Abstract

The information in this report on school vandalism was gathered via questionnaires from 47 school boards across Canada. It provides suggestions to help school boards reduce the damage costs from vandalism. Topics covered include window breakage costs versus other vandalism costs; the trend, upward or downward; the time of year vandalism occurs; size and type of school and socioeconomic area involved; the people who vandalize; and preventive measures and their cost. The report concludes that school boards are accepting the inevitability of a certain amount of destruction of school property and are instituting means to minimize it and catch and prosecute those responsible. The appendices provide such things as one school's logbook of vandalism, a copy of a form letter to parents, damages/loss reports, and methods to combat vandalism. (Author/LD)
