The academic library is increasingly moving to majority online collections. As the number of ebooks increase due to the current ebook purchasing model most libraries use, libraries are more likely to be duplicating titles across packages and platforms. Many libraries do not realize how many duplicate titles there are between packages or how duplicate records affect the user experience. The article highlights the method of pursuing e-resources through content aggregators. Topics include types of aggregators available and usage of aggregators by libraries, difficulty to gauge contribution of aggregators to the value of library's total electronic resources holdings due to factors such as instability of the aggregators title lists, and using of overlap analysis to correct duplicate activities in the knowledge base.

Duplicate record detection has been an important issue in the fields of data and records management and various detection methods have been proposed. A new method, which uses an optical character recognition (OCR)-converted source of information for record matching to detect duplicates, is proposed and examined in this paper. First, the design of an experiment for examining the performance of such a duplicate detection method is discussed. The base record set with an OCR-converted title page and its verso were prepared along with two test record sets from different union catalogues, and duplicate records between the base record set and the test sets were manually identified. A duplicate detection system was developed to execute matching (1) between records, (2) between a record and an OCR-converted source of information and (3) using a combination of these. Second, matching performance at the individual data element level is examined. Third, the performance of duplicate record detection based on matching at the element level is examined through rule-based detection and machine learning-based detection. The issue in academic libraries of format duplication for the same title in print, microfilm, and electronic formats continues to strain library budgets, facilities, and staff. This article reviews the criteria used by a medium-sized academic library for deciding what formats of the New York Times to continue to collect and maintain. A research study was conducted to ascertain the completeness of coverage in both the online and microfilm formats of this title, with the results used as additional decision criteria. A survey of New Zealand university and polytechnic libraries indicates what proportions of library e-journal holdings have archival rights or perpetual access clauses. The author then analyzes licenses from three universities for terms, permissions, and other details. The research indicates that less than 20% of the online holdings for most New Zealand educational libraries had a print duplicate, archive, or perpetual access right. Licenses failed to address these access and rights issues in 70% of the cases surveyed. The issues of long-term access to licensed materials are addressed in less than 30% of licenses and only by providers that are offering them. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

In 2002 the Library of Congress initiated the Web Duplicate Materials Exchange Program (Web DMEP) to centralize, streamline, and improve reciprocity in the Library's exchange relations with approximately 2,600 of its partners. In this project it is shown that under certain conditions the checking for duplicates while loading bibliographic data into an online catalog can be replaced by a statistical estimation. Due to the selected significance level (of 90%) and tolerance bounds (10%) the minimum of the needed sample size is calculated, chosen from the population at random and verified by hand. The ever-growing volumes of textual information from various sources have fostered the development of digital libraries, making digital content readily accessible but also easy for malicious users to plagiarize, thus giving rise tosecurityproblems. In this paper, we introduce aduplicate detectionscheme that is able to determine, with a particularly high accuracy, the degree to which one document is similar to another. Our pairwise document comparison scheme detects the resemblance between the content of documents by considering document chunks, representing contexts of words selected from the text. The resulting duplicate detection technique presents a good level of security in the protection of intellectual property while improving the availability of the data stored in the digital library and the correctness of the search results. Aggregator packages have become increasingly important to library collections in recent years. This study investigates how these packages have affected the collection management process in academic libraries. Among the aspects considered are the role of consortia, how aggregator packages have changed the role of the collection manager and selectors, and how they have influenced collections and how collections are used. The article discusses the concept of "sameness" in library science. The author gives the example of sameness as determining when the same text is represented in two documents. Library cataloging is defined as the identification of works from the metadata record and the identification of sameness. The use of the OCLC's (Online Computer Library Center) database is discussed and compares OCLC to Google searching. The concept of sameness in bibliographic databases and the availability of individual articles are also discussed, including various editions and re-printings.

The article reflects on the report made by a discussion group about the duplicate record detection and resolution in the online environment of cataloging. The discussion gave focus on the causes of duplicate records in the online environment from different perspectives. The automation of library systems caused more and more varieties of duplicate records from different sources. Strategies and techniques for record detection and resolution were discussed. Furthermore, the discussion encouraged vendors to develop their system capability to detect duplicates with higher efficiency.
