Abstract

A concern for closer interactions between the school and the community has been part of the democratisation process in British education. Different patterns have emerged, based on a humanist and reformist view of society, or on a more radical and socially-committed approach. The extended schools concept draws on this tradition but signals a change of direction at a theoretical and political level. An examination of the extended schools programme reveals large discrepancies between an “inclusive” discourse taking up the community ideal and policies aiming first and foremost at tackling social ills.

Abstract

Si la formule d'Yves Lacoste ("La géographie, ça sert, d'abord à faire la guerre") a fait date et a déjà connu de multiples usages et détournements, la retourner dans le cadre des études napoléoniennes dépasse de loin l'exercice du clin d'oeil en ce qu'elle ouvre des perspectives neuves et essentielles sur le rapport des Français à l'Empire. L'ambition du présent article est en effet d'appréhender la façon dont les contemporains de Napoléon ont dû s'adapter aux opérations militaires et aux transformations géopolitiques en cours dans l'espace français et européen. Les redécoupages à l'oeuvre n'ont-ils pas des répercussions très concrètes sur l'horizon des carrières ou sur les circuits économiques ? Le fait est que le départ sur les routes de l'Europe de dizaines d'hommes a entraîné une demande sociale d'informations géographiques à laquelle répondent partiellement la correspondance des soldats ou la publication d'atlas mis à jour, et que le pouvoir napoléonien tente d'orienter à des fins de propagande. A questions nouvelles, sources renouvelées : cet article s'emploie à identifier les repères spatiaux des Français et leur actualisation imparfaite en tirant profit, à titre qualitatif, des enseignements de l'iconographie, des lettres privées, des rumeurs ou des archives des pratiques éducatives.

Abstract

International audience; Viruses depend on the host cell translation machinery for their replication, and one common strategy is the presence of internal ribosome entry sites (IRESs) in the viral RNAs, using different sets of host translation initiation factors. The hepatitis C virus (HCV) IRES binds eukaryotic translation initiation factor 3 (eIF3), but the exact functional role of the eIF3 complex and of its subunits remains to be precisely defined. Toward this goal, here we focused on eIF3 subunit e. We used an in vitro assay combining a ribosome-depleted rabbit reticulocyte lysate and ribosomes prepared from HeLa or Huh-7.5 cells transfected with either control or eIF3e siRNAs. eIF3e silencing reduced translation mediated by the 5'UTR of various cellular genes and HCV-like IRESs. However, this effect was not observed with the bona fide HCV IRES. Silencing of eIF3e reduced the intracellular levels of the c, d, and l subunits of eIF3 and their association with the eIF3 core subunit a. A pulldown analysis of eIF3 subunits associated with the HCV IRES disclosed similar effects and that the a subunit is critical for binding to the HCV IRES. Carrying out HCV infections of control and eIF3e-silenced Huh-7.5 cells, we found that in agreement with the in vitro findings, eIF3e silencing does not reduce HCV replication and viral protein expression. We conclude that unlike for host cellular mRNAs, the entire eIF3 is not required for HCV RNA translation, favoring viral expression under conditions of low eIF3e levels.

Abstract

For a given closed convex planar curve $\gamma$ with smooth boundary and a given $p>0$, the string construction yields a family of nested billiards $\Gamma_p$ for which $\gamma$ is a caustic. The action of the corresponding reflections $T_p$ on the tangent lines to $\gamma$ induces their actions on the tangency points: a family of string diffeomorphisms $\mathcal T_p:\gamma\to\gamma$. We say that $\gamma$ has string Poritsky property, if it admits a parameter $t$ (called Poritsky string length) in which all the transformations $\mathcal T_p$ with small $p$ are translations $t\mapsto t+c_p$. These definitions also make sense for germs of curves $\gamma$. Poritsky property is closely related to the famous Birkhoff Conjecture. It is classically known that each conic has string Poritsky property. In 1950 H.Poritsky proved the converse: each germ of planar curve with Poritsky property is a conic. In the present paper we extend this Poritsky's result to germs of curves on simply connected complete surfaces with Riemannian metric of constant curvature and to outer billiards on all these surfaces. In the general case of curves with Poritsky property on any two-dimensional surface with Riemannian metric we prove the two following results: 1) the Poritsky string length coincides with Lazutkin parameter, introduced by V.F.Lazutkin in 1973, up to additive and multiplicative constants; 2) a germ of $C^5$-smooth curve with Poritsky property is uniquely determined by its 4-th jet. In the Euclidean case the latter statement follows from the above-mentioned Poritsky's result., Comment: 75 pages, 8 figures. Abstract

A caustic of a strictly convex planar bounded billiard is a smooth curve whose tangent lines are reflected from the billiard boundary to its tangent lines. The famous Birkhoff Conjecture states that if the billiard boundary has an inner neighborhood foliated by closed caustics, then the billiard is an ellipse. It was studied by many mathematicians, including H.Poritsky, M.Bialy, S.Bolotin, A.Mironov, V.Kaloshin, A.Sorrentino and others. In the present paper we study its following generalized dual-projective version stated by S.Tabachnikov. Consider a closed smooth strictly convex planar curve γ equipped with a dual billiard structure: a family of projective involutions acting on its projective tangent lines and fixing the tangency points. Suppose that its outer neighborhood admits a foliation by closed curves (including γ) such that the involution of each tangent line permutes its intersection points with every leaf. Tabachnikov's Conjecture states that then the curve γ is an ellipse and the leaves are ellipses forming a pencil. We prove Tabachnikov's Conjecture in the case, when the curve is C4-smooth and the foliation admits a rational first integral. To this end, we show that each C4-smooth germ γ of planar curve carrying a rationally integrable dual billiard structure is a conic and classify all the rationally integrable dual billiards on conics. They include the dual billiards induced by pencils of conics, two infinite series of exotic dual billiards and five more exotic ones.

Abstract

We are interested in path-dependent semilinear PDEs, where the derivatives are of Gâteaux type in specific directions [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], being the kernel functions of a Volterra Gaussian process [Formula: see text]. Under some conditions on [Formula: see text] and the coefficients of the PDE, we prove existence and uniqueness of a decoupled mild solution, a notion introduced in a previous paper by the authors. We also show that the solution of the PDE can be represented through BSDEs where the forward (underlying) process is [Formula: see text].

Abstract

International audience; Out of the need to conceptualise the reality in the world, and more specifically factual information, from the point of view of historical research, an extension of CIDOC CRM for semantic data for humanities and social sciences has been developed: Semantic Data for Humanities and Social Sciences (SDHSS) (https://ontome.net/project/8). The ontological commitment is therefore related to the domain of discourse of history but insofar as history, as a discipline that studies the life of humans and societies in the past, is interested in all the different aspects of social, economic, political, religious, literary and cultural life, the scope of this extension could be defined as the whole of social and human life, apprehended from the descriptive point of view, and global approach to reality, that characterises historical research.Inspiring previous work and literature, in addition to the modelling experience developed in the symogih.org project during more than 10 years and the robust object-oriented approach developed by the CIDOC CRM SIG, is the one accomplished in the Wonderweb European project which produced the DOLCE and DnS foundational ontologies. The general epistemological approach is inspired by the work of Evandro Agazzi about realist objectivity, distinguishing between things and scientific objects, and more or less recent developments in social sciences (sociology and social psychology) especially with regard to the fundamental notion of social representations and collective intentionality. These are the epistemological foundations of the top-level ontology proposed for factual information modelling as an integration of CIDOC CRM trying to comply as much as possible with its modelling principles and to harmonise with the existing classes and properties.The SDHSS CIDOC CRM extension is in fact an ecosystem of extensions, split into a top-level one (the present one) and different namespaces (each belonging to a subproject of the main one) in order to provide a more flexible development, and to allow the management of sub-domains of historical research, and eventually of other disciplines, by experts belonging to different research communities. In these namespaces, new classes and properties allow to clarify the modelling of the reality studied from the point of view of historical research intended in the general perspective outlined above.In this paper, after presenting the general view of the SDHSS ontology and the methodology on which it is based, I will apply it to the domain of University history and academic careers, in order to provide an example of application of the modelling methodology in the context of the planned conference. For doing this I will start from the classes and properties present in the symogih.org project concerning University history (cf. the http://siprojuris.symogih.org/ project) and the conceptualization proposed in the Early Modern Professorial Career Patterns Ontology (https://github.com/pcp-on-web/ontology). This will allow to test an integration of different conceptualizations, in order to provide data interoperability, and to identify open questions and issues that need to be solved.

Abstract

International audience; This talk addresses the issue of interoperability of data generated by historical research in order to make them re-usable for new research agendas (as a realisation of the FAIR principles). The reasons for adopting the CIDOC CRM as a core ontology for this field, but extending it with some relevant, missing high-level classes, will be discussed while taking advantage of the methodological tools provided by the foundational ontologies DOLCE and DnS. Finally, the talk will show how collaborative data modelling carried out in the ontology management environment OntoME (ontome.net) makes it possible to elaborate a communal fine-grained and adaptive ontology of the domain.

Abstract

International audience; Cette intervention est consacrée à la question de l'interopérabilité des données générées par la recherche historique afin de les rendre réutilisables pour de nouveaux programmes de recherche (comme condition de réalisation des principes FAIR). Les raisons de l'adoption du CIDOC CRM comme ontologie de base pour ce domaine seront exposées mais aussi la nécessité d'intégrer ce modèle en l'étendant grâce à un certain nombre de classes de haut niveau indispensables pour le traitement de la réalité sociale. L'outillage conceptuel des ontologies fondationnelles DOLCE et DnS permet ainsi de concevoir une architecture ontologique générale adaptée à fournir un cadre conceptuel dans lequel pourra s'inscrire toute une série d'extensions proches des sous-domaines de la recherche historique, et plus généralement des sciences humaines et sociales, qui seront ainsi intégrées dans un écosystème favorisant l'interopérabilité sémantique des données. L'exposé montrera comment la modélisation collaborative effectuée dans l'environnement de gestion d'ontologie OntoME (ontome.net) permet d'élaborer une ontologie communautaire modulaire et adaptée aux différents sous-domaines de la recherche.

International audience; La conférence porte sur les collections des bibliothèques des anciennes Ecoles normales (1880-1940) destinées aux chercheurs en Histoire de l'Education. Elle traite des bibliothèques des anciennes Ecoles normales d'Instituteurs et d'Institutrices de l'Académie de Grenoble labellisées ColleX (pour Collections d'excellence), et plus particulièrement celles de Bonneville (Haute-Savoie), Valence (Drôme), Chambéry (Savoie) et Grenoble (Isère) aujourd'hui conservées par les bibliothèques de l'Université Grenoble Alpes. Elle donne le bilan des travaux de conservation réalisés depuis 2017 sur ces collections par les bibliothèques universitaires, définit les thématiques de Recherche qui pourront être poursuivies en Histoire et en Education sur ces fonds, la richesse et la singularité de ceux-ci, annonce le colloque en Education qui se tiendra à Bonneville (Haute-Savoie) en novembre 2022.

International audience; Résumé - version courte :L’histoire des relations entre l’Université de Grenoble et le Muséum est faite de rivalités et de saines collaborations. Le Cabinet d’histoire naturelle, ancêtre du Muséum, est né en 1773 pour pallier l’absence d’université scientifique à Grenoble. Les relations du Muséum avec l’Université sont houleuses à l’installation de celle-ci au XIXe siècle, chaque institution campant sur ses prérogatives, le Muséum rappelant son antériorité dans l’histoire des institutions scientifiques grenobloises, l’Université arguant de ses missions nouvelles. La fin du XXe siècle va les rapprocher avec le travail de collaboration que vont entreprendre conservateurs et enseignants-chercheurs pour l’enrichissement, la complétude des collections du Muséum et le démarrage des travaux sur leur histoire. Résumé - version longue :L’histoire des relations entre l’Université de Grenoble et le Muséum est faite de rivalités et de saines collaborations. Le Cabinet d’histoire naturelle, ancêtre de l’actuel Muséum, est né en 1773 de la volonté seule des Grenoblois de se doter d’une institution scientifique, répondant ainsi à l’absence d’université scientifique à Grenoble. Ce caractère d’autonomie inscrit dans les origines mêmes de l’institution muséale va surgir au moindre conflit entre le Muséum et l’Université. A cela s’ajoutera pour le Muséum la fierté d’avoir compté parmi ses fondateurs et ses pionniers de grands noms : des personnages de l’entourage de Stendhal, le botaniste Dominique Villars à la renommée internationale, puis, à la génération suivante, les frères Champollion, eux-mêmes gardes du cabinet. Si quelques cours seront effectivement donnés au cabinet d’histoire naturelle par son premier garde dès sa création et ce jusqu’en 1807, c’est essentiellement au Jardin botanique de Grenoble qu’un enseignement sera dispensé, dans la plus pure tradition rousseauiste, jusqu’en 1847.Les conflits naissent à partir de 1830 avec l’installation de la toute jeune Faculté des sciences et la répartition des missions entre les institutions, à Grenoble comme dans les autres universités françaises : à l’Université l’enseignement et la délivrance de diplômes, au Muséum les collections et leur conservation. On assiste cependant à Grenoble, autour de la personnalité du conservateur Hippolyte Bouteille (1805-1881), à une certaine perméabilité entre les deux institutions, à une tendance au glissement des collections du Muséum vers l’Université, le conservateur visant avant toute chose un poste de professeur à l’Université. Les conflits vont durer jusque dans les années 1850. Ce sont alors trois maires de Grenoble (tous de tendances différentes), très jaloux de leur Muséum, qui vont en prendre la défense : Artus Copin de Miribel, Hugues Berriat et Frédéric Taulier. Le minéralogiste Emile Gueymard, à la fois doyen de la Faculté des Sciences en 1846 et ancien collaborateur au Cabinet minéralogique apaisera les tensions en faisant le choix de céder sa magnifique collection minéralogique du Dauphiné et des Alpes au Cabinet, optant pour la transformation de l’institution muséale en un muséum : le Muséum de Grenoble était né.A la fin du XXe siècle, avec la fonction d’animation et de valorisation des collections, de nouveaux liens se tissent entre conservateurs et enseignants-chercheurs. On assiste alors à Grenoble, autour des collections du chirurgien de marine Louis Arnoux (1814-1867) et de son voyage de circumnavigation et d’exploration dans le Pacifique Sud, au don par l’Université de ses collections océaniennes ornithologiques qui viennent ainsi compléter au Muséum de Grenoble les collections ethnographiques du navigateur.

Abstract

We consider planar maps with three boundaries, colloquially called pairs of pants. In the case of bipartite maps with controlled face degrees, a simple expression for their generating function was found by Eynard and proved bijectively by Collet and Fusy. In this paper, we obtain an even simpler formula for \emph{tight} pairs of pants, namely for maps whose boundaries have minimal length in their homotopy class. We follow a bijective approach based on the slice decomposition, which we extend by introducing new fundamental building blocks called bigeodesic triangles and diangles, and by working on the universal cover of the triply punctured sphere. Abstract

International audience; Tiling is a crucial program transformation, adjusting the ops-to-bytes balance of codes to improve locality. Like parallelism, it can be applied at multiple levels. Allowing tile sizes to be symbolic parameters at compile time has many benefits, including efficient autotuning, and run-time adaptability to system variations. For polyhedral programs, parametric tiling in its full generality is known to be non-linear, breaking the mathematical closure properties of the polyhedral model. Most compilation tools therefore either perform fixed size tiling, or apply parametric tiling in only the final, code generation step.We introduce monoparametric tiling, a restricted parametric tiling transformation. We show that, despite being parametric, it retains the closure properties of the polyhedral model. We first prove that applying monoparametric partitioning (i) to a polyhedron yields a union of polyhedra with modulo conditions, and (ii) to an affine function produces a piecewise-affine function with modulo conditions. We then use these properties to show how to tile an entire polyhedral program. Our monoparametric tiling is general enough to handle tiles with arbitrary tile shapes that can tessellate the iteration space (e.g., hexagonal, trapezoidal, etc). This enables a wide range of polyhedral analyses and transformations to be applied.

Abstract

Optogenetics enables genome manipulations with high spatiotemporal resolution, opening exciting possibilities for fundamental and applied biological research. Here, we report the development of LiCre, a novel light-inducible Cre recombinase. LiCre is made of a single flavin-containing protein comprising the AsLOV2 photoreceptor domain of Avena sativa fused to a Cre variant carrying destabilizing mutations in its N-terminal and C-terminal domains. LiCre can be activated within minutes of illumination with blue light without the need of additional chemicals. When compared to existing photoactivatable Cre recombinases based on two split units, LiCre displayed faster and stronger activation by light as well as a lower residual activity in the dark. LiCre was efficient both in yeast, where it allowed us to control the production of β-carotene with light, and human cells. Given its simplicity and performances, LiCre is particularly suited for fundamental and biomedical research, as well as for controlling industrial bioprocesses., eLife digest In a biologist’s toolkit, the Cre protein holds a special place. Naturally found in certain viruses, this enzyme recognises and modifies specific genetic sequences, creating changes that switch on or off whatever gene is close by. Genetically engineering cells or organisms so that they carry Cre and its target sequences allows scientists to control the activation of a given gene, often in a single tissue or organ. However, this relies on the ability to activate the Cre protein ‘on demand’ once it is in the cells of interest. One way to do so is to split the enzyme into two pieces, which can then reassemble when exposed to blue light. Yet, this involves the challenging step of introducing both parts separately into a tissue. Instead, Duplus-Bottin et al. engineered LiCre, a new system where a large section of the Cre protein is fused to a light sensor used by oats to detect their environment. LiCre is off in the dark, but it starts to recognize and modify Cre target sequences when exposed to blue light. Duplus-Bottin et al. then assessed how LiCre compares to the two-part Cre system in baker's yeast and human kidney cells. This showed that the new protein is less ‘incorrectly’ active in the dark, and can switch on faster under blue light. The improved approach could give scientists a better tool to study the role of certain genes at precise locations and time points, but also help them to harness genetic sequences for industry or during gene therapy.

Abstract

International audience; This article deals with the emergence of a specific mating preference pattern called homogamy in a population. Individuals are characterized by their genotype at two haploid loci, and the population dynamics is modelled by a non-linear birth and-death process. The first locus codes for a phenotype, while the second locus codes for homogamy defined with respect to the first locus: two individuals are more (resp. less) likely to reproduce with each other if they carry the same (resp. a different) trait at the first locus. Initial resident individuals do not feature homogamy, and we are interested in the probability and time of invasion of a mutant presenting this characteristic under a large population assumption. To this aim, we study the trajectory of the birth-and-death process during three phases: growth of the mutant, coexistence of the two types, and extinction of the resident. We couple the birth-and-death process with simpler processes, like mul-tidimensional branching processes or dynamical systems, and study the latter ones in order to control the trajectory and duration of each phase.

Abstract

We present a solution of the algebraic version of Birkhoff Conjecture on integrable billiards. Namely we show that every polynomially integrable real bounded convex planar billiard with smooth boundary is an ellipse. We extend this result to billiards with piecewise-smooth and not necessarily convex boundary on arbitrary two-dimensional surface of constant curvature: plane, sphere, Lobachevsky (hyperbolic) plane; each of them being modeled as a plane or a (pseudo-) sphere in $\mathbb R^3$ equipped with appropriate quadratic form. Namely, we show that a billiard is polynomially integrable, if and only if its boundary is a union of confocal conical arcs and appropriate geodesic segments. We also present a complexification of these results. These are joint results of Mikhail Bialy, Andrey Mironov and the author. The proof is split into two parts. The first part is given by Bialy and Mironov in their two joint papers. They considered the tautological projection of the boundary to $\mathbb{RP}^2$ and studied its orthogonal-polar dual curve, which is piecewise algebraic, by S.V.Bolotin's theorem. By their arguments and another Bolotin's theorem, it suffices to show that each non-linear complex irreducible component of the dual curve is a conic. They have proved that all its singularities and inflection points (if any) lie in the projectivized zero locus of the corresponding quadratic form on $\mathbb C^3$. The present paper provides the second part of the proof: we show that each above irreducible component is a conic and finish the solution of the Algebraic Birkhoff Conjecture in constant curvature., To appear in the Journal of the European Mathematical Society (JEMS), 69 pages, 2 figures. Abstract

International audience; Between researches on the first divorces of the nineteenth century and sociodemographic researches on current divorces (particularly from the 1960s), historical studies on judicial disunity, and especially on the disunited, are rare. But before embarking on a history of the separated and divorced, it is important to set out a broad framework for understanding the evolution of separations and divorces in France from the Revolution to 1975. From aggregated data at the country and counties scales, the aim of this paper is to trace a first quantitative history of disunity. Finer researches, at the individual level and therefore often limited at the spatial or the temporal level can then be positioned in this framework of analysis. This research on the long-term will provide information on the evolution of the number of disunions in two centuries and that of the separating or divorcing couples to understand what can be the brakes or the motivations to the demand of disunion, as well as their temporal and gender variations. Throughout the history of disunity, it is a new approach to the evolution of gender relations and the place of women in the family and society that is targeted as well as a better understanding of the mechanisms that lead to the adoption of a new behavior hitherto little used or even prohibited.; Entre les recherches sur les premiers divorces du xixe siècle et les recherches sociodémographiques sur les divorces actuels (en particulier à partir des années 1960), les études historiques sur les désunions judiciaires, et surtout sur les désunis, sont rares. Mais, avant d’entreprendre une histoire des séparés et des divorcés, il est important de poser un vaste cadre de compréhension de l’évolution des séparations et des divorces en France de la Révolution à 1975. À partir de données agrégées à l’échelle du pays et parfois des départements, l’idée de cet article est de tracer une première histoire quantitative des désunions qui servira de cadre d’analyse dans lequel des recherches plus fines, à l’échelle individuelle et donc souvent limitées au niveau spatial ou temporel, pourront s’inscrire. Cette analyse de longue durée permettra de connaître l’évolution du nombre des désunions en deux siècles et celles des couples qui se séparent ou divorcent pour comprendre quels peuvent être les freins ou les motivations à la demande de désunion, leurs variations temporelle et genrée. À travers l’histoire des désunions, c’est une nouvelle approche de l’évolution des rapports de genre et de la place des femmes dans la famille et la société qui est visée ainsi qu’une meilleure compréhension des mécanismes qui amènent à l’adoption d’un nouveau comportement jusqu’alors peu usité ou même interdit.

Abstract

By a classical result of Darboux, a foliation of a Riemannian surface has the Graves property (also known as the strong evolution property) if and only if the foliation comes from a Liouville net. A similar result of Blaschke says that a pair of orthogonal foliations has the Ivory property if and only if they form a Liouville net. Let us say that a geodesically convex curve on a Riemannian surface has the Poritsky property if it can be parametrized in such a way that all of its string diffeomorphisms are shifts with respect to this parameter. In 1950, Poritsky has shown that the only closed plane curves with this property are ellipses. In the present article we show that a curve on a Riemannian surface has the Poritsky property if and only if it is a coordinate curve of a Liouville net. We also recall Blaschke's derivation of the Liouville property from the Ivory property and his proof of Weihnacht's theorem: the only Liouville nets in the plane are nets of confocal conics and their degenerations. This suggests the following generalization of Birkhoff's conjecture: If an interior neighborhood of a closed geodesically convex curve on a Riemannian surface is foliated by billiard caustics, then the metric in the neighborhood is Liouville, and the curve is one of the coordinate lines., Comment: 28 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

89 pages; In this paper we review the formal derivation of different classes of kinetic equations for long range potentials. We consider suitable scaling limits for Lorentz and Rayleigh gases as well as interacting particle systems whose dynamics can be approximated by means of kinetic equations. The resulting kinetic equations are the Landau and the Balescu-Lenard equations. In the derivation of the kinetic equations particular emphasis is made in the fact that all the kinetic regimes can be obtained approximating the dynamics of the interacting particle systems by the evolution of a single particle in a random force field with a friction term which is due to the interaction with the surrounding particles. The case of particles interacting by means of Coulombian potentials as well as the cutoffs which yield the so-called Coulombian logarithm are discussed in detail.

Abstract

25 pages; Reflections from planar curves act by symplectomorphisms on the space of oriented lines with respect to the canonical symplectic form. We consider an arbitrary planar curve $\gamma$ that is either a germ, or a strictly convex closed curve. In the case of a germ we show that reflections from its small deformations and their inverse transformations generate a pseudogroup that is dense in the pseudogroup of symplectomorphisms between simply connected subdomains of an appropriate domain in the space of oriented lines. In the case of a global strictly convex closed curve we prove a similar density statement in the pseudogroup of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms between subdomains of the phase cylinder: the space of oriented lines intersecting the given curve transversally.

Abstract

International audience; Le Transport Optimal entre données structurées pour l'apprentissage a fait l'objet de nombreusesétudes, notamment pour traiter des tâches de classification ou d'apprentissage par transfert entre graphes. Dans cet article, nous introduisons la distance de Wasserstein de diffusion (DW) qui généralise la distance classique de Wasserstein aux graphes attribués non-orientés connexes. DW exploite la diffusion de la chaleur sur le laplacien du graphe pour capturer de l'information non seulement au niveau des attributs des noeuds maiségalement sur la structure du graphe. Nouś etudions le comportement asymptotique de DW et montrons que cette distance peutêtre directement exploitée dans la distance Fused Gro-mov Wasserstein, récemment proposée dans la littérature, donnant ainsi naissanceà une nouvelle famille de distances entre graphes, appelée DifFused Gromov Wasserstein. Nous montrons que ces dernières permettent de significativement améliorer l'état de l'art sur des tâches d'adaptation de domaine sur graphes par transport optimal.

Abstract

Jack Ralite a été maire adjoint chargé de la culture et de l’éducation à Aubervilliers entre mars 1959 et 1984 puis maire de 1984 à 2003. Il a contribué à faire de cette banlieue un territoire de décentralisation culturelle pionnier. Il est devenu député de la Seine-Saint-Denis en 1973 puis sénateur à partir de 1995. Entretemps, il a fait partie des quatre ministres communistes du gouvernement de François Mitterrand. Il s’est principalement mobilisé pour défendre l’audiovisuel public et la création théâtrale. Lors des États Généraux de la Culture (après 1986) il a œuvré pour la défense des « droits de la culture ». Notre propos consiste à questionner l’itinéraire d’un acteur culturel communiste, à situer ses conceptions de la culture parmi celles des gauches contemporaines à un moment particulièrement marqué en France par le développement des chaines privées de télévision et par l’essor des luttes pour défendre l’audiovisuel public. Jack Ralite was the deputy mayor in charge of culture and education in the city of Aubervilliers, France between March 1959 and 1984 and then mayor from 1984 to 2003. He contributed to making this suburb a pioneering area of cultural decentralization. He became member of Parliament for Seine-Saint-Denis in 1973 and then became a senator in 1995. In the meantime, he was one of the four communist ministers in the government of François Mitterrand. He was mainly mobilized to defend the public audiovisual and theater creation. During the “Etats Généraux de la Culture” (after 1986) his work aimed at defending the “rights of culture”. Our aim is to question the itinerary of a communist cultural actor, to position his conceptions about culture among those of contemporary leftists at a time particularly marked in France by the development of private television channels and by the increasing struggles to defend the public audiovisual.

Abstract

Optimal Transport (OT) for structured data has received much attention in the machine learning community, especially for addressing graph classification or graph transfer learning tasks. In this paper, we present the Diffusion Wasserstein (\(\mathtt {DW}\)) distance, as a generalization of the standard Wasserstein distance to undirected and connected graphs where nodes are described by feature vectors. \(\mathtt {DW}\) is based on the Laplacian exponential kernel and benefits from the heat diffusion to catch both structural and feature information from the graphs. We further derive lower/upper bounds on \(\mathtt {DW}\) and show that it can be directly plugged into the Fused Gromov Wasserstein (\(\mathtt {FGW}\)) distance that has been recently proposed, leading - for free - to a DifFused Gromov Wasserstein distance (\(\mathtt {DFGW}\)) that allows a significant performance boost when solving graph domain adaptation tasks.

Abstract

The decomposition of soil organic matter (SOM) is a critical process in global terrestrial ecosystems. SOM decomposition is driven by micro-organisms that cooperate by secreting costly extracellular (exo-)enzymes. This raises a fundamental puzzle: the stability of microbial decomposition in spite of its evolutionary vulnerability to “cheaters”—mutant strains that reap the benefits of cooperation while paying a lower cost. Resolving this puzzle requires a multi-scale eco-evolutionary model that captures the spatio-temporal dynamics of molecule-molecule, molecule-cell, and cell-cell interactions. The analysis of such a model reveals local extinctions, microbial dispersal, and limited soil diffusivity as key factors of the evolutionary stability of microbial decomposition. At the scale of whole-ecosystem function, soil diffusivity influences the evolution of exo-enzyme production, which feeds back to the average SOM decomposition rate and stock. Microbial adaptive evolution may thus be an important factor in the response of soil carbon fluxes to global environmental change., Abs et al. develop a multi-scale model to explain the evolution of microbial cooperation driving the decomposition of soil organic matter. Their model shows that the evolutionary stability of decomposition depends on a combination of local extinctions, microbial dispersal, and limited soil diffusivity.

Abstract

International audience; Among the different indicators that quantify the spread of an epidemic such as the on-going COVID-19, stands first the reproduction number which measures how many people can be contaminated by an infected person. In order to permit the monitoring of the evolution of this number, a new estimation procedure is proposed here, assuming a well-accepted model for current incidence data, based on past observations. The novelty of the proposed approach is twofold: 1) the estimation of the reproduction number is achieved by convex optimization within a proximal-based inverse problem formulation, with constraints aimed at promoting piecewise smoothness; 2) the approach is developed in a multivariate setting, allowing for the simultaneous handling of multiple time series attached to different geographical regions, together with a spatial (graph-based) regularization of their evolutions in time. The effectiveness of the approach is first supported by simulations, and two main applications to real COVID-19 data are then discussed. The first one refers to the comparative evolution of the reproduction number for a number of countries, while the second one focuses on French departments and their joint analysis, leading to dynamic maps revealing the temporal co-evolution of their reproduction numbers.

Abstract

We consider two nested billiards in $\mathbb R^d$, $d\geq3$, with $C^2$-smooth strictly convex boundaries. We prove that if the corresponding actions by reflections on the space of oriented lines commute, then the billiards are confocal ellipsoids. This together with the previous analogous result of the author in two dimensions solves completely the Commuting Billiard Conjecture due to Sergei Tabachnikov. The main result is deduced from the classical theorem due to Marcel Berger saying that in higher dimensions only quadrics may have caustics. We also prove versions of Berger's theorem and the main result for billiards in spaces of constant curvature: space forms., Comment: 21 pages. Abstract

The paper deals with a three-parameter family of special double confluent Heun equations that was introduced and studied by V.M.Buchstaber and S.I.Tertychnyi as an equivalent presentation of a model of overdamped Josephson junction in superconductivity. The parameters are $l,\lambda,\mu\in\mathbb R$. Buchstaber and Tertychnyi described those parameter values, for which the corresponding equation has a polynomial solution. They have shown that for $\mu\neq0$ this happens exactly when $l\in\mathbb N$ and the parameters $(\lambda,\mu)$ lie on an algebraic curve $\Gamma_l\subset\mathbb C^2_{(\lambda,\mu)}$ called the $l$-th spectral curve and defined as zero locus of determinant of a remarkable three-diagonal $l\times l$-matrix. They studied the real spectral curves and obtained important results with applications to phase-lock areas in model of Josephson junction, which is a family of dynamical systems on 2-torus. In the present paper we prove irreducibility of complex spectral curves. We also calculate their genera for $l\leqslant20$ and present a conjecture on general genus formula. We apply the irreducibility result to the phase-lock areas, which are those level sets of the rotation number function $\rho$ on the parameter space of the above-mentioned family of dynamical systems that have non-empty interiors. The family of their boundaries is a countable union of analytic surfaces. We show that, unexpectedly, its complexification is a complex analytic subset consisting of just four irreducible components, and we describe them. We present a Monotonicity Conjecture on the evolution of the phase-lock area portraits and a partial positive result towards its confirmation., Comment: To appear in the Journal of Dynamical and Control Systems. 50 pages, 17 figures. Abstract

We design two incremental algorithms for computing an inclusion-minimal completion of an arbitrary graph into a cograph. The first one is able to do so while providing an additional property which is crucial in practice to obtain inclusion-minimal completions using as few edges as possible : it is able to compute a minimum-cardinality completion of the neighbourhood of the new vertex introduced at each incremental step. It runs in O ( n + m ′ ) time, where m ′ is the number of edges in the completed graph. This matches the complexity of the algorithm in (Lokshtanov et al., 2010) and positively answers one of their open questions. Our second algorithm improves the complexity of inclusion-minimal completion to O ( n + m log 2 n ) when the additional property above is not required. Moreover, we prove that many very sparse graphs, having only O ( n ) edges, require Ω ( n 2 ) edges in any of their cograph completions. For these graphs, which include many of those encountered in applications, the improvement we obtain on the complexity scales as O ( n ∕ log 2 n ) .

Abstract

This article sets out to throw light on the intellectual and scientific activities of a group of Spanish humanists associated with the diplomat, aristocrat, and writer Diego Hurtado de Mendoza in the course of his fifteen years in Venice, Trent, and Rome, focusing on two aspects that have been neglected to date. These are (a) the integration of practices connected with the study of nature (herborizing expeditions and the production of herbaria) with the work of collating, translating, and commenting on classical texts dealing with natural history and materia medica; and (b) the insertion of these scientific activities in Italy by the Spanish subjects of the Emperor Charles V within the broader context of a specific cultural policy. This policy would later be fleshed out in the scientific project of the Spanish Crown under Philip II, inseparable as it was from the monarch’s political and religious policy.

Abstract

Reflections from hypersurfaces act by symplectomorphisms on the space of oriented lines with respect to the canonical symplectic form. We consider an arbitrary $C^{\infty}$-smooth hypersurface $\gamma\subset\mathbb R^{n+1}$ that is either a global strictly convex closed hypersurface, or a germ of hypersurface. We deal with the pseudogroup generated by compositional ratios of reflections from $\gamma$ and of reflections from its small deformations. In the case, when $\gamma$ is a global convex hypersurface, we show that the latter pseudogroup is dense in the pseudogroup of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms between subdomains of the phase cylinder: the space of oriented lines intersecting $\gamma$ transversally. We prove an analogous local result in the case, when $\gamma$ is a germ. The derivatives of the above compositional differences in the deformation parameter are Hamiltonian vector fields calculated by Ron Perline. To prove the main results, we find the Lie algebra generated by them and prove its $C^{\infty}$-density in the Lie algebra of Hamiltonian vector fields. We also prove analogues of the above results for hypersurfaces in Riemannian manifolds., Comment: 45 pages. This is a generalization of the previous version to higher dimensions

Abstract

International audience; Intracranial EEG studies using stereotactic EEG (SEEG) have shown that during seizures, epileptic activity spreads across several anatomical regions from the seizure onset zone towards remote brain areas. A full and objective characterisation of this patient-specific time-varying network is crucial for optimal surgical treatment. Functional Connectivity (FC) analysis of SEEG signals recorded during seizures enables to describe the statistical relations between all pairs of recorded signals. However, extracting meaningful information from those large datasets is time-consuming and requires high expertise. In the present study, we first propose a novel method named Brain-wide Time-varying Network Decomposition (BTND) to characterise the dynamic epileptogenic networks activated during seizures in individual patients recorded with SEEG electrodes. The method provides a number of pathological FC subgraphs with their temporal course of activation. The method can be applied to several seizures of the patient to extract reproducible subgraphs. Secondly, we compare the activated subgraphs obtained by the BTND method with visual interpretation of SEEG signals recorded in 27 seizures from 9 different patients. As a whole, we found that activated subgraphs corresponded to brain regions involved during the course of the seizures and their time course were highly consistent with classical visual interpretation. We believe that the proposed method can complement the visual analysis of SEEG signals recorded during seizures by highlighting and characterising the most significant parts of epileptic networks with their activation dynamics.

Abstract

[Departement_IRSTEA]Eaux [TR1_IRSTEA]RIVAGE [ADD1_IRSTEA]Hydrosystèmes et risques naturels; International audience; The ability of viscoplastic fluids to self-select their flow geometry through the formation of unyielded dead zones has important consequences for flows in wavy channels, flows over obstacles, etc. Yet, the mechanisms controlling the formation and dimensions of the dead zones remain poorly understood. We present a detailed cross-comparison of experimental and numerical results concerning channel flows of a viscoplastic fluid over a rectangular cavity filled by the same material. In all the configurations studied, which correspond to moderate values of the Bingham number, a continuous dead zone forms inside the cavity. Both numerical and experimental data reveal that, unlike at high Bingham numbers, the shear-rate profiles above the dead zone display an asymmetric shape. Accordingly, two different flow zones can be distinguished: a Poiseuille-like zone, in which the velocity profile is similar to that over a rigid wall, and a boundary layer ensuring the transition with the dead zone below. It is shown that the effective boundary condition felt by the Poiseuille-like layer is essentially controlled by incoming flow characteristics, such that the thickness of this layer does not obey simple relations with cavity length. Interestingly, however, the thickness of the boundary layer appears to follow a generalized Oldroyd’s scaling with cavity length.

Abstract

In Drosophila melanogaster the single male chromosome X undergoes an average twofold transcriptional upregulation for balancing the transcriptional output between sexes. Previous literature hypothesised that a global change in chromosome structure may accompany this process. However, recent studies based on Hi-C failed to detect these differences. Here we show that global conformational differences are specifically present in the male chromosome X and detectable using Hi-C data on sex-sorted embryos, as well as male and female cell lines, by leveraging custom data analysis solutions. We find the male chromosome X has more mid-/long-range interactions. We also identify differences at structural domain boundaries containing BEAF-32 in conjunction with CP190 or Chromator. Weakening of these domain boundaries in male chromosome X co-localizes with the binding of the dosage compensation complex and its co-factor CLAMP, reported to enhance chromatin accessibility. Together, our data strongly indicate that chromosome X dosage compensation affects global chromosome structure., In Drosophila, dosage compensation involves a twofold transcriptional upregulation of the single male chromosome X. Here the authors show that global conformational differences are specifically present in the male X chromosome and detectable using Hi-C data, indicating that dosage compensation affects global chromosome structure.

Abstract

International audience; We study the problem of parametric modeling of network-structured signals with graph filters. To benefit from the properties of several graph shift operators simultaneously, and to enhance interpretability, we investigate combinations of parallel graph filters with different shift operators. Due to their extra degrees of freedom, these models might suffer from over-fitting. We address this problem through a weighted ℓ 2 -norm regularization formulation to perform model selection by encouraging group sparsity. What makes this formulation interesting is that it is actually a smooth convex optimization problem. Experiments on real-world data structured by undirected and directed graphs show the effectiveness of this method.

Abstract

International audience; Direct stochastic optical reconstruction microscopy (dSTORM), developed in the last decade, has revolutionised optical microscopy by enabling scientists to visualise objects beyond the resolution provided by conventional microscopy (200 nm). We developed an innovative method based on blinking particle standards and conditions for long-lived imaging over several weeks. Stable localisation precisions within the 10 nm-range were achieved for single virions and in cellulo 2D imaging of centrosomes, as well as their reliable reconstruction in 3D dSTORM.

Abstract

A bridge to assemble: Cyclodextrins bridged with an ammonium linker bearing a hydrophobic substituent can efficiently form supramolecular polymers and avoid the competing self-inclusion and head-to-head processes. Furthermore, the self-assembling cyclodextrin derivative interacts in a highly cooperative manner with DNA, as demonstrated by compaction experiments. It also interacts cooperatively with siRNA and allows its transfection.

Abstract

Replicative senescence, induced by telomere shortening, exhibits considerable asynchrony and heterogeneity, the origins of which remain unclear. Here, we formally study how telomere shortening mechanisms impact on senescence kinetics and define two regimes of senescence, depending on the initial telomere length variance. We provide analytical solutions to the model, highlighting a non-linear relationship between senescence onset and initial telomere length distribution. This study reveals the complexity of the collective behavior of telomeres as they shorten, leading to senescence heterogeneity., Highlights • New stochastic model of telomere shortening and elongation by telomerase. • Analysis of the distribution of telomere length in the presence of telomerase. • Senescence onset expressed as a function of the initial telomere length distribution. • The initial telomere length distribution variance defines two senescence regimes.

Abstract

Chromatin remodelers are complexes able to both alter histone-DNA interactions and to mobilize nucleosomes. The mechanism of their action and the conformation of remodeled nucleosomes remain a matter of debates. In this work we compared the type and structure of the products of nucleosome remodeling by SWI/SNF and ACF complexes using high-resolution microscopy combined with novel biochemical approaches. We find that SWI/SNF generates a multitude of nucleosome-like metastable particles termed “remosomes”. Restriction enzyme accessibility assay, DNase I footprinting and AFM experiments reveal perturbed histone-DNA interactions within these particles. Electron cryo-microscopy shows that remosomes adopt a variety of different structures with variable irregular DNA path, similar to those described upon RSC remodeling. Remosome DNA accessibility to restriction enzymes is also markedly increased. We suggest that the generation of remosomes is a common feature of the SWI/SNF family remodelers. In contrast, the ACF remodeler, belonging to ISWI family, only produces repositioned nucleosomes and no evidence for particles associated with extra DNA, or perturbed DNA paths was found. The remosome generation by the SWI/SNF type of remodelers may represent a novel mechanism involved in processes where nucleosomal DNA accessibility is required, such as DNA repair or transcription regulation.
