A keyword reflects the subject matter of a journal article that is chosen by its author(s). The selection of keywords by researchers in their works is crucial to disseminating knowledge, increasing publication citations, and advancing a science career. We examined keywords chosen in the titles and keyword sections of the archaeornithology literature generated by past meetings of the Bird Working Group (BWG), International Council for Archaeozoology. We report our results to (1) identify keywords that have been shared across authors, (2) make suggestions to improve showcasing researchers' works, and (3) heighten the importance of keyword choice. Additionally, we propose that the BWG and its members consider recommending a keyword scheme for use in future publications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An essay is presented which discusses the significant obstacles encountered by the author in getting his U.S.-published book "Crafting Traditions: The Making and Marketing of Oaxacan Wood Carvings" translated and published in Spanish in Mexico. In 2010, a rapidly growing body of public scholars continued to conduct engaged research that involved various forms of collaboration, advocacy, and activism. Practicing anthropologists are among the most powerful champions of engaged scholarship and are increasingly focused on tracing the concrete dimensions of public engagement. Practicing anthropologists in 2010 made a concerted effort to critically assess precisely what constitutes collaboration, engagement, activism, advocacy, and a host of similarly politicized but ambiguous terms. This self-reflection has probed the philosophical, political, and methodological dimensions of engagement and painted a rich and complex picture of practicing anthropology. In this article, I review those 2010 studies that are focused on critically defining an engaged anthropology and expanding it to rigorously four-field public scholarship with conscious and reflective politics. The breadth and reach of practicing anthropologists in 2009 suggests that anthropology has entered a new phase of advanced engagement at local, national, and international levels. In this article, I review thematic areas in which practicing anthropologists made significant contributions in 2009, including fiscal crisis and business anthropology; U.S. race relations, civil rights, and policy reforms; human rights, environmental change, and displacement; global health and human rights; and war and peace. New areas of expansion are also discussed in the arenas of public archaeology, museums and heritage, and engaged scholarship. The public record of Major Stephen H. Long's 1819–1820 exploration of the American north-west, Account of an expedition from Pittsburgh to the Rocky Mountains, compiled by Edwin James, contains valuable contributions regarding the natural landscapes, native peoples and wildlife of a mostly unexplored region of the American west compiled from the notes of some of America's foremost naturalists, and it includes the first descriptions of 67 new species. The original plan was to publish the Account in Philadelphia and London simultaneously, yet these two editions differ substantially in ways that are relevant to the taxonomic contributions in the work. It is generally assumed that the Philadelphia edition was published in early January 1823 and was available first, but little substantive evidence has been presented to support its priority over the London edition. Review of contemporary correspondence and periodicals indicates the Philadelphia edition was available and for sale on 31 December 1822, whereas the London edition was available in late February 1823. As previously assumed by most sources, the Philadelphia edition has priority of publication and is the authority for most species names. A review of published literature, conference proceedings, and Internet sources pertaining to “Americanist archaeology” in 2008 reveals three major themes: conflict, catastrophe, and collaboration. Scholars debated the role of archaeology in planning for and executing military operations in the Middle East while maintaining a vigorous interest in structural and physical violence worldwide. Environmental archaeologists considered the effects of catastrophic events, including new theories over the demise of Clovis cultures. In addition, several major reports and regulations highlighted the complexities of indigenous relations and gender equity in the profession. Enhanced technologies, funding for global initiatives in human rights, economic and environmental sustainablility, and creative forms of engagement are reshaping “Americanist archaeology” as a democratic, anthropological, and relevant pursuit. In this article the author discusses the fate of ethnographic monographs. She wonders if the status of ethnographic monograph is in transition or declining in terms of its publishing, editing, writing, or reading. She comments on the views of Don Handleman, Marion Berghahn, and Helena Wulf regarding the factors that drive change or decline in ethnographic monograph. She argues that electronic publishing is one reason why publishing of ethnographic monograph is changing.

The author reflects on the publishing status of anthropology monographs. He points out that publishers turned away from anthropological monographs because of unsure sales due to the link between academic journals and academic and publishing fields which operate in a prestige system. He suggests that anthropologists must promote their works and that European Association of Social Anthropologists (EASA) must consider establishing an electronic book database of monographs to end the problem.

The article examines the impact of placing of anthropological resources on the Internet and its challenges for future development. The author cites an overview of the Internet operations and reviews some networked anthropological resources including "The World Journal of Anthropology," "Theoretical Anthropology," and the Oxford University's web site. The author inferred that Internet expansion will not have a predetermined of straightforward impact on the social order and cultural values of academia. Moreover, three models of equal probability can be projected on this. One predicts a narrowing of chances and improved control by cultural and social elites. Second, it promises an elimination of traditional academic barriers and structures, and third, warns a confusing system.

Anthropology in Canada is about to undergo an unprecedented turnover in department personnel and by way of review, this special issue presents articles on major themes in anthropology in Canada during the last decade. They include First Nations research, a foundational subject for anglophone anthropology in Canada; the changing face of ethnographic research, with Newfoundland as an example; work, globalization and local culture; some practical difficulties of research in the field of social justice; and issues inherent in creating an environmental perspective within medical anthropology When each theme is examined it becomes apparent that in spite of a "relentless drive" toward narrowness of interpretation that has afflicted some social sciences in Canada, the departing generation of anthropologists has maintained a relatively open, "holistic" approach to their subject matter. They have done so by confronting dilemmas inherent in undertaking locale-based qualitative research on issues of national or global scale and redefining the scope of anthropological interpretation. While the subject matter developed here is confined to anglophone anthropology in Canada, this introduction argues that its counterpart can be found in francophone anthropology as well. The article discusses the works published in book form about anthropological research on Mesoamerica within the decade 1967-1977. It provides a quantity of available matenal evidences the discipline's continued interest in the peoples of Mesoamerica. It focuses on publications that studied change and persistence including "Incidents of Travel in Central America, Chiapas, and Yucatan," by John Lloyd Stevens. Furthermore, it also discusses the anthropologists' interest in the study of indigenous value systems, community ethos, and their relation to community and individual behavior. Meanwhile, the increase in urban studies and the need for analytic studies of the genre of community study and of the results of community study research in Mesoamerica was also cited.

The current situation of the book publishing in Anthropology can be determined by a study commissioned by the Association of American University Presses in 1988. Despite the fragmentation of the field and the lack of anthropologists and students, book publishing in anthropology has remained healthy.
