The construction of new private suburban houses at the Pieriga (the suburban zone surrounding the capital city of Riga) that was affected by the land market created building territories that do not have a common planning or infrastructure. The suburbanization process of Pieriga took place on the territories of agriculture, former gardening societies and partly at the forests. By creating the building territories that lacked an architectonic or a social conception, it was forgotten that the transformation of the land includes not only the visual changes but also the changes of lifestyles. Because of the growth of the number of the inhabitants in Pieriga, the commuting to Riga and to other cities is also increasing. A quantitative research work shows that in Latvia Pieriga is a desired place of residence. The life in the suburb has become a form of the consumption of the status that is still built on the hopes of and upward mobility.

Arch��ologischer Anzeiger, 1. Halbband 2017, Seit 2014 werden im Rahmen eines deutsch-ukrainischen Kooperationsprojektes in der Vorstadt der milesischen Kolonie Olbia Pontike interdisziplin��re Forschungen durchgef��hrt. Aufbauend auf den Ausgrabungen Ju. I. Kozubs aus den 1960er- und 1970er-Jahren, die zahlreiche Grubenstrukturen mit Wohn- und Wirtschaftsfunktionen des 5. Jhs. v. Chr. zutage brachten, ist es das Ziel der neuen Untersuchungen, Fragen zu der Genese und den Dimensionen des Vorstadtareals zu beantworten. Erste geomagnetische Prospektionen zeichnen dabei ein vielversprechendes Bild f��r eine zuk��nftige Rekonstruktion der besiedelten Fl��che. Arch��ologische Ausgrabungen belegen Grubenbauten der sp��tarchaischen Zeit sowie oberirdische Strukturen des 5. Jhs. v. Chr. und offenbaren ein z. T. au��ergew��hnliches Fundspektrum, wodurch das bislang vorherrschende Bild einer unstrukturierten Ansammlung primitiver Wohnbehausungen schon jetzt in vielen Aspekten aktualisiert werden muss. Arch��ometrische Keramikanalysen zur Frage des Beginns einer lokalen Produktion in Olbia komplettieren im Rahmen einer Pilotstudie die bisherigen T��tigkeiten des internationalen Forschungsprojektes, dessen grundlegende Ergebnisse in diesem Vorbericht erstmals zusammenfassend vorgelegt werden.

404. Dublin's lodger phenomenon in the early twentieth century

Lodging and boarding were well established housing options which played an important economic and social role in early twentieth century cities, yet there has been little academic study of the phenomenon in an Irish context. For many people arriving to Dublin in search of work, as well as for adults who were not in a position to establish a separate household, lodging was an important accommodation choice. Offering lodgings was also economically beneficial to householders. Drawing on a range of sources, including census returns, city electoral rolls, newspaper and other archival sources, the demographic and socio-economic profile of lodgers and the households in which they resided is examined. A wide variety of arrangements and durations of lodging is revealed for the period centred on the 1911 census, suggesting that this form of accommodation appealed to a diverse range of individuals due to their economic or family circumstances, or need for mobility.

Landscape services are inevitably interlinked with human wellbeing. It is essential to assess landscape services and multifunctionality from both supply and demand points of view toward sustainable landscape management. This study focused on the spatiotemporal variations of the supply, demand, and budget of landscape services in suburban Shanghai, China, including crop production, nutrient regulation, air-quality regulation, soil-erosion regulation, water purification, and recreation and aesthetical value. A new index landscape multifunctionality budget (BMFI) was developed, integrating the budget status of surplus and deficit with landscape management. Spatial autocorrelation analysis and regression analysis were conducted to identify spatial agglomeration and influencing factors of BMFI. Pronounced spatiotemporal heterogeneity of landscape services was observed. BMFI was in surplus status in 2005 and 2010, but turned to deficit in 2015. Landscape service budgets generally followed the spatial pattern of positive in the west and negative in the east. Budget deficits covered half of the villages in 2015, which were mainly situated near central Shanghai with high population density, high average income, and a fragmented and less diverse landscape pattern. Rapid urban sprawl and the following land-cover changes are the main drivers for the spatiotemporal variations. Landscape function zoning with effective economic development and ecological conservation policies can comprehensively improve the competitiveness achieving sustainable future. O presente artigo tem como objetivo principal contribuir com o debate acerca da formação das periferias no Brasil e seus desdobramentos, aproximando-o do contexto da cidade de Palmas, capital do Tocantins e com ênfase na atuação dos movimentos de luta pela moradia, entendidos enquanto sujeitos políticos periféricos. Apresenta-se, inicialmente, um compêndio de conceitos e dimensões analíticas que se entende como chave para a intepretação da periferização na cidade contemporânea, seguido pela apresentação de um breve panorama acerca da criação da cidade de Palmas e a instantaneidade da sua periferia. Como ponto de chegada, propõe-se uma interpretação dos principais aspectos que fundamentam a predominância e persistência do modelo de urbanização excludente sob o qual a mesma se constrói, tomando como base discursos encontrados em trabalho de campo e entrevistas realizadas com diferentes agentes da produção do espaço urbano, incluindo representantes de movimentos de luta por moradia locais, sujeitos de conflitos urbanos envolvendo as zonas periféricas da cidade. The main objective of this article is to contribute to the discussion about the formation of suburbs in Brazil and its unfolding, bringing it closer to the context of Palmas city, capital of Tocantins, with an emphasis on the movements of the struggle for housing understood as subjects peripheral politicians. A compendium of analytical concepts and dimensions is presented, which is understood as key to the interpretation of the periphery in the contemporary city, followed by the presentation of a brief viewpoint about the creation of the Palmas city and the instantaneity of its periphery. As an arrival point, it is proposed an interpretation of the main aspects that underlie the predominance and persistence of the model of exclusionary urbanization under which it is constructed, based on the discourses found in field work and interviews with different agents of the production of the urban space, including representatives of local struggles for housing, subjects of urban conflicts involving the suburbs of the city.

Resumo O "subúrbio carioca" possui delimitação territorial bastante consensual na produção acadêmica, que faz referência a um conjunto de bairros atravessados pelas linhas de trem, simbolicamente distante do que seria o "centro" da cidade e indexado à pobreza, subalternidade e classes populares. No campo das representações, entretanto, os pesquisadores mobilizam uma multiplicidade de olhares e afetos em torno da categoria, fazendo com que os conteúdos e formas de suas textualizações se apresentem variados. Este artigo discute os usos e deslocamentos da noção de subúrbio carioca nas ciências sociais, com foco especial na produção etnográfica. Sua análise ressalta a elaboração de escritas alegóricas sobre esse espaço do Rio de Janeiro, que permitem tanto descrever eventos como realizar afirmações culturais ou mesmo ideológicas, constituindo narrativas que buscam desestabilizar as fronteiras físicas e simbólicas da cidade. Abstract The "carioca suburb" has consensual territorial delimitations in academic works, referring to a set of neighbourhoods crossed by train lines, symbolically distant from what would be the "centre" of the city and related to poverty, subalternity and working classes. But in what pertains to representations of the suburb, researchers have advanced a multiplicity of views and affects, with the result that the content and form of its textualizations is varied. This article discusses the uses and displacements of the notion of the "carioca suburb" in the social sciences, with special focus on ethnographic studies. This analysis highlights the elaboration of allegorical writings about this space in Rio de Janeiro, which enable both the description of cultural practices and senses and give voice to political, ethical and pedagogical messages of cultural diversity, thereby constituting powerful narratives that seek to destabilize the physical and symbolic boundaries of the city.

In order to do so, it was important to discuss ethical and aesthetic perceptions in the writings of the writer, as well as to address his social and literary context. Subsequently, in the second chapter, the main focus is on the physical conjunctures of the suburb, which sought to understand the generic conception of the suburbs and the different perceptions of the origin of the suburb of Rio de Janeiro by researchers, in order to address the vision of Lima Barreto on the suburb of Rio de Janeiro in its socio-geographical context. At this moment, we find the geographical delimitation of the suburban space and the many criticisms of the state neglect outlined by Lima Barreto. The third chapter deals with the sociability of the suburban people described and analyzed by the writer; that is, it is about reporting the daily life of the suburban based on the behavior, the personality and the morale of the suburban. O presente trabalho objetiva responder duas quest?es principais: como s?o as estruturas f?sicas e a sociabilidade no contexto suburbano carioca no in?cio do s?culo XX em Lima Barreto. Para tanto, antes de adentrar nestas quest?es, se fez importante discutir as percep??es ?tica e est?tica nos escritos de Lima Barreto, al?m de abordar seu contexto social e liter?rio. In addition, the process of decommissioning germination fields, which are underutilized land areas, usually has a protected space within the city. The project aimed to analyze a refunctionalization in the field areas in one of the largest industrial industry in Rio de Janeiro, the surroundings of Avenida Dom Hélder Câmara. We investigated how economic activities and types of contaminants from the INEA on contaminated areas, correlating an activity with the contaminant. The platforms were used in the still existing business areas to determine the locations with the greatest potential for contamination. With regard to real estate launches, between 2008 and 2016, the use of the land applicant was investigated to establish a relationship between an economic activity and past, with the type of contamination that could be found in soil and groundwater. Of the total of 35 real estate projects, 25 are under the old brownfields. From the analysis, the districts of Castilho, Engenho de Dentro and Cachambi concentrated a majority of the launches with the possibility of contamination of soil and groundwater. How was the analysis of potential polluter according to the IPPS methodology of the World Bank for the greatest potential polluter from current industries. Again, the three districts mentioned above and the neighborhood of Manguinhos are a great possibility of contamination. This study indicated the most detailed analysis data for brownfields. The need to disseminate information on area investigations is reinforced. A indústria, ao encerrar sua atividade, tem como produto passivos ambientais. Além destes, o processo de descomissionamento geram brownfields, que são áreas terrenos subutilizados, normalmente pertencentes a um espaço dotado de infraestrutura dentro da cidade. O presente estudo objetivou analisar a refuncionalização nas áreas de brownfield em um dos eixos da segunda expansão industrial do Rio de Janeiro, o entorno da Avenida Dom Hélder Câmara. Foram investigadas as atividades econômicas e os tipos de contaminantes a partir dos relatórios do INEA sobre áreas contaminadas, correlacionando a atividade com o contaminante. Foram feitas análises espaciais nas áreas com indústrias ainda ativas para determinar os locais com maior possibilidade de contaminação. Com relação aos lançamentos imobiliários, entre os anos de 2008 e 2016, foi investigado o uso pretérito do terreno para se estabelecer a relação entre a atividade econômica pretérita, com o tipo de contaminante que poderia ser encontrado no solo ou na água subterrânea. Do total de 35 lançamentos imobiliários, 25 estão sob antigas áreas industriais (brownfields). A partir da análise, os bairros de Del Castilho, Engenho de Dentro e Cachambi concentraram a maior parte dos lançamentos com possibilidade de contaminação do solo e da água subterrânea. Também foi feita análise do potencial poluidor segundo a metodologia IPPS do Banco Mundial para destacar os bairros com maior potencial poluidor a partir das indústrias atuais. Novamente, os três bairros supracitados e os bairros de Inhaúma e Manguinhos apresentaram a maior possibilidade de contaminação. Este estudo indicou os terrenos que necessitam de análises mais detalhadas para se refuncionalizar brownfields. Reforça-se a necessidade de melhorar a divulgação dos dados relativos às investigações nestas áreas.

Cette recherche consiste à apporter un éclairage sur les contextes à l'origine de la prolifération des résidences fermées et sécurisées à Alger et à dégager leurs spécificités. Si l'instabilité politique et le climat d'insécurité qu'a vécus l'Algérie et d'une manière particulière les communes de la périphérie constituant la zone d’expansion urbaine d'Alger, entre les années 1988 et 1997, ont été à l'origine de l'essor de ces communautés fermées, la crise du logement et les importants programmes des promoteurs immobiliers sont à l'origine de leur évolution notable et de leur propagation vers d'autres wilayas de l'Algérie. De nos jours, habiter dans ces résidences de luxe constitue un signe d’appartenance à un certain rang social. Elles sont aujourd’hui souvent critiquées pour être un indice de ségrégation sociale et parfois porteuses de germes de ségrégation résidentielle et de fragmentation urbaine. This research aims primarily to give persuasive highlights on the context causing the proliferation of closed and secure residences, in Algiers-city, and therefore to identify their specific characteristics. The insecurity and the political unrest incurred in Algeria, and in a particular way in Algiers and its suburbs areas, during a decade between 1988 and 1997 were mainly responsible of the development of these gated communities. However, the housing crisis and the important programs of property developers are at the origin of their significant evolution and their spread out to other prefectures of Algeria. Nowadays, living in luxurious residences is a sign of belonging to a certain social rank. Máčal Tomáš - DP. Přicházíme žít. Proměna městysu Nehvizdy po roce 1990 Abstract The diploma thesis explores the environment of the town Nehvizdy. The thesis also examines suburbanization changes after 1990. The current form of the town is formed by the construction of flats and family houses. It results in the development of services. Nehvizdy is geographically close to Prague. It gives the city the potential to continue building. It increases the population. People are looking for affordable housing according to current trends. Nehvizdy, like the village type, changes to "satellite city" type near the metropolis. There is the research goal. The work examines the image of the village in the years after the Velvet Revolution. There have been many changes here. This is an important sociological and historical point of view how the old residents perceive new inhabitants. This is also investigated in the opposite direction - how the new inhabitants see the old residents. Nehvizdy experienced the transformation from the agricultural village to a place full of services in the post-revolutionary years. Here the quality of hospitality, transport service and the possibility of spending free time were changed. Au XIXe siècle les activités alimentaires ont contribué avec d’autres fonctions à façonner la périphérie des villes de l’âge industriel. Abattoirs et marchés sont devenus des monuments dans le cadre d’un urbanisme disciplinaire et hygiéniste. A la fin XXe et au début du XXIe siècles ces mêmes lieux ont perdu leur caractère périphérique pour devenir des éléments d’articulation des centres urbains élargis. Les fonctions de ces édifices ont connu aussi des changements. Les activités de production ou de distribution alimentaire ont été repoussées vers des périphéries plus lointaines et neutres alors que les édifices du XIXe siècle à fonction alimentaire lorsque qu’ils sont survécu ont connu des modifications de signification. Jouant sur leur valeur patrimoniale ils ont été dans certains cas investis de nouvelles fonctions urbaines culturelles, commerciales ou de loisir ; dans d’autres cas, ils ont été affectés à de nouvelles fonctions de nature alimentaire : nouvelles formules de la distribution des denrées combinant le marché traditionnel et le supermarché, la vente des produits bio et des produits du terroir, les lieux de restauration. La mutation n’est donc pas seulement de nature cartographique mais aussi et surtout de signification. Si la fonction de distribution alimentaire réelle ne disparaît pas entièrement de ces lieux, elle cède une grande partie de la place à une culture de la gastronomie comme mythologie contemporaine, tel que Roland Barthes la décrivait. L’évolution de la culture alimentaire dans le monde contemporain est indissociable de la transformation formelle et symbolique de la cité., In the 19th century, food activities, together with many other urban functions, contributed to shaping the suburbs of industrial age cities. Slaughterhouses and markets became some of the main monuments in the new hygienic and disciplinary town planning. Nevertheless, at the end of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century, due to urban expansion, these buildings were no longer suburban elements but an articulated crossroads of the expanding city centres. Although food production or retailing shifted towards distant new suburbs, the historical markets and slaughterhouses were frequently preserved but their significance has changed: some have been invested with cultural, commercial and leisure functions; in other cases the historical buildings remain linked to their original function since they host new food culture trading practices. These buildings have also become the site for a combination of supermarket and traditional food retailing, the sale of sophisticated organic and local products, or restaurants and bars. In these malls the urban function of food supply has not been entirely abandoned but modified to show gastronomic culture as a contemporary mythology, in the sense of Roland Barthes. The evolution of food culture in the contemporary world is inseparable from the formal and symbolic transformation of the city.

As any social phenomenon, the evolution of suburbs can be seen as at the confluence of two contradictory sets of forces. There are first forces of change, which propel suburbs in new directions. Much of the present literature on suburbs highlights suburban transitions in the form of social and economic diversification, and of new forms of development. The article attempts to rebalance the discourse on suburbs by emphasizing forces of durability. It does not deny the importance of observed suburban transitions, but argues that there is, at the heart of North American suburbs, an enduring automobility-induced transportation dynamic, which reverberates on most aspects of suburbs. The article explores the mechanisms undergirding suburban durability by linking the suburban transportation dynamic to the self-reproductive effects of a suburban lifestyle and culture and their political manifestations. These forces impede planning attempts to transform suburbs in ways that make them more environmentally sustainable. To empirically ground its argument, the article draws on two Toronto region case studies illustrating processes assuring the persistence of the durable features of North American suburbs: the layout of large suburban multifunctional centres and the themes raised by Rob Ford during his successful 2010 mayoralty electoral campaign.

The PAU de Vallecas is one of the new neighbourhoods built during the real-estate boom of the early 21st century. The features of this «new suburb» are analysed through its architecture, which is seen as a cultural device that shapes different urban dynamics. The PAU de Vallecas is governed by a twofold rationale. The first is a functionalist morphology associated with the cultural hegemony of modern architecture and the accumulation of financial and real-estate capital. Secondly, it involves innovative-sustainable architectural projects which are linked to the shaping of a Madrid’s image and to inter-city competition for resources. A brief outline is also included of some of the processes that put the «new suburb» concept in perspective. The article concludes that these different architectural rationales constitute two elements of the same urban governance model: urban entrepreneurialism.El PAU de Vallecas es uno de los nuevos barrios creados a principios del siglo XXI en el contexto del boom inmobiliario. Se analizan las características de esta «nueva periferia» desde la perspectiva de su arquitectura, entendiendo esta como un dispositivo cultural en el que cristalizan diversas dinámicas urbanas. En el PAU de Vallecas coexiste una doble lógica. Primero, una morfología funcionalista asociada a la hegemonía cultural de la arquitectura moderna y a la acumulación de capital financiero-inmobiliario. Segundo, proyectos arquitectónicos innovadoressostenibles vinculados a la elaboración de una imagen de Madrid y a la competencia interurbana por la atracción de recursos. Además, se hace un pequeño esbozo de algunos procesos que relativizan la idea de una nueva periferia. Se concluirá planteando que estas dos lógicas arquitectónicas diferenciadas constituyen dos elementos de un mismo modelo de gobierno urbano: el empresarialismo urbano.

En este artículo se proponen pautas en relación a la influencia de lo audiovisual en nuestra percepción de la ciudad, seleccionando para este objetivo algunas películas de Alfred Hitchcock. La relación del cineasta con la ciudad es ambivalente, unas veces muestra la ciudad como fuente de referencias emblemáticas, mientras en otros casos no duda en estigmatizar la ciudad tradicional compacta (centros urbanos tradicionales) y apostar por modelos de urbanismo extensivo (periferias urbanas). Se describe también una nueva forma de turismo urbano, que explota los escenarios que aparecen en las películas como recurso turístico.Abstract. In this paper we propose guidelines regarding the influence of the audiovisual in our perception of the city, selecting for this purpose some of Alfred Hitchcock´s movies. The filmmaker's relationship with the city is ambivalent, sometimes shows the city as a source of symbolic references, while in other cases does not hesitate to stigmatize traditional compact city (downtowns) and go for extensive planning models (suburb). It also describes a new form of urban tourism that exploits the scenarios that appear in movies as a tourism resource.

420. The Environment of Birthplace and Self-Reported Mental Health Conditions: Findings from the American Panel of Life.

- Abstract
Studies from around the globe have found that urbanicity is associated with greater risk for certain psychiatric disorders, though the association has been less evident in the United States. We analyzed data collected in 2019 from the RAND American Life Panel ( n = 2554), which were representative of the general adult population of the United States. Using multivariable logistic regression, we examined the associations between environment of birthplace (large urban, small urban, suburban, rural) and psychiatric disorders, adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics. We found that being born in a large urban area was associated with greater odds of having any psychiatric disorder when compared with being born in a rural area. However, when looking at specific disorders, we found that being born in a large urban area was only significantly associated greater odds of anxiety disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but was not associated with bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, or alcohol/substance use disorder. Being born in a small urban area was marginally associated with anxiety disorder. Future studies should examine why urban birthplace has only been associated with anxiety disorders and PTSD in the United States, and why urbanicity is associated with mood disorders in other parts of the world but not in the United States.

Las condiciones sociales y políticas de los años 50 hicieron que los nuevos planes urbanísticos propiciaran un "controlado" desarrollo urbano que dio lugar a la construcción de numerosas barriadas residenciales. Barriadas que a pesar de las expectativas iniciales terminaron siendo el claro ejemplo de un urbanismo de baja calidad. En la actualidad estos espacios se han convertido en obsoletas piezas urbanas carentes de unos mínimos de habitabilidad y confort y que por su ubicación estratégica, adosadas al centro histórico, se perfilan como sugerentes áreas de oportunidad para conseguir un desarrollo sostenible de la ciudad. El presente estudio analiza el procesos de integración de los arrabales de las antiguas ciudades medievales, en los tejidos urbanos consolidados a partir de la Revolución Industrial, pretendiendo encontrar directrices que hagan posible una analogía entre este modo de integración y la incorporación de las barriadas de los años 50 en la estructura funcional de la ciudad actual. Para ello recurre al estudio de dos ciudades españolas, Valencia y La Coruña. El trabajo se construye apoyándose en dos pilares fundamentales, la historia y el urbanismo. Desde el punto de vista metodológico, a la búsqueda de fuentes pictóricas, cartográficas y bibliográficas se les une el levantamiento de la secuencia histórica que vislumbra la evolución, el desarrollo y la influencia en el tejido urbano de esos elementos., The social and political conditions of the 1950s made the new urban plans conducive to a "controlled" urban development that led to the construction of numerous residential neighborhoods. Slums that despite initial expectations ended up being the clear example of poor quality urbanism. Nowadays these spaces have become obsolete urban pieces lacking a minimum of habitability and comfort and, due to their strategic location, attached to the historic center, are emerging as suggestive areas of opportunity to achieve a sustainable development of the city. The present study analyzes the integration process of the suburbs of the old medieval cities, in the urban fabrics consolidated from the Industrial Revolution, trying to find guidelines that make possible an analogy between this mode of integration and the incorporation of the neighborhoods of the 50 years in the functional structure of the present city. For this purpose, the study of two Spanish cities, Valencia and La Coruña. The work is built on two fundamental pillars, history and urbanism. From the methodological point of view, the search for pictorial, cartographic and bibliographical sources is joined by the historical sequence that sees the evolution, development and influence in the urban fabric of these elements.

Der Artikel behandelt das Phänomen des "Tanktourismus" zunächst aus theoretischer Sicht, wobei die Autoren aus einer wirtschaftswissenschaftlichen Perspektive heraus "Tanktourismus" als Form einer Arbitrage, welche das Ausnutzen einer Preisdifferenz bezeichnet, auffassen. Zudem werden Gründe und Voraussetzungen für das Auftreten des grenzüberschreitenden Arbitragetankens nachgezeichnet, um so den Rahmen für die eigene empirische Untersuchung zu schaffen. Nach der Vorstellung des Untersuchungsraums steht die "Rentabilitätsdistanz" im Mittelpunkt des Interesses. Hierbei zeigt sich u.a., dass es in Abhängigkeit des Grades der Rationalität der "Tanktouristen" (vollständige vs. eingeschränkte) erhebliche Unterschiede gibt, was die räumliche Ausprägung des optional vom "Tanktourismus" betroffenen Gebiets betrifft., The paper starts off with a theoretical debate on the phenomenon of "fuel tourism". The authors - from an economic point of view - see “fuel tourism” as arbitrage in the sense of using an existing price difference. Practical reasons and prerequisites for cross-border fuelling are identified, and the study area is introduced. Against this background the paper focuses on the spatial outcome of profitability, and reveals that the "fuel tourists'" degree of rationality (full vs. limited) heavily influences the spatial outcome of an area potentially affected by "fuel tourism".

Vår rapport bygger på ungdomar bosatta i ett socioekonomiskt utsatt område och deras tankar kring framtiden, deras bostadsområde och andra faktorer som spelar in. Vår förförståelse kring det valda ämnet grundar sig på vår egen uppväxt samt erfarenheter då vi själva är bosatta i ett socioekonomiskt utsatt område. Syftet med studien har varit att få en ökad förståelse samt belysa några ungdomars uppfattningar och tankar om sin framtid samt hur olika faktorer har en påverkan på deras framtidsmöjligheter. Denna studie har utförts med en kvalitativ metod, genom semistrukturerade intervjuer och gruppintervjuer. Deltagarna i denna studie är ungdomar i åldern 18–27 år. Studiens resultat visar att ungdomarna upplever att deras bostadsområde är segregerat och avskilt från samhället. De uppger även att det råder kriminalitet och oroligheter i området. Men trots problematiken trivs de i sitt bostadsområde. Stämpling av samhället, etnicitet och religion är faktorer som ungdomarna uppger kan komma att vara ett hinder för deras framtid., Our report is based on young people living in a socioeconomically exposed area and their thoughts about the future, their residential area and other factors that matters. Our pre-understanding of the chosen subject is based on our own upbringing and experiences as we live in a socio-economically vulnerable area. The purpose of the study has been to gain a better understanding and to highlight some young people's perceptions and thoughts about their future and how different factors influence their future opportunities. This study has been conducted with a qualitative method, through semi-structured interviews and group interviews. The participants in this study are young people aged 18-27 years. The study's results show that the young people find that their residential area is segregated and separated from the rest of the society. They also state that their residential area facing problems with criminality and riots. But despite the problems they see their residential area as their home and they feel secure there. Society labeling, ethnicity and religion are factors that the youths feel may be an obstacle to their future.

424. Rêver à pleine vitesse : l'automobile et l'idéal suburbain dans la région de Montréal entre 1945 et 1970

RÉSUMÉ : Depuis la deuxième moitié du 20e siècle, l’attrait de la banlieue auprès des ménages montréalais ne diminue pas malgré les critiques et les enjeux croissants à son égard (préservation de l’environnement, paupérisation, vieillissement démographique, désuétude du cadre bâti). Les composantes clés qui ont défini l’idéal suburbain – habitat pavillonnaire, famille nucléaire et lien privilégié avec un environnement verdoyant – sont demeurées pratiquement inchangées depuis la période d’après-guerre. Le mémoire vise à mettre en lumière le rôle de l’automobile dans la mise en forme de l’idéal suburbain entre 1945 et 1970 dans la région de Montréal. Plus qu’un simple mode de déplacement, l’automobile participe de différentes façons au développement de cet idéal. Dans un premier temps, l’automobile permet aux ménages d’accéder au milieu de leur choix en périphérie montréalaise. Simultanément, elle a contribué à définir les principales composantes de l’environnement physique suburbain. Dans un deuxième temps, l’automobile participe activement à la caractérisation des principaux traits de cet idéal en les complétant et en allant jusqu’à renouveler les valeurs (bien-être, intimité, plaisir, progrès, sécurité, statut social, union) qu’ils véhiculent. La place qu’occupe l’automobile dans l’idéal suburbain est perceptible dans différents types de banlieues montréalaises comme en témoigne notre étude portant sur les villes de Beaconsfield et de Brossard. Cette recherche permet de situer la place de l’automobile qui contribue à préserver l’intégrité du rêve suburbain et à le renforcer. 426. Between bushfire and climate change: Uncertainty, silence and anticipation following the October 2013 fires in the Blue Mountains, Australia

Based on 18 months of ethnographic research in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales, following the catastrophic October 2013 bushfires, this thesis investigates the local community response to this disaster as they rebuilt their destroyed homes and recovered. The ambiguity and disagreement surrounding the connection between climate change and the bushfires are analysed as a foundational aspect of how climate change was materialising for residents in daily life. Ambivalence, uncertainty, silence and contradiction characterised the public and private discourse about a heating world in this community. This thesis argues that people’s engagement with climate change is an unstable and iterative process in which local culture and context, in this instance the context of disaster, are of central importance. Local frontline workers avoided articulating the ontologically threatening prospect of climate change catastrophe by focusing on a more comprehensible narrative about the prevailing bushfire threat that could be addressed through existing preparedness measures. The lack of shared public narrative that connected local realities with global climate change meant that people continued to relate to it as an abstract and distant phenomenon, even as they confronted its effects in rising insurance premiums, changed building codes, and shifting bushfire seasons. This research contributes to the understanding of a contemporary Western cosmology, that is, to a particular self-world relationship that is implicated in the causes of climate change and that continues to inform local responses to environmental change in Australia. Additionally, this inquiry elucidates the fraught relationship between vulnerability and responsibility for suburban residents in an era of climate change.

Nous terminons sur le désir d’une attention à la beauté en tant que fin et moyen de régénération des lieux, surtout publics, car l’espace qu’on habite influence fortement la conduite sociale des citoyens. The article discusses the theme of the suburbs from the point of view of the architect. This perspective is considered important since the work of the architect and town planner has a significant impact on the welfare of the citizens as the spaces designed and then made, have the responsibility to influence the social behavior of people. This sense of responsibility has characterized the working group G124, coordinated by the architect Renzo Piano in the role of Senator for life from 2013, who has worked with public awareness and critical consciousness on the theme of the peripheries. In particular, it describes the work carried out in the district of Librino, periphery complex of the city of Catania. The plan area of Librino was designed by the Japanese architect Kenzo Tange which had imagined a beautiful and efficient city. Unfortunately this utopia is then transformed into a bitter reality in which live more than 70,000 people without places of aggregation and with poor services. The work done in the district has been intense and in synergy with different professional figures. At the time of the initial, investigation was followed by a listening phase from which is derived a process of involvement that ended with the delivery of the result. It is the treaty of a mending of urban parts of the district and mending social between citizens and the administration. The article concludes with a defense of beauty which is an instrument for a regeneration of the places especially public.

Показана междисциплинарность и плюралистичность теоретического исследования данной проблематики. В статье отмечается, что размышления социологов о сущности и специфике понятия «провинциальный город» имеют давнюю историю, а также перспективы для дальнейшего развития проводимых сегодня научных исследований. Результатом теоретического исследования специфики провинциальных городов России является выявление их своеобразного культурного облика и возможности культурного наследия в рамках изучаемой тематики. Таким образом, рассмотрение провинциального города становится актуальным и интересным объектом исследования., The article considers various versions of interpretation of the concept of “province” and “periphery” in urbanistics. The interdisciplinarity and pluralism of the theoretical research of this problem are shown in the paper. The article notes that sociologists’ reflections on the essence and specificity of the concept of a “provincial town” have a long history, as well as prospects for the further development of the current scientific research. The result of the theoretical study of the specificity of provincial towns in Russia is the identification of their specific cultural appearance and the possibility of cultural heritage within the framework of the subject matter under study. This thesis explores the relationship between urban planning and transport, by studying dedicated bus lanes projects in ten cities of the near Parisian suburb, a territory which has both correct accessibility to the city-centre and real estate opportunities, so that it can constitute a potential of « rebuilding the city over the city ». By studying archival documents, it traces the genesis of these dedicated bus lanes, from propositions, to negotiations, adaptations and deployments, associated with the analysis of the urban evolution of the concerned territories, during 30 years, mainly by using the land-use database from IAU-IDF. By this double approach, the research tries to understand the concept of « Transit Oriented Development » and assesses contrasted strategies of concerned cities toward these types of projects, and highlights the correlation between these strategies and city’s history and the social demographic composition. It also reveals the gap between the stated will and undertaken implementation or achieved results, a difference that may have various causes, but also enables to understand the different efforts that must be made to ensure the coherence between transport projects and urban projects. A dedicated bus lane can be a basis for an action in favour of a « Transit Oriented Development » or lead to a « development oriented transit ». In both cases, we can consider its implementation as a success, according to transport systems criteria, or deem that in the second case, only a part of the project potentialities were achieved, and that it is possible to learn from these experiences to develop the current practices and process; Cette thèse explore la relation entre urbanisme et transport par l’étude de projets de bus en site propre dans dix villes de la proche banlieue parisienne, territoire qui dispose à la fois d’une accessibilité correcte à la ville-centre et d’opportunités foncières susceptibles de constituer un réel potentiel de « reconstruction de la ville sur la ville ». À travers l’étude de documents d’archives, elle retrace la genèse, entre propositions, négociations, adaptations et déploiements de ces projets de transport, et la complète par l’analyse de l’évolution des territoires urbains traversés, sur une période de 30 ans, grâce notamment à l’exploitation de la base de données des Modes d’Occupation des Sols de l’IAU-IDF. En s’appuyant sur cette double démarche, cette thèse tente d’appréhender le concept d’« urbanisme orienté par les transports collectifs » et met en évidence des stratégies contrastées des communes traversées face à l’arrivée de ce type de projet de transport, ainsi que les corrélations qui peuvent exister entre ces stratégies, l’histoire de ces communes et leur composition socio-démographique. Elle révèle également des écarts entre les volontés affichées et les réalisations conduites ou les résultats obtenus, écarts dont les causes peuvent être diverses, mais qui permettent de mieux comprendre les efforts qui restent à conduire dans différents domaines pour mieux assurer la cohérence entre projets transport et projets urbains. Les exemples traités montrent que le projet de bus en site propre peut constituer le socle d’une action en faveur d’un « urbanisme orienté par les transports collectifs » ou n’engendrer qu’un « transport orienté par le développement urbain ». Dans les deux cas, on peut considérer sa réalisation comme une réussite selon les critères de performance du système de transport, ou estimer que dans le second cas, une partie seulement des potentialités du projet ont été réalisées, et qu’il est possible d’en tirer des enseignements pour faire évoluer les pratiques et les dispositifs existants

L’article vise à montrer l’apport d’un livre de Blaise Cendrars, L’Homme foudroyé, à une réflexion générale sur l’expérience humaine de l’espace. Plus largement il propose une approche théorique qui s’appuie sur l’analyse d’œuvres littéraires. Il s’agit, d’une part, de prendre au sérieux le propos théorique d’un écrivain et, d’autre part, de montrer comment l’œuvre littéraire, par sa forme aussi, est un mode de transmission d’un savoir. Après une présentation de l’ouvrage qui sert ici de terrain de recherche, l’auteur conduit une analyse spécifique des Rhapsodies gitanes (dernière partie du livre) et du propos qu’y développe Cendrars sur l’expérience de l’espace en mobilisant deux figures spatiales antinomiques, la route et la banlieue. L’originalité de Cendrars est qu’il construit un espace vécu réticulaire grâce à un travail de décomposition de la chronologie et de la continuité temporelle qu’il désigne sous le terme de « prochronie ». The paper is based on a study, from a social science point of view, of a book of Blaise Cendrars (L’Homme foudroyé) in which this writer develops a theory of the human experience of space. This is also to argue that this method is, in general, fruitful ; it implies considering seriously that writers do take part in theoretical debates and that their œuvre is also a tool for transmission of knowledge. After presenting the book which is here the « field » for research, the author of the paper analyses more specifically the Rhapsodies gitanes (last part of the book). The pioneering modern movement, liturgically centred, church architecture of the mid twentieth century has become increasingly well documented and understood. Yet, for a long time before the Second Vatican Council most architects and clergy rejected this movement, maintaining traditional approaches and architectural forms. The basilican type dominated Roman Catholic church architecture in mid twentieth-century Britain, drawing loosely on Gothic or Byzantine and Romanesque models, and widely built in the new suburbs of expanding cities. As a typical landmark feature of such suburbs, the conventional church demands to be taken seriously and understood. This article draws on recent work on suburban and middle-class culture to interpret a body of such churches by a prolific firm of church architects, Reynolds & Scott of Manchester. It makes use of a hitherto unexplored archive of the practice's drawings, an interview with a surviving partner, parish and diocesan archives, and consideration of many of the buildings. The conventional basilican church can be reassessed through this evidence. It presents a type of creativity and a design approach that differ from the values embraced by modernism, but that nevertheless engage with the modernity of the suburb in a complex hybridity between the modern and traditional, the sacred and the secular, religious and domestic cultures, the particular, the transnational and the universal.

Decodificar este sueño al cual se asocia la casa supone volver a los fundamentos mismos de una cultura de vida que se refiere específicamente a los Estados Unidos y que tiene sus raíces en los primeros asentamientos que se realizaron en las tierras del Nuevo Mundo. Este sueño no ha parado de movilizar la mente de la gente con la esperanza de hacer realidad un mundo ideal donde no exista distinción alguna entre la ciudad, el campo y la naturaleza, a imagen y semejanza del proyecto de desarrollo urbano de Broadacre City de Frank Lloyd Wright, que forma parte de esta larga búsqueda mítica., « The houses and the automobiles are equal figments of a great dream » Reyner Banham (1971) explained in Los Angeles. The Architecture of Four Ecologies, « the dream of the urban homestead, the dream of a good life outside the squalors of the European type of city ». Understanding this dream to which the house is related imply to go back to the very foundations of a culture of life peculiar to the United-States, and whose roots can be founded in the first settlements established on the ground of the New World. This dream has constantly mobilized people’s minds with the hope that this ideal world will be realized one day: a world where no more distinction will be possible between city, country and nature, in the image of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Broadacre City,project being part of this long mythical quest., « Les maisons et les automobiles sont d’égales créations de l’imagination liées à un grand rêve » expliquait Reyner Banham (1971) dans Los Angeles, « le rêve du homestead urbain, […] d’une vie plaisante hors des conditions sordides de la ville de type européen ». Décoder ce rêve auquel est associée la maison suppose que l’on retourne aux fondements même d’une culture de l’habiter spécifique aux États-Unis, qui trouve ses racines dans les premières implantations sur les terres du Nouveau Monde. espanolEste articulo tiene como objetivo mostrar los restos ineditos de un espacio domestico situado en los suburbia de Valentia, a menos de 1 km del pomoerium, de caracteristicas unicas en la ciudad. Se trata de una serie de estancias pavimentadas con mosaicos de opus tessellatum, decorados con motivos geometricos y vegetales bicromos de gran calidad. Destaca la presencia de un peristilo trapezoidal como espacio redistribuidor. En suma, se trata de un interesante ejemplo de arquitectura privada periurbana, cuya situacion responde al desarrollo de los suburbia, poco estudiados en el ambito valenciano. EnglishThis paper aims to show the inedit rests of a suburban domestic space found in Valentia, 1 km from the pomoerium, with unique characteristics in the city. It has a serie of different rooms, paved with mosaics of opus tesellatum decorated with bichromatic geometric and vegetables motives, which show the richness of the owner. There is a trapezoidal peristil with a planter in one of the sides, which confirms the hypothesis of a mediterranean villa. To sum up, it is an interesting example of suburban private architecture. In addition, is one of the first studies in the models of development of the suburbs in valencian territory.

Las condiciones sociales y políticas de los años 50 hicieron que los nuevos planes urbanísticos propiciaran un "controlado" desarrollo urbano que dio lugar a la construcción de numerosas barriadas residenciales. Barriadas que a pesar de las expectativas iniciales terminaron siendo el claro ejemplo de un urbanismo de baja calidad. En la actualidad estos espacios se han convertido en obsoletas piezas urbanas carentes de unos mínimos de habitabilidad y confort y que por su ubicación estratégica, adosadas al centro histórico, se perfilan como sugerentes áreas de oportunidad para conseguir un desarrollo sostenible de la ciudad. El presente estudio analiza el procesos de integración de los arrabales de las antiguas ciudades medievales, en los tejidos urbanos consolidados a partir de la Revolución Industrial, pretendiendo encontrar directrices que hagan posible una analogía entre este modo de integración y la incorporación de las barriadas de los años 50 en la estructura funcional de la ciudad actual. Para ello recurre al estudio de dos ciudades españolas, Valencia y La Coruña. El trabajo se construye apoyándose en dos pilares fundamentales, la historia y el urbanismo. Desde el punto de vista metodológico, a la búsqueda de fuentes pictóricas, cartográficas y bibliográficas se les une el levantamiento de la secuencia histórica que vislumbra la evolución, el desarrollo y la influencia en el tejido urbano de esos elementos. The social and political conditions of the 1950s made the new urban plans conducive to a "controlled" urban development that led to the construction of numerous residential neighborhoods. Slums that despite initial expectations ended up being the clear example of poor quality urbanism. Nowadays these spaces have become obsolete urban pieces lacking a minimum of habitability and comfort and, due to their strategic location, attached to the historic center, are emerging as suggestive areas of opportunity to achieve a sustainable development of the city. The present study analyzes the integration process of the suburbs of the old medieval cities, in the urban fabrics consolidated from the Industrial Revolution, trying to find guidelines that make possible an analogy between this mode of integration and the incorporation of the neighborhoods of the 50 years in the functional structure of the present city. For this purpose, the study of two Spanish cities, Valencia and La Coruña. The work is built on two fundamental pillars, history and urbanism. From the methodological point of view, the search for pictorial, cartographic and bibliographical sources is joined by the historical sequence that sees the evolution, development and influence in the urban fabric of these elements. The present study analyzes the integration process of the suburbs of the old medieval cities, in the urban fabrics consolidated from the Industrial Revolution, trying to find guidelines that make possible an analogy between this mode of integration and the incorporation of the neighborhoods of the 50 years in the functional structure of the present city. For this purpose, the study of two Spanish cities, Valencia and La Coruña. The work is built on two fundamental pillars, history and urbanism. From the methodological point of view, the search for pictorial, cartographic and bibliographical sources is joined by the historical sequence that sees the evolution, development and influence in the urban fabric of these elements. In questo nuovo e complesso orizzonte di azione, si modifica il ruolo che possono assumere le aree periferiche che collocate ai margini delle città-core, ad uno sguardo più ampio possiedono una nuova centralità spaziale e si candidano a giocare un ruolo chiave nel riequilibrio dei pesi insediativi e nella risposta alla sfida della qualità urbana. The paper analyses the transformation dynamics of the south-east corridor of the metropolitan city of Palermo with the aim of contributing to contemporary debate on suburbs in a metropolitan perspective. From the description of the case study analysed, the contribution outlines possible perspectives for the territorial re-balancing of peripheral areas by identifying the overcoming of a concentric hierarchical metropolis and the adherence to more mature post-metropolization processes involving multilevel policies as a tool for generating a polycentric settlement system founded on a shared and participatory vision.

This commentary addresses the evolution of the North American suburb over the last 70 years, a period over which it adopted a development pattern marking a radical break from prior forms of urban settlement. Early in this period, the emerging suburban form constituted perhaps the sharpest transition in the history of urbanism in terms of urban form and transportation. This suburban form rapidly came to dominate North American metropolitan regions and spread to other parts of the world. In this commentary, I propose a brief history of the North American suburb since the late 1940s seen through the lens of the contributions it made to the evolution of urbanism across the continent. I contend that while suburbs are often associated with urban stasis, because perceived as an impediment to the emergence of new environmentally sensitive and socially and functionally integrated urban formulas relying on public transit and walking, they have played a major transformative role in the past and may be the source of further urban transitions in the future. North American suburbs have also undergone deep social changes over the last decades. However, I question the claim, made by some researchers, that we are entering a post-suburban era; but at the same time, I acknowledge the possibility of major future innovations within present suburban configurations.

The gentrification literature, which is originated in the urban context, has now extended to suburb. Using content analysis on previous related case studies, this article shows that suburban gentrification is not necessarily a natural phenomenon resulting from disinvestment as the neighborhood lifecycle approach commonly suggests. As long as there is a development trigger, the suburb can gentrify anytime as it generally has a lower land value and a lower risk than urban area. The private sector and government play a key role in initiating and facilitating it to happen. In suburban context, the impacts of gentrification is complex, entailing varying negative and positive implications for the physical environment, the economies, and the society.

• The healthcare travel behaviors of the elderly are different between core area and suburb in Fuzhou. • The elderly in suburb are more likely to utilize cars to obtain high-quality medical resources. • The service efficiency improvements of hospitals could promote the elderly in core area to choose green modes. • For long-distance travel, the influence of family economic backgrounds on the mode choice is more significant in suburb. • The elderly in core area are more inclined to utilize cars when they live with their offspring. This study investigated the travel characteristics and influential factors of travel mode choice for healthcare activity by the elderly in core area and suburb. The results of descriptive analysis and multinomial logistic models show that: (1) Bus and walking are main modes for the elderly to seek medical treatment. The elderly in suburb travel longer distance and are more dependent on bus than those in core area. (2) The service efficiency improvements of hospitals could promote the elderly in core area to choose green modes, while those in suburb are more likely to utilize cars to obtain high-quality medical resources. (3) For long-distance travel, the influence of family economic backgrounds on the mode choice is more significant in suburb, and the difference of family economic will further aggravate the internal differentiation in long-distance travel among the elderly in suburb. (4) Interestingly, the elderly in core area tend to utilize cars to seek for healthcare when they live with their offspring, while those in suburb tend to use cars and taxis when they have serious illness and require companion. Background: Maternal mortality resulting from pregnancy and delivery complications is a sensitive indicator of women's status in the society, access to care services, and sufficiency and quality of healthcare and is the major indicator of a country's developmental status. The present study aimed at determination of educational needs regarding safe motherhood from suburban women's perspective., Method: This qualitative study with conventional content analysis approach was conducted in suburban healthcare centers of Alborz University of medical sciences from 23 October to 22 December 2019. The participants included 15 eligible Iranian suburban women who were selected through purposive sampling. The data were collected via in-depth semi-structured interviews and focus groups. Data were analyzes with MAXQDA10 software., Results: Three main themes emerged from the analysis of the data (barriers against safe pregnancy, accountability multidimensional training, and threats and opportunities of distance learning), six categories, 11 subcategories and 547 codes., Discussion: The results indicated that suburban women were less probable to be present in healthcare centers and receive the required information compared to their peers due to their conditions; provision of accessible training services appropriated to their conditions can greatly contribute to elimination of these problems., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest., (© 2021 Published by Elsevier Ltd.)

Urban sprawl is, among all, also the result of voluntary or induced resettlement of population from the inner city to urban periphery, or by in-migration to peripheral parts of cities where the origin of migrants is in other settlements. The focus of this paper is on the influence that residential preferences have on suburbanization, with the emphasis on analysis of the residential choice and certain population groups' tendencies to prioritise living in suburbs or the inner-city living. Theoretical considerations which are set in this paper initiate with residential preference components and the hypothesis of change in dominant motives for residential choice throughout family and individual's lifecycle. Then, the demographic data have been analysed according to the latest Census results in the two pilot-areas of urban and suburban type in Belgrade. Additional research on residential preferences are founded on preparation of specific questionnaire which would enable application of more powerful statistical techniques, especially a wider use of measuring scales for the variables deriving from the questionnaire, and formulation of a model for prediction of different population groups' residential preferences in urban and suburban settings.

Cet article propose une analyse de trois films (La Squale, La Journée de la jupe, Sheitan), où apparaît la figure des « tournantes », terme apparu au début des années 2000 et désignant des viols collectifs commis en banlieue. Il examine l’intrication d’un discours de sexualité et d’un discours racial dans la constitution des « tournantes » comme problème. Il identifie trois axes de problématisation : documentaire, morale et politique, oppositionnelle. Il en ressort que les « tournantes », objets d’une conflictualité politique, problématisent le racial par le sexuel. Cette problématisation suppose altérisation et stigmatisation raciales, mais aussi une production de la blanchité. Ces représentations adoptent en particulier des rapports concurrents à la « vérité » du sexe et de la race, suggérant que la racialisation peut être appréhendée comme lutte de véridiction. This paper intends to analyze three movies (La Squale, La Journée de la jupe, Sheitan), which deal mainly with, or simply mention, “tournantes”. The French term “tournantes” surfaced in the early 2000s, and refers to group rapes committed in suburbian areas. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the dovetailing of sexuality and race discourses in the constitution of “tournantes” as a problem. We identify three axes of problematization: a documentary one, a moral and political one, and an oppositional one. “Tournantes”, which generate political conflictuality, problematize race through sex without resorting only to othering and stigmatizing: they also appear to be the place of whiteness production. In particular, these representations take competing stances towards the “truth” of sex and race, suggesting that racialization can be understood as a struggle for verediction.

International audience; This study examines the socio-spatial transformations in the city of Abidjan. The area concerned by the study is Adjahui-coube, a peninsula situated in the municipality of Port-Bouet between the airport Felix Houphouet-Boigny and the town of Kumasi. The study is based on the changes made to a site in full socio-spatial mutation. The objective set for this study is the analysis of socio-spatial transformations of this site houses a small village Ébrié become a dormitory town for many city dwellers. The methodology of the study was based on a satellite image processing, direct observation, interviews with community leaders and the administration of a questionnaire to a sample of 200 households residing on the site. The constitution of the sample of 200 households was made by a process purposive. The information collected by the questionnaire administration focuson the demographic and economic characteristics of residents of the site. Also, processing of satellite images taken from Google Earth has allowed the acquisition of information on the spatial parameters of the site. The study reveals a site rapid expansion which reduces more and more the space occupied by agricultural activities and natural wasteland. It should be noted that 84.50% of heads of households interviewed were of Ivorian nationality and 32% of heads of households are women. 74.50% of households work outside the municipality of Port-Bouet with the modern sector (39.50%), informal (37%) and liberal activities (20.50%). They certainly have incomes respecting the minimum wage (60 000 F CFA), but they mainly live in precarious housing type (houses built with recycled materials). However, these units have sanitary facilities (98% of households use latrines generally shared in the courtyard).; Cette étude s’intéresse aux transformations socio-spatiales dans la ville d’Abidjan. L’espace concerné par l’étude est Adjahui-Coubé, une presqu’île de la commune de Port-Bouët située entre l’aéroport Félix Houphouët-Boigny et la commune de Koumassi. L’étude se fonde sur les changements opérés sur un site en pleine mutation socio-spatiale. L’objectif assigné à cette étude est l’analyse des transformations socio-spatiales de ce site abritant un petit village Ebrié devenu une cité dortoir de nombreux citadins. La démarche méthodologique de l’étude s’est appuyée sur un traitement d’images satellites, une observation directe, des entretiens avec des chefs de communautés et l’administration d’un questionnaire à un échantillon de 200 ménages résidant sur le site. La constitution de l’échantillon des 200 ménages a été faite par une démarche par choix raisonné. Les informations recueillies par l’administration du questionnaire portent sur les caractéristiques démographiques et économiques des résidents du site. Aussi, le traitement d’images satellites prises sur google earth a permis l’acquisition d’informations sur les paramètres spatiaux du site. L’étude est révélatrice d’un site en rapide extension qui réduit de plus en plus l’espace occupé par les activités agricoles et les friches naturelles. Il est à noter que 84,50% des chefs de ménage interrogés sont de nationalité ivoirienne et 32% des chefs de ménage sont des femmes. 74,50% des ménages travaillent hors de la commune de Port-Bouët avec des emplois du secteur moderne (39,50%), informel (37%) et des activités libérales (20,50%). Ils ont certes des revenus respectant le SMIG (60 000 F CFA), mais ils vivent en majorité dans des habitations de type précaire (maisons construites avec des matériaux de récupération). Toutefois, ces logements disposent de commodités hygiéniques (98% de ménages utilisent des latrines généralement partagées dans la cour).

Las excavaciones de la Hospedaria Beira Rio y del Teatro Marques Duque de Mértola descubrieron restos del arrabal ribereño, un barrio bien organizado del siglo XII. Las casas no difieren de otras del mismo período, pero los vestigios y objetos encontrados en ellas permiten interpretar este espacio en un contexto portuario. Las cerámicas encontradas incluyen novedades en relación al repertorio de época de omeya (ollas con escotadura, cazuelas carenadas y con “costillas” incipientes, botellas y jarritas de pasta blanca) y un nutrido conjunto de cerámicas de importación (cuerda seca total parcial, y esgrafiado), The excavations at the Beira Rio Guest House and the Marques Duque Theatre have brought remains of Mertola`s Riverside settlement to light, a well organized 12th century neighborhood. The houses do not differ from others in Mertola coming from the same period, but the remains and objets found within them allow this área to be inserted within the Riverside context. The ceramics found include new ítems, different to the repertoire of the Umayyad era (saucepans and casseroles with a marked body, casseroles with rudimentary "ribs" and bottles and small vases made from White clay) and a set of imported ceramics ("cuerda seca" and Sgraffiato)

450. Expansion of functions of urban areas to rural areas: the case of Kalwaria Zebrzydowska

The town of Kalwaria Zebrzydowska, located ca. 40 km from Cracow is a constantly developing center of the furniture industry established in the 19th century. It is a formal capital of the Kalwaria Zebrzydowska municipality, whose administrative borders include 11 villages. However, practically speaking, the area along the main east-west road (national route no. 52), from the access road in Brody, may be considered as one big urban area. It is an example of an area in which borders between towns and adjacent villages are indicated only by name plaques, often indistinguishable from advertising boards. Buildings typical for, and originating from, urban areas, expand beyond the town’s borders in a free and uncontrolled manner. The town grows chaotically, its structure changes, i.a. through creation of new functional areas, also expanding beyond formal borders, decreasing the significance of the town center and introducing changes to the communication structure. Moreover, urbanized rural areas change as well, becoming a suburb, or, as in the case of this town of 4.5 thousand inhabitants, a quasi-suburban area. The process seems inevitable, if not natural. How does Kalwaria Zebrzydowska function today? Where are the borders of its constantly changing structure? What will be the fate of such "expanding” towns?
