Background. The COVID-19 pandemic has raised the importance of this problem to the first stage and has affected healthcare system around the world. Despite the more favorable COVID-19 course, the child population should be at focus of special attention, due to the active participation in its distribution. The course of COVID-19 includes a cascade of pathological processes accompanied by the generation of reactive oxygen species, which can have extremely negative consequences for the developing organism. The research of these processes in children is vital and will improve the effectiveness of preventive and therapeutic measures. The aim: to analyze changes in enzymatic and non-enzymatic links in the antioxidant defense in children and adolescents with diagnosed COVID-19 infection.Materials and methods. 17 children and adolescents (average age – 12.35 ± 4.01 years) were examined, including 8 boys (47 %) and 9 girls (53 %) with COVID-19 infection. The control group of children and adolescents (practically healthy) according to the «copy-pair» principle was selected. We used spectrophotometric methods.Results. In the group of children and adolescents with diagnosed COVID-19 infection, there were lower levels of total antioxidant activity (p < 0.0001), superoxide dismutase activity (p < 0.0001), content of reduced glutathione (p = 0.048) and retinol (p = 0.015), increase in glutathione reductase activity (p = 0.015) relative to the control.Conclusion. The obtained data indicate the insufficiency of antioxidant system components number in children and adolescents with diagnosed COVID-19 infection and indicate the advisability of antioxidant therapy using to stabilize these indicators.

Background. Insomnia occurs in more than half of menopausal women. These disorders can contribute to a change in the prooxidant-antioxidant balance, causing the damage to structural cellular elements. Currently, there is a lack of research on this issue.Aim. To carry out a comparative analysis of the level of advanced oxidation protein products in in periand postmenopausal women with insomnia.Materials and methods. The study included peri(n = 30) and postmenopausal (n = 60) women, who were divided into 2 groups (control and main groups) in each menopausal phase after being questioned using special sleep questionnaires: Insomnia Severity Index; Epworth Sleepiness Scale; Munich Chronotype Questionnaire. The advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP) levels was determined by immunoenzymatic assay using ImmunDiagnostik (German) kits on a BioTek EL×808 (USA) analyzer. Statistical analysis was performed using Mann – Whitney test.Results. Comparative analysis of the AOPP levels in control groups, depending on the menopausal periods, showed an increase in their levels in the postmenopausal period as compared to perimenopause (p < 0.05). When comparing the AOPP levels between the control and the main group in different menopausal periods, statistically significant differences were revealed only in the perimenopausal period towards a higher content in women with insomnia (p < 0.05). The presence of insomnia in postmenopausal women is accompanied by a higher AOPP levels as compared to the perimenopausal women (p < 0.05).Conclusion. The obtained results indicate the association between insomnia and oxidative proteins modification only in the perimenopausal period.

Background. Women with polycystic ovary syndrome in the early reproductive period have hormonal and metabolic dysfunction and an increased risk of long-term health consequences. The article presents the results of the study of hormonal indicators and the parameters of lipid peroxidation – antioxidant protection in women with polycystic ovary syndrome in early period of reproductive age (from 18 to 35 years old).Aim: evaluation of the functional state of the pituitary-ovarian-adrenal system and the lipid peroxidation – antioxidant protection system and the establishment of intersystemic relationships in women of the early reproductive period with polycystic ovary syndrome.Materials and methods. Study included 33 women with ovarian hyperandrogenism and 17 healthy women of early reproductive age. A questionnaire survey, general medical and gynecological examinations, and ultrasound examination of the pelvic organs were conducted. Immunoenzyme method for detection the concentration of hormones, spectrophotometric and spectrofluorometric (determination of the concentration of lipoperoxidation products, parameters of antioxidant protection), statistical methods were used.Results. Women of early reproductive age (from 18 to 35 years old) with polycystic ovary syndrome characterized by an increase of 17-OH-progesterone by 2.2 times (p = 0.0005), and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate by 1.3 times (p = 0.0001). A decrease in the total antioxidant activity of the blood by 25 % (p = 0.0005), an increase in the content of oxidized glutathione by 14 % (p = 0.0001) and a decrease in the concentration of retinol by 26 % (p = 0.0012) compared to the control values were shown. The increase in the degree of oxidative stress was indicated by the value of the coefficient of oxidative stress equal to 2.8.Conclusion. The obtained data indicate the features of the functional state of the pituitary-ovarian-adrenal system and the processes of LPO–AOP, as well as the need for timely diagnosis and effective correction of hormonal and metabolic disorders in women with polycystic ovary syndrome in the early reproductive period.

This review examines the variability of the glutathione system in sleep pathologies. Modern sleep theory assumes a restorative sleep function, including active utilization of oxidants and protection from excessive oxidation. In this review article, we conducted an analysis of domestic and foreign literature and summarized data relating aspects of the functioning of the glutathione system in somnological disorders. Various authors have established systemic oxidative stress in insomnia due to reduced activity of glutathione peroxidase. Also, oxidative stress in insomnia is observed in certain areas of the brain due to a decrease in glutathione levels in them. Studies of the functioning of the glutathione system genes in insomnia, whose polymorphisms may include alleles that inhibit oxidation, are arousing interest. An alternative pattern of changes is observed in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. The apnea stage affects the indicators of the glutathione system. The values of the glutathione system indicators increase with mild to moderate apnea. This is an adaptive response mechanism. Also, the development of oxidative stress in apnea, which leads to disorders in the glutathione system, is cyclical. As a result, people with apnea do not have sufficient replenishment of the components of the glutathione system during sleep. The existing modification does not allow to fully respond to the intensification of peroxide processes and to restrain the activation of excessive oxidation.

The aim of our research was to assess the intensity of oxidative stress (OS) in children and adolescents with COVID-19 using the oxidative stress index (OSI). Methods and Results: The study was conducted between May 2020 and March 2021. The main group included 17 children and adolescents [8(47.1%) boys and 9(52.9%) girls; mean age of 12.35±4.01 years] with diagnosed COVID-19 infection (mild to moderate course) selected as a result of the primary diagnostic examination from among those admitted to hospitalization at the Irkutsk Regional Infectious Diseases Clinical Hospital. The control group included 17 healthy children and adolescents (average age of 12.35±4.01 years) matched by copy-pair type. Various pathologies, in particular hypertension, accompany violation of the processes of free radical oxidation. The state of the system lipid peroxidation – antioxidant protection can be assessed only by a complex of biochemical methods. The chemiluminescent method is used to obtain a faster result. The method has a number of advantages: measurement of chemiluminescence parameters is carried out in natural conditions and does not require sample preparation, is highly selective, it can be used to identify the presence of free radical pathology, analysis of the intensity of lipid peroxidation processes, the effectiveness of treatment with antioxidant medicament. The aim of the research was to study the lipid peroxidation under hypertension and stress by chemiluminescence. The experiment was conducted on male rats of the ISIAH line. The experiment consisted of 2 stages: stage of alarm and stage of chronic stress. We found that, depending on the type of stress, the state of the system lipid peroxidation-antioxidant protection differed. The role of stress in violation of the processes of lipoperoxidation in hypertension was established. The efficacy of the chemiluminescence method as an alternative to a complex of biochemical methods is shown. Express assessment of pro- and antioxidant status is possible for patients with hypertension.
