本論文は明治20年代、北海道の各集治監で働いたキリスト教教誨師たちのグループ、いわゆる「北海道バンド」の一員であった水崎基一(1871～1937)についての研究である。水崎は長野県松本の出身で、同志社で学び、卒業と同時に北海道樺戸集治監の教誨師として赴任する。ここで約2年間あまり、囚人たちに寄り添いながら、他の教誨師仲間と協力し、監獄改良事業に尽力した。この論文で当時の新聞、雑誌類、監獄関係の書籍を利用し、水崎の教誨師時代の活動や業績、思想について考察し、教誨師としての水崎を明らかにする。, This paper is a research on Motoichi Mizusaki (1871-1937) who was a member of the Hokkaido Band, which was a group of Christian prison chaplains of Hokkaido prison during the Meiji 20s. Mizusaki was born in Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture, studied at Doshisha University, and became a prison chaplain of Kabato Prison in Hokkaido upon graduation. For about two years, he worked closely with the prisoners, cooperated with other fellow prison chaplains, and worked on prison improvement. This study uses newspapers, magazines, and books related to prisons of that time, and examine Mizusaki's activities, achievements, and ideas to clarify his role as a prison chaplain., 研究ノート(Note)

この研究ノートは、淡江大学の未来学研究所との共同研究の一環で、東アジアの未来を読み解く理論構築のための準備作業である。この研究の第一目的は、21世紀の東アジアの文化が今後どのように発展していくかを予測することにある。今回はこの研究を開始するにあたり、1)2019年現在の台湾に関する有力な言説を紹介し、2)続いて阪口直樹による台湾と同志社にかかわる歴史研究を吟味し、その後3)同志社大学文化情報学部との協定校である台湾の淡江大学との学生交流を取り上げ、東アジアにおけるポストモダン文化の未来を考察する。, This article is a part of our project of predicting the future of East Asian culture. We will be expecting to cooperate with the Graduate Institute of Futures Studies at Tamkang University in Taiwan. We pay special attention to massive apolitical people in the region to see what is happening behind the political scene. First, we sum up the current Japanese views of contemporary Taiwanese political as well as cultural issues by such superb journalist and scholar as Tsuyosi Nojima and Inuhiko Yomoda. Then we examine Naoki Sakaguchi’s historical research of the relationship between Taiwan and Doshisha before the World War II. Finally we review our short visit program at Tamkang University and suggest possible ways for future studies regarding the apolitical mass in the regeon., 研究ノート

1880年代から90年代にかけての同志社の大学設立運動史研究において、しばしば疑問視されるのが、寄附を約束した人物が「実際に」いかほどの額を拠出したのか、という問題である。寄附窓口となった新聞記事や同志社社史資料センター所蔵簿冊を通じ、著名な個々人の寄附額を確定するとともに、以下の結論を導き出した。寄附は「申込」「支払」の二段階で募集されたので、会計が混乱し、最終的決算は1897年にずれこんだ。「申込」に対する納入率は8割弱、当初目標額約70,000円に対しては約7割の達成率となった。, 論説(Article)

1880年代における同志社大学設立義捐金募集の取扱窓口となった京阪神の新聞各紙の報道姿勢および拠金受付実態を分析した。京都の『中外電報』『日出新聞』は府下郡部からの義捐を集め、『大阪朝日新聞』は府下ではなく西日本一帯からの寄附を呼び込んだ。『大阪毎日新聞』は慶応義塾の運動への共感がより強く、『東雲新聞』は募金窓口というよりオピニオン紙に徹した。『神戸又新日報』には地元キリスト教界の動向がよく反映された。, This article analyzes the attitude and the achievements of the newspapers in Kyoto, Osaka and Kobe in the fundraising activities to establish Doshisha University in 1880s. "The Chugai Denpo" and "The Hinode Shimbun" accepted the donation from the rural district in Kyoto. "The Osaka Asahi Shimbun" accepted the donation not from the rural district in Osaka but widely from Western Japan. "The Osaka Mainichi Shimbun" expressed more sympathy with the activities of Keio. "The Shinonome Shimbun" was the opinion leader for Doshisha, but it didn't contribute to the fundraising. 日本の近代体育の授業は1878年設立の体操伝習所ではなく,新島襄が創立した同志社で1876年に行われた.その源流は,彼が1867から在籍し卒業したアメリカ初の体育学科と体育館を創設したアーモスト大学の学生の健康を目的とした体育の授業である.我が国の体育の教授法の研究と体育教員の養成を目的とした体操伝習所の指導者として、アーモスト大学のリーランドを招聘したのは、新島が案内した岩倉具視使節団のアーモスト大学訪問がきっかけであった., Doshisha was the first in Japan to give the modern physical education class in 1876. It was 2 years prior to the foundation of Taiso Denshusho. The class has its source from Amherst College; the first college in USA that established department of hygiene and physical education and also the first to build a college gymnasium. Neesima attended the physical education class at Amherst College during his stay from 1867 to1870. In 1878, Dr. G.A.Leland at Amherst College was invited to establish Taiso Denshusho in Japan. The purpose was to study the method of physical education teaching and educating teachers. Neesima guided Iwakura Mission visiting Amherst College and lead the way for the establishment.

1893年秋に京都の第三高等中学校の教師として着任したジェインズは、同志社の学生に招かれて三回の連続講演をする。講演は宣教師たちを憤激させ、主催した学生をあきれさせた。従来その講演内容は十分に検討されなかった。ジェインズは進化論とリベラルな神学に基き、宣教師の正統主義をきびしく批判したのであり、その立場は同志社の神学の方向を示すことになる。, L.L.Janes, who arrived in Kyoto in 1893, gave a series of three lecture by the request of Doshisha students. この原稿は同志社時代の山室軍平の日記の紹介である。日記は1892年12月29日から1893年1月13日までである。そこに認められている32編の小論を紹介する。ここには彼の20歳の時の考え方や思想が表現されている。この記録は初めて紹介されるものである。そしてこれは山室軍平が救世軍に入るまでの貴重な記録でもある。, This manuscript is introduction of the diary of Gunpei YAMAMURO during his Doshisha college student days. His diary is from December 29th of 1892 to January 13th of 1893. I introduce 32 pieces of short articles which YAMAMURO wrote. His view and thought at the time of 20 years old are expressed here. 本稿は，｢官立学校」の意味内容が，1870年代から1880年代にかけての教育関連法令制定過程においてどのように変遷したかを考えるものである。1872年の学制章程下に，「官立学校」は文部省の経費支出を根拠に広範な概念として登場し，続いて「公学」とも同義とみなされた。1874年，概念上の混乱を解決するために，「官立学校」｢公立学校｣｢私立学校」という三つの学校の種類とその要件が初めて規定された。この布達が戦前唯一の「官立学校｣ 規定となる。｢官立学校」の要件には文部省による設立経費支弁と文部省による直轄とが挙げられた。これを廃止した1879年の教育令は「公立学校｣「私立学校」の要件を定めたが，｢官立学校」については，不干渉の立場に加え，文部省以外の省庁の教育機関の位置づけ，および経費や管理をめぐる概念規定の難しさから，定義が放棄された。1883年の徴兵令改正を契機とし，私学同志社などにより，官立公立学校と同様の猶予特典の付与を求める運動が起こった。その過程で，｢(そもそも定義のない)官立学校に準じる」という概念が生まれた。1884年には財政難に苦しむ府県の教育行政を助けるべく構想された「府県連合学校｣を官立なみに処遇するという「准官立学校」案が提示され，適用対象は私立学校にも拡大された。｢准官立学校」は，府県側あるいは私立学校側が経費を支弁するが，文部卿の直管であり，経費支弁主体と管理主体とを分離した点に新しさがある。｢准官立学校｣ 案の発想は，1886年「諸学校令」中の中学校令による高等中学校制度および諸学校通則により実現した。｢准官立」の名称は公式には用いられなかったが，私学の運動の中では引き続き使われた。以上のように，｢官立学校」の輪郭は不鮮明であったが，それゆえに「准官立｣ という独特な「隠れた制度」を周縁に生み出した点に，近代日本教育制度形成期の特質が認められる。, In the School System Law (Gakusei Shotei 1872), "Government School" was understood in a broad sense. In 1874, the Education Ministry Ordinance defined the three kinds of school, "Government School", "Public School" and "Private School". The Educational Law (Kyoiku Rei 1879) abolished the Ordinance and defined "Public School" and "Private School" but remained "Government School" not to be defined. Some private schools such as Doshisha, began the petition to gain the right to be exempted from Conscription for a while "like Government School". The Department of Education planned the "Quasi Government School" System. It was defrayed by some Prefectural Treasury or the Private fund but placed under the jurisdiction of Minister of Education. The idea was realized as Higher Middle School System or in "General Regulations for Schools" under the new School Ordinances (Sho Gakko Rei 1886) though "Quasi Government School" was not used as the legal term. The Implication of "Government School" was unclear throughout 1870's - 1880's so it produced "Quasi Government School" around itself as a hidden system.

同志社神学校の初代神学館、「三十番教室」に続く第2代目神学館は、クラーク神学館である。その設立経緯については、本誌前々号(第70巻第1号)で述べたので、本稿はそれ以降の経緯について、検証する。すなわち設計から竣工に至るまでの消息を明らかにする。設計者はドイツ人のリヒャルト・ゼール、大工は京都の小嶋佐兵衛である。工事着工、定礎式、竣工式、さらには追加寄附、寄付者への感謝状などについて、J . D . デイヴィスの手紙などを利用して、つぶさに紹介する。さらには、意外にもL . L.ジェーンズの落とす影が見られることにも触れている。, The Byron Stone Clarke Memorial Hall was the second building constructed for the School of Theology, Doshisha University in Kyoto, Japan. It was built in 1893 through a special gift of $11,500, which Mr. and Mrs. Byron Clarke donated to the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. 新島襄の医学校設立構想を、1880年代初頭における国および京都府の医学教育政策の中で捉えることを目的とした。1882年の京都府会は、府医学校への地方税支弁全廃を可決するが、その背後には、私立医学校と手を組んだ新島に、府医学校を引き継がせることができるとの判断があった。知事の原案執行によりこの目論見は実現しなかったが、医学校計画はアメリカン・ボード宣教医ベリーも加わって、京都民立医学社構想として展開していく。, 論説

同志社大学今出川キャンパスのランドマークと言えば、クラーク記念館(旧神学館)である。にもかかわらず、従来は「クラークって誰」であった。彼は、プリンストン大学の出身者で、同大学院に入学してまもない1891年1月に急死した。聖書を愛読する会衆派の信徒であった。息子の死を悼んだ両親、とりわけ母親が、11,500ドルを寄附して、建てられたのが、この神学館であった。肖像写真など新資料がいくつか入手できたうえ、学生生活の一端や、家族関係や死因、墓の所在地も判明した。, The Byron Stone Clarke Memorial Hall is the second theological hall of the School of Theology, Doshisha University, Kyoto, Japan. It was erected in 1893 to commemorate a special gift of $11,500 from Mr. and Mrs. Clarke to Doshisha through the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. Using new materials and data, including portraits, his career, and his family's graves, this paper clarifies the identity of Clarke that has been kept in the dark for such a long time. 同志社神学校の初代神学館、「三十番教室」は、その実態が究明されたことはない。2代目神学館のクラーク神学館も設立経緯については、おおよそのことは明白であるが、なぜ、ニューヨーク州ブルックリン市(現ニューヨーク市)在住のクラーク夫妻が、多額の建築資金を同志社に捧げたのかは、不詳であった。これには新島の死去に伴う同志社校友会による新島記念神学館新築計画やアメリカン・ボードのN. G. クラーク主事(N. G. Clark)の働きが深く絡んでいる。つまり、新島は死後、「ふたりのクラーク」の心を突き動かして、神学館建設を実現させたと言えるのである。本稿は、初代神学館、ならびに2代目神学館着工に至るまでの消息や設計者の動向などをアメリカン・ボードの新資料を駆使して明白にしようとするものである。同時に研究上の課題をも指摘する。, Through the use of the mission papers housed in the Houghton Library, Harvard University, this paper will investigate the details from the buying of the first theological hall, the No.30 Classroom to the raising of the second one, the Byron Stone Clarke Memorial Hall as well as the trends of the architect. 片岡健吉社長と下村孝太郎社長はアメリカン・ボードの評価ではすぐれた指導者だったが、惜しいことに社長職は共に長続きしなかった。前者は病死し、後者は日露戦争下の産業上の要請に縛られた。下村社長のとき、これまで敵対してきた校友会、組合教会、同志社理事会の三者は和解に漕ぎつけることに成功した。, The American Board regarded Presidents Kataoka and Shimomura as good administrators,but their tenures were lamentably short due to untimely death and the urgent military/industrial necessity. 小崎が社長に選ばれた時、彼は「宣教師たちからも完全な承認を得たのに何故、アメリカン・ボードと手を切らねばならなかったのか。「古い関係」を切って「新しい関係」を築きたかったからである。アメリカン・ボードの代表団が来日し、話し合いがあったが、分裂に終わった。同志社は外国人の管理から独立と自由を獲得し、宣教師は正統主義キリスト教の道から逸脱したと思われる学校と完全に手を切った。困難な経営と聖書削除の問題で小崎は辞任した。, When Kozaki was elected, missionaries "heartily welcome" him as principal. They, however, could not have good relationships. American Board sent deligation to Japan to talk about three items. One of them was religion of Doshisha. The deligation asked Kozaki to make declaration of faith but he rejected it. The talk was not successful and separation came. Doshisha was independent of American Board but the management was hard and Kozaki resigned.
