The current collector, one of the main components in the manufacture of composite electrodes, is mainly used to enhance the mechanical stability and improve the performance and cycle performance of the electrodes. During the electrochemical reaction, the lithium diffusion can induce compressive stress and affect the mechanical performance, lifespan, and performance of batteries. Therefore, this study analyzed the influence of copper foil on the mechanical response and degradation performance of electrodes. In addition, a mathematical model was developed to analyze the effect of copper foil on the stress–strain behavior of the electrodes. The results indicated that the stress and modulus of the graphite electrodes have a non-linear increase with the lithiation process. Based on those findings, utilizing a thinner and more compliant current collector could effectively mitigate the in-plane strain and the stress within electrodes. Thus, developing a thinner and softer copper foil could simultaneously enhance the mechanical properties and specific density of composite electrodes for the next-generation LiBs. Stimuli-responsive polymers have gained significant research interest in recent years owing to their potential applications in diverse areas. Here, we present a study on the actuation characteristics of chitosan-based free-standing films that exhibit full reversibility and repeatability in response to water vapor exposure. The effect of pH of the water and the degree of cross-linking of the chitosan films on the actuation performance is studied. In the case of free-standing polymer film-based actuators, the primary driving force behind actuation is understood to be the differential strain induced by the gradient in volume changes across the thickness of the film. To understand it further, we conducted full atomistic molecular dynamics simulation studies to explore water absorption and adsorption into the chitosan matrix. Our simulations revealed an accumulation of water molecules in the surface layer that rapidly desorb when shielded from water vapor. Furthermore, estimates of the energy gain resulting from the adsorption of water on the surface suggest that it is adequate to drive the shape change of the actuator when subjected to asymmetric exposure to water vapor. The inherent flexibility of two-dimensional (2D) materials allows for efficient manipulation of their physical properties through strain application, which is essential for the development of advanced nanoscale devices. This study aimed to understand the impact of mechanical strain on the magnetic properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials using Monte Carlo simulations. The effects of several strain states on the magnetic properties were investigated using the Lennard-Jones potential and bond length-dependent exchange interactions. The key parameters analyzed include the Lindemann coefficient, radial distribution function, and magnetization in relation to temperature and magnetic field. The results indicate that applying biaxial tensile strain generally reduces the critical temperature (Tc). In contrast, the biaxial compressive strain increased Tc within the elastic range, but decreased at higher strain levels. Both compressive and tensile strains significantly influence the ferromagnetic properties and structural ordering, as evidenced by magnetization hysteresis. Notably, pure shear strain did not induce disorder, leaving the magnetization unaffected. In addition, our findings suggest the potential of domain-formation mechanisms. This study provides comprehensive insights into the influence of mechanical strain on the magnetic behavior and structural integrity of 2D materials, offering valuable guidance for future research and advanced material design applications. Pre-orientation stretching of high-density polyethylene improves the charge stability of electrets produced in corona discharge. Electrets made of oriented polyethylene charged in the corona under uniaxial tensile mechanical stress have even greater stability. The increased stability of electrets is due to the capture of electrons in deep structural traps formed after the rupture of macromolecules during orientation and mechanical stress. By the method of thermally stimulated electron emission, it is shown that the charge of electrets is formed at the expense of electrons. The possibility observation of the electric field controlled multicaloric response through quasi-isostatic compression as a result of the converse piezoelectric effect was demonstrated on the cylindrical type magnetoelectric composite MnAs/PZT. It was shown that an electric voltage of 100 V corresponding to an electric field of E ∼0.3 kV/mm applied to the walls of the piezoelectric component PZT of the MnAs/PZT composite contributes to an increase in the maximum adiabatic temperature change by 0.2 K in the temperature range of the magnetostructural phase transition of MnAs ∼317 K at a magnetic field change of 1.8 T. Numerical analysis using the finite element method has shown that an electric field voltage of 100 V is capable of creating a quasi-isostatic mechanical stress in the region inside a cylindrical PZT tube of ∼3 MPa. Moreover, in the region of weak pressures up to 10 MPa, the contribution to the total adiabatic temperature change from piezo-mechanical compression linearly depends on the electrical voltage that can be used for control by magnetic and caloric properties of multicaloric materials. Lipid rafts are nanoscopic assemblies of sphingolipids, cholesterol, and specific membrane proteins. They are believed to underlie the experimentally observed lateral heterogeneity of eukaryotic plasma membranes and implicated in many cellular processes, such as signaling and trafficking. Ternary model membranes consisting of saturated lipids, unsaturated lipids, and cholesterol are common proxies because they exhibit phase coexistence between a liquid-ordered (lo) and liquid-disordered (ld) phase and an associated critical point. However, plasma membranes are also asymmetric in terms of lipid type, lipid abundance, leaflet tension, and corresponding cholesterol distribution, suggesting that rafts cannot be examined separately from questions about elasticity, curvature torques, and internal mechanical stresses. Unfortunately, it is challenging to capture this wide range of physical phenomenology in a single model that can access sufficiently long length- and time scales. Here we extend the highly coarse-grained Cooke model for lipids, which has been extensively characterized on the curvature-elastic front, to also represent raft-like lo/ld mixing thermodynamics. In particular, we capture the shape and tie lines of a coexistence region that narrows upon cholesterol addition, terminates at a critical point, and has coexisting phases that reflect key differences in membrane order and lipid packing. We furthermore examine elasticity and lipid diffusion for both phase separated and pure systems and how they change upon the addition of cholesterol. We anticipate that this model will enable significant insight into lo/ld phase separation and the associated question of lipid rafts for membranes that have compositionally distinct leaflets that are likely under differential stress—like the plasma membrane. Cu2AgBiI6 films were prepared by a one-step spin coating method, and flexible memristors with an Ag/PMMA/Cu2AgBiI6/ITO structure were constructed. The devices showed a bipolar resistive switching behavior with low switching voltage, which is beneficial for reducing energy consumption. Furthermore, this study found that the device exhibits an endurance of about 900 cycles, a higher ON/OFF ratio of over 103, a long retention time (∼104 s), and high stabilities against mechanical stress. Remarkably, the present flexible memristor displayed extraordinary flexibility and stability, with no significant change for the resistive switching behavior even at various bending angles or after undergoing 900 bending cycles. Flexible electronic devices with skin-like properties are hailed as revolutionary for the development of next-generation electronic devices, such as electric-skin and humanoid robotics. Graphene is intrinsically flexible due to its structural thinness in nature and are considered next-generation materials for wearable electronics. These devices usually experience a large mechanical deformation in use so as to achieve intimate conformal contact with human skin and to coordinate complex human motions, while heat dissipation has been a major limitation when the device is under a large mechanical strain. Unlike the small deformation (<1%) induced by intrinsic material factors such as lattice mismatch between material components in devices, a large mechanical deformation (>1%) by an external loading condition could lead to apparent changes to global geometric shapes and significantly impact thermal transport. In this study, we investigated the thermal conductivities of graphene under several large mechanical strains: 2.9%, 4.3%, and 6.1%. We used a refined opto-thermal Raman technique to characterize the thermal transport properties and discovered the thermal conductivities to be 2092 ± 502, 972 ± 87, 348 ± 52, and 97 ± 13 W/(m K) for the relaxed state, 2.9%, 4.3%, and 6.1% tensile strain, respectively. Our results showed a significant decreasing trend in thermal conductivities with an increasing mechanical strain. The findings in this study reveal new thermal transport mechanisms in 2D materials and shed light on building novel flexible nanoelectronic devices with enhanced thermal management. Monolayer indium selenide (InSe), a two-dimensional material, exhibits exceptional electronic and optical properties that can be significantly modulated via strain engineering. This study employed density functional theory to examine the structural and vibrational properties of monolayer InSe under varying biaxial strains. Phonon dispersion analysis confirmed the stability of monolayer InSe, as indicated by the absence of imaginary frequencies. The study extensively detailed how Raman and infrared spectra adjust under strain, showing shifts in peak positions and variations in intensity that reflect changes in lattice symmetry and electronic structures. Specific findings include the stiffening of the A′1 mode and the increased intensity of E″ and E′ modes under strain, suggesting enhanced polarizability and asymmetric vibrations. Moreover, the Raman intensity for the E′ mode at 167.3 cm−1 increased under both tensile and compressive strain due to enhanced polarizability and symmetry disruption, while the IR intensity for the A″2 mode at 192.1 cm−1 decreased, likely from diminished dipole moment changes. In contrast, the low-frequency modes, such as E″ at 36.8 cm−1, demonstrated insensitivity to strain, implying a minimal impact on heavier atoms within these modes. Overall, this study highlights the sensitivity of vibrational modes to strain-induced changes, providing valuable insights into the behavior of monolayer InSe under mechanical stress. Mechanical engineering of 2D materials allows continuous and reversible modulation of their electronic and photonic properties. Although photoluminescence (PL) measurement is an effective way to monitor the effects of mechanical forces on 2D semiconductors, there is currently a lack of techniques to enhance PL signals during stress application. This study presents an innovative mechanical engineering approach that integrates a dielectric microsphere as an atomic force microscopy (AFM) probe into a Raman-AFM system. Force–distance curve tests and COMSOL simulations were performed to analyze and estimate the compressive stress exerted by the microsphere. Importantly, the PL signals of transition metal dichalcogenides subjected to microsphere probe's force were enhanced and reveal distinct mechanical responses depending on the substrate rigidity: compressive pressures for rigid substrates and tensile strains for flexible ones. Notably, this strategy not only amplifies spectral signals in real time but also achieves fine stress modulation in the precise targeted material region, demonstrating its superiority in sensitive mechanical engineering applications. In this Tutorial, we overview recent developments to break and manipulate electromagnetic nonreciprocity in two-dimensional (2D) materials without relying on magnetic fields. To this purpose, we provide a general conductivity model to describe gyrotropic metasurfaces that exhibit nonreciprocity through different physical mechanisms enabled by 2D materials, including optical pumping, drifting electrons, ferromagnetic monolayers, mechanical strain, and spatiotemporal modulation. We describe in detail the resulting systems, focusing on near-field phenomena, associated to nonreciprocal bulk and edge surface plasmon propagation, and on far-field responses, related to Faraday/Kerr rotation and optical dichroism of waves propagating in free-space. Additionally, we review and contextualize recent advancements in magnet-free nonreciprocal devices based on 2D materials, ranging from Faraday rotators and optical dichrosim, to plasmonic and photonic isolators, hyperlenses, and tunable optical traps. We conclude by providing our outlook for the future development of this technology and its potential applications in areas such as communications, sensing, wave generation, and spectroscopy, among others. PN junctions play important roles in semiconductor devices. Flexoelectricity, an electromechanical coupling between strain gradient and electric polarization, has non-negligible contributions in nano-devices. The thermoflexoelectric effect is a phenomenon in which temperature gradients generate inhomogeneous strains and further induce flexoelectric polarizations. Therefore, temperature gradients can affect carrier transport in PN junctions through the thermoflexoelectric effect. In this paper, a one-dimensional model of the PN junction under a uniform temperature change is established. Exact solutions for the electromechanical fields in the PN junction are obtained for the first time. The effects of the temperature gradient, doping level, and flexoelectric coefficient on the electromechanical behaviors of the PN junction are numerically analyzed. The results indicate that carrier concentrations in the p and n regions are sensitive to temperature gradients because of the screening effect of the mobile charge on the flexoelectric polarization induced by the temperature gradient. Meanwhile, the flexoelectric field and the initial built-in electric field in the depletion region jointly determine the magnitude of the potential barrier, and thus, the temperature-gradient-induced flexoelectric field can tune the switching characteristics of the PN junction. Silicon, renowned for its remarkable energy density, has emerged as a focal point in the pursuit of high-energy storage solutions for the next generation. Nevertheless, silicon electrodes are known to undergo significant volume expansion during the insertion of lithium ions, leading to structural deformation and the development of internal stresses, and causing a rapid decline in battery capacity and overall lifespan. To gain deeper insights into the intricacies of charge rate effects, this study employs a combination of in situ measurements and computational modeling to elucidate the cyclic performance of composite silicon electrodes. The findings derived from the established model and curvature measurement system unveil the substantial alterations in stress and deformation as a consequence of varying charge rates. Notably, the active layer experiences compressive forces that diminish as the charge rate decreases. At a charge rate of 0.2, the active layer endures a maximum stress of 89.145 MPa, providing a comprehensive explanation for the observed deterioration in cycling performance at higher charge rates. This study not only establishes a fundamental basis for subsequent stress analyses of silicon electrodes but also lays a solid foundation for further exploration of the impact of charge rates on composite silicon electrodes. Conductor on round core (CORC®) cables have emerged as a leading contender in high-temperature superconducting (HTS) cable designs, offering exceptional performance with current densities surpassing 300 A / mm 2 and the ability to withstand high axial tensile and compressive strain. Despite their remarkable properties, optimizing CORC® cables remains a challenge, particularly in accurately estimating their AC losses under real-world conditions, which necessitates advanced numerical modeling techniques. Building upon recent advancements in simulating straight CORC® cables, where Bean's-like current profiles were observed across the actual thickness of wound superconducting tapes, we introduce a tailored computational approach to enhance the processing speed of three-dimensional (3D) finite element models of wound HTS tapes. This tailored approach is specifically designed to address the complexities of bent CORC® cables, which exhibit helicoidal winding and are subjected to varying mechanical strain. We focus on analyzing their electromagnetic performance by transitioning from idealized straight-former designs to more realistic scenarios where cable-formers are bent to accommodate flexible cable routing or coil configurations. Our simulations consider a typical cable design comprising three 4 mm-wide SuperPower tapes (SCS4050) with a twist pitch of 40 mm. We demonstrate the capability to accurately model the full electromagnetic behavior of bent CORC® cables without the reduction of degrees of freedom, providing valuable insights into their performance under bending conditions. In this study, a pure Ta diffusion layer and Ta deposition coating were diffused and deposited on the Ti6Al4V substrate by the double glow plasma surface alloying technique. The surface morphology, cross-sectional element distribution, and phases were characterized by SEM, energy-dispersive x-ray spectrometer (EDS), and XRD. Both the mechanical properties and the wear resistance were investigated through the nanoindentation test and reciprocating friction-wear test. In addition, wear simulation was also examined. Ta deposition coating showed a denser and typical cauliflower structure. The Ta diffusion layer, however, exhibited two distinct types of structure: cellular grains and a kind of structure, aggregated and white, with a greater concentration of the Ta element. The cross-sectional morphology and the EDS result showed that a metallurgical bonding was developed between the coating and substrate. In addition, based on the result of nanoindentation, the Ta diffusion layer had higher hardness, elastic modulus, and initial yield strength than that of Ta deposition coating. However, the reciprocating friction-wear result revealed that the Ta deposition coating displayed better wear resistance compared with the Ta diffusion layer due to the thin thickness and inhomogeneous Ta element concentration. The wear simulation result revealed that the stable highest contact temperature is 103.7 °C by nonlinear curve fitting, and the Ta diffusion layer showed the highest equivalent stress. The primary objective of the present investigation is to elucidate the operative micromechanisms influencing the strain rate sensitivity and activation volume in (FeCrNi)99Si1 and FeMnNi medium-entropy alloys. Room-temperature nanoindentation experiments at different loading rates were performed to study the evolution of the strain rate sensitivity and activation volume in (FeCrNi)99Si1 and FeMnNi medium-entropy alloys. The (FeCrNi)99Si1 samples were subjected to plane strain deformation by rolling at 77 and 300 K to study the effect of temperature on the strain rate sensitivity, while the FeMnNi and (FeCrNi)99Si1 samples were subjected to simple shear deformation by high-pressure torsion at 300 K to examine the effect of strains. Contrary to the well-documented trend observed in fcc metals and alloys, where the strain rate sensitivity typically increases with decreasing grain size, the present study reveals a distinct behavior for the current alloys. Similarly, these alloys are characterized by extremely low activation volumes of a few tens of b3 compared to 100–1000 b3 for conventional fcc metals and alloys in the microcrystalline grain size regime. Unlike conventional fcc metals and alloys, there is an insignificant change in the activation volume of the current high-/medium-entropy alloy (H/MEA) with decreasing grain size from the microcrystalline to nanocrystalline regime. The unique evolution of strain rate sensitivity and activation volume in H/MEAs is explained in terms of the evolution of distinct dislocation structures as well as synergistic operation of additional mechanisms such as twinning, phase transformation from fcc to hcp phases, cluster strengthening, and short-range ordering due to the aperiodic energy landscape existing in MEAs. A Conductor on Round Core (CORC) cable wound with a high-temperature superconductor is an important cable concept for high-current density applications. It is widely used in large power systems because of its advantages of good flexibility and high engineering current density. However, the complex design structure of CORC cable makes it very difficult to understand its electromagnetic properties (such as AC loss). In particular, the different winding directions of each layer in multi-layer cable have a great influence on its electromagnetic characteristics. In this paper, the H-method is used to solve the electromagnetism and mechanics equations. The influence of the winding direction of CORC cable on its electromagnetic field distribution characteristics, AC loss, and mechanical variation under the action of external magnetic field is investigated. The AC loss study of single-layer cable reveals that when the applied magnetic field is increased from 0.01 to 0.02 and 0.03 T, the AC loss peak of the cable increases by 107 and 103 orders of magnitude, respectively, indicating that the effect of low applied magnetic field on the AC loss of the cable is more significant. For multi-layer cables, cables with opposite winding directions have a greater depth of current density penetration than cables with the same winding direction. In addition, the mechanical variations of multi-layer cables with different winding orientations are explored. The results show that the Mises stress in the cable with the same winding direction is about 32% higher than that of the cable with the opposite winding direction, which indicates that the method of winding the cable in the opposite direction between adjacent layers of tape can avoid excessive mechanical stress. Traditionally, stress fluctuations in flowing and deformed materials are overlooked, with an obvious focus on average stresses in a continuum mechanical approximation. However, these fluctuations, often dismissed as "noise," hold the potential to provide direct insights into the material structure and its structure-stress coupling, uncovering detailed aspects of fluid transport and relaxation behaviors. Despite advancements in experimental techniques allowing for the visualization of these fluctuations, their significance remains largely untapped as modeling efforts continue to target Newtonian fluids within the confines of Gaussian noise assumptions. In the present work, a comparative analysis of stress fluctuations in two distinct microstructural models is carried out: the temporary network model and the hydrodynamic dumbbell model. Despite both models conforming to the upper convected Maxwell model at a macroscopic level, the temporary network model predicts non-Gaussian fluctuations. We find that stress fluctuations within the temporary network model exhibit more pronounced abruptness at the local scale, with only an enlargement of the control volume leading to a gradual Gaussian-like noise, diminishing the differences between the two models. These findings underscore the heightened sensitivity of fluctuating rheology to microstructural details and the microstructure–flow coupling, beyond what is captured by macroscopically averaged stresses. Resonators based on two-dimensional (2D) materials have exceptional properties for application as nanomechanical sensors, which allows them to operate at high frequencies with high sensitivity. However, their performance as nanomechanical sensors is currently limited by their low quality (Q)-factor. Here, we make use of micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) to apply pure in-plane mechanical strain, enhancing both their resonance frequency and Q-factor. In contrast to earlier work, the 2D material resonators are fabricated on the MEMS actuators without any wet processing steps using a dry-transfer method. A platinum clamp, which is deposited by electron beam-induced deposition, is shown to be effective in fixing the 2D membrane to the MEMS and preventing slippage. By in-plane straining the membranes in a purely mechanical fashion, we increase the tensile energy, thereby diluting dissipation. This way, we show how dissipation dilution can increase the Q -factor of 2D material resonators by 91%. The presented MEMS actuated dissipation dilution method does not only pave the way toward higher Q -factors in resonators based on 2D materials, but also provides a route toward studies of the intrinsic loss mechanisms of 2D materials in the monolayer limit. We present here experimental verification of a theoretical model previously developed to estimate internal mechanical stress in steel-based elements by means of non-contact electromagnetic induction measurements. For large-diameter (150 mm) SiC epitaxial wafers with thick n− epilayers, stress analysis based on the finite element method and defect characterization near the epi/sub interface by synchrotron x-ray topography were performed. Observations on epitaxial wafers with epilayer thicknesses of 10, 20, 50, and 100 μm revealed that basal plane dislocation (BPD) half-loops were formed near triangular defects or from the edge of the wafer at an epilayer thickness of 50 μm and above. Two types of BPD half-loops with different edge components were observed: one with an extra half-plane above the core and present on the substrate side, and the other with a Burgers vector of opposite sign and present in the epilayer and at the epi/sub interface, forming an interfacial dislocation. The signs of these BPDs are consistent with those predicted from the calculation results, which mitigate compressive and tensile stresses in the epilayer and the substrate, respectively. It is considered that a thicker epilayer increases tensile stress in the substrate, which induces the formation of the BPD with an extra half-plane above the core on the substrate side. The distribution of the BPD half-loop width was also analyzed and compared with the calculated shear stress distribution caused by the radial temperature gradient. Calculations considering the local stress near the triangular defect revealed that the tensile stress near the epi/sub interface locally increases, exceeding the critical stress to form BPD, with an extra half-plane above the core for wafers with an epilayer thickness above 50 μm. In this work, the Common Model of Multi-phase Strength and Equation of State (CMMP) model was applied to tin. Specifically, calibrations of the strength-specific elements of the CMMP foundation were developed with a combination of experiments and theory, and then the model was validated experimentally. The first element of the foundation is a multi-phase analytic treatment of the melt temperature and the shear modulus for the solid phases. These models were parameterized for each phase based on ab initio calculations using the software VASP (Vienna Ab initio Simulations Package) based on density functional theory. The shear modulus model for the ambient β phase was validated with ultrasonic sound speed measurements as a function of pressure and temperature. The second element of the foundation is a viscoplastic strength model for the β phase, upon which strength for inaccessible higher-pressure phases can be scaled as necessary. The stress–strain response of tin was measured at strain rates of 10 − 3 to 3 × 10 3 s − 1 and temperatures ranging from 87 to 373 K. The Preston–Tonks–Wallace (PTW) strength model was fit to that data using Bayesian model calibration. For validation, six forward and two reverse Taylor impact experiments were performed at different velocities to measure large plastic deformation of tin at strain rates up to 10 5 s − 1 . The PTW model accurately predicted the deformed shapes of the cylinders, with modest discrepancies attributed to the inability of PTW to capture the effects of twinning and dynamic recrystallization. Some material in the simulations of higher velocity Taylor cylinders reached the melting temperature, thus testing the multiphase model because of the presence of a second phase, the liquid. In simulations using a traditional modeling approach, the abrupt reduction of strength upon melt resulted in poor predictions of the deformed shape and non-physical temperatures. With CMMP, the most deformed material points evolved gradually to a mixed solid–liquid but never a fully liquid state, never fully lost strength, stayed at the melt temperature as the latent heat of fusion was absorbed, and predicted the deformed shape well. Fullerene-assembled low-dimensional materials have been experimentally realized in polymorphic forms and have attracted significant interest very recently. Here, we predict a two-dimensional (2D) honeycomb lattice material TM2(C60)3 (TM = Cr, Mo, and W) assembled from exohedral metallofullerene clusters TM(C60)3 that could exhibit planar triangular geometries. According to first-principles calculations combined with Monte Carlo simulations, we suggest that these 2D assembled materials exhibit various exotic physical properties, including ferromagnetism, ferroelectricity, and quantum anomalous Hall effect. Interestingly, mechanical strains could effectively tune their magnetic moments and switch the conducting spin channel of the Dirac bands at the Fermi level. Spin–orbit coupling induces a current density in the ground state, which consequently requires a generalization for meta-generalized gradient approximations. That is, the exchange–correlation energy has to be constructed as an explicit functional of the current density, and a generalized kinetic energy density has to be formed to satisfy theoretical constraints. Herein, we generalize our previously presented formalism of spin–orbit current density functional theory [Holzer et al., J. Chem. Phys. 157, 204102 (2022)] to non-magnetic and magnetic periodic systems of arbitrary dimension. In addition to the ground-state exchange–correlation potential, analytical derivatives such as geometry gradients and stress tensors are implemented. The importance of the current density is assessed for band gaps, lattice constants, magnetic transitions, and Rashba splittings. We determine the surface tension of aqueous electrolyte solutions in contact with non-polar dielectric media using a thermomechanical approach, which involves deriving the stress tensor from the thermodynamic potential of an inhomogeneous fluid. To obtain the surface tension, we calculate both the normal and tangential pressures using the components of the stress tensor, recently derived by us [Y. A. Budkov and P. E. Brandyshev, J. Chem. Phys. 159, 174103 (2023)] within the framework of Wang's variational field theory. Using this approach, we derive an analytical expression for the surface tension in the linear approximation. At low ionic concentrations, this expression represents the classical Onsager–Samaras limiting law. By utilizing only one fitting parameter, which is related to the affinity of anions to the dielectric boundary, we successfully approximated experimental data on the surface tension of several aqueous electrolyte solutions. Flow-enhanced nucleation (FEN) of n-pentacontahectane (C150) under biaxial extensional flows of varying strain rate ratios is studied using nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulation. The nucleation rates thus calculated are used to test previously published FEN models based on invariants of the conformation tensor of Kuhn segments and the extra stress tensor. Models based on the conformation tensor provide a more accurate description of FEN observed in biaxial flow simulations than those based on the extra stress tensor. In addition, the formation of nematic domains previously reported to be stabilized by shear or extensional flow is absent in equibiaxial flows. However, such domains do form in non-equibiaxial flows, and nucleation occurs in these domains preferentially. Stretching or compression can induce significant energetic, geometric, and spectroscopic changes in materials. To fully exploit these effects in the design of mechano- or piezo-chromic materials, self-healing polymers, and other mechanoresponsive devices, a detailed knowledge about the distribution of mechanical strain in the material is essential. Within the past decade, Judgement of Energy DIstribution (JEDI) analysis has emerged as a useful tool for this purpose. Based on the harmonic approximation, the strain energy in each bond length, bond angle, and dihedral angle of the deformed system is calculated using quantum chemical methods. This allows the identification of the force-bearing scaffold of the system, leading to an understanding of mechanochemical processes at the most fundamental level. Here, we present a publicly available code that generalizes the JEDI analysis, which has previously only been available for isolated molecules. Now, the code has been extended to two- and three-dimensional periodic systems, supramolecular clusters, and substructures of chemical systems under various types of deformation. Due to the implementation of JEDI into the Atomic Simulation Environment, the JEDI analysis can be interfaced with a plethora of program packages that allow the calculation of electronic energies for molecular systems and systems with periodic boundary conditions. The automated generation of a color-coded three-dimensional structure via the Visual Molecular Dynamics program allows insightful visual analyses of the force-bearing scaffold of the strained system. In this paper, a new Stroh formalism for gradient electro-mechanics is derived for the first time, which is both mathematically concise and numerically powerful, applicable to generally coupled anisotropic material systems. Based on this new formalism, the complicated Lamb wave in flexoelectric and piezoelectric plates is investigated. The dispersion equation is obtained by solving the eigenvalue problem along with the unconditionally stable dual-variable and position method. From the obtained dispersion equation, the dispersion curves and mode shapes of the Lamb wave are calculated by the 1D form of the multidimensional moduli ratio convergence method. Two important and interesting features are observed from our analysis: One is the difference in the mode shape symmetry between the piezoelectric and flexoelectric cases, and the other is the size-dependent property of the flexoelectric effect as observed by nondimensionalization. These features are further illustrated by comparing the dispersion curves and wave-mode shapes among the three different material models (purely piezoelectric, purely flexoelectric, and flexoelectric and piezoelectric coupled). The newly derived Stroh formalism offers a robust, concise, and unified approach for dealing with strain gradient electro-mechanic materials with crystal systems of general anisotropy. In gas gun experiments, a graded density impactor (GDI) is used to achieve quasi-isentropic loading. However, inconsistency between the designed and experimental loading profiles, mainly caused by by-products during preparation, limits the application of GDI for a long time. In this work, a kind of W/Ti GDI with advantages of a wide density range of 4.5–19.3 g/cm3 and high structural designability was designed and synthesized. Each of mid-layers of the W/Ti GDI was composed of W and Ti without the formation of an intermetallic compound, and had good parallelism and flatness. This provides a prerequisite for good agreement between the designed and experimental loading profiles. Due to the high designability of the GDI, quasi-isentropic loading with different stress-paths was achieved by controlling the structure of the GDI. Then, independently controlling peak stress and strain rates of loading was successfully achieved by changing the flyer velocity and the type of the W/Ti GDI. An extension of a constitutive law for 1,3,5-triamino-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene (TATB) is proposed with a focus on the calibration of a crystal plasticity law. TATB, a highly anisotropic energetic molecular crystal used in explosive formulations, can be subjected to high-pressure and high-temperature conditions, either under high strain-rate deformation or shock loading. The existing thermodynamically consistent model, fully informed by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, includes nonlinear elasticity as well as a phase-field by reaction pathway formalism under large strain for the modeling of TATB behavior upon pressure as well as its well-known twinning–buckling deformation mechanism. However, it has been observed that TATB single crystal can accommodate large deformations through dislocation-mediated plasticity, a feature not included in the mesoscale model. In the present work, we take advantage of the microscopic flow surface, previously computed through MD calculations, to calibrate a crystal plasticity law, extending the capability of the continuum model currently limited to low velocity impacts and moderate strain rate. Indeed, the microscopic flow surface, defined as a 3D stress-at-first-defect-nucleation contains all information about TATB single crystal mechanical response under directional shear loading, including twinning, buckling, and plastic events. The calibration process uses differential evolution optimization to calibrate TATB basal and transverse slip systems critical stresses to reproduce the microscopic flow surface. In this work, we investigate the possibilities of performing charge and spin current rectifications using graphene nano-ribbon in the presence of Rashba spin–orbit (SO) interaction. More specifically, we explore the specific role of mechanical strain on these two different types of current rectifications. The system is simulated by a tight-binding framework, where all the results are worked out based on the standard Green's function formalism. In order to have current rectification, an asymmetry is required, which is incorporated through uncorrelated disorder among the constituent lattice points. From our extensive numerical analysis, we find that reasonably large charge and spin current rectifications can be obtained under strained conditions, and all the physical pictures are valid for a broad range of tight-binding parameters. The rectification properties are studied mostly for zigzag graphene nano-ribbons; however, an armchair ribbon is also taken into account for a clear comparison. Purpose: To compare the biomechanical responses of a normal mandible to an osteoporotic mandible with two-implant--supported magnetic attachments. Materials and Methods: A 3D finite-element model of a two-implant--supported mandibular overdenture with magnetic attachments was developed, and normal and osteoporotic bone samples were prepared. Four types of load were applied to the overdenture in each model: 100 N vertical and oblique loads on the right first molar, and a 100 N vertical load on the right canine and incisors. Biomechanical behaviors of the peri-implant bone, implant, and mucosa were recorded. Maximum equivalent stresses and elastic strains were analyzed. Results: Equivalent elastic strain in osteoporotic cortical and cancellous bone was 9% to 71% and was 142% and 207% greater than in normal cortical bone, respectively. Equivalent elastic strain in the first molar oblique loading condition was 101% to 190% greater than in the first molar vertical loading condition. Conclusions: Osteoporotic cancellous bone was weaker and less resistant to deformation than normal bone, and oblique loading was more harmful than vertical loading. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ferroelectric materials are widely used in actuators, exciters, and memory devices due to their excellent electromechanical properties. However, the instinctive brittleness of ferroelectric materials makes them easy to fracture under external load. Since giant strain gradient can be easily generated near the crack tip, the flexoelectric effect is indispensable in the research of fracture properties of ferroelectric materials. With the combination of time-dependent Ginzburg–Landau theory and phase-field model, the electromechanical behavior of PbTiO 3 in the vicinity of the crack tip is determined in this work. The simulation results demonstrate that the domain structure near the crack tip becomes asymmetric with the flexoelectric effect. The polarization switching-induced toughening, which is characterized by the J -integral, depends on the direction of the crack relative to the original polarization orientation. Furthermore, the longitude flexoelectric coefficient f 11 has more significant impact on the fracture toughness than that of the transverse flexoelectric coefficient f 12 and the shear flexoelectric coefficient f 44. Low-crosslinked polymer networks have recently been found to behave auxetically when subjected to small tensions, that is, their Poisson's ratio ν becomes negative. In addition, for specific state points, numerical simulations revealed that diamond-like networks reach the limit of mechanical stability, exhibiting values of ν = −1, a condition that we define as hyper-auxeticity. This behavior is interesting per se for its consequences in materials science but is also appealing for fundamental physics because the mechanical instability is accompanied by evidence of criticality. In this work, we deepen our understanding of this phenomenon by performing a large set of equilibrium and stress–strain simulations in combination with phenomenological elasticity theory. The two approaches are found to be in good agreement, confirming the above results. We also extend our investigations to disordered polymer networks and find that the hyper-auxetic behavior also holds in this case, still manifesting a similar critical-like behavior as in the diamond one. Finally, we highlight the role of the number density, which is found to be a relevant control parameter determining the elastic properties of the system. It has been assumed that the negative divergence of all stress tensors in common use yields the same force. This work finds that this is untrue, and, in fact, can vary wildly. We demonstrate this for the hydrogen atom, the one-particle isotropic harmonic oscillator, and a particle in an infinite spherical well where the exact density, pair-density, and the first order reduced density matrix are known for ground and excited states without any approximation. The Ehrenfest stress-tensor is introduced as any stress-tensor whose negative divergence will yield the corresponding Ehrenfest force for the same system when the exact wave-function is utilized. Stress-tensors within the literature are examined to show those that are Ehrenfest stress-tensors. Those that differ are demonstrated by how they differ within an exact formulation. The topology of the Ehrenfest force field (EhF) is investigated as a tool for describing local interactions in molecules and intermolecular complexes. The EhF is obtained by integrating the electronic force operator over the coordinates of all but one electron, which requires knowledge of both the electron density and the reduced pair density. For stationary states, the EhF can also be obtained as minus the divergence of the kinetic stress tensor, although this approach leads to well-documented erroneous asymptotic behavior at large distances from the nuclei. It is shown that these pathologies disappear using the electron density functions and that the EhF thus obtained displays the correct behavior in real space, with no spurious critical points or attractors. Therefore, its critical points can be unambiguously obtained and classified. Test cases, including strained molecules, isomerization reactions, and intermolecular interactions, were analyzed. Various chemically relevant facts are highlighted: for example, non-nuclear attractors are generally absent, potential hydrogen–hydrogen interactions are detected in crowded systems, and a bifurcation mechanism is observed in the isomerization of HCN. Moreover, the EhF atomic basins are less charged than those of the electron density. Although integration of the EhF over regions of real space can also be performed to yield the corresponding atomic forces, several numerical drawbacks still need to be solved if electron density functions are to be used for that purpose. Programmable locomotion of molecules inside the carbon nanotube (CNT) has a significant role in controlling the reactions and delivery systems based on nanotubes. Using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations as well as the theoretical approach, we evaluate the oscillation of C60 inside the CNTs that are subjected to strain gradients from both sides. The molecular dynamics simulations are implemented by LAMMPS open-source software. Using this program, the van der Waals (vdW) interactions are established between C60 and nanotube, and the simulations are performed in canonical ensemble. The strain gradient applied on CNT provides the restoring force of the oscillation of C60. The potential energy of fullerene finds the minimum value at the unstrained region of CNT, which makes it the equilibrium point of oscillation. The amplitude of the oscillations is shown to be related to the thermal energy of C60. The frequency of the oscillations depends on the magnitude of the strain gradient applied on the nanotubes. At higher strain gradients of CNTs, we observe the increase in the frequency due to the increase in the restoring force acting on the fullerene molecule. We exploit the strained carbon nanotubes to control the position of C60 inside the nanotube. It has been shown that by changing the strain gradient of CNT, it is possible to steer the locomotion of C60 to different points inside the nanotube. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigated the relationship between porosity and flexoelectricity for aluminum (Al)/polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) composites. Neat PVDF, composites of micron aluminum (μAl)/PVDF, and composites of nano aluminum (nAl)/PVDF were 3D printed, and the flexoelectric response was measured using a cantilever beam test setup. Voids (up to 72.4 mm3) were incorporated into the samples by decreasing the infill percent of the 3D printed material. We found that increasing the porosity via millimeter scale voids incorporated into the infill pattern decreased the average effective flexoelectric coefficient relative to the near full-density (100% infill) control samples. This contrasts with other studies that have shown increasing micron scale porosity increases the flexoelectric coefficient. In addition, we measured higher flexoelectric responses for nAl/PVDF than μAl/PVDF as well as for samples printed by the Hyrel 3D SR printer as opposed to the Ender 3 V2 printer. These results indicate that charge generation due to flexoelectricity can be altered by changing parameters such as porosity, particle size of inclusions, or manufacturing method. Smaller voids and fine particles can induce larger strain gradients than larger inhomogeneities, leading to increased flexoelectric coefficients. A study of residual mechanical stresses in the surface layer of the HgCdTe/CdTe/ZnTe/GaAs structure based on the registration of the second harmonic signal characteristics of reflected IR laser radiation from the surface of the studied sample passed through a nonlinear crystal was carried out. It is shown that such a sensitive method makes it possible to obtain information about the anisotropy of the polarization of the reflected radiation, caused by the residual deformation. Observations of the fine structure of the angular sweep of the second harmonic signal suggest a complex structure of residual stresses related to the presence of misoriented areas. Based on the variational field theory framework, we extend our previous mean-field formalism [Y. A. Budkov and A. L. Kolesnikov, JStatMech 2022, 053205.2022], taking into account the electrostatic correlations of the ions. We employ a general covariant approach and derive a total stress tensor that considers the electrostatic correlations of ions. This is accomplished through an additional term that depends on the autocorrelation function of the local electric field fluctuations. Utilizing the derived total stress tensor and applying the mechanical equilibrium condition, we establish a general expression for the disjoining pressure of the Coulomb fluids, confined in a pore with a slit-like geometry. Using this equation, we derive an asymptotic expression for the disjoining pressure in a slit-like pore with non-electrified conductive walls. Present theory is the basis for future modeling of the mechanical stresses that occur in electrode pores with conductive charged walls, immersed in liquid phase electrolytes beyond the mean-field theory. The response of plane-parallel 2 mm thick samples of 47.3Ni-52.7Ti alloy was studied in two series of planar impact tests at temperatures between 300 and 473 K and between 473 and 318 K (heating to 473 K followed by cooling). In two additional series, the samples of 0.4–4 mm thickness were tested at 300 and 338 K (after preheating up to 473 K). In all the tests, the samples were loaded by 1 mm thick copper impactors having velocities equal to 314 ± 2 m/s. The velocity of the rear sample surface was continuously monitored by a laser Doppler velocimeter. It was shown that substantial, by an order of magnitude, variation of Hugoniot elastic limit σ H E L and compressive strength Y of the nitinol with temperature are caused by the martensite–austenite transformation and its reversal. The variation of the dynamic tensile (spall) strength σ s p of the nitinol along the heating–cooling path was found similar to that of σ H E L although the difference between σ s p values of austenite and martensite, ∼20%, is much more modest than in the case of σ H E L . The test series performed at constant temperatures with samples of different thicknesses allows one to conclude that the plastic deformation in shocked austenite is presumably realized by dislocation motion and multiplication controlled by phonon viscosity. In the shocked martensite, the plastic deformation mechanism at a stress lower than ∼0.3 GPa is likely a thermally activated combination of deformation twinning and slip of kinking dislocations. An all-optical photoinduced lensing method is used to excite and monitor acoustic waves in liquids. Following optical absorption, the laser pulse induces a localized temperature gradient that launches pressure waves in the excited region at the nanosecond time scale. This generates a lens-like optical element in the sample. A probe laser beam senses the refractive index change due to the acoustic and thermal effects. Piezo-optic and thermo-optic coefficients govern how the refractive index of a material changes in response to mechanical stress and temperature variations, respectively. These effects are connected to the physical properties of the liquids and can be accessed by theoretically describing the intensity signal. A complete set of physical properties of ten liquids are quantitatively described in this work. Properties of fragmentation from an explosively driven 316L stainless steel spherical shell section fabricated by a laser powder bed additive manufacturing process with minimal surface finishing are investigated. This shell is driven by an insensitive high explosive, resulting in high strain rate deformation (>8 × 103 s−1) and failure of the stainless steel. Photonic Doppler velocimetry measures the expansion rate; dynamic radiography and high-speed imaging capture the fracture behavior of the stainless steel. The fracture response of the additively manufactured stainless steel shell is compared to published experimental results on additively manufactured 316L stainless steel and conventionally manufactured wrought 316L and 304 stainless steel shell fragmentation. Despite preferred crack orientation, suggesting the influence of surface grooves on fracture time, fragment size is identical to that measured in a similar experiment on wrought 304 stainless steel. Further analysis indicates that the 316L additively manufactured stainless steel shell exhibits comparable spall strength and fragmentation toughness to conventionally manufactured stainless steel yet lower failure strain due to surface stress concentrations. A comprehensive physics-based modeling framework for electromigration (EM) in copper nano-interconnects is presented. It combines the three stages of stress evolution, void nucleation, and void dynamics in a single fully coupled and consolidated platform. Mechanical stress evolution, pre- and post-void nucleation, and its impact on void dynamics are deciphered, which enables accurate predictions of EM aging processes as validated by dedicated EM experiments. Subsequently, the experimentally validated model is utilized to shed light on the impact of a number of manufacturing variables, namely, line extension, via taper angle, and the effectiveness of the via bottom flux divergence point. A linear correlation between the ion leakage through the via bottom barrier and the peak tensile stress at the cathode was observed in long lines. In short lines, a blocked cathode end with atomic leakage through the anode end weakens the back-stress effect and threatens the Blech effect induced interconnect immortality. Increasing the line extension length was shown to increase the EM lifetime by about 40%. This impact was saturated beyond 1 critical dimension of line extension. On the other hand, the via taper angle increased the upstream EM lifetime by about twofold when the taper angle was increased from 0° to 30°, which indicates that the change of via taper angle has a stronger impact on EM lifetime compared to the line extension. Rare-earth nickelates (RENiO3: RE≠La) exhibit metal–insulator transition (MIT) properties that enable potential applications, such as critical temperature resistance thermistors, optoelectronic switches, and correlated logical devices. Nevertheless, their abrupt structural distortion across MIT results in mechanical stresses and forms microcracks within the bulk RENiO3, and this irreversibly reduces their resistive change during MIT that further impedes their practical applications. Herein, we demonstrate a compositing strategy that simultaneously improves the MIT performances and mechanical strength of RENiO3 by introducing a secondary phase of perovskite oxides with similar lattice parameters and high resistivity. Despite its much higher resistivity compared to RENiO3 (e.g., RE = Sm or Pr), introducing the LaMnO3 compositing phase under high oxygen pressure surprisingly reduces the matrix resistivity. Furthermore, such a compositing process (e.g., 20% LaMnO3) also effectively improves the mechanical strength of RENiO3 by eight times. Such counterintuitive variations are attributed to the similar structure and lattice parameter between RENiO3 and the perovskite composites that modify the grain boundary. As a result, the resistive change is more abrupt across MIT owing to the reduction in the resistivity associated with the grain boundary, while the defect generation and propagation are also suppressed that improves the mechanical properties. We present computational results on electronic, magnetic, and structural properties of CoVMnSb, a quaternary Heusler alloy. Our calculations indicate that this material may crystallize in two energetically close structural phases: inverted and regular cubic. The inverted cubic phase is the ground state, with ferrimagnetic alignment, and around 80% spin polarization. Despite having a relatively large bandgap in the minority-spin channel close to the Fermi level, this phase does not undergo a half-metallic transition under pressure. This is explained by the "pinning" of the Fermi level at the minority-spin states at the Γ point. At the same time, the regular cubic phase is half-metallic and retains its perfect spin polarization under a wide range of mechanical strain. Transition to a regular cubic phase may be attained by applying uniform pressure (but not biaxial strain). In practice, this pressure may be realized by an atomic substitution of non-magnetic atoms (Sb) with another non-magnetic atom (Si) of a smaller radius. Our calculations indicate that 25% substitution of Sb with Si results in a half-metallic regular cubic phase being the ground state. In addition, CoVMnSb0.5Si0.5 retains its half-metallic properties under a considerable range of mechanical pressure, as well as exhibits thermodynamic stability, thus making this alloy attractive for potential spintronic applications. Liquid storage tanks are often arranged in rows with small spacing in practical applications, which may cause mutual influence under earthquake action and even aggravate the seismic damage of liquid storage tanks. Adding the vibration barrier (ViBa) into the foundation between the adjacent liquid storage tanks forms a new type of seismic control method. Considering important factors such as liquid–solid–soil coupling, liquid sloshing behavior, and structure–soil–structure interaction (SSSI), a refined 3D numerical calculation model of the adjacent liquid storage tanks with three ViBas is established by ADINA. The influence of seismic wave incidence angle on the seismic responses of the liquid storage tanks and the control effect of ViBa are studied, and the parameter influence analysis is carried out. The results show that the ViBa significantly control the seismic responses and liquid sloshing wave height of the adjacent liquid storage tanks, and the damping ratio of the liquid sloshing wave height is between 30% and 40%. When the seismic incidence angle is between 30 ∘ and 60 ∘ , the dynamic responses of the liquid storage tank is larger. With the increase of the seismic incidence angle, the control effect of the ViBa on the effective stress, hoop stress, axial compressive stress, and liquid pressure first increases and then decreases. When the liquid storage tank is close to full state, the control effect is most significant at an incidence angle of 60 ∘ , and the control effect of the ViBa on the liquid storage tank with medium height-diameter ratio is the best.
