Adopting the interdisciplinary approach of historiography, gender history and book history, the essay sheds new light on the gendered nature of historical authorship in the late-Victorian era. By analysing how historians used such paratexts as title pages, dedications and prefaces for self-fashioning, the aim is to illustrate how paratexts contributed to the gendered idea of historical authority. As men decorated title pages with academic degrees and appointments, their title pages became symbols of scholarly excellence, strengthening the idea of history as a male preserve. Thus, it is necessary to ask how women, largely excluded from such formal qualifications, used paratexts for presenting themselves as authoritative historians. By examining the paratexts of Kate Norgate, Mary Hickson and Alice Gardner, the essay demonstrates that women borrowed authority from renowned male historians to sanction their scholarly competence. Consequently, this practise strengthened the gendered image of scholarly authority since the dedications and prefatorial acknowledgments guided reviewers to measure women historians against the male authorities enlisted in the paratexts. Thus, it is argued here that the paradox was that as women's engagement in historical research expanded, they were nonetheless submitted to the very male authority that their paratexts established. In March 2016, Fiamē Naomi Mata'afa was the first woman appointed to the position of deputy prime minister of Sāmoa. Following in the tradition of Pacific Islands Portraits, we provide a short life history of Fiamē, including her lineage, education and political career. Drawing on a mixture of oral history interviews and newspapers, we explore key themes central to Pacific politics, including gender, but also, title, political parties, the role of the international community, and modernization. Our contribution is significant because while the region has a rich tradition of life history writing, the main subjects of this literature are Melanesian men. This article explores eighteenth-century elite and middling women's representations of Elizabeth I and Mary queen of Scots through manuscript-making and collecting as the means to confirm or critique their own social and domestic relationships. Scrutinising such practices, this article unpacks women's modes of engagement in British history and the opportunities for creative reimaginings of the gendered, moral, and national identities these posed. It asserts that, in representing the combative tension between the historical figures of Elizabeth I and Mary queen of Scots, eighteenth-century women turned instead to models of collaboration to create and record their own histories, reflecting not only the lives of earlier women, but their own domestic and social situations. For decades, the study of early modern women has been predicated on the assumption that patriarchy was a powerful force in early modern society, subsuming women’s interests to those of men and repressing women’s opportunities and thoughts to such a degree that most if not all women had to struggle to find personal satisfaction and be recognised for individual achievement. However, for more than forty years, the research by scholars of early modern women has vividly demonstrated that large numbers of women, both as individuals and in groups, successfully resisted patriarchal expectations and institutions. In this article, I argue that although patriarchy existed in early modern society, an examination of the scholarship in the aggregate indicates that we can no longer assume that it was the dominant or sole set of gender expectations. Early modern patriarchy was weak and easily challenged by everyone from peasant women to queens, suggesting that many people (both women and men) expressed an agentic set of gender norms that valued and expected women’s political, economic and intellectual activity. This is, as the subtitle indicates, a joint paper in two voices. Each author has worked with her counterpart to revise what began as their position paper for the Round Table ‘Women’s History at the Cutting Edge’ at the International Congress for the Historical Sciences, held in August 2015 in Jinan, China, which met jointly with the International Federation for Research in Women's History (IFRWH). Chen Yan explains her perplexity about the reticence of Chinese historians (based in China) to embrace topics in women's and gender history, using her own case as an example. She then poses five questions in the paper to stimulate reflections from the commentators, drawing on their varied experiences as historians of women and gender in other countries. Her particular objective is to ‘jump-start’ research and publication in these areas in China, where a variety of obstacles dissuade scholars from pursuing this path. Karen Offen’s contribution builds out from that of Chen Yan, arguing that women's and gender history is at the cutting edge of historical research precisely because it offers ‘a revolutionary development in the politics of historical knowledge’. No historian can be considered ‘up-to-date’ in the field of history without taking its findings into account. Offen addresses each of the five questions, making provocative arguments and rehearsing some of the achievements in providing an organizational structure that welcomes historians from many lands through the IFRWH. She emphasizes the vast expansion of publications in the field during the last twenty-some years in many languages besides English and addresses the controversies of the 1990s concerning the ‘turn’ to gender history and to theoretical analyses. Offen then proposes thinking about ‘women’ and ‘gender’ as two focal points along the continuum of the same project, using the analogy of the ‘zoom lens’. Making women's history an integral part of historical study requires a ‘gendered analysis’ of any historical topic, but it also requires deeper thinking about communication strategies that can bring the findings of our research to the general public. This essay explains first how women's history developed in Japan, referencing early research on the topic. Then, it will discuss the arguments about the shift from women's history to gender history, the necessity of which has been loudly insisted on since the middle of the 1990s. Third, it will explain the organizational development as observed in the establishment of the Gender History Association of Japan in which I myself participated and served as the second president from 2008 to 2010. The fourth point considered in the essay is the realignment of the Science Council of Japan to include more women and the resultant efforts on the part of practitioners of women's/gender history to change history textbooks for high school students to accommodate gendered viewpoints. Our contribution will focus on some of the intellectual developments occurring in gender history/women’s history in Canada in the twenty-first century, while also drawing attention to the decline of women’s history outside of the university environment. In the mid-1990s there was a vigorous debate over the merits of gender history vs. women’s history. Over the past decade, these debates have quieted along with a growing recognition that gender history and women’s history have many common goals. Today, biography and recent history (post 1945) figure among the strong trends in Canadian women’s and gender historiography. But the impact of government funding cuts under the previous decade-long Conservative government has seriously handicapped federal institutions such as museums and archives. The paper addresses the pressing question of why, in Russia, gender studies in history still have to prove their worth in the Russian academic world — and in the general public; why they operate in two discourses, and how common ground can be found between these. The first discourse is that of traditional gender roles which tends to legitimize the role of a woman as important but complementary with regard to the role of a man. The second discourse casts serious doubt on the naturalness or the essentialist predicament of the mutual complementarity of gender roles. This article offers an overview of the development of women's history in the UK over the last twenty years or so. It is noted that over this period women's history has expanded massively, an expansion that has cut across national boundaries and drawn in scholars from other disciplines than History. Eight themes in women's history are identified as being prominent during this time—a focus on the modern period (post 1780), a strong empirical bent, a questioning of the dominance of a separate spheres discourse, a ‘spatial turn', an interest in life stories and biographies, an interest in the women's suffrage movement, a ‘religious turn’ and a ‘transnational turn’. The Italian women’s movement of the 1970s was one of the largest and most diverse in Europe. However, after the movement's decline in the late 1970s, scholarly interest in women studies and in the history of second-wave feminism has primarily been upheld through the creation and promotion of women's archives, documentary centres and libraries. More recently, new generations of women have engaged in battles for women's rights, debates about gender issues and feminist scholarship, relying increasingly on new media technologies and social media. It is tempting to conclude that the generation gap that so often marks the relationship between different feminist generations is enhanced by such a technological divide. This article, instead, challenges this assumption by studying the case of an information-based organization that was created in the early 1980s by a group of local feminists in the Italian city of Bologna, and which adopted a strongly digital approach to historical scholarship in the early 1990s. What is the impact of a similar, digital approach to women's history on the nature of historical scholarship and the shape of the archive? The article tackles various issues related to women's and gender history as of March 2016. These issues include a forum on the relationship between communism and feminism which was published in the first volume of the journal, the work of sociologist Maxine Molyneux on state socialist women's organizations during the Cold War, and the changes in socialist women's organizing in Poland from the 1940s to the 1980s.

In the Middle Ages, elite women acted as creators, donors and recipients of textile art. This article analyses a small but representative group of seventh- to thirteenth-century embroideries in order to examine the motivation for their creation and to investigate the ways in which women could mark their own presence through textile art. It discusses written sources alongside the material evidence; these sources include documentary, hagiographical and literary texts, which provide information about cultural norms and the expectations of society. Set within the context of these sources, the evidence suggests that society both channelled women's creativity into textile art and idealised it. At the same time, as artists and patrons of ornamented textiles, noblewomen had creative control over the medium; embroidery became a field in which their works were noted and celebrated. This short introduction reflects upon the relatively improved representation of women in sports history and its historiography. It highlights the similar challenges faced by those researching women in sport and those researching women's history more generally. In addition to identifying the need for more empirical research around female participation in ‘sport’, it notes the importance of moving beyond this conceptual territory to physical culture. This article explores the political and gendered representations of Georges Loustaunau-Lacau and Marie-Madeleine Méric (later Fourcade), leaders of a French Resistance network during the Second World War. Both leaders came from the extreme-right and their commitment to the Resistance was questioned both during and after the war by critics who could not reconcile their rightist politics with the nature of resistance to the German occupation. Méric’s role as a female Resistance leader, moreover, was also highlighted in wartime reports and not always positively. In the postwar period, the representations of both resisters changed alongside the changing narrative about the French Resistance more generally. Loustaunau-Lacau continued to be a target for politically motivated accusations that questioned his Resistance record right up until his death, as he did not fit into the dominant Gaullist narrative. While Méric’s political capital improved, thanks to her conversion to Gaullism, she gets nudged out of many histories because of the exceptional nature of her role in the Resistance as a woman. This article suggests ways in which we might further explore the topic of Resistance, particularly when it was undertaken by people who have not fit comfortably in the existing narratives. The article discusses the historiography of American Jewish women. It references the article "Immigrant Women and Consumer Protest: The New York City Kosher Meat Boycott of 1902" by Paula Hyman, which appeared in a 1980 issue of the journal "American Jewish History". According to the author, Hyman's article was responsible for introducing Jewish women's history to the mainstream of American history. Hyman's feminist politics and the development of the paper are discussed.

The historiography of games among First Nations women still is in its infancy. Yet Indian women had access to a wide range of recreational activities that were deeply rooted in each stage of their lives and more especially in all that was ceremonial, ritual, magical and religious. This paper proposes a synthesis of the history and cultural anthropology of these practices in the American Indian history of pre- and post-Columbian North America, through to the end of the Indian Wars in the 1890s. It explores how a gendered approach allows renewed analysis of the contact between traditional American Indian games and modern sports and examines the impact of sporting acculturation on these activities at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The case of the Fort Shaw ‘Blues’ is used to explore the complex relationship that American and native cultures hold with modern women's sports. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The June 1936 flogging of Willie Sue Blagden, a middle-class white woman, by anti-union planters elicited public sympathy and political support for the Southern Tenant Farmers Union (STFU). Nevertheless, Blagden herself has been treated dismissively in the scholarly literature on the STFU. Drawn to the flogging story as a story, the author uncovered evidence that other historians have overlooked. This article presents a more accurate picture of Blagden to illustrate how historians' desire to write creatively and accessibly can lead to better, and not simply more entertaining, scholarship. Women historiography has been one of the major concerns of the feminist movement particularly since 1960s. Looking at the figure of the courtesan in India--its histories, representations, repression and re-emergence, the paper seeks to problematize discourses of both Universalist and minority history writing that have been built around these women. In the context of Post-Colonial theory, and in the light of the dynamic nature of the categories of Truth, Power, Knowledge, and Discourse, the paper seeks to salvage Foucault's methodology of writing a genealogical history as opening new avenues within the history of the courtesan in India in particular and women's history writing in general. Prevailing historiographies often represent Chamorro women as bearers of culture and language. These prove limited, as they do not delve into the nuances and complexities that led to the transformation of female Chamorro identities. This essay brings to the fore an intergenerational perspective of the language and literacy trajectories of three generations of women on Guam. Present day Chamorro women are brought into the fold of exploring the nuances of female Chamorro identities. Drawing from ethnographic methodology, this work traces the language and literacy attitudes, perceptions, and practices of these women. The work further deliberates how these women appropriate language and the findings offer a portrait of how Chamorro and English language and literacy speak to the broader issues in Guam's colonial history during the latter half of the 20th century. The article discusses the activism of the 19th century abolitionist Laura Smith Haviland from a historiographical perspective. An overview of Haviland's efforts in assisting fugitive slaves, including in regard to the rewards for her capture and the threats that she received for helping African American runaway slaves in Michigan, is provided.

This article utilizes qualitative methods to explore changes in women's representation in a specific historical topic: World War II narratives. On one hand, war discourse is fundamental to the historical understanding of politics in many parts of the world. Furthermore, since the time World War II narratives first appeared in school textbooks, women's status has significantly increased around the world and in the United States. As a result, these narratives provide an interesting case to examine historical and enduring gender roles and power structures. Using a collection of twelve U. S. history secondary school textbooks published between the years 1956 and 2007 and used in California's public schools, we employ a modified version of Mary Kay Thompson Tetreault's (1986) five stages of thinking about women's history as our coding scheme. Our findings reveal not only greater mentions of women in newer textbooks, but also a greater use of compensatory and "bi-focal" narratives. However, we argue that these more recent texts still fall far short of adopting multifocal, relational narratives that challenge hegemonic gender relations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
