The growing volume of plastics derived from electronic waste (e-waste) underscores the imperative for environmentally sustainable strategies for the management of this waste. In light of the paramount importance of this issue, a pilot demonstrator for the decontamination of polymers containing Brominated Flame Retardants (BFRs) has been developed. The objective is to investigate the potential for decontaminating BFR-containing polymers from e-waste via UV-visible irradiation using a rotatory laboratory pilot operating under primary vacuum conditions. This report focuses on binary model blends composed of 90 weight% (wt%) poly(Acrylo-Butadiene-Styrene) (ABS) pellets and 10 wt% Deca-Bromo-Diphenyl Ether (DBDE), which is one of the most toxic BFRs. The efficiency of the irradiation process was evaluated as a function of pellet diameter and irradiation time using Fourier Transform InfraRed spectroscopy (FTIR) and High-Resolution Laser Desorption/Ionization Mass Spectroscopy (HR-LDI-MS). As a consequence, ABS + DBDE achieved a decontamination efficiency of 97% when irradiated with pellets of less than 1 mm in diameter for a period of 4 h. Additionally, the thermal behavior of the irradiated samples was investigated through thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. It was thus established that the application of UV-visible irradiation had no significant impact on the overall thermal properties of ABS.

Selective emitter solar cells can provide a significant increase in conversion efficiency. However current approaches need many technological steps and alignment procedures. This paper reports on a preliminary attempt to reduce the number of processing steps and therefore the cost of selective emitter cells. In the developed procedure, a phosphorous glass covered with silicon nitride acts as the doping source. A laser is used to open locally the antireflection coating and at the same time achieve local phosphorus diffusion. In this process the standard chemical etching of the phosphorous glass is avoided. Sheet resistance variation from 100 Ω/sq to 40 Ω/sq is demonstrated with a nanosecond UV laser. Numerical simulation of the laser-matter interaction is discussed to understand the dopant diffusion efficiency. Preliminary solar cells results show a 0.5% improvement compared with a homogeneous emitter structure.

COVID-19 is a viral disease caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The pathogenesis of SARS-CoV-2 infection in humans manifests as mild symptoms to severe respiratory failure. The development of vaccines against coronaviruses faces several inherent challenges in its establishment as safe and effective, but also in production and distribution. Therefore, supportive treatments are more achievable in a short period of time in controlling the pandemic. Treatment is mainly based on controlling symptoms and inhibiting viral replication. Antivirals are more effective the earlier they are administered during the course of the disease, preferably starting from the first days of evolution; the benefit/risk ratio is the higher the patient has a higher risk of severe evolution. That is why antivirals are primarily administered to patients with nonsevere forms of the disease who have risk factors for severe evolution. Immunomodulatory drugs enhance the immune response against pathogens and may offer a therapeutic approach to treatment of viral diseases, having a significant prophylactic activity in the acute respiratory viral infection. There is a strong scientific rationale which suggest that viral diseases respond to immunomodulatory drugs. People protected with antivirals, immunomodulatory drugs or vaccines often have the disease in a milder or asymptomatic form. In Romania, the latest treatment protocol for COVID-19 includes immunomodulatory, antiviral and anti-inflammatory medication.

Bloom syndrome is an exceptionally rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by a considerable genomic instability due to the defective DNA damage repair machine. It is caused by biallelic pathogenic variants in the gene encoding for one of the five human RecQ helicases, RECQL3/BLM. The disorder manifests clinically as growth deficiency, skin anomalies, immunodeficiencies, insulin resistance, and a high predisposition to cancers. Less than 300 patients have been reported so far. In this paper, we report on the first Romanian patient of bi-ethnic origin, molecularly diagnosed with Bloom syndrome. As the most severe complications of the disorder are the malignancies, developing even in childhood, an early diagnosis is essential for further surveillance and therapeutic approach of Bloom patients.

Access to medicines is a fundamental human right and is a vital element of health care. Over the last 10 years, there has been a tendency for the global discontinuation of drug supply to become a major problem, with an increasing exacerbation of this phenomenon in the European Union, with a potential negative impact on patient health care due to multiple causes (manufacturing problems, drug pricing policy, parallel export etc.). National Agency for Medicines and Medical Devices of Romania (NAMMDR) argues, in full agreement with European Medicines Agency, that in this situation effective collaboration between the various stakeholders and regulators is required, and also a good communication between manufacturers, distributors and authorities. It is a point of view that NAMMDR supported in the working meetings with the representatives of the marketing authorization holders/ manufacturers, wholesale distribution, patient associations. According to pharmacists, situations have been reported in which patients tend to stock up on medicines, and this puts additional pressure on existing stocks. In this work, we intended to draw attention to the medicine shortages issue which has a huge impact on national health systems, on patients′ safety, on public health and healthcare professionals.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) arises through a combination of genetic and epigenetic alterations that affect key pathways involved in tumor growth and progression. This review examines the major molecular pathways driving CRC, including Chromosomal Instability (CIN), Microsatellite Instability (MSI), and the CpG Island Methylator Phenotype (CIMP). Key mutations in genes such as APC, KRAS, NRAS, BRAF, and TP53 activate signaling pathways like Wnt, EGFR, and PI3K/AKT, contributing to tumorigenesis and influencing responses to targeted therapies. Resistance mechanisms, including mutations that bypass drug action, remain challenging in CRC treatment. This review highlights the role of molecular profiling in guiding the use of targeted therapies such as tyrosine kinase inhibitors and immune checkpoint inhibitors. Novel combination treatments are also discussed as strategies to improve outcomes and overcome resistance. In order to protect human health and the environment, several regulations have been introduced in recent years to reduce or even eliminate the use of some brominated flame retardants (BFRs) due to their toxicity, persistence and bioaccumulation. Dispersions of these BFRs in polymers are widely used for various applications. In this report, four different brominated molecules, decabromodiphenyl ether (DBDE), hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD), decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) and tris(tribromophenoxy)triazine (TTBPT), were dispersed in the solid matrix of an industrial polymer, high impact polystyrene (HIPS). The possibility of degradation of these BFRs within HIPS under UV–visible irradiation in ambient air was investigated. The degradation kinetics of DBDE and HBCDD were followed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and high-resolution two-step laser mass spectrometry (L2MS). The thermal properties of the pristine and irradiated polymer matrix were monitored by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), which showed that these properties were globally preserved. Volatile photoproducts from the degradation of DBDE, DBDPE and TTBPT were identified by headspace gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis. Under the chosen experimental conditions, BFRs underwent rapid degradation after a few seconds of irradiation, with conversions exceeding 50% for HIPS/DBDE and HIPS/HBCDD systems. Electron Beam (EB) irradiation was utilized to decontaminate model systems of industrial polymers that contain a brominated flame retardant (BFR). Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) and Polycarbonate (PC) are two types of polymers commonly found in Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE). In this study, these polymers were exposed to EB irradiation to degrade DecaBromoDiphenylEther (DBDE), one of the most toxic BFRs. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy analysis demonstrated an 87% degradation rate of DBDE for the ABS-DBDE system and 91% for the PC-DBDE system following an 1800 kGy irradiation dose. Thermal analysis using Differential Scanning Calorimetry revealed the presence of crosslinking in ABS and a minor reduction in the glass transition temperature of PC after EB processing. Polymers exhibited thermal stability after photolysis, as indicated by thermogravimetric analysis. In summary, EB irradiation had no impact on the overall thermal properties of both polymers. High-resolution mass spectrometry analysis has confirmed the debromination of both ABS-DBDE and PC-DBDE systems. Therefore, the results obtained are promising and could offer an alternative approach for removing bromine and other additives from plastic E-waste.

Generally, NSAIDs are weakly soluble in water and contain both hydrophilic and hydrophobic groups. One of the most widely used NSAIDs is ibuprofen, which has a poor solubility and high permeability profile. By creating dynamic, non-covalent, water-soluble inclusion complexes, cyclodextrins (CDs) can increase the dissolution rate of low aqueous solubility drugs, operating as a drug delivery vehicle, additionally contributing significantly to the chemical stability of pharmaceuticals and to reducing drug-related irritability. In order to improve the pharmacological and pharmacokinetics profile of ibuprofen, new thiazolidin-4-one derivatives of ibuprofen (4b, 4g, 4k, 4m) were complexed with β-CD, using co-precipitation and freeze-drying. The new β-CD complexes (β-CD-4b, β-CD-4g, β-CD-4k, β-CD-4m) were characterized using scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction and a phase solubility test. Using the AutoDock-VINA algorithm included in YASARA-structure software, we investigated the binding conformation of ibuprofen derivatives to β-CD and measured the binding energies. We also performed an in vivo biological evaluation of the ibuprofen derivatives and corresponding β-CD complexes, using analgesic/anti-inflammatory assays, as well as a release profile. The results support the theory that β-CD complexes (β-CD-4b, β-CD-4g, β-CD-4k, β-CD-4m) have a similar effect to ibuprofen derivatives (4b, 4g, 4k, 4m). Moreover, the β-CD complexes demonstrated a delayed release profile, which provides valuable insights into the drug-delivery area, focused on ibuprofen derivatives.

Abstract Secondary organic aerosols (SOA) are one of the main sources of uncertainty in the current understanding of the Earth’s climate. Agriculture contributes to primary aerosol emissions, but there is no estimate of SOA formation from gaseous precursors. Organic waste products such as sewage sludge are applied to cropland as fertilizers. In this work, we show that sewage sludge is an unaccounted source of nucleation precursors, such as skatole (C9H9N). Skatole emission and nucleation rates up to 1.1 × 106 cm−3 s−1 owing to ozone reactivity were measured in the laboratory. Our results show that SO2 plays a key role in the oxidation of skatole and leads to intensive new particle formation. The products of ozone reactions with skatole and the possible ozonolysis reaction mechanism are discussed. This nucleation mechanism might aid our understanding of the organic waste agricultural recycling contribution to the aerosol balance in the atmosphere. Based on the measured particle emission flux, the surface area of sewage sludge spread in France and the time before sewage sludge incorporation into the soil, a rough estimate of the annual quantity of particles generated by this agricultural activity is in the range of one ton, which represents ~0.03% of the total PM1.0 emissions from the agricultural and forestry sectors in France. As spreading occurs over only a few days (mid-summer), these emissions may locally be of great concern for local and regional air quality during this period of the year.

Chromosomal diseases are heterogeneous conditions with complex phenotypes, which include also epileptic seizures. Each chromosomal syndrome has a range of specific characteristics regarding the type of seizures, EEG findings and specific response to antiepileptic drugs, significant in the context of the respective genetic etiology. Therefore, it is very important to know these particularities, in order to avoid an exacerbation of seizures or some side effects. In this paper we will present a review of the epileptic seizures and antiepileptic treatment in some of the most common chromosomal syndromes.
