Objective: this research aims to develop a product with high sensory and nutritional quality to make paraprobiotics developed in banana peel consumable within the scope of waste evaluation. Methods: Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus casei probiotics were developed here by using banana peels as a medium, and paraprobiotics were obtained from these strains by the pasteurization method at 80 °C for 30 minutes. Two types of bars, with and without paraprobiotics, were produced, and the nutritional and sensory quality characteristics of the bars were examined. Results: bars with and without paraprobiotics showed similar properties in terms of energy, protein, carbohydrate, saturated fat, Ca, Mg, Zn, Fe, Na, and total sugar values and sensory criteria, but showed significantly different levels in terms of total fat, potassium, total fiber, total phenolic substance and antiradical activity values. Conclusion: bars with and without paraprobiotics are in the category of “protein added, protein source, or protein-containing”, “high fiber”, “low sodium” products. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Between March 2022 and May 2022, this study was conducted to determine adult consumers' knowledge and consumption habits of probiotic and prebiotic products. Adults aged 18 to 65 were included in the cross-sectional study using an online questionnaire. Data were collected on participants' knowledge of the terms probiotics and prebiotics, patterns of consumption, frequency of consumption and variables affecting consumption, and diseases treated as a result of their usage. The study involved 447 volunteers, of whom 31.3% were men (n=140) and 68.7% were women (n=307). According to research data, 87.0% of consumers know about probiotics, and 62.2% know about prebiotics. There were statistically significant differences in knowledge of probiotics and prebiotics by sex (p<0.001 and p<0.001, respectively). When analyzed according to education level, probiotic knowledge improved as education level rose (p<0.001). Prebiotic knowledge and education level were statistically significant (p<0.05). Although probiotic and prebiotic knowledge is statistically significant according to education level, more research should be done on products, and individuals should be made aware of this issue. Aim: Our study aimed to determine the demographic factors affecting the hospital costs of patients with COPD exacerbation. Methods: The study was retrospectively conducted on patients, who presented to the Department of Emergency Medicine of Abant Izzet Baysal University with the complaints of COPD exacerbation between 01.06.2016 - 30.06.2017. The correlation between age, gender, occupations, places of residence, levels of education, history of smoking, methods of heating, comorbidities, times of application, symptoms, vital findings and findings of physical examination, blood gas results, frequency of admission to emergency department, frequency of hospitalization, emergency department outcomes of all patients and the cost was analyzed. Results: The median age of the patients was 73 years, and 76.8% of them were male. The median cost of the patients was TRY 136.8. There was no correlation between the cost and gender, employment status, place of residence, level of education, duration of smoking, type of medicines used at home, and method of heating (p>0.05). The costs of the patients who were admitted in the spring months were significantly lower compared to those who were admitted in other seasons (p>0.05). It was found that the cost was not increased by the presence of comorbidities, HT, CHF, and DM (p>0.05). It was found that the cost increased significantly as the general condition worsened (p>0.05). It was determined that the cost was positively correlated with respiratory rate and negatively correlated with DKS (p>0.05). The cost was found to be significantly higher in patients with extrapulmonary examination findings (p>0.05). HCO3 and cost were found to be negatively correlated (p0.05). The costs of the patients, who were admitted to intensive care or ward, were significantly higher (p>0.05). Conclusion: The cost is affected by a number of factors in patients admitted due to COPD exacerbation, the most important factor affecting the cost is patient’s clinic. Poor patient clinic determines both the treatment to be provided in the emergency department and the status of hospitalization., - Abstract
Under ongoing climate change and increasing anthropogenic activity, which continuously challenge ecosystem resilience, an in-depth understanding of ecological processes is urgently needed. Lakes, as providers of numerous ecosystem services, face multiple stressors that threaten their functioning. Harmful cyanobacterial blooms are a persistent problem resulting from nutrient pollution and climate-change induced stressors, like poor transparency, increased water temperature and enhanced stratification. Consistency in data collection and analysis methods is necessary to achieve fully comparable datasets and for statistical validity, avoiding issues linked to disparate data sources. The European Multi Lake Survey (EMLS) in summer 2015 was an initiative among scientists from 27 countries to collect and analyse lake physical, chemical and biological variables in a fully standardized manner. This database includes in-situ lake variables along with nutrient, pigment and cyanotoxin data of 369 lakes in Europe, which were centrally analysed in dedicated laboratories. Publishing the EMLS methods and dataset might inspire similar initiatives to study across large geographic areas that will contribute to better understanding lake responses in a changing environment.

The Caygoren Reservoir was sampled monthly from February 2007 to January 2009 at three stations to determine the relationships between the chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) dynamics and soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N), ammonium-nitrogen (NH4-N), water discharge, water transparency, water temperature (T), specific conductance (SC) and pH. Thermal stratification occurred in the reservoir from May to September. The maximum chlorophyll-a concentrations were measured (using a YSI multi probe) in the fall and the minimum concentrations were recorded in the winter. Differences in the concentrations of chl-a, SRP and NO3-N were significant among seasons (p0.01). The differences in the Secchi disk transparency were significant both among sampling stations and seasons (p, Balikesir University

Objective: To determine the maternal deaths and the factors affecting them in our city. Methods: The maternal deaths occurred in our city between January 2015 and June 2020 were reviewed retrospectively. The review was conducted by checking “Maternal Death Registry Forms” of the Provincial Directorate of Health. In cases where additional data related with the cause of death were required, the relatives of the cases, associated family practitioner, The Council of Forensic Medicine or local authorities were contacted. The data of the cases including age, gravida, parity, abortion, delivery type, week of gestation during delivery, period of death and maternal deaths due to direct, indirect and incidental causes were recorded. Based on total live births and maternal deaths within 6.5 years, maternal mortality rate was found as the maternal death number per 100,000 live births. Descriptive statistics were used for the statistical analysis of the data. Results: A total of 46.618 live births occurred between 2015 and 2020 in Elazığ. The number of maternal deaths due to direct and indirect causes is 7, and maternal mortality rate was found 15.01/100,000. Hypertensive diseases during pregnancy (n=3, 42.8%), pulmonary embolism (n=1, 14.3%) and cerebral thrombosis (n=1, 14.3%) were among the natural causes of maternal deaths. Indirect cause for maternal death was cardiac diseases (n=2, 28.6%). When they were categorized according to the Three Delays Model, there were 3 death cases in the first delay model and 2 death cases in the third delay model, but there was no maternal death in the second delay model. Conclusion: Maternal death is an significant public health issue which develops due to the generally preventable causes and maintains its importance. The factors contributing to death should be paid attention in order to decrease maternal death rates.

Objective: Twin pregnancies constitute 1–2% of all pregnancies. With the recent developments in assisted reproductive technologies, the incidence of multiple pregnancy has increased. Preterm labor is held responsible for the poor neonatal outcomes primarily. In our study, we aimed to assess fetal-maternal outcomes of twin pregnancies seen in our clinic. Methods: One hundred and thirty twin pregnancy cases out of 4241 pregnant women who delivered in our clinic between 01.01.2017 and 01.01.2020 were included in the study. The labor records of the patients were reviewed retrospectively and their data for age, week of gestation, delivery type, birth weight, fetal sex, chorionicity characteristics and laboratory parameters were recorded. Definitive statistics and SPSS 21.0 for statistical analyses were used to evaluate the data obtained from the study. The data were presented as mean ± SD (standard deviation). Results: The incidence of twin pregnancy was found 3%. In the ultrasonographic imaging evaluated during diagnosis, 27.7% of the cases were monochorionic and 72% of them were dichorionic. Of the pregnant women, 12.3% were at term and 87.7% were at preterm period. When the preterm fetuses were evaluated, 37.7% of 114 preterm fetuses were delivered at late preterm period, 29.2% of them at mid-preterm period and 20.8% at premature preterm period. The rates of treatment pregnancy (pregnancy provided by ovulation induction and assisted reproductive technologies) and spontaneous twin pregnancy were 20% and 80%, respectively. Mean maternal age was found 31.3. When evaluated in terms of maternal morbidity, preterm labor and premature rupture of membrane were the most common problems. Mean newborn weight was 1832g and 59.3% of the newborns had low birth weight and 21.8% of them had very low birth weight. While one fetus had transverse presentation in 12.5% of the patients, at least one fetus had breech presentation in 53.1% of the cases and 34.4% of the cases had head-head presentation. Conclusion: Twin pregnancies are characterized by the increased feto-maternal risks. Therefore, both antenatal and intrapartum management should be maintained diligently.

Objective To investigate the incidence and concomitant findings of persistent right umbilical vein (PRUV). Methods The study was conducted by retrospective review of the data of 1856 patients who admitted to the Clinic of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Fırat University between December 2018 and December 2019 for the gestational examination between 14 and 28 weeks of gestation. The obstetric characteristics of the patients such as age, number of pregnancy, abortion, parity and body mass index were recorded. The diagnosis of PRUV was established in the conditions where portal vein reaches to stomach abnormally (roughly, course towards stomach instead of parallel course), fetal gall bladder locates in the medial of umbilical vein or umbilical vein connects to right portal vein abnormally instead of left portal vein. In the cases diagnosed with PRUV, the isolated persistent right umbilical vein or its association with other anomalies was recorded. Ultrasonography findings (minor markers) were also recorded in these cases. Results During the study period, 1856 pregnant women were evaluated for gestational examination. Five cases were established with the diagnosis of PRUV. Accordingly, PRUV prevalence was 0.27%. The PRUV incidence in the study population was 1/370 in the study population. No chromosomal anomaly was found in PRUV cases, but one case had echogenic intracardiac focus, one case had echogenic intestine, and one case had short nasal bone. When organ systems were evaluated, renal cyst was found in one case. No additional finding was found in one case. Conclusion PRUV is the most common form among fetal venous system anomalies. If detected, fetal examination is required in terms of the anomalies that may accompany. Chromosome analysis is not necessary if it is isolated, and it should be evaluated as a variant of normal anatomy.

CHLOROPHENOXYACETIC acid ,AQUEOUS solutions ,AGRICULTURAL wastes ,THIN layer chromatography ,LANGMUIR isotherms - Abstract
The potential biosorption abilities of apple shell (AS), orange peel (OP), banana peel (BP), and millet waste (MW) as a bio-waste material to remove 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid (2,4-D), 2,4-dichlorophenoxy propanoic acid (2,4-DP), and 2,4-dichlorophenoxy butyric acid (2,4-DB) from aqueous solution were investigated in batch condition. Optimum biosorption conditions were determined as a function of contact time, pH of the solution, amount of biomass, and initial pesticide concentrations. The concentrations of the pesticides in the remaining solutions were simultaneously determined by high performance thin layer chromatography. Langmuir and Freundlich models were applied to describe the biosorption isotherm of the pesticides by agricultural wastes. The experimental adsorption data were fitted to Langmuir adsorption models (r2 > 0.99). It was found that adsorption of 2,4-DP was higher for all biosorbent. The highest maximum adsorption capacities of 2,4-DP were found as 40.08, 22.71, 33.26, and 45.45 mg/g, respectively, for AS, OP, BP, and MW. Maximum adsorption capacity was obtained for 2,4-D as OP > MW > BP > AS, 2,4-DP as MW > AS > BP > OP, and 2,4-DB as OP > AS > BP > MW. From the results, it can be said that MW was an effective biosorbent for removal of 2,4-DP and OP was an effective biosorbent for removal of 2,4-D and 2,4-DB through the studied pesticides. Optimum biosorption conditions were determined as 60 min of contact time, 100 mg of biomass, AS at pH 6.0, OP at pH 6.0, MW at pH 7.0, and BP at pH 7.0. FT-IR was employed to understand the surface properties of biosorbents. According to the results, agricultural wastes have high adsorption capacity. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The competence around the elevator marjet place has resulted in diminish of the concept of energy efficiency only to energy consumption on running. As a result, conventional hydraulic elevators are ranked in the lowest category. In fact, the energy efficiency includes energy equivalence of service and maintenance costs beside energy consumption on running and idle conditions for the elevators. The design of the hydraulic elevators is an important factor affecting energy consumption. Keeping the oil temperature under control is one of the essential factors which improves energy saving, running performance and service life. Counter-weighing on hydraulic elevator systems haven't used widely so far, but its usage increases by changing face of market strategies in order to decrease energy consumption. Thermal-equilibrium temperature and energy consumption can be significantly reduced by means of counter-weighing especially for intensively used elevators. In this paper, the effects of the designs considering thermal equilibrium temperature and counter-weighting on energy efficiency are investigated for the elevators. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Evrim Gul,1 Ebru Celik Kavak2 1Department of Emergency Medicine, Elazig Education and Research Hospital, Elazig, Turkey; 2Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, School of Medicine, Firat University, Elazig, Turkey Purpose: Primary dysmenorrhea (PD) is a common cause of pelvic pain that can cause limitations in daily activities. Treatment options sometimes result in failure, suggesting that different mechanisms may be effective in etiopathogenesis. Eosinophils are cells that are present in endometrium only in the perimenstrual period. The aim of this study was to evaluate the levels of eotaxin, a potent eosinophilic chemoattractant, in patients with PD.Patients and methods: Thirty patients with PD and thirty healthy women were included in the study. Venous blood sample of 10 mL was collected from each participant. Blood samples were taken in the first 2 days of the menstrual cycle at any period of the day. Serum eotaxin levels were determined by enzyme-linked immunofluorescence assay. Results: There were no statistically significant differences between the demographic properties of groups in terms of age and body mass index. Eotaxin levels were significantly different in patients with PD than the control subjects (p=0.012).Conclusion: Detection of different levels of eotaxin in patients with PD may be a new and important step in determining the factors contributing to the pathogenesis of dysmenorrhea. The objective of this study was to compare serum endocan levels in patients with restless legs syndrome (RLS) and control subjects in order to elucidate whether RLS is associated with endothelial dysfunction. Methods: A total of 31 drug naïve female patients with RLS and 31 age- and BMI-matched women were included in the study. Patients with pathological or physiological conditions or with a history of medication use that could potentially influence endothelial functions were excluded, as well as those with alcohol or drug abuse history. The two groups were compared with routine blood tests and serum endocan levels. Results: Patients with RLS had lower serum endocan levels than the controls (P=0.037). There was a negative bivariate correlation between RLS severity score and serum endocan levels (r=-0.406, P=0.023). While white blood cell count was significantly higher in RLS group, 25-hydroxy vitamin D3, vitamin B12, transferrin saturation rate, and HDL-cholesterol were significantly lower. Creatininemia and diastolic blood pressure were also marginally insignificantly lower in RLS group. Due to the presence of differences between two groups in these variables, a linear regression analysis was performed that showed a positive association between endocan and creatininemia (β=0.310, P=0.022), and a negative association between endocan and RLS (β=-0.502, P

- Abstract
The feeding habits of perch (Perca fluviatilis) were documented by analyzing gut contents of more than 3300 specimens collected seasonally at nine stations located along the impounded large river in Turkey. Perch largely preferred fish (36%), insects (54%), other crustaceans (16%) and daphnia (13%). Spatial analysis showed that perch substantially preferred fish in the river section above the dam lakes and insects, crustacean and fish in the river section below the dam lake and in dam lakes. The perch at every size seemed to prefer fish with the highest and lowest percentage obtained for 0 to 80 and 141 to 200 mm. Insects and crustaceans were important for 81 to 140 mm and 0 to 120 mm length, respectively. Crustaceans were important in June, November and July. Insects and fish except for June 2009 constituted an important portion of the diets during every sampling month. The perch showed a piscivory feeding habit, a result obtained by trophic level calculated by stomach contents (3.87) and stable isotope (3.91) methods. Trophic level change little during the ontogeny with relatively higher value obtained for the larger length. The perch inhabiting in the river section above the dam lakes had the highest trophic level compared to the other sites. Diet breadth of perch was lower and higher for larger and middle length (101 to 140 mm), respectively. The diet breadth was higher in dam lakes, indicating opportunistic feeding habits in lakes. Being the most abundant fish species in the study system and showing predatory feeding habits suggested that perch may have an effect on local fish assemblage and itself through predation.

Bu karşılaştırma sonucunda kullanılan yöntemin geçerliliği değerlendirilmiştir. vııı SUMMARY COMPUTER AIDED ANALYSES OF AXISYMMETRIC FORGING BASED ON STREAMLINED UPPER-BOUND METHOD Metal forming processes are one of widely used manufacturing methods. Analyzing and completely comprehending of metal forming processes, helps to increase productivity of these processes. In this thesis, a new analytical method based on upper-bound theory was applied to axisymmetric parts. Forged cylindirical part was defined with Bezier curves considering the volume constancy condition. The curves then treated as stream-lines and used for the analysis. Kinematically admissible velocity field was obtained from these stream-lines. Required forging power is calculated from the upper-bound solution using the kinematically admissible velocity field. The obtained forging power was then optimized and some parameters defining the form of the forged cylindirical part were calculated. The results obtained from computer software based on the aforementioned method, compared with some experimental results. The validity of the applied method was assessed from the result of these comparisons. DC 91

Background: This study aimed to examine early clinical and laboratory findings in infants born to mothers who had organ transplants and received immunosuppressive treatment., Methods: Between 2016 and 2023, the study examined infants of mothers who underwent organ transplantation and were receiving immunosuppressive treatment, and followed at the Department of Neonatology at Akdeniz University. Demographic, clinical, and laboratory characteristics of mothers and infants were recorded. On the first day of life, complete blood count values were examined, as well as potassium levels on the first, third, and seventh days, and creatinine levels on the third and seventh days. The tacrolimus blood level was calculated by taking the average of the tacrolimus blood values of the mother measured during the pregnancy. The infants were evaluated for any potential morbidities caused by intrauterine immunosuppressive drug exposure., Results: The study included 21 mothers (some with multiple pregnancies) and 27 infants. According to the findings of this study, 74% of these infants were born premature, 67% had low birth weight, and all were delivered via cesarean section. Prematurity was associated with the morbidities found in the infants. In the early period, lymphopenia was detected in 37%, neutropenia in 25.9%, thrombocytopenia in 11.1%, hyperkalemia in 18.5%, and creatinine elevation in 7.4%, all of which returned to normal within a few days. There was no significant relationship between maternal tacrolimus blood levels and infant potassium and creatinine levels., Conclusion: Apart from an increased risk of prematurity, low birth weight, and cesarean delivery, no effects were observed in these infants during the early period. However, long-term follow-up is necessary to monitor for any potential morbidities.

Background: Hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is a significant cause of mortality and short- and long-term morbidities. Therapeutic hypothermia (TH) has been shown to be the standard care for HIE of infants ≥36 weeks gestational age (GA), as it has been demonstrated to reduce the rates of mortality, and adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes. This study aims to determine the incidence of HIE in our country, to assess the TH management in infants with HIE, and present short-term outcomes of these infants., Methods: The Turkish Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy Online Registry database was established for this multicenter, prospective, observational, nationally-based cohort study to evaluate the data of infants born at ≥34 weeks GA who displayed evidence of neonatal encephalopathy (NE) between March, 2020 and April 2022., Results: The incidence of HIE among infants born at ≥36 weeks GA (n = 965) was 2.13 per 1000 live births (517:242440), and accounting for 1.55% (965:62062) of all neonatal intensive care unit admissions. The rates of mild, moderate and severe HİE were 25.5% (n = 246), 58.9% (n = 568), and 15.6% (n = 151), respectively. Infants with severe HIE had higher rates of abnormal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings, and mortality (p<0.001). No significant difference in mortality and abnormal MRI results was found according to the time of TH initiation (<3 h, 3-6 h and >6 h) (p>0.05). TH was administered to 85 (34.5%) infants with mild HIE, and of those born of 34-35 weeks of GA, 67.4% (n = 31) received TH. A total of 58 (6%) deaths were reported with a higher mortality rate in infants born at 34-35 weeks of GA (OR 3.941, 95% Cl 1.446-10.7422, p = 0.007)., Conclusion: The incidence of HIE remained similar over time with a reduction in mortality rate. The timing of TH initiation, whether <3 or 3-6 h, did not result in lower occurrences of brain lesions on MRI or mortality. An increasing number of infants with mild HIE and late preterm infants with HIE are receiving TH; however, the indications for TH require further clarification. Longer follow-up studies are necessary for this vulnerable population., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist., (Copyright: © 2023 Okulu et al. Background/aims: Mediterranean diet, owing to its infla mmati on-mo dulat ory effects, is considered a beneficial dietary regimen for patients with inflammatory bowel disease. Despite promising results in the literature, studies on this subject are still limited. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate adherence to the Mediterranean diet in patients with inflammatory bowel disease and examine its impact on disease activity and quality of life., Materials and Methods: A total of 83 patients were included in the study. Mediterranean Diet Adherence Scale was used to evaluate adherence to the Mediterranean diet. Crohn's Disease Activity Index was used to evaluate disease activity in Crohn's disease. Disease activity was determined by using the Mayo Clinic score for ulcerative colitis. Quality of Life Scale Short Form-36 was used to evaluate the quality of life of patients., Results: When the median Mediterranean Diet Adherence Scale score was 7 (1-12), only 18 patients (21.7%) showed strong adherence to the Mediterranean diet. Disease activity scores of patients with ulcerative colitis having low adherence to the Mediterranean diet were found to be higher (P < .05). In addition, some quality of life parameters were relatively higher in patients with ulcerative colitis who showed strong adherence to the Mediterranean diet (P < .05). For Crohn's disease, no significant difference was found in disease activity and quality of life with respect to adherence to the Mediterranean diet (P > .05)., Conclusions: Stronger adherence to the Mediterranean diet in patients with ulcerative colitis can help improve quality of life and modulate disease activity. However, further prospective studies are needed to investigate the potential use of the Mediterranean diet in inflammatory bowel disease management.

- Abstract
Objective: Optimal care in the delivery room is important to decrease neonatal morbidity and mortality. We aimed to evaluate neonatal resuscitation practices in Turkish centers., Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional survey consisted of a 91-item questionnaire focused on delivery room practices in neonatal resuscitation and was sent to 50 Turkish centers. Hospitals with <2500 and those with ≥2500 births/year were compared., Results: In 2018, approximately 240 000 births occurred at participating hospitals with a median of 2630 births/year. Participating hospitals were able to provide nasal continuous-positiveairway-pressure/high-flow nasal cannula, mechanical ventilation, high-frequency oscillatory ventilation, inhaled nitric oxide, and therapeutic hypothermia similarly. Antenatal counseling was routinely performed on parents at 56% of all centers. A resuscitation team was present at 72% of deliveries. Umbilical cord management for both term and preterm infants was similar between centers. The rate of delayed cord clamping was approximately 60% in term and late preterm infants. Thermal management for preterm infants (<32 weeks) was similar. Hospitals had appropriate equipment with similar rates of interventions and management, except conti nuous-positive-airway-pressure and positive-end-expiratory-pressure levels (cmH2O) used in preterm infants (P = .021, and P = .032). Ethical and educational aspects were also similar., Conclusions: This survey provided information on neonatal resuscitation practices in a sample of hospitals from all regions of Turkey and allowed us to see weaknesses in some fields. Although adherence to the guidelines was high among centers, further implementations are required in the areas of antenatal counseling, cord management, and circulation assessment in the delivery room.

- Abstract
A new electrochromic copolymer based on 4,7-di(thiophen-2-yl)benzo[c] [1,2,5]thiadiazole and 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene was successfully obtained via the electrochemical polymerization method in the medium of electrolyte solution, which consists of 0.1 M tetrabutylammonium hexafluorophosphate and dichloromethane. In order to compare the electrochemical and chemical properties of the copolymer, the benzothiodiazole derivative and 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) monomers, which are parts of the copolymer, are electrochemically polymerized, separately in the same environment and concentration with the copolymer. Poly(4,7-di(thiophen-2-yl)benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole) (P(TBT)) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) polymers were obtained. Before starting the electrochemical synthesis, the initial oxidation potentials of the monomers that form the copolymer were compared via the cyclic voltammeter method in this solvent electrolyte medium. Then, electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical characterizations of electrochemically synthesized polymers and copolymers were performed. New copolymer shows metallic blue and centaury blue in its neutral and oxidized states, respectively with a low band gap of 1.32 eV. Moreover, the copolymer has a 59% optical contrast and high coloration efficiency (324 cm

- Abstract
Background: Specific granule deficiency (SGD) is a rare immunodeficiency associated with CCAT/enhancer-binding protein epsilon (CEBPE) gene variants. It can cause severe recurrent infections and is lethal without successful stem cell transplantation. Few cases with SGD of both type 1 and type 2 have been described in the literature. In this study, we present the first report of a case with a novel homozygous c.511 C > T (p.Gln171Ter) mutation in the SMARCD2 gene of SGD type 2, which was successfully treated with bone marrow transplantation. Case: A male infant presented to our neonatal intensive care unit on the second day of life with an icteric appearance and mild hypotonia. He was evaluated for immunodeficiency as the cause of delayed cord separation and refractory neutropenia. At 6 weeks of age, SGD type 2 with a new variant was diagnosed and successfully treated by bone marrow transplantation. Conclusion: SGD is an immunodeficiency disease that is quite rare. However, we believe that SGD diagnosis and associated new variants can be detected more frequently with the widespread use of all whole-exome sequencing techniques.

- Abstract
Objectives: The present study aimed to investigate the effects of acute hypoxia exposure following prenatal stress on the novelty-seeking behavior and hippocampus of adolescent rats., Methods: The offspring were divided into prenatal stress (PS) and non-stress (NS) groups. Both groups were exposed to hypoxia on postnatal day 10 (P10) while control groups were undisturbed. Novel object recognition task was performed in each group. Next, brains were collected to examine hippocampus via immunohistochemical and biochemical studies on postnatal day 35 (P35)., Results: PS decreased novelty discrimination and synaptophysin (SYN) expressions in both CA1 and CA3 of the hypoxia group prominently (p < 0.05). Nestin-expressing cells were reduced while vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression was enhanced in the subgranular zone (SGZ) of PS-hypoxia group (p < 0.05). VEGF enhancement triggered angiogenesis in the CA1 and CA3 significantly (p < 0.05). PS also increased thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) levels in the hypoxia group as a result of oxidative stress (p < 0.05)., Conclusion: These findings demonstrated that PS exacerbates neurodevelopmental deficits in the hippocampus of acute hypoxia-induced offspring in adolescence., (© 2021 International Society for Developmental Neuroscience.)

- Abstract
Objective: Late neonatal hypocalcemia (LNH) is a common metabolic problem associated with hypoparathyroidism, high phosphate intake and vitamin D deficiency, often presenting with seizures. In this cross-sectional study, we aimed to evaluate the role of vitamin D deficiency in LNH in Turkey and to describe the characteristics of affected newborns., Methods: Conducted with a cross-sectional design and with the participation of 61 neonatal centers from December 2015 to December 2016, the study included term neonates with LNH (n=96) and their mothers (n=93). Data were registered on the FAVOR Web Registry System. Serum samples of newborns and mothers were analyzed for calcium, phosphate, magnesium, albumin, alkaline phosphatase, intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) and 25 hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] levels., Results: The median (range) onset time of hypocalcemia was 5.0 (4.0-8.0) days of age, with a male preponderance (60.4%). The median (range) serum 25(OH)D levels of the neonates and their mothers were 6.3 (4.1-9.05) and 5.2 (4.7-8.8) ng/mL, respectively. The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency (<12 ng/mL) was high in both the neonates (86.5%) and mothers (93%). Serum 25(OH)D levels of the infants and mothers showed a strong correlation (p<0.001). While the majority (93.7%) of the neonates had normal/high phosphorus levels, iPTH levels were low or inappropriately normal in 54.2% of the patients., Conclusion: Vitamin D deficiency prevalence was found to be high in LNH. Efforts to provide vitamin D supplementation during pregnancy should be encouraged. Evaluation of vitamin D status should be included in the workup of LNH.
