Wearable technologies are attracting increasing attention in the materials science field, prompting a quest for active components with beneficial functional attributes whilst ensuring human and environmental safety. Hydrogels are highly biocompatible platforms with interesting mechanical properties, which can be exploited for the construction of strain sensors. In order to improve the directionality of their strain response and combine it with electrical properties to fabricate piezoresistive devices, it is possible to incorporate various types of nanofillers within the polymeric network of the hydrogels. 2D materials are ideal nanofillers thanks to their intrinsic two‐dimensional anisotropy and unique electronic properties. Herein, the covalent functionalization of 2D 1T‐MoS2 is exploited to build robust hybrid cross‐linked networks with a polyethylene glycol diacrylate gel (PEGDA). The conductivity of this nanocomposite is also further improved by inducing the interfacial polymerization of aniline. The resulting free‐standing samples demonstrate a linear and highly reversible piezoresistive response in a pressure range compatible with that of peripheral blood, while also featuring good compatibility with human skin cells, thereby making them interesting options for incorporation into wearable strain sensors.

Soft bio-mimetic robotics is a growing field of research that seeks to close the gap with animal robustness and adaptability where conventional robots fall short. The embedding of sensors with the capability to discriminate between different body deformation modes is a key technological challenge in soft robotics to enhance robot control–a difficult task for this type of systems with high degrees of freedom. The recently conceived Linear Repetitive Learning Estimation Scheme (LRLES)–to be included in the traditional Proportional–integral–derivative (PID) control–is proposed here as a way to compensate for uncertain dynamics on a soft swimming robot, which is actuated with soft pneumatic actuators and equipped with soft sensors providing proprioceptive information pertaining to lateral body caudal bending akin to a goniometer. The proposed controller is derived in detail and experimentally validated, with the experiment consisting of tracking a desired trajectory for the bending angle envelope while continuously oscillating with a constant frequency. The results are compared vis a vis those achieved with the traditional PID controller, finding that the PID endowed with the LRLES outperforms the PID controller (though the latter has been separately tuned) and experimentally validating the novel controller’s effectiveness, accuracy, and matching speed.

Inertial Measurement Units are present in several applications in aerospace, unmanned vehicle navigation, legged robots, and human motion tracking systems, due to their ability to estimate a body’s acceleration, orientation and angular rate. In contrast to rovers and drones, legged locomotion involves repeated impacts between the feet and the ground, and rapid locomotion (e.g., running) involves alternating stance and flight phases, resulting in substantial oscillations in vertical acceleration. The aim of this research is to investigate the effects of periodic low-acceleration impacts (4 g, 8 g and 16 g), which imitate the vertical motion of a running robot, on the attitude estimation of multiple Micro-Electromechanical Systems IMUs. The results reveal the presence of a significant drift in the attitude estimation of the sensors, which can provide important information during the design process of a robot (sensor selection), or during the control phase (e.g., the system will know that after a series of impacts the attitude estimations will be inaccurate).

Los hongos micorrícicos arbusculares (HMA) son simbiontes mutualistas asociados a la mayoría de las plantas terrestres. Las comunidades de HMA varían en composición y en historias de vida, y son afectadas por el uso y el manejo del suelo. Los bosques de caldén (Prosopis caldenia Burkart) de la provincia de San Luis han sufrido una reducción considerable de su superficie. Actualmente, sus relictos integran un paisaje compuesto por bosques y tierras cultivadas con Medicago sativa L. (alfalfa) y Eragrostis curvula (Schrad.) Nees (pasto llorón), dos especies forrajeras clave para la producción ganadera de la región. Dada la importancia ecológica y económica que tienen estos usos de suelo en la región, el objetivo de este trabajo fue analizar si la diversidad de los HMA es afectada por el cambio de uso de suelo del bosque de caldén a parcelas agrícolas de alfalfa o de pasto llorón, y si existen especies indicadoras para cada uso. Se establecieron 4 parcelas permanentes de bosques, 4 de alfalfa y 4 de pasto llorón. De cada parcela se recolectaron muestras de suelo, se les determinaron características fisicoquímicas y se les extrajeron las esporas de HMA. La composición de las comunidades de esporas fue diferente en cada uso de suelo. La riqueza de morfoespecies de esporas de HMA no mostró diferencias entre bosque y alfalfa, pero sí con pasto llorón. La abundancia total, la abundancia de esporas de especies ruderales y de estrés tolerantes fue significativamente mayor en alfalfas. Además, se identificaron 2 especies indicadoras en alfalfa, 1 en bosques y 2 en llorones. Este estudio provee evidencia que sugiere que el cambio de uso de suelo en el Caldenal altera de manera significativa la composición de las comunidades de esporas de HMA, lo cual puede afectar negativamente este bosque endémico.

Abstract Background Bladder cancer (BC) has the highest per-patient cost of all cancer types. Hence, we aim to develop a non-invasive, point-of-care tool for the diagnostic and molecular stratification of patients with BC based on combined microRNAs (miRNAs) and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) profiling of urine. Methods Next-generation sequencing of the whole miRNome and SERS profiling were performed on urine samples collected from 15 patients with BC and 16 control subjects (CTRLs). A retrospective cohort (BC = 66 and CTRL = 50) and RT-qPCR were used to confirm the selected differently expressed miRNAs. Diagnostic accuracy was assessed using machine learning algorithms (logistic regression, naïve Bayes, and random forest), which were trained to discriminate between BC and CTRL, using as input either miRNAs, SERS, or both. The molecular stratification of BC based on miRNA and SERS profiling was performed to discriminate between high-grade and low-grade tumors and between luminal and basal types. Results Combining SERS data with three differentially expressed miRNAs (miR-34a-5p, miR-205-3p, miR-210-3p) yielded an Area Under the Curve (AUC) of 0.92 ± 0.06 in discriminating between BC and CTRL, an accuracy which was superior either to miRNAs (AUC = 0.84 ± 0.03) or SERS data (AUC = 0.84 ± 0.05) individually. When evaluating the classification accuracy for luminal and basal BC, the combination of miRNAs and SERS profiling averaged an AUC of 0.95 ± 0.03 across the three machine learning algorithms, again better than miRNA (AUC = 0.89 ± 0.04) or SERS (AUC = 0.92 ± 0.05) individually, although SERS alone performed better in terms of classification accuracy. Conclusion miRNA profiling synergizes with SERS profiling for point-of-care diagnostic and molecular stratification of BC. By combining the two liquid biopsy methods, a clinically relevant tool that can aid BC patients is envisaged.

Abstract Background Erythropoiesis‐stimulating agents effectively improve the hemoglobin levels in a fraction of anemic patients with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). Higher doses (HD) of recombinant human erythropoietin (rhEPO) have been proposed to overcome suboptimal response rates observed in MDS patients treated with lower “standard doses” (SD) of rhEPO. However, a direct comparison between the different doses of rhEPO is lacking. Methods A cohort of 104 MDS patients treated with HD was retrospectively compared to 208 patients treated with SD in a propensity score‐matched analysis to evaluate hematological improvement‐erythroid (HI‐E) rate induced by the different doses of rhEPO. The impact of rhEPO doses on survival and progression to leukemia was also investigated. Results Overall HI‐E rate was 52.6%. No difference was observed between different rhEPO doses (P = .28) in matched cohorts; in a subgroup analysis, transfusion‐dependent patients and patients with higher IPSS‐R score obtained a higher HI‐E rate with HD, although without significant impact on overall survival (OS). Aim: to evaluate the performance of urinary fibrinogen β-chain (FBC) – either alone or associated with urinary tyrosine-phosphorylated proteins (UPY) – as bladder cancer (BCa) diagnostic biomarker. Materials & methods: 164 subjects were tested. Results: significantly different FBC and UPY levels were found between BCa patients and controls, as well as between low-grade and high-grade cancers. The diagnostic accuracy was 0.84 for FBC and 0.87 for UPY. The combination of FBC and UPY improved the accuracy to 0.91. The addition of clinical variables (age, gender, and smoking habit) to FBC and UPY into a model for BCa prediction significantly improved the accuracy to 0.99. The combination of FBC and UPY adjusted for clinical variables associates with the highest sensitivity and good specificity. Conclusion: urinary FBC and UPY could be used as biomarkers for BCa diagnosis.

Blood pressure (BP) is a heritable, quantitative trait with intraindividual variability and susceptibility to measurement error. Genetic studies of BP generally use single-visit measurements and thus cannot remove variability occurring over months or years. We leveraged the idea that averaging BP measured across time would improve phenotypic accuracy and thereby increase statistical power to detect genetic associations. We studied systolic BP (SBP), diastolic BP (DBP), mean arterial pressure (MAP), and pulse pressure (PP) averaged over multiple years in 46,629 individuals of European ancestry. We identified 39 trait-variant associations across 19 independent loci (p < 5 × 10(-8)); five associations (in four loci) uniquely identified by our LTA analyses included those of SBP and MAP at 2p23 (rs1275988, near KCNK3), DBP at 2q11.2 (rs7599598, in FER1L5), and PP at 6p21 (rs10948071, near CRIP3) and 7p13 (rs2949837, near IGFBP3). Replication analyses conducted in cohorts with single-visit BP data showed positive replication of associations and a nominal association (p < 0.05). We estimated a 20% gain in statistical power with long-term average (LTA) as compared to single-visit BP association studies. Using LTA analysis, we identified genetic loci influencing BP. LTA might be one way of increasing the power of genetic associations for continuous traits in extant samples for other phenotypes that are measured serially over time.

Intercalating molecules can significantly change the conformation of DNA. Here, the authors fabricated resonators fully composed of DNA forming bundles between microfabricated pillars to study the vibration property of the DNA bundles with/without intercalant molecules.

The necessity to improve in vitro cell screening assays is becoming ever more important. Pharmaceutical companies, research laboratories and hospitals require technologies that help to speed up conventional screening and therapeutic procedures to produce more data in a short time in a realistic and reliable manner. The design of new solutions for test biomaterials and active molecules is one of the urgent problems of preclinical screening and the limited correlation between in vitro and in vivo data remains one of the major issues. The establishment of the most suitable in vitro model provides reduction in times, costs and, last but not least, in the number of animal experiments as recommended by the 3Rs (replace, reduce, refine) ethical guiding principles for testing involving animals. Although two-dimensional (2D) traditional cell screening assays are generally cheap and practical to manage, they have strong limitations, as cells, within the transition from the three-dimensional (3D) in vivo to the 2D in vitro growth conditions, do not properly mimic the real morphologies and physiology of their native tissues. In the study of human pathologies, especially, animal experiments provide data closer to what happens in the target organ or apparatus, but they imply slow and costly procedures and they generally do not fully accomplish the 3Rs recommendations, i.e., the amount of laboratory animals and the stress that they undergo must be minimized. Microfluidic devices seem to offer different advantages in relation to the mentioned issues. This review aims to describe the critical issues connected with the conventional cells culture and screening procedures, showing what happens in the in vivo physiological micro and nano environment also from a physical point of view. During the discussion, some microfluidic tools and their components are described to explain how these devices can circumvent the actual limitations described in the introduction.

After the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, cases of SARSCoV- 2 infections may gradually decrease in the next months. Given the reduced prevalence of the disease, Emergency Departments (ED) are starting to receive more and more non- Covid19 patients. Thus, a way to quickly discriminate ED patients with potential Covid-19 infection from non-Covid19 patients is needed in order to keep potentially contagious patients isolated while awaiting second-level testing. In this paper, we present the derivation and validation of a simple, practical, and cheap score that could be helpful to rule out Covid-19 among ED patients with suspicious symptoms (fever and/or dyspnoea). The LCL score was derived from a cohort of 335 patients coming to the ED of our hospital from March 16th to April 1st, 2020. It was then retrospectively validated in a similar cohort of 173 patients admitted to our ED during April. The score is based on blood values of lactate dehydrogenase, C-reactive protein, and lymphocyte count. The LCL score performed well both in the derivation and in the validation cohort, with an AUC respectively of 0.81 (95% CI: 0.77 – 0.86) and of 0.71 (95% CI: 0.63 – 0.78), given the difference in Covid- 19 prevalence between the two cohorts (57% vs 41% respectively). An LCL score equal to 0 had a negative predictive value of 0.92 in the derivation cohort and of 0.81 in the validation cohort, with a negative likelihood ratio respectively of 0.08 and 0.36 for Covid- 19 exclusion. This score could, therefore, constitute a useful tool to help physicians manage patients in the ED.

In designing a new drug, considering the preferred route of administration, various requirements must be fulfilled. Active molecules pharmacokinetics should be reliable with a valuable drug profile as well as well-tolerated. Over the past 20 years, nanotechnologies have provided alternative and complementary solutions to those of an exclusively pharmaceutical chemical nature since scientists and clinicians invested in the optimization of materials and methods capable of regulating effective drug delivery at the nanometer scale. Among the many drug delivery carriers, lipid nano vesicular ones successfully support clinical candidates approaching such problems as insolubility, biodegradation, and difficulty in overcoming the skin and biological barriers such as the blood–brain one. In this review, the authors discussed the structure, the biochemical composition, and the drug delivery applications of lipid nanovesicular carriers, namely, niosomes, proniosomes, ethosomes, transferosomes, pharmacosomes, ufasomes, phytosomes, catanionic vesicles, and extracellular vesicles.

Superhydrophobic surfaces display an extraordinary repulsion to water and water-based solutions. This effect emerges from the interplay of intrinsic hydrophobicity of the surface and its morphology. These surfaces have been established for a long time and have been studied for decades. The increasing interest in recent years has been focused towards applications in many different fields and, in particular, biomedical applications. In this paper, we review the progress achieved in the last years in the fabrication of regularly patterned superhydrophobic surfaces in many different materials and their exploitation for the manipulation and characterization of biomaterial, with particular emphasis on the issues affecting the yields of the fabrication processes and the quality of the manufactured devices.

Objectives: Poor pain management is relevant among individuals unable to communicate verbally (UCV). Analgesia may be due to three determinants: patients' status, physician's characteristics and pain etiology. Our aim is to investigate the association between prescription of ED pain treatment and these determinants. Materials and Methods: An observational prospective study including UCV patients was conducted. Severity of pain was evaluated by ALGOPLUS Scale and a score P â¥Â 2 out of 5 on the pain scale was retained as the threshold for the presence of acute pain in elderly UCV patients. Results: Our data showed that only 31,9% of UCV patients received a pharmacological treatment. The presence of the caregiver would influence the rate of therapy administration [OR 6,19 (95% CI 2,6â14,75)]. The presence of leg pain [OR 0,32 (95% CI 0,12â0,86)] and head pain [OR 0,29 (95% CI 0,10â0,84)] were less likely associated to receive analgesia. Pain related to trauma [OR 4.82 (95% CI 1.17 to 19.78)] and youngest physicians [OR 1.08 (95% CI 1.001 to 1.18)] were variables associated with the administration of drugs opiates. Discussion: Older UCV patients presenting to the ED with pain are at high risk of inadequate analgesia. Providers should always suspect presence of pain and an increasing need for behavioural pain evaluation is necessary for a complete assessment. Conclusions: Presence of a caregiver influences a more appropriate pain management in these patients. Staff training on pain management could result in better assessment, treatment, and interaction with caregivers. Keywords: Emergency department, Pain, Oligoanalgesia

Density management diagrams are valuable tools for managing specific forest species. The aim of this study was to obtain a density management diagram for teak (Tectona grandis L.) plantations in the State of Tabasco in Mexico. To achieve this objective, a set of 10 plantations were studied, in which 42 plots were established. Two equations were fitted simultaneously, including one related to the quadratic mean diameter, stand density and dominant height and the other which related the total stand volume to the quadratic mean diameter, stand density and dominant height. The results showed that the diagram had an acceptable predictability, thus indicating its usefulness and accuracy in planning silvicultural interventions. This diagram is a very powerful tool that can enable stakeholders to manage teak plantations in the State of Tabasco.

El presente trabajo analiza las trayectorias de tres investigadores que actualmente se desempeñan en el Departamento de Farmacobiología del Cinvestav. Se trata de científicos consolidados en su área de desempeño, con líneas de investigación propias, que se desenvuelven como líderes de equipos y han alcanzado el máximo nivel en el SNI, pero que se diferencian entre sí por sus procedencias disciplinares, sus experiencias de formación en México y en el exterior y sus trayectorias familiares. Teniendo en cuenta tanto estas diferencias como su posición actual, resultó de sumo interés interrogar qué procesos y acontecimientos intervinieron en la conformación de estas trayectorias. El trabajo interpretativo sobre las entrevistas a profundidad realizadas y el análisis de los curriculum vitae permitió avanzar sobre algunas consideraciones preliminares analizando las formas habituales en que los investigadores racionalizan su práctica y permiten comprender el devenir científico como un proceso en el que intervienen dimensiones estructurales, contingentes y situacionales que modulan las trayectorias exitosas, y que no se reducen sólo a aquellas prácticas circunscriptas al laboratorio, a las habilidades estrictamente cognitivas y al conocimiento acumulativo.

Elevated blood pressure is a common, heritable cause of cardiovascular disease worldwide. To date, identification of common genetic variants influencing blood pressure has proven challenging. We tested 2.5 million genotyped and imputed SNPs for association with systolic and diastolic blood pressure in 34,433 subjects of European ancestry from the Global BPgen consortium and followed up findings with direct genotyping (N ≤ 71,225 European ancestry, N ≤ 12,889 Indian Asian ancestry) and in silico comparison (CHARGE consortium, N = 29,136). We identified association between systolic or diastolic blood pressure and common variants in eight regions near the CYP17A1 (P = 7 × 10(-24)), CYP1A2 (P = 1 × 10(-23)), FGF5 (P = 1 × 10(-21)), SH2B3 (P = 3 × 10(-18)), MTHFR (P = 2 × 10(-13)), c10orf107 (P = 1 × 10(-9)), ZNF652 (P = 5 × 10(-9)) and PLCD3 (P = 1 × 10(-8)) genes. All variants associated with continuous blood pressure were associated with dichotomous hypertension. These associations between common variants and blood pressure and hypertension offer mechanistic insights into the regulation of blood pressure and may point to novel targets for interventions to prevent cardiovascular disease.
