner statistics. Our analysis spans two-dimensional random matrix models featuring (I) GOE-Poisson and (II) GUE-Poisson transitions and extends to higher-dimensional cases, including a stringy matrix model (GOE-Poisson) and the mass-deformed SYK model (GUE-Poisson). Krylov complexity consistently emerges as a reliable marker of quantum chaos, displaying a characteristic peak in the chaotic regime that gradually diminishes as the Brody parameter approaches zero, signaling a shift toward integrability. The holographic approach to the strange metal phase relies on near-extremal asymptotically AdS$_4$ electrically charged black branes with important input from their AdS$_2$ near-horizon throat geometry. Motivated by the current understanding of the role of quantum fluctuations in the throat of near-extremal black holes, we revisit some transport properties. We model quantum gravitational and gauge fluctuations in the throat region by adopting results in Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity, effectively leading to quantum corrections for the dual CFT$_1$ Green's function in the near-horizon infrared region. We use the quantum-corrected Green's function to compute the conductivity for (2+1)-dimensional holographic strange metals and obtain corrections for the DC resistivity and the optical conductivity. We also compare the quantum-corrected holographic approach with results from the complex Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model and point out qualitative differences. Although experimental detection for the quantum-corrected holographic approach to the DC resistivity requires higher precision than current experimental accuracy, future experiments with improved technologies could detect these quantum corrections. Interestingly, including quantum corrections to the optical conductivity does provide a plausible explanation for the experimental anomalous power-law behavior detected in various strange metals., Comment: 40 pages, 11 figures

Ensuring user privacy remains critical in mobile networks, particularly with the rise of connected devices and denser 5G infrastructure. Privacy concerns have persisted across 2G, 3G, and 4G/LTE networks. Recognizing these concerns, the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has made privacy enhancements in 5G Release 15. However, the extent of operator adoption remains unclear, especially as most networks operate in 5G Non Stand Alone (NSA) mode, relying on 4G Core Networks. This study provides the first qualitative and experimental comparison between 5G NSA and Stand Alone (SA) in real operator networks, focusing on privacy enhancements addressing top eight pre-5G attacks based on recent academic literature. Additionally, it evaluates the privacy levels of OpenAirInterface (OAI), a leading open-source software for 5G, against real network deployments for the same attacks. We consider a truncation of the BMN matrix model to a configuration of two fuzzy spheres, described by two coupled non-linear oscillators dependent on the mass parameter $\mu$. The classical phase diagram of the system generically ($\mu \neq 0$) contains three equilibrium points: two centers and a center-saddle; as $\mu \to 0$ the system exhibits a pitchfork bifurcation. We demonstrate that the system is exactly integrable in quadratures for $\mu=0$, while for very large values of $\mu$, it approaches another integrable point characterized by two harmonic oscillators. The classical phase space is mixed, containing both integrable islands and chaotic regions, as evidenced by the classical Lyapunov spectrum. At the quantum level, we explore indicators of early and late time chaos. The eigenvalue spacing is best described by a Brody distribution, which interpolates between Poisson and Wigner distributions; it dovetails, at the quantum level, the classical results and reemphasizes the notion that the quantum system is mixed. We also study the spectral form factor and the quantum Lyapunov exponent, as defined by out-of-time-ordered correlators. These two indicators of quantum chaos exhibit weak correlations with the Brody distribution. We speculate that the behavior of the system as $\mu \to 0$ dominates the spectral form factor and the quantum Lyapunov exponent, making these indicators of quantum chaos less effective in the context of a mixed phase space., Comment: 34 pages, 3 tables, 21 figures. We revisit the existence of monotonic quantities along renormalization group flows using only the Null Energy Condition and the Ryu-Takayanagi formula for the entanglement entropy of field theories with anti-de Sitter gravity duals. In particular, we consider flows within the same dimension and holographically reprove the $c$-, $F$-, and $a$-theorems in dimensions two, three, and four. We focus on the family of maximally spherical entangling surfaces, define a quasi-constant of motion corresponding to the breaking of conformal invariance, and use a properly defined distance between minimal surfaces to construct a holographic $c$-function that is monotonic along the flow. We then apply our method to the case of flows across dimensions: There, we reprove the monotonicity of flows from $\mathrm{AdS}_{D+1}$ to $\mathrm{AdS}_3$ and prove the novel case of flows from $\mathrm{AdS}_5$ to $\mathrm{AdS}_4$., Comment: 28 pages, 3 figures; references added

The superconformal index of half-BPS states in ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills with gauge group $U(N)$ admits an expansion in terms of giant gravitons, ${\cal I}_N(q)={\cal I}_\infty(q) \sum\limits_{m=0}^\infty q^{mN}\hat{\mathcal I}_m(q)$, where $m$ is the number of giant gravitons. We derive this expansion directly in supergravity from the class of half-BPS solutions due to Lin, Lunin, and Maldacena in type IIB supergravity. The moduli space of these configurations can be quantized using covariant quantization methods. We review how this quantization leads to the graviton index, ${\cal I}_\infty(q)$, and present a modification that leads to the precise expression for the expansion in terms of giant gravitons. Our proposal provides a derivation of the giant graviton expansion directly in terms of supergravity degrees of freedom. The low-temperature thermodynamics of near-extremal rotating black holes has recently been revisited to incorporate one-loop contributions that are dominant in this regime. We discuss these quantum corrections to the gravitational path integral for asymptotically Anti de-Sitter black holes in four and five dimensions. In four dimensions we explicitly consider Kerr-AdS$_4$, Kerr-Newman-AdS$_4$ and the rotating black hole in ${\cal N}=4$ gauged supergravity with two scalars and two electric charges turned on. In five dimensions we explicitly address the asymptotically flat Myers-Perry black hole and the Kerr-AdS$_5$ black hole. In every case we find that tensor modes contribute $\frac{3}{2} \log T_{\rm Hawking}$ to the low-temperature thermodynamics. We identify the root cause of this universality in two facts: (i) the universal presence of a $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ subgroup of isometries in the near-horizon geometry and (ii) a set of cancellations in the Lichnerowicz operator. The objective of the Cyclotron Radiation Emission Spectroscopy (CRES) technology is to build precise particle energy spectra. This is achieved by identifying the start frequencies of charged particle trajectories which, when exposed to an external magnetic field, leave semi-linear profiles (called tracks) in the time-frequency plane. Due to the need for excellent instrumental energy resolution in application, highly efficient and accurate track reconstruction methods are desired. Deep learning convolutional neural networks (CNNs) - particularly suited to deal with information-sparse data and which offer precise foreground localization - may be utilized to extract track properties from measured CRES signals (called events) with relative computational ease. In this work, we develop a novel machine learning based model which operates a CNN and a support vector machine in tandem to perform this reconstruction. A primary application of our method is shown on simulated CRES signals which mimic those of the Project 8 experiment - a novel effort to extract the unknown absolute neutrino mass value from a precise measurement of tritium $\beta^-$-decay energy spectrum. When compared to a point-clustering based technique used as a baseline, we show a relative gain of 24.1% in event reconstruction efficiency and comparable performance in accuracy of track parameter reconstruction., Comment: submitted to Machine Learning: Science and Technology

We construct Type IIB string theory setups which, via double holography, realize two gravitational systems in separate AdS spaces which interact with each other and with a non-gravitational bath. We employ top-down string theory solutions with concrete field theory duals in the form of 4d $\mathcal N=4$ SYM BCFTs and a first-principles notion of double holography. The setups are used to realize pairs of `near' and `far' black holes from the perspective of the bath, which exchange Hawking radiation with each other and radiate into the bath. We identify three phases for the entropy in the bath characterized as no island, partial island and full island, and discuss the entropy curves. We study the entanglement entropy associated with a holographic RG flow from $\textrm{AdS}_7$ to $\textrm{AdS}_{4} \times \mathbb{H}_3$, where $\mathbb{H}_3$ is a $3$-dimensional hyperbolic manifold with curvature $\kappa$. The dual six-dimensional RG flow is disconnected from Lorentz-invariant flows. In this context we address various notions of central charges and identify a monotonic candidate $c$-function that captures IR aspects of the flow. The UV behavior of the holographic entanglement entropy and, in particular its universal term, display an interesting dependence on the curvature, $\kappa$. In many stochastic service systems, decision-makers find themselves making a sequence of decisions, with the number of decisions being unpredictable. To enhance these decisions, it is crucial to uncover the causal impact these decisions have through careful analysis of observational data from the system. However, these decisions are not made independently, as they are shaped by previous decisions and outcomes. This phenomenon is called sequential bias and violates a key assumption in causal inference that one person's decision does not interfere with the potential outcomes of another. To address this issue, we establish a connection between sequential bias and the subfield of causal inference known as dynamic treatment regimes. We expand these frameworks to account for the random number of decisions by modeling the decision-making process as a marked point process. Consequently, we can define and identify causal effects to quantify sequential bias. Moreover, we propose estimators and explore their properties, including double robustness and semiparametric efficiency. In a case study of 27,831 encounters with a large academic emergency department, we use our approach to demonstrate that the decision to route a patient to an area for low acuity patients has a significant impact on the care of future patients.

We investigate 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric gauge theories on $S^1 \times S^2$ and the corresponding 2d effective field theories arising in the limit of small ratio of radii, $\beta=R_{S^1}/R_{S^2}\to 0$. We evaluate the exact partition function of these theories in the framework of A-twisted backgrounds. As a result, we establish a finite-$N$ map between a particular, superconformal-index-inspired A-twisted partition function and the topologically twisted index. Taking the large-$N$ limit of the partition functions, we reproduce the entropy functions of either spherically symmetric, magnetically charged, or rotating, electrically charged asymptotically AdS$_4$ black holes. We then recast the problem of evaluating the 3d partition functions directly in the framework of rigid supersymmetry. By carefully tracking the background fields, we find that in the small-$\beta$ limit, the partition functions of these 3d large-$N$ superconformal field theories have a universal behavior related to the coefficients of the R-symmetry or flavor symmetry 2-point current correlation functions, thus obtaining a universal Cardy-like formula for 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theories., Comment: 36 pages, 2 figures; v2: expositions improved in Sec. 4.3, typos corrected in Sec. 4.4

In the context of gravitational theories describing renormalization group flows across dimensions via AdS/CFT, we study the role of higher-derivative corrections to Einstein gravity. We use the Null Energy Condition to derive monotonicity properties of candidate holographic central charges formed by combinations of metric functions. We also implement an entropic approach to the characterization of the four-derivative flows using the Jacobson-Myers functional and demonstrate, under reasonable conditions, monotonicity of certain terms in the entanglement entropy via the appropriate generalization of the Ryu-Takayanagi prescription. In particular, we show that any flow from a higher dimensional theory to a holographic CFT$_2$ satisfies a type of monotonicity. We consider two-point correlators of local operator insertions in a system of two Wilson-Maldacena loops in ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on both sides of the AdS/CFT correspondence. On the holographic side the correlator of two Wilson-Maldacena loops is given by a classical string world-sheet which in one phase connects two asymptotically AdS$_2$ regions and in the other phase is given by two disconnected AdS$_2$ caps; this configuration breaks supersymmetry as well as conformal invariance. We present a complete systematic account of the string world-sheet fluctuations, including the fermionic sector, and study the behavior of the holographic two-point correlators. On the field theory side we compute certain two-point correlators of local operator insertions by resumming sets of ladder diagrams. Our results demonstrate the efficacy of previously developed methods in tackling this non-conformal, non-susy regime.

Project 8 has developed a novel technique, Cyclotron Radiation Emission Spectroscopy (CRES), for direct neutrino mass measurements. A CRES-based experiment on the beta spectrum of tritium has been carried out in a small-volume apparatus. We provide a detailed account of the experiment, focusing on systematic effects and analysis techniques. In a Bayesian (frequentist) analysis, we measure the tritium endpoint as $18553^{+18}_{-19}$ ($18548^{+19}_{-19}$) eV and set upper limits of 155 (152) eV (90% C.L.) on the neutrino mass. No background events are observed beyond the endpoint in 82 days of running. We also demonstrate an energy resolution of $1.66\pm0.19$ eV in a resolution-optimized magnetic trap configuration by measuring $^{83\rm m}$Kr 17.8-keV internal-conversion electrons.
