We performed a series of molecular dynamics simulations on monodisperse polymer melts to investigate the formation of shear banding. Under high shear rates, shear banding occurs, which is intimately accompanied by the entanglement heterogeneity. Interestingly, the same linear relationship between the end-to-end distance Ree and entanglement density Z is observed at homogeneous flow before the onset of shear banding and at the shear banding state, where Ree ∼ ln ( W i 0.87 ) − ξ 0 Z is proposed as the criterion to describe the dynamic force balance of the molecular chain in flow with a high rate. Deviating from this relation leads to a force imbalance and results in the emergence of shear banding. We establish a scaling relation between the disentanglement rate Vd and the Weissenberg number Wi as V d ∼ W i 0.87 for stable flow in homogeneous shear and shear banding states. The formation of shear banding prevents chains from further stretching and disentanglement. When a contact line (CL)—where a liquid–vapor interface meets a substrate—is put into motion, it is well known that the contact angle differs between advancing and receding CLs. Using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations, we reveal another intriguing distinction between advancing and receding CLs: while temperature increases at an advancing CL—as expected from viscous dissipation, we show that temperature can drop at a receding CL. Detailed quantitative analysis based on the macroscopic energy balance around the dynamic CL showed that the internal energy change of the fluid due to the change of the potential field along the pathline out of the solid–liquid interface induced a remarkable temperature drop around the receding CL, in a manner similar to latent heat upon phase changes. This result provides new insights for modeling the dynamic CL, and the framework for heat transport analysis introduced here can be applied to a wide range of nanofluidic systems. Background: Individuals with visual impairment have balance deficits; therefore, this systematic review aimed to provide comprehensive insights into the balance control of individuals with visual impairments when compared with individuals with full vision. Methods: Primary sources were obtained from eight databases including PubMed. LILACS, Science Direct, SCOPUS, CINAHL. PEDro, CENTRAL. and Web of Science. The search period covered years from inception to January 10, 2022. Results: A total of 20 studies with 29 trials with 1,280 participants were included in the systematic review. The results showed that individuals with sight had better static and dynamic balance than individuals with visual impairment (p = .001). However, individuals with visual impairment had significantly better static balance with visual perturbation and stronger static balance with visual and proprioception perturbation (p = .001). Furthermore. individuals with sight had better balance control than individuals with visual impairment who participated in sports (p = .001). Finally, individuals with visual impairment who participated in sports had better balance control than sedentary people with visual impairment (p = .001). Conclusion: individuals with visual impairment have defects in both dynamic and static balance when compared to individuals with sight. In addition. balance improved with increasing age in individuals with visual impairment while balance control was dependent on the proprioception and vestibular systems. Also, individuals with sight had better balance than individuals with visual impairment who participated in sports and individuals with visual impairment who participated in sports compared with sedentary people with visual impairment. ABSTRACT Modeling of the production of nitrogen oxide molecules in DC discharges in laminar longitudinal flows of atmospheric‐pressure air is performed. Two‐dimensional nonequilibrium discharge model includes the system of gas dynamic equations and balance equations for various plasma components. Simulations are performed for the discharge currents 50–600 mA and gas flow velocities 1–10 m/s. In considered conditions, the gas temperature in the discharge core varies in the range of 3000–6000 K. Spatial profiles of the densities and fluxes of produced species are obtained, both inside the discharge and in the afterglow region. The energy cost for the production of nitrogen oxides is calculated, depending on the discharge current, gap length, and gas flow velocity. Purpose Methods Results Conclusion Level of evidence Virtual reality‐based therapy (VRBT) may be an effective physical therapy complement employed in the rehabilitation of patients with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of VRBT in improving pain, knee function, strength, proprioception, flexion range of motion (ROM), and dynamic balance after ACL injury.We conducted this systematic review with meta‐analysis following PRISMA criteria. Since inception to June 2024, we searched in PubMed Medline, WOS, SCOPUS, CINAHL and PEDro without publication date and language restrictions. Randomised controlled trials (RCTs), comprising only patients with ACL injury, that assess the effectiveness of VRBT compared to classical interventions on the outcomes of interest were included. PEDro scale was employed to analyze the methodological quality of the RCTs included. Cohen's standardised mean difference (SMD) and its 95% confidence interval (95% CI) was used to calculate the pooled effect in meta‐analyses.Nine RCTs, providing data from 330 participants (26.96 ± 3.11 years, 85% males) were included. The RCTs included showed good methodological quality (PEDro scale = 6.88 points), being, performance and detection biases, the most common biases reported. Meta‐analyses showed that VRBT was more effective than classical interventions in reducing pain (SMD = −1.15; 95% CI −1.85 to −0.45; p = 0.001; I2 = 0%), and increasing knee function (SMD = 1.71; 95% CI 0.93 to 2.5; p < 0.001; I2 = 0%), strength (SMD = 0.82; 95% CI 0.4–1.23; p < 0.001; I2 = 0%) and flexion ROM (SMD = 0.7; 95% CI 0.37–1.01; p < 0.001; I2 = 0%). Additionally, VRBT improved postero‐medial (SMD = 0.46; 95% CI 0.01–0.9; p = 0.045; I2 = 15.1%) and postero‐lateral CoP excursion (SMD = 0.75; 95% CI 0.3–1.21; p = 0.001; I2 = 0%), being effective in improving dynamic balance.VRBT is an effective physical therapy complement to be included in the ACL's rehabilitation programmes due to reduces pain and increases knee function, strength, ROM and dynamic balance after ACL injury.Level II evidence. The purpose of this study was to determine the extent of differences in the level of change in linear speed and velocity in the modified change of direction test (COD) and to determine the relationship between speed deficits resulting from changes of direction and functional performance between groups of Polish U19 Volleyball National Team and Polish Women's Basketball 3 × 3 National Team. A total of 23 athletes: 12 volleyball players (age: 18 ± 0 years; body height: 183 ± 7 cm; body weight: 70 ± 8 kg) and 11 basketball players (age: 26 ± 4 years; body height: 180 ± 6 cm; body weight: 73 ± 10 kg) participated in the study. Athletes were tested for the following measures: Functional Movement Screen test (FMS), dynamic balance test Y-Balance, joints range of motion measurements, maximal sprint test (14 m), modified COD test (14 m) and change of direction deficit (CODD). A value of p < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. There was no significant correlation between sprint and CODD results in basketball team. In volleyball team there was a positive and significant correlation between COD, sprint and CODD. There was a negative and significant correlation between Y-Balance scores and sprint test results in the basketball team. Basketball team had a positive significant correlation between hip rotations and COD results. SUMMARY The dynamic balance between the self‐renewal and differentiation of stem cells in plants is precisely regulated by a series of developmental regulated genes that exhibit spatiotemporal‐specific expression patterns. Several studies have demonstrated that the WOX family transcription factors play critical roles in maintaining the identity of stem cells in Arabidopsis thaliana. In this study, we obtained amiR‐WOX9 transgenic plants, which displayed terminating prematurely of shoot apical meristem (SAM) development, along with alterations in inflorescence meristem and flower development. The phenotype of amiR‐WOX9 plants exhibited similarities to that of wus‐101 mutant, characterized by a stop‐and‐go growth pattern. It was also found that the expression of WUS in amiR‐WOX9 lines was decreased significantly, while in UBQ10::WOX9‐GFP transgenic plants, the WUS expression was increased significantly despite no substantial alteration in meristem size compared to Col. Therefore, these data substantiated the indispensable role of WOX9 in maintaining the proper expression of WUS. Further investigations unveiled the direct binding of WOX9 to the WUS promoter via the TAAT motif, thereby activating its expression. It was also found that WUS recognized identical the same TAAT motif cis‐elements in its own promoter, thereby repress self‐expression. Next, we successfully identified a physical interaction between WOX9 and WUS, and verified that it was harmful to the expression of WUS. Finally, our experimental findings demonstrate that WOX9 was responsible for the direct activating of WUS, which however was interfered by the ways of WUS binding its own promoter and the interaction of WUS and WOX9, thereby ensuring the appropriate expression pattern of WUS and then the stem cell stability. Double-leg circles on pommel horse exercises require a high degree of dynamic balance. However, theoretical conditions for maintaining dynamic balance are unclear. The purpose of this paper is to propose a simple theoretical model of the dynamic balance of the circles, and to illustrate its qualitative properties. To this end, the body of a gymnast is simply modeled as one rigid body with one support point, and symmetric and constant-velocity circles are assumed in most analyses. The condition that the torques of wrist and shoulder joints are zero is assumed as a dynamic balance condition with minimum strength. A control law is proposed to demonstrate the motion. Various properties of the dynamic balance condition are analyzed as follows. In the symmetric circles, (1) as the period of a circle decrease, the heights and the radius of the toes increase, and (2) the rotation of the body around its longitudinal axis in the double-leg circle has the effect of lifting the toes. (3) The shoulder and wrist torques can change the pose around the dynamic balance condition. In asymmetric circles, (4) the radius of the center of mass (CoM) increases as the angular velocity of the CoM around the support point decreases, and (5) the body angle with respect to the horizontal plane increases as the upward acceleration of the CoM increases. Moreover, mechanical principles of the circles are discussed as follows. (6) The CoM motion during the symmetric circles of the simple model can be related to the conical pendulum. In the simple model, (7) the pommel reaction force should be parallel to the arm segment when the wrist torque and the shoulder torque are equal or zero, and (8) to change the vertical component of the angular momentum of the body around the support point, the wrist torque around the vertical axis is needed. Introduction: In past work we demonstrated different patterns of white matter (WM) plasticity in females versus males associated with learning a lab-based unilateral motor skill. However, this work was completed in neurologically intact older adults. The current manuscript sought to replicate and expand upon these WM findings in two ways: (1) we investigated biological sex differences in neurologically intact young adults, and (2) participants learned a dynamic full-body balance task. Methods: 24 participants (14 female, 10 male) participated in the balance training intervention, and 28 were matched controls (16 female, 12 male). Correlational tractography was used to analyze changes in WM from pre- to post-training. Results: Both females and males demonstrated skill acquisition, yet there were significant differences in measures of WM between females and males. These data support a growing body of evidence suggesting that females exhibit increased WM neuroplasticity changes relative to males despite comparable changes in motor behavior (e.g., balance). Discussion: The biological sex differences reported here may represent an important factor to consider in both basic research (e.g., collapsing across females and males) as well as future clinical studies of neuroplasticity associated with motor function (e.g., tailored rehabilitation approaches). Although the back handspring step out (BHS) is a foundational skill in balance beam routines, it can be performed using different take-off techniques. Back injuries are highly prevalent in the BHS due to the combination of high spine extension and joint loading. However, it is unclear which technique minimises injury risk or leads to better BHS performance. The purpose of the study was to identify techniques used for the BHS take-off and analyse the resulting BHS performance. Gymnasts were found to use either: Simultaneous Flexion—trunk and knees flex at the same time; Sequential Flexion—trunk reaches its maximum flexion followed by knee flexion; or Double-Bounce—knees and trunk both flex and then the knees extend and flex again. To assess performance, point deductions were calculated, and dynamic balance, ground reaction forces (GRFs) and relevant joint angles were analysed. The techniques had no differences in point deductions or dynamic balance, but there were differences in GRFs, spine extension and knee flexion. The Sequential Flexion technique had the lowest spine extension, which potentially reduces back injuries and the lowest knee flexion, which is a BHS requirement. Objectives: To analyse the effectiveness of optokinetic stimulation (OKS) for improving symptoms and function in patients with vestibular and balance disorders. Methods: PubMed (MEDLINE), SCOPUS, Web of Science (WOS), CINAHL Complete, and PEDro databases were searched to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that included patients with vestibular and balance disorders and compared the effects of OKS versus other interventions or no intervention on subjective or objective functional outcomes. Data were analysed by the standardized mean difference (SMD) and its 95% confidence interval. Results: A total of 10 studies were selected including 468 patients, 177 of whom received OKS. There were no significant differences in scores on the Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI) (SMD = 0.02; 95% CI − 0.18 to 0.23; p = 0.83) or the visual analogue scale (VAS) for vertigo (SMD = 0.16; 95% CI − 1.25 to 1.58; p = 0.82). However, there were statistically significant differences in the timed up and go (TUG) test, with a large effect (SMD = − 1.13; 95% CI -2 to − 0.28; p = 0.009), and in the sensory organization test (SOT), with a medium effect (SMD = − 0.7; 95% CI − 1.21 to − 0.19; p = 0.007). Subgroup analysis showed significant effects of OKS on VAS (p = 0.017), TUG (p = 0.009) and SOT (p = 0.001) only in patients with balance disorders without vestibular disease (p > 0.05). Conclusions: OKS may improve dizziness intensity measured with VAS or dynamic balance measured whit TUG and SOT in patients with balance disorders not due to vestibular disease. In people with lower limb amputation (LLA), the loss of limb structures and peripheral motor and sensory systems result in significant mobility challenges, including impaired postural stability. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the dual-task interference (DTI) on postural control and dual-task interference on cognition during static and dynamic balance in people with LLA and compare the same with controls. The secondary objective of this study was to compare the DTI on postural control and DTI on cognition between LLA of different etiology. Cross-sectional observational study Fifteen people with unilateral LLA and 15 age and gender-matched controls participated in this study at a tertiary care hospital. The outcome measures used were anterior-posterior stability index (APSI), medial-lateral stability index, and overall stability index (OSI) using Biodex Balance System and a cognitive task parameter, namely correct response rate in serial seven subtraction test. Quantitative variables were compared using a Wilcoxon rank-sum test. Spearman's correlation test was used to establish the correlation between the DTI on cognition and the DTI on postural control. DTI on postural control during static balance was significantly higher in people with LLA than controls (APSI, OSI). No significant difference was observed in DTI on postural control during dynamic balance. No significant difference was observed in DTI on cognition during static and dynamic balance. A significant negative correlation was observed between DTI on cognition and DTI on postural control (APSI) during static balance people with LLA. Dynamic imbalance is one of the primary issues in rotary compressor applications, which can generate significant vibration. A dynamic balance design is required to minimize the moment and additional inertia force, which can be eliminated by adding a counterweight. This paper utilized a solid plate that has cavities filled with particle damper as a novel design to satisfy the dynamic balance. Vibrational energy is dissipated in collisions between particles through momentum exchange and is converted into energy for consumption that consists of inelastic collision energy and frictional energy. The discrete element method (DEM) and multi-body dynamics (MBD) were applied for two-way coupling for a dynamic balance simulation. The impact of particle size, friction coefficient, and restitution coefficient on energy dissipation in rotary compressors was evaluated, and the particle radius of 1 mm produced the most satisfactory. The experiment measured the vibrational acceleration in the tangential and radial directions at a particular duration and frequency to reflect the particle damper's dynamic balance and energy dissipation effect. Purpose: To evaluate the effect of strabismus surgery on dynamic balance by using computerized dynamic posturography in children with strabismus. Methods: This study was designed as a prospective observational study. Hearing tests and complete ophthalmological examinations were performed for all subjects. Patients with moderate and severe amblyopia, hearing loss at any level, and/or any suspicion of balance impairment were excluded from the study. Postural stability evaluation was performed by computerized dynamic posturography including sensory organization test, adaptation test, and rhythmic weight shift test. All tests were applied preoperatively and in the postoperative 1st and 3rd months, respectively. Results: Fifteen female and twelve male pre-adolescents aged between 7 and 12 (9.67 ± 1.62 years) were included in the current study. In the sensory organization test, the preoperative visual ratio percentages (73.19 ± 14.95%) improved statistically significantly at the postoperative 1st and 3rd months (78.59 ± 16.21% and 81.44 ± 14.18; p =.026, p =.021, respectively). The preoperative toes up (110.66 ± 33,48) and toes down (81.46 ± 28.36) adaptation tests improved statistically significantly in the postoperative 3rd month (88.74 ± 20.94 and 63.36 ± 16.03; p <.001, p =.001, respectively). In the Rhythmic Weight Shift test, the postoperative 3rd-month directional control (forward-backward) value (74.25 ± 11.51%) was statistically significantly higher compared to the preoperative directional control (forward-backward) value (67.76 ± 11.38%) (p =.011). Objectives: Task-oriented circuit training (TOCT) has been used to improve balance in people with Parkinson's disease (pwPD). To investigate the effectiveness of TOCT on balance, quality of life, and disease symptoms when combined with myofascial release in pwPD. Methods: Twenty-six pwPD were randomized into two groups for this randomized controlled study. The groups received TOCT three days a week for eight weeks. At the end of each session, the myofascial release was applied to the neck, trunk, and lumbar region with three sets of 60-s foam rolling body weight (Intervention group-IG) and perceived discomfort level 0/10 (Control group-CG) using a numeric rating scale. Primary outcome measures were measured by the Berg Balance Scale (BBS), Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire (PDQ-8), and Movement Disorder Society-Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS). Secondary outcome measures included posturographic assessment, timed-up and go test (TUG), Trunk Impairment Scale (TIS), and rolling time. Results: Data obtained from 26 pwPDs in equal numbers in both groups were analyzed. All groups reported a significant change in MDS-UPDRS, MDS-UPDRS-III, PDQ-8, TIS, and rolling time after treatment compared to pretreatment. Post-hoc analyses showed that IG significantly improved motor symptoms, TUG, and TIS dynamics compared to CG. The mediolateral limits of stability and anterioposterior limits of stability distances of IG increased (p < 0.05). Discussion: Myofascial release, when combined with TOCT, may help to reduce disease-related motor symptoms and improve dynamic balance in pwPD. Objective: To explore and compare the dosage of balance training on ankle function and dynamic balance ability in patients with chronic ankle instability (CAI). Methods: The PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Medline, and Cochrane databases were searched up to December 2023. Quality assessment was carried out using the risk-of-bias guidelines of the Cochrane Collaboration, and the standardized mean differences (SMD) or mean differences (MD) for each outcome were compute. Results: Among 20 eligible studies, including 682 participants were analyzed in this meta-analysis. The results of the meta-analysis demonstrated that balance training was effective in enhancing ankle function with self-functional scores (SMD = 1.02; 95% CI, 0.61 to 1.43; p < 0.00001; I2 = 72%) and variables associated with the ability of dynamic balance such as SEBT-A (MD = 5.88; 95% CI, 3.37 to 8.40; p < 0.00001; I2 = 84%), SEBT-PM (MD = 5.47; 95% CI, 3.40 to 7.54; p < 0.00001; I2 = 61%), and SEBT-PL (MD = 6.04; 95% CI, 3.30 to 8.79; p < 0.0001; I2 = 79%) of CAI patients. Meta-regression indicated that the intervention time might be the principal cause of heterogeneity (p = 0.046) in self-functional scores. In subgroup analyses of self-functional score across intervention types, among the intervention time, more than 20 min and less than 30 min had the most favorable effect (MD = 1.21, 95% CI: 0.96 to 1.46, p < 0.00001, I2 = 55%); among the intervention period, 4 weeks (MD = 0.84, 95% CI: 0.50 to 1.19, p < 0.00001, I2 = 78%) and 6 weeks (MD = 1.21, 95% CI: 0.91 to 1.51, p < 0.00001, I2 = 71%) had significant effects; among the intervention frequency, 3 times (MD = 1.14, 95% CI: 0.89 to 1.38), p < 0.00001, I2 = 57%) had significant effects. Secondly, in subgroup analyses of SEBT across intervention types, a 4-week and 6-week intervention with balance training 3 times a week for 20–30 min is the optimal combination of interventions to improve SEBT (dynamic balance) in patients with chronic ankle instability. Conclusion: Balance training proves beneficial for ankle function in patients with CAI. Intervention time constitutes a major factor influencing self-function in patients with CAI. It is recommended that the optimal dosage of balance training for CAI involves intervention three times a week, lasting for 20 to 30 min over a period of 4 to 6 weeks for superior rehabilitation. Introduction: Salinity is a key variable in the dynamic and thermal balance of the entire climate system. To address the complexities of diverse terrains and fluctuating ocean waves, we commonly use free-surface models with quasistationary (e.g. height, pressure, or terrain following) coordinates for simulating salinity. In such models, the vertical grid dynamically adjusts with the undulation of seawater. However, this adjustment also occurs when freshwater enters or exits the ocean. Freshwater-induced salinity changes at the ocean's surface are artificially distributed to each vertical layer within a model time step. This means that the freshwater at the ocean surface instantaneously and directly affects the seafloor. This process is different from physical diffusion processes. The diffusion effects caused by the influx and outflow of freshwater have a very small impact on the seafloor. This error leads to salinity non-conservation and disrupts the vertical distribution structure of salinity. Previous studies have also addressed this issue with solutions such as the vertical Lagrangian-remap method. Method: This paper proposes a natural vertical distribution calculation scheme (NVDCS) which is different from the approaches of our predecessors. In the discrete formulation of the original ocean equations, freshwater flux is introduced to ensure salinity conservation. In each model time step, by calculating the seawater volume changes due to freshwater inflow or outflow, as well as the vertical grid changes caused by sea surface undulations, the aforementioned artificial error is eliminated from each vertical layer. Discussion: This scheme ensures that changes in the vertical coordinates of each layer result solely from internal oceanic dynamic processes, avoiding the instantaneous and directly impact of surface freshwater. Ultimately, the influence of freshwater is confined to the ocean surface. Results: This method is straightforward to implement and user-friendly. Sensitivity experiments indicate that in free-surface models, quasi-stationary coordinates introduce artificial errors. The proposed calculation scheme not only eliminates this error but also achieves a better vertical distribution structure than using virtual salt flux, while ensuring salinity conservation. The gluteus medius (GM) plays an important role in stabilizing the knee and preventing injury. This study aimed to determine the immediate effects of weight-bearing gluteus medius exercises on lower-extremity muscle function and dynamic knee valgus. Eighteen healthy adults (nine each of both sexes) performed three types of weight-bearing gluteus medius exercises (standing, mini-squat, and dead-lift), and a range of kinematic variables were tested in triplicate. Weight-supporting GM exercise consisted of three sets of 15 repetitions of the lateral band walk. The Y-balance test (YBT) and vertical single-leg jump were used as indicators of muscle function in the lower limbs. We used a video analyzer to film the dynamic knee valgus and performed a YBT for the supporting leg and landing leg following a jump. The height of the single-leg vertical jump and the posterolateral and total YBT scores were significantly higher in the dead-lift posture than in the standing and mini-squat postures. Motion analysis of the dead-lifts revealed high hip flexion on the supporting leg in the posterolateral direction, as determined by the YBT, with low levels of internal hip rotation on the landing leg during the one-leg vertical jump. Background: Exergames are a fun, viable, attractive, and safe way to engage in physical exercise for most patient populations, including older adults. Their use in the home environment enables an expanded understanding about its applicability and its impact on clinical outcomes that can contribute to improved functionality and quality of life in this population. This systematic review aimed to synthesize the evidence on the usability of exergames as a tool for home-based balance training in older adults. Methods: The search was realized in 6 electronic databases and were included 1) randomized controlled trials with exergames home-based training as intervention, 2) studies involving older adults (aged 60 years or older) described as having impaired static or dynamic balance, 3) that compared the effects of exergames to usual care, health education or no intervention, and 4) reported usability and balance outcomes. The Cochrane Risk of Bias tool for randomized trials version 2 and the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation were used to evaluate the methodological quality of studies and levels of evidence for outcomes. Results: After screening 1107 records, we identified 4 trials were included. The usability score of exergames was classified as an acceptable, good, and feasible tool. The pooled effect indicated improvements in favor of the exergame group for functional balance by TUG test (MD = -5.90; 95%CI = -10.29 to -1.51) with low-certainty evidence and Tinetti scale (MD = 4.80; 95%CI = 3.36 to 6.24) with very low-certainty evidence. Analyzing the different immersion level, it was observed a significant difference in the experimental group for the immersive exergames (MD = -9.14; 95%CI = -15.51 to -2.77) with very low-certainty evidence. Conclusion: Exergames applied at home showed good usability and had significant effects on functional balance compared to usual care or no intervention, especially in the immersive modality. Introduction: Stereotype threat can lead older adults to perceive their experiences in a biased manner, giving rise to interfering thoughts and negative emotions that generate stress and anxiety. Negative beliefs about aging may serve as an additional factor that increases the need for attentional demand, potentially resulting in a performance level below their actual capabilities. In the present study, we asked whether negative aging stereotypes influence a dynamic balance task and explored the means to counteract them in healthy elderly participants. Methods: The performance of balance was compared in two groups of participants aged 65 to 75 years (n = 22) under stereotype threat or reducedthreat situation. Balance abilities were tested under dynamic conditions, requiring participants to maintain balance on a moving platform and using a gradient of difficulty (with eyes open or closed, without or with foam). Postural performance was evaluated by means of posturographic evaluation of the center of pressure displacement and motion analysis. Additionally, we investigated the effects of stereotype threat on a preferred walking speed task and on the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test. Results: Participants under stereotype threat showed poorer balance, particularly in challenging conditions (eyes closed, on foam), with less effective body segments stabilization. Their postural stabilization on foam was worse compared to a solid surface. Conversely, those in the reduced threat condition maintained better body segment stabilization across all conditions, indicating consistent postural control regardless of the presence of foam. Stereotype threat did not affect preferred walking speed or the time to complete the "Time Up and Go" test. Discussion-conclusion: This study provides the first description of age-based stereotype threat effects on a dynamic balance task and how to counteract them in healthy older adults. We suggest that the decrease in postural performance observed in participants exposed to stereotype threat can be attributed to a split in attentional focus between negative intrusive thoughts and the attention needed for maintaining balance. These findings open new perspectives on how to overcome negative expectations when evaluating and training physical abilities, thereby contributing to fall prevention among older adults. Introduction: In performance-based approaches and quality assessment protocols used both in the technological design of architecture and the environmental design of the built habitat, the concept of psycho-physical wellbeing is usually defined in purely quantitative human-techno-centric or eco-techno-centric terms. However, in socio-technical-environmental realities in continuous transition, wellbeing extends to areas that cannot be confined within the notions of comfort or healthiness because it involves material and immaterial, cultural and technical, aesthetic and performative, real and virtual aspects. Method: The aim of this article emerges from studies being conducted as part of Ex-Mind research. The working hypothesis is to broaden performance-based approaches in a technological-environmental sense to avoid reducing the goal of psycho-physical wellbeing just to the compliance with technical-constructive aspects. It could be possible combining the material and quantifiable dimensions with other aspects that extend the project to sensorial, perceptive, and emotional interactions. Important theoretical-scientific evidence is already emerging on this dichotomy to be overcome from areas of project evaluation responsive to the new paradigms of sustainability such as resilience, inclusive placemaking, and wellbeing according to the flourish model. Characteristics such as dimensions, proportions, shapes, colors, scents and immaterial aspects of spaces, for example, should be evaluated with respect to the complex physical and mental comfort conditions that they can produce. Results: In the technological-environmental vision of the human habitat project, the objective of psycho-physical wellbeing should be a function of the dynamic balance between the constantly evolving users'/inhabitants' needs and the variability of context factors and agents. The concept of wellbeing therefore takes on a scalar and expanded declination. Considering the technological-environmental approach, a possible element of originality emerges in the integrated and balanced human-environmental centered vision aimed at broadening the framework of the qualitative-quantitative references of the project of the human habitat. This could be an alternative bio-psycho-socio-technological methodological vision starting from the determinants of wellbeing in a broad sense, including natural, cultural and socioeconomic environmental factors, social and collective networks of relationships and participation, individual behavioral, physical, and functional factors of people. Added to these determinants are the different technological-environmental interface systems with which the project is able to define, in a bio-psycho-socio-technological sense, multiple and variable regulatory conditions of wellbeing, at a building, urban, and territorial level. Discussion: The possible outcomes of this alternative and integrated hypothesis are related to the reconnection with the production and regeneration processes of the built material, to the reorganization and reinvention of spatial and perceptual relationships between individuals, communities, technologies, environment, and to the integration of non-directly quantifiable subjective variables into the design of the built environment. Background: The "SEBT group," which includes the Star Excursion Balance Test (SEBT), its modified version (mSEBT), and the Lower Quarter Y-Balance Test (YBT-LQ), is used to assess the limits of stability. Interestingly, the testing protocol allows users a considerable degree of flexibility, which can affect the obtained results. Therefore, the objective of this systematic review was to analyze the impact of different protocol variants within the "SEBT group" on outcomes. Methods: Data were acquired by searching 4 databases (MEDLINE, ScienceDirect, Wiley, Springer Link) focusing on studies published in English in peer-reviewed journals, empirical in nature, conducted on healthy individuals, and examining the effects of various protocol variants on test outcomes. Study quality was assessed with the NHLBI quality assessment tool for pre-post studies with no control group. Results: The calculation method based on the maximum repetition yields statistically significantly higher results compared to other calculation methods. Allowing unrestricted arm movements during the test results in statistically significantly higher scores compared to the procedure that restricts arm movements. The impact of a warm-up, wearing footwear during testing, and using a dedicated kit remains ambiguous. To obtain reliable results, 4-6 familiarization trials are necessary, though fewer may suffice for athletes experienced in performing the test. Conclusion: This systematic review highlights the significant impact of the calculation method and arm movement restrictions on the outcomes of the "SEBT group." The effects of wearing footwear during testing, warm-up, and using a dedicated test kit remain unclear. The required number of familiarization repetitions may varies depending on biological maturity level of the person being tested. Background: Due to technological advancements and the development of consumer-oriented head mounted displays (HMDs), virtual reality (VR) is used in studies on balance performance and balance trainability more and more frequently. Yet, it may be assumed that balance performance is affected by the physical characteristics of the HMD (e.g., weight) as well as by the virtual visual environment. Moreover, it has been shown that balance is age-dependent with children and adolescents showing worse performances compared to young adults, which may also affect their balance performance in virtual environments. Objectives: The present systematic scoping review aims to provide an overview on the current evidence regarding balance performance of healthy, young individuals (6-30 years) in real and matched virtual environments. Methods: A systematic literature search in the electronic databases PubMed, Web of Science, and SPORTDiscus (from their inception date to February 2024) resulted in 9,554 studies potentially eligible for inclusion. Eligibility criteria were: (i) investigation of healthy, young individuals (6-30 years), (ii) balance assessment in the real and a matched virtual environment, (iii) use of a fully immersive HMD, (iv) reporting of at least one balance parameter. A total of 10 studies met the predefined inclusion criteria and were thus included in this review. All studies were conducted with healthy, young adults (19-30 years). Results: Five studies assessed static balance, four studies quantified dynamic balance, and one study measured static as well as dynamic balance performance. In healthy young adults, static balance performance was similar with and without VR during simple standing tasks (e.g., two-legged stance), but worse in VR during more challenging tasks (e.g., one-legged stance). Concerning dynamic balance, four out of five studies reported worse performance in VR, while one study did not find differences between visual environments. Most importantly, none of the studies investigating healthy children (6-12 years) and/or adolescents (13-18 years) met the predefined inclusion criteria. Conclusion: In healthy young adults, balance performance seems to be affected by VR only during challenging static (e.g., one-legged stance) as well as during dynamic balance tasks. The underlying causes remain unclear, but factors such as perceived presence in VR, a shift in sensory organization and/or perceptual distortion may play a role. This study investigated the effects of Tai Chi training on functionality, dynamic balance, kinesiophobia, and quality of life in athletes with Functional Ankle Instability (FAI). Forty-three athletes with FAI were randomly assigned to either a Tai Chi group (n = 21) or a control group (n = 22). The Tai Chi group followed a tailored exercise protocol addressing ankle instability through a three-phase progression, while the control group had no intervention but continued their usual activities. Measurements, including Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool (CAIT), Star Excursion Balance Test (SEBT), Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia (TSK), Short Form-12 (SF-12), figure-8 hop test, and perceived treatment effect were assessed before and after the intervention. The Tai Chi group showed significant improvements in CAIT score and SEBT reach distance compared to the control group (p < 0.001). Tai Chi exercises also reduced TSK, improved figure-8 hop score, and enhanced the physical component of SF-12 (p < 0.005), with no significant effect on the mental component of SF-12 (p = 0.7). Heart failure (HF) has a severe impact on public health development due to high morbidity and mortality and is associated with imbalances in cardiac immunoregulation. Macrophages, a major cell population involved in cardiac immune response and inflammation, are highly heterogeneous and polarized into M1 and M2 types depending on the microenvironment. M1 macrophage releases inflammatory factors and chemokines to activate the immune response and remove harmful substances, while M2 macrophage releases antiinflammatory factors to inhibit the overactive immune response and promote tissue repair. M1 and M2 restrict each other to maintain cardiac homeostasis. The dynamic balance of M1 and M2 is closely related to the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) yin-yang theory, and the imbalance of yin and yang will result in a pathological state of the organism. Studies have confirmed that TCM produces positive effects on HF by regulating macrophage polarization. This review describes the critical role of macrophage polarization in inflammation, fibrosis, angiogenesis and electrophysiology in the course of HF, as well as the potential mechanism of TCM regulation of macrophage polarization in preventing and treating HF, thereby providing new ideas for clinical treatment and scientific research design of HF. Objective: To explore the mechanism by which Tregs promote the progression of colorectal cancer by inducing tumor-associated macrophages to polarize into M2 type via ICOS. Methods: Postoperative pathological tissues and clinical pathological data of 268 colorectal cancer patients who underwent initial surgery were collected. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) was used to detect the expression levels of ICOS, CD163 (a marker for M2 macrophages), and Foxp3 (a marker for Tregs) in cancerous, adjacent non-tumorous, and normal tissues. The relationship of ICOS, M2 macrophages, and Tregs in CRC with clinical pathological characteristics and pre-surgical tumor markers (such as CEA and CA199) was explored. Results: The expression levels of M2 macrophages and Tregs increased with tumor progression, while ICOS expression showed a decreasing trend. Compared to adjacent and normal tissues, the expression levels of ICOS, M2 macrophages, and Tregs were higher in CRC tissues. The expression levels of M2 macrophages and Tregs were significantly positively correlated with tumor markers, while ICOS expression was significantly negatively correlated. Conclusion: Tumor-associated m2 macrophages induced by Tregs and ICOS participate in the dynamic balance of the colorectal cancer tumor microenvironment, and their interaction affects colorectal carcinogenesis and progression. Background: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is the standard procedure for treating end-stage knee osteoarthritis. Nevertheless, some residual issues can persist, leading to various problems, including pain, compromised strength, impaired proprioception, postural instability, dynamic balance issues, and gait deficiencies. The Lie-to-Sit-to-Stand-to-Walk Transfer Test (LSSWT) implements a multi-faceted methodology to evaluate basic transfer abilities. The purpose of this study is to investigate the validity, reliability, and minimal clinically important difference of the LSSWT in TKA patients. Methods: Twenty-two patients with TKA were enrolled in this study. The patients were administered the LSSWT, the Timed Up and Go Test (TUG), and the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) knee score. Patients rested between the tests for an hour to prevent fatigue. Results: The mean age was 68.1 ± 2.59 years and the mean HSS Knee Score was 85.43 ± 3.47 of the patients. The relative (ICC coefficient) and absolute (SEM and SRD95) reliability values were 0.88, 1.21, and 3.33 respectively. The Spearman correlation coefficient of the LSSWT with the TUG was 0.63. Conclusions: The LSSWT displays excellent reliability and high validity in assessing fall risk, complex dynamic balance, and mobility required for daily activities in patients post-TKA. The low MCID value (3.33) indicates its sensitivity and ability to identify minor changes in a patient's status over time or in response to rehabilitation applications. This paper explores the mechanisms that lead to a destructive tendency in the formation and functioning of the psychic apparatus, to the characteristic states of subjects who are drawn to non-life. Previous research has proven that the balance of autistic children is poor. However, the reliability of assessing balance in this cohort has been inadequately researched. This study therefore aimed to examine if field-based static and dynamic balance tests can be reliably assessed in autistic children, to determine the number of familiarisation sessions required and whether autistic severity impacts on the reliability of these balance tests. The balance of eighteen primary school-aged autistic children was assessed three times a week over five weeks, using the flamingo balance test, a modified version of the balance error scoring system (BESS), the low beam walking test, and the heel to toe walking test. Reliability criteria included an intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) level of ≥0.75 and a coefficient of variance (CV%) of ≤46% for the low beam walking test, the heel to toe walking test, and the BESS, and a CV% of ≤82% or the flamingo balance test. Inter-session reliability was achieved and required the least number of familiarisation sessions for the flamingo balance test, compared to the low beam walking test, which required a greater number of familiarisation sessions to achieve inter-session reliability. The heel to toe walking test and the BESS achieved inter-session reliability and familiarisation in an acceptable time frame. Due to the large CV% values reported in the current study, practitioners need to be aware that balance interventions need to achieve improvements greater than the CV% in this cohort. Micro-cathode arc thruster offers promising applications in micro–nanosatellite space missions owing to its simple structure, high specific impulse, and low power consumption. However, the non-uniform ablation of the cathode poses a significant limitation on the total impulse of micro-cathode arc thruster. This non-uniformity can be categorized into circumferential and radial types, with previous research primarily focusing on the influence of circumferential ablation non-uniformity. Nevertheless, it has been observed that radial ablation non-uniformity also affects the stability of the thruster, despite the lack of studies in this area. To investigate the mechanism behind the cathode radial ablation, a slice model has been designed to study the motion process of the cathode spots during a single discharge using a high-speed camera. From this analysis aims to identify the root cause of uneven cathode radial ablation. Building upon these findings, a double anode micro-cathode arc thruster has been devised to enhance the uniformity of cathode ablation. Experimental verification has been conducted to assess the performance of the double anode micro-cathode arc thruster. The results indicate that in the traditional micro-cathode arc thruster discharge process, the cathode spots do not migrate towards the outer layer covered by the shell. Instead, they extend to the surface of the shell along the contact area between the shell and cathode. This leads to unequal ablation between the inner and outer layers of the cathode. The double anode micro-cathode arc thruster effectively addresses these issues by providing two discharge channels that maintain the dynamic balance of electrode resistance and increase the ablation amount on the outer layer of the cathode. Consequently, the total impulse of the thruster improved significantly while ensuring the desired performance index. • A slice model has been designed to study the motion process of cathode spots during a single discharge. The creation of a dark hole (DH) region in the science image for exoplanet direct detection depends on deformable mirrors (DMs), where the imperfect control of DM limits the achievable contrast. The mirror surface height resolution is set by the DM drive electronics, and the quantization errors in DM impact the contrast in the DH. Consequently, determining the optimal voltage value for the flattening map of DM is essential, as it involves balancing dynamic and accuracy considerations. We conduct a numerical study to examine the impact of these parameters on microelectromechanical DM within the high-contrast field of view of several DHs with various characteristics and optical configurations. Our analysis includes an exploration of their influence on both small and moderate angular separations. We compare our numerical results with a formula available in the literature that aims to capture the dependence of contrast on DM quantization errors. We show that the formula accuracy to predict the contrast limit when the DM deflection curves follow the as-manufactured quadratic power law is dependent on the DM flattening map voltage domain, regardless of DH size and angular separations. Further these results appear to be insensitive to factors such as actuator number, coronagraph type, set-up architecture, and science objective (small or moderate angular separations). We provide guidelines for determining the optimal voltage for the DM flattening map, discuss the domain validity of the formula used to predict DM quantization errors on the contrast, and provide insights into balancing DM actuator density and mirror surface height resolution. Dynamic polyimines are a class of fascinating dynamic polymers with recyclability and reparability owing to their reversible Schiff‐base reactions. However, balancing the dynamic properties and mechanical strength of dynamic polyimines presents a major challenge due to the dissociative and associative nature of the imine bonds. Herein, we introduced bulky fluorene groups and polyether amine into the skeleton of polyimine networks to achieve a tradeoff in comprehensive properties. The resulting dynamic polyimines with fluorene groups (Cardo‐DPIs) were successfully synthesized by combining the rigid diamine 9,9‐bis(4‐aminophenyl)fluorene and the flexible polyether amine, demonstrating a high tensile strength of 64.7 MPa. Additionally, Cardo‐DPIs films with more content of rigid fluorene groups exhibited higher water resistance, glass transition temperature and wear‐resisting ability. Moreover, the Cardo‐DPIs films not only efficiently underwent thermal reshaping, but also exhibited excellent self‐healing capabilities and chemical degradation in acidic solutions. Furthermore, the resulting films can achieve fully closed‐loop recovery by free amine solution for 2 h at room temperature. Dual-output three-level converters are widely used in multiphase motor drives, and their common-mode voltage (CMV) and neutral point (NP) balance problems can affect the safe and stable operation of systems. Owing to their unique structure, certain disabled switching states exist. Suppressing the CMV to comply with operational constraints is worthy of further investigation. In this paper, an improved time-sharing virtual space vector (ITVSV) modulation strategy is proposed. In addition, the working principle of the converter is analyzed and divided into two effective working modes. The proposed strategy defines two kinds of virtual vector synthesis methods, using virtual vectors instead of the basic small vector of large CMV to reduce the degrees of freedom of voltage fluctuation. The switching loss can be reduced by adjusting the switching sequence in some areas. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the NP voltage is self-balancing within one primitive period. The present study introduces a rapid and accurate customized solver on the OpenFOAM platform for large-scale industrial computations. Specifically, a sparse analytical Jacobian approach utilizing the SpeedCHEM library was implemented to enhance the efficiency of the ordinary differential equation solver. The dynamic load balancing code was used to distribute computational workloads uniformly across multiple processes. Optimization continued with open multi-processing to improve parallel computing efficiency and the local time stepping scheme to maximize individual cell time steps. The effectiveness and robustness of the customized solver were first validated using Sandia flames D–F as benchmarks. The results showed that the customized solver exhibited better strong scaling characteristics and led to a speed increase of up to 30 times for two-dimensional Sandia flame D calculations. The numerical predictions for temperature and species distribution closely matched the experimental trends, confirming the accuracy of the solver. Subsequently, a three-dimensional numerical study on a 10 kW ammonia co-combustion furnace was conducted, exploring the performance of the solver in large-scale reactive simulations. Results analysis indicated that the acceleration capability was reduced due to increased communication overhead between processors, achieving up to 7.06 times speed-up. However, as the size of the reaction mechanism increases, better acceleration capabilities can be demonstrated. The numerical predictions could closely replicate experimental trends, effectively predicting NO emission trends within the combustion furnace. This study offers one viable solution for rapid and accurate calculations in the OpenFOAM platform, which could be applied in the subsequent ammonia industrial combustion processes. Due to the complexity and short timescale of detonation, it is usually difficult to capture its transient characteristics experimentally. Advanced numerical methods are essential for enhancing the understanding of the flow field structure and combustion mechanism of detonation. In this study, a density-based compressible reactive flow solver called CDSFoam is developed for simulating gas-droplet two-phase detonation combustion based on OpenFOAM. The primary feature of this solver is its implementation of two-way coupling between gas and liquid phases, utilizing the Eulerian–Lagrangian method. The key enhancement is an improved approximate Riemann solver used to solve the convective flux, reducing dissipation while ensuring robustness. Time integration is achieved through the third-order strong stability preserving Runge–Kutta method. Additionally, CDSFoam incorporates dynamic load balancing and adaptive mesh refinement techniques to mitigate computational costs while achieving high-resolution flow fields dynamically. To validate the reliability and accuracy of the solver, a series of benchmark cases are examined, including the multi-component inert and reactive shock tube, the stable diffusion process, the Riemann problem, the one-dimensional detonation, the two-dimensional detonation and oblique detonation, the droplet phase model, the two-dimensional gas–liquid two-phase detonation, and the two-phase rotating detonation. The results show that CDSFoam can well predict the shock wave discontinuity, shock wave induced ignition, molecular diffusion, detonation key parameters, detonation cell size, and the main characteristics of gas–liquid two-phase detonation. Traditional phase engineering enhances conductivity or activity by fully converting electrocatalytic materials into either a crystalline or an amorphous state, but this approach often faces limitations. Thus, a practical solution entails balancing the dynamic attributes of both phases to maximize an electrocatalyst's functionality is urgently needed. Herein, in this work, Co/Co 2 C crystals have been assembled on the amorphous N, S co-doped porous carbon (NSPC) through hydrothermal and calcination processes. The stable biphase structure and amorphous/crystalline (A/C) interface enhance conductivity and intrinsic activity. Moreover, the adsorption ability of water molecules and intermediates is improved significantly attributed to the rich oxygen-containing groups, unsaturated bonds, and defect sites of NSPC, which accelerates proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) and overall water splitting. Consequently, A/C-Co/Co 2 C/NSPC (Co/Co 2 C/NSPC with amorphous/crystalline interface) exhibits outstanding behavior for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), requiring the overpotential of 240.0 mV and 70.0 mV to achieve 10 mA cm−2. Moreover, an electrolyzer assembled by A/C-Co/Co 2 C/NSPC-3 (anode) and A/C-Co/Co 2 C/NSPC-2 (cathode) demonstrates a low drive voltage of 1.54 V during overall water splitting process. Injuries involving ankle stability and range of motion are among the most frequent in athletes and in the general population. In response, this study aimed to assess the immediate effects of toe separators on dynamic stability and ankle range of motion in healthy young individuals. Among the 68 eligible participants, 50 healthy and active subjects completed all trials. The impact of the intervention was evaluated using the Weight Bearing Lunge Test and Y-Test. The control condition performed the tests without toe separators, while the experimental condition performed the tests with toe separators. All participants performed both conditions with a wash-out period of at least 7 days between trials. Statistical analysis revealed no significant differences in dynamic balance (p > 0.05) and range of motion (p > 0.05) between the two conditions. Additionally, no asymmetries were detected between the lower limbs in both tests (p > 0.05). The results of this pilot study indicate that using toe separators does not have an immediate effect on ankle range of motion and dynamic balance in young, healthy individuals. The COVID-19 pandemic, a significant public health emergency, has underscored the criticality of jobs–housing proximity. Static statistical research, however, struggles to uncover the mechanisms underlying jobs–housing balance, providing limited guidance for urban management. This paper adopts the concept of jobs–housing dynamic balance, analyzing the trends in jobs–housing balance in the metropolitan development area of Wuhan in the early and later period of the pandemic from the perspective of individual jobs–housing migration. Using mobile phone signaling data, we identified a stable population of 161,698 residents in June 2019, June 2021, and June 2023, and calculated jobs–housing synchronization and migration impact indices across seven regions. The study finds the following: (1) there is a pronounced misalignment of jobs–housing in the new cities of Wuhan's suburbs, with clear asynchronous in-migration and out-migration; (2) COVID-19 initially led to a unidirectional exodus of the local population for job purposes, significantly contributing to regional jobs–housing imbalance, followed by a partial rebound in the later stages; and (3) the stability of jobs–housing balance in suburban new cities lacking policy support and comprehensive urban functions is worse, primarily due to insufficient employment resilience and the out-migration of the employed population. This paper puts forward a set of recommendations for the sustainable development of suburban new cities. It offers insights into the theoretical advancement of jobs–housing balance and the dynamic, refined transformation of urban studies, enhancing urban managers' understanding of human–place interactions and new city construction. Background: This scoping review summarizes the tasks and outcomes in dynamic and functional balance assessments of individuals with chronic ankle instability, focusing on the physiological and biomechanical characteristics. Method: A comprehensive literature search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and MEDLINE databases in September 2023 and revised in April 2024. Studies evaluating dynamic and functional balance in chronic ankle instability using clinical tests, as well as biomechanical and physiological outcomes, were included. Results: Out of 536 publications, 31 met the screening criteria. A history of ankle sprain was the main focus of the inclusion criteria (28 articles, 90%). The star excursion balance test, emphasizing maximum reach distance, was the most common quantitative task (12 articles, 66%). Physiological data mainly came from electromyography studies (7 articles, 23%), while biomechanical variables were often assessed through center of pressure studies using force plates (17 articles, 55%). Conclusions: The preferred quantitative clinical assessment was the star excursion balance test, focusing on normalized reach outcomes. Qualitative functional balance assessments emphasize landing activities and center of pressure displacement. Electromyography is commonly used to analyze the tibialis anterior and peroneus longus muscles. Previous works have proposed various techniques to address the premature convergence problem, where candidate solutions get trapped in local optima instead of reaching the global optimum. This has been tackled using different selection methods in metaheuristic search algorithms. However, while much of the literature focuses on either the search operators or the creation of algorithm variants, research indicates that the effectiveness of the search procedure depends on both the search operators and the selection methods. Incorporating problem-specific functional weights enhances dynamic adaptation to data patterns, reflects data relevance, and improves generalization. This paper offers an enhanced Artificial Bee Colony algorithm including functional weights and a modified selection strategy (ABC-FWMSS) to prioritize features, aiming to achieve an optimal solution and a dynamic balance between exploration and exploitation. The exploration ability of the Artificial Bee Colony is enhanced using pretrained model functional weights during the employed bee phase, while its exploitative capabilities are boosted using tournament selection and employed bee index during the onlooker bee phase. This approach dynamically balances exploration and exploitation. The Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) is now the most widely used criterion for measuring the goodness of fit between the hydrological model simulation and corresponding observation. Because there is substantial sampling uncertainty regarding hydrological simulation and observation, the NSE is a random variable. A probability density function (PDF) of NSE variable was derived based on the assumption of the simple linear regression model between the observation and simulation from the hydrological model. To avoid a subjective interpretation of the hydrological model performance, the confidence interval of the NSE variable was determined by its PDF. Because the difference in NSE variables (Φ) between two time periods or two hydrological models is often used for comparing their performances and can also be taken as a random variable, hypothesis testing should be implemented to determine whether the difference is adequate or whether the difference is a chance variation. Because the PDF of the difference can be derived based on the joint PDF of the every NSE random variables, a procedure of the hypothesis testing for the difference between two NSE variables is then proposed for comparing the performances between the hydrological models or between different time periods for a hydrological model. The proposed hypothesis testing has been applied in the abcd and dynamic water balance model (DWBM) hydrological models as case studies to illustrate the procedure of assessing the performances of a hydrological model and justifying its superiority to another model according to both the estimated NSE value and its confidence level due to the sampling uncertainty. The aim of the present study was to understand the effect of a multicomponent physical exercise program on the functional physical fitness of older people with overweight or obesity in Chile, and whether these effects were similar in women and men. For this purpose, a quasi-experimental study was designed with a control group to evaluate the functional physical fitness through the Senior Fitness Test battery for older people [SFT; aerobic endurance (AE), lower body strength (LBS), upper body strength (UBS), upper body flexibility (UBF), lower body flexibility (LBF), dynamic balance (DB), and hand pressure strength right (HPSR) and left (HPSL)]. Seventy older people with overweight or obesity aged between 60 and 86 years participated (M = 73.15; SD = 5.94), and were randomized into a control group (CG, n = 35) and an experimental group (EG, n = 35). The results after the intervention between the CG and EG indicated that there were statistically significant differences in the AE (p = 0.036), in the LBS (p = 0.031), and in the LBF (p = 0.017), which did not exist before the intervention (p > 0.050), except in the HPSR (0.029). Regarding the results of the EG (pre vs. post-intervention), statistically significant differences were found in all of the variables studied: AE (p < 0.001), LBS (p < 0.001), UBS (p < 0.001), LBF (p = 0.017), UBF (p < 0.001), DB (p = 0.002), HPSR (p < 0.001), and HPSL (p = 0.012) in both men and women. These improvements did not exist in any of the CG variables (p > 0.05). Based on the results obtained, we can say that a multicomponent physical exercise program applied for 6 months in older people with overweight or obesity produces improvements in functional physical fitness regardless of sex, except in lower body flexibility and left-hand dynamometry. Background and Objectives: There is a lack of studies examining balance problems and Achilles tendon thickness in prediabetes despite their common occurrence in diabetes mellitus. The aim of this study was to evaluate Achilles tendon size and static and dynamic balance, as well as the role of the Achilles tendon in balance, in prediabetic patients. Materials and Methods: A total of 96 participants were divided into three groups: (1) the control group, consisting of participants without diabetes mellitus; (2) the prediabetes group; and (3) the diabetes mellitus group. Ultrasonographic measurements of Achilles tendon sizes (thickness, width and area) were performed. Dynamic balance was assessed using the Berg Balance Scale, and static balance (the Fall and Stability Indices) was assessed using a Tetrax device. The Self-Leeds Assessment of Neuropathic Symptoms and Signs was utilized to identify neuropathic pain. Results: In the prediabetes group, the median dynamic balance scores [54.0 (51.0–56.0)] were lower than those of the control group [55.0 (54.0–56.0)] but higher than those of the patients with diabetes mellitus [52.50 (49.0–54.25)]; however, this difference did not reach statistical significance. The ultrasonographic measurements of the Achilles tendon size were similar among the three groups. On the other hand, in the prediabetes group, a positive correlation was observed between the bilateral Achilles tendon anterior–posterior thickness and Fall Index score (p = 0.045), while a negative correlation was found between the left Achilles tendon anterior–posterior thickness and the Berg Balance Score (p = 0.045). Conclusions: In prediabetes, neither Achilles tendon size nor static or dynamic balance appears to be significantly affected. However, in prediabetic patients, increased Achilles tendon thickness appears to be associated with increased risk of falls and decreased balance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Objectives: Compared to other subjects, obese people have inferior trunk muscle endurance and balance. A modern method of neuro-muscular training called whole body vibration (WBV) may improve trunk muscle endurance and balance. This study evaluates the impact of a 4-week WBV program on trunk endurance and balance in obese female students. Materials and Methods: Sixty participants from 18 to 25 years of age and with BMI values ≥ 30 were randomly distributed into two equal groups: Group A (WBV group), who received 4 min of WBV, and Group B (sham WBV group), who received WBV with a turn-off device. The training was conducted two days/week for six weeks. Trunk endurance was evaluated using the Sorensen Test (ST) and Trunk Flexor Endurance Test (TFET). The Single-Leg Test (SLT) was used to assess static balance, while the Biodex Stability System measured dynamic balance. Results: The current study demonstrated no significant differences (p > 0.05) in pre-treatment variables between Groups A and B. Post-treatment, Group A showed a significantly higher duration of the Sorensen test, TFET and SLS than Group B (p < 0.001). Moreover, Group A showed significantly lower dynamic balance (p < 0.001) than Group B. Conclusions: WBV has a short-term effect on trunk endurance and balance in obese female students. Introduction: Flow, defined as a heightened state of consciousness characterized by intense concentration during an activity, is influenced primarily by the perceived challenge and the dynamic equilibrium of skills. This investigation focuses on the patterns of flow state attainment and its elicitation mechanisms within the context of piano performance among Chinese music college students. Methods: Our study establishes a framework for accessing flow, utilizing quantitative data from music ontology to gauge the level of challenge and the level of music acquisition to assess skills. Additionally, we integrate external factors such as music culture heterogeneity and demographic variables to elucidate the causes and moderating effects of flow on piano performance. Results: The findings reveal a positive correlation between flow and performance, with the model of challenge and skill induction partially explaining these results. Notably, melodic Shannon Entropy emerges as a potential indicator of challenge, suggesting its relevance in future studies on flow. Discussion: This research provides multidimensional insights into the interplay between performance and flow in piano performance, guiding future investigations to explore the musical quantitative perspective more deeply. Understanding the contribution vision has to dynamic balance control may help in understanding where/why loss of balance occurs during everyday locomotion. The current study determined how body-centre-of-mass (BCoM) dynamics and postural stability when moving to and holding a single-limb-stance (SS) or an up-on-the-toes (UTT) position were affected by visual occlusion. From standing on a force platform, 18 adults (mean (SD) 26.7 (4.8) years; 1.73 (0.08) m; 84.0 (22.9) kg; 7 females) completed repeated trials (x3) with and without vision in which they moved to either a SS or an UTT position (order countered-balanced), and attempted to hold that position for 2 (SS) or 5 (UTT) seconds before returning to standing. UTT trials were also repeated at a fast speed, and SS trials were repeated using both the dominant and non-dominant limb. BCoM dynamics were assessed by analysing the displacement and peak velocity of the centre-of-pressure (CoP) when moving to and from the SS and UTT positions. Balance stability was the variability in the CoP displacement/velocity when holding these positions. Results indicate that under visual occlusion, the peak CoP velocity when moving to the SS or UTT position was reduced (ES, 0.67 and 0.68, respectively), suggesting greater caution. Both the variability in the CoP displacement/velocity when holding these positions and the peak CoP velocity when returning to flat-standing increased (SS: ES, 1.0 and 0.86, respectively; UTT: ES 1.26 and 0.66, respectively), suggesting, respectively, greater instability and poorer control. The poorer control in SS trials, occurred when returning to standing from the SS position held on the non-dominant limb, and correspondingly, the reduction in SS duration when vision was occluded was greater for the non-dominant limb trails (limb-vision interaction; p = 0.042). This suggests that movements initiated/controlled by the non-dominant limb are more reliant on visual feedback than those initiated/controlled by the dominant limb. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Modular motor drives can be considered as multi‐agent systems, in which the agents can work together to reach a common goal. One agent in such a modular motor drive consists of only a subset of the machine phases and power electronic converter modules, and is equipped with a dedicated controller. When the dc‐links of the different agents are connected in series to a single voltage source, giving rise to a so‐called stacked polyphase bridges converter, the power electronic converter components can have low voltage ratings. However, a voltage balancing controller must ensure that the total dc‐link voltage is distributed evenly among the agents when working in motoring mode. The goal of this research is to propose a multi‐agent voltage balancing algorithm based on dynamic average consensus, which depends solely on local computations, local measurements, and neighbour‐to‐neighbour communication. The scalability and reliability of the modular hardware are hence extended towards the control.
