The training of teachers of the natural cycle in the context of the modernization of professional activity involves the formation of the professional competence of teachers, their ability to work effectively in solving complex professional situations in the conditions of dynamic changes both in the world of technology and in public life. The concept of astronomical education involves the acquisition of astronomical knowledge, assimilation of astronomical culture; formation of a complete personality, its spirituality, creative individuality, development of intellectual and emotional potential. The article examines the essence of professional competences of modern astronomy teachers, proposes a model of professional competence of teachers of higher educational institutions and analyzes its structural components. The composition and content of the qualification of astronomy teachers of higher education institutions is determined by the provisions of the competency approach, requirements for applicants for the positions of teachers of higher education institutions of III-IV accreditation level and qualification characteristics of the teaching staff of higher education institutions (Hryshchenko & Nizhehorodtsev, 2011).
