Trypanosoma is a hemoflagellate protozoan that infects a variety of animal species and is transmitted in different ways. It is a zoonosis and anthropozoonosis of great importance in veterinary medicine. The present work aims to describe the clinical and laboratory alterations in a free-living dog in a rural area, infected by Trypanosoma spp, treated in the municipality of Sinop, north of Mato Grosso. Blood samples were collected for blood count, alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activity, creatinine, creatine kinase concentrations. The results found were a normochromic microcytic anemia, lymphopenia, trypomastigote forms of Trypanosoma spp. ALT and creatinine measurements were normal, but the serum creatine kinase level was above normal limits. Imidocarb dipropionate at a dose of 7 mg / kg subcutaneously in a single dose was prescribed.

Dogs are considered the main reservoir for visceral leishmaniasis infection in humans, a serious disease that is a relevant public health problem due to its wide geographical distribution. To date, there haven’t been notification of Canine Visceral Leishmaniasis (CVL) in official health agencies of Sinop city, state of Mato Grosso. CVL diagnosis is difficult due to the variety of symptoms of the disease. In addition, animals may remain asymptomatic for life. In this study, the frequency of anti Leishmania chagasi antibodies was observed in 201 dogs referred to the clinical routine of the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal University of Mato Grosso, Campus of Sinop, during a 67 days period, through immunochromatographic method (DPP). Obtained results showed that seven animals were positive while one hundred ninety four were negative to the test. This result is relevant as far as it may increase the risk of CVL dispersion to non-endemic areas, highlighting the need of implementation effective measures to quickly detect Leishmania chagasi and prevent epidemiological situations.

Intestinal obstruction is among the most common causes requiring surgical intervention in the small animal clinic. The more proximal and complete the obstruction, the more acute and intense the signs will be and the greater the likelihood of dehydration, electrolyte imbalance and even death. Among the causes of intestinal obstruction, intussusception may be the one with the highest prevalence. It is usually of idiopathic origin, has no racial and sexual predisposition, and its highest incidence is found in young animals. Predisposing factors are often associated, such as parasitism, gastroenteritis and foreign bodies where the treatment is usually surgical. In the present study we describe a case of a feline, female, one year and two months old with intestinal obstruction, presenting with four days' emesis, hypophagia, dehydration and apathy. This work aims to contribute to the knowledge and alert to a rapid differential diagnosis of intestinal obstructions which is a frequent and important disorder in the small animal clinic and is not always diagnosed in time.

Abstract Calvatia is a genus of gasteroid fungi, comprising about 47 species worldwide. In this paper we report the second worldwide occurrence of two poorly known species of Calvatia, recorded in the Cerrado biome of Brazil: C. oblongispora and C. nodulata. Detailed morphological descriptions and illustrations, including scanning electron micrographs of hyphae and basidiospores are provided, as well a discussion on their taxonomy and geographic distribution.

In this perspective article, several internationally recognized experts, members of the editorial team of this journal, discuss a selection of current hot topics identified in Food Science and Foodomics. The topics are comprised of the main areas of Food Science and Foodomics, namely, food safety, food authenticity, food processing, and food bioactivity. Logically, several of the discussed topics involve more than one of the mentioned main areas. Regarding food safety, the topics discussed are the use of analytical nanotechnology, nanometrology, nano-chromatography; the determination of organic contaminants based on MS and NMR; the impact of microplastics and nanoplastics on food or the contamination of foods with plant toxins. Regarding food authenticity, the paper discusses the role of MS, NMR, biosensors and the new trends in foodomics for food authentication. In terms of food processing, the work shows interesting perspectives on novel processing technologies, the effect of food processing on the gut microbiota or in the interaction among secondary metabolites and macromolecules; the development of active packaging, and the potential effects of introducing recycled plastics in food packaging; the new green extraction and encapsulation strategies of bioactive compounds from food by-products; and the anti-biofilm capacity of natural compounds/extracts/vegetal oils and essential oils. Food bioactivity and the relation between food and health includes the bioavailability and bioaccessibility of bioactive compounds; new trends and challenges in the interaction of nutraceuticals with biological systems; how food matrix impacts the bioaccessibility of nutrients and bioactive compounds; or the study of biodiversity, food and human health through one-health concept. We anticipate elaborations on these hot topics will promote further studies in Food Science and Foodomics.

Abstract Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has posed significant challenges to global healthcare systems, particularly impacting individuals with pre-existing conditions like hypertension. This study sought to assess the impact of the antihypertensive medications, losartan and enalapril maleate on SARS-CoV-2 infected cells. Vero E6 cells were infected and treated in vitro, evaluating cell viability via the MTT colorimetric assay. Additionally, the study measured relative levels of viral RNA and selected gene messenger RNAs using reverse transcriptase followed by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. Results: The findings revealed that losartan substantially reduced nucleocapsid RNA levels of SARS-CoV-2 to nearly undetectable levels, while enalapril maleate did not demonstrate a significant effect. In response to viral infection, the expression of il-18, p53, p21, and p62 increased compared to uninfected-untreated cells. Notably, il-6 expression was upregulated by both infection and treatments. A comparison between infected cells treated with losartan or enalapril maleate highlighted the presence of distinct profiles in the expression of il-6, p53, p21, and p62. Conclusions: The data from our study suggest that these medications could interfere with certain effects triggered by SARS-CoV-2 infection in Vero E6 cells. However, their influence appears to vary both quantitatively and qualitatively in the modulation of metabolic and signal transduction pathways.

Abstract Chromosomal inversions are associated with local adaptation in many species. However, questions regarding how they are formed, maintained and impact various other evolutionary processes remain elusive. Here, using a large genomic dataset of long-read and short-read sequencing, we ask these questions in one of the most abundant vertebrates on Earth, the Atlantic herring. This species has four megabase-sized inversions associated with ecological adaptation that correlate with water temperature. The S and N inversion alleles at these four loci dominate in the southern and northern parts, respectively, of the species distribution in the North Atlantic Ocean. By determining breakpoint coordinates of the four inversions and the structural variations surrounding them, we hypothesize that these inversions are formed by ectopic recombination between duplicated sequences immediately outside of the inversions. We show that these are old inversions (>1 MY), albeit formed after the split between the Atlantic herring and its sister species, the Pacific herring. There is evidence for extensive gene flux between inversion alleles at all four loci. The large Ne of herring combined with the common occurrence of opposite homozygotes across the species distribution has allowed effective purifying selection to prevent the accumulation of genetic load and repeats within the inversions.

Abstract The turtle shell is a remarkable structure that has intrigued not only evolutionary biologists but also engineering and material scientists because of its multi-scale complexity and various functions. Although protection is its most apparent role, the carapace and plastron are also related to many physiological functions and their shape influences hydrodynamics and self-righting ability. As such, analysing the functional morphology of the shell could help understanding the ecology of Triassic stem-turtles, which will contribute to the century-long debate on the evolutionary origins of turtles. Here, we used 3D imaging techniques to digitize the shells of two of the earliest stem-turtle taxa, Proganochelys and Proterochersis, and submitted their models to biomechanical and shape analyses. We analysed the strength performance under five predation scenarios and tested the function of two morphological traits found in stem-turtles, the epiplastral processes and an attached pelvic girdle. The latter, also present in the crown-lineage of side-necked turtles, has been suggested to increase load-bearing capacity of the shell or to improve swimming in pleurodires. Our results do not confirm the shell-strengthening hypothesis and, together with the results of our shape analyses, suggest that at least one of the first stem-turtles (Proterochersis) was an aquatic animal.

Abstract Advanced light management techniques can enhance the sunlight absorption of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). When located at the front, they may act as a UV barrier, which is paramount for protecting the perovskite layer against UV-enabled degradation. Although it was recently shown that photonic structures such as Escher-like patterns could approach the theoretical Lambertian-limit of light trapping, it remains challenging to also implement UV protection properties for these diffractive structures while maintaining broadband absorption gains. Here, we propose a checkerboard (CB) tile pattern with designated UV photon conversion capability. Through a combined optical and electrical modeling approach, this photonic structure can increase photocurrent and power conversion efficiency in ultrathin PSCs by 25.9% and 28.2%, respectively. We further introduce a luminescent down-shifting encapsulant that converts the UV irradiation into Visible photons matching the solar cell absorption spectrum. To this end, experimentally obtained absorption and emission profiles of state-of-the-art down-shifting materials (i.e., lanthanide-based organic-inorganic hybrids) are used to predict potential gains from harnessing the UV energy. We demonstrate that at least 94% of the impinging UV radiation can be effectively converted into the Visible spectral range. Photonic protection from high-energy photons contributes to the market deployment of perovskite solar cell technology, and may become crucial for Space applications under AM0 illumination. By combining light trapping with luminescent downshifting layers, this work unravels a potential photonic solution to overcome UV degradation in PSCs while circumventing optical losses in ultrathin cells, thus improving both performance and stability.

ABSTRACT Xacoxoxotlani chiapensis Ferreira new genus and new species, the second genus of the lampyrid subfamily Chespiritoinae is described from Chiapas, Mexico. The new taxon is diagnosed, illustrated and compared with Chespirito Ferreira, Keller and Branham, 2020. An updated diagnosis of the subfamily Chespiritoinae is provided along with a new identification key and distribution map for the genera and species within this subfamily.

ABSTRACT In 2000, Cleide Costa published a paper presenting the state of knowledge of the Neotropical Coleopte ra, with a focus on the Brazilian fauna. Twenty-four years later, thanks to the development of the Coleoptera section of the Taxonomic Catalog of the Brazilian Fauna (CTFB - Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil) through the collaboration of 100 coleopterists from all over the globe, we can build on Costa’s work and present an updated overview of the state of knowledge of the beetles from Brazil. There are currently 35,699 species in 4,958 genera and 116 families known to occur in the country, including representatives of all extant suborders and superfamilies. Our data show that the Brazilian beetle fauna is the richest on the planet, concentrating 9% of the world species diversity, with some estimates accounting to up to 15% of the global total. The most diverse family in numbers of genera is Cerambycidae (1,056 genera), while in number of species it is Chrysomelidae (6,079 species). Conotrachelus Dejean, 1835 (Curculionidae) is the most species-rich genus, with 570 species. The French entomologist Maurice Pic is the author who has contributed the most to the naming of species recorded from Brazil, with 1,794 valid names in 36 families, whereas the Brazilians Ubirajara R. Martins and Maria Helena M. Galileo are the only ones among the top-ten authors to have named species in the 21st century. Currently, approximately 144 new species of Brazilian beetles are described each year, and this average is projected to increase in the next decade to 180 species per year, or about one new Brazilian beetle every two days.

ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. The importance of the CTFB is evidenced by the elevated number of citations in the scientific literature in diverse areas of biology, law, anthropology, education, forensic science, and veterinary science, among others.

Abstract Our research aimed to elucidate the mechanism by which aurintricarboxylic acid (ATA) inhibits plasma membrane Ca2+-ATPase (PMCA), a crucial enzyme responsible for calcium transport. Given the pivotal role of PMCA in cellular calcium homeostasis, understanding how it is inhibited by ATA holds significant implications for potentially regulating physiopathological cellular processes in which this pump is involved. Our experimental findings revealed that ATA employs multiple modes of action to inhibit PMCA activity, which are influenced by ATP but also by the presence of calcium and magnesium ions. Specifically, magnesium appears to enhance this inhibitory effect. Our experimental and in-silico results suggest that, unlike those reported in other proteins, ATA complexed with magnesium (ATA·Mg) is the molecule that inhibits PMCA. In summary, our study presents a novel perspective and establishes a solid foundation for future research efforts aimed at the development of new pharmacological molecules both for PMCA and other proteins.

Obesity is a chronic metabolic disease that can promote serious comorbidities as maternal complications. Thus, the objective of this study was to analyze the prevalence of overweight and obesity, and the incidence of maternal complications in pregnant women of Sinop, Mato Grosso, Brazil. It was a retrospective cohort study with clinical and epidemiological data collected from the medical records of pregnant women diagnosed in 2020. Pregnant women were subdivided into three groups: eutrophic, overweight, and obese. Data from 700 pregnant women were evaluated, 251 in the eutrophic group, in the 220 overweight group and 229 in the obese group. The percentage of pregnant women with diabetes mellitus and arterial hypertension was significantly higher in the overweight and obesity groups when compared with the eutrophic group. The incidence of gestational diabetes mellitus was significantly higher in the overweight and obese groups when compared with the eutrophic group (p < 0.0001). The incidence of gestational arterial hypertension was also significantly higher in the overweight (6.8%) and obese (12.7%) groups when compared with the eutrophic group (1.2%) (p < 0.0001). The incidence of pre-eclampsia was also higher and statistically different in the overweight and obese groups. In conclusion, it was observed that most of the pregnant women presented with overweight/obesity and that this excess body weight contributed significantly to the incidence of several maternal complications.

Abstract Indigenous communities in Brazil have a complex epidemiological profile, which increases their chances of contracting sexually transmitted diseases. However, limited data is available on Treponema pallidum infections in this population. We investigated the seroprevalence and risk factors associated with T. pallidum infection in an indigenous population of Dourados, Mato Grosso do Sul. Blood samples were collected from September 2017 to March 2020, and the participants were interviewed to obtain comprehensive data on demography and sexual behavior. Serological tests were performed to detect T. pallidum infection. Besides conducting descriptive analysis, we performed Chi-squared tests and determined the bivariate odds ratio. The data were also analyzed using logistic regression. Among the 2190 invited individuals, 1927 (88%) were included in this study. The seroprevalence of T. pallidum infection was 2.91%. The results of a multivariate analysis showed that individuals who were 30–39 years old, with up to 4 years of school education, living in households without piped water, with a history of genital lesions, multiple sexual partners, and having a history of STIs had the highest seroprevalence of T. pallidum. This study showed that behavioral, social, and economic factors play an important role in the transmission of T. pallidum within the indigenous population. Thus, targeted intervention, including imparting education in the native language, mass testing initiatives, and implementing public policies to improve socioeconomic indicators, is needed to reduce the cases of syphilis in this community.

Abstract The Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) are one of the most used probes to understand the accelerated expansion of the Universe. Traditional methods rely on fiducial model information within their statistical analysis, which may be a problem when constraining different families of models. This work aims to provide a method that constrains $$\theta _{BAO}$$ θ BAO through a model-independent approach using the covariance matrix from the galaxy sample from thin redshift bins, later validated with a mock sample covariance matrix. We used widths of $$\delta z = 0.002$$ δ z = 0.002 separation for all samples as the basis for a sample covariance matrix weighted by the statistical importance of the redshift bin. Each sample belongs to the Sloan Digital Sky Survey: BOSS1, BOSS2, and eBOSS, with effective redshift $$z_{eff}$$ z eff : 0.35, 0.51, 0.71, and different numbers of bins with 50, 100, and 200. To get $$\theta _{BAO}$$ θ BAO , we correct the angular separation from the polynomial fit ( $$\theta _{fit}$$ θ fit ) by comparing each bin correlation function with the correlation function of the whole set, a parameter named $$\tilde{\alpha }$$ α ~ . We also tested such correction by choosing the bin at $$z_{eff}$$ z eff and found that for eBOSS $$\theta _{BAO}$$ θ BAO is in $$1 \sigma $$ 1 σ agreement with the Planck 18 model. Finally, we found that the sample covariances are noisy compared to the mocks for lower z samples, something expected due to nonlinear effects. Such noise impact can be seen in the parameter constraints but does not affect the eBOSS covariance sample. It is shown that mocks’ results do tend to its chosen fiducial cosmology $$\theta _{BAO}$$ θ BAO . BOSS1 and BOSS2 showed agreement with Planck 18 and an agreement with Pantheon + S $$H_0$$ H 0 ES when $$\tilde{\alpha }$$ α ~ is based on the bin $$z=z_{eff}$$ z = z eff .

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have been the subject of extensive scientific investigation in the last three decades and, currently, they make up one of the types of compounds most studied for their potential application in a wide range of distinct catalytic processes. Pristine MOF compounds provide several intriguing benefits for catalytic applications, including large interior surface areas and high densities of active sites; high catalytic reaction rates per volume; post-synthesis modifications with complementary catalytic groups; and the ability for multiple functional groups to catalyze the reaction. For most large-scale catalytic applications, including those in fuel processing, gas emission reduction, and chemical synthesis, pristine MOFs often show limited stabilities and opportunities for regeneration at high temperatures. As a result, the real applications of MOFs in these technologies are likely to be constrained, and a controlled thermal modification to prepare MOF-derivative compounds has been applied to induce crystalline structural changes and increase the structural stability of the MOFs, enhancing their potential applicability in more severe catalytic processes. Recent advances concerning the use of this strategy to boost the catalytic potential of MOF-derivative compounds, particularly for stable Zr-based MOFs, are outlined in this short review article.

Abstract Multimodal spectral imaging offers a unique approach to the enhancement of the analytical capabilities of standalone spectroscopy techniques by combining information gathered from distinct sources. In this manuscript, we explore such opportunities by focusing on two well-known spectral imaging techniques, namely laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy, and hyperspectral imaging, and explore the opportunities of collaborative sensing for a case study involving mineral identification. In specific, the work builds upon two distinct approaches: a traditional sensor fusion, where we strive to increase the information gathered by including information from the two modalities; and a knowledge distillation approach, where the Laser Induced Breakdown spectroscopy is used as an autonomous supervisor for hyperspectral imaging. Our results show the potential of both approaches in enhancing the performance over a single modality sensing system, highlighting, in particular, the advantages of the knowledge distillation framework in maximizing the potential benefits of using multiple techniques to build more interpretable models and paving for industrial applications.

Abstract COVID-19 is a multisystemic disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 airborne virus, a member of the Coronaviridae family. It has a positive sense single-stranded RNA genome and encodes two non-structural proteins through viral cysteine-proteases processing. Blocking this step is crucial to control virus replication. In this work, we reported the synthesis of 23 statine-based peptidomimetics to determine their ability to inhibit the main protease (Mpro) activity of SARS-CoV-2. Among the 23 peptidomimetics, 15 compounds effectively inhibited Mpro activity by 50% or more, while three compounds (7d, 8e, and 9g) exhibited maximum inhibition above 70% and IC50

O capital natural é compreendido pelo valor derivado dos benefícios obtidos a partir da combinação de recursos naturais, o qual sustenta a economia e a sociedade (Daly, 1996; Capitals Coalition, 2016). Considerando a relação entre as companhias e o capital natural, quais termos compõem as informações evidenciadas pelas companhias brasileiras acerca do capital natural, e como esses termos se associam? Para tal, a presente pesquisa tem como objetivo analisar a forma como as empresas brasileiras evidenciam o capital natural em seus relatórios. Nesse sentido, pretende-se analisar os relatos apresentados pelas 10 empresas brasileiras que apresentam o maior score ESG apresentado pelo Terminal Bloomberg. A metodologia é composta pela análise de conteúdo dos relatos, submetido a uma análise descritiva em conjunto com análises estatísticas textuais. Os resultados revelaram que de forma geral, os termos mais evidenciados pelas companhias ao reportar sobre o capital natural foram em relação as emissões atmosféricas, os recursos hídricos, a preservação e a energia renovável. No entanto, apesar de todos os termos estarem associados ao capital natural, ainda há uma distância ao integrar esses conceitos ao capital, considerando os documentos analisados. Em suma, foram apresentados termos que se associam com o capital natural, mas os achados reforçam há necessidade de padronização quanto à evidenciação das informações acerca do capital natural.

Abstract The growing prevalence of Internet of Things (IoT) devices hinges on resolving the challenge of powering sensors and transmitters. Addressing this, supply‐less IoT devices are gaining traction by integrating energy harvesters. This study introduces a temperature sensor devoid of external power sources, achieved through a novel luminescent solar concentrator (LSC) device based on a stretchable, adhesive elastomer. Leveraging a lanthanide‐doped styrene‐ethylene‐butylene‐styrene matrix, the LSC yielded 0.09% device efficiency. The resultant temperature sensor exhibits a thermal sensitivity of 2.1%°C−1 and a 0.06 °C temperature uncertainty, autonomously transmitting real‐time data to a server for user visualization via smartphones. Additionally, the integration of LED‐based lighting enables functionality in low‐light conditions, ensuring 24 h cycle operation and the possibility of having four distinct thermometric parameters without changing the device configuration, stating remarkable robustness and reliability of the system.

Abstract Triatominae are recognized as vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi, a protozoan which is the etiological agent of Chagas disease. A specimen of Triatoma delpontei was found at Porto Murtinho in Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil. This is the first report of the occurrence of T. delpontei to the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. With the present finding, the total number of triatomines recorded in Mato do Grosso do Sul reaches 17 species, while T. delpontei, previously recorded only from Rio Grande do Sul, is now recorded to a second Brazilian state. Based on the information available in the literature, a meticulous and organized compilation has been crafted, highlighting the cytogenetics differentiations of the species occurring in this state. This work emphasizes the importance of continuous research and surveillance on Triatominae, recognized as vectors of T. cruzi.

Abstract Candida albicans is often associated with oral candidiasis, and drug-resistance profiles have contributed to an increase in morbidity and mortality. It is known that Lactobacillus spp. acts by competing for adhesion to the epithelium, absorption of nutrients and modulation of the human microbiota. Therefore, they are important to assist in the host's microbiological balance and reduce the growth of Candida spp. Until now, there have been no reports in the literature of reviews correlating to the use of Lactobacillus spp. in the treatment of oral candidiasis. Thus, this review aims to highlight the mechanisms of action of Lactobacillus spp. and methods that can be used in the treatment of oral candidiasis. This is a study carried out through the databases PubMed Central and Scientific Electronic Library Online, using the following keywords: Oral Candidiasis and Lactobacillus. Original articles about oral candidiasis were included, with both in vitro and in vivo analyses, and published from 2012 to 2022. Lactobacillus rhamnosus was the most common microorganism used in the experiments against Candida, acting mainly in the reduction of biofilm, filamentation, and competing for adhesion sites of Candida spp. Among in vivo studies, most researchers used immunosuppressed mouse modelsof Candida infection. The studies showed that Lactobacillus has a great potential as a probiotic, acting mainly in the prevention and treatment of mucosal diseases. Thus, the use of Lactobacillus may be a good strategy for the treatment of oral candidiasis.

Background. Dialysis vintage is associated with worse outcomes after kidney transplantation. The reasons behind this observation include immunological and nonimmunological risk factors. To mitigate the influence of immunological factors, we examined the association between time on dialysis and clinical outcomes in a cohort of HLA-identical kidney transplant recipients. Methods. This retrospective study included 13 321 kidney transplant recipients between 1999 and 2016, of whom 589 were HLA identical followed for at least 5 y. Patient and graft survivals were compared according to dialysis time (12 mo) using the log-rank test and Cox regression analysis. We compared surgical complications, cytomegalovirus infection, acute rejection, disease recurrence, and the trajectories of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). Results. Median time on dialysis was 15 mo; 9.2% of patients received preemptive transplants, and 55.3% of patients were on dialysis for >12 mo. After a median follow-up time of 154 mo, there were no differences in unadjusted and adjusted patient and graft survivals (1, 5, 10, and 15 y) between the 2 groups. There were no differences in the incidence of surgical complications (6.2% versus 3.1%), acute rejection (6.1% versus 7.7%), cytomegalovirus infection (7.6% versus 4.0%), and disease recurrence (4.2% versus 4.0%), respectively. Abstract The use of yeasts has been explored as an efficient alternative to fungicide application in the treatment and prevention of post-harvest fruit deterioration. Here, we evaluated the biocontrol abilities of the Antarctic yeast strain Debaryomyces hansenii UFT8244 against the post-harvest phytopathogenic fungi Botrytis cinerea and Rhizopus stolonifer for the protection and preservation of strawberry fruit. The strongest inhibition of germination of B. cinerea (57%) was observed at 0 °C, followed by 40% at 25 °C. In addition, germ tubes and hyphae of B. cinerea were strongly surrounded and colonized by D. hansenii. Production of the enzymes β-1,3-glucanase, chitinase and protease by D. hansenii was detected in the presence of phytopathogenic fungus cell walls. The activity of β-1,3-glucanase was highest on day 12 of incubation and remained high until day 15. Chitinase and protease activities reached their highest levels on the day 15 of incubation. D. hansenii additionally demonstrated the ability to resist oxidative stress. Our data demonstrated that the main biocontrol mechanisms displayed by D. hansenii were the control of phytopathogenic fungal spore germination, production of antifungal enzymes and resistance to oxidative stress. We conclude that isolate D. hansenii UFT8422 should be further investigated for use at commercial scales at low temperatures.

Abstract The need to transition to more sustainable agriculture that is adaptable to environmental challenges, reducing dependence on chemical fertilizers and minimizing environmental impact, represents the new paradigm of the moment. In this scenario, studies with the adoption of bioinputs in corn cultivation emerge as a viable option for the sustainability of agricultural activity. Therefore, the objective was to evaluate the effect of doses of neem vegetable cake on the yield components of corn crops. An experimental design was used of randomized blocks was used, consisting of four doses of neem vegetable rendering (3 kg ha-1, 6 kg ha-1, 9 kg ha-1 and 12 kg ha-1) and a treatment control without the presence of organic fertilizer. The result indicates the presence of a significant effect of treatments with the application of neem cake on the main components of corn yield, including grain productivity, suggesting that the high carbon content present in the organic product can induce phytochemical effects and biological changes. in the soil, making it more productive. It was found that, when administering the maximum experimental dose, compared to the control group, there was a significant effect (p≤0.01) of 21.3% on grain productivity, jumping from 2,140 kg ha -1, when did not apply organic fertilizer, to 2,596 kg ha-1 with the application of 12 kg of neem cake per hectare. It is noted that the increase in grain productivity was in the proportion of 38 kg ha-1 of corn for each kilo of neem cake applied. To facilitate interpretation and decision-making, an analysis of the economic viability of neem cake for rainfed corn was also determined, also identifying the maximum experimental dose of 12 kg ha-1, as the most economically viable, providing an increase in profit of around R$ 119.92 per hectare, in relation to the control.

Abstract The lowland Atlantic Forest, at altitudes of below 500 m, is highly fragmented, and is home to many threatened species of birds. The Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro has a high concentration of threatened birds in the Americas and is an important residual of the dense ombrophilous formations of the Atlantic Forest, which includes the Reserva Biológica União, a high priority area for conservation of Atlantic Forest birds. This study compiled empirical and secondary records of threatened birds in this reserve and discusses potential factors determining their local occurrence. Since 2008, regular observations, including transect surveys and mist-netting, in addiction to secondary data, have provided records of 306 bird species, of which 49 appear on red lists at some level (state, national or global), including 34 listed as endangered, of which 13 are listed globally, eight of them dependent on well-conserved lowland rainforest. Future studies should include new areas of the reserve, with the aim of confirming the presence of additional threatened species. The long-term conservation of this fauna will depend not only on the adequate management of the reserve, but also the reestablishment of its connectivity with adjacent forest fragments and upland areas in the state.

Abstract The present study evaluated the hematological, antiparasitic and growth responses in tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) fed with diets supplemented with the microalgae Arthrospira platensis and Chlorella vulgaris (0%; 10% A. platensis; 10% C. vulgaris; and 5% A. platensis+5% C. vulgaris). Tambaqui (n=60, 62.57 ± 8.76 g) were fed for 20 days with experimental diets. Blood samples collection was done to determine hematological parameters, and gills were removed to identify and count monogenetic parasites. Supplementation with A. platensis 10% reduced red blood cells count, in consequence mean corpuscular volume and mean hemoglobin concentration increased. Total leukocyte, monocyte, eosinophil, and basophil counts reduced with the use of A. platensis. Higher monocytes, eosinophil, and basophil numbers in tambaqui fed with diet supplemented with 10% C. vulgaris were observed and may have been due to the presence of immunostimulants in this microalga composition. Reduction on total cholesterol in tambaqui that received both microalgae (A. platensis 5%+C. vulgaris 5%) may indicate that combined supplementation presented greater benefits to the health for C. macropomum than separately. Both microalgae were efficient against monogenetic parasites of tambaqui. Thus, the dietary use of the microalgae A. platensis and C. vulgaris provided immunostimulant and antiparasitic efficacy in C. macropomum.

O presente trabalho teve por objetivo determinar o carbono e o nitrogênio presentes na biomassa microbiana, usando a irradiação do forno de microondas em substituição ao clorofórmio nos métodos fumigação-incubação e fumigação-extração. Foram utilizadas duas amostras de um Podzólico Vermelho-Escuro, submetidas aos procedimentos de incubação e de extração, após serem fumigadas com clorofórmio e irradiadas com microondas por diferentes períodos (2, 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, 40 e 50 min). Observou-se que a irradiação durante 2 min foi suficiente para estimar o C e o N presentes na biomassa microbiana nos procedimentos de incubação e extração, com valores semelhantes aos verificados pela fumigação com clorofórmio. A irradiação com microondas reduziu os coeficientes de variação nas amostras de solo submetidas ao procedimento de extração, comprovando ser o método irradiação-extração o mais adequado para a estimativa do C e do N microbianos.

In this study, we compared different isoforms of basic fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2), overexpressed in stably transfected Human embryonic stem cells (hESCs), following motor root avulsion and repair with a heterologous fibrin biopolymer (HFB). Abstract Vortex generators (VGs) have been widely applied to wind turbines thanks to their potential to increase aerodynamic performance. Due to the complex inflow perceived by a rotor and the proneness to flow separation, VGs on wind turbines usually experience highly unsteady flow. While there are models that exist to simulate the steady effects of VGs, we lack a fast and efficient tool to model the unsteady performance of airfoils equipped with VGs. This paper adopts an unsteady double‐wake panel model with viscous–inviscid interaction developed to simulate a vertical axis turbine in dynamic stall, adding the capability of predicting the dynamic aerodynamic performance of VG‐equipped airfoils. The results of a series of steady and unsteady cases of an airfoil with different VG configurations in various pitch motions in free and forced transition are verified against experimental data. Results show that the double wake model offers results with sufficient accuracy compared with experimental data to claim the model's validity in a preliminary evaluation of an airfoil's capability to prevent stall with VGs. A few limitations, including the accuracy in prediction the transition location, separation, and reattachment, have been identified for future development.

Abstract Building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) is an emerging technology in the solar energy field. It involves using luminescent solar concentrators to convert traditional windows into energy generators by utilizing light harvesting and conversion materials. This study investigates the application of machine learning (ML) to advance the fundamental understanding of optical material design. By leveraging accessible photoluminescent measurements, ML models estimate optical properties, streamlining the process of developing novel materials, offering a cost-effective and efficient alternative to traditional methods, and facilitating the selection of competitive materials. Regression and clustering methods were used to estimate the optical conversion efficiency and power conversion efficiency. The regression models achieved a Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 10%, which demonstrates accuracy within a 10% range of possible values. Both regression and clustering models showed high agreement, with a minimal MAE of 7%, highlighting the efficacy of ML in predicting optical properties of luminescent materials for BIPV.

Urbanization is a widespread threat to freshwater ecosystems. After rainfall, urban streams often experience unnaturally fast water flows and acute increases in suspended sediment due to the high degree of adjacent impervious land surface. Suspended sediments may negatively affect fishes by impairing respiration, and reduced water clarity may also affect social behaviours such as schooling that are dependent on visual cues. Given these two mechanisms of harm, suspended sediments may therefore exacerbate the difficulty of swimming at high water velocities. We tested this idea using imperilled Redside Dace (Clinostomus elongatus) to examine the consequences of suspended sediment on swimming performance and schooling behaviour. Using individual fish, we assayed swimming performance (standard critical swim speed test) and tail beat frequency and amplitude under a range of ecologically relevant sediment concentrations. Next, we measured the impact of sediment on the cohesion and polarization of schools. Swimming performance of individual fish was not affected by suspended sediment levels we examined. School polarization was positively correlated with water flow overall and at the fastest flows we tested; schools were more polarized when exposed to sediment. School cohesion decreased with increasing flows and was unaffected by the suspended sediment levels we examined. Our results collectively suggest that swimming performance of Redside Dace may be resilient to ecologically relevant acute suspended sediment exposure.

Abstract Springtails (Collembola) inhabit soils from the Arctic to the Antarctic and comprise an estimated ~32% of all terrestrial arthropods on Earth. Here, we present a global, spatially-explicit database on springtail communities that includes 249,912 occurrences from 44,999 samples and 2,990 sites. These data are mainly raw sample-level records at the species level collected predominantly from private archives of the authors that were quality-controlled and taxonomically-standardised. Despite covering all continents, most of the sample-level data come from the European continent (82.5% of all samples) and represent four habitats: woodlands (57.4%), grasslands (14.0%), agrosystems (13.7%) and scrublands (9.0%). We included sampling by soil layers, and across seasons and years, representing temporal and spatial within-site variation in springtail communities. We also provided data use and sharing guidelines and R code to facilitate the use of the database by other researchers. This data paper describes a static version of the database at the publication date, but the database will be further expanded to include underrepresented regions and linked with trait data.

Abstract The presence of Andean plant genera in moist forests of the Brazilian Atlantic Coast has been historically hypothesized as the result of cross-continental migrations starting at the eastern Andean flanks. Here we test hypotheses of former connections between the Atlantic and Andean forests by examining distribution patterns of selected cool and moist-adapted plant arboreal taxa present in 54 South American pollen records of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), ca. 19–23 cal ka, known to occur in both plant domains. Pollen taxa studied include Araucaria, Drimys, Hedyosmum, Ilex, Myrsine, Podocarpus, Symplocos, Weinmannia, Myrtaceae, Ericaceae and Arecaceae. Past connectivity patterns between these two neotropical regions as well as individual ecological niches during the LGM were explored by cluster analysis of fossil assemblages and modern plant distributions. Additionally, we examined the ecological niche of 137 plant species with shared distributions between the Andes and coastal Brazil. Our results revealed five complex connectivity patterns for South American vegetation linking Andean, Amazonian and Atlantic Forests and one disjunction distribution in southern Chile. This study also provides a better understanding of vegetation cover on the large and shallow South American continental shelf that was exposed due to a global sea level drop.

Abstract Nano and microfluidic technologies have shown great promise in the development of controlled drug delivery systems and the creation of microfluidic devices with logic-like functionalities. Here, we focused on investigating a droplet-based logic gate that can be used for automating medical diagnostic assays. This logic gate uses viscoelastic fluids, which are particularly relevant since bio-fluids exhibit viscoelastic properties. The operation of the logic gate is determined by evaluating various parameters, including the Weissenberg number, the Capillary number, and geometric factors. To effectively classify the logic gates operational conditions, we employed a deep learning classification to develop a reduced-order model. This approach accelerates the prediction of operating conditions, eliminating the need for complex simulations. Moreover, the deep learning model allows for the combination of different AND/OR branches, further enhancing the versatility of the logic gate. We also found that non-operating regions, where the logic gate does not function properly, can be transformed into operational regions by applying an external force. By utilizing an electrical induction technique, we demonstrated that the application of an electric field can repel or attract droplets, thereby improving the performance of the logic gate. Overall, our research shows the potential of the droplet-based logic gates in the field of medical diagnostics. The integration of deep learning classification algorithms enables rapid evaluation of operational conditions and facilitates the design of complex logic circuits. Additionally, the introduction of external forces and electrical induction techniques opens up new possibilities for enhancing the functionality and reliability of these logic gates.

Abstract Building integrated photovoltaics is a promising strategy for solar technology, in which luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) stand out. Challenges include the development of materials for sunlight harvesting and conversion, which is an iterative optimization process with several steps: synthesis, processing, and structural and optical characterizations before considering the energy generation figures of merit that requires a prototype fabrication. Thus, simulation models provide a valuable, cost-effective, and time-efficient alternative to experimental implementations, enabling researchers to gain valuable insights for informed decisions. We conducted a literature review on LSCs over the past 47 years from the Web of ScienceTM Core Collection, including published research conducted by our research group, to gather the optical features and identify the material classes that contribute to the performance. The dataset can be further expanded systematically offering a valuable resource for decision-making tools for device design without extensive experimental measurements.
