In approaches to analyze material composition or in processing tasks using ultra-short laser ablation, it is of particular interest how ablated materials are distributed across the solid angle in front of the interaction region. We found that with our sub-10-fs laser in the regime from 10 14 W / c m 2 to 10 17 W / c m 2 , the solid angle of the ablation cone decreases significantly along with the laser intensity in a vacuum environment. For this observation, we used ion-beam analysis to investigate the distribution of tungsten collected on silicon catcher plates arranged across the solid angle of the laser-ablation cone. Moreover, we used other post-mortem tools, such as scanning electron microscopy and confocal laser scanning microscopy, to determine the ablation threshold of F t h = 468 mJ / c m 2 of our tungsten samples. We present a comprehensive guide to light-sheet microscopy (LSM) to assist scientists in navigating the practical implementation of this microscopy technique. Emphasizing the applicability of LSM to image both static microscale and nanoscale features, as well as diffusion dynamics, we present the fundamental concepts of microscopy, progressing through beam profile considerations, to image reconstruction. We outline key practical decisions in constructing a home-built system and provide insight into the alignment and calibration processes. We briefly discuss the conditions necessary for constructing a continuous 3D image and introduce our home-built code for data analysis. By providing this guide, we aim to alleviate the challenges associated with designing and constructing LSM systems and offer scientists new to LSM a valuable resource in navigating this complex field. In this paper, we explored the resistivity behavior of Sb7Se3 thin films on flexible mica. The films maintained their resistance characteristics through various thicknesses and bending cycles. With increasing bends, resistivity and phase transition temperature of both amorphous and crystalline states rose, while the resistance drift coefficient gradually increased. Raman and near infrared experiments confirmed the internal structural changes and bandgap enhancement after bending. Transmission electron microscopy showed enhanced crystallization and uniform element distribution after annealing. Atomic force microscopy observed cracks, explaining the property changes. Additionally, we developed a flexible Sb7Se3 thin-film resistive device with swift reversibility (∼10 ns) regardless of bending, opening new avenues for flexible information storage. The in situ growth dynamics of colloidal silver–gold core–shell (Ag@Au CS) nanoparticles (NPs) are studied using time-dependent second harmonic generation (SHG) and extinction spectroscopy. Four sequential additions of chloroauric acid, sodium citrate, and hydroquinone are added to a silver nanoparticle solution to form a gold shell around a 45 nm silver core under different reaction conditions, resulting in final sizes ranging from 80 to 125 nm in diameter. In the first addition, a bumpy, urchin-like surface morphology is produced, while the second, third, and fourth additions provide additional nanoparticle growth with the surface morphology becoming more smooth and uniform, as shown using transmission electron microscopy measurements. The in situ extinction spectra increase in intensity for each addition, where blue-shifting and spectral narrowing are observed as the Ag@Au CS NPs grow in size. The extinction spectra are compared to Mie theory simulations, showing general agreement at later stages of the reactions for smooth CS surfaces. The in situ SHG signal is dominated by surface-enhanced plasmonic hotspots at the early stages of the shell growth, followed by gradual decreases in signal as the surface becomes more smooth. Two-photon fluorescence is also monitored during the CS growth, showing complementary information for comparisons to the extinction and SHG results. The holistic study of the synthesis and characterization of Ag@Au CS nanoparticles using in situ SHG spectroscopy, extinction spectroscopy, and Mie theory simulations allows for a comprehensive analysis of the complex growth dynamics occurring at the nanoscale for developing optimized plasmonic nanomaterial properties. Ag-induced crystallization and layer exchange (AgILE) in a stack of amorphous Si/Ag/quartz substrate has been investigated using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning TEM-high angle annular dark field (STEM-HAADF) imaging, and electron tomography, covering length scales from a few tens of micrometers to a few tens of nanometers. The size of Ag grains in the underlying as-deposited Ag film varied from ∼10 to 500 nm. The following processes could be discerned using in situ heating of plan-view samples at 500 °C in STEM: (i) AgILE propagation preferentially along regions of small Ag grains, (ii) formation of pushed-up Ag in the vicinity of AgILE reaction cells, (iii) migration and agglomeration of pushed-up Ag on small and large Ag grains, which tend to inhibit AgILE and promote dendricity, and (iv) dispersion of pushed-up Ag, which tend to reduce dendricity. The resulting dendricity was largely confined to the peripheral regions of the impinging reaction cells and decreased with annealing time. In contrast, dendricity due to AgILE and crystallization at 550 °C is stable and extends right from the center to the periphery of the reaction cells. The microscopic mechanism of AgILE and, in particular, the effect of annealing temperature is investigated. The results are discussed in the light of existing literature and compared with Al-induced layer exchange. Annealing at temperature equal to or slightly less than 500 °C is found to be necessary in the case of AgILE to avoid dendricity and to obtain a continuous Si layer with large Si grains. This work reports heavy ion-irradiation effects in polycrystalline Fe3O4. For this matter, Fe/Fe3O4 heterostructures were irradiated in situ in a transmission electron microscopy with 1 MeV Kr ions at 50 K. Evidence of cubic to monoclinic transformation (a.k.a Verwey transition) was recorded in some magnetite grains upon cooling the sample (around 90 K); however, most of the oxide grains retain their cubic spinel structure. Irradiation effects were analyzed in the cubic phase up to a maximum dose of 38 dpa without the sign of amorphization. The extinction of first-order reflections was recorded at doses below 1 dpa, indicating the formation of a new (metastable) phase with half of the lattice parameters compared to the unirradiated Fe3O4 crystal. The formation of the new crystalline phase, which also presents a high resistance to amorphization, is related to the disordering of the cation lattice and the high mobility of the cation interstitials. The metastable phase readily recovers around 225 K during the natural warming of the sample from 50 K to room temperature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Achieving high material perfection in aluminum (Al) films and their associated Al/AlOx heterostructures is essential for enhancing the coherence time in superconducting quantum circuits. We grew Al films with thicknesses ranging from 3 to 30 nanometers (nm) epitaxially on sapphire substrates using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). An integral aspect of our work involved electron-beam (e-beam) evaporation to directly deposit aluminum oxide (Al2O3) films on the freshly grown ultrathin epitaxial Al films in an ultra-high-vacuum (UHV) environment. This in situ oxide deposition is critical for preventing the oxidation of parts of the Al films, avoiding the formation of undesired native oxides, and thereby preserving the nm-thick Al films in their pristine conditions. The thicknesses of our Al films in the study were accurately determined; for example, coherence lengths of 3.0 and 20.2 nm were measured in the nominal 3.0 and 20 nm thick Al films, respectively. These Al films were epitaxially grown on sapphire substrates, showing an orientational relationship, denoted as Al (111) ⟨ 2 1 ¯ 1 ¯ ⟩ ∥ sapphire (0001) [ 2 1 ¯ 1 ¯ 0 ]. The Al/sapphire interface was atomically ordered without any interfacial layers, as confirmed by in situ reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) and cross-sectional scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). All sample surfaces exhibited smoothness with a roughness in the range of 0.1–0.2 nm. Bragg interferometry (BI) is an imaging technique based on four-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy (4D-STEM) wherein the intensities of select overlapping Bragg disks are fit or more qualitatively analyzed in the context of simple trigonometric equations to determine local stacking order. In 4D-STEM based approaches, the collection of full diffraction patterns at each real-space position of the scanning probe allows the use of precise virtual apertures much smaller and more variable in shape than those used in conventional dark field imaging such that even buried interfaces marginally twisted from other layers can be targeted. With a coarse-grained form of dark field ptychography, BI uses simple physically derived fitting functions to extract the average structure within the illumination region and is, therefore, viable over large fields of view. BI has shown a particular advantage for selectively investigating the interlayer stacking and associated moiré reconstruction of bilayer interfaces within complex multi-layered structures. This has enabled investigation of reconstruction and substrate effects in bilayers through encapsulating hexagonal boron nitride and of select bilayer interfaces within trilayer stacks. However, the technique can be improved to provide a greater spatial resolution and probe a wider range of twisted structures, for which current limitations on acquisition parameters can lead to large illumination regions and the computationally involved post-processing can fail. Here, we analyze these limitations and the computational processing in greater depth, presenting a few methods for improvement over previous works, discussing potential areas for further expansion, and illustrating the current capabilities of this approach for extracting moiré-scale strain. Gratings are widely used for coupling into and out of evanescent and propagating electromagnetic modes, which are otherwise not accessible due to their large in-plane wave vector. A precise description of the optical response requires the knowledge of the grating geometry. Here, we present an investigation of the optical properties of dielectric gratings of sub-micron periodicity fabricated on a multilayer structure, which supports Bloch surface waves, by means of spectroscopic ellipsometry. Taking into account non-idealities, such as the finite spectral bandwidth, in the modeling process is shown to be a necessity for an accurate description of the observed spectra. The grating geometry determined from the analysis of ellipsometry data agrees very well with atomic force microscopy scans. Thus, our ellipsometric model is corroborated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent advances in electron, scanning probe, optical, and chemical imaging and spectroscopy yield bespoke data sets containing the information of structure and functionality of complex systems. In many cases, the resulting data sets are underpinned by low-dimensional simple representations encoding the factors of variability within the data. The representation learning methods seek to discover these factors of variability, ideally further connecting them with relevant physical mechanisms. However, generally, the task of identifying the latent variables corresponding to actual physical mechanisms is extremely complex. Here, we present an empirical study of an approach based on conditioning the data on the known (continuous) physical parameters and systematically compare it with the previously introduced approach based on the invariant variational autoencoders. The conditional variational autoencoder (cVAE) approach does not rely on the existence of the invariant transforms and hence allows for much greater flexibility and applicability. Interestingly, cVAE allows for limited extrapolation outside of the original domain of the conditional variable. However, this extrapolation is limited compared to the cases when true physical mechanisms are known, and the physical factor of variability can be disentangled in full. We further show that introducing the known conditioning results in the simplification of the latent distribution if the conditioning vector is correlated with the factor of variability in the data, thus allowing us to separate relevant physical factors. We initially demonstrate this approach using 1D and 2D examples on a synthetic data set and then extend it to the analysis of experimental data on ferroelectric domain dynamics visualized via piezoresponse force microscopy. Mechanical engineering of 2D materials allows continuous and reversible modulation of their electronic and photonic properties. Although photoluminescence (PL) measurement is an effective way to monitor the effects of mechanical forces on 2D semiconductors, there is currently a lack of techniques to enhance PL signals during stress application. This study presents an innovative mechanical engineering approach that integrates a dielectric microsphere as an atomic force microscopy (AFM) probe into a Raman-AFM system. Force–distance curve tests and COMSOL simulations were performed to analyze and estimate the compressive stress exerted by the microsphere. Importantly, the PL signals of transition metal dichalcogenides subjected to microsphere probe's force were enhanced and reveal distinct mechanical responses depending on the substrate rigidity: compressive pressures for rigid substrates and tensile strains for flexible ones. Notably, this strategy not only amplifies spectral signals in real time but also achieves fine stress modulation in the precise targeted material region, demonstrating its superiority in sensitive mechanical engineering applications. This work studies the influence of the adsorbed layer on the glass transition of thin films of polysulfone. Therefore, the growth kinetics of the irreversibly adsorbed layer of polysulfone on silicon substrates was first investigated using the solvent leaching approach, and the thickness of the remaining layer was measured with atomic force microscopy. Annealing conditions before leaching were varied in temperature and time (0–336 h). The growth kinetics showed three distinct regions: a pre-growth step where it was assumed that phenyl rings align parallel to the substrate at the shortest annealing times, a linear growth region, and a crossover from linear to logarithmic growth observed at higher temperatures for the longest annealing times. No signs of desorption were observed, pointing to the formation of a strongly adsorbed layer. Second, the glass transition of thin polysulfone films was studied in dependence on the film thickness using spectroscopic ellipsometry. Three annealing conditions were compared: two with only a tightly bound layer formed in the linear growth regime and one with both tightly bound and loosely adsorbed layers formed in the logarithmic growth regime. The onset thickness and increase in the glass transition temperature increases with annealing time and temperature. Plasmonic substrates have been extensively investigated due to their potential applications in fluorescence microscopy, chemical sensing, and photochemical reactions. The optical properties of the substrate depend on the spatial and temporal features of the plasmon excited. Hence, the ability to directly visualize plasmon dynamics is crucial. In this study, we investigated the spatial and temporal properties of plasmon excitation in a plasmonic nanobowl substrate consisting of a periodic hexagonal array of nanoscale bowl-like structures developed with self-assembly. Near-field transmission imaging revealed that multiple plasmon resonance bands are observed from visible to near-infrared spectral region, and the optical contrast of the image is dependent on the observed band. Near-field two-photon photoluminescence microscopy revealed that the probability of excitation inside each nanoscale bowl-like structure is greater than that in the surrounding area. Near-field time-resolved imaging revealed that the nanobowl substrate exhibited a substantially long plasmon dephasing time, exceeding 12 fs. Based on the spectral features of the near-field and far-field spectra, we found that optically dark plasmon mode is excited by the near-field illumination and only partly contributes to the long dephasing time observed. This fact indicates that the dephasing time is extended by some other mechanism in the periodic substrate. We revealed from this study that the enhanced optical fields induced in the nanobowl structure originate from the photosynergetic effect of the cavity mode and plasmon mode excited. An area-selectable Mg doping via ion implantation (I/I) is essential to realize gallium nitride (GaN) based power switching devices. Conventional post-implantation annealing forms considerable defects in the GaN, resulting in extremely low activation efficiency. The recent invention of ultrahigh-pressure annealing (UHPA) has substantially improved the p-type activation efficiency; however, the UHPA causes an unexpected Mg diffusion. Thus, both annealing processes resulted in a much lower Mg concentration in the GaN matrix than the Mg dose. In this study, the effect of a sequential N I/I for p-type Mg-implanted GaN was investigated by the correlative cathodoluminescence, transfer length method, scanning transmission electron microscopy, and atom probe tomography (APT) analyses. APT results have revealed that the sequential N I/I can successfully maintain the Mg concentration in the GaN matrix in the higher range of 1018 cm−3 or more. Our investigation suggests that sequential N I/I is a promising technique to maintain the Mg concentration higher and improve the p-type activation efficiency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Beam exit windows are crucial components of any particle accelerator as they provide an interface between the beamline vacuum and target material at atmospheric media. For high beam power machines, special materials and designs are required to withstand high radiation and mechanical loads, while minimizing energy loss during transition and maximizing window lifetime. This research investigates the impact of electron beam exposure to bulk CrMnV and CrMnTiV high entropy alloys (HEAs) with the primary goal of identifying suitable candidate materials for the design of robust and durable exit window settings. The selection criteria include intrinsic characteristics, power dissipation, and mechanical responses. According to the thermodynamic calculations, both equiatomic CrMnV and the addition of 7% of Ti with equiatomic CrMnV yield solid-solutions phases. The structural and mechanical properties of CrMnV and CrMnTiV samples were tested using field emission scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microcopy with energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, and nanoindentation before and after exposure to a dose of ∼66 kGy from a 10 MeV e-beam accelerator. Despite exhibiting beam transmission characteristics comparable to Cr and V, the indentation hardness of HEAs exceeded that of the Cr and V samples by five to six times. The examination of the CrMnTiV irradiated samples revealed organized deformation patterns depicting new features, which we suspect twinning and twin boundaries due to the addition of Ti to CrMnV. Temperature dependent bonding behavior plays a significant role in deciding properties of high temperature ceramics like boron carbide. However, few studies to date have addressed the physical properties of this class of materials with respect to their temperature dependent bonding nature. In addition, materials with the flexibility to accommodate variations in interatomic bonding and lattice vibrations over a wide range of temperatures are less known. In this work, temperature dependent structural analyses of carbon-rich boron carbide microflakes using in situ powder x-ray diffraction techniques (up to 1000 °C) supported by transmission electron microscopy measurements reveal that while most bonds in the rhombohedral structure increase in length with temperature; there is no change in certain bond lengths. However, there is an unusual decrease in length (∼1.03%) of the inter-cluster –C–(central boron)BC–C– without any polyhedral redistribution. This is accompanied by an increase in lattice vibrations without significant alteration to the crystal structure over the wide temperature range studied. Temperature dependent micro-Raman experiments further confirmed the above observations. The above bonding behavior could be directly correlated to the trends in reported results of high temperature conductivity via the model of hole hopping through specific atomic positions of the rhombohedral framework, thus opening the scope to investigate structure–property relationships in high temperature functional materials. Understanding the internal magnetization structure of an individual ferromagnetic nanoparticle (MNP) is crucial for deciphering its magnetic characteristics. Unfortunately, while certain techniques can measure the magnetic properties of an individual MNP, they fall short of accurately detecting the internal magnetization structure. In this work, micromagnetic simulations were employed to construct the internal magnetization structure of an individual CoFe2O4 (CFO) nanopyramid, and the energy jump behavior during the magnetization process was successfully explained, with simulation results aligning with dynamic cantilever magnetometry (DCM) experimental outcomes. Subsequently, the external stray field of the nanopyramid was simulated, and the stray field gradient map revealed distinct bright and dark regions corresponding to the reverse and forward saturation magnetizations of the CFO nanopyramid. This result is possible to be verified by magnetic force microscopy (MFM) measurements of individual CFO nanopyramids. The confidence in the accuracy of the simulated internal magnetization structure was significantly enhanced by independently verifying the micromagnetic simulation results through DCM and MFM experiments. Electron–phonon coupling is an important energy transfer mechanism in solids after ultrafast laser excitation. In this study, we present an extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and infrared (IR) pump-probe photoemission experiment to investigate the electron–phonon coupling in nonequilibrium gold. The energy of IR-laser-emitted photoelectrons is shifted due to the EUV photoemission and oscillates with a ∼ 4 T H z frequency. Such oscillation is considered as the effective excitation of the longitudinal acoustic phonon mode in gold through the spectral-dependent electron–phonon coupling. Our study showcases the capability of time-resolved photoemission electron microscopy to monitor the non-equilibrium lattice vibrations with ultrahigh spatial and temporal resolution. This study investigates the interface between ice and organic solvents using atomic force microscopy (AFM). Atomically flat ice surfaces were prepared and observed by AFM in 1-octanol, 1-hexanol, and 1-butanol. The results show differences in surface roughness influenced by the interaction of ice and alcohols. Young's modulus of ice was analyzed by force curve measurements, providing valuable insights into the properties of ice in liquid environments. The results showed the characteristics of the ice surface in different solvents, suggesting potential applications in understanding surface and interface phenomena associated with ice under realistic conditions. A fabrication technique for high-quality AlN templates using only metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy, which involves a tiny-pit AlN layer optimized by changing the growth temperature and V/III ratio, is proposed. Combining the tiny-pit AlN layer with the main AlN layer can be beneficial for achieving epitaxial lateral overgrowth and reducing threading dislocation density (TDD). According to transmission electron microscopy observations, the TDD in the AlN layer on the tiny-pit layer was 7.3 × 109 cm–2, and the TDD was further reduced to 2.6 × 108 cm–2 by adopting multiple tiny-pit layers. Tiny voids were observed at the interface between the tiny-pit AlN and main AlN layers, and the radius of curvature of the AlN layer also increased compared with that for a conventional AlN template by reducing stress in the AlN layer. In addition, the N-polar AlN layer was grown using Al-polar tiny-pit AlN layers through polarity inversion on a sapphire substrate with an offcut angle of 2.0°. Consequently, it was found that the Al-polar tiny-pit AlN is highly effective in improving the crystalline quality of the N-polar AlN layer. The surface flatness of the N-polar AlN layer with the tiny-pit layer and polarity inversion retained the conventional N-polar AlN template. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We tested and compared the stability and usability of three different cathode materials and configurations in a thermionic-based ultrafast electron microscope: (1) on-axis thermionic and photoemission from a custom 100 μm diameter LaB6 source with a graphite guard ring, (2) off-axis photoemission from the Ni aperture surface of the Wehnelt electrode, and (3) on-axis thermionic and photoemission from a custom 200 μm diameter polycrystalline Ta source. For each cathode type and configuration, including the Ni Wehnelt aperture, we illustrate how the photoelectron beam-current stability is deleteriously impacted by simultaneous cooling of the source following thermionic heating. Furthermore, we demonstrate usability via collection of parallel- and convergent-beam electron diffraction patterns and by formation of the optimum probe size. We find that usability of the off-axis Ni Wehnelt-aperture photoemission is at least comparable to on-axis LaB6 thermionic emission, as well as to on-axis photoemission [the heretofore conventional approach to ultrafast electron microscopy (UEM) in thermionic-based instruments]. However, the stability and achievable beam currents for off-axis photoemission from the Wehnelt aperture were superior to that of the other cathode types and configurations, regardless of the electron-emission mechanism. Beam-current stability for this configuration was found to be ±1% (one standard deviation from the mean) for 70 min (longest duration tested), and steady-state beam current was reached within the sampling-time resolution used here (∼1 s) for 15 pA beam currents (i.e., 460 electrons per packet for a 200 kHz repetition rate). Repeatability and robustness of the steady-state condition were also found to be within ±1% of the mean. We discuss the implications of these findings for UEM imaging and diffraction experiments, for pulsed-beam damage measurements, and for practical switching between optimum conventional TEM and UEM operation within the same instrument. Conductive-bridge random access memory can be used as a physical reservoir for temporal learning in reservoir computing owing to its volatile nature. Herein, a scaled Cu/HfOx/n+-Si memristor was fabricated and characterized for reservoir computing. The scaled, silicon nanofin bottom electrode formation is verified by scanning electron and transmission electron microscopy. The scaled device shows better cycle-to-cycle switching variability characteristics compared with those of large-sized cells. In addition, synaptic characteristics such as conductance changes due to pulses, paired-pulse facilitation, and excitatory postsynaptic currents are confirmed in the scaled memristor. High-pattern accuracy is demonstrated by deep neural networks applied in neuromorphic systems in conjunction with the use of the Modified National Institute of Standards and Technology database. Furthermore, a reservoir computing system is introduced with six different states attained by adjusting the amplitude of the input pulse. Finally, high-performance and efficient volatile reservoir computing in the scaled device is demonstrated by conductance control and system-level reservoir computing simulations. Structures formed by dense CO adsorption layers can provide information about the balance between molecule–surface and molecule–molecule interactions. However, in many cases, the structure models are not clear. Using density functional theory (DFT) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), we have investigated the high-coverage CO layer on the Ru(0001) surface. Previous investigations by low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) and vibrational spectroscopy led to conflicting results about the structure. In the present study, 88 models with coverages between 0.58 and 0.77 monolayers have been analyzed by DFT. The most stable structures consist of small, compact CO clusters with an internal pseudo 1 × 1 structure. The CO molecules in the cluster centers occupy on-top sites in an upright position, whereas the molecules farther outside are slightly shifted from these sites and tilted outward. STM data of the CO-saturated surface at low temperatures, corresponding to a coverage of 0.66 monolayers, show a quasi-hexagonal pattern of features with an internal hexagonal fine structure. Simulated images based on the cluster model agree with the experimental data. It is concluded that the high-coverage CO layer consists of the close-packed clusters predicted by DFT as the most stable structure elements. In the experiment, the sizes and shapes of the clusters vary. However, the arrangement is not random but follows defined tiling rules. The structure remains ordered, almost up to room temperature. In dense particle systems, the coupling of rotation and translation motion becomes intricate. Here, we report the results of confocal fluorescence microscopy where simultaneous recording of translational and rotational particle trajectories from a bidisperse colloidal dispersion is achieved by spiking the samples with rotational probe particles. The latter consist of colloidal particles containing two fluorescently labeled cores suited for tracking the particle's orientation. A comparison of the experimental data with event driven Brownian simulations gives insights into the system's structure and dynamics close to the glass transition and sheds new light onto the translation–rotation coupling. The data show that with increasing volume fractions, translational dynamics slows down drastically, whereas rotational dynamics changes very little. We find convincing agreement between simulation and experiments, even though the simulations neglect far-field hydrodynamic interactions. An additional analysis of the glass transition following mode coupling theory works well for the structural dynamics but indicates a decoupling of the diffusion of the smaller particle species. This article investigated the effects of airborne-particle abrasion and nanosilica (nano-Si) infiltration treatment on the surface characteristics of dental zirconia. A total of 15 unsintered zirconia ceramic green bodies (10 × 10 × 3 mm) were divided into three groups (n = 5): Group C, no treatment after sintering; Group S, airborne-particle abrasion with 50-µm aluminum oxide particles after sintering; and Group N, infiltration of nano-Si followed by sintering and hydrofluoric acid (HF) etching. The zirconia disks' surface roughness was analyzed by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The surface morphology of the specimens was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the chemical composition was analyzed by energy-dispersive x-ray (EDX). Data were statistically analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis test (P < .05). Zirconia surface treatments by infiltration of nano-Si, sintering, and HF etching showed multiple changes in the surface features. The surface roughness of Groups C, S, and N were 0.88 ± 0.07 µm, 1.26 ± 0.10 µm, and 1.69 ± 0.15 µm, respectively. The surface roughness of Group N was significantly higher than that of Groups C and S (P < .05). EDX analysis showed peaks that corresponded to silica (Si) after infiltration with colloidal Si that disappeared following acid etching. Infiltrating nano-Si increases the surface roughness of zirconia. The formation of retentive nanopores on the surface potentially improves the zirconia-resin cement bonding strengths. Purpose: To compare abutment screw loosening in 24-degree angulation-correcting and straight implants subjected to nonaxial cyclic loading. Materials and Methods: Seven external connection 24-degree angulation-correcting implants (AI) and seven external connection straight implants (SI) were embedded in acrylic resin within a brass housing. A hemispherical titanium fatigue abutment was secured to each implant using a titanium abutment screw tightened to 32 Ncm. Each implant-abutment complex was positioned within a tooth wear machine and subjected to 1,000,000 cycles of 50-Ncm nonaxial loading to simulate 1 year of function. The abutment screw removal torque values were measured before and after cyclic loading, and the differences were statistically analyzed using two-way ANOVA and post hoc pairwise Dunn tests. Scanning electron microscopy and finite element analyses were performed to assess the wear of the abutment screws. Results: The mean torque loss for the AI group was 21.44% (P < .001) compared to 24.56% (P < .001) for the SI group. There was a statistically significant difference between the AI and SI groups (P = .006). Conclusions: Both groups exhibited significant abutment screw loosening. A comprehensive study on the photo-excited relaxation dynamics in semiconducting perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) is pivotal in realizing their extensive potential for optoelectronics applications. Among different competing photoinduced relaxation kinetics, energy transfer and charge transfer (CT) in PQDs need special attention, as they often influence the device efficacy, particularly with the donor–acceptor hybrid architecture. In this work, we explore a detailed investigation into photoinduced CT dynamics in mixed halide undoped CsPb(Br/Cl)3 and Mn2+ doped CsPb(Br/Cl)3 PQDs with a quinone molecule, p-benzoquinone (BQ). The energy level alignment of undoped PQDs with BQ allows an efficient CT, whereas Mn2+ doping reduces the CT efficiency, experiencing a competition between energy transfer from host to dopant and CT to BQ. The conductive atomic force microscopy measurements unveil a direct correlation with the spectroscopic studies by showing a significant improvement in the conductance of undoped PQDs in the presence of BQ, while an inappreciable change is observed for doped PQDs. A much-reduced transition voltage and barrier height in the presence of BQ further validate faster CT for undoped PQD than the doped one. Furthermore, Mn2+ doping in PQDs is observed to enhance their stability, showing better air and thermal stability compared to their undoped counterparts. These results reveal that doping strategy can regulate the CT dynamics in these PQDs and increase their stability, which will be beneficial for the development of desired optoelectronic devices with long-term stability. This study explores the effect of molecular permanent dipole moment (PDM) on aggregation of guest molecules in phosphorescent host–guest organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Through a combination of photoluminescence measurements, high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy analysis, and an Ising model based physical vapor-deposition simulation, we show that higher PDM of tris[2-phenylpyridinato-C2,N]iridium(III) guest can actually lead to a reduced aggregation relative to tris[bis[2-(2-pyridinyl-N)phenyl-C] (acetylacetonato)iridium(III) when doped into a non-polar host 1,3,5-tris(carbazol-9-yl)benzene. This study further explores the effect of host polarity by using a polar host 3′,5′-di(carbazol-9-yl)-[1,1′-biphenyl]-3,5-dicarbonitrile, and it is shown that the polar host leads to reduced guest aggregation. This study provides a comprehensive understanding of the impact of molecular PDM on OLED material efficiency and stability, providing insights for optimizing phosphorescent OLED materials. Shear-force acoustic near-field microscopy (SANM) is employed to monitor stochastic formation and post dynamic response of a water meniscus that bridges a tapered gold probe (undergoing lateral oscillations of a few nanometers amplitude at constant frequency) and a flat (gold or silicon oxide) substrate. As the probe further approaches the substrate, its amplitude decreases. Shear forces (of yet unknown precise origin) are typically invoked to explain the apparently pure damping effects affecting the probe's motion. Herein, SANM measurements underscore instead the role of near-field acoustic emission from the water meniscus as an elastic energy dissipation channel involved in shear interactions. A simplified thermodynamic argument is provided to justify the formation of a water meniscus between the probe and the sample once they are at sufficient separation distance. The reported measurements focus on the role played by the tip's geometry (by using probes of slender and chubby apex termination). Alloying has been a powerful and practical strategy to widen the palette of physical properties available to semiconductor materials. Thanks to recent advances in the synthesis of van der Waals semiconductors, this strategy can be extended to monolayers (MLs) of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). Due to their extraordinary flexibility and robustness, strain is another powerful means to engineer the electronic properties of two-dimensional (2D) TMDs. In this article, we combine these two approaches in an exemplary metal dichalcogenide chalcogen-alloy, WSSe. Highly strained WSSe MLs are obtained through the formation of micro-domes filled with high-pressure hydrogen. Such structures are achieved by hydrogen-ion irradiation of the bulk material, a technique successfully employed in TMDs and h-BN. Atomic force microscopy studies of the WSSe ML domes show that the dome morphology can be reproduced in terms of the average of the elastic parameters and adhesion energy of the end compounds WSe 2 and WS 2. Micro-photoluminescence measurements of the WSSe domes demonstrate that the exceedingly high strains (ε ∼ 4 %) achieved in the domes trigger a direct-to-indirect exciton transition, similarly to WSe 2 and WS 2. N-polar InN/In0.61Al0.39N heterostructures are grown directly on sapphire by using metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. The thickness of Mg-doped In0.61Al0.39N is 340 nm, and the root-mean-square surface roughness of 20 nm thick InN is ∼3.2 nm. An optional AlN spike grown at 710 °C for 35 s is used either as an interlayer to separate the InAlN buffer from the InN channel or as a part of InAlN nucleation after sapphire nitridation. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy reveals approximately two monolayers of AlN if used as the interlayer. In this case, the concentration of screw and edge threading dislocations in partially strained InN decreased down to 6.5 × 109 and 38 × 109 cm−2, respectively. More importantly, the interlayer inclusion suppressed remote donor and alloy disorder scatterings, providing, at room temperature, the InN free electron mobility and concentration of 620 cm2/V s and 3 × 1013 cm−2, respectively. On the other hand, omitting the AlN spike by InAlN nucleation led to structural deteriorations while buffer resistivity increased to 1.7 kΩ/□. A current density of ∼12–16 A/mm, breakdown field of ∼75 kV/cm, and electron drift velocity of ∼2 × 107 cm/s were determined in InN by applying 10 ns voltage pulses on fabricated test resistors. Two-dimensional or other thin materials have high potential for use in next-generation electronic and optoelectronic devices. Recently, tellurium has gained much interest due to its broad applicability prospects. In this work, the physical properties of thin tellurium layers fabricated using two relatively simple and inexpensive technologies based on the deposition from a chemical solution and by thermal evaporation were compared. The morphology of the grown surfaces was analyzed using atomic force microscopy. The chemically deposited tellurium surface consists of nanometer-sized flakes, while polycrystalline layers are formed in the case of deposition by thermal evaporation. Additionally, the characteristics of the fabricated samples varied depending on their thickness, as observed in both Raman spectroscopy and THz spectroscopy measurements. Furthermore, the non-contact optical pump THz probe technique revealed that the layers had different carrier lifetimes and mobilities. The carrier lifetime of samples deposited by thermal evaporation is short, less than 40 ps, with mobility up to a few hundred cm2/V s. In contrast, chemically deposited samples have a longer carrier lifetime, ranging more than 500 ps, and superior mobility up to 1000 cm2/V s. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The temperature-induced phase and morphology changes of a thin layer sandwiched between two substrates which it partially wets are investigated using transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and x-ray scattering techniques. For this, SiC wafers were bonded with Si layers of various thicknesses and annealed at temperatures below and above the Si melting point. Below the melting point of Si, solid-state dewetting occurs. It starts with the heterogeneous nucleation of pits at the Si/SiC interfaces and progresses to their partial transformation into voids crossing the whole film. The further growth of voids is accompanied with an increase in the Si film thickness. Final equilibrium is shown to be impacted by Si crystallographic state evolution. Above the Si melting temperature, liquid Si drives SiC interfaces step bunching. When high steps and large terraces are formed over the two SiC surfaces, Si is shown to be trapped within quasi-closed pockets. Eventually, the interface locally closes around these Si inclusions with the creation of SiC/SiC direct contacts. Energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy and high-angle annular dark-field in a Cs-corrected scanning transmission electron microscope are employed to characterize the atomic-scale strain distribution in the active region of the InAs-based interband cascade laser. For the first time, energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy is utilized for the quantitative calculation of the zero-strain region, by which the geometric phase analysis of high-angle annular dark-field imaging has been carried out. The strain distribution of the active region with high accuracy has been obtained. The analysis of the out-of-plane strain shows that the active region in the InAs-based interband cascade laser is strain-compensated, while a certain degree of elemental intermixing still exists in the active region. This detailed strain distribution can provide valuable insights into the optimization of the growth conditions for the active region such as growth temperature, V/III flux ratio, and growth process to minimize the elemental intermixing and obtain a better performance interface while maintaining the strain-compensated state. In this study, nanostructures were introduced into bulk Si, and the P content in Si was increased. Arc melting, ball milling, and spark plasma sintering were used to prepare excess P-doped Si samples (Si1−xPx, x = 0.01, 0.03, 0.06, 0.09, and 0.12). In Si0.94P0.06, thermal conductivity decreased to 18 W m−1 K−1 at room temperature, which is about 10% of that of bulk Si. Transmission electron microscopy observation of Si0.94P0.06 revealed a linearly localized alignment, in addition to the nanostructures observed in the previous studies of P-doped Si samples. Linear alignments were composed of Si-P nanoprecipitates and defects linearly localized around dislocations. These sub-microstructures can reduce thermal conductivity; as a result, ZT at 973 K increased to 0.43, which is approximately three times higher than that of single-crystal Si. Piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) is one of the most widespread methods for investigating and visualizing ferroelectric domain structures down to the nanometer length scale. PFM makes use of the direct coupling of the piezoelectric response to the crystal lattice, and hence, it is most often applied to spatially map the three-dimensional (3D) near-surface domain distribution of any polar or ferroic sample. Nonetheless, since most samples investigated by PFM are at least semiconducting or fully insulating, the electric ac field emerging from the conductive scanning force microscopy (SFM) tip penetrates the sample and, hence, may also couple to polar features that are deeply buried into the bulk of the sample under investigation. Thus, in the work presented here, we experimentally and theoretically explore the contrast and depth resolution capabilities of PFM, by analyzing the dependence of several key parameters. These key parameters include the depth of the buried feature, i.e., here a domain wall (DW), as well as PFM-relevant technical parameters such as the tip radius, the PFM drive voltage and frequency, and the signal-to-noise ratio. The theoretical predictions are experimentally verified using x-cut periodically poled lithium niobate single crystals that are specially prepared into wedge-shaped samples, in order to allow the buried feature, here the DW, to be "positioned" at any depth into the bulk. This inspection essentially contributes to the fundamental understanding in PFM contrast analysis and to the reconstruction of 3D domain structures down to a 1 μ m-penetration depth into the sample. The interplay between orientation transition and chiral self-assemblies of para-terphenyl (P3P) molecules on the Cd(0001) surface has been investigated using low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory calculations. Three distinct molecular orientations have been discerned from the self-assembled thin films of P3P. At the low coverage, flat-lying molecules appear in the homochiral domains with the incommensurate registry to the substrate. With the coverage increasing, the incoming molecules are incorporated into the first layer with edge-on orientation and form the self-assembled zigzag chains. The alternative arrangement of zigzag chains with opposite chirality leads to the formation of a c(4 × 2) superstructure, in which the tilted molecules exhibit orientational frustration and fuzzy noises. The analysis of the tunneling spectra reveals that the electronic structure of P3P layers is contingent upon the hybridization between the electronic states of P3P molecules and the Cd(0001) surface. Domain boundaries in perovskite oxides often exhibit abundant physical properties and phenomena. Here, epitaxial LaTiO3 thin films on (100) SrTiO3 substrates are prepared by pulsed-laser deposition. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy investigations reveal that the epitaxial LaTiO3 thin films have good crystallinity but a high density of domain boundaries. Atomic-scale scanning transmission electron microscopy observations reveal that two types of domain boundaries are formed in the LaTiO3 thin films. The type I domain boundaries are formed on the {100} crystal planes, while the type II domain boundaries on the {110} crystal planes. Electron energy-loss spectroscopy analyses suggest that the valence states of Ti ions at the type I domain boundaries are +3, while those at the type II domain boundaries are +4. First-principles calculations reveal that the bandgap decreases at both domain boundaries compared to the bulk. The carrier concentration at the type I domain boundaries is significantly higher than that of the bulk, while the carrier concentration at the type II domain boundaries is lower. These findings suggest that domain boundaries play an important role in tailoring the electrical properties of the LaTiO3 thin films, thereby promoting the potential applications and property modulation of related materials and devices. Switching Spectroscopy Piezoresponse Force Microscopy (SSPFM) stands out as a powerful method for probing ferroelectric properties within materials subjected to incremental polarization induced by an external electric field. However, the dense data processing linked to this technique is a critical factor influencing the quality of obtained results. Furthermore, meticulous exploration of various artifacts, such as electrostatics, which may considerably influence the signal, is a key factor in obtaining quantitative results. In this paper, we present a global methodology for SSPFM data processing, accessible in open-source with a user-friendly Python application called PySSPFM. A ferroelectric thin film sample of potassium sodium niobate has been probed to illustrate the different aspects of our methodology. Our approach enables the reconstruction of hysteresis nano-loops by determining the PR as a function of applied electric field. These hysteresis loops are then fitted to extract characteristic parameters that serve as measures of the ferroelectric properties of the sample. Various artifact decorrelation methods are employed to enhance measurement accuracy, and additional material properties can be assessed. Performing this procedure on a grid of points across the surface of the sample enables the creation of spatial maps. Furthermore, different techniques have been proposed to facilitate post-treatment analysis, incorporating algorithms for machine learning (K-means), phase separation, and mapping cross correlation, among others. Additionally, PySSPFM enables a more in-depth investigation of the material by studying the nanomechanical properties during poling, through the measurement of the resonance properties of the cantilever–tip–sample surface system. We observed a modification of transition pathways in polarized resonance Raman spectroscopy during tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) analysis of metallic carbon nanotubes (CNTs). At a spatial resolution reaching up to the sub-nanometer regime, the signal intensity of the typical D-band is observed to be even higher than the intensity of the G-band all over the probed CNTs in TERS imaging. The measured D-band is attributed to the non-vertical transitions of electrons in k-space that are facilitated by highly confined near-field light at the tip–sample junction of our scanning tunneling microscope based TERS system. The D-band signal was observed even when the CNTs were excited by light polarized perpendicular to the tube axis that corresponds to electronic excitations between different cutting line numbers of a CNT. By combining the electron pathways brought about by both the near-field light and its polarization, we found a unique optical transition of electrons of CNTs in near-field Raman spectroscopy. The effect of carbon coating on a surface structure of a high-dose implanted/annealed silicon carbide (SiC) during annealing was examined using scanning probe microscopy (SPM), deep-ultraviolet (DUV) Raman spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In SPM, the surfaces of 500- and 30 °C-implanted/annealed SiC samples without coating exhibited a periodic-step structure and granular structure, respectively. The difference between these surfaces is attributed to the absence or presence of residual implantation damage. In contrast, surface flatness was maintained in the 500 °C-implanted/annealed SiC sample with carbon coating. However, the surface of the coated 30 °C-implanted/annealed SiC sample exhibited a geometric structure with a lattice pattern parallel to the ⟨ 11 2 ¯ 0 ⟩ axes. The DUV Raman spectra and TEM images indicated that the implanted layer of this sample metamorphosed into a mixture of 3C-SiC twin domains and amorphous-SiC regions. During the cooling process after annealing, the 3C-SiC region was more raised than the amorphous-SiC region owing to the difference in the thermal expansion coefficients, thus resulting in the generation of a geometric surface structure. Emerging quantum materials as well as novel traditional electronic and photonic materials may enable a new generation of information science devices if they can be synthesized on suitable substrates. Additionally, material and device designs may benefit from tunable properties through engineered epitaxial strain for the manipulation of the electronic character. In this work, three series of III–V ternary alloys, GaInSb, AlInSb, and InAsSb, are grown via molecular beam epitaxy on GaAs (001) substrates to explore the flexibility of abrupt metamorphic epitaxial layers with tunable lattice parameters between 6.135 and 6.479 Å. Their deposition on both homomorphic GaAs and pseudomorphic AlAs buffers is also explored. The structures of these alloys are characterized via reflection high-energy electron diffraction, high-resolution x-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy to assess their suitability as stable buffer layers with wide variability of accessible lattice parameters. We report on the magnetic coupling behavior in all-ferromagnetic La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/SrRuO3 (LSMO/SRO) heterostructures deposited on the SrTiO3 (111) substrate, where the interface leads to an enhanced exchange field as compared to the one deposited on SrTiO3 (001). Importantly, high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy reveals distinct interface structures of the (111) heterostructures depending on the growth sequence. The heterostructure with an SRO bottom layer shows an atomically flat and abrupt interface, while the one with an LSMO bottom layer shows a deformed interface due to the surface roughening of LSMO deposited directly on SrTiO3 (111). As a result, the heterostructure with an abrupt interface exhibits a robust antiferromagnetic coupling between LSMO and SRO, while the one with a rough interface shows negligible magnetic coupling. Photocatalytic water-splitting represents a promising avenue for clean hydrogen production, necessitating an in-depth understanding of the photocatalytic reaction mechanism. The majority of the photocatalytic materials need cocatalysts to enhance the photo-oxidation or reduction reactions. However, the working mechanism, such as collecting charge carriers or reducing the reaction barrier, is not clear because they disperse inhomogeneously on a surface, and it is difficult to follow the local charge carrier behavior. This study employs the pattern-illumination time-resolved phase microscopy (PI-PM) method to unravel the spatial charge carrier behavior in photocatalytic systems, utilizing time-resolved microscopic image (refractive index change) sequences and their clustering analyses. This approach is robust for studying the change in local charge carrier behavior. We studied two major cocatalyst effects on photocatalysts: TiO2 with/without Pt and hematite with/without CoPi. The PI-PM method, supported by charge type clustering and the effects of scavengers, allowed for the analysis of local activity influenced by cocatalysts. This approach revealed that the introduction of cocatalysts alters the local distribution of charge carrier behavior and significantly impacts their decay rates. In TiO2 systems, the presence of Pt cocatalysts led to a local electron site on the micron scale, extending the lifetime to a few tens of microseconds from a few microseconds. Similarly, in hematite films with CoPi, we observed a notable accumulation of holes at cocatalyst sites, emphasizing the role of cocatalysts in enhancing photocatalytic efficiency. The interaction between ammonia (NH3) and (alumino)silicates is of fundamental and applied importance, yet the specifics of NH3 adsorption on silicate surfaces remain largely unexplored, mainly because of experimental challenges related to their electrically insulating nature. An example of this knowledge gap is evident in the context of ice nucleation on silicate dust, wherein the role of NH3 for ice nucleation remains debated. This study explores the fundamentals of the interaction between NH3 and microcline feldspar (KAlSi3O8), a common aluminosilicate with outstanding ice nucleation abilities. Atomically resolved non-contact atomic force microscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and density functional theory-based calculations elucidate the adsorption geometry of NH3 on the lowest-energy surface of microcline, the (001) facet, and its interplay with surface hydroxyls and molecular water. NH3 and H2O are found to adsorb molecularly in the same adsorption sites, creating H-bonds with the proximate surface silanol (Si–OH) and aluminol (Al–OH) groups. Despite the closely matched adsorption energies of the two molecules, NH3 readily yields to replacement by H2O, challenging the notion that ice nucleation on microcline proceeds via the creation of an ordered H2O layer atop pre-adsorbed NH3 molecules. MnO(001) thin films were grown on commercial MgO(001) substrates at 520 °C by reactive molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) using Mn vapor and O2-seeded supersonic molecular beams (SMBs) both with and without radio frequency (RF) plasma excitation. For comparison, MnO(001) films were grown by reactive MBE using O2 from a leak valve. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed the Mn2+ oxidation state and 10%–15% excess oxygen near the growth surface. Reflection high-energy electron diffraction and x-ray diffraction evidenced that the films were rock salt cubic MnO with very strong (001) orientation. High-angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy with energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy demonstrated abrupt MnO/MgO interfaces and indicated [(001)MnO||(001)MgO] epitaxial growth. Ex situ atomic force microscopy of films deposited without RF excitation revealed smooth growth surfaces. An SMB-grown MnO(001) film was converted to Mn3O4 with strong (110) orientation by post-growth exposure to an RF-discharge (RFD) SMB source providing O atoms; the surface of the resultant film contained elongated pits aligned with the MgO 110 directions. In contrast, using the RFD-SMB source for growth resulted in MnO(001) films with elongated growth pits and square pyramidal hillocks aligned along the MgO 110 and 100 directions, respectively. The current focus in Autonomous Experimentation (AE) is on developing robust workflows to conduct the AE effectively. This entails the need for well-defined approaches to guide the AE process, including strategies for hyperparameter tuning and high-level human interventions within the workflow loop. This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the influence of initial experimental conditions and in-loop interventions on the learning dynamics of Deep Kernel Learning (DKL) within the realm of AE in scanning probe microscopy. We explore the concept of the "seed effect," where the initial experiment setup has a substantial impact on the subsequent learning trajectory. Additionally, we introduce an approach of the seed point interventions in AE allowing the operator to influence the exploration process. Using a dataset from Piezoresponse Force Microscopy on PbTiO3 thin films, we illustrate the impact of the "seed effect" and in-loop seed interventions on the effectiveness of DKL in predicting material properties. The study highlights the importance of initial choices and adaptive interventions in optimizing learning rates and enhancing the efficiency of automated material characterization. High tilt angle (45 °) ferroelectric liquid crystal (F L C) in surface stabilized geometry, having no chiral smectic A (S m A ∗) phase, has been studied for the reorientation of the smectic layers near the transition temperature (T c). The electro-optical studies have shown the stripe domain formation in which the liquid crystal molecules are aligned along the rubbing direction, but the smectic layers are tilted away from the rubbing direction at room temperature. In such high tilt angle F L C s , the molecular alignment and smectic layer formation start from bottom and top rubbed grooves at T c. The domain formation of the FLC takes place in the middle of the top and bottom surfaces due to the frustration of the dipolar interaction. The smectic layer switching is observed by optical microscopy and confirmed by the dielectric spectroscopy method near T c of S m C ∗ and chiral nematic phases. Domain switching has shown a larger switching angle than the molecular tilt angle within the smectic layer. These studies are expected to be significant for understanding the smectic layer structure and the domain switching process, which may pave the way for large optical switching devices. In this paper, we have studied the effect on the structure and magnetic properties of partial Pd substitution by Gd in Fe–Pd thin films of nominal composition Fe56Pd44−xGdx (x = 1, 3, 5, and 7), deposited onto Si(100) and Si(100)/SiO2 substrates by thermal evaporation. Several techniques contribute to the characterization of their microstructure and magnetic properties, such as x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy, alternating gradient field magnetometry, and magnetic force microscopy (MFM). X-ray diffraction shows that the as-deposited films are either amorphous or contain a disordered FePd phase, depending on the film thickness. The transformation of disordered fcc-FePd into ordered fct-FePd has been induced by a heat treatment at 530 °C for 4 h. The addition of gadolinium leads to a reduction in the coercivity as a consequence of the emergence of soft phases and of the progressive reduction of the fct-FePd phase, which is primarily responsible for the observed maze magnetic domains. The exchange coupling between the soft phase and the hard fct-FePd phase is demonstrated by first-order reversal curves (FORCs). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
