Visitations in the Salzburg Part of Carinthia, 1614– 1616. A Retrospective View The Protocols of the visitation to the Salzburg-owned part of Carinthia from the beginning of the 17th century provide a good, albeit selective, insight into cultural conditions, applicable legal forms, and the composition and interaction of certain population groups. The main intention of the visitation was to secure the existence of the church in economic, legal and above all pastoral terms. This marked an early and decisive demarcation from Protestantism which was not directly combated. Rather, differentiating characteristics were more pronounced and a new beginning was set. This primarily affected the clergy and the religious formation of young people. The instrument of visitation made it clear: „There is someone who looks very closely, records everything and forgets nothing." This was probably one of the secrets of its success.
