Childhood education programmes aiming at incorporating topics related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) have gained recognition as key levers in the progress of education for all students. Inspiring young people to take part in the discovery and delivery of science is of paramount importance not only for their well-being but also for their future human development. To address this need, an outreach model entitled OH-Kids was designed to empower pupils through the development of high-quality STEM learning experiences based on a research project. The model is an opportunity for primary school learners to meet geoscientists while receiving the take-home message that anyone can get involved in scientific activities. The effort is part of a research project aimed at the real-time monitoring of precipitation in Mexico City, which is a smart solution to rainfall monitoring using information and communications technologies. The argument behind this effort is that in order to produce the next generation of problem-solvers, education should ensure that learners develop an appreciation and working familiarity with a real-world project. Results show success at introducing the role of researchers and STEM topics to 6–12-year-old learners.

Worldwide, floods are acknowledged as one of the most destructive hazards. In human-dominated environments, their negative impacts are ascribed not only to the increase in frequency and intensity of floods but also to a strong feedback between the hydrological cycle and anthropogenic development. In order to advance a more comprehensive understanding of this complex interaction, this paper presents the development of a new open-source tool named Itzï that enables the 2-D numerical modelling of rainfall–runoff processes and surface flows integrated with the open-source geographic information system (GIS) software known as GRASS. Therefore, it takes advantage of the ability given by GIS environments to handle datasets with variations in both temporal and spatial resolutions. Furthermore, the presented numerical tool can handle datasets from different sources with varied spatial resolutions, facilitating the preparation and management of input and forcing data. This ability reduces the preprocessing time usually required by other models. Itzï uses a simplified form of the shallow water equations, the damped partial inertia equation, for the resolution of surface flows, and the Green–Ampt model for the infiltration. The source code is now publicly available online, along with complete documentation. The numerical model is verified against three different tests cases: firstly, a comparison with an analytic solution of the shallow water equations is introduced; secondly, a hypothetical flooding event in an urban area is implemented, where results are compared to those from an established model using a similar approach; and lastly, the reproduction of a real inundation event that occurred in the city of Kingston upon Hull, UK, in June 2007, is presented. The numerical approach proved its ability at reproducing the analytic and synthetic test cases. Moreover, simulation results of the real flood event showed its suitability at identifying areas affected by flooding, which were verified against those recorded after the event by local authorities.

En este trabajo se presenta una aplicación práctica del uso de las tecnologías de la información y comunicación (TIC) en la gestión de riesgos de desastres debidos a precipitaciones extremas en regiones urbanas. El objetivo es plantear, a partir del caso de estudio del deslizamiento del cerro del Chiquihuite, una de las formas en las que se puede aprovechar la información del Observatorio Hidrológico del Instituto de Ingeniería de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (OH-IIUNAM) para mejorar la gestión de desastres generadas por precipitaciones extremas. En el caso de estudio, se utilizan los datos del OH-IIUNAM para el análisis temporal y espacial de las tormentas que se presentaron en la Zona Metropolitana del Valle de México entre el 1 y 9 de septiembre de 2021; también se considera el sismo que ocurrió el 7 de septiembre del mismo año. La conjunción de ambos fenómenos produjo un deslizamiento del cerro el 10 de septiembre de 2021, que provocó grandes daños en las viviendas y pérdidas humanas. En el análisis temporal realizado se encontró que las tormentas más importantes ocurrieron entre los días 1 y 8 de septiembre, destacando las tormentas de los días 6 y 7 en intensidad y precipitación acumulada. En cuanto al análisis espacial, se utilizó la interpolación IDW (interpolación de distancia inversa ponderada) para estimar la precipitación en toda la Ciudad de México (CDMX) en el periodo del 1 al 9 de septiembre, encontrándose que la zona del cerro del Chiquihuite fue una de las áreas donde cayó mayor cantidad de agua de lluvia.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to present an innovative and transformative online approach to sustainable development in management education. Design/methodology/approach: A case study and action research were carried out in a Brazilian business school during an academic semester. Specifically, in the context of a discipline entitled "Socio-environmental Management in Companies", several pedagogical strategies were designed and implemented to ensure undergraduate students' learning. This study involved the collection and analysis of both quantitative and qualitative data from multiple sources, which were analysed using descriptive statistics, thematic and content analysis techniques. Findings: By assessing the strategies, tools and resources used during the course, the findings of this study show that the discipline supported the students' transformative learning towards sustainability. Research limitations/implications: This study has both theoretical and practical implications by describing and evaluating an innovative and engaging pedagogical approach to sustainable development in management education. Originality/value: The approach developed through this research provides educators and higher education institutions with innovative strategies for transformative learning towards sustainability in management education. Moreover, the approach can be adapted and implemented in other fields of knowledge.

This investigation aims to study the propagation of meteorological uncertainty within a cascade modelling approach to flood prediction. The methodology was comprised of a numerical weather prediction (NWP) model, a distributed rainfall–runoff model and a 2-D hydrodynamic model. The uncertainty evaluation was carried out at the meteorological and hydrological levels of the model chain, which enabled the investigation of how errors that originated in the rainfall prediction interact at a catchment level and propagate to an estimated inundation area and depth. For this, a hindcast scenario is utilised removing non-behavioural ensemble members at each stage, based on the fit with observed data. At the hydrodynamic level, an uncertainty assessment was not incorporated; instead, the model was setup following guidelines for the best possible representation of the case study. The selected extreme event corresponds to a flood that took place in the southeast of Mexico during November 2009, for which field data (e.g. rain gauges; discharge) and satellite imagery were available. Uncertainty in the meteorological model was estimated by means of a multi-physics ensemble technique, which is designed to represent errors from our limited knowledge of the processes generating precipitation. In the hydrological model, a multi-response validation was implemented through the definition of six sets of plausible parameters from past flood events. Precipitation fields from the meteorological model were employed as input in a distributed hydrological model, and resulting flood hydrographs were used as forcing conditions in the 2-D hydrodynamic model. The evolution of skill within the model cascade shows a complex aggregation of errors between models, suggesting that in valley-filling events hydro-meteorological uncertainty has a larger effect on inundation depths than that observed in estimated flood inundation extents.

Resumo A pesquisa caracteriza o modo de organização de três expressões da Agricultura Urbana (AU) calcada na tipologia estabelecida por Feniman (2014): Assistida, Vernacular e Politizada. Metodologicamente adotou-se uma estratégia de pesquisa de casos de base qualitativa e natureza descritivo-exploratória, contemplando a coleta de dados e posterior análise comparativa das organizações. Os resultados apontam que o modo de organização da Assistida é de base técnica instrumental, dependente da assistência do poder público, com favorecimento da produção de espécies com valor de mercado e estruturação social formalizada que limita integração social interna e externa, além de apresentar menor utilização de tecnologias de produção não convencionais. A Organização Vernacular tem base de estruturação informal e afetiva, que valoriza saberes ancestrais e a manutenção de práticas tradicionais, estando fixada em forte enlace familiar. A Organização Politizada manifesta o desejo dos participantes em conferir à agricultura urbana um aspecto integrativo, alternativo, soberano, autônomo e inovador, embora apresente limitações no que diz respeito à constituição de uma vida comunitária estável. O estudo demonstra que os modos de organização observados se relacionam com diferentes dinâmicas de ocupação do espaço, participação, estruturação social, uso de tecnologias de produção, relações com poder público e inovação social.

Chromoblastomycosis, an implantation mycosis, is a neglected tropical disease that causes decreased quality of life, stigma, and disability. The global burden of disease is unknown and data on disease epidemiology and outcomes are severely limited by a lack of access to needed diagnostic tools and therapeutics. The World Health Organization outlined targets for chromoblastomycosis in the Road Map for Neglected Tropical Diseases 2021-2030, but little progress has been made in initiating and implementing an effective control program globally. This lack of guiding policy and progress led to the recent formation of a Global Chromoblastomycosis Working Group which has developed a global chromoblastomycosis strategy. We describe this strategy, which outlines specific steps needed to improve technical progress, strategy and service delivery, and enablers. Clinicians, researchers, public and government officials, patients, and policy makers can align their time, expertise, and resources to improve the lives of communities affected by chromoblastomycosis through this strategy.

Wave-induced extreme water levels in the Puerto Morelos fringing reef lagoon are investigated by means of a phase-resolving non-hydrostatic wave model (SWASH). This model solves the nonlinear shallow water equations including non-hydrostatic pressure. The one-dimensional version of the model is implemented in order to investigate wave transformation in fringing reefs. Firstly, the numerical model is validated with (i) laboratory experiments conducted on a physical model (Demirbilek et al., 2007)and (ii) field observations (Coronado et al., 2007). Numerical results show good agreement with both experimental and field data. The comparison against the physical model results, for energetic wave conditions, indicates that high- and low-frequency wave transformation is well reproduced. Moreover, extreme water-level conditions measured during the passage of Hurricane Ivan in Puerto Morelos are also estimated by the numerical tool. Subsequently, the model is implemented at different along-reef locations in Puerto Morelos. Extreme water levels, wave-induced setup, and infragravity wave energy are estimated inside the reef lagoon for different storm wave conditions (Hs >2 m). The numerical results revealed a strong correlation between the offshore sea-swell wave energy and the setup. In contrast, infragravity waves are shown to be the result of a more complex pattern which heavily relies on the reef geometry. Indeed, the southern end of the reef lagoon provides evidence of resonance excitation, suggesting that the reef barrier may act as either a natural flood protection morphological feature, or as an inundation hazard enhancer depending on the incident wave conditions.

Introduction: Frailty and depression risk are common in older adults undergoing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) treatment. However, little is known about this association in people with COPD residing in low- and middle-income countries. Objective: The study aimed to establish the relationship between frailty and depression among ambulatory adults over 60 years with COPD in Santa Marta, Colombia. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was designed in which consecutive patients from the pulmonology outpatient clinic were invited to participate. Frailty was quantified with the FiND (Frail Non-Disabled [FiND] Screening Tool) [Cronbach's alpha 0.65] and depression with the Primary Care Screening Questionnaire for Depression (PSQD) [Cronbach's alpha 0.73]. Results: Three-hundred forty-nine patients with COPD between 60 and 98 years participated (M=75.6, SD=8.4), 61.9% were males, and 19.8% presented a C or D combined evaluation. Two hundred eighty-six patients (76.8%) presented frailty with and without mobility disability, and 31.2% presented depression. The relationship of frailty with depression remained significant, even after adjusting for confounding variables (OR=2.80, 95%CI 1.42-5.51). Conclusions: Frailty and depression are significantly associated after adjusting for confounding variables. More studies are welcome.

ABSTRACT Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze the association between participation in fitness-related exercises (FRE) and body image dissatisfaction (BID) in adolescents and evaluate the interaction between physical exercise and nutritional status in this association. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2015 involving 799 adolescents (10–16 years old) from 14 public schools in Curitiba (PR), Brazil. BID was assessed using the Body Shape Questionnaire and the Silhouette Scale. The FRE was classified as “does not practice,” “practices ≤300 min/week,” and “practices >300 min/week” by the Physical Activity Questionnaire for Adolescents. Poisson and multinomial logistic regressions, adjusted for sex, sexual maturation, and nutritional status analyzed the association of FRE and BID. Results: The BID prevalence was 28.3%; 52.4% of the adolescents wanted to reduce their silhouettes; and 48.7% did not practice FRE. Adolescents who practiced FRE >300 min/week had a 28% higher prevalence for some level of BID (PR 1.28; 95%CI 1.08–1.52) and a 46% lower chance of wanting to reduce silhouettes (OR 0.54; 95%CI 0.35–0.82), compared to nonpractitioners. There was no interaction between FRE and nutritional status in association with BID. Conclusions: The adolescents who practice FRE >300 min/week are likely to have some level of BID and are less likely to report the desire to increase their silhouettes, regardless of their nutritional status.

The strong coupling of atoms to optical cavities can improve optical lattice clocks as the cavity enables metrologically useful collective atomic entanglement and high-fidelity measurement. To this end, it is necessary to cool the ensemble to suppress motional broadening, and advantageous to maximize and homogenize the atom-cavity coupling. We demonstrate resolved Raman sideband cooling via the cavity as a method that can simultaneously achieve both goals. In 200 ms of Raman sideband cooling, we cool ^{171}Yb atoms to an average vibration number 〈n_{x}〉=0.23(7) in the tightly binding direction, resulting in 93% optical π-pulse fidelity on the clock transition ^{1}S_{0}→^{3}P_{0}. During cooling, the atoms self-organize into locations with maximal atom-cavity coupling, which will improve quantum metrology applications.

Abstract The objective of this work was to estimate the repeatability coefficients of variables related to fruit and nut production, the minimum number of crops required for genotype selection, and the permanent phenotypic correlation coefficients between variables in a cultivated population of Amazon nut. A total of 40 genotypes from seeds, belonging to an agroforestry system implemented in 1995, in the state of Roraima, Brazil, were evaluated during ten years for six variables related to fruit and nut production. The genetic-statistical analyses were performed using the maximum restricted likelihood and best linear unbiased prediction (REML/BLUP) method, based on the basic model of repeatability, without an experimental design, of the Selegen-REML/BLUP software. Genetic variability between genotypes and a moderate regularity in the repetition of the studied variables between different harvests were detected. The number of harvests required to reach a coefficient of determination of 80% ranged from seven, for the variables average nut weight per fruit and number of fruits per plant, to nine, for average nut weight. The correlation results indicate the possibility of indirect selection for nut production through the evaluation of the number and weight of fruits per plant.

Este estudio examina la relación entre la enseñanza de la física y la energía renovable dentro de la literatura académica actual, utilizando una revisión sistemática para analizar textos desde 1998 hasta 2023. Un énfasis pronunciado en las energías renovables refleja un enfoque de investigación integrador, mientras que la 'Física Ambiental' destaca como la principal disciplina, subrayando la implicación de la academia con desafíos como el cambio climático. La presencia sustancial de 'Energía Solar' corresponde a avances en la tecnología fotovoltaica y su aplicabilidad global. Los enfoques socioconstructivistas dominantes en la pedagogía fomentan un aprendizaje profundo y reflexivo. La inclusión de TIC y ABP indica un cambio hacia técnicas educativas interactivas. El estudio subraya el papel de la interdisciplinariedad en la formación de profesionales preparados para impulsar un futuro energético sostenible.

In educational environments, students are considered to be one of most crucial subjects. Identifying and supporting students' voices concerning changes in the educational process are important for adaptation and developing Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in an educational space. This study identified the level of student readiness for changes in an educational space concerning ICT development and their views on utilizing ICTs in the educational process, thereby developing perspectives. Further, the association between student age, manner in which the study is adopted, and their level of proficiency in use of computers and the Internet were verified. A sample of 379 students at the Industrial University of Tyumen completed the survey. We used a sociological survey with a multiple-choice questionnaire about educational preferences and the weaknesses of higher learning educational space, where ICTs are used. Results have shown that there is an inverse association between age and level of proficiency in use of computers and the Internet. However, no association was observed between the manner in which the students conducted their studies and their perspective on the level of proficiency in personal computers and the Internet. Students were able to identify weaknesses in the organization of the virtual educational space, professional preparation of teachers, and problems, such as lack of self-organization skills, low level of proficiency of ICTs, etc. Students showed interest in e-learning and believed that virtual educational space makes professional education better.

Strawberry, a profitable crop, adapts well to diverse environments. This study evaluated the stability of fruit quality in different strawberry varieties produced as green plants without chilling during the harvest season in northern Uruguay. The focus was on understanding the impact of harvest date versus agricultural practices (different orchards and growers) on key fruit quality variables such as color, firmness, sugars, and acidity. Results indicated that the INIA Yrupé variety showed greater stability in external coloration and sugar content across harvest dates, suggesting that standardizing fruit coloration is viable under challenging conditions. INIA Guapa consistently met minimum requirements for soluble solids and ratio, with stable acidity and red coloration. Firmness was positively correlated with ratio (r = 0.81) and negatively impacted by rainfall 2–3 days before harvest. The findings suggest that harvest date has a more significant impact on INIA Yrupé fruit quality than growing conditions or practices, with variability observed in firmness and ratio but minimal variation in fruit coloration. These insights highlight the importance of harvest timing for maintaining stable fruit quality traits, which is crucial for breeding programs and ensuring consistent sensory quality and crop profitability.

The study aimed to adapt and evaluate a scale to measure COVID-19-CED in COVID-19 survivors. A sample of 330 COVID-19 survivors filled out the COVID-19 Perceived Discrimination Scale (C-19-PDS). C-19-PDS was adapted from the Tuberculosis Perceived Discrimination Scale (11 items). Confirmatory factor analysis showed poor goodness-of-fit indicators. However, the 5-item version of the C-19-PDS showed better goodness-of-fit indicators, high internal consistency, and non-gender DIF. This instrument is recommended to evaluate COVID-19-CED in Colombian and other Spanish-speaking populations.

La historia constitucional del derecho invisibiliza ciertos actores parte de la reforma constitucional de 1949. Analizando las peticiones de mujeres presentadas al Congreso de la Nación y la Asamblea Constituyente, el trabajo indaga cómo durante el primer peronismo esos grupos articularon sus demandas individuales con reclamos colectivos, en tiempos donde la noción liberal de los derechos fue desafiada constitucionalmente, resaltando el uso del lenguaje de derechos presente en sus demandas. Recurriremos al análisis documental enfocándonos en perspectivas “desde abajo” de la historia crítica del derecho que acentúen el rol de estos actores en la reforma y sus estrategias de participación.

Over the past decade, distributed acoustic sensing has been utilized for structural health monitoring in various applications, owing to its continuous measurement capability in both time and space and its ability to deliver extensive data on the conditions of large structures using just a single optical cable. This work aims to evaluate the performance of distributed acoustic sensing for monitoring a multilayer structure on a laboratory scale. The proposed structure comprises four layers: a medium-density fiberboard and three rigid polyurethane foam slabs. Three different damages were emulated in the structure: two in the first layer of rigid polyurethane foam and another in the medium-density fiberboard layer. The results include the detection of the mechanical wave, comparing the response with point sensors used for reference, and evaluating how the measured signal behaves in time and frequency in the face of different damages in the multilayer structure. The tests demonstrate that evaluating signals in both time and frequency domains presents different characteristics for each condition analyzed. The supervised support vector machine classifier was used to automate the classification of these damages, achieving an accuracy of 93%. The combination of distributed acoustic sensing with this learning algorithm creates the condition for developing a smart tool for monitoring multilayer structures.
