We report on the properties of SrTb2O4, a frustrated zigzag ladder antiferromagnet, studied by single crystal neutron diffraction (with polarised neutrons in zero field and unpolarised neutrons in an applied magnetic field), as well as by neutron spectroscopy on a polycrystalline sample. The neutron scattering results are supported by single crystal magnetisation and heat capacity measurements. In zero field, neutron diffraction data show no transition to a magnetically ordered state down to the lowest experimentally available temperature of 35 mK, and the material remains magnetically disordered down to this temperature. Polarised neutron diffraction measurements reveal the presence of a diffuse scattering signal suggesting only very weak spin-spin correlations in the ground state. For H // c (the easy magnetisation direction), we followed the magnetisation process using neutron diffraction measurements and observed the appearance of field-induced magnetic Bragg peaks with integer h and k indices in the (hk0) scattering plane. No magnetic peaks with a non-zero propagation vector were detected. The observed in-field data fit well to a simple two-sublattice model with magnetic moments aligned along the field direction but being significantly different in magnitude for the two inequivalent Tb3+ sites in the unit cell. We propose a new continuous video modeling framework based on implicit neural representations (INRs) called ActINR. At the core of our approach is the observation that INRs can be considered as a learnable dictionary, with the shapes of the basis functions governed by the weights of the INR, and their locations governed by the biases. Given compact non-linear activation functions, we hypothesize that an INR's biases are suitable to capture motion across images, and facilitate compact representations for video sequences. Using these observations, we design ActINR to share INR weights across frames of a video sequence, while using unique biases for each frame. We further model the biases as the output of a separate INR conditioned on time index to promote smoothness. By training the video INR and this bias INR together, we demonstrate unique capabilities, including $10\times$ video slow motion, $4\times$ spatial super resolution along with $2\times$ slow motion, denoising, and video inpainting. ActINR performs remarkably well across numerous video processing tasks (often achieving more than 6dB improvement), setting a new standard for continuous modeling of videos.

Thanks to work of Rouse, Sutherland, and Zureick-Brown, it is known exactly which subgroups of GL$_2(\mathbf{Z}_3)$ can occur as the image of the $3$-adic Galois representation attached to a non-CM elliptic curve over $\mathbf{Q}$, with a single exception: the normaliser of the non-split Cartan subgroup of level 27. In this paper, we complete the classification of 3-adic Galois images by showing that the normaliser of the non-split Cartan subgroup of level 27 cannot occur as a 3-adic Galois image of a non-CM elliptic curve. Our proof proceeds via computing the $\mathbf{Q}(\zeta_3)$-rational points on a certain smooth plane quartic curve $X'_H$ (arising as a quotient of the modular curve $X_{ns}^+(27)$) defined over $\mathbf{Q}(\zeta_3)$ whose Jacobian has Mordell--Weil rank 6. To this end, we describe how to carry out the quadratic Chabauty method for a modular curve $X$ defined over a number field $F$, which, when applicable, determines a finite subset of $X(F\otimes\mathbf{Q}_p)$ in certain situations of larger Mordell--Weil rank than previously considered. Together with an analysis of local heights above 3, we apply this quadratic Chabauty method to determine $X'_H(\mathbf{Q}(\zeta_3))$. This allows us to compute the set $X_{ns}^+(27)(\mathbf{Q})$, finishing the classification of 3-adic images of Galois.

Caro and Pasten gave an explicit upper bound on the number of rational points on a hyperbolic surface that is embedded in an abelian variety of rank at most one. We show how to use their method to produce a refined bound on the number of rational points on the surface $W_2 := C+C$ in the case of a hyperelliptic curve $C$ of genus $3$ over $\mathbb{Q}$. Combining this with work of Siksek, we use this to determine $W_2(\mathbb{Q})$ in a selection of examples.

Understanding the formation of skyrmions in centrosymmetric materials is a problem of fundamental and technological interest. GdRu2Si2 is one such candidate material which has been shown to host a variety of multi-Q magnetic structures, including in zero-field. Here, inelastic neutron scattering is used to measure the spin excitations in the field-polarized phase of GdRu2Si2. Linear spin wave theory and a method of interaction invariant path analysis are used to derive a Hamiltonian accounting for the observed spectra, and comparisons to \textit{ab initio} calculations are made. No evidence for anisotropic or higher order-exchange terms beyond bilinear Heisenberg exchange is found. This is discussed in the context of the multi-Q states existing at lower fields, for which these types of terms have previously been conceived to be significant in the formation of multi-Q ground states.

In this paper, we analyze the viewpoint stability of foundational models - specifically, their sensitivity to changes in viewpoint- and define instability as significant feature variations resulting from minor changes in viewing angle, leading to generalization gaps in 3D reasoning tasks. We investigate nine foundational models, focusing on their responses to viewpoint changes, including the often-overlooked accidental viewpoints where specific camera orientations obscure an object's true 3D structure. Our methodology enables recognizing and classifying out-of-distribution (OOD), accidental, and stable viewpoints using feature representations alone, without accessing the actual images. Our findings indicate that while foundation models consistently encode accidental viewpoints, they vary in their interpretation of OOD viewpoints due to inherent biases, at times leading to object misclassifications based on geometric resemblance. Through quantitative and qualitative evaluations on three downstream tasks - classification, VQA, and 3D reconstruction - we illustrate the impact of viewpoint instability and underscore the importance of feature robustness across diverse viewing conditions., Comment: 8 pages + 3 pages of references. 8 figures, 3 tables

We have conducted a GPU accelerated reprocessing of $\sim 87\%$ of the archival data from the High Time Resolution Universe South Low Latitude (HTRU-S LowLat) pulsar survey by implementing a pulsar search pipeline that was previously used to reprocess the Parkes Multibeam pulsar survey (PMPS). We coherently searched the full 72-min observations of the survey with an acceleration search range up to $|50|\, \rm m\,s^{-2}$, which is most sensitive to binary pulsars experiencing nearly constant acceleration during 72 minutes of their orbital period. Here we report the discovery of 71 pulsars, including 6 millisecond pulsars (MSPs) of which five are in binary systems, and seven pulsars with very high dispersion measures (DM $>800 \, \rm pc \, cm^{-3}$). These pulsar discoveries largely arose by folding candidates to a much lower spectral signal-to-noise ratio than previous surveys, and exploiting the coherence of folding over the incoherent summing of the Fourier components to discover new pulsars as well as candidate classification techniques. We show that these pulsars could be fainter and on average more distant as compared to both the previously reported 100 HTRU-S LowLat pulsars and background pulsar population in the survey region. We have assessed the effectiveness of our search method and the overall pulsar yield of the survey. We show that through this reprocessing we have achieved the expected survey goals including the predicted number of pulsars in the survey region and discuss the major causes as to why these pulsars were missed in previous processings of the survey., Comment: 18 Pages, 12 figures, 9 tables. This paper presents an experimental framework for implementing Decentralized Autonomous Database Systems (DADBS) using the Rust programming language. As traditional centralized databases face challenges in scalability, security, and autonomy, DADBS emerge as a promising solution, using blockchain principles to create distributed, self-governing database systems. Our framework explores the practical aspects of building a DADBS, focusing on Rust's unique features that improves system reliability and performance. We evaluated our DADBS implementation across several key performance metrics: throughput, latency(read), latency(write), scalability, CPU utilization, Memory Usage and Network I/O, The average results obtained over a 24-hour period of continuous operation were 3,000 transactions/second, 75 ms, 250 ms, 55%, 2.5 GB, 100MB/s. The security analysis depicts that even with an increase in the percentage of malicious nodes, DADBS still maintains high throughput and consistency. The paper discusses key design decisions, highlighting how Rust's ownership model and concurrency features address common challenges in distributed systems. We also examine the current limitations of our approach and potential areas for future research. By providing this comprehensive overview of a Rust-based DADBS implementation, we aim to contribute to the growing body of knowledge on decentralized database architectures and their practical realization.

Generating 3D models from multi-view 2D RGB images has gained significant attention, extending the capabilities of technologies like Virtual Reality, Robotic Vision, and human-machine interaction. In this paper, we introduce a hybrid strategy combining CNNs and transformers, featuring a visual auto-encoder with self-attention mechanisms and a 3D refiner network, trained using a novel Joint Train Separate Optimization (JTSO) algorithm. Encoded features from unordered inputs are transformed into an enhanced feature map by the self-attention layer, decoded into an initial 3D volume, and further refined. Our network generates 3D voxels from single or multiple 2D images from arbitrary viewpoints. Performance evaluations using the ShapeNet datasets show that our approach, combined with JTSO, outperforms state-of-the-art techniques in single and multi-view 3D reconstruction, achieving the highest mean intersection over union (IOU) scores, surpassing other models by 4.2% in single-view reconstruction., Comment: ICVGIP-2024, 8 pages

Optical data center networks (DCNs) are emerging as a promising solution for cloud infrastructure in the post-Moore's Law era, particularly with the advent of 'fast-switched' optical architectures capable of circuit reconfiguration at microsecond or even nanosecond scales. However, frequent reconfiguration of optical circuits introduces a unique challenge: in-flight packets risk loss during these transitions, hindering the deployment of many mature optical hardware designs due to the lack of suitable routing solutions. In this paper, we present Unified Routing for Optical networks (URO), a general routing framework designed to support fast-switched optical DCNs across various hardware architectures. URO combines theoretical modeling of this novel routing problem with practical implementation on programmable switches, enabling precise, time-based packet transmission. Our prototype on Intel Tofino2 switches achieves a minimum circuit duration of 2us, ensuring end-to-end, loss-free application performance. Large-scale simulations using production DCN traffic validate URO's generality across different hardware configurations, demonstrating its effectiveness and efficient system resource utilization.

Segment Anything Model 2 (SAM 2) has emerged as a powerful tool for video object segmentation and tracking anything. Key components of SAM 2 that drive the impressive video object segmentation performance include a large multistage image encoder for frame feature extraction and a memory mechanism that stores memory contexts from past frames to help current frame segmentation. The high computation complexity of multistage image encoder and memory module has limited its applications in real-world tasks, e.g., video object segmentation on mobile devices. To address this limitation, we propose EfficientTAMs, lightweight track anything models that produce high-quality results with low latency and model size. Our idea is based on revisiting the plain, nonhierarchical Vision Transformer (ViT) as an image encoder for video object segmentation, and introducing an efficient memory module, which reduces the complexity for both frame feature extraction and memory computation for current frame segmentation. We take vanilla lightweight ViTs and efficient memory module to build EfficientTAMs, and train the models on SA-1B and SA-V datasets for video object segmentation and track anything tasks. We evaluate on multiple video segmentation benchmarks including semi-supervised VOS and promptable video segmentation, and find that our proposed EfficientTAM with vanilla ViT perform comparably to SAM 2 model (HieraB+SAM 2) with ~2x speedup on A100 and ~2.4x parameter reduction. On segment anything image tasks, our EfficientTAMs also perform favorably over original SAM with ~20x speedup on A100 and ~20x parameter reduction. On mobile devices such as iPhone 15 Pro Max, our EfficientTAMs can run at ~10 FPS for performing video object segmentation with reasonable quality, highlighting the capability of small models for on-device video object segmentation applications.

Optical data center networks (DCNs) are emerging as a promising design for cloud infrastructure. However, existing optical DCN architectures operate as closed ecosystems, tying software solutions to specific optical hardware. We introduce Lighthouse, an open research framework that decouples software from hardware, allowing them to evolve independently. Central to Lighthouse is the time-flow table abstraction, serving as a common interface between optical hardware and software. We develop Lighthouse on programmable switches, achieving a minimum optical circuit duration of 2 {\mu}s, the shortest duration realized by commodity devices to date. We demonstrate Lighthouse's generality by implementing six optical architectures on an optical testbed and conducted extensive benchmarks on a 108-ToR setup, highlighting system efficiency. Additionally, we present case studies that identify potential research topics enabled by Lighthouse.

Image generation using diffusion models have demonstrated outstanding learning capabilities, effectively capturing the full distribution of the training dataset. They are known to generate wide variations in sampled images, albeit with a trade-off in image fidelity. Guided sampling methods, such as classifier guidance (CG) and classifier-free guidance (CFG), focus sampling in well-learned high-probability regions to generate images of high fidelity, but each has its limitations. CG is computationally expensive due to the use of back-propagation for classifier gradient descent, while CFG, being gradient-free, is more efficient but compromises class label alignment compared to CG. In this work, we propose an efficient guidance method that fully utilizes a pre-trained classifier without using gradient descent. By using the classifier solely in inference mode, a time-adaptive reference class label and corresponding guidance scale are determined at each time step for guided sampling. Experiments on both class-conditioned and text-to-image generation diffusion models demonstrate that the proposed Gradient-free Classifier Guidance (GFCG) method consistently improves class prediction accuracy. We also show GFCG to be complementary to other guided sampling methods like CFG. When combined with the state-of-the-art Autoguidance (ATG), without additional computational overhead, it enhances image fidelity while preserving diversity. For ImageNet 512$\times$512, we achieve a record $\text{FD}_{\text{DINOv2}}$ of 23.09, while simultaneously attaining a higher classification Precision (94.3%) compared to ATG (90.2%)

Recent methodological research in causal inference has focused on effects of stochastic interventions, which assign treatment randomly, often according to subject-specific covariates. In this work, we demonstrate that the usual notion of stochastic interventions have a surprising property: when there is unmeasured confounding, bounds on their effects do not collapse when the policy approaches the observational regime. As an alternative, we propose to study generalized policies, treatment rules that can depend on covariates, the natural value of treatment, and auxiliary randomness. We show that certain generalized policy formulations can resolve the "non-collapsing" bound issue: bounds narrow to a point when the target treatment distribution approaches that in the observed data. Moreover, drawing connections to the theory of optimal transport, we characterize generalized policies that minimize worst-case bound width in various sensitivity analysis models, as well as corresponding sharp bounds on their causal effects. These optimal policies are new, and can have a more parsimonious interpretation compared to their usual stochastic policy analogues. Finally, we develop flexible, efficient, and robust estimators for the sharp nonparametric bounds that emerge from the framework., Comment: 37 pages, 1 figure

Autonomous multi-agent systems such as hospital robots and package delivery drones often operate in highly uncertain environments and are expected to achieve complex temporal task objectives while ensuring safety. While learning-based methods such as reinforcement learning are popular methods to train single and multi-agent autonomous systems under user-specified and state-based reward functions, applying these methods to satisfy trajectory-level task objectives is a challenging problem. Our first contribution is the use of weighted automata to specify trajectory-level objectives, such that, maximal paths induced in the weighted automaton correspond to desired trajectory-level behaviors. We show how weighted automata-based specifications go beyond timeliness properties focused on deadlines to performance properties such as expeditiousness. Our second contribution is the use of evolutionary game theory (EGT) principles to train homogeneous multi-agent teams targeting homogeneous task objectives. We show how shared experiences of agents and EGT-based policy updates allow us to outperform state-of-the-art reinforcement learning (RL) methods in minimizing path length by nearly 30\% in large spaces. We also show that our algorithm is computationally faster than deep RL methods by at least an order of magnitude. Additionally our results indicate that it scales better with an increase in the number of agents as compared to other methods.

Unconventional superconductivity, where electron pairing does not involve electron-phonon interactions, is often attributed to magnetic correlations in a material. Well known examples include high-T_c cuprates and uranium-based heavy fermion superconductors. Less explored are unconventional superconductors with strong spin-orbit coupling, where interactions between spin-polarised electrons and external magnetic field can result in multiple superconducting phases and field-induced transitions between them, a rare phenomenon in the superconducting state. Here we report a magnetic-field driven phase transition in \beta-PdBi2, a layered non-magnetic superconductor. Our tunnelling spectroscopy on thin PdBi2 monocrystals incorporated in planar superconductor-insulator-normal metal junctions reveals a marked discontinuity in the superconducting properties with increasing in-plane field, which is consistent with a transition from conventional (s-wave) to nodal pairing. Our theoretical analysis suggests that this phase transition may arise from spin polarisation and spin-momentum locking caused by locally broken inversion symmetry, with p-wave pairing becoming energetically favourable in high fields. The rovibrational level populations, and subsequent emission in various astrophysical environments, is driven by inelastic collision processes. The available rovibrational rate coefficients for water have been calculated using a number of approximations. We present a numerically exact calculation for the rovibrational quenching for all water vibrational modes due to collisions with atomic hydrogen. The scattering theory implements a quantum close-coupling (CC) method on a high level ab initio six-dimensional (6D) potential energy surface (PES). Total rovibrational quenching cross sections for excited bending levels were compared with earlier results on a 4D PES with the rigid-bender close-coupling (RBCC) approximation. General agreement between 6D-CC and 4D-RBCC calculations are found, but differences are evident including the energy and amplitude of low-energy orbiting resonances. Quenching cross sections from the symmetric and asymmetric stretch modes are provided for the first time. Background: The rate of energy production in the hot-CNO cycle and breakout to the rapid-proton capture process in Type I X-ray bursts is strongly related to the $^{14}$O($\alpha,p$)$^{17}$F reaction rate. The properties of states in $^{18}$Ne near $E_x=6.1-6.3$ MeV are important for understanding this reaction rate. Experiment: The RESOLUT radioactive-ion beam facility at Florida State University was used to study $^{18}$Ne resonances around this energy region using $^{17}$F(p,p)$^{17}$F elastic scattering on a polypropylene target under inverse kinematics. Scattered protons were detected in a silicon-strip detector array while recoiling $^{17}$F ions were detected in coincidence in a gas ionization detector. Analysis: An $R$-matrix analysis of measured cross sections was conducted along with a reanalysis of data from previous measurements. Results: All the data analyzed are well described by a consistent set of parameters with with a $1^-$ assignment for a state at 6.14(1) MeV. A second comparable solution is also found with a $3^-$ assignment for the 6.14(1) MeV state. The rate of the $^{14}$O($\alpha$,p)$^{17}$F reaction that is determined from the two solutions differs by up to an order of magnitude., Comment: Update name of one of the authors

We present the mission concept "Mission to Analyze the UltraViolet universE" (MAUVE), a wide-field spectrometer and imager conceived during the inaugural NASA Astrophysics Mission Design School. MAUVE responds to the 2023 Announcement of Opportunity for Probe-class missions, with a budget cap of \$1 billion, and would hypothetically launch in 2031. However, the formulation of MAUVE was an educational exercise and the mission is not being developed further. The Principal Investigator-led science of MAUVE aligns with the priorities outlined in the 2020 Astrophysics Decadal Survey, enabling new characterizations of exoplanet atmospheres, the early-time light curves of some of the universe's most explosive transients, and the poorly-understood extragalactic background light. Because the Principal Investigator science occupies 30% of the observing time available during the mission's 5 yr lifespan, we provide an observing plan that would allow for 70% of the observing time to be used for General Observer programs, with community-solicited proposals. The onboard detector (THISTLE) claims significant heritage from the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph on Hubble, but extends its wavelength range down to the extreme UV. We note that MAUVE would be the first satellite in decades with the ability to access this regime of the electromagnetic spectrum. MAUVE has a field of view of 900" x 900" a photometric sensitivity extending to $m_{UV}\leq 24$, and a resolving power of $R\sim1000$. Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) operations are expected to transform air transportation while challenging current air traffic management practices. By introducing a novel market-based mechanism, we address the problem of on-demand allocation of capacity-constrained airspace to AAM vehicles with heterogeneous and private valuations. We model airspace and air infrastructure as a collection of contiguous regions with constraints on the number of vehicles that simultaneously enter, stay, or exit each region. Vehicles request access to the airspace with trajectories spanning multiple regions at different times. We use the graph structure of our airspace model to formulate the allocation problem as a path allocation problem on a time-extended graph. To ensure the cost information of AAM vehicles remains private, we introduce a novel mechanism that allocates each vehicle a budget of "air-credits" and anonymously charges prices for traversing the edges of the time-extended graph. We seek to compute a competitive equilibrium that ensures that: (i) capacity constraints are satisfied, (ii) a strictly positive resource price implies that the sector capacity is fully utilized, and (iii) the allocation is integral and optimal for each AAM vehicle given current prices, without requiring access to individual vehicle utilities. However, a competitive equilibrium with integral allocations may not always exist. We provide sufficient conditions for the existence and computation of a fractional-competitive equilibrium, where allocations can be fractional. Building on these theoretical insights, we propose a distributed, iterative, two-step algorithm that: 1) computes a fractional competitive equilibrium, and 2) derives an integral allocation from this equilibrium. The reported discovery of a cold (~10$^4$ K) disc-like structure within 0.005 pc around the super-massive black hole at the centre of the Milky Way, Sgr A*, has challenged our understanding of the gas dynamics and thermodynamic state of the plasma in its immediate vicinity. State-of-the-art simulations do not agree on whether or not such a disc can be a product of the multiple stellar wind interactions of the mass-losing stars in the region. This study aims to constrain the conditions for the formation of a cold disc as a natural outcome of the system of the mass-losing stars orbiting around Sgr A*, to investigate whether the disc is a transient or long-lasting structure, and to assess the validity of the model through direct comparisons with observations. We performed a set of hydrodynamic simulations of the observed Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars feeding Sgr A* using the finite-volume adaptive mesh refinement code Ramses. We focus, for the first time, on the impact of the chemical composition of the plasma emanating from the WR stars. The simulations show that the chemical composition of the plasma affects the radiative cooling enough to impact the properties of the medium, such as density and temperature, and, as a consequence, the rate at which the material inflows onto Sgr A*. We demonstrate that the formation of a cold disc from the stellar winds is possible for certain chemical compositions that are consistent with the current observational constraints. However, even in such cases, it is not possible to reproduce the reported properties of the observed disc-like structure, namely its inclination and the fluxes of its hydrogen recombination lines. We conclude that the stellar winds alone are not sufficient to form the cold disc around Sgr A* inferred from observations. We studied the effects of point defects and Hg impurities in the electronic properties of bismuth iodide (Bi$_4$I$_4$). Our transport measurements after annealing at different temperatures show that the resistivity of Bi$_4$I$_4$ depends on its thermal history, suggesting that the formation of native defects and impurities can shape the temperature dependence of electrical resistivity. Our density functional theory calculations indicate that the bismuth and iodine antisites, and bismuth vacancies are the dominant native point defects. We find that bismuth antisites introduce resonant states in the band-edges, while iodine antisites and bismuth vacancies lead to a $n$-type and $p$-type doping of Bi$_4$I$_4$, respectively. The Hg impurities are likely to be found at Bi substitutional sites, giving rise to the $p$-type doping of Bi$_4$I$_4$. Overall, our findings indicate that the presence of native point defects and impurities can significantly modify the electronic properties, and, thus, impact the resistivity profile of Bi$_4$I$_4$ due to modifications in the amount and type of carriers, and the associated defect(impurity) scattering. Our results suggest possible routes for pursuing fine-tuning of the electronic properties of quasi-one-dimensional quantum materials.

Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) have shown promising progress in understanding and analyzing video content. However, processing long videos remains a significant challenge constrained by LLM's context size. To address this limitation, we propose LongVU, a spatiotemporal adaptive compression mechanism thats reduces the number of video tokens while preserving visual details of long videos. Our idea is based on leveraging cross-modal query and inter-frame dependencies to adaptively reduce temporal and spatial redundancy in videos. Specifically, we leverage DINOv2 features to remove redundant frames that exhibit high similarity. Then we utilize text-guided cross-modal query for selective frame feature reduction. Further, we perform spatial token reduction across frames based on their temporal dependencies. Our adaptive compression strategy effectively processes a large number of frames with little visual information loss within given context length. Digital payment systems have revolutionized financial transactions, offering unparalleled convenience and accessibility to users worldwide. However, the increasing popularity of these platforms has also attracted malicious actors seeking to exploit their vulnerabilities for financial gain. To address this challenge, robust and adaptable scam detection mechanisms are crucial for maintaining the trust and safety of digital payment ecosystems. This paper presents a comprehensive approach to scam detection, focusing on the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in India, Google Pay (GPay) as a specific use case. The approach leverages Large Language Models (LLMs) to enhance scam classification accuracy and designs a digital assistant to aid human reviewers in identifying and mitigating fraudulent activities. The results demonstrate the potential of LLMs in augmenting existing machine learning models and improving the efficiency, accuracy, quality, and consistency of scam reviews, ultimately contributing to a safer and more secure digital payment landscape. Our evaluation of the Gemini Ultra model on curated transaction data showed a 93.33% accuracy in scam classification. Furthermore, the model demonstrated 89% accuracy in generating reasoning for these classifications. Multi-agent systems are trained to maximize shared cost objectives, which typically reflect system-level efficiency. However, in the resource-constrained environments of mobility and transportation systems, efficiency may be achieved at the expense of fairness -- certain agents may incur significantly greater costs or lower rewards compared to others. Tasks could be distributed inequitably, leading to some agents receiving an unfair advantage while others incur disproportionately high costs. It is important to consider the tradeoffs between efficiency and fairness. We consider the problem of fair multi-agent navigation for a group of decentralized agents using multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL). We consider the reciprocal of the coefficient of variation of the distances traveled by different agents as a measure of fairness and investigate whether agents can learn to be fair without significantly sacrificing efficiency (i.e., increasing the total distance traveled). We find that by training agents using min-max fair distance goal assignments along with a reward term that incentivizes fairness as they move towards their goals, the agents (1) learn a fair assignment of goals and (2) achieve almost perfect goal coverage in navigation scenarios using only local observations. For goal coverage scenarios, we find that, on average, our model yields a 14% improvement in efficiency and a 5% improvement in fairness over a baseline trained using random assignments. Furthermore, an average of 21% improvement in fairness can be achieved compared to a model trained on optimally efficient assignments; this increase in fairness comes at the expense of only a 7% decrease in efficiency. Finally, we extend our method to environments in which agents must complete coverage tasks in prescribed formations and show that it is possible to do so without tailoring the models to specific formation shapes., Comment: Manuscript accepted in ACM Journal on Autonomous Transportation Systems

End-Stage Liver Disease (ESLD), a complex condition, has high rates of co-occurring comorbidities affecting multiple organ systems. There is no clear evidence-based practice (EBP) guidelines addressing the progression of comorbidities in ESLD patients awaiting liver transplantation (LT) and their impact on survival, both pre- and post-transplant. This study aimed to identify and quantify the trajectory of the most common and deteriorating comorbidities in ESLD patients awaiting LT and to analyze their effect on patient outcomes. An initial exploratory phase to identify frequent comorbidities in ESLD patients. Relevant EBP-driven data for diagnosing and measuring the progression of these conditions were collected and organized into five research matrices. In the quantitative phase, a retrospective analysis was conducted using longitudinal de-identified data from electronic health records (EHR) for patients who underwent LT between 2011-2021. Data included demographics, labs, procedures, and medications. Descriptive statistics and survival analysis assessed the association of comorbidities with post-transplant survival. The five most frequent comorbidities identified were Diabetes Mellitus (DM), Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), Malnutrition, Portal Hypertension (PH), and Ascites. Of the 722 patients analyzed, 68.2% were male, mean age of 54.81 (SD = 11.24), and 19.8% died post-LT. Survival analysis showed a gradual decline over time, with the most significant drop at five years post-LT. Significant predictors of post-LT survival were age at transplant (p=0.01), waitlist time (p=0.004), DM at listing (p=0.02), low albumin (p=0.03), and CKD stage 5 development after listing (p=0.04). In recent years, there has been increasing interest in using formal methods-based techniques to safely achieve temporal tasks, such as timed sequence of goals, or patrolling objectives. Such tasks are often expressed in real-time logics such as Signal Temporal Logic (STL), whereby, the logical specification is encoded into an optimization problem. Such approaches usually involve optimizing over the quantitative semantics, or robustness degree, of the logic over bounded horizons: the semantics can be encoded as mixed-integer linear constraints or into smooth approximations of the robustness degree. A major limitation of this approach is that it faces scalability challenges with respect to temporal complexity: for example, encoding long-term tasks requires storing the entire history of the system. In this paper, we present a quantitative generalization of such tasks in the form of symbolic automata objectives. Specifically, we show that symbolic automata can be expressed as matrix operators that lend themselves to automatic differentiation, allowing for the use of off-the-shelf gradient-based optimizers. Applying deep learning (DL) for annotating surgical instruments in robot-assisted minimally invasive surgeries (MIS) represents a significant advancement in surgical technology. This systematic review examines 48 studies that and advanced DL methods and architectures. These sophisticated DL models have shown notable improvements in the precision and efficiency of detecting and segmenting surgical tools. The enhanced capabilities of these models support various clinical applications, including real-time intraoperative guidance, comprehensive postoperative evaluations, and objective assessments of surgical skills. By accurately identifying and segmenting surgical instruments in video data, DL models provide detailed feedback to surgeons, thereby improving surgical outcomes and reducing complication risks. Furthermore, the application of DL in surgical education is transformative. The review underscores the significant impact of DL on improving the accuracy of skill assessments and the overall quality of surgical training programs. However, implementing DL in surgical tool detection and segmentation faces challenges, such as the need for large, accurately annotated datasets to train these models effectively. The manual annotation process is labor-intensive and time-consuming, posing a significant bottleneck. Future research should focus on automating the detection and segmentation process and enhancing the robustness of DL models against environmental variations. Expanding the application of DL models across various surgical specialties will be essential to fully realize this technology's potential. In the post-fifth generation (5G) era, escalating user quality of service (QoS) strains terrestrial network capacity, especially in urban areas with dynamic traffic distributions. This paper introduces a novel cooperative unmanned aerial vehicle relay-based deployment (CUD) framework in satellite air-ground integrated networks (SAGIN). The CUD strategy deploys an unmanned aerial vehicle-based relay (UAVr) in an amplify-andforward (AF) mode to enhance user QoS when terrestrial base stations fall short of network capacity. By combining low earth orbit (LEO) satellite and UAVr signals using cooperative diversity, the CUD framework enhances the signal to noise ratio (SNR) at the user. Uncertainty quantification is crucial to account for the imperfect predictions of machine learning algorithms for high-impact applications. Conformal prediction (CP) is a powerful framework for uncertainty quantification that generates calibrated prediction intervals with valid coverage. In this work, we study how CP intervals are affected by bias - the systematic deviation of a prediction from ground truth values - a phenomenon prevalent in many real-world applications. We investigate the influence of bias on interval lengths of two different types of adjustments -- symmetric adjustments, the conventional method where both sides of the interval are adjusted equally, and asymmetric adjustments, a more flexible method where the interval can be adjusted unequally in positive or negative directions. We present theoretical and empirical analyses characterizing how symmetric and asymmetric adjustments impact the "tightness" of CP intervals for regression tasks. Specifically for absolute residual and quantile-based non-conformity scores, we prove: 1) the upper bound of symmetrically adjusted interval lengths increases by $2|b|$ where $b$ is a globally applied scalar value representing bias, 2) asymmetrically adjusted interval lengths are not affected by bias, and 3) conditions when asymmetrically adjusted interval lengths are guaranteed to be smaller than symmetric ones. Our analyses suggest that even if predictions exhibit significant drift from ground truth values, asymmetrically adjusted intervals are still able to maintain the same tightness and validity of intervals as if the drift had never happened, while symmetric ones significantly inflate the lengths. We demonstrate our theoretical results with two real-world prediction tasks: sparse-view computed tomography (CT) reconstruction and time-series weather forecasting. This work develops a distributed graph neural network (GNN) methodology for mesh-based modeling applications using a consistent neural message passing layer. As the name implies, the focus is on enabling scalable operations that satisfy physical consistency via halo nodes at sub-graph boundaries. Here, consistency refers to the fact that a GNN trained and evaluated on one rank (one large graph) is arithmetically equivalent to evaluations on multiple ranks (a partitioned graph). This concept is demonstrated by interfacing GNNs with NekRS, a GPU-capable exascale CFD solver developed at Argonne National Laboratory. It is shown how the NekRS mesh partitioning can be linked to the distributed GNN training and inference routines, resulting in a scalable mesh-based data-driven modeling workflow. We study the impact of consistency on the scalability of mesh-based GNNs, demonstrating efficient scaling in consistent GNNs for up to O(1B) graph nodes on the Frontier exascale supercomputer.

The discovery of chiral helical magnetism (CHM) in Cr$_{1/3}$NbS$_2$ and the stabilization of a chiral soliton lattice (CSL) has attracted considerable interest in view of their potential technological applications. However, there is an ongoing debate regarding whether the sister compound, Mn$_{1/3}$NbS$_2$, which shares the same crystal structure, exhibits similar nontrivial properties which rely on the stabilization of the lack of inversion symmetry at the magnetic ion. In this study, we conduct a comprehensive investigation of the magnetically ordered states of both compounds, using $^{53}$Cr, $^{55}$Mn and $^{93}$Nb nuclear magnetic resonance. Our results, supported by density functional calculations, detect in a high-quality single crystal of Cr$_{1/3}$NbS$_2$ all the signatures of the monoaxial CHM in a magnetic field, identifying it as a textbook NMR case. The detailed understanding of this prototypic behavior provides a reference for Mn$_{1/3}$NbS$_2$. Understanding local risks from extreme rainfall, such as flooding, requires both long records (to sample rare events) and high-resolution products (to assess localized hazards). Unfortunately, there is a dearth of long-record and high-resolution products that can be used to understand local risk and precipitation science. In this paper, we present a novel generative diffusion model that downscales (super-resolves) globally available Climate Prediction Center (CPC) gauge-based precipitation products and ERA5 reanalysis data to generate kilometer-scale precipitation estimates. Downscaling gauge-based precipitation from 55 km to 1 km while recovering extreme rainfall signals poses significant challenges. To enforce our model (named WassDiff) to produce well-calibrated precipitation intensity values, we introduce a Wasserstein Distance Regularization (WDR) term for the score-matching training objective in the diffusion denoising process. We show that WDR greatly enhances the model's ability to capture extreme values compared to diffusion without WDR. Extensive evaluation shows that WassDiff has better reconstruction accuracy and bias scores than conventional score-based diffusion models. Case studies of extreme weather phenomena, like tropical storms and cold fronts, demonstrate WassDiff's ability to produce appropriate spatial patterns while capturing extremes. Such downscaling capability enables the generation of extensive km-scale precipitation datasets from existing historical global gauge records and current gauge measurements in areas without high-resolution radar., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures

We consider a novel multivariate nonparametric two-sample testing problem where, under the alternative, distributions $P$ and $Q$ are separated in an integral probability metric over functions of bounded total variation (TV IPM). We propose a new test, the graph TV test, which uses a graph-based approximation to the TV IPM as its test statistic. We show that this test, computed with an $\varepsilon$-neighborhood graph and calibrated by permutation, is minimax rate-optimal for detecting alternatives separated in the TV IPM. As an important special case, we show that this implies the graph TV test is optimal for detecting spatially localized alternatives, whereas the $\chi^2$ test is provably suboptimal. Our theory is supported with numerical experiments on simulated and real data.

We introduce a novel representation named as the unified gripper coordinate space for grasp synthesis of multiple grippers. The space is a 2D surface of a sphere in 3D using longitude and latitude as its coordinates, and it is shared for all robotic grippers. We propose a new algorithm to map the palm surface of a gripper into the unified gripper coordinate space, and design a conditional variational autoencoder to predict the unified gripper coordinates given an input object. The predicted unified gripper coordinates establish correspondences between the gripper and the object, which can be used in an optimization problem to solve the grasp pose and the finger joints for grasp synthesis. Real-time dynamic scheduling is a crucial but notoriously challenging task in modern manufacturing processes due to its high decision complexity. Recently, reinforcement learning (RL) has been gaining attention as an impactful technique to handle this challenge. However, classical RL methods typically rely on human-made dispatching rules, which are not suitable for large-scale factory-wide scheduling. To bridge this gap, this paper applies a leader-follower multi-agent RL (MARL) concept to obtain desired coordination after decomposing the scheduling problem into a set of sub-problems that are handled by each individual agent for scalability. We further strengthen the procedure by proposing a rule-based conversion algorithm to prevent catastrophic loss of production capacity due to an agent's error. Our experimental results demonstrate that the proposed model outperforms the state-of-the-art deep RL-based scheduling models in various aspects. Additionally, the proposed model provides the most robust scheduling performance to demand changes. Overall, the proposed MARL-based scheduling model presents a promising solution to the real-time scheduling problem, with potential applications in various manufacturing industries.

We demonstrate that the Wasserstein distance $W_{1}$ corresponding to optical tomograms of nonclassical states faithfully captures changes that arise due to photon addition to, or subtraction from, these states. $W_{1}$ is a true measure of distance in the quantum state space, and is sensitive to the underlying interference structures that arise in the tomogram after changes in the photon number. Our procedure is universally applicable to the cat and squeezed states, the former displaying the characteristic negativity in its Wigner function, while the latter does not do so. We explicate this in the case of the squeezed vacuum and even coherent states and show that photon addition (or subtraction) is mirrored in the shift in the intensity of specific regions in the tomogram. Further, we examine the dependence of $W_{1}$ on the squeezing parameter, and its sensitivity to different quadratures., Comment: 10 pages, 12 figures

Advances in microscopy imaging enable researchers to visualize structures at the nanoscale level thereby unraveling intricate details of biological organization. However, challenges such as image noise, photobleaching of fluorophores, and low tolerability of biological samples to high light doses remain, restricting temporal resolutions and experiment durations. Reduced laser doses enable longer measurements at the cost of lower resolution and increased noise, which hinders accurate downstream analyses. Here we train a denoising diffusion probabilistic model (DDPM) to predict high-resolution images by conditioning the model on low-resolution information. Additionally, the probabilistic aspect of the DDPM allows for repeated generation of images that tend to further increase the signal-to-noise ratio. We show that our model achieves a performance that is better or similar to the previously best-performing methods, across four highly diverse datasets. Importantly, while any of the previous methods show competitive performance for some, but not all datasets, our method consistently achieves high performance across all four data sets, suggesting high generalizability.

Implicit neural representations (INRs) have demonstrated success in a variety of applications, including inverse problems and neural rendering. An INR is typically trained to capture one signal of interest, resulting in learned neural features that are highly attuned to that signal. Assumed to be less generalizable, we explore the aspect of transferability of such learned neural features for fitting similar signals. We introduce a new INR training framework, STRAINER that learns transferrable features for fitting INRs to new signals from a given distribution, faster and with better reconstruction quality. Owing to the sequential layer-wise affine operations in an INR, we propose to learn transferable representations by sharing initial encoder layers across multiple INRs with independent decoder layers. At test time, the learned encoder representations are transferred as initialization for an otherwise randomly initialized INR. We find STRAINER to yield extremely powerful initialization for fitting images from the same domain and allow for $\approx +10dB$ gain in signal quality early on compared to an untrained INR itself. STRAINER also provides a simple way to encode data-driven priors in INRs. We evaluate STRAINER on multiple in-domain and out-of-domain signal fitting tasks and inverse problems and further provide detailed analysis and discussion on the transferability of STRAINER's features. A graph neural network (GNN) approach is introduced in this work which enables mesh-based three-dimensional super-resolution of fluid flows. In this framework, the GNN is designed to operate not on the full mesh-based field at once, but on localized meshes of elements (or cells) directly. To facilitate mesh-based GNN representations in a manner similar to spectral (or finite) element discretizations, a baseline GNN layer (termed a message passing layer, which updates local node properties) is modified to account for synchronization of coincident graph nodes, rendering compatibility with commonly used element-based mesh connectivities. The architecture is multiscale in nature, and is comprised of a combination of coarse-scale and fine-scale message passing layer sequences (termed processors) separated by a graph unpooling layer. The coarse-scale processor embeds a query element (alongside a set number of neighboring coarse elements) into a single latent graph representation using coarse-scale synchronized message passing over the element neighborhood, and the fine-scale processor leverages additional message passing operations on this latent graph to correct for interpolation errors. Demonstration studies are performed using hexahedral mesh-based data from Taylor-Green Vortex flow simulations at Reynolds numbers of 1600 and 3200. Through analysis of both global and local errors, the results ultimately show how the GNN is able to produce accurate super-resolved fields compared to targets in both coarse-scale and multiscale model configurations.

Continual Federated Learning (CFL) is essential for enabling real-world applications where multiple decentralized clients adaptively learn from continuous data streams. A significant challenge in CFL is mitigating catastrophic forgetting, where models lose previously acquired knowledge when learning new information. Existing approaches often face difficulties due to the constraints of device storage capacities and the heterogeneous nature of data distributions among clients. While some CFL algorithms have addressed these challenges, they frequently rely on unrealistic assumptions about the availability of task boundaries (i.e., knowing when new tasks begin). To address these limitations, we introduce Fed-A-GEM, a federated adaptation of the A-GEM method (Chaudhry et al., 2019), which employs a buffer-based gradient projection approach. Fed-A-GEM alleviates catastrophic forgetting by leveraging local buffer samples and aggregated buffer gradients, thus preserving knowledge across multiple clients. Our method is combined with existing CFL techniques, enhancing their performance in the CFL context. Our experiments on standard benchmarks show consistent performance improvements across diverse scenarios. For example, in a task-incremental learning scenario using the CIFAR-100 dataset, our method can increase the accuracy by up to 27%. We study the distribution of shadow lines in $E(\mathbb{Q})\otimes\mathbb{Z}_p$ as $K$ varies, framing conjectures based on the computations we have made.

Computed Tomography (CT) scans are the standard-of-care for the visualization and diagnosis of many clinical ailments, and are needed for the treatment planning of external beam radiotherapy. Unfortunately, the availability of CT scanners in low- and mid-resource settings is highly variable. Planar x-ray radiography units, in comparison, are far more prevalent, but can only provide limited 2D observations of the 3D anatomy. In this work we propose DIFR3CT, a 3D latent diffusion model, that can generate a distribution of plausible CT volumes from one or few (<10) planar x-ray observations. DIFR3CT works by fusing 2D features from each x-ray into a joint 3D space, and performing diffusion conditioned on these fused features in a low-dimensional latent space. We conduct extensive experiments demonstrating that DIFR3CT is better than recent sparse CT reconstruction baselines in terms of standard pixel-level (PSNR, SSIM) on both the public LIDC and in-house post-mastectomy CT datasets. We also show that DIFR3CT supports uncertainty quantification via Monte Carlo sampling, which provides an opportunity to measure reconstruction reliability. Finally, we perform a preliminary pilot study evaluating DIFR3CT for automated breast radiotherapy contouring and planning -- and demonstrate promising feasibility. Current observational evidence reveals that fast radio bursts (FRBs) exhibit bandwidths ranging from a few dozen MHz to several GHz. Traditional FRB searches primarily employ matched filter methods on time series collapsed across the entire observational bandwidth. However, with modern ultra-wideband receivers featuring GHz-scale observational bandwidths, this approach may overlook a significant number of events. We investigate the efficacy of sub-banded searches for FRBs, a technique seeking bursts within limited portions of the bandwidth. These searches aim to enhance the significance of FRB detections by mitigating the impact of noise outside the targeted frequency range, thereby improving signal-to-noise ratios. We conducted a series of Monte Carlo simulations, for the $400$-MHz bandwidth Parkes 21-cm multi-beam (PMB) receiver system and the Parkes Ultra-Wideband Low (UWL) receiver, simulating bursts down to frequency widths of about $100$\,MHz. Additionally, we performed a complete reprocessing of the high-latitude segment of the High Time Resolution Universe South survey (HTRU-S) of the Parkes-Murriyang telescope using sub-banded search techniques. Simulations reveal that a sub-banded search can enhance the burst search efficiency by $67_{-42}^{+133}$ % for the PMB system and $1433_{-126}^{+143}$ % for the UWL receiver. Furthermore, the reprocessing of HTRU led to the confident detection of eighteen new bursts, nearly tripling the count of FRBs found in this survey. Aggregating the preferences of multiple agents into a collective decision is a common step in many important problems across areas of computer science including information retrieval, reinforcement learning, and recommender systems. As Social Choice Theory has shown, the problem of designing algorithms for aggregation rules with specific properties (axioms) can be difficult, or provably impossible in some cases. Instead of designing algorithms by hand, one can learn aggregation rules, particularly voting rules, from data. However, the prior work in this area has required extremely large models, or been limited by the choice of preference representation, i.e., embedding. We recast the problem of designing a good voting rule into one of learning probabilistic versions of voting rules that output distributions over a set of candidates. Specifically, we use neural networks to learn probabilistic social choice functions from the literature. We show that embeddings of preference profiles derived from the social choice literature allows us to learn existing voting rules more efficiently and scale to larger populations of voters more easily than other work if the embedding is tailored to the learning objective. Moreover, we show that rules learned using embeddings can be tweaked to create novel voting rules with improved axiomatic properties. Namely, we show that existing voting rules require only minor modification to combat a probabilistic version of the No Show Paradox.

The median $M$ of a graph $G$ is the set of vertices with a minimum total distance to all other vertices in the graph. In this paper, we determine the median of Sierpi\'{n}ski triangle graphs. Sierpi\'{n}ski triangle graphs, also known as Sierpi\'{n}ski gasket graphs of order $n$ are graphs formed by contracting all non-clique edges from the Sierpi\'{n}ski graphs of order ($n+1$).

Computer vision systems have witnessed rapid progress over the past two decades due to multiple advances in the field. As these systems are increasingly being deployed in high-stakes real-world applications, there is a dire need to ensure that they do not propagate or amplify any discriminatory tendencies in historical or human-curated data or inadvertently learn biases from spurious correlations. This paper presents a comprehensive survey on fairness that summarizes and sheds light on ongoing trends and successes in the context of computer vision. The topics we discuss include 1) The origin and technical definitions of fairness drawn from the wider fair machine learning literature and adjacent disciplines. 2) Work that sought to discover and analyze biases in computer vision systems. 3) A summary of methods proposed to mitigate bias in computer vision systems in recent years. 4) A comprehensive summary of resources and datasets produced by researchers to measure, analyze, and mitigate bias and enhance fairness. 5) Discussion of the field's success, continuing trends in the context of multimodal foundation and generative models, and gaps that still need to be addressed. The presented characterization should help researchers understand the importance of identifying and mitigating bias in computer vision and the state of the field and identify potential directions for future research., Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures
