Garnet peridotite xenoliths have been rarely reported from suboceanic mantle. Petrographic and geochemical characteristics of garnet-bearing oceanic peridotite xenoliths provide precious information on dynamics of the suboceanic lithosphere and asthenosphere interaction. We examined a lherzolite xenolith included in olivine nephelinite lava from Aitutaki Island, a member of the Cook-Austral volcanic chain. The lherzolite xenolith contains reddish fine-grained (< 5 µm in size) mineral aggregates (FMAs) with size range of 0.5–6 mm, consisting of olivine, calcic and sodic plagioclases, aluminous spinel, native iron, and nepheline. Microstructural observations and chemical data corroborate that the FMA is a decomposed pyrope-rich garnet including chromian spinel grains with an irregular highly indented morphology in the center. The FMA is surrounded by pyroxene-poor and olivine-rich aureole. The spatial and morphological relationships of FMA and chromian spinel with pyroxene-depleted margin suggest a reaction of aluminous spinel + pyroxenes → pyrope-rich garnet + olivine, which requires a compression before decomposition of the garnet to FMA. An orthopyroxene grain shows slight but clear chemical zoning characterized by increase in Al, Ca, and Cr from the grain center to the rim. The zoning patterns of Al and Ca in the orthopyroxene grain can be modeled by diffusion-controlled solid-state reactions induced by pressure and temperature changes, keeping surface concentrations in equilibrium with the other coexisting mineral phases. The results indicate that the mantle, from which the lherzolite xenolith was derived, underwent isothermal decompression followed by a weak heating on a time scale of a few tenths of million years before the xenolith extraction. From the deduced compression and decompression histories, we hypothesize that the mantle beneath Aitutaki Island was once dragged down to a garnet-stable deep mantle region and brought up later by small-scale sublithosph

Areas of old and cold oceanic plate lack conventional volcanism and have been assumed to be devoid of submarine hydrothermal activity. However, petit-spot volcanoes are common in areas of flexure of such oceanic plates. Here, we report hydrothermal ferromanganese oxides dredged from the vicinity of a petit-spot volcano at 5.7 km water depth in an area of oceanic plate flexure east of the Japan Trench. The bulk chemical, lead isotopic and mineralogical compositions of the samples indicate their formation by low-temperature hydrothermal activity, which can be interpreted as being caused by fluid–rock interactions at <200 °C. We propose that interaction of local marine sediments with volatile-rich petit-spot magmas may produce hydrothermal fluids containing not only iron and manganese but also enough amounts of carbon dioxide and methane to have implications for the global carbon cycle. However, contemporary hydrothermal activities at petit-spot volcanoes have not been confirmed yet.

Vast ferromanganese nodule fields have been found on the deep-sea floor of all oceans worldwide. They have received attention because they potentially provide high-grade metal resources to develop future high- and green-technology. However, how these vast nodule fields were formed and developed owing to their widespread nature or tendency to be denser with an increasing number of nodules has not yet been established. In this study, the fine-scale inner structure of nodules of various sizes was analyzed on the basis of chemical mapping using microfocus X-ray fluorescence. We found that nodules distributed in the vast field around Minamitorishima (Marcus) Island have several types of innermost layers, which correspond to different chemostratigraphic layers of nodules that have been previously reported by us in this region. As nodules grow in order from the center to the outside, the different types in the innermost layer indicate a difference in the timing of the beginning of their growth. Moreover, because the differences in the chemical features of each layer reflect differences in the composition of the original deep-sea water, our results imply that the beginning of nodule formation occurred intermittently at each time of a water mass replacement due to new deep-sea currents flowing into this region. We recognized that the northern part of the study area was dominated by large nodules that started to grow in relatively earlier times, while the southern part tended to have many nodules that grew in relatively later times. Based on these observations, we hypothesize that the intermittent beginning of nodule formation is governed by the northward inflow of the deep-sea current that originated from the Lower Circumpolar Deep Water for an extended time to form the vast nodule field. The deep carbon cycle plays an important role on the chemical differentiation and physical properties of the Earth's mantle. Especially in the asthenosphere, seismic low-velocity and high electrical conductivity due to carbon dioxide (CO2)-induced partial melting are expected but not directly observed. Here we discuss the experimental results relevant to the genesis of primitive CO2-rich alkali magma forming petit-spot volcanoes at the deformation front of the outer rise of the northwestern Pacific plate. The results suggest that primitive melt last equilibrated with depleted peridotite at 1.8 - 2.1 GPa and 1, 280 - 1, 290 °C. Although the equilibration pressure corresponds to the pressure of the lower lithosphere, by considering an equilibration temperature higher than the solidus in the volatile - peridotite system along with the temperature of the lower lithosphere, we conclude that CO2-rich silicate melt is always produced in the asthenosphere. The melt subsequently ascends into and equilibrates with the lower lithosphere before eruption.

The Accessible Silicate Earth (ASE) has a higher 142Nd/144Nd ratio than most chondrites. Thus, if the Earth is assumed to have formed from these chondrites, a complement low-142Nd/144Nd reservoir is needed. Such a low-142Nd/144Nd reservoir is believed to have been derived from a melt in the early Earth and is called the Early Enriched Reservoir (EER). Although the major element composition of the EER is crucial for estimating its chemical and physical properties (e.g., density) and is also essential for understanding the origin and fate of the EER, which are both major factors that determine the present composition of the Earth, it has not yet been robustly established. In order to determine the major element composition of the EER, we estimated the age and pressure–temperature conditions to form the EER that would best explain its Nd isotopic characteristics, based on Sm–Nd partitioning and its dependence on pressure, temperature, and melting phase relations. Our estimate indicates that the EER formed within 33.5 Myr of Solar System formation and at near-solidus temperatures and shallow upper-mantle pressures. We then performed high-pressure melting experiments on primitive peridotite to determine the major element composition of the EER at estimated temperature at 7 GPa and calculated the density of the EER. The result of our experiments indicates that the near-solidus melt is iron-rich komatiite. The estimated density of the near-solidus melt is lower than that of the primitive peridotite, suggesting that the EER melt would have ascended in the mantle to form an early crust. Given that high mantle potential temperatures are assumed to have existed in the Hadean, it follows that the EER melt was generated at high pressure and, therefore, its composition would have been picritic to komatiitic. As the formation age of the EER estimated in our study precedes the last giant, lunar-forming impact, the picritic to komatiitic crust (EER) would most likely have been eject
