Hematologic toxicity is a common side effect of multimodal cancer therapy. Nearly all animal studies investigating the causes of radiotherapy-induced hematologic toxicity use inbred strains with limited genetic diversity and do not reflect the diverse responses observed in humans. We used the population-based Collaborative Cross (CC) mouse resource to investigate the genetic architecture of the acute and persistent immune response after radiation exposure by measuring 22 immune parameters in 1,720 CC mice representing 35 strains. We determined relative acute and persistent radiation resistance scores at the individual strain level considering contributions from all immune parameters. Genome-wide association analysis identified quantitative trait loci associated with baseline and radiation responses. A cross-species radiation resistance score predicted recurrence-free survival in medulloblastoma patients. We present a community resource of immune parameters and genome-wide association analyses before and after radiation exposure for future investigations of the contributions of host genetics on radiosensitivity.

- Abstract
The concept of 'pedagogic voice' emphasises the capacity of children to express their views on matters related to teaching, learning and curriculum. 'Pedagogic voice' aligns with children's rights to be listened to and the extent to which their views are fully considered and acted upon. Combined, these rights based approaches positively shape children's learning experiences. This paper draws on quantitative and qualitative data from the longitudinal mixed methods cohort study Children's School Lives to explore children's voice. Grounded in the sociology of pedagogic voice literature and building upon research on children's participatory rights, the paper explores children's experiences of being heard and actively participating in decision-making processes in diverse primary school settings in Ireland. It analyses children's voice by looking at their capacity to influence their own learning, contrasting their experiences and perspectives, to those of their teachers. Findings illustrate the interplay between children's and teachers' narratives regarding children's voice and their pedagogical encounters to explore the impact on teaching and learning processes, highlighting structural challenges to the realisation of children's voice in primary classrooms in Ireland.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a well-known autoimmune inflammatory disease that affects the diarthrodial joints. Inflammation increases the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which may explain why RA is one of the diseases that induce oxidative stress. This study aimed to evaluate the potential differences in biochemical, hematological, and oxidative stress markers in the early stages of RA and after different treatment regimens. The study involved 111 patients, 28 men and 83 women aged 34 to 59 years, who were divided based on their c-reactive protein (CRP) levels into inactive RA patients (IRA) with CRP < 1.3 (n = 57, 22 men and 35 women) and active RA patients (ARA) with CRP ≥ 1.3 (n = 54, 6 men and 48 women). The study participants were divided into two groups, A and B, based on their treatment regimen. Group A, 90% of which were IRA patients, received methotrexate (MTX) monotherapy. Group B, which comprised 90% ARA patients, received a combination of leflunomide, a conventional disease-modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD), and a biologic DMARD. The hematological, biochemical, oxidative stress, and RA-specific biomarkers were measured twice in groups A and B in the early stage of the disease, before and 3 months post-treatment, using conventional colorimetric, fluorometric, and immunological assays. According to the results of our study, glutathione peroxidase (GPx), ROS, calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) ions, vitamin C and D, and lipid profiles could serve as potential diagnostic markers in the early stages of the disease. Both treatment options were equally effective at improving the overall health of the patients. However, treatment resulted in a further increase in ROS levels and a decrease in antioxidant markers.

Background: Menopause has a significant impact on the endocrine system of middle-aged women, resulting in a loss of skeletal muscle mass (SMM), changes in fat mass (FM) and a reduction in strength capacity. Resistance training (RT) and a high-protein diet (HPD) are effective methods for maintaining or increasing SMM. This study aims to determine the effects of HPD and RT on body composition, muscle thickness and strength capacity in postmenopausal women. Methods: In total 55 healthy postmenopausal women (age: 58.2 ± 5.6 years, weight 69.1 ± 9.6 kg, height 166.5 ± 6.5 cm) successfully participated in the study. The women were randomly assigned to either group: training + protein (2.5 g/kg fat-free mass (FFM)) (n = 15; TP); only training (n = 12; T); only protein (2.5 g/kg FFM) (n = 14; CP) or control (n = 14; C). TP and T performed RT for 12 weeks with three training sessions and five exercises each. CP and C were prohibited from training during the period. The main parameters analysed for body composition were FFM, SMM, FM, muscle thickness of the M. rectus femoris, M. biceps femoris, M. triceps brachii and M. biceps brachii muscles. Strength was tested using a dynamometer for grip strength and 1-RM in the squat (BBS) and deadlift (DL). Results: The SMM significantly increased by RT (TP: (Δ+1.4 ± 0.9 kg; p < 0.05; d = 0.4; T: Δ+1.2 ± 1.3kg; p < 0.05; d = 0.3) and FM could be reduced only in T: (Δ−2.4 ± 2.9 kg; p < 0.05; d = 0.3). In muscle thickness a significant increase in the M. biceps brachii in both training groups (TP: (Δ+0.4 ± 0.3 cm; p < 0.05; d = 1.6; T: (Δ+0.3 ± 0.3 cm; p < 0.05; d = 0.9) and in M. biceps femoris only in TP (Δ+0.3 ± 0.4 cm; p < 0.05; d = 0.9) were observed. HPD without training does not affect body composition, A significant increase in grip strength (TP: Δ+4.7 ± 2.4 kg; (p < 0.05; d = 1.5; T: (Δ+3.6 ± 3.0 kg; p < 0.05; d = 0.8), in BBS (TP: (Δ+30.0 ± 14.2 kg; p < 0.05; d = 1.5; T: (Δ+34.0 ± 12.0 kg; p < 0.05; d = 2.4) and in DL (TP: (Δ+20.8 ± 10.3 kg; p < 0.05; d = 1.6; T: (Δ+22.1 ± 7.6 kg; p < 0.05; d = 2.0) was observed in both training groups. The CP also recorded a significant increase in the BBS (Δ+7.5 ± 5.4 kg; p < 0.05; d = 0.4) and in DL (Δ+5.5 ± 7.7 kg; p < 0.05; d = 0.5). No significant differences were detected for TP and T for any of the parameters. Conclusion: The results indicate that RT enhances body composition and strength capacity in postmenopausal women and is a preventive strategy against muscle atrophy. Besides HPD without training has a trivial significant effect on BBS and DL. HPD with RT has no clear additive effect on body composition and strength capacity. Further studies are needed to confirm these observations.

IntroductionNew onset refractory status epilepticus (NORSE) is a rare and devastating condition characterised by the sudden onset of refractory status epilepticus (RSE) without an identifiable acute or active structural, toxic, or metabolic cause in an individual without a pre-existing diagnosis of epilepsy. Febrile infection-related epilepsy syndrome (FIRES) is considered a subcategory of NORSE and presents following a febrile illness prior to seizure onset. NORSE/FIRES is associated with high morbidity and mortality in children and adults. Methods and resultsIn this review we first briefly summarise the reported clinical, paraclinical, treatment and outcome data in the literature. We then report on existing knowledge of the underlying pathophysiology in relation to in vitro and in vivo pre-clinical seizure and epilepsy models of potential relevance to NORSE/FIRES.DiscussionWe highlight how pre-clinical models can enhance our understanding of FIRES/NORSE and propose future directions for research.

Abstract The present study examined the role of age and sex in the outcomes of non-surgical periodontal therapy (NSPT). De-identified demographic and periodontal characteristics of patients who presented for baseline periodontal evaluation, NSPT, and periodontal re-evaluation were abstracted from electronic health records. Independent associations of age and sex with severe periodontitis defined as ≥ 5 mm clinical attachment loss (CAL) and ≥ 6 mm probing depth (PD) were determined using multinomial logistic regression. The null hypothesis was rejected at α

Science - Abstract
Abstract Visual systems are homogeneous structures, where repeating columnar units retinotopically cover the visual field. Each of these columns contain many of the same neuron types that are distinguished by anatomic, genetic and – generally – by functional properties. However, there are exceptions to this rule. In the 800 columns of the Drosophila eye, there is an anatomically and genetically identifiable cell type with variable functional properties, Tm9. Since anatomical connectivity shapes functional neuronal properties, we identified the presynaptic inputs of several hundred Tm9s across both optic lobes using the full adult female fly brain (FAFB) electron microscopic dataset and FlyWire connectome. Our work shows that Tm9 has three major and many sparsely distributed inputs. This differs from the presynaptic connectivity of other Tm neurons, which have only one major, and more stereotypic inputs than Tm9. Genetic synapse labeling showed that the heterogeneous wiring exists across individuals. Together, our data argue that the visual system uses heterogeneous, distributed circuit properties to achieve robust visual processing.

In this paper, a novel discrete algebra is presented which follows by combining the SU(2) Lie-Poisson bracket with the discrete Frenet equation. Physically, the construction describes a discrete piecewise linear string in R3. The starting point of our derivation is the discrete Frenet frame assigned at each vertix of the string. Then the link vector that connect the neighbouring vertices assigns the SU(2) Lie-Poisson bracket. Moreover, the same bracket defines the transfer matrices of the discrete Frenet equation which relates two neighbouring frames along the string. The procedure extends in a self-similar manner to an infinite hierarchy of Poisson structures. As an example, the first descendant of the SU(2) Lie-Poisson structure is presented in detail. For this, the spinor representation of the discrete Frenet equation is employed, as it converts the brackets into a computationally more manageable form. The final result is a nonlinear, nontrivial and novel Poisson structure that engages four neighbouring vertices., Comment: Extented abstract and extra references, To appear in Physical Review D

A network of three radon stations has been established in the Langadas Basin, northern Greece for radon monitoring by various techniques in earthquake prediction studies. Specially made devices with plastic tubes including Alpha Tracketch Detectors (ATD) were installed for registering alpha particles from radon and radon decay products exhaled from the ground, every 2 weeks, by using LR-115, type II, non-strippable Kodak films, starting from December 1996. Simultaneous measurements started using Lucas cells alpha spectrometer for instantaneous radon measurements in soil gas, before and after setting ATDs at the radon stations. Continuous monitoring of radon gas exhaling from the ground started from the middle of August 1999 by using silicon diode detectors, which simultaneously register meteorological parameters, such as rainfall, temperature and barometric pressure. The obtained data were studied together with the data of seismic events, such as the magnitude, ML, of earthquakes that occurred at the Langadas Basin during the period of measurements, as registered by the Laboratory of Geophysics, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, in order to find out any association between them.

Ion specificity and related Hofmeister effects, ubiquitous in aqueous systems, can have spectacular consequences in hydrated clays, where ion-specific nanoscale surface forces can determine large scale cohesive, swelling and shrinkage behaviors of soil and sediments. We have used a semi-atomistic computational approach and examined sodium, calcium and aluminum counterions confined with water between charged surfaces representative of clay materials, to show that ion-water structuring in nanoscale confinement is at the origin of surface forces between clay particles which are intrinsically ion-specific. When charged surfaces strongly confine ions and water, the amplitude and oscillations of the net pressure naturally emerge from the interplay of electrostatics and steric effects, which can not be captured by existing theories. Increasing confinement and surface charge densities promote ion-water structures that increasingly deviate from the ions' bulk hydration shells, being strongly anisotropic and persistent, and self-organizing into optimized, nearly solid-like assemblies where hardly any free water is left. In these conditions, strongly attractive interactions can prevail between charged surfaces, due to the dramatically reduced dielectric screening of water and the highly organized water-ion structures. By unravelling the ion-specific nature of these nanoscale interactions, we provide evidence that ion-specific solvation structures determined by confinement are at the origin of ion specificity in clays and potentially a broader range of confined aqueous systems., Comment: Main text: 14 pages and 6 figures. The study aimed to compare the physicochemical composition, fatty acid profile, phenolic content and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of feta cheese produced in two regions in Greece (mountainous grasslands and plains). The VOC profiles of forage in the mountainous grasslands were also investigated in order to detect any relationship between the two profiles. Forbs were found to be the major functional group in the mountainous area and the most abundant VOCs were aldehydes, alcohols, and terpenes. Significant variations were observed between the main compositional features of the two types of cheeses, with the cheese produced from the milk of ewes and goats grazing in the mountainous region having a higher moisture content, lower fat content, and higher protein content. A total of 34 VOCs were identified and the most abundant groups in the cheese samples were esters, hydrocarbons, and alcohols. The fatty acid profile, phenolic content, and terpene profile of the cheese were also affected by the type of pasture. The cheese produced from the milk of ewes and goats grazing in the mountainous region also had a higher content of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and a lower content of saturated fatty acids (SFAs). These findings suggest that the grasslands grazed by ewes and goats in the mountainous region have a positive impact on the nutritional quality of feta cheese.

- Abstract
Background: The paper discusses how the design of summative assessments of practical science can be enhanced through the use of robust theoretical models that capture the diversity of scientific methods. The developments in assessment policy in England and the role of practical science in teaching and learning of science are reviewed. Purpose: The paper has two main purposes: (a) to explore how summative assessments of practical science can potentially reflect the breadth of scientific methods; and (b) to investigate how Year 10 students in England engage with and perceive summative assessments designed using Brandon's Matrix, a framework clarifying the diversity of scientific methods. Sample: The paper draws on data from Year 10 (14-15 years old) students with a sample of physics assessment tasks developed using Brandon's Matrix. Design and methods: The study focused on the development of a series of assessment questions based on Brandon's Matrix, a framework by a philosopher of science, who classifies scientific methods in a taxonomy. Students' performance on the assessments as well as their perceptions about practical science are investigated. Conclusion: The results suggest that students held a very narrow understanding of what a scientific method is and often linked it to hypothesis testing, variable manipulation and measurement of several variables. Furthermore, they reported not to enjoy drawing conclusions from data.

Research indicates that teachers lack a sophisticated understanding of Nature of Science (NOS), which in turn, can impact their instructional decisions and students' understanding of NOS. The aim of the study was to investigate United Arab Emirates (UAE) early years' science teacher's (N = 433) perceptions about the NOS. Results obtained from a 70-item questionnaire revealed that teachers have an adequate understanding on many aspects related to science and NOS, especially those pertaining to the 'Social-Institutional', 'Scientific Practices' and 'Educational Applications' categories. However, varied perceptions were found on some key concepts such as the role of bias and prejudices on scientific facts, the employment of same scientific practices across different branches of science, and the influence of politics in science. Misconceptions on particular aspects of NOS were also recognised (e.g. the distinction between laws and theories and the fixed nature of procedures followed in experiments). The findings suggest practical and pedagogical implications for teaching and outline an agenda for further research.

Cement is one of the most produced materials in the world. A major player in greenhouse gas emissions, it is the main binding agent in concrete, to which it provides a cohesive strength that rapidly increases during setting. Understanding how such cohesion emerges has been a major obstacle to advances in cement science and technology. Here, we combine computational statistical mechanics and theory to demonstrate how cement cohesion results from the organization of interlocked ions and water, progressively confined in nano-slits between charged surfaces of Calcium-Silicate-Hydrates. Due to the water/ions interlocking, dielectric screening is drastically reduced and ionic correlations are proven significantly stronger than previously thought, dictating the evolution of the nano-scale interactions during cement hydration. By developing a quantitative analytical prediction of cement cohesion based on Coulombic forces, we reconcile a novel fundamental understanding of cement hydration with the fully atomistic description of the solid cement paste and open new paths for science and technologies of construction materials.

Lilium chalcedonicum L., a bulbous perennial endemic to the Balkans, is recognized for its considerable ornamental potential. In this study, seeds were gathered from a wild population and subjected to surface disinfection. Subsequently, they were placed in Petri dishes containing a half-strength Murashige and Skoog (MS) nutrient substrate (MS/2), with temperature conditions at 15 °C and 20 °C, followed by cycles of 5 °C and return to 15 °C and 20 °C, respectively. The in vitro-cultivated seedlings were then transplanted for further growth in MS medium enriched with either 30 g L-1 or 60 g L-1 sucrose and 0.1 mg L-1 6-N-benzyladenine (BA). In the following stage, the resulting bulblets were separated and cultivated in MS/2, either without hormones (Hf) or with BA at concentrations of 0.2 mg L-1, 0.5 mg L-1, or 1 mg L-1. Moreover, the combined influence of 1-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) at a concentration of 1.0 mg L-1 and 0.2 mg L-1 BA was examined. This stage was succeeded by a further division of the bulblets, and the explants were cultured in Hf, MS/2 or with the inclusion of 0.5 mg L-1 BA or a combination of BA and NAA at ratios of 0.2/1 and 0.5/0.05 mg L-1; zeatin at 0.5 mg L-1 was also used, combined with 0.05 mg L-1 NAA. Notably, all seeds exhibited a 100% germination rate following alternating temperature regimes including periods of low temperature. During the initial cultivation phase, each seedling gave rise to two bulblets measuring 0.6 cm in diameter. Subsequent subcultures on Hf substrates and those containing BA without NAA, resulted in the highest number of bulblets (1.6-2.2 bulbs/plant) of the largest diameter (0.8-0.9 cm). Particularly noteworthy was the substantial increase in the average number of produced bulblets during the subsequent subcultures (multiplication stage), where 16.9 bulbs were formed in MS/2 medium containing 0.5 mg L-1 BA, with a median diameter of 1.7 cm.

Abstract Background The 2014 estimates of prevalence of food allergy (FA) in Europe published by the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology included only the eight so‐called big foods (cow's milk/egg/wheat/soy/peanut/tree nuts/fish/shellfish). Those estimates have recently been updated. Complementing this, we sought to identify and estimate the prevalence of allergy to other foods that have been reported during the last decade. Methods Six databases were searched for studies published 2012–2021. Random‐effects meta‐analysis was performed to derive pooled prevalence of allergy to each food. Results Twenty‐seven studies were included, containing a total of 66 FAs. Among the most frequently reported FAs, the lifetime and point prevalence range of self‐reported kiwi allergy was 0.1%–1.0% and 0.2%–8.1%, respectively, while the food challenge (FC)‐verified kiwi allergy point prevalence range was 0.01%–0.10%. The point prevalence range for self‐reported peach allergy was 0.2%–3.2%, while the range for FC‐verified peach allergy was 0.02%–0.05%. The lifetime and point prevalence range for self‐reported tomato allergy was 0.01%–1.8% and 0.2%–2.1%, respectively. Conclusion Allergy to some foods traditionally not considered important are now emerging as relevant FAs. The focus on FA in Europe should not be limited to the so‐called eight big FA, but extended to other types of foods which need to be considered both for clinical purposes and population risk assessment.
