Abstract In this paper, we obtain a complete list of stationary and axisymmetric spacetimes, generated from a Minkowski spacetime using the Ernst technique. We do so by operating on the associated seed potentials with a composition of Ehlers and Harrison transformations. In particular, assigning an additional “electric” or “magnetic” tag to the transformations, we investigate the new spacetimes obtained either via a composition of magnetic Ehlers and Harrison transformations (first part) or via a magnetic-electric combination (second part). In the first part, the resulting type D spacetime, dubbed electromagnetic swirling universe, features key properties, separately found in swirling and (Bonnor–)Melvin spacetimes, the latter recovered in appropriate limits. A detailed analysis of the geometry is included, and subtle issues are addressed. A detailed proof that the spacetime belongs to the Kundt family, is included, and a notable relation to the5 planar-Reissner–Nordström-NUT black hole is also meticulously worked out. This relation is further exploited to reverse-engineer the form of the solution in the presence of a nontrivial cosmological constant. A Schwarzschild black hole embedded into the new background is also discussed. In the second part, we present four novel stationary and axisymmetric asymptotically nonflat type I spacetimes, which are naively expected to be extensions of the Melvin or swirling solution including a NUT parameter or electromagnetic charges. We actually find that they are, under conditions, free of curvature and topological singularities, with the physical meaning of the electric transformation parameters in these backgrounds requiring further investigation.

Box 2208, Heraklion, 71003, Greece, Email z.kapsala@med.uoc.grIntroduction: We present a novel semi-automated computerized method for the detection and quantification of parafoveal capillary network (PCN) in fluorescein angiography (FA) images.Material and Methods: An algorithm detecting the superficial parafoveal capillary bed in high-resolution grayscale FA images and creating a one-pixel-wide PCN skeleton was developed using MatLab software. In addition to PCN detection, capillary density and branch point density in two circular areas centered on the center of the foveal avascular zone of 500μm and 750μm radius was calculated by the algorithm. Three consecutive FA images with distinguishable PCN from 56 eyes from 56 subjects were used for analysis. Both manual and semi-automated detection of the PCN and branch points was performed and compared. Three different intensity thresholds were used for the PCN detection to optimize the method defined as mean(I)+0.05*SD(I), mean(I) and mean(I)-0.05*SD(I), where I is the grayscale intensity of each image and SD the standard deviation. Limits of agreement (LoA), intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and Pearson’s correlation coefficient (r) were calculated.Results: Using mean(I)-0.05*SD(I) as threshold the average difference in PCN density between semi-automated and manual method was 0.197 (0.316) deg− 1 at 500μm radius and 0.409 (0.562) deg− 1 at 750μm radius. The LoA were − 0.421 to 0.817 and − 0.693 to 1.510 deg− 1, respectively. The average difference of branch point density between semi-automated and manual method was zero for both areas; LoA were − 0.001 to 0.002 and − 0.001 to 0.001 branch points/degrees2, respectively. The other two intensity thresholds provided wider LoA for both metrics. The semi-automated algorithm showed great repeatability (ICC> 0.91 in the 500μm radius and ICC> 0.84 in the 750μm radius) for both metrics.Conclusion: This semi-automated algorithm seems to provide readings in agreement with those of manual capillary tracing in FA. This paper introduces smart marine ecosystem-based planning (SMEP), a marine spatial planning (MSP) strategy for more participatory and responsive marine governance by leveraging “smart” digital services. SMEP denotes an iterative MSP process with planning cycles that incorporate continuous data gathering of spatial–temporal natural phenomena and human activities in coastal and marine areas, with ongoing data mining to locate key patterns and trends, to strive for periodic refinement of the MSP output. SMEP aims to adopt an ecosystem-based approach, taking into account both living and nonliving aspects of the marine environment, and making use of all available spatial data at various resolutions. In pursuit of SMEP implementation, the paper examines the current state of the MSP process in Greece and relates its long-term success with the establishment of a marine spatial data infrastructure (MSDI), employing contemporary nautical cartography standards along with hydrospatial data services.

The WHO Global vision detection program and preventing blindness "VISION 2020: the right to Sight" has shown the need to identify the genetic predisposition to glaucoma. It provides new opportunities for diagnosis, early prevention and treatment. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of the rs1799983 polymorphism (G894T, Glu298Asp) of the NOS3 gene on the development of primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) in patients from the Ukrainian population. The study involved data from 153 patients (153 eyes) with POAG and 47 controls. The age of patients was 65.0±13.1 years. The duration of the disease was 4.9±5.3 years. The real-time polymerase chain reaction (Gene Amp® PCR system 7500 amplifier; USA) was performed in the patients “blood using the TaqMan Mutation Detection Assays Life-Technology test system (USA). The Statistica 10 program (StatSoft, Inc.) was used for statistical processing of the obtained results, USA). The significant increase in the frequency of the minor genotype TA and the T allele was found in POAG compared to the controls. The distribution of genotypes was not associated with the disease (p=0.051). While the effect of alleles was significant: for the T allele, OR=1.806; 95% VI 1.11-2.93 (p=0.016). Abstract In this work, we consider a specific shift-invariant quartic Horndeski model, deriving new planar black hole solutions with axionic hair. We explore these solutions in terms of their horizon structure and their thermodynamic properties. We use the gauge/gravity dictionary to derive the DC transport coefficients of the holographic dual with the aim of investigating how the new deformation affects the universality of some renown bound proposals. Although most of them are found to hold true, we nevertheless find a highly interesting parametric violation of the heat conductivity-to-temperature lower bound which acquires a dependence on both the scale and the coupling. Finally, using a perturbative approach, a more brutal violation of the viscocity-to-entropy ratio is demonstrated.

AIM: To evaluate the changes in higher order aberrations (HOAs) after implantable collamer lens (ICL; Staar Surgical, Nidau, Switzerland) implantation. METHODS: Totally 30 eyes of 18 patients with myopia were included in this study with an average age of 25.77y (min: 21, max: 40). Refraction, uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), HOAs (entire, corneal and internal) were evaluated preoperatively and three months postoperatively. Ocular aberrations were measured by using iTrace (Tracey Technology, Houston, Texas, USA). SPSS (IBM Corp. Released 2013. IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 22.0. Armonk, NY: IBM Corp) was used for the statistical analysis and the interpretation of the data. P values of less than 0.05 were considered statistically significant. RESULTS: The preoperative mean spherical power was -9.01 D (min: -5.00, max: -13.00) and the mean cylindrical error was -2.40 D (min: -0.50, max: -4.75). The postoperative mean residual spherical power was -0.73 D (min: -0.20, max: -1.75) and the mean cylindrical error was -0.89 D (min: -0.18, max: -2.09). Analyses were made on root mean square (RMS) values of total HOAs (tHOAs), spherical aberration, coma and trefoil as entire, corneal and internal components. The differences in entire tHOAs and in internal tHOAs were significant. There was no significant change found in spherical aberrations. The differences in entire coma and in internal coma were significant. There was no significant change found in corneal coma. With respect to trefoil, the only significant difference was in internal trefoil. CONCLUSION: The ICL implantation corrects the refractive error successfully and changes entire and internal HOAs of the eye.

A 36-year-old male underwent uneventful small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) for the correction of his high residual refractive error 12 years after photorefractive keratectomy (PRK). Preoperatively, uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) was counting fingers in both eyes. Corrected distance visual acuity was 20/20 in the right and 20/30 in the left eye due to amblyopia. One month after SMILE, UDVA was 20/20 and 20/30 in the right and left eye, respectively; post-PRK corneal haze had reduced. During the 4-year follow-up, UDVA remained stable and there were no complications. SMILE could be a good alternative approach for retreatment in post-PRK patient.

Purpose: To investigate in vitro the accuracy of dynamic contour tonometry, Goldmann applanation tonometry, and Tono-Pen XL in edematous corneas. Methods: Experimental study included 20 freshly enucleated porcine eyes. Epithelium was debrided, and eyes were divided in four groups. Groups were immersed in 35%, 40%, 50%, and 60% glycerin solutions for 3 hours. Subsequently, globes were mounted in a special holder, and their intraocular pressure was hydrostatically adjusted. Intraocular pressure was measured by means of dynamic contour tonometry, Goldmann applanation tonometry, and Tono-Pen XL while adjusting true intraocular pressure to 17, 33, and 50 mm Hg. Ultrasound pachymetry was performed. Results: Mean corneal thickness was 914.5 ± 33.3 μm (730–1015 μm). Most of the high-order aberrations of the eye are not circularly symmetric. Hence, while it is well known that human vision is subject to cortically based orientation preference in cell tuning, the optics of the eye might also introduce some orientational anisotropy. We tested this idea by measuring contrast sensitivity at different orientations of sine-wave gratings when viewing through a closed-loop adaptive optics phoropter. Under aberration-corrected conditions, mean contrast sensitivity improved for all observers by a factor of 1.8× to 5×. The detectability of some orientations improved more than others. As expected, this orientation-specific effect varied between individuals. The sensitivity benefits were accurately predicted from MTF model simulations, demonstrating that the observed effects reflected the individual's pattern of high-order aberrations. In one observer, the orientation-specific effects were substantial: an improvement of 8× at one orientation and 2× in another orientation. The experiments confirm that, for conditions that are not diffraction limited, the optics of the eye introduce rotational asymmetry to the luminance distribution on the retina and that this impacts vision, inducing orientational anisotropy. These results suggest that the traditional view of meridional anisotropy having an entirely neural origin may be true for diffraction-limited pupils but that viewing through larger pupils introduces an additional orientation-specific optical component to this phenomenon.

Ioannis G Pallikaris, Nela R Stojanovic, Harilaos S Ginis Institute of Vision and Optics, Department of Medicine, University of Crete, Heraklion, Crete, Greece Purpose: The aim of this study is to demonstrate the functionality of a new design of a thick endocapsular open ring for prevention of anterior capsule opacification (ACO) and posterior capsule opacification (PCO). Setting: The Institute of Vision and Optics, University of Crete and University Hospital of Heraklion, Crete, Greece. Design: Prospective, interventional pilot study. Methods: Fifteen patients (17 eyes) underwent cataract surgery with phacoemulsification. During surgery, a thick endocapsular open ring (peripheral capsule reconstructor) was inserted into the capsular bag, prior to intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. Six different models of IOL were implanted. Postoperatively, the degree of ACO and PCO was evaluated and described as none, mild, moderate, or severe. Results: The mean follow-up period was 30±8.06 months (range: 12–36 months). At the last follow-up, mild PCO was observed in only three eyes and mild ACO in three patients. The centration of IOLs was good in all but one eye, which had a tilted IOL. Conclusion: The results of this pilot study suggest that the implantation of a new design of thick endocapsular open ring is feasible and may contribute to the prevention of PCO and ACO after cataract surgery. Marine spatial “open” data infrastructures (MSDI) have a significant economic and societal potential for coastal nations and their realization is driven by the evolution of the International Hydrographic Organization’s (IHO) S-100 data model for facilitating marine domain interoperability and the World Wide Web Consortium’s (W3C) best practices for spatial data publishing on the Web. The recent European directive on open data and the re-use of public sector information, known as the “Open Data Directive” is a key driver towards the establishment of “open” MSDIs among other spatial data infrastructures. The paper discusses possible data architectures for the MSDIs, examines the maturity of open data platforms that they could be built upon and compares the most prominent marine spatial data models for their applicability in relation to three marine information domains. MSDIs can facilitate the continuous data capturing of spatial-temporal physical phenomena and human activities at sea and coastal areas, the corresponding data analysis and the decision-making for achieving continual improvement in the marine planning and management processes. MSDIs could play a key role in digital government transformation (DGT) for effective data sharing and offering marine services across various stakeholders. The information provided through a MSDI can be used for safe and efficient operation of maritime traffic, exploration and exploitation of marine resources, marine spatial planning (MSP), integrated coastal zone management (ICZM), environmental protection, and naval and maritime security.

Purpose: The primary objective of the study was to explore the statistics of ocular higher-order aberrations in a population of primary and secondary school children. Methods: A sample of 557 children aged 10–15 years were selected from two primary and two secondary schools in Heraklion, Greece. Children were classified by age in three subgroups: group I (10.7 ± 0.5 years), group II (12.4 ± 0.5 years) and group III (14.5 ± 0.5 years). Ocular aberrations were measured using a wavefront aberrometer (COAS, AMO Wavefront Sciences, USA) at mesopic light levels (illuminance at cornea was 4 lux). Wavefront analysis was achieved for a 5 mm pupil. Statistical analysis was carried out for the right eye only. Results: The average coefficient of most high-order aberrations did not differ from zero with the exception of vertical (0.076 μm) and horizontal (0.018 μm) coma, oblique trefoil (−0.055 μm) and spherical aberration (0.018 μm). The most prominent change between the three groups was observed for the spherical aberration, which increased from 0.007 μm (SE 0.005) in group I to 0.011 μm (SE 0.004) in group II and 0.030 μm (SE 0.004) in group III. Significant differences were also found for the oblique astigmatism and the third-order coma aberrations. Conclusions: Differences in the low levels of ocular spherical aberration in young children possibly reflect differences in lenticular spherical aberration and relate to the gradient refractive index of the lens. The evaluation of spherical aberration at certain stages of eye growth may help to better understand the underlying mechanisms of myopia development.

Alexandra E Karavitaki, Ioannis G Pallikaris, Sophia I Panagopoulou, George A Kounis, George Kontadakis, George D KymionisInstitute of Vision and Optics, University of Crete, Crete, GreecePurpose: Our purpose was to evaluate the long-term visual outcomes after bilateral implantation of Crystalens® HD (Bausch and Lomb, Inc.) accommodative intraocular lenses.Methods: In this study, 25 patients (50 eyes) who underwent cataract surgery and bilateral Crystalens HD accommodative intraocular lens implantation were included. The Crystalens HD lens was implanted in the bag in both eyes, without any intra- or postoperative complications. The visual parameters measured before and after surgery were: uncorrected distance visual acuity, corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) (using the Early Diabetic Retinopathy Study [EDTRS] logMAR charts), uncorrected intermediate visual acuity, and uncorrected near visual acuity using a Birkhäuser reading chart, at a distance of 66 cm and 33 cm for intermediate and near vision, respectively, directly illuminated by a lamp of 60 watts. After surgery, the patients were evaluated at 1, 3, 6, 12, 24, and 36 months.Results: The mean age was 68.70±7.1 (range: 54 to 83) years. The mean follow-up was 42.72±0.49 (range: 42.33 to 43.27) months. The uncorrected distance visual acuity improved from 0.56±0.41 (range: 0 to 2) preoperatively to 0.19±0.13 (range: 0 to 0.38) (logMAR scale) at the last follow-up visit, and the CDVA improved from 0.17±0.18 (range: 0 to 0.7) preoperatively to 0.05±0.05 (range: −0.02 to 0.22) at the last follow-up visit. No eyes lost lines of CDVA during the follow-up period, while 54% of patients gained one or more lines of CDVA. The uncorrected intermediate and near visual acuity was J2 or better in 71% and 69% of our patients, respectively.Conclusion: Crystalens HD implantation seems to provide an improvement in visual acuity for far, intermediate, and near distances.Keywords: presbyopia, accommodation
