In this work, a new series of 1,2-diphenyl-3aH-spiro[benzo[d]pyrrolo[2,1-b]thaizol-3,5ʹ-pyrimidine (4) or 3,2ʹ-indendion (6) derivatives were efficiently designed and prepared using a novel and easy route in excellent yields by multicomponent-reactions between benzothiazoles, 2-chloro-2-phenylacetophenone, and 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds. These reactions were carried out in CH2Cl2 at ambient temperature under catalyst-free conditions for 3 h. The structure all of the synthesized compounds were established by NMR, IR, EI-MS and elemental analyses.

Driven by the success of quinoidal units for enabling high‐performance polymer semiconductors, herein a new quinoidal building block that terminated by indandione is reported. By introducing Br atoms into the terminal benzene rings of indandione, two CPs, P2TbTI‐DPP and P2TbTI‐TIID, are synthesized through Stille polycondensation. The strong electron‐withdrawing ability of indandione‐terminated quinoidal unit enables P2TbTI‐DPP and P2TbTI‐TIID with low‐lying LUMO energy levels of ≈–3.90 eV. Organic thin‐film transistors based on P2TbTI‐DPP and P2TbTI‐TIID exhibit n‐type transport behavior. In this work, we synthesized a series of chalcone‐based 2‐arylidene‐1,3‐indandione and evaluated their inhibitory activities against the mushroom tyrosinase enzyme. Based on benzylidene moiety, derivatives were divided into 4‐benzyloxy‐benzylidene and 4‐benzyloxy‐3‐methoxy‐benzylidene derivatives. Among them, 2‐(3‐methoxy‐4‐((4‐methylbenzyl)oxy)benzylidene)‐1H‐indene‐1,3(2H)‐dione (6 l) was presented the superior activity with an IC50 value of 15.85±3.64 μM, which was lower than the standard kojic acid. The kinetic study of compound 6 l displayed an uncompetitive inhibition mode on the tyrosinase enzyme. Next, the docking study exhibited compound 6 l formed hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interactions with critical highly conserved amino acids in the target protein. Furthermore, based on the molecular dynamics simulation, compound 6 l depicted noticeable interaction with the essential residues of the binding site and exhibited a stable complex during the simulation run. The methoxy group on the central ring was important in inducing the effective conformation for ligand‐enzyme interaction. The drug‐likeness and pharmacokinetic properties were calculated via in silico predictions and showed an acceptable profile for these agents. 2‐Quinolinecarbaldehyde reacts with 1,3‐indandione to give 2‐[(3‐hydroxy‐1‐oxo‐1H‐inden‐2‐yl)(quinolin‐2‐yl)methylene]‐1H‐indene‐1,3(2H)‐dione, which is the first example of self‐oxidation of the Michael adducts of cycloalkanones with aldehydes. The structure of the product of oxidation is also proved by NMR and elemental analysis of its bromination product 2‐[(2‐bromo‐1,3‐dioxo‐2,3‐dihydro‐1H‐inden‐2‐yl)(1,3‐dioxo‐1,3‐dihydro‐2H‐inden‐2‐ylidene)‐methyl]quinolinium tribromide salt. The mechanism of this unusual reaction is studied experimentally and theoretically in comparison with that of a similar reaction with 2‐pyridinecarbaldehyde, which does not lead to self‐oxidation. The three‐step mechanism includes the formation of a pre‐reaction complex, which suffers proton transfer to the pyridinic nitrogen atom, and the hydride ion transfer to the protonated aldehyde. The transition states for the two reactions differ by the position on the reaction coordinate and the heights of the free energy barriers (~25 and ~4 kcal/mol), which allows to explain the observed different reactivity of the two similar hetaryl aldehydes. Three fluorescent dyes (DI-TB, ICZ-TB and ITPA-TB) were synthesized based on 1,3-indindanedione substituted Tröger's base (TB). All the dyes exhibited AIE properties in the mixed system of chloroform and n -hexane. The compounds showed reversible MCL properties with obvious fluorescence changes, which were confirmed by XRD and DSC. The fluorescence of ITPA-TB showed high contrast (68 nm) before and after grinding, and the fluorescence changed from yellow (546 nm) to red (614 nm). In addition, the three solid compounds showed good thermal stability by thermogravimetric analysis. The TB dyes further opened up new ideas for the development of TB-based mechanochromic luminescent materials. A series of pyranocoumarins and benzocoumarins were synthesized by base‐mediated reaction of 4‐chloro‐3‐vinyl coumarins with cyclic 1,3‐dikeones in ethanol at reflux. Reactions using dimedone and 1,3‐cyclohexadione gave pyranocoumarins, whereas 1,3‐indandione resulted in the formation of unexpected benzocoumarin derivatives. As an important chemical raw material, hydrazine brings convenience to people's lives and provides opportunities for human development. However, the misuse or leakage of hydrazine has brought pollution to the environment, including water, soil and living organisms. At the same time, hydrazine poses a potential threat to human health as a carcinogen. Despite the enormous challenges, it is crucial to develop an effective method to detect hydrazine in environmental samples. In this work, we have synthesized a series of probes based on phenothiazine fluorophore by the introduction of different substituents and developed a novel probe for the detection of hydrazine. The probe is capable of detecting hydrazine in aqueous solutions with high sensitivity and selectivity, and can be easily fabricated into paper test strips for use in in situ samples. In addition, the probe is effective in detecting hydrazine in water, soil, cells, and zebrafish, providing an excellent tool for detecting hydrazine in the environment. Several new fused polycyclic 2,3-dihydro-thieno[2,3-b]quinolin-3-ol derivatives were synthesis through the un-catalyzed reaction of various 2-mercaptobenzoquinoline-3-carbaldehydes with 2-bromoacetophenones in CH2Cl2 at 80–90% yield. Besides, reaction of differently substituted 3-formyl-2-mercaptoquinolines and various 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds such as dimedone, ethyl acetoacetate and 1,3-indandione) in the presence of AlCl3 as an efficient catalyst in CH2Cl2 at room temperature gave different novel fused polyheterocycle derivatives depends on the selection of 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds, respectively. A highly efficient catalytic preparation of 2-amino-5-oxo-4-aryl-4,5-dihydroindeno[1,2-b]pyran-3-carbonitrile derivatives using different metal silicates was developed through a three-component reaction of malononitrile, aromatic aldehydes, and 1,3-indandione in high yields.

Discovery towards the potent antimicrobial agents is indispensable for the treatment of infections caused by resistant microbes. Thus, we prepared a novel series of 3-substituted 5-phenylindeno-thiazolopyrimidinone derivatives following conventional method. All the molecules were investigated for their in vitro antimicrobial potency against different bacteria and fungi, and the results were compared with streptomycin and clotrimazole standard drugs, respectively. Among the twelve analogs, 4-methoxyphenyl-5-phenylindeno[1,2-d]thiazolo[3,2-a]pyrimidin-6(5H)-one showed equipotent activity against a bacterium, Staphylococcus aureus (minimum inhibitory concentration 25 µg/mL and zone of inhibition 22 mm), and a fungus, Aspergillus niger (zone of inhibition 20 mm). A rapid and sensitive spectrophotometric method has been developed for the quantitative analysis of three antiviral, anti-parkinsonism drugs, namely, amantadine (AMA), memantine (MET), and rimantadine (RIM). The method is based on the usage of 1,3-indandione (IDO) as a chromogenic reagent to form charge transfer complexes with the studied drugs and produce colored reaction products with an absorbance maximum at 522 nm, allowing quantitative analysis of these drugs. In addition, the study was validated according to the official guidelines that permits usage in quality control laboratories. Many factors (reagent volume, diluting solvent, temperature, reaction and stability time) influencing the reactions were studied and optimized. The results showed that this method is able to detect AMA, MET, or RIM over a linear range between 10–140 μg/mL with high selectivity and robustness. The novel oxonine 2, 4 have been synthesized by the reaction of 1,3-indandione with 4-bromo-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde and/or 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde in the presence of 1,3-diaminopropan-2-ol as green basic catalyst. A facile and environmentally benign synthesis of some 2-(2-oxo-2H-chromen-3-yl)-4-aryl-indeno[1,2-b]pyridine-5-one derivatives from the reaction of aromatic aldehydes, 3-acetylcoumarin, 1,3-indandione and ammonium acetate using phthalimide-N-sulfonic acid (PISA) as a catalyst is described. The present method has some important features such as mild reaction conditions, short reaction times, less catalyst dosage and high yields with the green aspects by avoiding toxic catalysts and solvents. Further, the catalyst can be reused for four times without any noticeable decrease in the catalytic activity.

A highly diastereoselective method for the synthesis of novel spiro-tetrahydroquinoline derivatives is reported here, using a one-pot reaction method. All compounds were characterized by 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and mass spectroscopy, and their stereo configurations were confirmed by X-ray analysis. These activities of these derivatives were then tested in human keratocyte cells. The responses of cells to treatment with selected compounds were studied using scratch analysis, and the compounds were tested in a mouse excision wound model. Three of the derivatives demonstrated significant wound-healing activities.

Three new anticoagulant rodenticides R1, R2, and R3 were designed. The containing fluorine acute toxicity groups was added to 1,3-indandione derivative. Analysis method of synthesized anticoagulant rodenticides were IR, 1H NMR. Acute bioactivity of the new rodenticides was evaluated, including the coefficient of absorb food and median lethal dose (LD50). Average coefficient of absorbed food for R1 was 0.54 and LD50 of R1 was 2.15 mg/kg. Average coefficient of absorbed food for R2 was 0.59 and the acute oral LD50 of R2 was 2.65 mg/kg. Average feeding coefficient of R3 was 0.68 and the acute oral LD50 of R3 was 3.12 mg/kg. Experiments showed that rat's death peak was at about 72 h and rodenticides had good characteristics of acute medicine. The LD50 of three new fluoride anticoagulant rodenticides showed that they had good palatability for big white rats, and they had a strong poison effect on rodent. The result of all experiments proved that the synthesis of 1,3-indan diketone used as parent compound of new anticoagulant rodenticides could replace the current 4-hydroxyl coumarin as parent compound of the second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides. 1,3-Indan diketone would be widely used as parent compound of anticoagulant rodenticides. Abstract A series of novel cationic trimethine oxonol dyes with pyridinium substituents in the β-position of polymethine chain have been synthesized via an easy and efficient methodology by the condensation of 1,3-indandione with various substituted vinamidinium salts in ethanol as a green solvent without formation of any byproducts. The chemical structure of the synthesized dyes was investigated by FTIR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and HRMS techniques. The solutions of the new dyes in DMF absorbed visible light wavelengths at about 524–530 nm with narrow band widths and high molar absorption coefficients (around 1–2 × 105 dm3 mol−1 cm−1). They also exhibited fluorescence with a maximum emission intensity at about 700 nm and a relatively large (about 171–176 nm) Stokes shift. An optimized geometrical configuration of the dyes has been determined by using the density functional theory (DFT) at B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) theoretical level. A solvent-controlled four-component reaction has been described for the preparation of either hydroxy-tetrahydro-thiaza-cyclopenta[ c ]fluoren-6-one or dihydro-thiaza-cyclopenta[ c ]fluoren-6-one from nitroketene dithioacetals, cysteamine hydrochloride, 1,3-indandione and aromatic aldehydes starting materials by changing solvent systems. These reactions proceed under catalyst-free conditions affording a range of two types of skeletally distinct thiazolo[3,2- a ]pyridines-based heterocycles. Hydroxy-tetrahydro-thiaza-cyclopenta[ c ]fluoren-6-one was obtained in H 2 O/EtOH (3:1, v/v) in high yield and diastereoselectivity but in contrast dihydro-thiaza-cyclopenta[ c ]fluoren-6-one was synthesised in EtOH in moderate to good yields and in the longer reaction time. Photochemical reaction of trans -2,6-diaryl-4 H -spiro[cyclohexane-1,2′-indene]-1′,3′,4-triones gives rise to the formation of the ylidenephthalide derivatives as previously observed for 2,2-disubstituted 1,3-indandiones. In contrast, the respective cis -isomers afford different products originating from the unprecedented reversible cyclohexanone cycle breaking (photo-induced retro-Michael reaction). 1,3-Indandione reacts with 8-quinolinecarbaldehyde to give, depending on the conditions, 2,2'-(quinolin-8-ylmethylene)bis(1 H -indene-1,3(2 H)-dione) 3 or 2-(quinolin-8-ylmethylene)-1 H -indene-1,3(2 H)-dione 4. The 2:1 adduct 3 exhibits dynamic behavior distinct from that of the 2-pyridyl analogue. On cooling, the singlets of the central CH and 2-CH protons resolve into a triplet and doublet, respectively. On heating, all aromatic protons of the two indandione moieties in 3 are averaged due to reversible gear-like rotation of the quinoline fragment driven by the keto-enol tautomerization. In strongly basic DMSO, adduct 3 is reversibly fragmented into 1,3-indandione and 1:1 adduct 4 , the first example of 1:1 adduct of indanones with electron-deficient hetaryl aldehydes. Protonation with trifluoroacetic acid at low temperature reveals the presence of several protonated forms differing by the configuration of the central carbon. Theoretical DFT calculations of adduct 3 , its tautomers, rotamers, transition states and protonated forms were performed to support the experimental results. A new one-pot and efficient three-component condensation of 1,3-diphenyl-2-propen-1-ones (chalcones), 1,3-indandione, and ammonium acetate using pentafluorophenylammonium triflate (PFPAT) as catalyst for the synthesis of substituted 2,4-diaryl-5H-indeno[1,2-b]pyridin-5-one is described. A series of 3,4-disubstituted dihydroquinolin-2(1 H)-ones have been synthesized via three-component reaction of 1,3-indandione with isatin derivatives and N-phenacyl pyridinium bromide salts in presence of triethylamine as basic reagent. This procedure affords a highly efficient route for accessing quinolones by ring expansion of isatin via a one-pot pathway. 4-(Diethylamino)salicylaldehyde-based twin compounds containing 1,3-indandione and 1,3-bisdicianovinylindane moieties were synthesized and their thermal, optical, photophysical, electrochemical, photoelectrical and nonlinear optical properties were studied. The synthesized compounds form glasses with the glass transition temperatures ranging from 79 to 103 °C. Photoluminescence spectra of the solutions of compounds exhibited red-shifts with the increase of the solvent polarity that was caused by the positive solvatochromic effect. The linear dependencies between the position of the photoluminescence maxima of compounds and the empirical parameter E T (30) of the different solvents were observed. The electron photoemission spectra of thin layers of the synthesized materials showed ionization potentials of 5.34–5.52 eV. The nonlinear optical properties of corona poled molecular glasses were characterized by means of Maker fringe technique. Synthesis of 1,3-diphenylethenylcarbazolyl-based charge transporting materials involving electron donating hydrazone moieties and an electron withdrawing 1,3-indandione moiety is reported. The obtained materials were examined by various techniques, including differential scanning calorimetry, UV-Vis spectroscopy, xerographic time of flight technique and the electron photoemission in air method. Photoemission spectra of the amorphous films of the investigated compounds showed ionization potentials of 5.54–5.90 eV. The hole drift mobility was measured by the xerographic time of flight technique. The highest hole drift mobility, exceeding 10−5 cm2/V·s at 6.4 × 105 V/cm electric field, was observed for the 1,3-diphenylethenylcarbazolyl derivative molecularly doped with a N,N-diphenylhydrazone moiety in the polymeric host bisphenol-Z polycarbonate (PC-Z).

A sequential one-pot four-component reaction for the efficient synthesis of novel 16-(aryl)benzo[ a]indeno[2′,1′:5,6]pyrano[2,3- c]phenazin-15(16 H)-one derivatives has been developed. The synthesis was achieved by reacting 2-hydroxynaphthalene-1,4-dione, benzene-1,2-diamine, aromatic aldehydes, and 1,3-indandione in the presence of oxalic acid as a reusable and homogenous organocatalyst in EtOH/HO (1:1) under reflux. An acceptor-donor-acceptor (A–D–A)-type small molecule,BDT-IN, having a benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene (BDT) unit as its electron-donating core (D) and an 1,3-indanedione (IN) unit as its electron-withdrawing end group (A), was synthesized by Knoevenagel condensation. TheBDT-INfilm showed broader UV absorption with a greater red shift (λmax= 622 nm) than that of theBDT-INsolution (λmax= 570 nm). Monomers and polymers containing arylmethylene-1,3-indandione and arylmethylene-1,3-bisdicyanovinylindane moieties were synthesized. The number average molecular weights of the polymers were found to be of 6030 and 7230 and polydispersity indices of 3.76 and 3.07, respectively. Thermal, optical, photophysical, photoelectrical and electrochemical properties of the synthesized compounds were studied. Their 5 % weight loss temperatures ranged from 261 to 300 °C. Both the monomers and the polymers were found capable to form glasses with glass transition temperatures of 43-104 °C. Cyclic voltammograms of the synthesized compounds showed one quasi-reversible oxidation couple and quasi-reversible reduction waves. The ionization potentials of the solid samples of the synthesized materials established by photoelectron spectrometry were found to be in the range of 5.25-5.41 eV. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A series of novel thiazolylhydrazone derivatives ( 4a- f, 6a- f) were synthesized via one-pot multicomponent condensation of 1,3-indandione ( 1), thiosemicarbazide ( 2) and 3-(2-bromoacetyl)-2 H-chromen-2-ones ( 3a- f)/2-bromo-1-(4-substituted-phenyl)ethanone ( 5a- f). All the synthesized compounds were characterized by spectral and elemental analyses. All the synthesized compounds were evaluated for their in vitro antimicrobial activity. Antibacterial activity results revealed that compound 6d, possessing 4-methylphenyl on thiazole ring, has shown equipotent activity against K. pneumoniae (ZOI 22 mm, MIC 50 µg/ml) on comparing with the standard drug Streptomycin. Compounds 4a- f, 6a, 6b, and 6d against P. aeruginosa and compounds ( 4a- d) against S. pyogenes have shown promising antibacterial activity with ZOI ranging from 14 to 17 mm. Antifungal activity results revealed that, compound 6d has shown maximum zone of inhibition against four fungal strains C. albicans, C. glabrata, A. niger, and A. parasiticus with ZOI 19, 16, 20, and 20 mm, respectively, on comparing with the standard drug clotrimazole. Two linear thiophene-containing π-conjugated aldehydes 4-(thiophen-2-yl)benzaldehyde and 2,5-bis[4-(formyl)phenyl]thiophene exhibiting aggregation-induced emission (AIE) were demonstrated. The photophysical properties of the two aldehydes in solution and THF/H 2 O mixtures were studied, and aggregates formed with different water fractions were studied by scanning electron microscopy. Results indicated that amorphous nanoscale aggregates exhibit distinct AIE behavior when assembled in solutions with appropriate water contents. Condensation of 1,3-indandione with 4-(thiophen-2-yl)benzaldehyde generated a new luminophor 2-[4-(thiophen-2-yl)benzylidene]-2H-indene-1,3-dione; this product presents as a solid powder that emits intensely red photoluminescence at 620 nm with a quantum yield of 12.8%. An effective and environment-friendly protocol for the synthesis of indenonaphthopyrans has been developed by one-pot reaction of 2-naphthol, various aromatic aldehydes and 1,3-indandione, in the presence of copper(II) triflate as the catalyst while using reflux (Method A) and ultrasound (Method B). The Method B approach offers the advantages of a simple reaction method, short reaction time, excellent yield, and showcases the economic importance of the catalysts for such processes. Abstract: A new one-pot and efficient three-component condensation of 1,3-diphenyl-2-propen-1-ones (chalcones), 1,3-indandione, and ammonium acetate using pentafluorophenylammonium triflate (PFPAT) as catalyst for the synthesis of substituted 2,4-diaryl-5H-indeno[1,2-b]pyridin-5-one is described. The present methodology offers several advantages, such as good yields, atom economy, short reaction times and a recyclable catalyst with a very easy work up. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
