Purpose : This study aimed to investigate the dual-task effect on conventional center of pressure (CoP) outcomes, CoP oscillations, and prefrontal cortex (PFC) activation between young and older adults. Methods : Fourteen healthy older adults (age: 66.25 ± 3.43 years) and another fourteen gender-matched young adults (age: 19.80 ± 0.75 years) participated in this study. Participants completed single-task and dual-task standing trials in a fixed order. The displacement of CoP and PFC activation were recorded using a Force plate and a functional near-infrared spectroscopy system, respectively. Two-way MANOVAs were used to examine the group and task effects. Additionally, the Pearson correlation analyses were used to investigate the relationship between CoP oscillations and PFC activation. Results : Our results showed a worse balance performance, greater CoP oscillations of 0-0.1 (11.03 ± 8.24 vs. 23.20 ± 12.54 cm 2 ) and 0.1-0.5 (13.62 ± 9.30 vs. 30.00 ± 23.12 cm 2 ) Hz in the medial-lateral direction and higher right (dorsomedial: -0.0003 ± 0.021 vs. 0.021 ± 0.021 & ventrolateral: 0.0087 ± 0.047 vs. 0.025 ± 0.045 mol/ml) and left (dorsomedial: 0.0033 ± 0.024 vs. 0.020 ± 0.025 & ventrolateral: 0.0060 ± 0.037 vs. 0.034 ± 0.037 mol/ml) PFC activation in response to a secondary cognitive task in older adults ( p  < .05). Older adults also showed significant positive correlations between CoP oscillations in the anterior-posterior direction and PFC activation under the single-task standing. Conclusion : These results suggest that older adults presented a loss of postural automaticity contributing to cognitive dysfunction. Moreover, heightened CoP oscillations at 0-0.5 Hz in response to a secondary cognitive task could provide evidence of a loss of automaticity, which might be associated with a greater reliance on the sensory inputs.

Background: To summarize the experiences on the mastoscopic subcutaneous mastectomy for gynecomastia by "nine-step method" based on the "5S" goal and standardize this operation., Patients and Methods: Between January 1, 2002, and October 31, 2021, a total of 2035 breasts of 1082 male patients with gynecomastia, of which 129 patients with one side, were underwent mastoscopic subcutaneous mastectomy. The follow-up endpoint was 3 months after surgery., Results: All patients were successfully completed the operation, and none of them was transferred to open operation. The operation time for unilateral breast was 12-28 min, and the average time was 17.7 ± 6.2 min. The amount of bleeding during unilateral operation was very small, about 5-10 ml. The total drainage volume was 5-50 ml after the operation, and the drainage tube was removed in 3-5 days. The epidermal necrosis occurred in 0.3% nipple. 0.2% chest wall had a little ecchymosis in the supero-medial region of the breast. All patients had the normal feeling of nipples and areola, the smoothing and symmetrical chest wall, and the natural contour. There was no recurrence during the follow-up period., Conclusions: The mastoscopic subcutaneous mastectomy for gynecomastia by "nine-step method" based on the "5S" goal has a short operation time, few surgical complications and good esthetics. Rivers play a significant role in the global nitrous oxide (N 2 O) budget. However, the microbial sources and sinks of N 2 O in river systems are not well understood or quantified, resulting in the prolonged neglect of nitrification. This study investigated the isotopic signatures of N 2 O, thereby quantifying the microbial source of N 2 O production and the degree of N 2 O reduction in the Yellow River. Although denitrification has long been considered to be the dominant pathway of N 2 O production in rivers, our findings indicated that denitrification only accounted for 18.3% (8.2%-43.0%) of the total contribution to N 2 O production in the Yellow River, with 50.2%-80.2% being concurrently reduced. The denitrification contribution to N 2 O production (R 2  = 0.44, p < 0.01) and N 2 O reduction degree (R 2  = 0.70, p < 0.01) were positively related to the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) content. Similar to urban rivers and eutrophic lakes, denitrification was the primary process responsible for N 2 O production (43.0%) in certain reaches with high organic content (DOC = 5.29 mg/L). Nevertheless, the denitrification activity was generally constrained by the availability of electron donors (average DOC = 2.51 mg/L) throughout the Yellow River basin. Consequently, nitrification emerged as the primary contributor in the well-oxygenated Yellow River. Additionally, our findings further distinguished the respective contribution of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and archaea (AOA) to N 2 O emissions. Although AOB dominated the N 2 O production in the Yellow River, the AOA specie abundance (AOA/(AOA + AOB)) contributed up to 32.6%, which resulted in 25.6% of the total nitrifier-produced N 2 O, suggesting a significant occurrence of AOA in the oligotrophic Yellow River. Introduction: Touch by neighboring plants is a common but overlooked environmental variable for plants, especially in dense vegetation. In addition, shade is inevitable for understory plants. The growth performance of clonal plant to the interaction between thigmomorphogenesis and shade response, and their impact on light adaptability is still unknown., Methods: At the present study, parental ramets of Glechoma longituba were exposed to two conditions (neighboring touch and shade), and their offspring ramets were in ambient or shaded environment. The phenotype and growth of parental and offspring ramets were analyzed., Results: The results showed that neighboring touch of parental ramets regulated the performance of offspring ramets, while the effect depended on the light environment. The parental neighboring touch occurring in ambient environment suppressed the expansion of leaf organ, showed as a shorter petiole and smaller leaf area. Moreover, G. longituba exhibited both shade avoidance and shade tolerance characters to shaded environment, such as increased leaf area ratio and leaf mass ratio, longer specific petiole length and specific stolon length. It was notable that these characters of shade response could be promoted by parental neighboring touch to some extent. Additionally, parental light environment plays an important role in offspring growth, parent with ambient light always had well-grown offspring whatever the light condition of offspring, but the growth of offspring whose parent in shaded environment was inhibited. Finally, for the offspring with shaded environment, the touch between parental ramets in shade environment showed a disadvantage on their growth, but the influence of the touch between parental ramets in ambient environment was slight., Discussion: Overall, the interaction of parental neighboring touch and shade environment complicate the growth of understory plants, the performance of plants is the integrated effect of both. Background: Meniere's disease (MD) is characterized by idiopathic endolymphatic hydrops (ELH). Frequent vertigo attacks is the most disabling symptom of MD., Objective: This study evaluated the efficacy of triple semicircular canal occlusion combined with endolymphatic sac decompression in the treatment of frequent vertigo in patients with MD., Methods: Eleven patients with complete medical records were included in this study conducted from May 2021 to April 2022. All patients were enrolled to undergo triple semicircular canal occlusion (TSCO) with endolymphatic sac decompression (ESD). Various tests including pure tone audiometry (PTA), vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs), the video head impulse test (v-HIT), caloric test data, the Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI), the Berg Balance Scale (BBS), and the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) were performed both before and after the surgery., Results: The successful control rate of vertigo was 100% (9/9) in the average 23-month postoperative follow-up period, with complete control rate of 88.89% (8/9) and substantial control rate of 11.11% (1/9)., Conclusion: Triple semicircular canal occlusion combined with ESD may be an effective treatment option for managing frequent vertigo attacks in patients with MD. We examined couples' dyadic trust profiles over the transition to parenthood and their associations with couples' attachment representations, perceptions of partner's caregiving, and parenting quality. We followed 125 couples from pregnancy to 24 months postpartum and applied the latent profile analysis (LPA) to examine whether distinct dyadic patterns of trust would emerge among couples. We then examined couples' attachment representations and perceptions of partner's caregiving as factors that might explain their trust profiles. Finally, we examined how couples' trust profiles would be related to their parenting quality 24 months postpartum. The dyadic LPA yielded three trust profiles: a both high profile ( N = 64), a mother high, father moderate profile ( N = 42), and a mother moderate to low, father moderate profile ( N = 19). Mothers with dismissing attachment were able to hold high-stable trust when their partner also held high trust toward them, whereas mothers with preoccupied attachment, in general, were likely to have low and declining trust over time. Mothers' more positive perceptions of their husband's caregiving quality were also related to their high-stable trust over time. Mothers' high trust, in turn, was associated with their less emotionally disengaged and less role-reversed parenting. The findings highlight mothers' important role in couples' dyadic trust over the transition to parenthood. Implications of study findings are discussed. Transition metal carbides modified by Au nanoparticles (Au/Ti 3 C 2 ) were synthesized and developed as a colorimetric sensor for the determination of H 2 O 2 and ampicillin. The surface electrical properties of Ti 3 C 2 were changed, and Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) and gold growth solution were synthesized simultaneously. Au/Ti 3 C 2 was obtained by seed growth method with AuNPs modified on the surface of transition metal carbides, nitrides or carbon-nitrides (Ti 3 C 2 MXenes). The synthesized AuNPs and Ti 3 C 2 had no peroxidase-like activity, but Au/Ti 3 C 2 had. The peroxidase catalytic mechanism was due to electron transfer. The peroxidase activity of Au/Ti 3 C 2 can be utilized for the determination of H 2 O 2 . The linear range of Au/Ti 3 C 2 for H 2 O 2 was 1-60 µM, and the detection limit was 0.12 µM (S/N = 3). A colometric sensor for ampicillin detection based on Au/Ti 3 C 2 was further constructed since S in ampicillin formed an Au-S bond with Au/Ti 3 C 2 , leading to the weakening of its peroxidase-like property. The change of peroxidase-like property attenuated oxidation of TMB, and the ampicillin content was inversely proportional to the concentration of oxidized TMB, and the blue color of solution faded, which enabled the determination of ampicillin. The linear range for ampicillin was 0.005-0.5 µg mL - 1 , and the detection limit was 1.1 ng mL - 1 (S/N = 3). The sensor was applied to the detection of ampicillin in milk and human serum., (© 2024. Multimode fiber (MMF) which supports parallel transmission of spatially distributed information is a promising platform for remote imaging and capacity-enhanced optical communication. However, the variability of the scattering MMF channel poses a challenge for achieving long-term accurate transmission over long distances, of which static optical propagation modeling with calibrated transmission matrix or data-driven learning will inevitably degenerate. In this paper, we present a self-supervised dynamic learning approach that achieves long-term, high-fidelity transmission of arbitrary optical fields through unstabilized MMFs. Multiple networks carrying both long- and short-term memory of the propagation model variations are adaptively updated and ensembled to achieve robust image recovery. We demonstrate >99.9% accuracy in the transmission of 1024 spatial degree-of-freedom over 1 km length MMFs lasting over 1000 seconds. The long-term high-fidelity capability enables compressive encoded transfer of high-resolution video with orders of throughput enhancement, offering insights for artificial intelligence promoted diffusive spatial transmission in practical applications., (© 2024. High concentrations of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) are key characteristics of inflammatory sites. Scavenging RONS at the site of inflammation is an effective therapeutic strategy. This study introduces ultrasmall Cu 2 O@His nanoparticles with RONS-scavenging ability for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in mice. The strong coordination between the nitrogen atom in histidine (His) and copper enhances the dispersion and stability of Cu 2 O@His. Due to their small size and large surface area, Cu 2 O@His exhibits outstanding RONS-clearing ability. Importantly, Cu 2 O@His can target mitochondrial sites and repair damaged mitochondria. With excellent dispersion and scavenging RONS ability, Cu 2 O@His demonstrates good efficacy in treating mouse IBD. This work provides a new paradigm for developing nanozymes with an ultrasmall size and multiple scavenging RONS abilities.

Background: The aim of this study was to explore the impact of sleep quality on cognitive function in patients with chronic subjective tinnitus., Methods: The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the Montreal Cognitive Assessment Scale (MoCA) were used to assess sleep quality and cognitive function in patients with chronic subjective tinnitus, sleep disorder patients (SD), and normal controls (NC). The tinnitus evaluation questionnaire (TEQ) and tinnitus loudness were used to assess the severity in patients with chronic subjective tinnitus. Tinnitus patients were divided into two groups based on PSQI results: "tinnitus with sleep disorder (TwSD)" and "tinnitus without sleep disorder (TnSD)." The MoCA scores in TwSD and TnSD groups were compared with those in SD and NC groups, and the correlation between PSQI, TEQ, tinnitus loudness, and MoCA scores in subjective tinnitus patients were analyzed., Results: Whether TwSD group or TnSD group, the MoCA score was significantly lower than those in the NC group and SD group. Meanwhile, there was no significant difference between TwSD and TnSD groups in MoCA score, and PSQI, TEQ, and tinnitus loudness were not significantly correlated with MoCA., Conclusion: Subjective tinnitus may be an independent risk factor for cognitive impairment. The underlying neural mechanisms between subjective tinnitus, sleep disorders, and cognitive impairment need to be further explored and clarified.

Background: Few studies on care transitions following acute stroke have evaluated whether referral to community-based rehabilitation occurred as part of discharge planning. Our objectives were to describe the extent to which patients discharged home were referred to community-based rehabilitation and identify the patient, hospital, and community-level predictors of referral., Methods: We examined data from 40 North Carolina hospitals that participated in the COMPASS (Comprehensive Post-Acute Stroke Services) cluster-randomized trial. Participants included adults discharged home following stroke or transient ischemic attack (N=10  702). In this observational analysis, COMPASS data were supplemented with hospital-level and county-level data from various sources. The primary outcome was referral to community-based rehabilitation (physical, occupational, or speech therapy) at discharge. Predictor variables included patient (demographic, stroke-related, medical history), hospital (structure, process), and community (therapist supply) measures. We used generalized linear mixed models with a hospital random effect and hierarchical backward model selection procedures to identify predictors of therapy referral., Results: Approximately, one-third (36%) of stroke survivors (mean age, 66.8 [SD, 14.0] years; 49% female, 72% White race) were referred to community-based rehabilitation. Rates of referral to physical, occupational, and speech therapists were 31%, 18%, and 10%, respectively. Referral rates by hospital ranged from 3% to 78% with a median of 35%. Patient-level predictors included higher stroke severity, presence of medical comorbidities, and older age. Female sex (odds ratio, 1.24 [95% CI, 1.12-1.38]), non-White race (2.20 [2.01-2.44]), and having Medicare insurance (1.12 [1.02-1.23]) were also predictors of referral. Referral was higher for patients living in counties with greater physical therapist supply. Much of the variation in referral across hospitals remained unexplained., Conclusions: One-third of stroke survivors were referred to community-based rehabilitation. Introduction: Multiple sclerosis (MS) can lead to numerous deficits in body functions, including balance and mobility impairment. This study examined the effect of lower back and lower extremity kinesiology tape (KT) application on static balance and physical functioning performance in people with MS (pwMS) and compared that to a non-elastic tape., Methods: This pilot randomized study recruited and enrolled 10 participants with MS that were allocated into two groups: kinesio (n = 6) and non-elastic (n = 4) tape. Participants were assessed with and without the respective tape on static balance with eyes open and closed and various physical function tests., Results: Effect sizes for the Kinesio tape intervention were found to be small, while effect sizes for the sham tape/place condition varied from small to high. For both groups, the tendency was to reduce or maintain performance on the tests comparing tape and no tape. Background: Salivary gland carcinoma (SGC) patients with distant metastasis (DM) are rare, and understanding this disease is insufficient. Nomograms can predict the prognostic probability of patients, while few studies have examined diagnostic and prognostic factors in SGC patients with DM. The purpose of this study was to establish and validate the risk and prognostic nomograms of SGC patients with DM. Methods: Based on the SEER database, we analyzed the data of SGC patients between 2004 and 2015. Logistic regression analyses and Cox proportional hazards regression analyses were used to identify risk and prognostic factors for DM in SGC patients. Based on the Akaike information criterion (AIC) value and likelihood ratio test, the best-fitting model was selected to build risk and prognostic nomograms, and the results were evaluated by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, calibration curves, decision curve analysis (DCA), and Kaplan-Meier (K-M) survival curves. ROC curves were also used to compare the nomograms with the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) staging system. Results: 7418 SGC patients were included in the study, and 307 (4.14%) of them were diagnosed with DM. This study identified that there are variables (age ≥ 80, no-parotid gland primary site, histologic type of mucoepidermoid carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, T stage ≥ T2, N staged ≥ N1, histologic grade ≥ III, and tumor size ≥ 41 mm) associated with the occurrence of DM in SGC patients. Therefore, we constructed diagnostic and prognostic nomograms after incorporating these variables. ROC curves illustrated the better predictive efficacy of 2 nomograms over the AJCC staging system. DCA curves, calibration curves, and K-M survival curves showed that 2 nomograms can accurately predict the occurrence and prognosis of DM among SGC patients in training and validation sets. Multi-mode fiber (MMF) has emerged as a promising platform for spatial information transmission attributed to its high capacity. However, the scattering characteristic and time-varying nature of MMF pose challenges for long-term stable transmission. In this study, we propose a spatial pilot-aided learning framework for MMF image transmission, which effectively addresses these challenges and maintains accurate performance in practical applications. By inserting a few reference image frames into the transmitting image sequence and leveraging a fast-adapt network training scheme, our framework adaptively accommodates to the physical channel variations and enables online model update for continuous transmission. Experimented on 100 m length unstable MMFs, we demonstrate transmission accuracy exceeding 92% over hours, with pilot frame overhead around 2%. Our fast-adapt learning scheme requires training of less than 2% of network parameters and reduces the computation time by 70% compared to conventional tuning approaches. Additionally, we propose two pilot-insertion strategies and elaborately compare their applicability to a wide range of scenarios including continuous transmission, burst transmission and transmission after fiber re-plugging. The proposed spatial pilot-aided fast-adapt framework opens up the possibility for MMF spatial transmission in practical complicated applications.

In this study, a highly promising bacterium was isolated from sandstone oil in the Ordos Basin, named strain NS-6 which exhibited exceptional urease production ability and demonstrated superior efficiency in inducing the deposition of calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ). Through morphological and physiochemical characteristics analysis, as well as 16S rRNA sequencing, strain NS-6 was identified as Neobacillus mesonae . The activity of urease and the formation of CaCO 3 increased over time, reaching a maximum of 7.9 mmol/L/min and 184 mg (4.60 mg/mL) respectively at 32 h of incubation. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) revealed CaCO 3 crystals ranging in size from 5 to 6 μm, and Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis verified the presence of calcium, carbon, and oxygen within the crystals. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis further confirmed the composition of these CaCO 3 crystals as calcite and vaterite. Furthermore, the maximum deposition of CaCO 3 by strain NS-6 was achieved using response surface methodology (RSM), amounting to 193.8 mg (4.845 mg/mL) when the concentration of calcium ions was 0.5 mmol/L supplemented with 0.9 mmol/L of urea at pH 8.0. Genome-wide analysis revealed that strain NS-6 possesses a chromosome of 5,736,360 base pairs, containing 5,442 predicted genes, including 3,966 predicted functional genes and 1,476 functionally unknown genes. Glucobiose is a range of disaccharides consisting of two glucose molecules, generally including trehalose, kojibiose, sophorose, nigerose, laminaribiose, maltose, cellobiose, isomaltose, and gentiobiose. The difference glycosidic bonds of two glucose molecules result in the diverse molecular structures, physiochemical properties and physiological functions of these glucobioses. Some glucobioses are abundant in nature but have unconspicuous roles on health like maltose, whereas some rare glucobioses display remarkable biological effects. It is unpractical process to extract these rare glucobioses from natural resources, while biological synthesis is a feasible approach. Recently, the production and application of glucobiose have attracted considerable attention. This review provides a comprehensive overview of glucobioses, including their natural sources and physicochemical properties like structure, sweetness, digestive performance, toxicology, and cariogenicity. Specific enzymes used for the production of various glucobioses and fermentation production processes are summarized. Additionally, their versatile functions and broad applications are also introduced.

Microwave-assisted enzymatic extraction (MAEE) was used for the separation of polysaccharides from micro- Chlorella . The extraction condition of MAEE was optimized by Box-Behnken design and response surface methodology. Results showed that the optimal condition for the extraction of Chlorella sp. crude polysaccharides (CSCP) was at 50°C for 2.3 h with 380 W of microwave power and 0.31% of enzyme dosage. Under the optimal extraction condition, the extraction yield of CSCP reached 0.72%. Similarly, the α-amylase modification conditions of the CSCP were also optimized, in which the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging rate was used as the response value. The scavenging rate of DPPH free radicals was 17.58% when enzyme dosage was 271 U/g at 51°C for 14 min. Moreover, the enzyme-modified CSCP presented a typical heteropolysaccharide mainly including glucose (48.84%), ribose (13.57%) and mannose (11.30%). Stress related to the COVID-19 pandemic may pose acute threats to caregivers' capacity to cope and result in problematic parenting. However, studies have suggested that some caregivers were able to maintain high resilience when facing hardship. The goal of the present study was to examine how COVID-19-related stress affects resilience and parenting of mothers with young children and whether mothers' individual differences in emotion regulation skills lead to different resilience and parenting outcomes. We followed a sample of 298 mothers in the United States with children between 0 and 3 years old over 9 months beginning in April 2020 when most states were on lockdown. Results indicated that both COVID-19-related stress in April 2020 and greater increases/smaller decreases of COVID-19-related stress across 9 months were associated with mothers' lower resilience in January 2021. Low resilience, in turn, was associated with mothers' higher parenting stress, perceptions of parenting incompetence, and risk for child abuse. Furthermore, for mothers with low and moderate levels of cognitive reappraisal, a greater increase/smaller decrease in COVID-19-related stress was associated with their lower resilience after 9 months. In contrast, for mothers with high cognitive reappraisal, the change in COVID-19-related stress was not related to their resilience. This study demonstrates the importance of cognitive reappraisal for mothers of young children to resist and thrive against chronic and uncontrollable external stressors, which are crucial to preventing mothers' child abuse potential and maintaining positive parenting. Increasing evidence indicates that long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) play crucial roles in the resistance to endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress in many cancers. However, ER stress-regulated lncRNAs are still unknown in glioma. In the present study, we investigated the altered lncRNAs upon ER stress in glioma and found that small nucleolar RNA host gene 1 (SNHG1) was markedly increased in response to ER stress. Increased SNHG1 suppressed ER stress-induced apoptosis and promoted tumorigenesis in vitro and in vivo. Further mechanistic studies indicated that SNHG1 elevated BIRC3 mRNA stability and enhanced BIRC3 expression. We also found that KLF4 transcriptionally upregulated SNHG1 expression and contributed to the ER stress-induced SNHG1 increase. Collectively, the present findings indicated that SNHG1 is a KLF4-regulated lncRNA that suppresses ER stress-induced apoptosis and facilitates gliomagenesis by elevating BIRC3 expression., (© 2023 The Authors. Background: Despite the increasing incidence in colorectal cancer (CRC) among the young population, the involvement of modifiable early-life exposures is understudied., Methods: We prospectively investigated the association of lifestyle score, which measures adherence to the 2018 World Cancer Research Fund/American Institute for Cancer Research (WCRF/AICR) cancer prevention recommendations, in adolescence and adulthood with risk of CRC precursors in 34,509 women enrolled in the Nurses' Health Study II. Participants reported adolescent diet in 1998 and subsequently underwent at least one lower gastrointestinal endoscopy between 1999 and 2015. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using multivariable logistic regression for clustered data., Results: During follow-up (1998-2015), 3036 women had at least one adenoma, and 2660 had at least one serrated lesion. In multivariable analysis, per unit increase in adolescent WCRF/AICR lifestyle score was not associated with risk of total adenoma or serrated lesions, in contrast to adult WCRF/AICR lifestyle score (OR = 0.92, 95% CI: 0.87-0.97, P trend  = 0.002 for total adenoma; and OR = 0.86, 95% CI: 0.81-0.92, P trend  < 0.001 for total serrated lesions)., Conclusion: Adherence to the 2018 WCRF/AICR recommendations during adulthood but not during adolescence was associated with a lower risk of CRC precursors., (© 2023. Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is a species with immensely broad phenotypic and genotypic diversity that could widely distribute in natural and clinical environments. However, little attention has been paid to reveal their genome plasticity to diverse environments. In the present study, a comparative genomic analysis of S. maltophilia isolated from clinical and natural sources was systematically explored its genetic diversity of 42 sequenced genomes. The results showed that S. maltophilia owned an open pan-genome and had strong adaptability to different environments. A total of 1612 core genes were existed with an average of 39.43% of each genome, and the shared core genes might be necessary to maintain the basic characteristics of those S. maltophilia strains. Based on the results of the phylogenetic tree, the ANI value, and the distribution of accessory genes, genes associated with the fundamental process of those strains from the same habitat were found to be mostly conserved in evolution. Isolates from the same habitat had a high degree of similarity in COG category, and the most significant KEGG pathways were mainly involved in carbohydrate and amino acid metabolism, indicating that genes related to essential processes were mostly conserved in evolution for the clinical and environmental settings. Meanwhile, the number of resistance and efflux pump gene was significantly higher in the clinical setting than that of in the environmental setting. Collectively, this study highlights the evolutionary relationships of S. maltophilia isolated from clinical and environmental sources, shedding new light on its genomic diversity., (© 2023. BACKGROUND Fast-track surgery (FTS), also known as enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS), includes a coordinated perioperative approach to patient care that aims to facilitate postoperative recovery. The role of nursing care is central to the concept of FTS. This retrospective study aimed to evaluate the effects of nursing care using an FTS approach in 49 patients with early-stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) undergoing first-line treatment with radiofrequency ablation (RFA). MATERIAL AND METHODS A retrospective analysis was made of 49 patients with early-stage hepatocellular carcinoma who underwent first-line treatment with radiofrequency ablation in the Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery in our hospital from January 2020 to December 2021. The nurses have been nursing the patients in accordance with the requirements of FTS from 2021. Compared with the data of patients receiving traditional nursing, the detailed differences in postoperative recovery, pain score, complication rate, liver and kidney function, and nursing satisfaction were analyzed. RESULTS After applying the FTS nursing model, the patients had significantly shorter time to first flatus, infusion, postoperative hospital stay, and lower total hospitalization expenses (P<0.05). Moreover, the Numerical Pain Rating Scale score was lower than that in the control group, the postoperative complications in the 2021 group were lower than those in the 2020 group, and the nursing satisfaction was also better than that of the 2020 group (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS Nursing care using a fast-track surgery approach with early-stage hepatocellular carcinoma patients undergoing first-line treatment with radiofrequency ablation is better than conventional nursing, and improves recovery of patients.

Objectives: Our objective was to study the efficacy and safety of intratymapanic dexamethasone (ITD) for treating in Méniere's disease in southern China., Methods: A total of 124 patients with Méniere's disease were randomly divided into 2 groups: ITD group (n = 62) and intratympanic lidocaine (ITL) group (n = 62). The ITD group was further randomly divided into 2 groups based on dexamethasone dosage: ITD1 (2 mg/ml) (n = 31) and ITD2 (5 mg/ml) group (n = 31). Symptom alleviation and complications were recorded after every treatment., Results: Vertigo was improved in 65% of patients who received ITD compared with 55% of patients who received ITL patients ( P < .05). Objective: To explore the value of adding 1 kHz cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential（cVEMP） and ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potential（oVEMP） in the auxiliary diagnosis of unilateral vestibular hypofunction. Methods: A retrospective analysis of 84 patients with unilateral vestibular hypofunction receiving two or more vestibular function tests was conducted,29 cases of unilateral Ménière's disease, 27 cases of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo （BPPV）, 8 cases of idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss （ISSHL） with vertigo, and 20 cases of ISSHL without vertigo were included. SPSS 25.0 software was used for statistical analysis to observe the difference of frequency amplitude ratio （FAR） at 500 Hz/1 kHz of cVEMP and oVEMP between the experimental and control groups. Results: ①The cVEMP elicitation rates were 95.24% （80/84） and 98.81% （83/84） for 500 Hz and 1 kHz, respectively; and the oVEMP elicitation rates were 78.57% （66/84） and 91.67% （77/84） for 500 Hz and 1 kHz, respectively. ②Except for the lateral difference of FAR in oVEMP of the posterior semicircular canal BPPV group and cVEMP of the horizontal semicircular canal BPPV group （ P <0.05）, no significant lateral difference was observed in the other disease groups （ P >0.05）. Conclusion: In patients with unilateral vestibular hypofunction, cVEMP and oVEMP showed different frequency tuning changes in different semicircular canal BPPV groups. The ergogenic effects of caffeine supplementation on repeated-sprint ability (RSA) have produced equivocal results. This study aimed to examine the effects of 200 mg of caffeine during repeated-sprint running on heart rate (HR), rating of perceived exertion (RPE), blood lactate (BLa) concentration, and sprint time (ST). Thirty-two individuals (males: n = 17, females: n = 15; age: 22 ± 1 years) participated in the study. The study followed a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, crossover design, in which each participant ingested 200 mg of caffeine or placebo on separate visits 60 minutes prior to repeated-sprinting exercise. The repeated-sprint protocol consisted of three sets of six maximal-effort 30-meter sprints with 20 seconds and 5 minutes of active recovery in between sprints and sets, respectively. During each set, HR, RPE, BLa, and ST were recorded. Caffeine supplementation did not significantly (set 1: p = 0.535; set 2: p = 0.602; set 3: p = 0.189) impact HR during exercise. Similarly, RPE was not statistically ( p = 0.052) altered between conditions during any of the sprint sets. The caffeine trials elicited greater BLa values after all three sets compared to the placebo trials ( p < 0.001). Moreover, the caffeine trials demonstrated significantly reduced total STs during all sets compared to the placebo trials ( p < 0.001). Thus, our findings suggested that 200 mg of caffeine supplementation elicited an increase in RSA in young, healthy non-athletes. These findings are accompanied by a blunted perceived exertion relative to an increase in exercise intensity during repeated-sprint exercise.

Background: The prevalence and burden of coronary heart disease (CHD) has increased substantially in India, accompanied with increasing need for percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI). Although a large government-funded insurance scheme in Maharashtra, India covered the cost of PCI for low-income patients, the high cost of post-PCI treatment, especially Dual Antiplatelet Therapy (DAPT), still caused many patients to prematurely discontinue the secondary prevention. Our study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of DAPT adherence on all-cause mortality among post-PCI patients and explore the potential determinants of DAPT adherence in India., Method: We collected clinical data of 4,595 patients undergoing PCI in 110 participating medical centers in Maharashtra, India from 2012 to 2015 by electronic medical records. We surveyed 2527 adult patients who were under the insurance scheme by telephone interview, usually between 6 to 12 months after their revascularization. Patients reporting DAPT continuation in the telephone survey were categorized as DAPT adherence. The outcome of the interest was all-cause mortality within 1 year after the index procedure. Multivariate Cox proportional hazard (PH) model with adjustment of potential confounders and standardization were used to explore the effects of DAPT adherence on all-cause mortality. We further used a multivariate logistic model to investigate the potential determinants of DAPT adherence., Results: Out of the 2527 patients interviewed, 2064 patients were included in the analysis, of whom 470 (22.8%) discontinued DAPT prematurely within a year. After adjustment for baseline confounders, DAPT adherence was associated with lower one-year all-cause mortality compared to premature discontinuation (less than 6-month), with an adjusted hazard ratio (HR) of 0.52 (95% Confidence Interval (CI) = (0.36, 0.67)). We also found younger patients (OR per year was 0.99 (0.97, 1.00)) and male (vs. female, OR of 1.30 (0.99, 1.70)) had higher adherence to DAPT at one year as did patients taking antihypertensive medications (vs. non medication, OR of 1.57 (1.25, 1.95))., Conclusion: These findings suggest the protective effects of DAPT adherence on 1-year mortality among post-PCI patients in a low-income setting and indicate younger age, male sex and use of other preventive treatments were predictors of higher DAPT adherence., (© 2022. As for hybrid supercapacitors, it is important to enhance the long cycling performance and high specific capacitance. In this paper, cobalt vanadate (Co 2 V 2 O 7 ) hexagonal nanosheets on nickel foam are manufactured by a facile hydrothermal method and then transformed into numerous smaller size interconnected hierarchical nanosheets without any shape change via electrochemical reconstruction. Benefiting from the favorable architecture of hierarchical nanosheets via electrochemical reconstruction, the Co 2 V 2 O 7 hexagonal nanosheet electrode exhibits a remarkable long cycling performance with 272% specific capacitance retention after 100,000 cycles at a current density of 5 A g -1 and then displays an increasing specific capacitance of 1834 F g -1 (tested at 1 A g -1 ). Furthermore, an aqueous hybrid supercapacitor device based on the Co 2 V 2 O 7 hexagonal nanosheet electrode exhibits a high energy density of 35.2 Wh kg -1 at a power density of 1.01 kW kg -1 and an excellent cyclic stability with 71.4% capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles at 5 A g -1 . These results offer a practicable pathway for enhancing the electrochemical properties of other metal oxides through electrochemical reconstruction.

Introduction: The role of social support in the relief of tinnitus distress and related mechanisms remains unclear. This study aimed to confirm a hypothesis that the influence of social support on tinnitus distress is mediated by resilience and self-esteem., Methods: The Social Support Rating Scale, Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, Positive Version of Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and Tinnitus Handicap Inventory were used to assess 296 patients who experience chronic subjective tinnitus. The collected data were subjected to correlational analysis, mediating effect testing, and structural equation model analysis using R 3.3.1 with the mediate and lavaan packages., Results: The result showed that social support had significant positive correlations with resilience and self-esteem, while resilience and self-esteem had significant negative correlations with tinnitus distress. Furthermore, social support indirectly affected tinnitus distress through the full mediating effects of resilience and self-esteem and could indirectly affect resilience through the partial mediating effects of self-esteem., Conclusion: These results suggested that the key to social support for alleviating tinnitus distress lies in the development of patients' resilience and self-esteem. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the validity of whole body percent fat (%BF) and segmental fat-free mass (FFM) using multi-frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis (MF-BIA) and dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) in college-aged adults. Sixty-two participants male ( n = 32) and female ( n = 30) completed MF-BIA and DEXA measurements following established pre-test guidelines. %BF and segmental FFM (right arm, left arm, trunk, right leg, and left leg) were collected and analyzed. The MF-BIA significantly ( p < 0.05) underestimated %BF for all participants, females, and males compared to DEXA. In addition, MF-BIA significantly ( p < 0.05) underestimated FFM in the arms and legs in all participants and males with the exception of the left arm in all subjects while significantly overestimating FFM in the trunk. In females, the MF-BIA overestimated FFM in the arms and trunk while significantly ( p < 0.05) underestimating FFM in the legs. Difference plots also indicated that the underestimation of FFM from MF-BIA in the arms and legs increased as the amount of FFM increased. Thus, our findings suggested that the MF-BIA may not be accurate for measuring whole %BF and segmental FFM in the college-aged population.

Soil amendments have been proposed for immobilizing metallic contaminants, thus reducing their uptake by plants. For the safe production of crops in contaminated soil, there is a need to select suitable amendments that can mitigate heavy metal uptake and enhance crop yield. The present experiment compared the effects of three amendments, hydroxyapatite (HAP), organic manure (OM), and biochar (BC), on plant growth and heavy metal accumulation by maize in an acidic soil contaminated with Cd, Pb, and Zn, and their potential for safe crop production. Toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) tests, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis were used to evaluate the effectiveness and mechanisms of heavy metal immobilization by the amendments. The results showed that shoot and root biomass was significantly increased by HAP and 1% OM, with an order of 1% HAP > 0.1% HAP > 1% OM, but not changed by 0.1% OM and BC (0.1% and 1%). HAP significantly decreased Cd, Pb, and Zn concentrations in both shoots and roots, and the effects were more pronounced at the higher doses. OM decreased the shoot Cd and Pb concentrations and root Zn concentrations, but only 1% OM decreased the shoot Zn and root Pb concentrations. BC decreased the shoot Cd and Pb concentrations, but decreased the shoot Zn and root Pb concentrations only at 1%. HAP decreased the translocation factors (TFs) of Cd, Pb, and Zn (except at the 0.1% dose). OM and BC decreased the TFs of Cd and Zn, respectively, at the 1% dose but showed no significant effects in other cases. Overall, plant P, K, Fe, and Cu nutrition was improved by HAP and 1% OM, but not by 0.1 OM and BC. Soil pH was significantly increased by HAP, 1% OM, and 1% BC, following an order of 1% HAP > 1% OM > 0.1% HAP > 1% BC. The TCLP levels for Cd, Pb, and Zn were significantly reduced by HAP, which can be partly attributed to its liming effects and the formation of sparingly soluble Cd-, Pb-, and Zn-P-containing minerals in the HAP-amended soils. To some extent, all the amendments positively influenced plant and soil traits, but HAP was the optimal one for stabilizing heavy metals, reducing heavy metal uptake, and promoting plant growth in the contaminated soil, suggesting its potential for safe crop production.

China is experiencing rapid urbanization and industrialization with correspondingly high levels of air pollution. Although the harm of PM 2.5 has been long reported, it is only quite recently that there is increasing concern in China for its possible adverse health effects on cardiovascular disease. We reviewed the epidemiologic evidence of potential health effects of PM 2.5 on cardiovascular disease reported from recent studies in China (2013 onwards). There is clear evidence for the contribution of PM 2.5 to cardiovascular outcomes, including mortality, ischemic heart disease, and stroke from studies based in various regions in China. This evidence adds to the global evidence that PM 2.5 contributes to adverse cardiovascular health risk and highlights the need for improved air quality in China.

Background: A fall would impact elderly population's quality of life, which associate with diminished physical and psychological function, and can even be life-threatening. Tai Chi has been used to improve age-related postural instability in locomotion. However, it does not fully explain the mechanism of a lower risk of falling among the Tai Chi population compared to other healthy older adults., Research Question: The maintenance of postural stability is more complicated than minimizing postural movements. Postural time to contact is an important temporal measure of postural stability under fitting tasks, which might further clarify the benefits of long term Tai Chi exercise., Methods: Participants were required to fit a block (90 × 90 mm) through two different openings (130 × 130 mm and 100 × 100 mm) at two different distances (arm's length or 130 % of arm's length). Kistler forceplate and Vicon system were used to collect center of pressure and kinematic data, respectively. Postural time to contact was used to assess instantaneous perturbation for postural system., Results: Tai Chi group exhibited significant longer postural time to contact in quiet standing and shorter postural time to contact in fitting tasks, expecting for close-small condition, compared to the brisk walking and sedentary groups (p < .05). In addition, both large and small opening condition, Tai Chi group showed a shorter postural time to contact than brisk walking and sedentary groups (p < .0001)., Significance: Long term Tai Chi exercise would promote the regulation of posture and decrease the postural constrain to increase the overall stability when performing fitting tasks. Microplastics (MPs) as emerging contaminants have attracted attention worldwide, but little is known on their interactions with metallic contaminants in soil-plant systems. Here, we investigated the interactions between MPs, i.e., polyethylene (PE) and polylactic acid (PLA), and cadmium (Cd) on plant performance and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal community in an agricultural soil. PE showed no noticeable phytotoxicity, while 10% PLA decreased maize biomass and chlorophyll content in leaves. A significant interaction on root biomass occurred between PE and Cd, but not between PLA and Cd. Both PE and PLA caused increase in soil pH and DTPA-extractable Cd concentrations, but no alterations in Cd accumulation in plant tissues. Different numbers of endemic and total OTUs were observed in various treatments. The relative abundance of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) genera highly varied with MPs and Cd. MPs altered AMF community structure and diversity, depending on their type and dose. Coexisting Cd produced slight but significant interactions with MPs on the dominant AMF genera. Overall, plant growth and AMF community varied with MPs type and dose, Cd, and their interactions, and the high dose of PLA produced stronger phytotoxicity. The purposes of the study were (1) to compare postural sway between participants with Parkinson's disease (PD) and healthy controls and (2) to develop and validate an automated classification of PD postural control patterns using a machine learning approach. A total of 9 participants in the early stage of PD and 12 healthy controls were recruited. Participants were instructed to stand on a force plate and maintain stillness for 2 minutes with eyes open and eyes closed. The center of pressure data were collected at 50 Hz. Linear displacements, standard deviations, total distances, sway areas, and multiscale entropy of center of pressure were calculated and compared using mixed-model analysis of variance. Five supervised machine learning algorithms (ie, logistic regression, K-nearest neighbors, Naïve Bayes, decision trees, and random forest) were used to classify PD postural control patterns. Participants with PD exhibited greater center of pressure sway and variability compared with controls. The K-nearest neighbor method exhibited the best prediction performance with an accuracy rate of up to 0.86. In conclusion, participants with PD exhibited impaired postural stability and their postural sway features could be identified by machine learning algorithms.

Microplastics (MPs) occur widely in terrestrial ecosystems. However, information on the interaction of MPs with metals in terrestrial ecosystems is lacking in the literature. The present study investigated the effects of two types of MPs (high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polystyrene (PS)) with different dosages (i.e., 0, 0.1%, 1%, and 10%) on the uptake and effects of Cd in maize plants grown in an agricultural soil. Results showed that addition of Cd at a 5 mg/kg caused inhibited plant growth and resulted in high Cd accumulation in plant tissues. Polyethylene alone showed no significant phytotoxic effects, but a high-dose of HDPE (10%) amplified Cd phytotoxicity. Polystyrene negatively affected maize growth and phytoxicity further increased in the presence of Cd. Both HDPE and PS caused soil diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA)-extractable Cd concentrations to increase but did not significantly affect Cd uptake into plant tissues. In the soil without Cd addition, HDPE decreased soil pH, while PS did not significantly alter soil pH. However, in the soil spiked with Cd, both HDPE and PS increased pH. Overall, impacts on plant growth and Cd accumulation varied with MP type and dose, and PS induced substantial phytotoxicity. In conclusion, co-occurring MPs can change Cd bioavailability, plant performance, and soil traits. Our findings highlight the ecological impacts that could occur from the release of MPs into soil.

The hydraulic conductivity of the vitreous humor has been measured for the bovine eye. The experiment was carried out by placing it within upright cylindrical chamber, open at both ends, and letting its liquid content drain out of the bottom opening by gravity, through a 20 μ m nylon mesh filter. Additional negative pressure was provided at the exit by a hanging drainage tube. The diminishing vitreous volume was measured in terms of the height in the chamber and recorded as a function of time. The reduction in the vitreous liquid content also caused the hydraulic conductivity to reduce and this parameter was quantified on the basis of previously-developed theories of fibrous porous media that have been very well established. A theoretical model with a fully analytical expression for the vitreous volume undergoing drainage was developed and used as a least-squares best fit to deliver the initial hydraulic conductivity value of K 0 / μ =(7.8 ± 3.1) × 10 -12 m 2 (Pa-s). The measurements were made with the hyaloid membrane intact and therefore represents an effective conductivity for the entire system, including possible variations within the vitreous.

Cardiac fibrosis is a common feature of various cardiovascular diseases. Previous studies showed that acetaldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) deficiency exacerbated pressure overload-induced heart failure. However, the role and mechanisms of cardiac fibrosis in this process remain largely unknown. This study aimed to investigate the effect of ALDH2 deficiency on cardiac fibrosis in transverse aortic constriction (TAC) induced pressure overload model in mice. Echocardiography and histological analysis revealed cardiac dysfunction and enhanced cardiac fibrosis in TAC-operated animals; ALDH2 deficiency further aggravated these changes. ALDH2 chimeric mice were generated by bone marrow (BM) transplantation of WT mice into the lethally irradiated ALDH2KO mice. The proportion of circulating fibroblast progenitor cells (FPCs) and ROS level in BM after TAC were significantly higher in ALDH2KO mice than in ALDH2 chimeric mice. Furthermore, FPCs were isolated and cultured for in vitro mechanistic studies. The results showed that the stem cell-derived factor 1 (SDF-1)/C-X-C chemokine receptor 4 (CXCR4) axis played a major role in the recruitment of FPCs. In conclusion, our research reveals that increased bone marrow FPCs mobilization and myocardial homing contribute to the enhanced cardiac fibrosis and dysfunction induced by TAC in ALDH2 KO mice via exacerbating accumulation of ROS in BM and myocardial SDF-1 expression., (Copyright © 2019 The Authors. As one of emerging contaminants, microplastics (MPs) can enter the environment and adsorb toxic metals such as cadmium (Cd), thereby causing potential environmental risks. However, adsorption characteristics of MPs are poorly understood. Herein, batch experiments were performed to investigate the adsorption characteristics of Cd onto high-density polyethylene (HDPE) MPs with different particle sizes, that is, 1-2 mm, 0.6-1 mm, and 100-154 μm. The adsorption of Cd was quite rapid initially, and the equilibrium time was approximately 90 min. An increase in the pH of the Cd solution led to an increase in Cd adsorption. MPs with particle size of 100-154 μm had the highest adsorption capacity. Addition of 1, 10, and 100 mg/L NaCl all significantly decreased Cd adsorption. Adsorption kinetics fitted the pseudo-second-order model. Adsorption isotherm followed the Langmuir model and, to a lesser extent, the Freundlich model, with estimated maximum adsorption capacity of 30.5 μg/g. The adsorbed Cd easily desorbed from the MPs. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis confirmed Cd adsorption to and desorption from MPs. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy analysis showed no new functional groups formed during the adsorption and desorption processes, suggesting physical interaction may dominate the Cd adsorption onto MPs. The present study findings provide evidence that MPs can accumulate Cd, and the adsorbed Cd may be highly available, thus posing risks to the organisms exposed to these MPs., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Background: The Identification of Functional Ankle Instability (IdFAI) is a valid and reliable tool to identify chronic ankle instability; however, it was developed in English, thus limiting its usage only to those who can read and write in English. The objectives of our study were to (1) cross-culturally adapt a Chinese (Mandarin) version of the IdFAI and (2) determine the psychometric properties of the Chinese version IdFAI., Methods: The cross-cultural adaptation procedures used by the investigators and translators followed previously published guidelines and included 6 stages: (1) initial translation, (2) synthesis of the translations, (3) back translation, (4) developing the pre-final version for field testing, (5) testing the pre-final version, and (6) finalizing the Chinese version of IdFAI (IdFAI-C). Five psychometric properties of the IdFAI-C were assessed from results of 2 participant groups: bilingual ( n = 20) and Chinese ( n = 625)., Results: A high degree of agreement was found between the English version of IdFAI and IdFAI-C (intra-class correlation 2,1 = 0.995). An excellent internal consistency (Cronbach's α = 0.89), test-retest reliability (intra-class correlation 2,1 = 0.970), and construct validity ( r (625) = 0.67) was also found for the IdFAI-C. In addition, the results of exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis indicated that ankle instability was the only construct measured from the IdFAI., Conclusion: The IdFAI-C is a highly reliable and valid self-report questionnaire that can be used to assess ankle instability. Metronidazole, a BCS class I drug, could be waived based on the BCS principles, thus enabling in vitro dissolution data as a surrogate of BE study. However, the impact of dissolution profiles of metronidazole tablets on the in vivo performance has never been studied systematically. So the aim of the present study was to conduct a multipronged approach of in vitro dissolution, in silico simulation, and in vivo study to evaluate the effect of dissolution performance on oral absorption of metronidazole tablets, as well as the accuracy of PBPK model to predict the oral bioavailability for BCS I drug. The results demonstrated that the PBPK models were successfully established for metronidazole immediate-release tablets. Bioequivalence comparison in dogs indicated that the test products were bioequivalent to the Reference (80%-125%, 90% CI), and even their dissolution profiles in vitro were significantly different. And the prediction of oral pharmacokinetics of the three formulations in human was also highly similar. In addition, the behavior of in vitro dissolution profiles and in vivo absorption was elucidated. These findings will contribute to understanding the potential risks during the formulation development and justifying the biowaiver for metronidazole tablets.

At present, the mechanisms underlying changes in visual processing in individuals with tinnitus remain unclear. Therefore, we investigated whether the vision dominance of individuals with tinnitus disappears at the preresponse level through behavioral study. A total of 38 individuals with tinnitus and 31 healthy controls completed a task in which they were asked to attend to either visual or auditory stimuli while ignoring simultaneous stimulus inputs from the other modality. We manipulated three levels of congruency between the simultaneous visual and auditory inputs: congruent (C), incongruent at the preresponse level (PRIC), and incongruent at the response level (RIC). Thus, we differentiated the cross-modal conflict explicitly into the preresponse (PRIC > C) and response (RIC > PRIC) levels. The results revealed no significant difference in the size of the preresponse level conflict between the auditory attention and visual attention conditions in tinnitus group. In brief, the preresponse level of individuals with tinnitus showed a loss in vision dominance. This may be due to the reduced interference of visual information in auditory processing.

Peripheral neuropathy (PN) is a multifarious disorder that is caused by damage to the peripheral nerves. Although the symptoms of PN vary with the etiology, most cases are characterized by impaired tactile and proprioceptive sensation that progresses in a distal to proximal manner. Balance also tends to deteriorate as the disorder becomes more severe, and those afflicted are substantially more likely to fall while walking compared with those who are healthy. Most patients with PN walk more cautiously and with greater stride variability than age-matched controls, but the majority of their falls occur when they must react to a perturbation such as a slippery or uneven surface. The purpose of this study was to first describe the role of somatosensory feedback in the control of posture and then discuss how that relationship is typically affected by the most common types of PN. A comprehensive review of the scientific literature was conducted using MEDLINE, and the relevant information was synthesized. The evidence indicates that the proprioceptive feedback that is conveyed primarily through larger type I afferents is important for postural control. However, the evidence indicates that the tactile feedback communicated through smaller type II afferents is particularly critical to the maintenance of balance. Many forms of PN often lead to chronic tactile desensitization in the soles of the feet and, although the central nervous system seems to adapt to this smaller type II afferent dysfunction by relying on more larger type I afferent reflex loops, the result is still decreased stability. We propose a model that is intended both to help explain the relationship between stability and the smaller type II afferent and the larger type I afferent feedback that may be impaired by PN and to assist in the development of pertinent rehabilitative interventions.

Background Physiological/biomechanical systems display high degrees of complexity in their corresponding physiological and/or biomechanical outputs, indicative of normal healthy physiological functioning, though little attention has been paid to potential mechanisms which may affect complexity. Center of pressure (CoP) dynamics also display high degrees of complexity and may be affected via altered respiratory-motor interactions such as during voluntary control of breathing. Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences in the complexity of CoP dynamics during autonomous vs. voluntary control of breathing and between different voluntarily controlled breathing conditions. Methods Center of pressure recordings were taken from 18 older adults during static standing under three different breathing conditions: 1) neutral breathing, 2) abdominal breathing, and 3) thoracic breathing, the first constituting the autonomous breathing condition and the latter two constituting voluntarily controlled breathing conditions. CoP dynamics were quantified using sample entropy, standard deviation, 95% sway area, and average radial velocity. Repeated measure MANOVAs were used to assess the effect of breathing on CoP dynamics, with top-down application of ANOVAs and pairwise comparison as needed. Results Voluntary control of breathing during both conditions resulted in significantly higher CoP variability and lower sample entropy than during autonomous control of breathing in the mediolateral direction, indicating less complex dynamics and loss of system control. No significant differences between voluntary breathing conditions were observed. Conclusion Voluntary control of breathing significantly affected on CoP dynamics during static standing. The complexity of the postural control system may be affected via alterations in respiratory-motor interactions., (Published by Elsevier B.V.)

A prodrug of tapentadol, namely tapentadol carbamate (WWJ01), was synthesized to improve the bioavailability of tapentadol owing to its extensive first-pass metabolism. In this study, a highly rapid and sensitive UPLC-MS/MS method was developed and validated for the simultaneous determination of tapentadol and WWJ01 in rat plasma with fluconazole as an internal standard. The analytes and internal standard were treated by methanol and then separated on a Phenomenex Kinetex® XB-C 18 (2.1 × 50 mm × 2.6 μm) column at a flow rate of 0.3 mL/min. The mobile phase comprised methanol and water with a gradient elution. The mass transition ion-pairs were m/z 222.2 → 107.0, m/z 293.2 → 71.9 and m/z 307.1 → 220.0 for tapentadol, WWJ01 and IS, respectively. Excellent linearity was observed over the concentration range of 2-1250 ng/mL (r = 0.995) with a lower limit of quantification of 2 ng/mL for both tapentadol and WWJ01. The intra- and inter-day accuracy and precision for all quality control samples were within ±15%. The visual processing capacity of tinnitus patients is worse than normal controls, indicating cross-modal interference. However, the mechanism underlying the tinnitus-modulated visual processing is largely unclear. In order to explore the influence of tinnitus on visual processing, this study used a signal recognition paradigm to observe whether the tinnitus group would display a significantly longer reaction time in processing the letter symbols (Experiment 1) and emotional faces (Experiment 2) than the control group. Signal detection and signal recognition, which reflect the perceptual and conceptual aspects of visual processing respectively, were manipulated individually in different conditions to identify the pattern of the cross-modal interference of tinnitus. The results showed that the tinnitus group required a significantly prolonged reaction time in detecting and recognizing the letter symbols and emotional faces than the control group; meanwhile, no between-group difference was detected in signal encoding. In addition, any gender- and distress-modulated effects of processing were not found, suggesting the universality of the present findings. Finally, follow-up studies would be needed to explore the neural mechanism behind the decline in speed of visual processing. The positive emotional bias in tinnitus patients also needs to be further verified and discussed. Highlights : - The bottom-up visual processing speed is decreased in tinnitus patients. - Tinnitus primarily interferes with the detection of the visual signals in individuals.

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to examine the changes of lower extremity kinetics during walk-to-run (WR) transition and if the changes would follow a non-linear trend within the five strides before WR transition using a constant acceleration protocol., Methods: Fourteen participants performed gait transition on the instrumented treadmill at a constant acceleration. Peak, time to peak, and movement and power of hip, knee and ankle joints were recorded and analyzed in sagittal plane for five strides before gait transition. Three Two-way MANOVA were employed to examine the differences of kinetic measures among the five strides. Univariate analysis and Post-Hoc Tukey's test would be applied if needed. Also, Post hoc polynomial trend analyses were used to examine the trend of the kinetic measures that significantly changed during the five strides., Results: Compared to the first four strides, significant differences were observed for peaks moments, joint powers, and time to peaks in the last stride before running at ankle, knee, and hip joints respectively. In general, the changes of kinetic variables were following a quadratic trend during the five strides before running., Conclusion: Joint kinetic measures actively change in non-linear patterns during the five strides before running to prepare for the gait transition, indicating that the gait transition is an active reorganization rather than a passive reaction., (Published by Elsevier Ltd.)

The underlying mechanisms responsible for the cardioprotective effects of riboflavin remain elusive. Current study tested the hypothesis that riboflavin protects injured myocardium via epigenetic modification of LSD1. Here we showed that myocardial injury was attenuated and cardiac function was improved in riboflavin-treated mice with experimental myocardial infarction (MI), while these protective effects of riboflavin could be partly blocked by cotreatment with LSD1 inhibitor. Riboflavin also reduced apoptosis in hypoxic (1% oxygen) H9C2 cell lines. Results of ChIP-seq for H9C2 cells showed that riboflavin activated LSD1, as verified by decreased H3K4me2 levels of target genes. Subsequent LEGO bioinformatics analysis indicated that phospholipid metabolism genes Lpcat2 and Pld1 served as the potential target genes responsible for the LSD1 mediated protective effects. Overexpressions of Lpcat2 and Pld1 aggravated hypoxic injury in H9C2 cells, while these detrimental effects could be attenuated by overexpression of LSD1. We thus propose that riboflavin alleviates myocardial hypoxic/ischemic injury by activating LSD1 cellular activity and modulating the expression of phospholipid metabolism genes. LSD1-mediated crosstalk between phospholipid metabolism and histone methylation might thus be an important mechanism for the cardioprotective effects of riboflavin., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Background: Adaptive servoventilation (ASV) is a new therapeutic modality to treat sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) especially for central sleep apnoea associated with Cheyne-Stokes respiration, whereas the role of ASV in SDB patients with heart failure (HF) is controversial. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of ASV on these patients through a meta-analysis of published data., Methods: A comprehensive literature search was performed to identify studies focused on ASV through databases, including PubMed, Medline, Embase, Cochrane Library and Web of science from 1950 to 2014. Parallel randomised controlled trials which compared ASV to other controls in HF and SDB patients with extractable data were meet our inclusion criteria. Random effects meta-analysis models were applied using RevMan 5.2., Results: Seven studies involving 301 patients were recruited in the meta-analysis. The weighted mean difference in apnoea hyponea index (-17.73 events/h, 95% CI, -21.85 to -2.94) and left ventricular ejection fraction (MD: 4.68, 95% CI, 2.74-6.63) both favored ASV compared to control conditions. The urinary noradrenaline level (MD: -32.18, 95%CI: -44.07 to -20.09) was decreased, while the exercise capacity measured by 6-min walk distance (MD: 41.26, 95% CI, 17.06-65.45) was improved after ASV treatment. Whereas neither left ventricular end-diastolic diameter (LVEDD) nor Epworth sleepiness-scale score (ESS) significantly changed after ASV therapy., Conclusions: ASV is superior to other therapy, as it can result in good consequences for patients with SDB and improve their prognosis in cardiac function. The disruption of signal transducer and activator of transcription 4 (STAT4) signal can inhibit the inflammation and protect organs from injury during severe bacterial infection. However, the mechanism of STAT4 signal in lung injury remains poor understood. Here we report that STAT4 deficiency decreased the lethality and protein leakage in STAT4(-/-) mice and protected lipopolysaccharid (LPS)-induced lung injury with ameliorated edema, inflammatory infiltration and hemorrhage. The expression of CD11b(+)Gr-1(+) myeloid derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) markedly increased in the circulation of STAT4(-/-) mice after LPS stimuli, accompanying with increased macrophages infiltration in inflamed lung tissue. In addition, the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines including tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-1β and IL-6 decreased while anti-inflammatory cytokine (IL-10) increased in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid of STAT4(-/-) mice. Thus, these results indicate that the accumulation of MDSCs and macrophages play a critical role in LPS-induced lung injury. Targeting MDSCs and macrophages polarization through a STAT4 dependent signaling pathway might help to reduce the inflammation and damage of lung tissue., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier B.V.
