This article reports on one university's experiment in resurrecting and reanimating the composition lecture, a one-hundred-plus student section dubbed "MonsterComp," including the process, outcomes, and lessons learned. Although this restructuring of the first-year composition course was partially motivated by administrative pressures, the main motivation behind this experiment was to enhance teacher training and support while still retaining the workshop environment and low student-to-instructor ratio of traditional composition sections. The course involves multiple stakeholders, including the WPA and graduate student program coordinators, graduate student instructors, and course-based coaches from our university's writing center. Assessment of student work, observations of the course, and surveys administered to stakeholders indicate that the course was successful in terms of teacher training and preserving student learning outcomes. Victim-offender mediation in Denmark: or how institutional placement and organisation matter In this article, the current state of the Danish police-based victim-offender mediation (VOM) programme is examined against the background of the Norwegian Mediation Service (NMS). In the two similar national languages both are called Konfliktråd, and the Danish programme – which was launched in 2010 – is named after and clearly inspired by the Norwegian service. Yet they differ in terms of organisational structure, capacity and use. Despite similar population size, the NMS completes around 12 times as many meetings as the Danish VOM programme. Furthermore, since 2016 the average number of meetings completed per year by the Danish programme has dropped significantly. In the article, I examine how the development of the Danish VOM programme has seemingly been held back by its placement in the police and also by a lack of clear prioritisation by management, political support and legal status. The VOM secretariat and local VOM coordinators attempt to mitigate the negative effects of these factors. Yet the framework of the Danish VOM programme seems to continue hindering the emulation of the Norwegian service in terms of capacity and use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As intelligence co-ordinator for the Cromwellian Protectorate, John Thurloe was responsible for securing the new regime against a number of different threats, including Royalist plots and potential uprisings. Through a scholarly rereading of the Thurloe State Papers, this article provides new insights into Thurloe's intelligence work, and reflects critically on the impact of modern intelligence studies on early modern history. Investigation of the constraints on early modern intelligence, in terms of money, manpower, relationship to the legal system, and legitimacy, reveals how Thurloe actively sought to circumvent limitations, or to turn some of these to his advantage. Analysis of Thurloe's defence of the ports against the passage of Royalist agents and invasion, an area where he has traditionally attracted criticism, shows a far more sophisticated strategy at work, including his exploitation of security weaknesses to gather more intelligence and disrupting actively a significant number of potential invasion plans. The Ohio University Libraries has been a part of the university's Freshman Year Experience (FYE) classes almost since their inception. Over the past ten years, we have tried many variations on the “library day” lesson plan, with various (low) success rates. For fall of 2010, the FYE coordinator asked for an extremely simple plan: just some videos about services and a walk through the library. It was well-timed; we were both frustrated with the low use of our lesson plans and getting better at video production. It seemed it would be so easy … and then, of course it wasn't. We were saved by collaborating with a film student, and one of our videos was awarded an ALA 2011 PR “Best of Show”. This article explores the perceptions and experiences of the professionals about integrational and academic programs for newly arrived minority language pupils in elementary reception classes in two Norwegian municipalities: Oslo and Trondheim. The data were collected through interviews, field conversations, and available relevant documents. The head teachers, subject coordinators, and reception teachers were interviewed. Framed by activity theory, the article offers a combinative analysis of all aspects of the reception classes. The findings reveal the complex layers of challenges built into the process of integrational and academic programs for newly arrived migrant pupils in the reception classes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In Circles of Support and Accountability (CoSA), trained volunteers support an individual convicted for sexual offenses to reintegrate safely into the community. Developed in Canada, CoSA has been established in many jurisdictions with a growing number of volunteers; however, little is known about whether the training and support provided meets volunteer needs. Using a mixed-methods approach, the aim of the present research was to explore New Zealand CoSA volunteer experiences of the training and support they received and their perceptions about what contributed to the effective operation of a circle. In total, 18 volunteers took part in an interview and 23 volunteers completed a questionnaire. The findings found a mixed response to the training and support received, whereby some volunteers thought the training and support was adequate, whereas other felt the training support they received was inadequate. Findings also illustrate that adequate training, having access to a circle coordinator, selecting the right volunteers and core member, clear communication, and setting up boundaries were important factors in maintaining an effective circle. Findings are discussed in terms of implications for the training and support offered to current and future volunteers, as well as for maintaining the effectiveness of future circles. This article forms part of a Masters Inclusive Education research project. Whilst most inclusive research focuses on a marginalised group, my research participants would not normally be deemed marginalised. Nevertheless, they have a pivotal role within the English mainstream education system to promote inclusive practice, improving outcomes for the most vulnerable young people. For this reason, I intend to explore the role of three Special Educational Needs Co‐ordinators (SENCOs) post 2015 reforms and firmly believe this is fundamentally inclusive research. In this paper, the localization and circumnavigation problem of an unknown stationary target is investigated. Unlike most existing results in which single agent is considered in two-dimensional (2D) space, in this paper multiple agents circumnavigating the target in three-dimensional (3D) space is addressed. Thus, new algorithms are needed to drive multiple non-coplanar agents to the same plane, and the coordination among the agents is also involved here. In addition, the agents measure only the bearing information to the target and each agent does not necessarily know the global normal vector of the objective orbit. An estimator is first established to localize the unknown position of the target and the control protocols are then designed to achieve the 3D circumnavigation of the target. Furthermore, the coordinators for the case with and without global orientation are designed, subsequently, the uniform circumnavigation and even circumnavigation are, respectively, achieved. The contribution made by V.V. Beloussov (1907-1990), an outstanding Earth scientist in the former Soviet Union and Russia, to the development of planetary geophysics is considered. Beloussov was a brilliant coordinator of international cooperation and direct inspirer of international scientific programs of paramount importance. He took up one of the key positions in organizing and holding the International Geophysical Year (IGY) in 1957-1958. In 1960, Beloussov was elected President of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics and proposed the project “The upper mantle and its influence on the Earth’s crust,” which subsequently became known worldwide as the Upper Mantle Project. The project underlined that the experience of the IGY should be extended to studies of the deep structure of the Earth and the processes taking place in the Earth’s interior. The fulfillment of this and the subsequent Geodynamic project resulted in a breakthrough in the knowledge about the deep structure of the Earth, particularly the structure of the oceans. Beloussov actively advocated integrating science of the Earth, geonomy, and in his scientific research sought a geonomic approach incorporating the entire complex of geological, geophysical, and geochemical data. Abstract: Group coordinators are part of a highly influential circle of members of the European Parliament (MEPs). However, there is only scant knowledge about the powers and purpose of this position. This article draws upon theories of legislative organization and committee assignments to assess the question: What individual qualities determine the selection of group coordinators? Using a novel dataset of all MEPs elected to the 8th session of the European Parliament (EP), we consider various aspects of MEP professional background, experience in the chamber and interest group ties as potential predictors of this selection. Our findings indicate the particularly strong effect of incumbency in the committee system, as well as professional background for selection. Ultimately, the results bear relevance to the legislative organization of the EP as a legislature with both strong committees and strong parties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Pulmonary Hypertension Care Center (PHCC) initiative began accrediting Centers of Comprehensive Care (CCC) in 2014, and Regional Clinical Programs (RCP) as part of a pilot program in 2017, in an effort to improve access to quality pulmonary hypertension (PH) care for patients throughout the United States. The purpose of this column is to present a roadmap to accreditation for PH coordinators and their PH teams. We will highlight the essential role that PH coordinators play in navigating all phases of the accreditation process. Figure 1 represents a recommended approach to the PHCC accreditation process. This article identified network characteristics critical for successful agricutural innovations within networks, or a set of interrelated organizations aiming at knowledge exchange for innovations. To explore key success factors, the research questioned how networks cope with innovation characteristics and combined network characteristics with four innovation characteristics in four agricultural sub-sectors. Data were collected from in-depth interviews with farmers and network coordinators and from focus group discussions with farmers active in Flanders, the northern part of Belgium. Factors particularly helpful for success in agricultural innovation networks include numerous contacts, integration of knowledge providers in the network structure, face-to-face communication, a self-initiated coalition and surpassing innovation beyond the mere agricultural level, through collaboration with people from outside the sector. Parenting coordination (PC) has been in use since the mid‐1980s, but research on its effectiveness is sorely lacking. We review the extant research organized by three themes: (1) parenting coordinators’ perceptions of their role and function; (2) professionals’ and parents’ views and perceptions of PC; and (3) outcomes of PC, including some measures of effectiveness of the PC process. While these studies provide some insight into PC effectiveness, there is still a lack of research that uses objective outcome measures of efficacy and that considers characteristics of the co‐parent dyad, personality difficulties, or the professional discipline of the parenting coordinator. Urban planners have long recognized that collaborative planning processes can lead to more equitable development outcomes. Despite this recognition, calls for greater inclusion, community self-determination, and equitable decision making appear louder than ever before. This study combines narrative and dialogic analysis to examine the transformative impacts and limits of the Planning Free School of Chattanooga, an experimental collaborative planning initiative launched in Chattanooga, Tennessee, to engage historically underrepresented and marginalized residents in local planning conversations and decision making. The Planning Free School model was rooted in anarchistic principles of horizontal, learner-driven engagement, critical self-reflection, capacity building, and antiracist praxis. Over 5 months, 52 workshops, organized as issue-based discussion groups, critical conversations, transformative place-making sessions, and skill shares, were conducted as part of the initiative. The study contends that the planning free school model may hold promise as a collaborative planning model for 4 reasons: (a) its independent, horizontal structure may attract participants who distrusted city staff; (b) the creative, nontraditional format of workshops can help participants reckon with local legacies of violence, exclusion, and uneven development; (c) it can support capacity building through a learner-driven, do-it-yourself curriculum; and (d) its flexibility and radical openness can allow participants to improvise and adapt to evolving political situations. We investigated changes in district science coordinators’ understandings and practices following their participation in a statewide professional development (PD). Participants included 13 male and 34 female science coordinators from 42 different school districts in Virginia. Data included presurvey, postsurvey, and delayed postsurvey responses; follow-up interviews; and observations of the PD and of science coordinators at work in their district. Results indicated that science coordinator understandings about pedagogy and job responsibilities changed following the PD and were aligned with the goals of PD. However, coordinators’ practices following PD did not fully reflect their understandings about pedagogy. Results suggest that PD aligned with a situated learning framework, specifically the components of collaboration and authentic context, supports coordinators in changing their understandings and some of their practices. Many individuals, such as persons with spinal cord injury (SCI), rely on wheeled locomotion involving manual (MWC) or power (PWC) wheelchairs to navigate their environments. Yet, visuo-locomotor control underlying WC navigation in experienced users is not well understood. The objective of this study was to compare the visuo-locomotor control between MWC and PWC in individuals with SCI while changing direction and circumventing an obstacle. Participants with SCI using a MWC ( n = 12, 38.5 ± 10.7 years) or a PWC ( n = 10, 47.8 ± 8.6 years) were asked to maneuver their chair straight ahead, while changing direction 45° to the right, and while circumventing an obstacle to the right, all at self-selected speeds. Speed, minimal clearance, point of deviation, temporal body and WC coordination, relative timing of segment rotations and visual behavior were analyzed. There was no main effect of group for speed, clearance and point of deviation. During direction change, the head always led body and wheelchair reorientation while an 'en bloc' strategy was used for circumventing obstacle for both groups. In straight-ahead locomotion, participants predominantly fixed their gaze on the end target. During direction change and obstacle circumvention, participants fixated more on the future path and the obstacle for both WC modes. Overall, specific gaze behavior depended on environmental demands. While MWC and PWC users adopt similar navigational strategies and visuo-locomotor coordination while changing direction and circumventing obstacle, there were some differences in the amount of head rotation that could be related to a counter-movement used more by PWC users. This study explored the professional responsibilities of district science coordinators, their professional development (PD) experiences, the relationship between their role, responsibilities, district context, and background, and barriers encountered in their work. A national sample ( n = 122) of self-identified science coordinators completed a Science Coordinator Role Survey. Participants' responses were analyzed using descriptive and correlational statistics. Following analysis of survey data, 16 participants (13.1%) were purposefully selected for semi-structured follow-up interviews. Results indicated the majority of respondents identified themselves as Caucasian, female, and had served in their position for less than 10 years. The typical science coordinator held a degree in a science content area and was a former science teacher. Respondents without science degrees tended to hold positions at small, remote, or rural school districts with responsibilities in multiple content areas. Participants also reported barriers of not having enough PD opportunities, lack of time, lack of emphasis on science instruction, and a lack of power to enforce policies within a district. Systems thinking is a holistic approach that puts the study of wholes before that of parts. This study explores systems thinking among school middle leaders – teachers who have management responsibility for a team of teachers or for an aspect of the school’s work. Interviews were held with 93 school coordinators, among them year heads, heads of departments, evaluation coordinators, instruction coordinators, and information and communications technology coordinators. Data analysis revealed that systems thinking among school middle leaders consists of four characteristics: (1) seeing wholes; (2) using a multidimensional view; (3) influencing indirectly; and (4) assessing significance. A rare document – probably the single copy still preserved – is presented herein: Augustin Vancea’s bachelor’s thesis corrected by his coordinator, Prof. Ion Popescu-Voitești. It is a thesis defended in 20th inter-wars time, the coordinator and the student being both nowadays outstanding personalities, sharing merits in the Romanian petroleum geology. The handwritten marginal notes are valuable, showing the professor’s various viewpoints related to petroleum geology, more exactly to the natural gas pools in Romania or worldwide. His exigency is obvious, as well as his will to share his geological knowledge with younger disciples. The thesis is rather an account than an original contribution, but we know that it was in fact an exercise for Vancea’s next professional step - his Ph. D. thesis, coordinated by the same professor. In modern and well-structured universities, ethics centers are playing a key role in hosting, organizing, and managing activities to enrich and guide students’ ethical thinking and analysis. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of the goals, activities, and administration of ethics centers, as well as their role in promoting ethical thinking for academic, career, and business purposes. The paper also gives an overview of the most common activities organized by these hubs in order to highlight their contributions to pedagogy, student learning and intellectual growth, research development, and community service. This study is based on an intensive review conducted on seventy-five ethics centers established in universities and colleges around the globe. First, it provides administrations of academic institutions with the basic knowledge needed to plan for potential new ethics centers. They can benefit from the present expertise of described ethics centers and project the practical methodologies on their university needs. In addition, directors and coordinators of established ethics centers would enhance their experience by including new activities and collaborations to their plans. Finally, ethics course instructors can benefit from the listed activities to increase student involvement by including practical methods and discussions beyond the classroom. This study investigated the process through which 100 online courses were developed in compliance with a purpose-made rubric designed to bring the courses to a level that would meet requirements of membership in a state authorization reciprocity agreement. The study identified and analyzed common design and pedagogical issues instructors encountered while working with a teaching and learning coordinator who provided training and feedback. Results indicated that writing measurable objectives posed more difficulties than any other aspect of course development. Other issues emanated from content organization, assessment communication, student participation, active learning incorporation, technology integration, and instructor presence. In this interview, Jairnilson Paim, coordinator of the Health Policy Analysis Project in Brazil (2003-2017) and of the Political Analysis in Health's Observatory (OAPS), supported by CNPq, highlights the OAPS's purposes in socializing the knowledge produced in research and to stimulate the political analysis in health from facts in the conjuncture. He reports that the Observatory has three layers, one consisting of 11 research axes, another showing the specific policies accompanying and the most visible that disseminates news and analysis of the conjuncture. It emphasizes a positive appreciation of the OAPS experience, highlighting the theoretical-methodological rigor and the search for evidence with the greatest possible objectivity, although inspired by democratic and emancipatory values for Brazilian society. Like most management ideologies, New Public Management, is paradoxical in practice. In the case of universities, New Public Sector Management (NPM) practices have led to a core academic workforce that is tightly controlled in conjunction with a peripheral workforce of casual academics paid on hourly contracts. We examine this paradox through the experiences of academic managers responsible for casual academic employment at an Australian university. The line management of casual academics is informally delegated to subject coordinators. We conclude that the management of casual academics not only highlights the contradictions between efficiency and effectiveness in NPM practices, but, given the increased reliance on casual academics, also threatens the future of tenured academics and the ‘idea of a university’.
