This energy conservation workbook series was developed to provide specific data on the effect of various design and operating decisions on both cost and energy consumption. It is designed to make clear the energy consumption and cost implications of various building design and operating decisions in terms that both the layman and design professional can understand. The workbook will be released in three sections -- Energy Conservation and the Building Shell, Mechanical Systems, and Problems of School Lighting and Energy Conservation. The intent of the series is to provide a simple means for determining the consequences of the various possible decision options open to designers and school officials. This section, the first of the series, examines what can be done in designing or redesigning the building's shell to make the wisest long-run use of resources. The text explains how the building shell affects the building's energy consumption, identifies energy conserving ideas for use in the design (or redesign) of the shell, gives examples showing how these ideas could be applied to new construction and modernization projects, provides a simple method for determining the effects of each of these ideas, and identifies sources of further information to assist design professionals in complete analysis of the effect of the building shell on energy consumption. This book is the first in a series of Energy Tool Kits designed for women by Consumer Action Now, a non-profit organization devoted to promoting energy efficiency and renewable energy resources. Information is provided in 16 sections: introduction, home energy survey; caulking; weatherstripping (double-hung and sliding windows, and casement, tilting and other-hinged windows); storm windows; insulating window treatments (shades, shutters, curtains and drapes); sun shading options; door treatments (weatherstripping, insulation, forgotten doors such as attics, cellars, garages); insulation (unfinished attics, crawl space walls, garages, unfinished basements); more energy savers (thermostats, hot water heaters, heating/cooling systems, fireplaces and wood stoves, appliances and lighting, clothing and bedding); choosing a contractor; financing home energy improvements; tips on bringing energy consciousness to the community; career opportunities in energy; glossary of key terms; and a bibliography. The book is written in non-technical language and specific instructions, lists of materials, safety considerations, and conservation tips are provided for energy conservation projects. Diagrams of materials, tools, and use of tools, are also provided to make the projects easier to understand and complete. Recent research indicates there are a great many nonvisual effects of light on people. The control of rickets and the suntan effect are well understood. Less well known effects include synchronization of a number of physiological rhythms and prevention and control of infantile jaundice. Physiological and psychological effects also vary with the type of artificial light, whether it is from incandescent or cool-white or full-spectrum (daylight) fluorescent lamps. Student behavior appears to be favorably affected by full-spectrum lamps. Color also has an effect on people and their behavior. Research suggests that blues and greens tend to foster relaxation while shades of red or orange tend to induce activity. In discussions of windows versus windowless space, building occupants seem to favor the ability to view the outside world. If the effects reported in the studies that have been undertaken to date can be replicated, educators and school facility designers should be able to design classrooms capable of producing desirable and predictable student behaviors. The American Institute of Architects National Committee on Architecture for Education presents this guide which addresses methods of energy conservation in school buildings with simple design, construction, and equipment-control technology so that trained and creative people can take over functions normally done by machinery and automated controls. A general discussion first covers energy consumption problem areas in educational facilities, followed by interior space utilization needs and use of manual climate control. Various ways of reducing energy load are examined, including building and classroom orientation to the sun and in differing climates, shielding barriers for the sun and wind, proper insulation and ventilation in roofs as well as interior spaces, and the type of heating system used. Other energy efficiency considerations involving food processing, boiler systems, and building operations involving load distribution and off-peak loading conclude the report. (GR)

This Home Economics Educations Package (HEEP) is written to be used as a consumer education course on the selection of window treatments. The objective of the course is for each student to know the types of window treatments available and to be able to select window treatments to meet present or future needs. This guide has been divided into four sections: a teachers section--which states the idea, skill or attitude, and objectives to be learned; instructions to the teacher--which is a list of a variety of resource materials; instructions for evaluation--a pretest and posttest with answer keys; and the student section--which contains a pretest, a list of learning objectives, three lessons (with accompanying objectives, instructions, learning activities, and self-tests); followup instructions and a student evaluation form. One of a series of documents on design of disaster-resistant buildings, this publication treats construction of rural primary schools to resist destruction by wind and water from cyclones. Also appropriate for other buildings, material is aimed at rural primary schools because they are less likely to be professionally designed or supervised; the premise is that the schools should be safe not only for the children, but also as a place of community refuge. The guide contains more than 40 design drawings and 14 photographs taken in Bangladesh after the 1970 cyclone. Following an introduction and brief discussion of building styles, the guide is organized into six major sections: (1) nature of wind and water threats--wind and tropical storms, how environment affects wind, wind loads; (2) selection and use of site--vegetation, windbreaks, seasons, flooding, storm surge; (3) roofs--slopes, shape, flat roofs, overhangs and canopies, timber framing, cyclone-resisting connections, roof sheeting, purlins and trusses, roof to wall; (4) walls and foundations--framed walls, masonry walls, wall openings, wooden shutters, fixing of frames, foundations; (5) deterioration of materials and fixings--timbers, concrete, metal, detachable elements; (6) emergency measures to protect buildings from strong wind and water. The information in this report on school vandalism was gathered via questionnaires from 47 school boards across Canada. It provides suggestions to help school boards reduce the damage costs from vandalism. Topics covered include window breakage costs versus other vandalism costs; the trend, upward or downward; the time of year vandalism occurs; size and type of school and socioeconomic area involved; the people who vandalize; and preventive measures and their cost. The report concludes that school boards are accepting the inevitability of a certain amount of destruction of school property and are instituting means to minimize it and catch and prosecute those responsible. The appendices provide such things as one school's logbook of vandalism, a copy of a form letter to parents, damages/loss reports, and methods to combat vandalism. (Author/LD)

The goal of the Schoolhouse Energy Efficiency Demonstration (SEED) was to assist schools in reducing the impact of the rising cost of energy by defining good energy management programs and by implementing quick-fix, low-cost energy efficiency improvements. Twenty schools in 15 states participated in the demonstration program. This report covers the first year of SEED and is presented in three chapters. The first chapter presents the major findings of the SEED program and gives a profile of each of the 20 selected schools. The second chapter contains an energy audit for students and teachers that can be used in the classroom, and a survey of some successful lesson plans on energy. The last chapter is a technical manual consisting of six major parts and a glossary. The first four parts recount the important experiences from the first year of the SEED program. They are designed as background and information for those engaged in energy conservation activities in schools. The fifth part, the Schoolhouse Energy Audit Checklist, is a guide to conducting an energy audit. It is followed by energy report forms and guides to be used by the auditor in obtaining energy audit information required by the Department of Energy (DOE). (Author/MLF)

This module, one of ten competency based modules developed for vocational home economics teachers, is based on a job cluster in window treatment services. It can be used for various types of learners such as the handicapped, slowlearners, high school students, and adults including senior citizens. Focusing on the specific job title of window treatment services aide/assistant or window covering specialist, six competencies are listed with corresponding student behavioral objectives, teaching strategies, and teaching resources (books, businesses, etc.). An assessment section contains pre- and posttests and a performance instrument with answer keys. Provided in the appendix are sixty-two learner information sheets (fact sheets, work sheets,) and eight teacher information sheets (answer sheets to student activity guide) referenced to specific teaching strategies. A separate resource section lists books, pamphlets, curriculum materials, films, and lists. Introductory material includes background on the development and field testing of the module, a rationale and job description for the occupational area, and directions for teacher use. This self-instructional module includes learner objectives, text, practice exercises and answer sheets addressing developments in research on learning environments and why instructional technologists should take the lead in applying the resulting knowledge to the design of training areas. Favorable learning environments are described in general terms, and specific characteristics of well-designed training facilities are described in detail. Elements covered include classroom size and shape, window and wall structure, and furniture design. The use of color and its psychological effects are also examined. A 15-item test is included.
