Abstract

In this paper, a parallel computing method is proposed to perform the background denoising and wheezing detection from a multi-channel recording captured during the auscultation process. The proposed system is based on a non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) approach and a detection strategy. Moreover, the initialization of the proposed model is based on singular value decomposition to avoid dependence on the initial values of the NMF parameters. Additionally, novel update rules to simultaneously address the multichannel denoising while preserving an orthogonal constraint to maximize source separation have been designed. The proposed system has been evaluated for the task of wheezing detection showing a significant improvement over state-of-the-art algorithms when noisy sound sources are present. Moreover, parallel and high-performance techniques have been used to speedup the execution of the proposed system, showing that it is possible to achieve fast execution times, which enables its implementation in real-world scenarios.

Abstract

The proposed system consists of a two-stage cascade. The first stage performs a rough heartbeat detection while the second stage refines the previous one, improving the temporal localization and also classifying the heartbeats into types S1 and S2. The first contribution is a novel approach that combines the dissimilarity matrix with the frame-level spectral divergence to locate heartbeats using the repetitiveness shown by the heart sounds and the temporal relationships between the intervals defined by the events S1/S2 and non-S1/S2 (systole and diastole). The second contribution is a verification-correction-classification process based on a sliding window that allows the preservation of the temporal structure of the cardiac cycle in order to be applied in the heart sound classification. The proposed method has been assessed using the open access databases PASCAL, CirCor DigiScope Phonocardiogram and an additional sound mixing procedure considering both Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) and different kinds of clinical ambient noises from a commercial database. The proposed method provides the best detection/classification performance in realistic scenarios where the presence of cardiac anomalies as well as different types of clinical environmental noises are active in the PCG signal. Of note, the promising modelling of the temporal structures of the heart provided by the dissimilarity matrix together with the frame-level spectral divergence, as well as the removal of a significant number of spurious heart events and recovery of missing heart events, both corrected by the proposed verification-correction-classification algorithm, suggest that our proposal is a successful tool to be applied in heart segmentation.

Abstract

The Near-Earth Asteroid (NEA) 2024 PT5 is on an Earth-like orbit which remained in Earth's immediate vicinity for several months at the end of 2024. PT5's orbit is challenging to populate with asteroids originating from the Main Belt and is more commonly associated with rocket bodies mistakenly identified as natural objects or with debris ejected from impacts on the Moon. We obtained visible and near-infrared reflectance spectra of PT5 with the Lowell Discovery Telescope and NASA Infrared Telescope Facility on 2024 August 16. The combined reflectance spectrum matches lunar samples but does not match any known asteroid types -- it is pyroxene-rich while asteroids of comparable spectral redness are olivine-rich. Moreover, the amount of solar radiation pressure observed on the PT5 trajectory is orders of magnitude lower than what would be expected for an artificial object. We therefore conclude that 2024 PT5 is ejecta from an impact on the Moon, thus making PT5 the second NEA suggested to be sourced from the surface of the Moon. While one object might be an outlier, two suggest that there is an underlying population to be characterized. Long-term predictions of the position of 2024 PT5 are challenging due to the slow Earth encounters characteristic of objects in these orbits. A population of near-Earth objects which are sourced by the Moon would be important to characterize for understanding how impacts work on our nearest neighbor and for identifying the source regions of asteroids and meteorites from this under-studied population of objects on very Earth-like orbits., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letters on December 13, 2024

Abstract

A search for $D^0$ meson decays to the $\pi^+\pi^-e^+e^-$ and $K^+K^-e^+e^-$ final states is reported using a sample of proton-proton collisions collected by the LHCb experiment at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb$^{-1}$. The decay $D^0 \rightarrow \pi^+\pi^-e^+e^-$ is observed for the first time when requiring that the two electrons are consistent with coming from the decay of a $\phi$ or $\rho^0/\omega$ meson. The corresponding branching fractions are measured relative to the $D^0 \rightarrow K^-\pi^-[e^+e^-]_{\rho^0/\omega}$ decay, where the two electrons are consistent with coming from the decay of a $\rho^0$ or $\omega$ meson. No evidence is found for the $D^0 \rightarrow K^+K^-e^+e^-$ decay and world-best limits are set on its branching fraction. 7. Liquidity Pools as Mean Field Games: A New Framework

Abstract

In this work, we present an innovative application of the probabilistic weak formulation of mean field games (MFG) for modeling liquidity pools in a constant product automated market maker (AMM) protocol in the context of decentralized finance. Our work extends one of the most conventional applications of MFG, which is the price impact model in an order book, by incorporating an AMM instead of a traditional order book. Through our approach, we achieve results that support the existence of solutions to the Mean Field Game and, additionally, the existence of approximate Nash equilibria for the proposed problem. These results not only offer a new perspective for representing liquidity pools in AMMs but also open promising opportunities for future research in this emerging field., Comment: 27 pages, 1 figure

8. Evaluating Pixel Language Models on Non-Standardized Languages

Abstract

We explore the potential of pixel-based models for transfer learning from standard languages to dialects. These models convert text into images that are divided into patches, enabling a continuous vocabulary representation that proves especially useful for out-of-vocabulary words common in dialectal data. Using German as a case study, we compare the performance of pixel-based models to token-based models across various syntactic and semantic tasks. Our results show that pixel-based models outperform token-based models in part-of-speech tagging, dependency parsing and intent detection for zero-shot dialect evaluation by up to 26 percentage points in some scenarios, though not in Standard German. However, pixel-based models fall short in topic classification. These findings emphasize the potential of pixel-based models for handling dialectal data, though further research should be conducted to assess their effectiveness in various linguistic contexts., Comment: Accepted at COLING 2025

9. The Spin-Orbit Alignment of 8 Warm Gas Giant Systems

Abstract

Essential information about the formation and evolution of planetary systems can be found in their architectures -- in particular, in stellar obliquity ($\psi$) -- as they serve as a signature of their dynamical evolution. Here, we present ESPRESSO observations of the Rossiter-Mclaughlin (RM) effect of 8 warm gas giants, revealing that independent of the eccentricities, all of them have relatively aligned orbits. Our 5 warm Jupiters -- WASP-106 b, WASP-130 b, TOI-558 b, TOI-4515 b, and TOI-5027 b -- have sky-projected obliquities $|\lambda|\simeq0-10$ deg while the 2 less massive warm Saturns -- K2-139 b and K2-329 A b -- are slightly misaligned having $|\lambda|\simeq15-25$ deg. Furthermore, for K2-139 b, K2-329 A b, and TOI-4515 b, we also measure true 3D obliquities $\psi\simeq15-30$ deg. We also report a non-detection of the RM effect produced by TOI-2179 b. Through hierarchical Bayesian modeling of the true 3D obliquities of hot and warm Jupiters, we find that around single stars, warm Jupiters are statistically more aligned than hot Jupiters. Independent of eccentricities, 95\% of the warm Jupiters have $\psi\lesssim30$ deg with no misaligned planets, while hot Jupiters show an almost isotropic distribution of misaligned systems. This implies that around single stars, warm Jupiters form in primordially aligned protoplanetary disks and subsequently evolve in a more quiescent way than hot Jupiters. Finally, we find that Saturns may have slightly more misaligned orbits than warm Jupiters, but more obliquity measurements are necessary to be conclusive., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures. Abstract

Low-mass X-ray binaries with a neutron star as the primary object show a complex array of phenomenology during outbursts. The observed variability in X-ray emission primarily arises from changes in the innermost regions of the accretion disk, neutron star surface, and corona. In this work, we present the results of a comprehensive X-ray spectral and timing analysis of the neutron star transient MAXI J1807+132 during its 2023 outburst using data from the NICER observatory. The outburst is marked by a very rapid rise in the count rate by about a factor of 20 in a day. The source undergoes full state transitions and displays hysteresis effect in the hardness and rms intensity diagrams. Spectral analysis with a three-component model is consistent with disk truncation during the hard states and reaching the last stable orbit during the intermediate and soft states. We discuss the different values of the last stable radius in the context of possible distance of the source and magnetic field strength. The characteristic frequencies throughout the hard and intermediate states are found to be strongly correlated with the inner radius of the disk. Together with the spectral and fast variability properties, we attempt to trace the evolution of the size of the corona along the outburst. Following the main outburst, the source undergoes a high amplitude reflare wherein it shows a complex behavior with relatively high variability (10 %), but low hardness., Comment: ApJ (in press)

Abstract

We report the discovery and characterisation of a Lya blob close to a galaxy at redshift z=3.49. We present our analysis to check whether the companion galaxy could be the source of the ionised photons responsible for the Lya emission from the blob. We use images obtained from the 10.4 m GTC telescope that are part of the SHARDS project. The blob is only visible in the F551W17 filter, centred around the Lya line at the redshift of the galaxy. We measure the luminosity of the blob with a two-step procedure. First, we describe the radial surface brightness (SB) profile of the galaxy using a Sersic function. We then remove this model from the SB profile of the blob and measure the luminosity of the blob alone. We also estimate the Lya continuum of the galaxy using an ACS image from the HST in the filter F606W, that is wider than the SHARDS one and centred at about the same wavelength. In this image the galaxy is visible, but the blob is not detected, since its Lya emission is diluted in the larger wavelength range of the F606W filter. We find that the Lya luminosity of the blob is 1.0x1043 erg s-1, in agreement with other Lya blobs reported in the literature. The luminosity of the galaxy in the same filter is 2.9x1042 erg s-1. The luminosity within the HST/ACS image is Lcont=1.1x1043 erg s-1. With these values we are able to estimate the Lya equivalent width (EW), that is found to be 111 {\AA} (rest-frame). This value suggests that a super-cluster of massive (1-2x107 Msun) and young (2-4 Myr) stars could be responsible for the ionisation of the blob. We also use two other methods to estimate the luminosity of the galaxy and the blob, both supporting our conclusions. It is worth noting that the Lya blob is spatially decoupled from the galaxy by 5.7 kpc. This misalignment could suggest the presence of an ionised cone of escaping material, as found in nearby galaxies such as M82., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, and 1 table. 12. Robustness of longitudinal transmon readout to ionization

Abstract

Multi-photon processes deteriorate the quantum non-demolition (QND) character of the dispersive readout in circuit QED, causing readout to lag behind single and two-qubit gates, in both speed and fidelity. Alternative methods such as the longitudinal readout have been proposed, however, it is unknown to what extent multi-photon processes hinder this approach. Here we investigate the QND character of the longitudinal readout of the transmon qubit. We show that the deleterious effects that arise due to multi-photon transitions can be heavily suppressed with detuning, owing to the fact that the longitudinal interaction strength is independent of the transmon-resonator detuning. We consider the effect of circuit disorder, the selection rules that act on the transmon, as well as the description of longitudinal readout in the classical limit of the transmon to show qualitatively that longitudinal readout is robust. We show that fast, high-fidelity QND readout of transmon qubits is possible with longitudinal coupling.

13. Rate Optimization for RIS-Aided mMTC Networks in the Finite Blocklength Regime

Abstract

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have become a promising candidate for the development of future mobile systems. In the context of massive machine-type communications (mMTC), a RIS can be used to support the transmission from a group of sensors to a collector node. Due to the short data packets, we focus on the design of the RIS for maximizing the weighted sum and minimum rates in the finite blocklength regime. Under the assumption of non-orthogonal multiple access, successive interference cancelation is considered as a decoding scheme to mitigate interference. Accordingly, we formulate the optimizations as non-convex problems and propose two sub-optimal solutions based on gradient ascent (GA) and sequential optimization (SO) with semi-definite relaxation (SDR). In the GA, we distinguish between Euclidean and Riemannian gradients. For the SO, we derive a concave lower bound for the throughput and maximize it sequentially applying SDR. Numerical results show that the SO can outperform the GA and that strategies relying on the optimization of the classical Shannon capacity might be inadequate for mMTC networks., Comment: Paper accepted to be published at IEEE Communications Letters

Abstract

A recent report on the detection of very-high-energy gamma rays from V4641 Sagittarii (V4641 Sgr) up to ~0.8 peta-electronvolt has made it the second confirmed "PeVatron" microquasar. Here we report on the observation of V4641 Sgr with X-Ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission (XRISM) in September 2024. Thanks to the large field of view and low background, the CCD imager Xtend successfully detected for the first time X-ray extended emission around V4641 Sgr with a significance of > 4.5 sigma and > 10 sigma based on our imaging and spectral analysis, respectively. The spatial extent is estimated to have a radius of $7 \pm 3$ arcmin ($13 \pm 5$ pc at a distance of 6.2 kpc) assuming a Gaussian-like radial distribution, which suggests that the particle acceleration site is within ~10 pc of the microquasar. If the X-ray morphology traces the diffusion of accelerated electrons, this spatial extent can be explained by either an enhanced magnetic field (~80 uG) or a suppressed diffusion coefficient (~$10^{27}$ cm$^2$ s$^{-1}$ at 100 TeV). The integrated X-ray flux, (4-6)$\times 10^{-12}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ (2-10 keV), would require a magnetic field strength higher than the galactic mean (> 8 uG) if the diffuse X-ray emission originates from synchrotron radiation and the gamma-ray emission is predominantly hadronic. If the X-rays are of thermal origin, the measured extension, temperature, and plasma density can be explained by a jet with a luminosity of ~$2\times 10^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$, which is comparable to the Eddington luminosity of this system., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

Abstract

The molecular Kennicutt-Schmidt (mK-S) Law has been key for understanding star formation (SF) in galaxies across all redshifts. However, recent sub-kpc observations of nearby galaxies reveal deviations from the nearly unity slope (N) obtained with disk-averaged measurements. We study SF and molecular gas (MG) distribution in the early-stage luminous infrared galaxy merger Arp240 (NGC5257-8). Using VLA radio continuum (RC) and ALMA CO(2-1) observations with a uniform grid analysis, we estimate SF rates and MG surface densities ($\Sigma_{\mathrm{SFR}}$ and $\Sigma_{\mathrm{H_2}}$, respectively). In Arp 240, N is sub-linear at 0.52 $\pm$ 0.17. For NGC 5257 and NGC 5258, N is 0.52 $\pm$ 0.16 and 0.75 $\pm$ 0.15, respectively. We identify two SF regimes: high surface brightness (HSB) regions in RC with N $\sim$1, and low surface brightness (LSB) regions with shallow N (ranging 0.15 $\pm$ 0.09 to 0.48 $\pm$ 0.04). Median CO(2-1) linewidth and MG turbulent pressure (P$_{\mathrm{turb}}$) are 25 km s$^{-1}$ and 9 $\times$10$^{5}$ K cm$^{-3}$. No significant correlation was found between $\Sigma_{\mathrm{SFR}}$ and CO(2-1) linewidth. However, $\Sigma_{\mathrm{SFR}}$ correlates with P$_{\mathrm{turb}}$, particularly in HSB regions ($\rho >$0.60). In contrast, SF efficiency moderately anti-correlates with P$_{\mathrm{turb}}$ in LSB regions but shows no correlation in HSB regions. Additionally, we identify regions where peaks in SF and MG are decoupled, yielding a shallow N ($\leq$ 0.28 $\pm$ 0.18). Overall, the range of N reflects distinct physical properties and distribution of both the SF and MG, which can be masked by disk-averaged measurements.

Abstract

The entanglement of electronic spin and orbital degrees of freedom is often the precursor to emergent behaviors in condensed matter systems. With considerable spin-orbit coupling strength, the cobalt atom on a honeycomb lattice offers a platform that can make accessible the study of novel magnetic ground states. Using temperature-dependent Raman spectroscopy and high-magnetic field Raman and infrared (IR) spectroscopy, we studied the lattice and spin-orbital excitations in CoTiO$_3$, an antiferromagnetic material that exhibits topologically protected magnon Dirac crossings in the Brillouin zone. Under the application of an external magnetic field up to 22 T along the crystal's $c$-axis, we observed the splitting of both the spin-orbital excitations and a phonon nearby in energy. Using density functional theory (DFT), we identify a number of new modes that below the antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition become Raman-active due to the zone-folding of the Brillouin zone caused by the doubling of the magnetic unit cell. We use a model that includes both the spin and orbital degrees of freedom of the Co$^{2+}$ ions to explain the spin-orbital excitation energies and their behavior in an applied field. Our experimental observations along with several deviations from the model behavior point to significant coupling between the spin-orbital and the lattice excitations.

17. Approximations of the Aggregated Interference Statistics for Outage Analysis in Massive MTC

Abstract

This paper presents several analytic closed-form approximations of the aggregated interference statistics within the framework of uplink massive machine-type communications (mMTC), taking into account the random activity of the sensors. Given its discrete nature and the large number of devices involved, a continuous approximation based on the Gram--Charlier series expansion of a truncated Gaussian kernel is proposed. We use this approximation to derive an analytic closed-form expression for the outage probability, corresponding to the event of the signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio being below a detection threshold. This metric is useful since it can be used for evaluating the performance of mMTC systems. We analyze, as an illustrative application of the previous approximation, a scenario with several multi-antenna collector nodes, each equipped with a set of predefined spatial beams. We consider two setups, namely single- and multiple-resource, in reference to the number of resources that are allocated to each beam. A graph-based approach that minimizes the average outage probability, and that is based on the statistics approximation, is used as allocation strategy. Finally, we describe an access protocol where the resource identifiers are broadcast (distributed) through the beams. Abstract

Machine-type communications (MTC) are crucial in the evolution of mobile communication systems. Within this context, we distinguish the so-called massive MTC (mMTC), where a large number of devices coexist in the same geographical area. In the case of sensors, a high correlation in the collected information is expected. In this letter, we evaluate the impact of correlation on the entropy of a set of quantized Gaussian sources. This model allows us to express the sensed data with the data correlation matrix. Given the nature of mMTC, these matrices may be well approximated as rank deficient. Accordingly, we exploit this singularity to design a technique for switching off several sensors that maximizes the entropy under power-related constraints. Abstract

This paper presents an estimation approach within the framework of uplink massive machine-type communications (mMTC) that considers the energy limitations of the devices. We focus on a scenario where a group of sensors observe a set of parameters and send the measured information to a collector node (CN). The CN is responsible for estimating the original observations, which are spatially correlated and corrupted by measurement and quantization noise. Given the use of Gaussian sources, the minimum mean squared error (MSE) estimation is employed and, when considering temporal evolution, the use of Kalman filters is studied. Based on that, we propose a device selection strategy to reduce the number of active sensors and a quantization scheme with adjustable number of bits to minimize the overall payload. The set of selected sensors and quantization levels are, thus, designed to minimize the MSE. For a more realistic analysis, communication errors are also included by averaging the MSE over the error decoding probabilities. We evaluate the performance of our strategy in a practical mMTC system with synthetic and real databases. Abstract

The opaque nature of transformer-based models, particularly in applications susceptible to unethical practices such as dark-patterns in user interfaces, requires models that integrate uncertainty quantification to enhance trust in predictions. This study focuses on dark-pattern detection, deceptive design choices that manipulate user decisions, undermining autonomy and consent. We propose a differential fine-tuning approach implemented at the final classification head via uncertainty quantification with transformer-based pre-trained models. Employing a dense neural network (DNN) head architecture as a baseline, we examine two methods capable of quantifying uncertainty: Spectral-normalized Neural Gaussian Processes (SNGPs) and Bayesian Neural Networks (BNNs). These methods are evaluated on a set of open-source foundational models across multiple dimensions: model performance, variance in certainty of predictions and environmental impact during training and inference phases. Results demonstrate that integrating uncertainty quantification maintains performance while providing insights into challenging instances within the models. Moreover, the study reveals that the environmental impact does not uniformly increase with the incorporation of uncertainty quantification techniques. The study's findings demonstrate that uncertainty quantification enhances transparency and provides measurable confidence in predictions, improving the explainability and clarity of black-box models. This facilitates informed decision-making and mitigates the influence of dark-patterns on user interfaces. These results highlight the importance of incorporating uncertainty quantification techniques in developing machine learning models, particularly in domains where interpretability and trustworthiness are critical.

21. Interaction of jamitons in second-order macroscopic traffic models

Abstract

Jamitons are self-sustained traveling wave solutions that arise in certain second-order macroscopic models of vehicular traffic. A necessary condition for a jamiton to appear is that the local traffic density breaks the so-called sub-characteristic condition. This condition states that the characteristic velocity of the corresponding first-order Lighthill-Whitham-Richards (LWR) model formed with the same desired speed function is enclosed by the characteristic speeds of the corresponding second-order model. The phenomenon of collision of jamitons in second-order models of traffic flow is studied analytically and numerically for the particular case of the second-order Aw-Rascle-Zhang (ARZ) traffic model [A.\ Aw, M.\ Rascle, {\it SIAM J.\ Appl.\ Math.} {\bf 60} (2000) 916--938; H.\ M.\ Zhang, {\it Transp.\ Res.\ B} {\bf 36} (2002) 275--290]. A compatibility condition is first defined to select jamitons that can collide each other. The collision of jamitons produces a new jamiton with a velocity different from the initial ones. It is observed that the exit velocities smooth out the velocity of the test jamiton and the initial velocities of the jamitons that collide. Other properties such as the amplitude of the exit jamitons, lengths, and maximum density are also explored.In the cases of the amplitude and maximum exit density it turns out that over a wide range of sonic densities, the exit values exceed or equal the input values. On the other hand, the resulting jamiton has a greater length than the incoming ones. Finally, the behavior for various driver reaction times is explored. It is obtained that some properties do not depend on that time, such as the amplitude, exit velocity, or maximum density, while the exit length does depend on driver reaction time.

Abstract

In this article, we propose a modified nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation for modeling pulse propagation in optical waveguides. The proposed model bifurcates into a system of elliptic and hyperbolic equations depending on waveguide parameters. The proposed model leads to a stable first-order system of equations, distinguishing itself from the canonical nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation. We have employed the space-time discontinuous Petrov-Galerkin finite element method to discretize the first-order system of equations. We present a stability analysis for both the elliptic and hyperbolic systems of equations and demonstrate the stability of the proposed model through several numerical examples on space-time meshes.

Abstract

Multi-Access Point Coordination (MAPC) and Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) are expected to be key features in future Wi-Fi, such as the forthcoming IEEE 802.11bn (Wi-Fi 8) and beyond. In this paper, we explore a coordinated solution based on online learning to drive the optimization of Spatial Reuse (SR), a method that allows multiple devices to perform simultaneous transmissions by controlling interference through Packet Detect (PD) adjustment and transmit power control. In particular, we focus on a Multi-Agent Multi-Armed Bandit (MA-MAB) setting, where multiple decision-making agents concurrently configure SR parameters from coexisting networks by leveraging the MAPC framework, and study various algorithms and reward-sharing mechanisms. We evaluate different MA-MAB implementations using Komondor, a well-adopted Wi-Fi simulator, and demonstrate that AI-native SR enabled by coordinated MABs can improve the network performance over current Wi-Fi operation: mean throughput increases by 15%, fairness is improved by increasing the minimum throughput across the network by 210%, while the maximum access delay is kept below 3 ms.

Abstract

The employment of stochastic geometry for the analysis and design of ultra dense networks (UDNs) has provided significant insights into network densification. In addition to the characterization of the network performance and behavior, these tools can also be exploited toward solving complex optimization problems that could maximize the capacity benefits arising in UDNs. However, this is preconditioned on the existence of tractable closed form expressions for the considered figures of merit. In this course, the present paper introduces an accurate approximation for the moment generating function (MGF) of the aggregate other-cell interference created by base stations whose positions follow a Poisson point process of given spatial density. Given the pivotal role of the MGF of the aggregate interference in stochastic geometry and the tractability of the derived MGF, the latter can be employed to substantially simplify ensuing stochastic geometry analyses. Subsequently, the present paper employs the introduced MGF to provide closed form expressions for the downlink ergodic capacity for the interference limited case, and validates the accuracy of these expressions by the use of extensive Monte Carlo simulations. Abstract

In this paper, we address the design of multi-user multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) precoders for indoor visible light communication (VLC) systems. The goal is to minimize the transmitted optical power per light emitting diode (LED) under imperfect channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter side. Robust precoders for imperfect CSI available in the literature include noisy and outdated channel estimation cases. However, to the best of our knowledge, no work has considered adding robustness against channel quantization. In this paper, we fill this gap by addressing the case of imperfect CSI due to the quantization of VLC channels. We model the quantization errors in the CSI through polyhedric uncertainty regions. For polyhedric uncertainty regions and positive real channels, as is the case of VLC channels, we show that the robust precoder against channel quantization errors that minimizes the transmitted optical power while guaranteeing a target signal to noise plus interference ratio (SNIR) per user is the solution of a second order cone programming (SOCP) problem. Abstract

Cluster cosmology can benefit from combining multi-wavelength studies, which can benefit from characterising the correlation coefficients between different mass-observable relations. In this work, we aim to provide information on the scatter, the skewness, and the covariance of various mass-observable relations in galaxy clusters in cosmological hydrodynamic simulations. This information will help future analyses to better tackle accretion histories and projection effects and model mass observable relations for cosmology studies.We identify galaxy clusters in Magneticum Box2b simulations with mass $M_{\rm 200c}>10^{14} {\rm M}_\odot$ at redshift $z=0.24$ and $z=0.90$. Our analysis includes \Euclid-derived properties such as richness, stellar mass, lensing mass, and concentration. Additionally, we investigate complementary multi-wavelength data, including X-ray luminosity, integrated Compton-$y$ parameter, gas mass, and temperature. The impact of projection effects on mass-observable residuals and correlations is then examined. At intermediate redshift ($z=0.24$), projection effects impact lensing concentration, richness, and gas mass the most in terms of scatter and skewness of log-residuals of scaling relations. The contribution of projection effects can be significant enough to boost a spurious hot- vs. cold-baryons correlation and consequently hide underlying correlations due to halo accretion histories. At high redshift ($z=0.9$), the richness has a much lower scatter (of log-residuals), and the quantity that is most impacted by projection effects is the lensing mass. Abstract

An amplitude analysis of $B^-\rightarrow D^- D^0 K_\mathrm{S}^0$ decays is performed using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $9\,\text{fb}^{-1}$, collected with the LHCb detector at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13$\mathrm{\,Te\kern -0.1em V}$. A resonant structure of spin-parity $0^+$ is observed in the $D^0 K_\mathrm{S}^0$ invariant-mass spectrum with a significance of $5.3\,\sigma$. The mass and width of the state, modeled with a Breit$-$Wigner lineshape, are determined to be $2883\pm11\pm6\mathrm{\,Me\kern -0.1em V\!/}c^2$ and $87_{-47}^{+22}\pm6\mathrm{\,Me\kern -0.1em V}$ respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. These properties and the quark content are consistent with those of the open-charm tetraquark state $T_{cs 0}^{*}(2870)^0$ observed previously in the $D^+ K^-$ final state of the $B^-\rightarrow D^- D^+ K^-$ decay. This result confirms the existence of the $T_{cs 0}^{*}(2870)^0$ state in a new decay mode. The $T_{cs1}^{*}(2900)^0$ state, reported in the $B^-\rightarrow D^- D^+ K^-$ decay, is also searched for in the $D^0 K_\mathrm{S}^0$ invariant-mass spectrum of the $B^- \rightarrow D^- D^0 K_\mathrm{S}^0$ decay, without finding evidence for it., Comment: All figures and tables, along with machine-readable versions and any supplementary material and information, are available at https://lbfence.cern.ch/alcm/public/analysis/full-details/3162/ (LHCb public pages)

Abstract

Reconstruction of the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) signal has been a standard procedure in BAO analyses over the past decade and has helped to improve the BAO parameter precision by a factor of ~2 on average. The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) BAO analysis for the first year (DR1) data uses the ``standard'' reconstruction framework, in which the displacement field is estimated from the observed density field by solving the linearized continuity equation in redshift space, and galaxy and random positions are shifted in order to partially remove nonlinearities. There are several approaches to solving for the displacement field in real survey data, including the multigrid (MG), iterative Fast Fourier Transform (iFFT), and iterative Fast Fourier Transform particle (iFFTP) algorithms. In this work, we analyze these algorithms and compare them with various metrics including two-point statistics and the displacement itself using realistic DESI mocks. We focus on three representative DESI samples, the emission line galaxies (ELG), quasars (QSO), and the bright galaxy sample (BGS), which cover the extreme redshifts and number densities, and potential wide-angle effects. We conclude that the MG and iFFT algorithms agree within 0.4% in post-reconstruction power spectrum on BAO scales with the RecSym convention, which does not remove large-scale redshift space distortions (RSDs), in all three tracers. The RecSym convention appears to be less sensitive to displacement errors than the RecIso convention, which attempts to remove large-scale RSDs. However, iFFTP deviates from the first two; thus, we recommend against using iFFTP without further development. In addition, we provide the optimal settings for reconstruction for five years of DESI observation. Abstract

We investigate the geometric foundations of the space of geometric Goppa codes using the Tsfasman-Vladut H-construction. These codes are constructed from level structures, which extend the classical Goppa framework by incorporating invertible sheaves and trivializations. A key contribution is the definition of the Goppa morphism, a map from the moduli space of level structures, denoted $LS_{g,n,d}$, to the Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}(k,n)$. This morphism allows problems related to distinguishing attacks and key recovery in the context of geometric Goppa codes to be translated into a geometric language, addressing questions about the equations defining the image of the Goppa morphism and its fibers. Furthermore, we identify the ranges of the degree parameter $d$ that should be avoided to maintain security against distinguishers. Our results, valid over arbitrary base fields, also apply to convolutional Goppa codes.

Abstract

The measurement of scalar products between two vectors is a common task in scientific computing and, by extension, in quantum computing. In this work, we introduce two alternative quantum circuits for computing scalar products with phase information, combining the structure of the swap test, the vacuum test, and the Hadamard test. These novel frameworks, called the zero-control and one-control tests, present different trade-offs between circuit depth and qubit count for accessing the scalar product between two quantum states. We demonstrate that our approach significantly reduces the gate count for large numbers of qubits and decreases the scaling of quantum requirements compared to the Hadamard test.

Abstract

Red Supergiants (RSGs) are cool, evolved massive stars in their final evolutionary stage before exploding as a supernova. However, the evolution and fate of the most luminous RSGs is uncertain. Observational evidence for luminous warm, post-RSG objects and the lack of luminous RSGs as supernova progenitors suggest a blueward evolution. In this work, we analyze WOH G64, considered since the 1980s as the most extreme RSG in the Large Magellanic Cloud in terms of its size, luminosity, and mass-loss rate. Time-series photometry over the last 30 years reveals a sudden, yet smooth change from semi-regular to irregular variability in 2014. Multi-epoch optical spectroscopy confirms the transition, as WOH~G64 now exhibits properties of a B[e] star in the optical, and warm-star features in the near-infrared. We discovered that WOH G64 is a rare, massive symbiotic system formed by a RSG, which transitioned to a Yellow Hypergiant, and a B-star companion. The dramatic transition can be explained by: a) binary interactions partially stripping the envelope, b) the return of WOH G64 to a quiescent state after an outstanding eruption exceeding 30 years, and c) the expulsion of its outer layers due to a pre-SN superwind phase, indicating its imminent explosion. Abstract

We show that the use of 1,3-diaminopropane (DAP) as a chemical modifier at the perovskite/electron-transport layer (ETL) interface enhances the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 1.7 eV bandgap FACs mixed-halide perovskite single-junction cells, primarily by boosting the open-circuit voltage (VOC) from 1.06 V to 1.15 V. Adding a post-processing annealing step after C60 evaporation, further improves the fill factor (FF) by 20% from the control to the DAP + post-annealing devices. Using hyperspectral photoluminescence microscopy, we demonstrate that annealing helps improve compositional homogeneity at the top and bottom interfaces of the solar cell, which prevents detrimental bandgap pinning in the devices and improves C60 adhesion. Using time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry, we show that DAP reacts with formamidinium present near the surface of the perovskite lattice to form a larger molecular cation, 1,4,5,6-tetrahydropyrimidinium (THP) that remains at the interface. Combining the use of DAP and the annealing of C60 interface, we fabricate Si-perovskite tandems with PCE of 25.29%, compared to 23.26% for control devices. Our study underscores the critical role of chemical reactivity and thermal post-processing of the C60/Lewis-base passivator interface in minimizing device losses and advancing solar-cell performance of wide-bandgap mixed-cation mixed-halide perovskite for tandem application.

Abstract

Observable convolutional codes defined over Zpr with the Predictable Degree Property admits minimal input state output representations that behaves well under restriction of scalars. We make use of this fact to present Rosenthal's decoding algorithm for these convolutional codes. When combined with the Greferath-Vellbinger algorithm and a modified version of the Torrecillas-Lobillo-Navarro algorithm, the decoding problem reduces to selecting two decoding algorithms for linear block codes over a field. Finally, we analyze both the theoretical and practical error-correction capabilities of the combined algorithm

Abstract

White Matter Hyperintensities (WMH) are key neuroradiological markers of small vessel disease present in brain MRI. Assessment of WMH is important in research and clinics. However, WMH are challenging to segment due to their high variability in shape, location, size, poorly defined borders, and similar intensity profile to other pathologies (e.g stroke lesions) and artefacts (e.g head motion). In this work, we apply the most effective techniques for uncertainty quantification (UQ) in segmentation to the WMH segmentation task across multiple test-time data distributions. We find a combination of Stochastic Segmentation Networks with Deep Ensembles yields the highest Dice and lowest Absolute Volume Difference % (AVD) score on in-domain and out-of-distribution data. We demonstrate the downstream utility of UQ, proposing a novel method for classification of the clinical Fazekas score using spatial features extracted for WMH segmentation and UQ maps. We show that incorporating WMH uncertainty information improves Fazekas classification performance and calibration, with median class balanced accuracy for classification models with (UQ and spatial WMH features)/(spatial WMH features)/(WMH volume only) of 0.71/0.66/0.60 in the Deep WMH and 0.82/0.77/0.73 in the Periventricular WMH regions respectively. We demonstrate that stochastic UQ techniques with high sample diversity can improve the detection of poor quality segmentations. Finally, we qualitatively analyse the semantic information captured by UQ techniques and demonstrate that uncertainty can highlight areas where there is ambiguity between WMH and stroke lesions, while identifying clusters of small WMH in deep white matter unsegmented by the model., Comment: 34 pages (or 22 not including appendix) 26 figures (or 11 not including appendix)

39. On the Generalization of Handwritten Text Recognition Models

Abstract

Recent advances in Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR) have led to significant reductions in transcription errors on standard benchmarks under the i.i.d. assumption, thus focusing on minimizing in-distribution (ID) errors. However, this assumption does not hold in real-world applications, which has motivated HTR research to explore Transfer Learning and Domain Adaptation techniques. In this work, we investigate the unaddressed limitations of HTR models in generalizing to out-of-distribution (OOD) data. We adopt the challenging setting of Domain Generalization, where models are expected to generalize to OOD data without any prior access. To this end, we analyze 336 OOD cases from eight state-of-the-art HTR models across seven widely used datasets, spanning five languages. Additionally, we study how HTR models leverage synthetic data to generalize. We reveal that the most significant factor for generalization lies in the textual divergence between domains, followed by visual divergence. We demonstrate that the error of HTR models in OOD scenarios can be reliably estimated, with discrepancies falling below 10 points in 70\% of cases. We identify the underlying limitations of HTR models, laying the foundation for future research to address this challenge.

Abstract

We investigate a variation of the classical voter model in which the set of influencing agents depends on an individual's current opinion. The initial population consists of a random sample of equally sized subpopulations for each state, and two types of interactions are considered: (i) direct neighbors, and (ii) second neighbors (friends of direct neighbors, excluding the direct neighbors themselves). The neighborhood size, reflecting regular network connectivity, is kept constant across all agents. Our findings reveal that varying the interaction range introduces asymmetries that influence the probability of consensus and convergence time. At low connectivity, direct neighbor interactions dominate, driving consensus. As connectivity increases, the probability of consensus for either state becomes equal, mirroring symmetric dynamics. Asymmetry is also reflected in convergence time: while symmetric cases show decreasing times with increased connectivity, asymmetric cases exhibit an almost linear increase. The introduction of stubborn agents further accentuates these effects, particularly when they favor the less dominant state, significantly increasing consensus time. Abstract

The mean free path of ionizing photons for neutral hydrogen ($\lambda_\mathrm{mfp}^{912}$) is a crucial quantity in modelling the ionization state of the intergalactic medium (IGM) and the extragalactic ultraviolet background (EUVB), and is widely used in hydrodynamical simulations of galaxies and reionization. We construct the largest quasar spectrum dataset to date -- 12,595 $\mathrm{S/N}>3$ spectra -- using the Y1 observation of Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) to make the most precise model-independent measurement of the mean free path at $3.2\leq z\leq 4.6$. By stacking the spectra in 17 redshift bins and modelling the Lyman continuum profile, we get a redshift evolution $\lambda_\mathrm{mfp}^{912}\propto(1+z)^{-4.27}$ at $2\leq z\leq 5$, which is much shallower than previous estimates. We then explore the sources of systematic bias, including the choice of intrinsic quasar continuum, the consideration of Lyman series opacity and Lyman limit opacity evolution and the definition of $\lambda_\mathrm{mfp}^{912}$. Combining our results with estimates of $\lambda_\mathrm{mfp}^{912}$ at higher redshifts, we conclude at high confidence that the evolution in $\lambda_\mathrm{mfp}^{912}$ steepens at $z \approx 5$. We interpret this inflection as the transition from the end of HI reionization to a fully ionized plasma which characterizes the intergalactic medium of the past $\sim10$ billion years., Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures, submitted to ApJL. Abstract

A study of $\it{\Lambda}_{\it{b}}^\rm{0}$ and $\it{\Xi}_{\it{b}}^\rm{0}$ decays to $\it{\Lambda} h^{+} h^{\prime -}$ $(h^{(\prime)}=\pi, K)$ is performed using $pp$ collision data collected by the LHCb experiment during LHC Runs 1$-$2, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $9~\rm{fb}^{-1}$. The branching fractions for these decays are measured using the $\it{\Lambda}_{\it{b}}^\rm{0}\to\it{\Lambda}_{\it{c}}^+(\to\it{\Lambda}\pi^+)\pi^-$ decay as control channel. The decays $\it{\Lambda}_{\it{b}}^\rm{0}\to\it{\Lambda}\pi^+\pi^-$ and $\it{\Xi}_{\it{b}}^\rm{0}\to\it{\Lambda}K^-\pi^+$ are observed for the first time. For decay modes with sufficient signal yields, $CP$ asymmetries are measured in the full and localized regions of the final-state phase space. Evidence is found for $CP$ violation in the $\it{\Lambda}_{\it{b}}^\rm{0}\to\it{\Lambda}K^+K^-$ decay, interpreted as originating primarily from an asymmetric $\it{\Lambda}_{\it{b}}^\rm{0} \to \it{N}^{*+} \it{K}^-$ decay amplitude. Abstract

We present the large-scale distribution and kinematics of cold molecular gas across the compact galaxy group Stephan's Quintet, based on CO(2-1) observations performed with the Atacama Compact Array (ACA) and CO(1-0) data from the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy (CARMA). We find coherent structures of molecular gas associated with the galaxies and intra-group medium, which follow the distribution of warm H$_{2}$ previously seen with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). CO is associated with a ridge of shocked gas that crosses the galaxy group, and with a spiral arm of the intruding galaxy NGC7318b, which interacts with the intra-group medium along the ridge. Although the ridge contains widespread shocks, turbulent gas, and warm H$_{2}$, the CO lines are narrower than elsewhere in Stephan's Quintet (FWHM~25-65 km/s), indicative of settled cold gas. At a distinctly different velocity, CO is found in the active galaxy NGC7319 and Northern star-forming region SQ-A. A bridge of turbulent molecular gas connects NGC7319 with the ridge, covering a gap of ~700 km/s between these structures. The gas excitation ranges from $L'_{\rm CO(2-1)}$/$L'_{\rm CO(1-0)}$ ~ 0.3 in the bridge and SQ-A, to ~0.5 along the ridge, to near unity in the center of NGC7319. We also detect either a molecular outflow or turbulent molecular gas associated with the radio source in NGC7319. These ACA data are part of a program with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and JWST to study molecular gas physics from the largest to the smallest scales across the intra-group medium of Stephan's Quintet., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract

What does work and career success mean for those who secure their work using digital labor platforms? Traditional research on success predominantly relies on organizationally-centric benchmarks, such as promotions and income. These measures provide limited insights into the evolving nature of work and careers shaped at the intersection of digital labor platform technologies and workers' evolving perspectives. Drawing on data from a longitudinal study of 108 digital labor platform workers on Upwork, we (1) identify seven dimensions of success indicators that reflect workers' definitions of success in platform-mediated work and careers, (2) delineate three dimensions of digital labor platforms mediating workers' experiences of success and (3) examine the shifting perspectives of these workers relative to success. Based on these findings, we discuss the implications of platform-mediated success in workers' labor experiences, marked by platformic management, standardization, precarity and ongoing evolution. Abstract

Quantum annealers play a major role in the ongoing development of quantum information processing and in the advent of quantum technologies. Their functioning is underpinned by the many-body adiabatic evolution connecting the ground state of a simple system to that of an interacting classical Hamiltonian which encodes the solution to an optimization problem. Here we explore more general properties of the dynamics of quantum annealers, going beyond the low-energy regime. We show that the unitary evolution operator describing the complete dynamics is typically highly quantum chaotic. As a result, the annealing dynamics naturally leads to volume-law entangled random-like states when the initial configuration is rotated away from the low-energy subspace. Furthermore, we observe that the Heisenberg dynamics of a quantum annealer leads to extensive operator spreading, a hallmark of quantum information scrambling. In all cases, we study how deviations from chaotic behavior can be identified when analyzing cyclic ramps, where the annealing schedule is returned to the initial configuration., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, comments welcome

Abstract

Understanding the processes that drive the morphology and kinematics of molecular gas in galaxies is crucial for comprehending star formation and, ultimately, galaxy evolution. Using data obtained with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), we study the behavior of the warm molecular gas at temperatures of hundreds of Kelvin and the cold molecular gas at tens of Kelvin in the galaxy MCG$-$05$-$23$-$16, which hosts an active galactic nucleus (AGN). Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images of this spheroidal galaxy, classified in the optical as S0, show a dust lane resembling a nuclear spiral and a surrounding ring. These features are also detected in CO(2$-$1) and H2, and their morphologies and kinematics are consistent with rotation plus local inward gas motions along the kinematic minor axis in the presence of a nuclear bar. The H2 transitions 0-0 S(3), 0-0 S(4), and 0-0 S(5), which trace warmer and more excited gas, show more disrupted kinematics than 0-0 S(1) and 0-0 S(2), including clumps of high-velocity dispersion (of up to $\sim$ 160 km/s), in regions devoid of CO(2$-$1). The kinematics of one of these clumps, located at $\sim$ 350 pc westward from the nucleus, are consistent with outflowing gas, possibly driven by localized star formation traced by Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) emission at 11.3 ${\mu}$m. Overall, we observe a stratification of the molecular gas, with the colder gas located in the nuclear spiral, ring, and connecting arms, while most warmer gas with higher velocity-dispersion fills the inter-arm space. The compact jet, approximately 200 pc in size, detected with Very Large Array (VLA) observations, does not appear to significantly affect the distribution and kinematics of the molecular gas, possibly due to its limited intersection with the molecular gas disc., Comment: 19 pages, 15 figures, 2. Abstract

We present cosmological results from the measurement of clustering of galaxy, quasar and Lyman-$\alpha$ forest tracers from the first year of observations with the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI Data Release 1). We adopt the full-shape (FS) modeling of the power spectrum, including the effects of redshift-space distortions, in an analysis which has been validated in a series of supporting papers. In the flat $\Lambda$CDM cosmological model, DESI (FS+BAO), combined with a baryon density prior from Big Bang Nucleosynthesis and a weak prior on the scalar spectral index, determines matter density to $\Omega_\mathrm{m}=0.2962\pm 0.0095$, and the amplitude of mass fluctuations to $\sigma_8=0.842\pm 0.034$. The addition of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) data tightens these constraints to $\Omega_\mathrm{m}=0.3056\pm 0.0049$ and $\sigma_8=0.8121\pm 0.0053$, while further addition of the the joint clustering and lensing analysis from the Dark Energy Survey Year-3 (DESY3) data leads to a 0.4% determination of the Hubble constant, $H_0 = (68.40\pm 0.27)\,{\rm km\,s^{-1}\,Mpc^{-1}}$. In models with a time-varying dark energy equation of state, combinations of DESI (FS+BAO) with CMB and type Ia supernovae continue to show the preference, previously found in the DESI DR1 BAO analysis, for $w_0>-1$ and $w_a<0$ with similar levels of significance. DESI data, in combination with the CMB, impose the upper limits on the sum of the neutrino masses of $\sum m_\nu < 0.071\,{\rm eV}$ at 95% confidence. DESI data alone measure the modified-gravity parameter that controls the clustering of massive particles, $\mu_0=0.11^{+0.45}_{-0.54}$, while the combination of DESI with the CMB and the clustering and lensing analysis from DESY3 constrains both modified-gravity parameters, giving $\mu_0 = 0.04\pm 0.22$ and $\Sigma_0 = 0.044\pm 0.047$, in agreement with general relativity. Abstract

We present the samples of galaxies and quasars used for DESI 2024 cosmological analyses, drawn from the DESI Data Release 1 (DR1). We describe the construction of large-scale structure (LSS) catalogs from these samples, which include matched sets of synthetic reference `randoms' and weights that account for variations in the observed density of the samples due to experimental design and varying instrument performance. We detail how we correct for variations in observational completeness, the input `target' densities due to imaging systematics, and the ability to confidently measure redshifts from DESI spectra. We then summarize how remaining uncertainties in the corrections can be translated to systematic uncertainties for particular analyses. We describe the weights added to maximize the signal-to-noise of DESI DR1 2-point clustering measurements. We detail measurement pipelines applied to the LSS catalogs that obtain 2-point clustering measurements in configuration and Fourier space. The resulting 2-point measurements depend on window functions and normalization constraints particular to each sample, and we present the corrections required to match models to the data. We compare the configuration- and Fourier-space 2-point clustering of the data samples to that recovered from simulations of DESI DR1 and find they are, generally, in statistical agreement to within 2\% in the inferred real-space over-density field.
