Currently, local history in Kazakhstan is in the stage of intensive development. But the time has already come to study the experience in conducting and organizing this work, summing up and analyzing the accumulated new knowledge. In this vein, the research project "Seven Wonders of the Podgor'e " is an advanced one in the study of the territory of the microdistrict of the Podgor'e of the city of Petropavlovsk of the North Kazakhstan region. The main actual purpose of the research is the formation of moral, patriotic and civic qualities of a person, fostering a sense of responsibility for the motherland, familiarizing students with the historical past and present of their native land. The article analyzes the international experience of the participation of secondary school teachers in the education of citizenship and patriotism of the future generation through regular, extracurricular and research activities. This research project is devoted to a comprehensive study of the historical subdistrict of the city of Petropavlovsk. For a more detailed analysis, all the information is divided into seven areas, which are presented in the form of separate research projects. Each thematic block includes a large volume of local history material, archival data, contains video clips, interactive educational games, panoramic shots, interviews. The practical part of the research is the creation of a tourist excursion, as well as its virtual version. The wave of labor unrest that accompanied Belarusian post-election protests had no precedents in the country's independent history or recent post-Soviet political protest mobilizations. These protests challenge the prevalent trend in the current literature on the post-Soviet working class to stress its weakness in terms of organization, as well as structural and material resources. This article relies on a database of workplace-related protest events (August 10–September 30) and a selection of statements, interviews, and social media discussions among participants of the protests, in order to explain this unexpected activation of the seemingly passive Belarusian working class. The author hypothesizes that it was the vagueness of the Belarusian opposition's ideology and workers' participation in the broader protest movement that helped them overcome the challenges of suppressed voice, bureaucratic despotism, and atomization. These mobilizing factors, however, limit the further development of autonomous labor organizations and their democratizing impact. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This essay presents a brief description of about five hundred letters taken from Luisa d’Azeglio Blondel’s correspondence, collected by the author. After briefly illustrating the process of searching for this material, sourced from the known collections in Milan, Livorno and Forlì, as well as from private collections found at some of the Blondel’s heirs and various correspondents, the author presents a short biography of the wife of Massimo d’Azeglio. Purpose – This paper aims to, invariably, critically look at primary records, their origins, categorization, uses and what the future holds for them, amid changing times. From the cradle of civilization, people have been using varied ways to record, store and distribute information. Years back, people kept their records on such materials as wax, papyrus, leather, clay, parchment, paper and wood. But recent technological developments have brought about different formats which in turn have influenced the choice of materials and methods used to write and circulate information. Design/methodology/approach – This is a viewpoint paper on primary documents in library and information service institutions. The paper critically looks at the different types of primary documents, how they are collected, the challenges involved and their future amid changing technological times. Relevant literature was consulted, including the Internet. Findings – The findings are that the future of primary documents will remain bleak if librarians, curators, records managers and archivists do not give serious thought to primary documents regardless of the fact that they are germane in library and information science. The article focuses on tradition of English manuscript and presents English text of the "Three Fridays" and "Twelve Fridays." Topics discussed include division of English material into "a list of Fridays" and "a list of events" groups labelled as "Three Fridays" and "Twelve Fridays," events of biblical history, and text of "Twelve Fridays" which involves five manuscripts containing calendrical and astronomical materials.

In collaboration with students and faculty, the Library of Architecture, Design and Construction at Auburn University developed an interdisciplinary Materials Laboratory that offers students in the College of Architecture, Design and Construction a hands-on and interdisciplinary sensory experience of building and construction materials. Materials research is a key component to students' learning in design disciplines, and the tactile and visual experience of handling physical building materials samples allows students to investigate and discover materials in new ways. The article focuses on example of the ways in which teachers can integrate digital history material in the classroom to teach first and second order historical concepts. Topics discussed include information on time used in the history which refers to both dates and periods in history; misconception of students regarding historians; and information on empathy which refers to an understanding that people in the past did not all share our worldview.

Considering bibliographic heritage as indispensable for the knowledge of our culture and history, we show the results of the research project "Situation of the heritage library collections of three public libraries of Antioquia, Colombia". This research aimed to establish the role of public libraries in relation to local collections and bibliographic heritage. Aspects discussed include the design of criteria for the assessment and recovery of these collections and the suggestion of a diagnostic process to be followed. Our inventory produced two outcomes: 1) the creation of a digital reference repository that helps to systematize and disseminate the heritage collections existing in public libraries; and 2) evidence of how these collections lack needed policies for recovery, identification, processing, preservation and dissemination, which results in difficulties in terms of their valuation as heritage collections. In the 1950s and 1960s, white National Party (NP) and Afrikaner Broederbond (AB) ideologues and functionaries, who came to power in 1948, recast and realigned South African museums, to strengthen the ideological underpinning of Apartheid. Investigation of an extensive range of documentary sources housed in South African archives has led to the suggestion that the splitting of the South African Museum (SAM) in Cape Town, which led to the creation of the South African Cultural History Museum (SACHM), formed part of this process. The paper shows that (i) NP and AB ideologues increasingly dominated the SAM Board during the 1950s and early 1960s and (ii) their aspirations changed from the display of cultural history material, within the auspices of the SAM, into the establishment a fully-fledged independent SACHM committed to the presentation and housing of white South African and European material and history. The article reports on a workshop for librarians involved in a research and documentation project aimed at appraising and cataloging the holdings of historic libraries in the monasteries, castles, and palaces of South Tyrol, Italy, held on September 14, 2012, in the Marienberg Abbey in Burgeis, Italy. Topics of discussion included the RAK-WB and RAK-Alte Drucke cataloging rules and standards, the rare books collections of the Ferdinandeum museum in Innsbruck, Austria, and the Capuchin monks in the region.

This paper deals with the cultural, historical and local values of minor publications of the City Museum of Vukovar, revealing their information, communication and promotion roles which they performed at the time when other media were scarce. Assuming that these minor publications are important historical sources, constituting a significant part of the local heritage, we propose three ways of presenting these materials to the wider social and scientific community: organizing thematic exhibitions, compiling bibliographies, and building digital collections. For the purpose of this paper the most interesting and representative pieces have been selected, those that best illustrate the great documentary value of this sort of materials and their significance as an integral part of the local heritage of the city of Vukovar and the surrounding area. More than twenty years after the collapse of the totalitarian regime in Albania, the archives of the state security apparatus (Sigurimi) have yet to be opened. The horror of the Hoxha regime remains under lock and key. Not one word is lost on the network of political prisons and the state security apparatus in the history schoolbooks; in today's only history text about Albania written by a university scholar, that addresses some details of the socialist period, this part of the socialist past is also left out. The lack of initiative from the government or any other state organisation to address this situation has led to setting up a number of alternative civil society organisations that focus on this issue. One of these is a very important movement in northern Albania, having at its core a disparate but vibrant publishing industry that provides space for the local actors to publish their memories and experiences. Two genres of writing can be identified here: local histories and family histories. Common to both are motifs of local patriotism and personal sacrifice, but the local histories - mainly of specific villages and towns - tend to be apologetic of the regime while the family histories tend more often to be those of victims and opponents of the regime. The author presents a personal narrative of her experiences as a museum director dealing with topics including preservation and access towards local history, and stewardship and ownership of the small museums.

Historical records are an important resource for understanding the biological impacts of climate change. Such records include naturalists' journals, club and field station records, museum specimens, photographs, and scientific research. Finding records and overcoming their limitations are serious challenges to climate change research. In the present article, we describe efforts to locate data from Concord, Massachusetts, and provide a template that can be replicated in other locations. Analyses of diverse data sources, including observations made in the 1850s by Henry David Thoreau, indicate that climate change is affecting the phenology, presence, and abundance of species in Concord. Despite recent work on historical records, many sources of historical data are underutilized. Analyses of these data may provide insights into climate change impacts and techniques to manage them. The Maitland local studies strategy was developed as a result of a city wide strategic review undertaken by Maitland City Library which highlighted the importance of fostering management of Maitland's local history and heritage resources. The strategy sustains recognition of Maitland's history and cultural heritage through promotion of networks, development of standards, support of local heritage organisations and promotion of heritage education. This paper provides an overview of strategy development and outcomes, with a focus on how public libraries can position themselves beyond the role of repository and into community leadership. The article describes the long-term project called the chain guiding, which takes place at the castle Vrchotovy Janovice. It connects the museum and school. The project is intended for teenagers, who after a short preparation to become a wizard castle. The route quite demanding tour exhibitions of the castle is divided into a number of stops. The cataloguing device known in the middle ages as the secundo folio, being the opening words of the second leaf of a book, was a means by which a medieval book could be matched to its record in a list. First used in the early thirteenth century, it came to be universally employed in England and elsewhere, and continued to be used until the early sixteenth century, for printed books as well as for manuscripts without discrimination. While the secundo folio has long had a meaning and usefulness to modern manuscript cataloguers, for whom it has been a means of matching a surviving book to its medieval institutional home, its usefulness has escaped the attention of incunabulists. While it is true that the diagnostic cannot be used to identify an individual printed book as it can an individual manuscript, it can be used to identify the edition (or editions), and thereby offers a new source of evidence for the acquisition and ownership of incunabula at an early date, making a contribution to studies on the development and reach of the early booktrade. Topics discussed include the impact of the archive's publication, its relevance for historians, and its role beyond scholarly applications.

The article describes the proceeding of the First Symposium of the Edmonton Branch of the Progressive Librarians Guild that was held in Edmonton, Alberta on October 1, 2011. Topics include archiving oral histories of Canadian First Nations peoples, attempts at making libraries an inclusive environment, and creating a taxonomy to correlate library and information science projects to social justice issues.

A digital revolution, it has been claimed, has transformed records management and archival practice, and raised the fear that the inability to capture information created via new media is leading to a significant loss in information secured for the future. In its own day, the invention and adoption of the telephone revolutionised long-distance communications, shifting many transactions to an oral medium which left little in the way of records.
