Desmond Babloo Singh, an 18-year-old from Temple, Texas, appeared to lead an ordinary life, but between 18 April and 24 November 2020, he developed a dangerous obsession with a young woman. After she had rejected his romantic advances and asked him to stop contacting her, his obsession escalated, leading to disturbing behaviour. Following the initial rejection, Singh launched a terrifying, months-long cyberstalking campaign using more than 100 social media and phone accounts and flooding the woman with messages featuring death threats, racial slurs and violent sexual content. He created fake accounts in her name, making it seem that she was the one posting offensive material. Singh's threats escalated, including posting manipulated images, such as one of her and her family hanging from nooses and another with her mother's face at a gravesite. His relentless harassment was designed to instil fear and terror. On 19 July 2020, the woman received another fake social media request from Singh. This time, the threat had escalated as Singh posted pictures of her family home and shared her parents' address, warning of a planned "party" there. When the police received an anonymous e-mail - claiming there was a bomb at the family home in Maryland, they rushed to the scene, only to find it was a hoax orchestrated by Singh, a dangerous act known as "swatting" intended to provoke an emergency police response. During their investigation, law enforcement found that Singh had "doxed" his victim, exposing her personal information online, including her birthdate, phone number and school, increasing her vulnerability. In April 2022, Singh was sentenced to an 18 months' sentence in federal prison, followed by one year house arrest sentence as part of a three-year supervised release (United States Attorney Office, 2022).
