Abstract

The article discusses the activism of the 19th century abolitionist Laura Smith Haviland from a historiographical perspective. An overview of Haviland's efforts in assisting fugitive slaves, including in regard to the rewards for her capture and the threats that she received for helping African American runaway slaves in Michigan, is provided.
